Over the past two decades, extensive research has been conducted to explore alternative supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in order to address the environmental concerns associated with the cement industry. Bricks, which are frequently preferred in the construction sector, generate a lot of waste during the production and demolition of existing buildings, requiring environmentally sustainable recycling practices. Therefore, many studies have been carried out in recent years on the use of brick waste as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in cement mortar and concrete production. This critical review evaluates the impact of waste brick powder (WBP) on the mechanical and durability properties of mortar and concrete when used as a partial replacement for cement. It was observed that the properties of WBP-blended cement mortar or concrete depend on several factors, including WBP particle size, replacement ratio, pozzolanic activity, and mineralogical structure. The findings indicate that WBP with a particle size range of 100 µm to 25 µm, with a maximum cement replacement level of 10-20%, exhibits a positive impact on the compressive strength of both mortars and concretes. However, it is crucial to emphasize that a minimum curing duration of 28 days is imperative to facilitate the development of a pozzolanic reaction. This temporal requirement plays a vital role in realizing the optimal benefits of utilizing waste brick powder as a supplementary cementitious material in mortars and concretes.

This study investigated the individual and combined effects of l-arginine, l-lysine, and NaCl on the ultrastructure of porcine myofibrils to uncover the mechanism underlying meat tenderization. Arg or Lys alone shortened A-bands and damaged M-lines, while NaCl alone destroyed M- and Z-lines. Overall, Arg and Lys cooperated with NaCl to destroy the myofibrillar ultrastructure. Moreover, these two amino acids conjoined with NaCl to increase myosin solubility, actin band intensity, and the protein concentration of the actomyosin supernatant. However, they decreased the turbidity and particle size of both myosin and actomyosin solutions, and the remaining activities of Ca2+- and Mg2+-ATPase. The current results revealed that Arg/Lys combined with NaCl to extract myosin and dissociate actomyosin, thereby aggravating the destruction of the myofibrillar ultrastructure. The present results provide a good explanation for the previous phenomenon that Arg and Lys cooperated with NaCl to improve meat tenderness.

1. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of soyhulls with different particle sizes on the growth performance, blood indices and gut microbiota of yellow feather broilers.2. Total of 240 healthy, one-day-old, yellow feather broilers were randomly divided into four groups, with six pen replicates within each group and ten birds per pen. The control group birds were fed the basal diet (Control). For the treatment groups, 5% soyhulls with different particle sizes were included in the basal diet. The particle size geometric mean diameters (dgw) of the soyhulls in the three treatment groups were 299.69 µm (LowPS), 489.85 µm (MediumPS) and 734.83 µm (HighPS) with geometric standard deviation (Sgw) 1.75 µm, 1.62 µm and 1.67 µm, respectively.3. Results showed that the growth performance variables and organ indices were not different among the four groups. The MediumPS group had increased TG, T-CHO, ALT, HDL-C, and GSH-PX levels and decreased T-AOC levels, whereas LowPS and HighPS groups had increased HDL-C and GSH-PX levels (p < 0.05). Microbial diversity analysis showed that the intestinal microbiota of yellow feather broilers mainly included Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. Inclusion of 5% soyhulls with different particle size had no effect on alpha diversity indices of caecal microbiota. The HighPS group had significantly higher relative abundance of Firmicutes spp. and lower Bacteroidetes spp. compared with the LowPS and MediumPS group but this was not different from the Control group. The relative abundance of Cyanobacteria spp. was significantly higher in the HighPS group than the other three groups. LEfSe analysis showed that there were more enriched biomarker taxa in the groups with soyhulls than the control group.4. Overall, the inclusion of soyhulls with different particle sizes had limited effects on growth performance, blood indices and caecal microbiota composition of yellow feather broilers.

This paper aimed to study the interactive effects of the addition of soluble arabinoxylans (AX) and the particle size (PS) of soybean hulls (SBH) on digesta mean retention time (MRT) and nutrient digestibility in broiler chickens. A total of 288 one-day old Ross 308 female chicks were assigned to 32 pens (9 birds/pen) and fed a commercial starter diet for 10 d. At 10 d of age, pens were assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments (8 pens/diet) containing 120 g/Kg coarse or fine SBH, with or without addition of 50 g/Kg of soluble wheat AX, substituting maize starch. Titanium dioxide (4 g/Kg) and cobalt-EDTA (1 g/Kg) were added as inert markers. Excreta were quantitatively collected from d 22 to 25. Gastrointestinal tract and digesta were collected on d 28, 29, or 30. Arabinoxylans reduced the weight of the gizzard relative to body weight (RW) by 0.07% units (P = 0.005), and increased ceca RW (0.28 vs. 0.34%, P < 0.001) and length (10.45 vs. 11.21 cm/Kg BW, P < 0.001). Arabinoxylans increased digesta MRT in the crop (solids/liquids: +12 min, P < 0.05), small intestine (solids/liquids: +17 min, P < 0.01), and hindgut (liquids: +77.5 min, P < 0.05); and reduced apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and apparent total tract retention (ATTR) of DM (-5.4 and -3.9%, P < 0.001, respectively) and starch (-1.35 and -0.7%, P < 0.001, respectively). Particle size of SBH only affected the ATTR of non-starch polysaccharides, presenting higher retention values with fine SBH (-4.3%-units, P = 0.034). The addition of AX reduced AID of N by 4.3%-units, only in presence of fine SBH (interaction, P < 0.05). In conclusion, arabinoxylans greatly influenced digestion in the chicken GIT, while PS of SBH had marginal effects. Arabinoxylans reduced AID of N only with fine SBH, suggesting coarse SBH counteracted AX effects on N digestion, speculatively by modifying digesta viscosity.

PURPOSE: To investigate the associations of overall diet quality and dietary factors with serum biomarkers for lipid and amino acid metabolism in a general population of children. METHODS: We studied 194 girls and 209 boys aged 6-8 years participating in the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children study. Food consumption was assessed by 4-day food records and diet quality was quantified by the Finnish Children Healthy Eating Index (FCHEI). Fasting serum fatty acids, amino acids, apolipoproteins, as well as lipoprotein particle sizes were analyzed with high-throughput nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Data were analyzed using linear regression adjusted for age, sex, and body fat percentage. RESULTS: FCHEI was directly associated with the ratio of polyunsaturated (PUFA) to saturated fatty acids (SFA) (PUFA/SFA), the ratio of PUFA to monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) (PUFA/MUFA), the ratio of PUFA to total fatty acids (FA) (PUFA%), the ratio of omega-3-fatty acids to total FA (omega-3 FA%), and inversely associated with the ratio of MUFA to total FA (MUFA%), alanine, glycine, histidine and very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL) particle size. Consumption of vegetable oils and vegetable-oil-based margarine (≥ 60% fat) was directly associated with PUFA/SFA, PUFA/MUFA, PUFA%, the ratio of omega-6 FA to total FA (omega-6 FA%), and inversely associated with SFA, MUFA, SFA to total FA (SFA%), MUFA%, alanine and VLDL particle size. Consumption of high-fiber grain products directly associated with PUFA/SFA, PUFA/MUFA, omega-3 FA%, omega-6 FA%, PUFA% and inversely associated with SFA and SFA%. Fish consumption directly related to omega-3 FA and omega-3 FA%. Consumption of sugary products was directly associated with histidine and VLDL particle size. Vegetable, fruit, and berry consumption had direct associations with VLDL particle size and the ratio of apolipoprotein B to apolipoprotein A1. Consumption of low fat (< 1%) milk was directly associated with phenylalanine. A higher consumption of high-fat (≥ 1%) milk was associated with lower serum MUFA/SFA and higher SFA%. Sausage consumption was directly related to SFA% and histidine. Red meat consumption was inversely associated with glycine. CONCLUSIONS: Better diet quality, higher in intake of dietary sources of unsaturated fat and fiber, and lower in sugary product intake were associated with more favorable levels of serum biomarkers for lipid and amino acid metabolism independent of adiposity. PURPOSE: This study is focused on monitoring process parameters and quality attributes of aluminum phosphate (AlPO4) using multiple in-line probes incorporated into an industrial-scale adjuvant suspension manufacturing unit. METHODS: The manufacturing of aluminum adjuvant suspension was monitored at manufacturing scale using conductivity, turbidity, infrared, and particle sizing and count probes to follow the continuous evolution of particle formation and size distribution, and the reaction kinetics during the synthesis of AlPO4. RESULTS: The data showed that AlPO4 forms large particles at the early stages of mixing, followed by a decrease in size and then stabilization towards the later stages of mixing and pH adjustment. The results provided a complementary view of process events and assisted in optimizing several parameters, e.g., flow rate of reactants AlCl3 and Na3PO4 solutions, mixing rate, pH, and conductivity of AlPO4, as well as adjuvant quality attribute such as particle size, thus streamlining and shortening the process development stage. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed the usefulness of the in-line probes to automate continuous assessment of AlPO4 batch-to-batch consistency during in-house adjuvant production at the industrial scale.

Forage-based diets are encouraged in organic dairy cattle production as this can increase the net human food supply, but their voluminous nature can limit dry matter intake (DMI) and performance. This study investigates the effects of a substantial particle size reduction of hay on dairy cows' feed intake, performance, and body characteristics, as well as on apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD). Eighteen lactating Holstein cows were allocated to two balanced feeding groups. The control group received long stem hay with a conventional particle size (CON), the experimental group received chopped hay (RED). Both groups were supplemented with concentrates (3.6 kg/d, DM basis). After 14 adaptation days, data were collected for 20 consecutive days. A covariate period of 21 days preceded the experimental feeding period. Particles retained on the 19-, 8- and 4-mm screens and on the pan of the Penn State Particle Separator accounted for 21%, 20%, 20% and 39% of the RED hay. CON hay consisted of 72% large particles, followed by 8%, 7% and 13% retained on the other screens. Average DMI levels of cows in the CON group reached 20.8 kg/d, with a nonsignificant increase (+1.05 kg/d) in the RED group (p = 0.28). Intakes of both NFC (+0.65 kg/d, p = 0.01) and CP (+0.28 kg/d, p = 0.05) were significantly greater in the RED group, resulting in a slightly increased milk yield (+0.8 kg energy corrected milk/d) (p = 0.45), likely because the ATTD decreased significantly when feeding RED hay. No impact was observed on energy balance (103.7 vs 103.9%, p = 0.95), feed conversion efficiency (kg ECM/kg DMI), or N use efficiency. Overall, the results indicate increases in intake of NFC and CP in the RED group when feeding a hay-based (>83%, DM basis) diet, but also a decrease in nutrient digestibility, likely due to increased passage rate, potentially because of the high fraction of hay particles < 4 mm. In conclusion, hay-based rations with a lower proportion of fine particles should be tested to exploit the potential of particle size reduction in terms of improving hay use efficiency.

As they continuously evolve, plants will remain a renewable source for antimicrobial compounds. Omani frankincense is produced by B. sacra trees and is graded into Hojari, Nejdi, Shazri or Sha'bi. Air can be a source for pathogenic or food spoilage microbes; thus, inactivating airborne microbes is necessary in environments such as food and animal production areas. This study investigated the antimicrobial activity and the chemistry of steam-distilled oils of Hojari and Sha'bi grades. It also analyzed the antimicrobial activity of frankincense smoke and the size of its solid particles. Chemical analysis was performed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antimicrobial activity of the oils against Staphylococcus aureus (NCTC 6571), Bacillus spp., Escherichia coli (NCTC 10418), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (NCTC 10662), Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus ochraceus, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium citrinum, Alternaria alternata and Fusarium solani was determined using well diffusion and micro-well dilution methods. A microscopic technique was used to determine the size of frankincense smoke solid particles. Microbes were exposed to frankincense smoke to test their susceptibility to the smoke. Hojari and Sha'bi oils were similar in composition and contained monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. The Hojari and the Sha'bi oils possessed broad spectrum antimicrobial activity. The largest growth inhibition zones were obtained with S. cerevisiae and F. solani. An MIC of 1.56% (v/v) was found with E. coli, S. cerevisiae and F. solani. Frankincense smoke contained fine irregular solid particles with a diameter range of 0.8-2287.4 µm, and thus may pose a health risk to susceptible individuals. The smoke had potent antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, and airborne bacteria, yeast and mold, with a maximum inhibition of 100%. It was concluded that Hojari and Sha'bi frankincense oils and smoke had significant antimicrobial activity that can be exploited in controlling human, animal and plant pathogenic microbes.

Dietary fibres with increased particle size may develop foregut more efficiently in meat poultry fed diets moderately low in crude protein. The study investigated the performance of broilers fed low-density crude protein diets with the inclusion of oat hulls increasing in particle size. Ross 308 male broiler chicks (n = 336) were divided into 48 pens, 12 pens per treatment (7 chicks per pen). Pens were allocated to 4 dietary treatments in mash form; positive control (PC), a standard crude protein diet, negative control (NC), around 5% lower in protein with 5% celite as an inert material, OH400: 5% lower protein diet with 5% oat hulls of geometric mean diameter (GMD) 400 µm, OH850: 5% lower protein diet with 5% oat hulls of GMD 850µm. Birds were fed ad libitum from d 1 to 35 in 3 phases; starter: d 0 to 10, grower: d 10 to 24 and finisher: d 24 to 35. Growth performance was calculated at the end of the trial. Two birds per pen were sampled on d 24 and 35 to collect data on proventriculus and gizzard weights and pooled ileal digesta. Apparent ileal digestibility of amino acids on d 24, and metabolizable energy on d 24 and 35 were recorded for each pen. Litter was sampled from each pen on d 34 to analyze litter N and moisture content. Footpad dermatitis scores of all birds per pen were recorded on d 35. Overall, no difference (P > 0.05) in body weight gain and feed intake was found between the treatments. However, NC and OH400 showed poorer FCR than PC, whereas FCR on PC and OH850 was similar (P > 0.05). Gizzard absolute weight and relative to body weight, and gizzard to proventriculus ratio were higher (P < 0.05) on OH850 compared to PC and NC on d 24 and 35. Gizzard digesta particle size was reduced (P < 0.05) on OH850 compared to all other diets on d 24 and 35. Amino acids digestibility coefficients for aspartic acid and valine increased (P < 0.05) in birds fed OH850 compared to PC, whereas coefficients for several other amino acids were improved compared to NC and OH400. The apparent ileal digestibility of metabolizable energy was similar (P > 0.05) between PC and OH850. Litter moisture and nitrogen, and footpad dermatitis scores were reduced (P < 0.05) on OH850 compared to PC. In conclusion, the inclusion of coarse oat hulls of GMD 850 µm in low-density crude protein diets can be beneficial for the broilers in developing the foregut, utilizing the nutrients efficiently and reducing litter nitrogen and moisture, and footpad scores.

The low reactivity and volume expansion issue of steel slag limits its application as alternative to cement. Studies demonstrated that aqueous carbonation (AC) can enhance the cementitious properties of finely sized steel slag as a cementitious supplementary material (SCM). However, the impact of particle size on the CO2 uptake capacity and its association of performance of carbonated steel slag remains unexplored. This study aims to optimize the grinding levels by examining the fineness of the steel slag used as SCM to reduce the high-energy consumption while maintaining the CO2 sequestration and properties of SCM. The results show that reducing the size of steel slag is favorable for CO2 sequestration (particle size 22.4-112.6 µm corresponds to sequestration of ∼88.5-37.9 kg CO2/t steel slag) and improve the leaching of Mg ions for mineralization. The life cycle assessment shows that the global warming potential of AC of steel slag is ∼96.2-24.9 kg CO2-eq/t steel slag, which can offset the carbon emissions due to further grinding. The 28-day compressive strength of the cement pastes blended with finer carbonated steel slag was also relatively higher due to the formation of mono-carboaluminates and stabilization of ettringite in facilitating the bond strength between the carbonated steel slag particle and the cement paste matrix. According to 3E (engineering, environmental and economic) triangle model, 22.4 µm steel slag powder showed the best comprehensive performance, including an increased revenue of 40.8 CNY/ton steel slag.

Increasing loading of phosphorus (P) into freshwater systems is deemed as one of the key drivers triggering harmful algal blooms (HABs). However, conventional water quality monitoring of P normally uses the operational cutoff (e.g., 450-nm filter membrane) to separate particulate and dissolved phases (entities passing through the 450-nm membrane are regarded as dissolved phase), which completely neglects the roles of small colloids (450-100 nm) and nanoparticles (100-1 nm). Herein, a new particle size separation approach was used to separate water samples collected from catfish aquaculture ponds in west Alabama into six size fractions: large particles (>1000 nm), large colloids (1000-450 nm), small colloids (450-100 nm), large nanoparticles (100-50 nm), small nanoparticles (50-1 nm), and the truly dissolved phase (<1 nm). The speciation and concentration of P in these six size fractions were then investigated using Hedley's sequential extraction method. The new particle size separation results showed that particle loading (mass) followed the order: >1000 nm, 450-100 nm, 1000-450 nm, 100-50 nm, and 50-1 nm. This is mainly due to the abundance of large-sized (>1000 nm) zooplankton and phytoplankton such as algae and cyanobacteria in the catfish aquaculture ponds. Importantly, the small colloid (450-100 nm) and nanoparticle (100-1 nm) size fractions, which were previously regarded as the dissolved phase using the 450-nm membrane filtration operation, accounted for ∼41.8% of the total particle mass. The Hedley's sequential extraction results showed that sodium hydroxide (NaOH)-extracted P represented the largest P pool, followed by water (H2O)- and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3)-extracted P pools. Smaller particles exhibited a higher loading of P due to their large surface areas. These new findings suggest that the new particle size separation approach needs to be adopted for future water quality monitoring and mitigation of HABs in freshwater ecosystems.

Despite significant research progress in substantiating the therapeutic merits of nanomedicines and the emergence of sophisticated nanotechnologies, the translation of this knowledge into new therapeutic modalities has been sluggish, indicating the need for a more comprehensive understanding of how the unique physicochemical properties of nanoparticles affect their clinical applications. Particle size is a critical quality attribute that impacts the bio-fate of nanoparticles, yet precise knowledge of its effect remains elusive with discrepancies among literature reports. This review aims to address this scientific knowledge gap from a drug development perspective by highlighting potential inadequacies during the evaluation of particle size effects. We begin with a discussion on the major issues in particle size characterization along with the corresponding remedies. The influence of confounding factors on biological effects of particle size, including colloidal stability, polydispersity, and in vitro drug release, are addressed for establishing stronger in vitro-in vivo correlation. Particle size design and tailoring approaches for successful nanoparticulate drug delivery beyond parenteral administration are also illustrated. We believe a holistic understanding of the effect of particle size on bio-fate, combined with consistent nanoparticle manufacturing platforms and tailored characterization techniques, would expedite the translation of nanomedicines into clinical practice.

Biochar is widely used in agricultural production practices as a soil conditioner that can be used both alone and jointly with chemical fertilizer. However, there are few studies on the effects of the combined application of biochar and phosphate fertilizer with different particle sizes on soil and plants. In this experiment, pot experiments were used to study the effects of biochar with different particle sizes on soil nutrients, enzyme activity, and Alfalfa nutrient absorption under two phosphorus levels (according to diameter, the biochar was divided into C1:>1 mm and C2:<0.01 mm). This study showed that the combined application of biochar and phosphorus significantly improved soil nutrients, enzyme activity, and Alfalfa nutrient absorption. Among them, the C2 treatment significantly increased the soil available phosphorus content and phosphatase activity (P<0.05), whereas the C1 treatment had a significant effect on ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, urease, and catalase activities (P<0.05). Moreover, the differences in nutrients and enzymes among biochar treatments with different particle sizes were affected by soil phosphorus levels. At the P0 level, there was no significant difference in ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen contents between the C1 and C2 treatments. At the P1 level, the contents of NH4+-N and NO3--N in the C1 treatment were 24.19% and 18.68% higher than those in the C2 treatment (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the C1 and C2 treatments. Phosphorus addition significantly increased the N and P contents of Alfalfa above ground and in the ground (P<0.05), but there was no significant effect on the nutrient content of Alfalfa between different particle sizes of biochar. In conclusion, biochar and phosphate fertilizer can be used as an effective means of soil improvement. In addition, when using biochar for soil improvement, the impact of particle size on soil nutrients and soil enzymes should be considered.

Aged white tea (WT) has promising medicinal potential, but how to accurately identify aged white tea is still a difficult problem. Inspired by tea cream, the relationship between the characteristics of nanoparticles in tea infusion and aging time was studied. The results showed that with the increase of aging time, the particle size of white tea nanoparticles (WTNs) decreased gradually. Microscopic images showed that the surface structure of WTNs was changed in three aspects: the waxy layer, the cuticle layer and the palisade tissue. Additional in vitro modeling demonstrated a strong correlation between nanoparticle size and protein and tea polyphenol content. The correlation between nanoparticle sizes and aging time was further verified in aged Pu'er raw tea. Starting with the tea infusion's nanoparticles, this study showed that the aging time of WT would impact the nanoparticles' properties, offering a unique way to determine the aging period of WT.

Two types of mayonnaise viz. eggless and egg based were prepared by substituting refined soybean oil by tomato seed oil (TSO) at varying concentrations (0-30%). Aim of the study was to utilise the potential of TSO in replaced of refined oil. With respect to oil particle distribution pattern in both types of mayonnaise, higher specific surface area (Dmean ~ 11.49 µm) and homogenous distribution of oil droplets was noted in egg-based mayonnaise. Rheological behavior depicted shear thinning properties in all types of mayonnaise with low viscosity (1.08 Pa s and 2.29 Pa s) being exhibited by tomato seed oil (TSO) incorporated mayonnaise. Nutritionally, significant increase of 65.5 and 26% in lycopene content while 29 and 34% increase in carotenoid content was noted upon incorporation of TSO in eggless and egg-based mayonnaise. Good storage and oxidative stability were demonstrated by TSO egg-based and eggless mayonnaise in terms of acid value and free fatty acids, also the peroxide value was also found lower than their respective control at the end of storage. Overall, tomato seed oil could be used as a non-conventional source of oil for such food applications owing to its close proximity with other vegetable oils and better nutritional profile like dominance of linoleic fatty acid i.e., 54.23% assayed via gas chromatography. Using the biomimetic process known as microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP), the growth of bio-tiles was investigated as an alternative to conventionally fired ceramic tiles which require operating temperatures above 1000 °C, therefore adding to global carbon emissions. The ureolytic activity of Sporosarcina pasteurii was controlled by centrifuging and dilution with fresh yeast extract media. The bio-tiles were grown using a novel submersion method in which custom moulds were placed in exact positions within the bio-reactor and each was mixed individually from beneath. Five parameters were optimised to achieve bio-tiles (dimensions of 100 × 100 × 10 mm) of breaking strength comparable to conventional tiles of equivalent thickness. By optimising ureolytic activity (4.0 mmol/L·min), the cementation solution concentration (0.3 M), the particle size distribution (D10 = 312 µm; D50 = 469 µm), the volume of cementation solution, as well as the addition of supplemental magnesium (0.3 M), bio-tiles with a breaking strength 637 N ± 60 N and a modulus of rupture of 13.0 N/mm2 ± 2.3 N were produced. These parameters exceed the conventional standards of breaking strength and modulus of rupture of 600 N and 8 N/mm2, respectively, the standards set for tiles with a water absorption above 10 %. This is also the first time that an optimum CaCO3 precipitation rate constant has been identified (0.11-0.18 day-1) for producing bio-tiles that meet the strength properties of conventional extruded ceramic tiles. The tile manufacturing technique described in this study is easy to operate and scale since multiple bio-tiles can be produced in larger cementation tanks. This natural tile making process also benefits the environment by operating at room temperature.

The microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) technique has been used to increase mechanical strength, reduce permeability, and fix radionuclides of soils, etc. To achieve effective soil cementation by MICP, 3 aspects should be considered: MICP efficiency, bacterium retention (in soils after injections), and precipitation uniformity. Here, experiments and statistical analyses were conducted to understand the parameters affecting the 3 aspects. Moreover, the parameters leading to better performance in these aspects were designed and used to conduct MICP soil cementation with varying the number of injections. The results present that temperature and OD600nm of bacterial suspension are the most important parameters affecting MICP efficiency, followed by reaction time, pH, and concentration of cementation solution, and they are all statistically significant. As these parameters increased, MICP efficiency (ratio of CaCO3 formed to Ca2+ added) first increased quickly and then slowly or decreased. The soil particle size distribution and injection rate affected bacterium retention greatly. Smaller particle sizes, wider particle-size-distribution spans, and slower injection rates are beneficial to bacterium retention. However, higher injection rates favour precipitation uniformity. Finally, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the bio-treated soil can be increased further by increasing the number of injections.

Superfine grinding of insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) is a promising method to improve the product quality by regulating the interaction between protein and starch. In this study, the effects of buckwheat-hull IDF powder, at cell-scale (50-10 µm) and tissue-scale (500-100 µm), on the dough rheology and noodle quality were investigated. Results showed that cell-scale IDF with higher exposure of active groups increased the viscoelasticity and deformation resistance of the dough, due to the aggregation of protein-protein and protein-IDF. Compared with the control sample, the addition of tissue-scale or cell-scale IDF significantly increased the starch gelatinization rate (ß, C3-C2) and decreased the starch hot-gel stability. Cell-scale IDF increased the rigid structure (ß-sheet) of protein, thus improving the noodle texture. The decreased cooking quality of cell-scale IDF-fortified noodles was related to the poor stability of rigid gluten matrix and the weakened interaction between water and macromolecules (starch and protein) during cooking.

A new derivative of polyethyleneimine (PEI) with 9% degree of substitution of its primary and secondary amino groups with thiourea moieties (TU9-PEI) has been synthesized and investigated as flocculant in model suspensions of commercial fungicide formulations Dithane M45, Melody Compact 49 WG, Cabrio®Top, and their mixtures. The structure of TU9-PEI, obtained by an aqueous one-pot strategy involving formaldehyde mediated coupling of PEI and TU, was confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy as well as the streaming potential measurements. The settling time, polymer dose, and fungicide type and concentration were the parameters used for assessing the flocculation ability of the new polycation sample. The UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements revealed a good removal efficiency of TU9-PEI for all of the fungicides investigated, between 88 and 94%. Slightly higher removal percent was found for greater fungicide concentrations. The charge neutralization was indicated by zeta potential measurements (values close to zero recorded at the optimum polymer dose) as the main mechanism which contributed to the Dithane and Cabrio®Top particle removal and a combined effect of the TU9-PEI/fungicide particle electrostatic attractions and hydrogen bonds between both the amine and thiourea groups of the polycation chains and the hydroxyl ones on the copper oxychloride particles (negative values) in case of the Melody Compact 49 WG particle separation. Particle size and surface morphology analysis data gave supplementary evidences regarding the TU9-PEI ability to separate the fungicides investigated from simulated wastewater.

The aim of the study was to enhance curcumin skin permeability through the preparation of spanlastics. Spanlastics were prepared using the ethanol injection technique through a central composite design using Span 60 concentration (X1), edge activator type (X2), and its concentration (X3) as the independent variables. The spanlastics were characterized for particle size (PS), encapsulation efficiency (EE), and dissolution efficiency (%DE24h). Formulae with the highest desirability (FN1 and FN2) were prepared and further characterized. They were elastic, spherical, nonirritant, and compatible with the used excipients. They had particle sizes of 147 and 198 nm, encapsulation efficiencies of 84.00% and 89.63%, zeta potential values of -45.50 and -39.10 mV, permeation enhancement ratios of 11.51 and 8.34 folds, and amounts retained of 7.25 and 10.44 µg/cm2 after 24 h, respectively. Formulae FN1 and FN2 showed cytotoxic effects after 48 h on human melanoma A375 with IC50 of 10.9 and 75.6 µg/mL, respectively. They increased the apoptotic effect confirming the success of the spanlastics to be a potential delivery for melanoma treatment.
