Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) supplementation on in vitro fermentation and animal performance using a backgrounding diet. In experiment 1, incubations were conducted on three separate days (replicates). Treatments were control (CTL, without NPN), urea (U), urea-biuret (UB), and urea-biuret-nitrate (UBN) mixtures. Except for control, treatments were isonitrogenous using 1% U inclusion as a reference. Ruminal fluid was collected from two Angus-crossbred steers fed a backgrounding diet plus 100 g of a UBN mixture for at least 35 d. The concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), and total gas and methane (CH4) production were determined at 24 h of incubation. In experiment 2, 72 Angus-crossbred yearling steers (303 ±â€…29 kg of body weight [BW]) were stratified by BW and randomly allocated in nine pens (eight animals/pen and three pens/treatment). Steers consumed a backgrounding diet formulated to match the diet used in the in vitro fermentation experiment. Treatments were U, UB, and UBN and were isonitrogenous using 1% U inclusion as a reference. Steers were adapted to the NPN supplementation for 17 d. Then, digestibility evaluation was performed after 13 d of full NPN supplementation for 4 d using 36 steers (12 steers/treatment). After that, steer performance was evaluated for 56 d (24 steers/treatment). In experiment 1, NPN supplementation increased the concentration of NH3-N and VFA (P < 0.01) without affecting the IVOMD (P = 0.48), total gas (P = 0.51), and CH4 production (P = 0.57). Additionally, in vitro fermentation parameters did not differ (P > 0.05) among NPN sources. In experiment 2, NPN supplementation did not change dry matter and nutrient intake (P > 0.05). However, UB and UBN showed lower (P < 0.05) nutrient digestibility than U, except for starch (P = 0.20). Dry matter intake (P = 0.28), average daily gain (P = 0.88), and gain:feed (P = 0.63) did not differ among steers receiving NPN mixtures. In conclusion, tested NPN mixtures have the potential to be included in the backgrounding diets without any apparent negative effects on animal performance and warrant further studies to evaluate other variables to fully assess the response of feeding these novel NPN mixtures.


Nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) supplements can be used as a nitrogen source for ruminants fed low-protein diets. The most common NPN source is urea, included typically at a range between 0.5% and 1% of the diet dry matter in growing beef cattle. Although other NPN sources and mixtures are available, there is scarce information regarding their use in ruminant production. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of NPN sources on in vitro fermentation and animal performance using a backgrounding diet. In experiment 1, three different incubations were performed for 24 h. Treatments were control (without NPN), urea (U), urea­biuret (UB), and urea­biuret­nitrate (UBN) mixtures. In experiment 2, 72 crossbred yearling steers were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: U, UB, and UBN mixtures. Diets were formulated to contain the same nitrogen concentration in both experiments. In experiment 1, supplementation of NPN increased the in vitro fermentation, but there were no differences among NPN sources. In experiment 2, steers performed similarly among NPN sources. These findings suggest that NPN mixtures have the potential to be included in the backgrounding diets without detrimental effects. Further studies should evaluate other variables (e.g., fermentation dynamic and microbial protein supply) when using these novel mixtures.

Increasing soil cadmium (Cd) contamination is a serious threat to human food health and safety. In order to reduce Cd uptake and Cd toxicity in silage maize, hydroponic tests were conducted to investigate the effect of exogenous Cd on the toxicity of silage maize in this study. In the study, a combination of Cd (5, 20, 50, 80, and 10 µM) treatments was applied in a hydroponic system. With increasing Cd concentration, Cd significantly inhibited the total root length (RL), root surface area (SA), root volume (RV), root tip number (RT), and branching number (RF) of maize seedlings, which were reduced by 28.1 to 71.3%, 20.2 to 64.9%, 11.2 to 56.5%, 43.7 to 63.4%, and 38.2 to 72.6%, respectively. The excessive Cd accumulation inhibited biomass accumulation and reduced silage maize growth, photosynthesis, and chlorophyll content and activated the antioxidant systems, including increasing lipid peroxidation and stimulating catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD), but reduced the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in the root. Besides, selenium (Se) significantly decreased the Cd concentration of the shoot and root by 27.1% and 35.1% under Cd50, respectively. Our results reveal that exogenously applied Cd reduced silage maize growth and impaired photosynthesis. Whereas silage maize can tolerate Cd by increasing the concentration of ascorbate and glutathione and activating the antioxidant defense system, the application of exogenous selenium significantly reduced the content of Cd in silage maize.

BACKGROUND: Tail biting (TB) is a welfare issue with economic consequences due to infections and ill-thrift. This study aimed to reduce tail injuries in a high-performing non-tail-docking pig herd. RESULTS: During eleven years preceding the trial, the annual incidence of tail injuries registered at slaughter in pigs from the herd increased from 3% (equivalent to the national mean) to 10%. It was positively correlated to a high weight gain and negatively correlated to daylight length. The overall incidence of tail injuries during the four years preceding the trial was 9.2% with significant differences between four identically structured buildings for fatteners (I < II < III < IV). The feed was enriched with amino acids, minerals and fibres. The buildings used different illumination strategies, I: standard fluorescent tubes with an invisible flickering light of 30-40% for 14 h daily, II: non-flickering led light for 14 h daily, III (control) and IV: standard fluorescent tubes for 2 h daily. IV had free access to manipulable material (hay-silage), while I-III was offered 100-200 g daily. During the adaptation period (6 months), the incidence of tail injuries decreased significantly in all buildings to a mean of 5.4%. The largest decrease (from 11.4 to 4.3%) was obtained in IV. During the trial period (12 months), the mean incidence of tail injuries decreased in all groups to a mean of 3.0%. There were no differences in treatment incidences of individual pigs due to TB between groups, but the use of enriched pellets due to TB in pens was lowest in II. The low incidence of tail injuries was retained during the post-trial period (6 months) when all buildings used artificial illumination for two hours per day. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of TB in fast growing non-tail-docked pigs in the herd was successfully reduced by supplementing the feed with amino acids, minerals, vitamins and fibres. Additional manipulable material accelerated that process and non-flickering illumination may have had an impact in preventing TB. The results obtained do not support the need for tail-docking of pigs, provided that the needs of the pigs in terms of feed ingredients, stocking density and access to manipulable materials are fulfilled.

We hypothesized that cottonseed cake in confined Nellore young bulls' diet as fiber source, could maintain or improve the nutrient intake, and productive and metabolic parameters. It was evaluated the total replacement of whole plant corn silage (WPCS) by cottonseed cake (CSC) as a source of fiber in the diet. A completely randomized design with two treatments and 12 replications was used. The treatments were two experimental diets containing 300 g/kg of WPCS or CSC as roughage. All animals at 0, 15, 30, 60 and 112 days were weighed to monitor productive performance and nutrient intake. Dry matter intakes, organic matter, neutral detergent fiber, physically effective neutral detergent fiber, crude protein and non-fiber carbohydrates of the WPCS treatment cattle were higher (p < 0.05), and the ethereal extract intake of cattle fed CSC diet was higher. The BW of cattle fed WPCS was higher in the two initial periods of confinement (p < 0.05). Animals from both treatments showed linear growth during the confinement period. There was a fiber source × period interaction for total weight gain (TWG), average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (FE) (p < 0.05), with the lowest in the first 15 days and the highest at 30 days, reflecting a compensatory gain in animals fed with CSC. Bulls fed with CSC showed negative TWG and ADG in the first period (p < 0.05), but recovered in the following periods, surpassing that of the SC treatment in the last two periods. There was negative EF of bulls fed with CSC in the first period (P < 0.05), but in the following periods the CSC diet did not differ from the WPCS diet. The animals fed CSC diet showed a higher concentration of cholesterol and glucose in the blood plasma (p < 0.05). The forage-free diet containing cottonseed cake as a source of fiber replacing corn silage promoted better animal performance.

The effects of the addition of molasses (5 and 10% of dry matter: DM basis; M5 and M10 respectively) with or without urea (2%; U2, U2 + M5 and U2 + M10) on chemical and mineral composition, silage quality, microbial populations, buffering capacity and fermentation/digestion characteristics of common reed (Phragmites australis) ensiled under anaerobic conditions were investigated. The additives changed the silage quality of common reed compared with the control. Crude protein content was significantly (p < 0.0001) increased in urea-containing silages, whereas ash-free neutral detergent fibre concentration decreased in M10 compared with the control (p = 0.05). Treatment with 2% urea (U2) resulted in the reduction of most measured minerals with a severe decrease in iron concentration. The amount of gas produced after 96 h of incubation was, respectively, higher for U2, M10, U2M10, U2M5 and M5 compared with the control (p < 0.0001). Although the greatest in vitro dry matter digestibility and in vitro organic matter digestibility (96 h) were observed in U2 (p < 0.0001), no significant differences were found between U2 and M10. Supplementation with 10% molasses (M10) significantly increased lactic acid concentration, aerobic stability and total bacteria compared with other treatments (p < 0.0001). Moreover, DM loss (p = 0.0004), total yeast and mould (p < 0.0001) were significantly decreased as a result of 10% molasses treatment. Overall, it can be suggested that treating silage with 10% molasses (M10) has the potential to efficiently improve the nutritive value of common reed.

Hydrolysable tannins (HT) show potential as silage additive for autumn herbage silages, high in (rumen degradable) protein, as they may reduce proteolysis. Additionally, they have abilities to form pH-reversible tannin-protein complexes, non-degradable in the rumen but degradable in the abomasum and intestines of ruminants. Therefore they can improve milk N efficiency and shift N excretions from urine to faeces, possibly mitigating the environmental impact of ruminants. In this study, two small bunker silos were filled with autumn grass. One was treated with 20 g/kg DM HT extract (TAN) (TannoSan-L), the other with 8 mg/kg DM inoculant containing lactic acid bacteria (INO) (Bonsilage Fit G). Secondly, micro-silos (2.75 L) were filled with four treatments; (1) grass without additive (CON) (n = 5); (2) TAN (n = 5); (3) INO (n = 5); and (4) TAN + INO (n = 5). The bunker silos were used in a cross-over feeding experiment with periods of 4 weeks involving 22 lactating Holstein cows (average ± SD: 183 ± 36.3 days in milk, 665 ± 71.0 kg body weight, and 33.8 ± 3.91 kg/day milk yield). The HT dose was insufficient to reduce proteolysis or alter chemical composition and nutritional value in the micro- and bunker silages. Including grass silage added with TAN (3.2 g HT/kg DM) in the diet, did not affect feed intake nor fat and protein corrected milk yield in comparison to feeding the grass silage added with INO in a similar diet. The TAN-fed cows had an increased faecal N excretion and decreased apparent total-tract N and organic matter digestibility, but no improvement in the cows' N utilization could be confirmed in milk and blood urea levels. Overall, feeding an autumn grass silage treated with 20 g/kg chestnut HT extract did not affect the performance of dairy cows in comparison to feeding an autumn grass silage treated with a lactic acid bacteria inoculant.

A colostragem é essencial para a saúde dos bezerros neonatos, uma vez que não há a transferência de imunidade através da placenta, ou seja, o contato inicial do organismo com anticorpos se dá através da primeira mamada, onde há transferência da imunidade passiva. Sendo assim, o objetivo do trabalho é revisar os benefícios da acidificação ou silagem do colostro para otimizar a conservação da dieta líquida em fazendas; analisar o impacto no desempenho de bezerros em comparação com o colostro tradicional refrigerado em aleitamentos convencionais. O volume ideal preconizado é, no mínimo, 10% do peso vivo do animal nas primeiras duas horas e mais 5% do peso vivo nas seis a oito horas seguintes a primeira ingestão, para que se obtenha um bom desenvolvimento durante o crescimento, caso contrário, a falta da administração do colostro nas primeiras horas de vida predispõe enfermidades, tais como pneumonia e diarreia, prejudicando assim a saúde e consequentemente o desempenho em relação a outros animais que receberam uma colostragem adequada. Problemas com a qualidade do colostro surgem devido ao armazenamento inadequado, especialmente em propriedades sem refrigeração. A falta de sistemas de congelamento resulta em administração de leite em temperatura ambiente por períodos prolongados, prejudicando assim a imunidade e nutrição dos bezerros durante a colostragem. Todavia, há alternativas para o problema tal como o fornecimento de silagem de colostro. Em alguns casos, o processo de acidificação demanda a adição de ácidos no leite, a fim de evitar o crescimento de microrganismos patogênicos. O principal aspecto positivo do leite acidificado é a manutenção em temperatura ambiente, ou seja, não há a necessidade de passar por processos de refrigeração.


Colostrum is essential for the health of newborn calves, since there is no transfer of immunity through the placenta, that is, the body's initial contact with antibodies occurs through the first feeding, where there is a transfer of passive immunity. Therefore, the objective of the work is to review the benefits of acidifying or colostrum silage to optimize the conservation of liquid diets on farms; analyze the impact on calf performance compared to traditional refrigerated colostrum in conventional sucklers. The recommended ideal volume is at least 10% of the animal's live weight in the first two hours and a further 5% of its live weight in the six to eight hours following the first ingestion, so that good development is achieved during growth, otherwise, the lack of colostrum administration in the first hours of life predisposes diseases, such as pneumonia and diarrhea, thus harming health and consequently performance in relation to other animals that received adequate colostrum. Problems with colostrum quality arise due to inadequate storage, especially in unrefrigerated properties. The lack of freezing systems results in milk being administered at room temperature for prolonged periods, thus damaging the calves immunity and nutrition during colostrum. However, there are alternatives to the problem such as the supply of colostrum silage. In some cases, the acidification process requires the addition of acids to the milk in order to prevent the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. The main positive aspect of acidified milk is that it remains at room temperature, that is, there is no need to undergo refrigeration processes.


El calostro es esencial para la salud de los terneros recién nacidos, ya que no existe transferencia de inmunidad a través de la placenta, es decir, el contacto inicial del cuerpo con los anticuerpos ocurre a través de la primera alimentación, donde existe una transferencia de inmunidad pasiva. Por lo tanto, el objetivo del trabajo es revisar los beneficios de acidificar o ensilar el calostro para optimizar la conservación de dietas líquidas en granjas; analizar el impacto en el rendimiento de los terneros en comparación con el calostro refrigerado tradicional en lechones convencionales. El volumen ideal recomendado es al menos el 10% del peso vivo del animal en las dos primeras horas y otro 5% de su peso vivo en las seis a ocho horas siguientes a la primera ingesta, para que se consiga un buen desarrollo durante el crecimiento, en caso contrario. la falta de administración de calostro en las primeras horas de vida predispone a enfermedades, como neumonía y diarrea, perjudicando la salud y consecuentemente el rendimiento en relación a otros animales que recibieron el calostro adecuado. Los problemas con la calidad del calostro surgen debido a un almacenamiento inadecuado, especialmente en propiedades no refrigeradas. La falta de sistemas de congelación provoca que la leche se administre a temperatura ambiente durante períodos prolongados, dañando así la inmunidad y la nutrición de los terneros durante el calostro. Sin embargo, existen alternativas al problema como el suministro de ensilaje de calostro. En algunos casos, el proceso de acidificación requiere la adición de ácidos a la leche para evitar el crecimiento de microorganismos patógenos. El principal aspecto positivo de la leche acidificada es que se mantiene a temperatura ambiente, es decir, no es necesario someterse a procesos de refrigeración.

The objective was to assess the in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics, methane production, and biohydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids of diets with two protected fat (PF) sources from soybean or linseed oil, two levels of PF (0 and 6%) and two forage sources (canola silage (CS) or alfalfa hay (AH)) in a factorial 2x2x2 completely randomised design. Only fatty acids content at final incubation was affected (P<0.05) by triple interaction, where C18:2 was highest with AH plus 6% soybean PF (4.41mg/g DM), while C18:3 was with CS plus 6% linseed oil protected (1.98mg/g DM). C18:2 cis-9 trans-11 had high concentration (308 mg/g DM; P<0.05) with AH plus 6% PF regardless PF type, and C18:1 trans-11 was higher with 6% PF than without PF (13.41 vs 7.89 mg/g DM). Cumulative methane production was not affected by treatments (0.9973 ± 0.1549 mmol/g DM; P>0.05). Gas production and in vitro NDF digestibility were lower with 6% PF of linseed than soybean (160.88 vs 150.97 ml; and 69.28vs 62.89 %, respectively P<0.05). With linseed PF the NH3-N concentration was highest in CS than AH (41.27 vs 27.95 mg/dL; P<0.05) but IVDMD had the opposite result (78.54 vs 85.04). In conclusion, although methane production was not affected and in vitro digestibility and gas production were reduced with linseed PF, the concentration of C18:3 and C18:1 trans-11 was increased, which could improve the lipid profile of milk. The negative effects on digestibility were less with AH than of CS regardless of PF type and level.

This study aimed to assess the behavior and stress status of pregnant sows following supplementation with Italian ryegrass silage (IRS) and the impact of feeding the IRS on feeding costs. Six sows with an initial body weight (BW) of 238.6 ± 5.9 kg were allotted to a 6 × 3 Latin square design with a 5-day acclimatization period followed by a 5-day data collection period. A commercial diet was replaced by IRS on a dry matter (DM) basis up to 0%, 9%, and 13% in the control treatment and the two test treatments, respectively. Apart from collecting data on daily feed intake and BW, urine was collected, and video footage was recorded for the last day of each treatment for analysis of urinary cortisol and behavior. There were no leftovers with all diets and nutrient uptake was unaffected (p > 0.05), while BW gain decreased (p < 0.05) to be a limited range from 1% to 3%, with increased inclusion of IRS. Both the behavior of sows and cortisol concentration were unaffected (p > 0.05). Furthermore, it was estimated that feeding 13% DM of IRS would reduce feed costs by 17%. IRS would be acceptable in replacing up to 13% of the commercial diet and cutting feeding costs.

In this study, we evaluated the biomass yield, physico-chemical characteristics, nutrient composition, and feeding value of oat (Avena sativa) grown without irrigation ensiled with or without supplemental inoculant following different wilting durations. Oat forage at early dough stage (79 days after sowing) were harvested to assess the biomass yield, nutrient contents, and mineral composition. Oats were ensiled with or without the addition of inoculant and different wilting durations (0, 24, and 48 h) in 3 × 2 factorial arrangement. After the ensiling (120 days), the oat silages were opened, quality was measured in terms of pH, ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), smell, structure, color, and Flieg point. Nutritional composition and feeding values were analyzed in oat silages. Oat grown without irrigation yielded 32 ton/ha fresh matter. Mean dry matter (DM), organic matter, crude protein (CP), crude fiber, crude ash, ether extract, nitrogen free extract, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent lignin, non-structural carbohydrates, hemicellulose, and in vitro dry matter digestibility of oat forage were 32.77%, 90.41%, 11.31%, 28.69%, 9.59%, 3.99%, 46.43%, 36.32%, 63.98%, 7.22%, 11.14%, 27.67%, and 74.81%, respectively. Addition of inoculant had no effect on the quality, nutritional composition, and feeding values of oat silages. Increasing wilting durations linearly increased the pH (P = 0.005) and decreased the smell score (P = 0.028) of ensiled oat. A linear increase was seen in the DM content of ensiled oat after increasing wilting durations (P = 0.001). Oat ensiled without wilting had greater CP content (P = 0.010 and linear P = 0.011) and lower ADF content than those ensiled after 24 or 48 h of wilting (P = 0.013 and linear P = 0.007). Silages subjected to 24 or 48 h of wilting had lower hemicellulose content (P = 0.019 and linear P = 0.012) and digestible DM (P = 0.013 and linear P = 0.007) than those without wilting. In conclusion, inoculant may not affect the quality, composition and feeding values of ensiled oat grown without irrigation whereas, wilting at different durations may negatively affect the pH, smell, CP, ADF, and feeding values of ensiled oats.

Wheat and corn silages are widely used as ruminant feed in Israel due to their availability and cost-effectiveness. To ensure long-term preservation without compromising nutritional quality, effective methods must be employed. The inclusion of additives during harvest and ensiling can enhance efficiency and address preservation challenges. In the current study, the effects of microbial inoculum (MI) and urea on the chemical composition, amino acid profiles, aerobic stability, and in vitro digestibility of wheat and corn silages were investigated. Samples of wheat and corn were subjected to four treatments: control, MI, urea and a combination of MI + urea. The treatments were ensiled in anaerobic conditions and opened after 1, 7, 14 or 28 days. The results showed that additives improved the quality parameters of wheat and corn silages. The inclusion of MI produced the most aerobically stable silages. The inclusion of urea in silages decreased aerobic stability. Additives improved in vitro cell wall carbohydrates' digestibility in both silages and was the best when MI was combined with urea. These results imply that additives could be incorporated in silages to enhance their nutritional value, aerobic stability and digestibility. Nonetheless, increased CP content with additives was not accompanied with a parallel increase in amino acids' content in corn silage.

1. Past studies have shown that fibre-based feed supplements, such as silage, are well accepted by laying hens and can reduce feather pecking and cannibalism. What is uncertain is whether fermentation and moisture characteristics, edibility or particle size influence the hen's choice for a fibre-based feed supplement or if there are more preferred materials.2. The study included three experiments on fermentation and moisture characteristics (Experiment 1), edibility (consumable; Experiment 2) and particle size (Experiment 3) on laying hen preference for different supplements.3. Experiments were conducted in conventional cages, where two cages formed one replication (six replicates per treatment) and each feeding area was subdivided into a trough (basal diet) and a supplement insert (supplements). Since the hens had a free choice between the basal diet and the supplements, feed consumption and the percentage of time hens spent at the supplement insert indicated the strength of preference. The basal diet dry matter (DM) consumption was assessed for all experiments and the supplement and total DM consumption was documented for Experiments 1 and 3. In addition, the percentage of the observed time hens spent at the trough or supplement insert was observed for Experiments 2 and 3.4. There was an increase in the supplement DM consumption for non-fermented and moist supplements (P < 0.05) and, in some cases, a smaller particle size (P < 0.05). Furthermore, hens spent more time with edible (P < 0.05) and small-sized (P < 0.05) supplements. It was concluded that a preferred material in addition to the basal diet could increase the time hens spend at the feeder by up to 1 hour per photoperiod.

Fava bean offers a sustainable home-grown protein source for dairy cows, but fava bean protein is extensively degraded in the rumen and has low Met concentration. We studied the effects of protein supplementation and source on milk production, rumen fermentation, N use, and mammary AA utilization. The treatments were unsupplemented control diet, and isonitrogenously given rapeseed meal (RSM), processed (dehulled, flaked, and heated) fava bean without (TFB) or with rumen-protected (RP) Met (TFB+). All diets consisted of 50% grass silage and 50% cereal-based concentrate including studied protein supplement. The control diet had 15% of crude protein and protein-supplemented diets 18%. Rumen-protected Met in TFB+ corresponded to 15 g/d of Met absorbed in the small intestine. Experimental design was a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square with 3-wk periods. The experiment was conducted using 12 multiparous mid-lactation Nordic Red cows, of which 4 were rumen cannulated. Protein supplementation increased dry matter intake (DMI), and milk (31.9 vs. 30.7 kg/d) and milk component yields. Substituting RSM with TFB or TFB+ decreased DMI and AA intake but increased starch intake. There were no differences in milk yield or composition between RSM diet and TFB diets. Rumen-protected Met did not affect DMI, or milk or milk component yields but increased milk protein concentration in comparison to TFB. There were no differences in rumen fermentation except for increased ammonium-N concentration with the protein-supplemented diets. Nitrogen-use efficiency for milk production was lower for the supplemented diets versus control diet but tended to be greater for TFB and TFB+ versus RSM. Protein supplementation increased plasma essential AA concentration but there were no differences between TFB diets and RSM. Rumen-protected Met clearly increased plasma Met concentration (30.8 vs. 18.2 µmol/L) but did not affect other AA. Absence of differences between RSM and TFB in milk production together with limited effects of RP Met suggest that TFB is a potential alternative protein source for dairy cattle.

Changing climatic conditions are imposing risks and diminishing yields in agriculture. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) silage is a feasible option for backgrounding beef cattle in terms of economic risk management and animal productivity when compared with corn (Zea mays) silage, due to its drought adaptability. Similarly, Brassica carinata meal has proven to be a viable alternative as a protein supplement in forage-based beef cattle systems, when included at 10% of the diet dry matter (DM). However, research is scarce regarding its inclusion in silage-based diets for backgrounding animals. The objective of this trial was to compare a processor-chopped sorghum silage (SS) against a typical corn silage (CS) in a digestibility and performance trial while supplementing two protein sources; one traditionally used like cottonseed meal (CSM) and one novel like B. carinata meal (BCM). A total of 84 Angus crossbred heifers (307 ± 33 kg BW) were evaluated in a randomized block design with a 2 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement with type of silage and protein source as factors. Diets were fed ad libitum, consisting of 89% silage source plus 10% protein source, and 1% mineral inclusion on DM basis. The experimental period consisted of 14 d of adaptation followed by 5 d of apparent total tract digestibility measurements and 56 d of animal performance and intake behavior measurements. Heifers fed SS showed greater number of daily meals but decreased meal sizes (P ≤ 0.05), not differing in meal length (P > 0.10) when compared with CS. Dry matter and organic matter (OM) digestibility showed a silage type × protein source interaction (P ≤ 0.01), where in CS diets, OM tended to be more digestible with CSM vs. BCM, and it did not differ between protein sources in SS based diets. There was an effect of protein (P ≤ 0.01) on ADF digestibility, where CSM was greater than BCM. No effect of treatment was observed (P ≥ 0.10) on DM intake. Average daily gain (ADG) and gain-to-feed ratio were greater for CS than SS (P ≤ 0.01) regardless of protein source. Although heifers fed CS had greater feed efficiency and digestibility, SS can still be considered a viable option for backgrounding beef heifers, obtaining adequate ADG rates of 0.945 kg/d. Lastly, BCM did not differ from CSM in terms of feed efficiency and animal performance, proving to be a viable alternative protein source in silage-based diets.


Increased atmospheric CO2, rising temperatures, and altered patterns of precipitation can limit the production of certain crops commonly used in agriculture, increasing risk, cost, and availability of feedstuffs. The search for alternative plants that could thrive in these changing scenarios is necessary to provide producers with a broader array of options to feed cattle. In this study, sorghum silage was compared with corn silage as the main dietary ingredient, with either Brassica carinata (carinata) or cottonseed meal as the protein source for growing beef heifers. Variables assessed included intake behavior, digestibility, and performance of beef heifers. Heifers fed sorghum silage gained less than heifers fed corn silage, though they grew at an adequate rate for a replacement heifer. Carinata meal showed similar performance results compared with cottonseed meal, despite some of its fiber components being less digestible in the total tract. Therefore, sorghum silage has potential to be a viable feedstuff for growing beef heifers although it may result in decreased performance compared with corn silage. Alternatively, carinata meal can be a practical alternative to cottonseed meal as a protein source in terms of animal performance. This could translate in an increase in the planted area of both sorghum and carinata in Southern United States, as they are adapted to drought and high temperatures, enhancing the resilience of beef production systems in a context of increased climate variability.

Mycotoxins and endocrine disruptors such as phytoestrogens can affect cattle health, reproduction, and productivity. Most studies of mycotoxins in dairy feeds in Mexico and worldwide have been focused on a few (regulated) mycotoxins. In contrast, less known fungal toxins, phytoestrogens, and other metabolites have been neglected and underestimated. This study analyzed a broad spectrum (>800) of mycotoxins, phytoestrogens, and fungal, plant, and unspecific secondary metabolites in whole-plant corn silages (WPCSs) and total mixed rations (TMRs) collected from 19 Mexican dairy farms. A validated multi-metabolite liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometric (LC/ESI-MS/MS) method was used. Our results revealed 125 of >800 tested (potentially toxic) secondary metabolites. WPCSs/TMRs in Mexico presented ubiquitous contamination with mycotoxins, phytoestrogens, and other metabolites. The average number of mycotoxins per TMR was 24, ranging from 9 to 31. Fusarium-derived secondary metabolites showed the highest frequencies, concentrations, and diversity among the detected fungal compounds. The most frequently detected mycotoxins in TMRs were zearalenone (ZEN) (100%), fumonisin B1 (FB1) (84%), and deoxynivalenol (84%). Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and ochratoxin A (OTA), previously reported in Mexico, were not detected. All TMR samples tested positive for phytoestrogens. Among the investigated dietary ingredients, corn stover, sorghum silage, and concentrate proportions were the most correlated with levels of total mycotoxins, fumonisins (Fs), and ergot alkaloids, respectively.

With increasing demand for high-quality pork, development of green and healthy feed for finishing pigs is urgently needed. In this study, the effects and mechanisms of mulberry and paper mulberry silages on growth performance, meat quality, and intestinal health of finishing pigs were explored. Intestinal microbiota were profiled, and microbially produced short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were measured. The average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion rate (FCR) with mulberry and paper mulberry silages were not significantly different from those of the control. Meat quality as measured by pork marbling and fatty acids in the longissimus dorsi was better with mulberry silage. The highest concentration of SCFAs was also with mulberry silage. According to 16S rRNA sequencing, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Terrisporobacter, and Lachnospiraceae, which are important in SCFA production, were biomarkers of mulberry silage. PICRUSt functional analysis of intestinal microbes indicated that galactose metabolism, starch and sucrose metabolism, and carbohydrate digestion and absorption decreased significantly in silage treatments but increased in the control. Correlations between intestinal microbes and SCFAs and fatty acids indicated Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Terrisporobacter, and Lachnospiraceae were closely associated with SCFA and fatty acid contents. The results indicated that mulberry silage could increase SCFA content through shaping intestinal microbes to affect the deposition of fatty acids, which laid a solid theoretical foundation for improving pork quality. IMPORTANCE To avoid competition between people and animals for food, it is essential to develop nontraditional feeds. In this study, the effects of the silages of the unconventional feed resources mulberry and paper mulberry on meat quality of finishing pigs were examined. With mulberry silage in the diet, meat quality improved as indicated by meat color, marbling score, and beneficial fatty acids in the longissimus dorsi muscle. Pigs fed mulberry silage had the highest concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and 16S rRNA sequencing identified Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Terrisporobacter, and Lachnospiraceae as biomarkers, which are important in SCFA production. Functions of intestinal microbes in the two silage groups primarily involved amino acid metabolism and SCFA production. Correlations between intestinal microbes and SCFAs and fatty acids indicated that Clostridium_sensu_stricto-1, Terrisporobacter, and Lachnospiraceae were closely associated with SCFA contents in the intestine and fatty acids in the longissimus dorsi.

Effects of corn silage supplementation on milk production of grazing dairy cows depend in part on the substitution rate between the 2 forages, which may be influenced by grazing management. The aim of this study was to compare 2 grazing management strategies for measuring substitution rate between herbage and corn silage, in interaction with grazing intensity. Six treatments were compared, with 2 grazing intensities and 3 supplementation strategies investigated at both grazing intensities. The 2 grazing intensities were severe and light grazing, defined by either (1) herbage allowance (HA) of 15 (severe) or 30 (light) kg dry matter (DM)/cow per d at 3 cm above ground level or (2) postgrazing sward height, depending on the supplementation strategy. The 3 supplementation strategies were as follows: (U) an unsupplemented treatment, (A) 5 kg DM/d of corn silage offered at a similar HA as in U, and (H) 5 kg DM/d of corn silage offered at a similar postgrazing sward height as in U. Thirty-six multiparous Holstein cows were used in a randomized complete block design and divided in 2 groups for the entire experiment, one for each grazing intensity. Within each grazing intensity group, the corn silage supplementation strategy was studied using a 3 × 3 Greco-Latin square design, with 3 periods of 14 d. Supplementing cows with corn silage increased total DM intake only for severe grazing by 1.7 kg DM/d. The substitution rate between corn silage and grazed herbage was lower for severe than for light grazing, averaging 0.63 and 1.23, respectively. Herbage dry matter intake was lower by 1.2 kg/d for strategy H than A, leading to lower substitution rates (0.81 vs. 0.99, respectively), irrespective of grazing intensity. Milk production increased with silage supplementation for severe grazing (+1.0 kg/d milk) and was unaffected by silage supplementation for light grazing (-0.4 kg/d milk). The milk production response to corn silage supplementation averaged +0.23 and -0.08 kg of milk per kg DM of silage for severe and light grazing, respectively. Fat-corrected milk production tended to be lower by 0.4 kg/d for strategy H than A, leading to lower milk production response (+0.00 vs. +0.12 kg of milk per kg DM of silage, respectively). Milk protein concentration increased with silage supplementation for severe grazing (+1.0 g/kg) but decreased with silage supplementation for light grazing (-0.6 g/kg). Milk fat concentration did not differ among treatments. On average, daily grazing time (-47 min/d, i.e., -9%) and herbage intake rate (-4.9 g of DM/min, i.e., -14%) decreased when cows were supplemented, with greater grazing time reduction at severe than light grazing, and greater herbage intake rate reduction at light than severe grazing. In conclusion, the greater substitution rate and the lower 4% fat-corrected milk production when corn silage was provided at a similar postgrazing sward height rather than at a similar HA to those of unsupplemented cows explain why supplementing grazing dairy cows with conserved forages has no strong effect in practice from a production point of view.

Compared with maize silage- and concentrate-based diets, herbage-based diets were repeatedly shown to favourably influence the milk fatty acid (FA) profile. However, it is unclear how the herbage feeding mode (grazing vs indoor green-feeding) and conservation (fresh herbage vs hay vs silage) modify the milk FA profile. Therefore, the aim of the present experiment was to investigate the effect of different herbage utilisation methods (including herbage feeding mode and herbage conservation method) on the ruminal biohydrogenation of dietary FA and the consequences on the milk FA composition in cows of two breeds (Holstein and Montbéliarde). Concomitant effects of botanical composition and phenological stage of the herbage on milk FA profile were controlled for by harvesting barn-dried hay and silage simultaneously as first cut from the same ryegrass-dominated grassland in a semi-mountainous region. Seven weeks later, the first regrowth of the same plot was used as fresh herbage, either grazed or fed indoor (indoor green-feeding). Twenty-four Montbéliarde and 24 Holstein cows were randomly allocated to four groups of 12 cows balanced by breed, parity, and milk yield. In a free-stall barn, three groups were given ad libitum access to hay, silage, or fresh herbage, respectively. The fourth group was strip-grazing. All cows were supplemented with 3 kg DM/day of the same energy-rich concentrate. After 2 weeks of adaptation to the forage, samples of forage, concentrate, milk, blood, and rumen fluid were collected. Fatty acid composition of forages, rumen fluid, and milk was analysed by gas chromatography. Haymaking reduced total FA content of the herbage, in particular that of linoleic acid (LA) and α-linolenic acid (ALA). Still, rumen fluid lipids of hay-fed cows had the highest proportion of rumenic acid, LA, ALA, and total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Milk fat from hay-fed cows had the highest proportion of LA, and the apparent transfer rates from feed to milk of LA and ALA were higher in hay-fed cows than in silage-fed cows. The proportion of PUFAs was highest in milk fat from grazing and indoor green-fed Montbéliarde cows and lowest in silage-fed cows of both breeds. In conclusion, the herbage utilisation method affects the ruminal biohydrogenation of LA and ALA, whereby herbage drying particularly increases their transfer from herbage to milk.

A study was undertaken to assess the effect of supplementation with sugar beet silage, corn silage, or high-moisture corn on dairy performance, rumen, and plasma metabolites in dairy cows under conditions of restricted grazing in spring. Eighteen multiparous Holstein Friesian cows, stratified for milk yield (39.4 kg/day ± 3.00), days of lactation (67.0 days ± 22.5), live weight (584 kg ± 38.0), and number of calves (5.0 ± 1.5), were allocated in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design. Treatments were as follows: SBS (10 kg DM of permanent pasture, 7 kg DM of sugar beet silage, 4 kg DM of concentrate, 0.3 kg DM of pasture silage, 0.21 kg of mineral supplement); corn silage (10 kg DM of permanent pasture, 7 kg DM of corn silage, 4 kg DM of concentrate, 0.3 kg DM of pasture silage, 0.21 kg of mineral supplement), and HMC (10 kg DM of permanent pasture, 5 kg DM of high-moisture corn, 4.5 kg DM of concentrate, 1.2 kg DM of pasture silage, 0.21 kg of mineral supplement). Pasture was offered rotationally from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Between afternoon and morning milking, the cows were housed receiving a partial mixed ration and water ad libitum. The effect of treatments on milk production, milk composition, body weight, rumen function, and blood parameters were analyzed using a linear−mixed model. Pasture dry matter intake (DMI) was lower in SBS than CS (p < 0.05) and similar to HMC, but total DMI was higher in HMC than SBS (p < 0.05) and similar to CS. Milk production for treatments (32.6, 31.7, and 33.4 kg/cow/day for SBS, CS, and HMC, respectively), live weight, and fat concentration were not modified by treatments, but milk protein concentration was lower for SBS compared with HMC (p < 0.05) and similar to CS. B-hydroxybutyrate, cholesterol, and albumin were not different among treatments (p > 0.05), while urea was higher in SBS, medium in CS silage, and lower in HMC (p < 0.001). Ruminal pH and the total VFA concentrations were not modified by treatments (p > 0.05), which averaged 6.45 and 102.03 mmol/L, respectively. However, an interaction was observed for total VFA concentration between treatment and sampling time (p < 0.05), showing that HMC produced more VFA at 10:00 p.m. compared with the other treatments. To conclude, the supplementation with sugar beet silage allowed a milk response and composition similar to corn silage and HMC, but with a lower concentration of milk protein than HMC. In addition, sugar beet silage can be used as an alternative supplement for high-producing dairy cows with restricted access to grazing during spring.

In this study, ensilaging of herring (Clupea harengus) filleting co-products was taken from lab-scale to pilot scale (1500 L) while monitoring the protein degree of hydrolysis (DH) and lipid oxidation. Subsequently, the possibility of recovering fish oil and protein hydrolysates using batch centrifugation at different g-forces/times was investigated. Around 38% DH was recorded after 2-day pilot-scale ensilaging of herring co-products at ambient temperature (i.e., ~ 22 °C), which was similar to the DH found in lab-scale (40% after 2 days; 22 °C). The lipid oxidation marker 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) reached 20 µmole TBARS/kg silage after 2-day ensilaging. Centrifugation of the silage at 3000-8500 × g for 2-20 min revealed successful separation into fish oil and protein hydrolysates. Heat-treating the silage (85 °C; 30 min) prior to centrifugation resulted in significantly higher oil and hydrolysates recoveries; the same being true for increased g-force. At 8500 × g, the recovery of oil and hydrolysates were 9.7 and 53.0% w/w, respectively, from heat-treated silage, while recoveries were 4.1 and 48.1% w/w, respectively, from non-heat treated silage. At 4500 × g, being a more scalable approach, corresponding numbers were 8.2 and 47.1% (w/w) as well as 2.0 and 40.2% (w/w). The recovered fish oil contained 8% EPA and 11% DHA of total fatty acids. Free fatty acids (FFA), peroxide value (PV), p-anisidine value (p-AV), and total oxidation (TOTOX) values of oils were in the range of 4-7% (FFA), 3.6-3.7 meq/kg oil (PV), 2.5-4.0 (p-AV), and 9.9-11.1 (TOTOX), respectively, which were within the acceptable limits for human consumption specified by the GOED voluntary monograph. The recovered protein hydrolysates contained peptides in the molecular weight range 0.3-6 kDa (~ 37%) and 11-34 kDa (~ 63%). Also, the remaining solids contained 15-17% (w/w) protein, having 44-45% essential amino acids. Overall, the results suggest that herring co-product silage is a valuable source of fish oil and protein hydrolysates, paving the way for ensilaging based-biorefining of herring co-products into multiple products.
