RESUMO

The effects of sodium selenite or selenium yeast on the meat quality of broilers were searched in the literature published in the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), PubMed, Web of Science, and Science Direct databases from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2022. Meta-analysis was performed with Stata software (StataCorp. 2011), and the standardized mean difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a random effects model. Twenty of the identified 846 literature sources, which included 791 broilers, were screened. The meat quality indices considered were shear force, drip loss, cooking loss, water holding capacity (WHC), pH, and color. The source of heterogeneity was studied using sensitivity and subgroup analyses, and publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots. The results showed that the supplementation of selenium in the broiler diet significantly reduced the shear force (SMD = -0.67, 95% CI [-1.12, -0.22], P < 0.05) and drip loss (SMD = -0.84, 95% CI [-1.39, -0.30], P < 0.05) and increased the pH (SMD = 0.38, 95% CI [0.01, 0.75], P < 0.05) of broiler breast muscle; however, it had no significant effects on other indices. Funnel plots revealed a slight publication bias in the shear force and pH of breast muscle but none in the drip loss of breast muscle. The sensitivity analysis showed that the results were stable and reliable. In conclusion, selenium supplementation in broiler feed can improve some indices of broiler meat quality, and its inclusion in broiler diets is recommended, in conjunction with other minerals, which is of great significance to improve the quality, preservation time and economic benefits of chicken products.

Background Chronic skin conditions are different from internal illnesses since they are often immediately visible to others. Patients feel self-conscious and often go through depression, anxiety, fear of stigma and a substantial psychological, social and economic impact. It is crucial for healthcare professionals to gather information about various strategies and psychosocial interventions that can be used to manage psychological distress associated with skin conditions and avoid it from being neglected amidst other health conditions. Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) can be used for this. It is a resource-building mindfulness-based self-compassion training programme that uses a combination of personal development training and psychotherapy designed to enhance one's capacity for self-compassion by cultivating spacious awareness as a basis for compassionate action. Aims This study examined the impact of mindful self-compassion on depression, anxiety, stress, dermatology-specific quality of life, self-esteem and well-being in a sample of 88 adults aged 18-55 years suffering from chronic skin conditions. Methods This study used an experimental waitlist control design. Participants were recruited from two skin clinics using purposive sampling in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Pre-test data was collected through self-reported questionnaires on psychological distress, dermatology-specific quality of life, self-esteem and well-being. Participants who were experiencing psychological distress were randomly assigned to either the experimental or waitlist control group. The intervention named 'mindful self-compassion' was delivered through an online platform, twice a week, over a period of 4 weeks. Post-test data was collected later on all variables. Results ANCOVA was utilised where pre-test scores were used as covariates. Differences in pre-test and post-test scores between the intervention group and waitlist control group for depression, anxiety, stress, dermatology-specific quality of life, self-esteem and well-being were analysed. Participants in the intervention group were found to have lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress as compared to the waitlist control group and also had enhanced levels of self-esteem, well-being and dermatological quality of life. These differences were found to be statistically significant (p < 0.001). Limitations The sample reflected heterogenous skin conditions, not a specific skin condition. The study was quantitative in nature, and we could not use any qualitative methods to assess the subjective experience of participants. Due to time constraints, follow-up data could not be gathered from participants to assess long-term effects on participants. Conclusion Mindful self-compassion can be effectively used to manage psychological distress in skin conditions. Dermatologists can become acquainted with basic signs of mental distress and the importance of psychological interventions. By collaborating with mental health professionals, patients can be given holistic treatment.

Applying selenium (Se) fertilizer is the only way to alleviate soil Se deficiency. Although effects of nanoselenium foliar application on plant growth and stress resistance have been extensively investigated, soil application of nanoselenium on soil microorganisms and their relationship with crop quality and soil health remains unclear. In this study, a steady-state homogeneous nanoparticle of epigallocatechin gallate Se (ESe) was synthesized, and a pot experiment was conducted applying ESe at five concentrations (0, 1, 10, 50, and 100 mg kg-1) to the tea planattion soil. The study revealed a significant increase in Se concentration in soil and tea with ESe application and identified 2.43-7.8 mg kg-1 as the safe and optimal range for soil application. Specifically, the moderate dose of ESe improved the tea quality [reduced tea polyphenols (TP), increased free amino acids (AA), and reduced TP/AA] and soil quality index (SQI). Besides, in marure tea leaves, antioxidant enzyme activities [promote catalase (CAT) superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD)] increased, while level of oxidative stress [malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion (O2-)] decreased with ESe application. The 16S rRNA of the soil bacteria showed that ESe application significantly changed the community structure of soil bacteria but did not alter the diversity of the bacteria and the abundance of dominant taxa (phylum and genus levels). Statistical analysis of the taxonomic and functional profiles (STAMP) detected 21 differential taxa (genus level), mainly low-abundance ones, under the ESe application. Linear regression and random forest (RF) modeling revealed that the low-abundance bacterial taxa were significantly correlated with SQI (R2 = 0.28, p < 0.01) and tea quality (R2 = 0.23-0.37, p < 0.01). Thus, the study's findings suggest that ESe application affects soil and tea quality by modulating the low-abundance taxa in soil. The study also highlights the crucial role of low-abundance bacterial taxa of the rhizosphere in regulating soil functions under the ESe application.

The aim of this prospective observational study was to evaluate the efficacy of a cycle of sulfate-arsenical-ferruginous mud bath therapy on pain, function, and sleep quality in patients with chronic low-back pain (CLBP). One hundred twenty-three patients treated at Levico Spa Center (Italy) with 12 daily local mud packs and generalized thermal baths were included in this experience. General medical assessments were performed before starting the therapy, at the end of the treatment, and 3 months later. Pain intensity and stiffness were measured by a 0 to 10 cm visual analogue scale (VAS); the range of mobility of the lumbar spine was evaluated using the Schober test and functional disability by the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDI). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess the sleep quality. The VAS score for pain and stiffness showed a significant reduction (p < 0.0001) at the end of the treatment persisting for 3 months of follow-up. Similarly, a significant improvement was found for the Schober test and RMDQ. Finally, we showed a significant decrease of PSQI score at the end of the cycle of mud bath and at 3 months of follow-up. The Spearman analysis showed a significant positive correlation between the score of PSQI and VAS pain, VAS stiffness, and RMDQ. In conclusion, this preliminary study confirms the beneficial and long-term efficacy of balneotherapy on pain and function and, for the first one, shows the positive effect on quality of sleep in patients with CLBP treated with a cycle of mud bath therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is an alternative form of treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), that incorporates various exercises to optimize tongue placement and increase oropharyngeal tone. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to determine the efficacy of OMT in OSA patients. DATA SOURCES: PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science. REVIEW METHODS: Using PRISMA guidelines, a directed search strategy was performed for randomized control trials (RCTs) published prior to March 24, 2023, featuring 10+ patients with OSA undergoing mono-therapeutic OMT. The primary outcome of interest was apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Secondary outcomes included subjective sleepiness, sleep-related quality-of-life, and snoring frequency. RESULTS: Of the 1244 abstracts that were identified, 7 RCTs involving 310 patients met inclusion criteria. Adult OMT patients had a statistically significant improvement in AHI (MD -10.2; 95% CI, -15.6, -4.8, p < 0.05), subjective sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale; MD -5.66; 95% CI, -6.82, -4.5, p < 0.05), sleep-related quality-of-life (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; MD -3.00; 95% CI, -4.52, -1.49, p < 0.05), and minimum oxygen saturation (MD 2.71; 95% CI, 0.23, 5.18, p < 0.05) when compared with sham OMT or no therapy. Within the single RCT featuring pediatric OMT patients, patients had poor compliance (<50%) and did not show any improvements in AHI, minimum oxygen saturation, or snoring frequency. CONCLUSION: OMT may provide a reasonable alternative for OSA patients who cannot tolerate CPAP or other more established treatment options. OMT benefits appear limited in children due to poor compliance. More studies are required to evaluate compliance and the long-term effects of OMT on OSA outcomes. Fluoride (F-) contamination of groundwater is a prevalent environmental issue threatening public health worldwide and in India. This study targets an investigation into spatial distribution and contamination sources of fluoride in Dhanbad, India, to help develop tailored mitigation strategies. A triad of Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) models (Fuzzy-TOPSIS), machine learning algorithms {logistic regression (LR), classification and regression tree (CART), Random Forest (RF)}, and classical methods has been undertaken here. Groundwater samples (n = 283) were collected for the purpose. Based on permissible limit (1.5 ppm) of fluoride in drinking water as set by the World Health Organization, samples were categorized as Unsafe (n = 67) and Safe (n = 216) groups. Mean fluoride concentration in Safe (0.63 ± 0.02 ppm) and Unsafe (3.69 ± 0.3 ppm) groups differed significantly (t-value = -10.04, p < 0.05). Physicochemical parameters (pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, total hardness, NO3-, HCO3-, SO42-, Cl-, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+ and F-) were recorded from samples of each group. The samples from 'Unsafe group' showed alkaline pH, the abundance of Na+ and HCO3- ions, prolonged rock water interaction in the aquifer, silicate weathering, carbonate dissolution, lack of Ca2+ and calcite precipitation which together facilitated the F- abundance. Aspatial distribution map of F- contamination was created, pinpointing the "contaminated pockets." Fuzzy- TOPSIS identified that samples from group Safe were closer to the ideal solution. Among these models, the LR proved superior, achieving the highest AUC score of 95.6 % compared to RF (91.3 %) followed by CART (69.4 %). This study successfully identified the primary contributors to F- contamination in groundwater and the developed models can help predicting fluoride contamination in other areas. The combination of different methodologies (Fuzzy-TOPSIS, machine learning algorithms, and classical methods) results in a synergistic effect where the strengths of each approach compensate for the limitations of the other.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture is a potentially effective non-pharmacological treatment for insomnia. OBJECTIVE: We observed the responses of patients with insomnia to acupuncture in routine clinical practice. In addition, we explored patient characteristics that might affect the treatment response to acupuncture for insomnia. METHODS: Medical records of patients with insomnia in a Korean medicine clinic with baseline Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) scores ⩾8 and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores ⩾5 were reviewed. Acupuncture was applied at ST43, GB41, ST41, SI5, HT3, KI10, HT7 and ST3, for 1-2 months. The ISI and PSQI were measured monthly to assess insomnia severity. The effect of acupuncture over time was analyzed using a multilevel linear model for repeated measures. In addition, logistic regression was used to explore predictors of treatment response. RESULTS: A total of 91 patients with insomnia aged 59.2 ± 12.5 years (mean ± standard deviation (SD)) (90.1% female) were included in the analysis. After the acupuncture treatment, ISI scores were significantly reduced by -3.75 (95% confidence interval (CI) = -4.99, -2.50) and -4.69 (95% CI = -6.22, -3.16) after the first and second month, respectively. The PSQI global scores also improved, and sleep duration showed a tendency to increase by 0.35 h (95% CI = -0.17, 0.86) after acupuncture treatment. Three cases of mild fatigue were reported. In addition, higher baseline pain/discomfort predicted a greater likelihood of response after acupuncture treatment (odds ratio (OR) = 1.66, 95% CI = 1.10, 2.60). CONCLUSION: In a real-world setting, the insomnia of outpatients in a clinic was slightly alleviated after acupuncture treatment. These findings require validation by randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a common disabling neurological disorder with severe physical and psychological damage, but there is a lack of convenient and effective non-invasive early prediction methods. This study aimed to develop a new series of non-invasive prediction models for migraine with external validation. METHODS: A total of 188 and 94 subjects were included in the training and validation sets, respectively. A standardized professional questionnaire was used to collect the subjects' 9-item traditional Chinese medicine constitution (TCMC) scores, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score, Zung's Self-rating Anxiety Scale and Self-rating Depression Scale scores. Logistic regression was used to analyze the risk predictors of migraine, and a series of prediction models for migraine were developed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and calibration curve were used to assess the discrimination and calibration of the models. The predictive performance of the models were further validated using external datasets and subgroup analyses were conducted. RESULTS: PSQI score and Qi-depression score were significantly and positively associated with the risk of migraine, with the area of the ROC curves (AUCs) predicting migraine of 0.83 (95% CI:0.77-0.89) and 0.76 (95% CI:0.68-0.84), respectively. Eight non-invasive predictive models for migraine containing one to eight variables were developed using logistic regression, with AUCs ranging from 0.83 (95% CI: 0.77-0.89) to 0.92 (95% CI: 0.89-0.96) for the training set and from 0.76 (95% CI: 0.66-0.85) to 0.83 (95% CI: 0.75-0.91) for the validation set. Subgroup analyses showed that the AUCs of the eight prediction models for predicting migraine in the training and validation sets of different gender and age subgroups ranged from 0.80 (95% CI: 0.63-0.97) to 0.95 (95% CI: 0.91-1.00) and 0.73 (95% CI: 0.64-0.84) to 0.93 (95% CI: 0.82-1.00), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study developed and validated a series of convenient and novel non-invasive prediction models for migraine, which have good predictive ability for migraine in Chinese adults of different genders and ages. It is of great significance for the early prevention, screening, and diagnosis of migraine.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is the second most commonly presenting symptom, after pain, in clinics. Insomnia prevalence in India is 28.1 %. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the effect of Mamsyadi Kwatha in the management of primary insomnia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty patients attending KLE Ayurveda hospital meeting the diagnostic criteria of primary insomnia (DSM IV TR) were enrolled. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: group MK and TK. Intervention in group MK was 24 ml of Mamsyadi Kwatha twice a day and in group TK was 24 ml of Tagaradi Kwatha twice a day for 30 days. Assessment was done through primary outcome measures like Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), insomnia severity index (ISI). Secondary outcome measures were sleep diary recordings of past 15 days and depression anxiety and stress scale (DASS). Follow ups were at base line, 15th and 30th day of interventions. Laboratory assessments of liver function test, haemoglobin, and serum creatinine levels were carried at base line and 30th day of intervention. RESULTS: Effect on primary and secondary outcomes showed that both the drugs were comparable. = Within group comparison of both the drugs showed that they produced significant improvement in PSQI, ESS, ISI, sleep diary variables, and DASS. However, Mamsyadi kwath has additional benefit of early recovery in total sleep. Both the drugs showed good safety profile evaluated through serum creatinine and liver function tests. CONCLUSION: The effects of Mamsyadi Kwatha is comparable to Tagaradi Kwatha. Both drugs produced significant improvement in clinical assessments of insomnia, anxiety, depression, and stress.

Extensive water and chemicals are used in the textile industry processes. Therefore, treatment of textile wastewater is vital to protect the environment, maintain the public health, and recover resources. However, due to poor operation and plant performance the partially treated textile wastewater was directly discharged to a nearby river. Thus, the aim of this study was to characterize the wastewater physicochemical properties and evaluate the performance of the textile factory-activated sludge process wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. In inlet and outlet of the WWTP, samples were collected for 6 months and analyzed on-site and in a laboratory for parameters including, dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, total Kjeldhal nitrogen (TKN), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), nitrite, nitrate, and metallic compounds. The TSS, BOD5, COD, TP, nitrite, ammonia, and total chromium result were above the discharge limit with 73.2 mg/L, 48.45 mg/L, 144.08 mg/L, 7.9 mg/L, 1.36 mg/L, 1.96 mg/L, and 0.16 mg/L, respectively. Multiple regression models were developed for each overall, net moving average, and instantaneous effluent quality index (EQI). The predictor parameters BOD5, TN, COD, TSS, and TP (R2 = 0.995 to 1.000) estimated the net pollution loads of all predictors as 492.55 kg/day and 655.44 kg/day. Except TN, TKN, and NO3, the remaining six performance parameters were violating the permissible limit daily. Furthermore, the overall plant efficiency was predicted as 38 % and 42 % for the moving average and instantaneous EQI, respectively. Our study concluded that the integrated regression models and EQI can easily estimate the plant efficiency and daily possible pollution load.

The present research concentrates on the cumulative use of GPS and GIS technologies, which are excellent resources for analyzing and monitoring divergent physicochemical parameters in groundwater, including pH, TDS, EC, ORP, Ca+2, Mg+2, NO3-, F-, SO4-2, Cl- and PO4-3 with explicit regard to uranium. Garmin GPS is used to record the locations of the sampling points in the Godda study area. The research aims to offer a thorough understanding of the relationship between soil and water, its impact on public health and the extent to which water can be used in various ways based on its quality. Utilizing the inverse distance weighted (IDW) technique, it is examined how these groundwater parameters and the Water Quality Index (WQI) can be estimated spatially. Additionally, a correlation analysis of the water quality parameters is computed to estimate the local population's cancer risk living in the study area. Except for calcium and magnesium, which are present in excess concentrations throughout the study area with the highest values of 325 and 406 mg/l, respectively at Amediha and Meherma, the results showed that the maximum concentration parameters are within limits with the standard. The main reason might be the area's predominance of Alfisol soil type. The radioactive element uranium is found to be in a limited  range. Chemo-toxicity and radiological risk assessment of the whole area lie far below the restricted cancer risk limit i.e., 30 ppb with the highest concentration of 14 ppb in the 'Sunderpahari' region, following the results obtained. The WQI for the area ranges from 'good' to 'very poor.' The results were favorable but a few sites such as 'Boarijor' and its surroundings, require additional attention to enhance groundwater quality. Given uranium's low availability in groundwater the region's cancer risk assessment is below average.

Due to the striving for the development of economy and agriculture, anthropogenic activities in many countries dramatically alter natural hydrology. These activities are primarily responsible for river deterioration. Thus, we need to assess the river environment and take measures for remediation. According to the survey data, the study identified the critical factors causing water quality deterioration and evaluated the aquatic biodiversity in the Wanyu River. First, based on the monitoring data of water (dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP), and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N)), sediment (copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr)), and aquatic biodiversity (fish and hydrophyte), the study identified the critical factors causing river quality deterioration. Second, the study provided some recommendations that would consolidate the restoration efforts. Consequently, because of the government's efforts in building the municipal sewage treatment plant, dredging, and other measures, the river environment improved during the 2020-2021 period. The maximum concentrations of COD, NH3-N, and TP in water were reduced by 17.76%, 26.17%, and 20.93%, respectively. The sediment had no risk of heavy metal pollution in the past 2 years. And we could utilize sludge as garden soil or compost resource. However, reducing agricultural pollution, internal nutrient loading, and cost-effective restoration and evaluation represent significant challenges in the efforts to recover the river ecosystem.

Sleep is the elixir of life. Both healthy populations and patients with chronic diseases experience sleep disturbances in their lifetime. Pharmacological agents to induce sleep in individuals with sleep disturbances pose side effects like tolerance and dependence, warranting the development of alternative non-pharmacological interventions with less or no adverse effects. However, deciphering comprehensive evidence on the translational potential of these alternative therapies remains difficult. In the current paper, we systematically reviewed the recent literature on the effect of non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) on improving sleep quality in both healthy and diseased populations experiencing sleep disturbances. We searched PubMed, Science Direct, Cochrane Controlled Trials, and Web of Science databases from inception to June 2022 for randomized controlled trials and cohort studies evaluating the sleep quality of individuals. We performed a meta-analysis using the random effects model with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) as an outcome measure to evaluate the effect of five distinct NPIs on sleep quality in normal and people with different medical conditions. Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were done for heterogeneity analysis and to check the consistency of results, respectively. In 16 trials reporting on 1885 subjects, that all NPIs like Resistance Training (SMD -0.29, 95% CI -0.64 to 0.05; p = 0.09); Yoga (SMD -0.48, 95% CI -0.72 to -0.25; p < 0.0001); Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (SMD -1.69, 95% CI -2.70 to -0.68; p = 0.001); Music (SMD -1.42, 95% CI -1.99 to -0.85; p < 0.00001); Light (SMD -0.43, 95% CI -0.77 to -0.09; p = 0.01) have substantially decreased the global PSQI scores. The findings of the randomized studies and a cohort study included in qualitative synthesis demonstrated that the global PSQI scores improved significantly as compared to the placebo groups. Despite the limitations of clinical heterogeneity in subjects, our results demonstrate a positive impact of the studied NPIs on sleep quality in individuals experiencing sleep disturbances. However, comprehensive double-blinded controlled trials are indispensable in the future, emphasizing the objective sleep quality and inter-individual differences in response to the intervention.

Limited scientific evidence shows that alpha lipoic acid (ALA) can induce regression rates of low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSILs), but the mechanisms of these effects have not been elucidated. To gain a broader insight into its therapeutic potential and mechanisms of action, the effects of 3 months of supplementation with 600 mg of ALA on antioxidant and lipid status parameters in 100 patients with LSILs were investigated in a randomized, placebo-controlled study. The obtained results are discussed in terms of patients' initial metabolic status and diet quality (particularly nutritional intake of antioxidants). The obtained results showed that oxidative status biomarkers were not significantly affected by ALA supplementation. However, serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was positively affected in the subgroup of patients with higher dietary antioxidant intake. Surprisingly, ALA supplementation resulted in a small but statistically significant increase in serum low density lipoprotein (LDL), and the observed effect was significantly affected by the initial lipid status of the participants. Larger studies are necessary to gain additional insights on the clinical significance of ALA as an antioxidant and hypolipemic agent and to optimize its potential application in LSIL treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of Tiaoshen (regulating the spirit) acupuncture on cognitive function and sleep quality in patients with primary insomnia (PI). METHODS: Sixty patients with PI were randomly divided into an observation group (30 cases, 2 cases dropped off) and a control group (30 cases, 2 cases dropped off, 1 case was excluded). The patients in the observation group were treated with acupuncture at Baihui (GV 20), Shenting (GV 24), Sishencong (EX-HN 1), and bilateral Benshen (GB 13), Shenmen (HT 7), Neiguan (PC 6), Sanyinjiao (SP 6). The patients in the control group were treated with shallow needling at non-effective points. Each treatment was provided for 30 min, once every other day, 3 treatments per week for 4 weeks. The Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA), digit span test (DST), trail making test (TMT)-A, Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and fatigue scale-14 (FS-14) were used to assess cognitive function and sleep quality before and after treatment, as well as in follow-up of 4-week after treatment completion. Correlation analysis was conducted between the differences in PSQI scores and differences in MoCA scores before and after treatment in the observation group. RESULTS: Compared with before treatment, the total score, visuospatial and executive function score and delayed memory score of MoCA as well as DST backward score were increased (P<0.01), while TMT-A time, PSQI and FS-14 scores were significantly reduced (P<0.01) after treatment and in follow-up in the observation group. Compared with before treatment, the PSQI score in the control group was reduced (P<0.01, P<0.05). After treatment and in follow-up, the observation group had significantly higher total score, visuospatial and executive function score, delayed memory score of MoCA, and DST backward score compared to the control group (P<0.05, P<0.01). In the observation group, the TMT-A time was significantly shorter than that in the control group (P<0.05, P<0.01), and the PSQI and FS-14 scores were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.01). In the observation group, there was a negative correlation between the difference in PSQI scores (post-treatment minus pre-treatment) and the difference in MoCA scores (post-treatment minus pre-treatment) (r=-0.481, P<0.01). A similar negative correlation was found between the difference in PSQI scores (follow-up minus pre-treatment) and the difference in MoCA scores (follow-up minus pre-treatment) (r=-0.282, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Tiaoshen acupuncture could improve cognitive function, enhance sleep quality, and alleviate daytime fatigue in patients with PI. The improvement in cognitive function in patients with PI is correlated with the improvement in sleep quality.

The Pearl River (PR) is China's second-largest river, playing a crucial role in regulating and supplying water in the southeast. However, for the last decade, the PR has been experiencing water quality deterioration due to population growth, rapid economic development, and diverse human activities, particularly in its delta areas. This study analyzed the characteristics and evolution of eight water quality variables, including pH values (pH), water temperature (WT), dissolved oxygen (DO), five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), permanganate index (PI), total phosphorus (TP), ammonia nitrogen (NH3N), and fluoride (F-), which were monitored monthly at 16 water quality monitoring stations from January 2009 to August 2019. Overall, annual average BOD5 and F- concentrations met Class I water quality standards, while TP and NH3N conformed to lower standards. The cluster results showed noticeable differences for parameter grouping (DO-organic parameters-nutrient and solutes), seasonal variation (wet and dry), and water quality status (contaminated-remediating-fine). The Water Quality Index (WQI) ranged from 8.3 ("very poor") to 91.7 ("excellent") in the entire basin from 2009 to 2019, and NH3N-DO based WQImins were identified using the All-Subsets Linear Regression method. The fitting results of the Generalized Additive Models displayed that the deviance explained by natural factors ranged from 37.2% to 61.3%, while the socioeconomic explanation exceeded 70%. The WQImin component evolution (2003-2019) of Shenzhen River estuary, the most important part of the PR estuary, agreed with key parameter variations in heterogeneous clusters in the entire basin. Moreover, Shenzhen's water quality remediation applications indicated that reasonable-efficient-powerful efforts and support from governments could accelerate recovery. For the management departments, consistent measures should be strictly enforced, and elaborate regionalized management based on clusters could be attempted to maintain excellent water quality.

BACKGROUND: Evaluating traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) quality is a powerful method to ensure TCM safety. TCM quality evaluation methods primarily include characterization evaluations and separate physical, chemical, and biological evaluations; however, these approaches have limitations. Nevertheless, researchers have recently integrated evaluation methods, advancing the emergence of frontier research tools, such as TCM quality markers (Q-markers). These studies are largely based on biological activity, with weak correlations between the quality indices and quality. However, these TCM quality indices focus on the individual efficacies of single bioactive components and, therefore, do not accurately represent the TCM quality. Conventionally, provenance, place of origin, preparation, and processing are the key attributes influencing TCM quality. In this study, we identified TCM-attribute-based quality indices and developed a comprehensive multiweighted multi-index-based TCM quality composite evaluation index (QCEI) for grading TCM quality. METHODS: The area of origin, number of growth years, and harvest season are considered key TCM quality attributes. In this study, licorice was the model TCM to investigate the quality indicators associated with key factors that are considered to influence TCM quality using multivariate statistical analysis, identify biological-evaluation-based pharmacological activity indicators by network pharmacology, establish real quality indicators, and develop a QCEI-based model for grading TCM quality using a machine learning model. Finally, to determine whether different licorice quality grades differently reduced the inflammatory response, TNF-α and IL-1ß levels were measured in RAW 264.7 cells using ELISA analysis. RESULTS: The 21 quality indices are suitable candidates for establishing a method for grading licorice quality. A computer model was established using SVM analysis to predict the TCM quality composite evaluation index (TCM QCEI). The tenfold cross validation accuracy was 90.26%. Licorice diameter; total flavonoid content; similarities of HPLC chromatogram fingerprints recorded at 250 and 330 nm; contents of liquiritin apioside, liquiritin, glycyrrhizic acid, and liquiritigenin; and pharmacological activity quality index were identified as the key indices for constructing the model for evaluating licorice quality and determining which model contribution rates were proportionally weighted in the model. The ELISA analysis results preliminarily suggest that the inflammatory responses were likely better reduced by premium-grade than by first-class licorice. CONCLUSIONS: In the present study, traditional sensory characterization and modern standardized processes based on production process and pharmacological efficacy evaluation were integrated for use in the assessment of TCM quality. Multidimensional quality evaluation indices were integrated with a machine learning model to identify key quality indices and their corresponding weight coefficients, to establish a multiweighted multi-index and comprehensive quality index, and to construct a QCEI-based model for grading TCM quality. Our results could facilitate and guide the development of TCM quality control research.

The impact of environmental pollution in air and water is reflected mainly in the soil ecosystem as it impairs soil functions. Also, since the soil is the habitat for billions of organisms, the biodiversity is in turn altered. Microbes are precise sensors of ecological contamination, and bacteria have a key and important function in terms of bioremediation of the contaminated soil. Hence in the current work, we aimed at assessing the unidentified bacterial population through Illumina MiSeq sequencing technology and their community structural changes in different levels of petroleum-contaminated soil and sludge samples (aged, sludge, and leakage soil) to identify unique bacteria for their potential application in remediation. The studies showed that major bacterial consortiums namely, Proteobacteria (57%), Alphaproteobacteria (31%), and Moraxellaceae (23%) were present in aged soil, whereas Proteobacteria (52%), Alphaproteobacteria (33%), and Rhodobacteraceae (28%) were dominantly found in sludge soil. In leakage soil, Proteobacteria (59%), Alphaproteobacteria (33%), and Rhodobacteraceae (29%) were abundantly present. The Venn diagrams are used to analyze the distribution of abundances in individual operational taxonomic units (OTUs) within three soil samples. After data filtering, they were grouped into OTU clusters and 329 OTUs were identified from the three soil samples. Among the 329, 160 OTUs were common in the three soil samples. The bacterial diversity is estimated using alpha diversity indices and Shanon index and was found to be 4.490, 4.073 and 4.631 in aged soil, sludge soil and leakage soil, respectively and similarly richness was found to be 618, 417 and 418. The heat map was generated by QIIME software and from the top 50 enriched genera few microbes such as Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Mycobacterium, Sphingomonas and Paracoccus, were shown across all the samples. In addition, we also analyzed various physicochemical properties of soil including pH, temperature, salinity, electrical conductivity, alkalinity, total carbon, total organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to calculate the soil quality index (SQI). The SQI of aged, sludge and leakage soil samples were 0.73, 0.64, and 0.89, respectively. These findings show the presence of unexplored bacterial species which could be applied for hydrocarbon remediation and further they can be exploited for the same.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of Bushen Anshen acupuncture (acupuncture for tonifying kidney and calming spirit ) in treating perimenopausal insomnia (PMI) of kidney-yin deficiency. METHODS: A total of 72 patients with PMI of kidney-yin deficiency were randomized into an observation group (36 cases, 1 case dropped off) and a control group (36 cases, 1 case dropped off). Acupuncture was applied at Baihui (GV 20) and bilateral Shenshu (BL 23), Taixi (KI 3), Anmian (Extra) in the observation group, while sham acupuncture of shallow needling at non-acupoints was applied in the control group. The treatment was required once every other day, 3 times a week for 10 times in the two groups. Before and after treatment, Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) was used to evaluate the subjective sleep quality, and polysomnography (PSG) was used to monitor the objective sleep quality in the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment, the scores of sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, hypnotic, daytime dysfunction and total score of PSQI were decreased compared with those before treatment in the observation group (P<0.01), the scores of sleep duration, sleep efficiency and total score of PSQI were decreased compared with those before treatment in the control group (P<0.05); the scores of sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep efficiency, hypnotic and total score of PSQI in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the sleep time was prolonged, the sleep efficiency was improved, the sleep latency and the awake time after falling asleep were shortened, the arousal awake index was reduced (P<0.01) when PSG indexes were monitored, and the percentage of non-rapid eye movement sleep period 1 (N1%) was decreased while the percentage of non-rapid eye movement sleep period 3 (N3%) was increased (P<0.05) compared with those before treatment in the observation group; there was no statistical difference in the PSG indexes compared with those before treatment in the control group (P>0.05). After treatment, compared with the control group, the sleep time was prolonged, the sleep efficiency was improved, the sleep latency and the awake time after falling asleep were shortened, the arousal awake index and N1% were decreased in the observation group (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Bushen Anshen acupuncture can effectively improve the subjective and objective sleep quality in PMI patients of kidney-yin deficiency.

In the present study, we developed a new Swedish phosphorus diatom index (PDISE) to improve the poor fit of existing indices to match the needs of water managers to detect and mitigate eutrophication. We took advantage of a large amount of data (820 Swedish stream sites) collected in recent years. During our work, we found an unexpected bimodal response of the diatom assemblages to phosphorus. The taxa clustered either into an assemblage with a low or with a high site-specific averaged TP optimum (a calculated value comprised of the diatom taxa-specific optima). We could not find a characteristic diatom assemblage for sites with intermediate site-specific averaged TP optima. To our knowledge, this bimodal community response has not been shown earlier. The PDISE correlated more strongly than the currently used TDI to changes in TP concentrations. Thus, the PDISE should replace the TDI in the Swedish standard method. The modeled TP optima (expressed as categories) were different compared to the TDI for most of the taxa included in the index, indicating that the realized niche for these morphotaxa was different between Sweden and the UK where the TDI was developed originally. With a r2 of 0.68, the correlation of the PDISE to TP is among the highest reported for other diatom nutrient indices globally; thus, we believe that it might be worth to test it for other bioregions with similar geography and climate.
