Ceasium-137 and 90Sr are major artificial radionuclides that have been released into the environment. Soil-to-plant transfer of radionuclides is an important route to food contamination. The radionuclide activity concentrations in crops must be quantitatively predicted for estimating the internal radiation doses from food ingestion. In this study, soil and potato samples were collected from three study sites contaminated with different sources of 137Cs and 90Sr: Aomori Prefecture (global fallout) and two accidental release areas (Fukushima Prefecture and the Chornobyl exclusion zone). The 137Cs activity concentrations in the soil and potato samples widely ranged from 1.0 to 250,000 and from 0.048 to 200,000 Bq kg-1 dry weight, respectively. The soil-to-potato transfer factor of 137Cs also ranged widely (0.0015-1.1) and decreased with increasing concentration of exchangeable K. Meanwhile, the activity concentrations of 90Sr in the soil and potato samples were 0.50-64,000 and 0.027-18,000 Bq kg-1 dry weight respectively, and the soil-to-potato transfer factor of 90Sr was 0.023-0.74, decreasing with increasing concentration of exchangeable Ca. The specific activity ratios of 137Cs/Cs and 90Sr/Sr in the exchangeable fraction were similar to those in potatoes, with a factor of 3 in the ±95 % confidence intervals over six orders of magnitude and a factor of 2 in the ±95 % confidence intervals over five orders of magnitude, respectively. According to the data, the accuracy of predicting the activity concentrations of 137Cs and 90Sr in potatoes can be improved by applying the specific activity ratios of 137Cs/Cs and 90Sr/Sr in the exchangeable fraction. This approach accounts for variable factors such as the effects of K and Ca fertilization and soil characteristics. It also emphasizes the benefit of determining the stable Cs and Sr concentrations in potatoes and other crops prior to possible future contamination.

It has been 36 years since the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant catastrophe, but the consumption of wild mushrooms in Ukrainian Polissya is still dangerous since its territory is heavily contaminated by radionuclides. The aim of this study was to estimate 137Cs and 90Sr uptake in wild mushrooms from locations with contrast radioactive loads (Zhytomyr Polissya, Ukraine). In mushroom samples collected from Drevlyanskyi Nature Reserve since 2013 (average levels of soil surface contamination with 137Cs are 555-1480 kBq m-2), the highest levels of 137Cs were observed in symbiotroph species - Imleria badia (≤ 2680 kBq kg-1 dry mass [dm]), Tricholoma equestre (≤ 1420 kBq kg-1 dm), Lactarius rufus (≤ 602 kBq kg-1 dm), Sarcodon imbricatus (≤ 464 kBq kg-1 dm), Leccinum scabrum (≤ 117 kBq kg-1 dm), Suillus bovinus (≤ 118 kBq kg-1 dm), and Boletus edulis (≤ 96 kBq kg-1 dm). 90Sr activity was significantly lower, with the highest levels detected in Russula emetica (193 Bq kg-1 dm), Daedaleopsis confragosa (145 Bq kg-1 dm), and Hypholoma fasciculare (141 Bq kg-1 dm). The 137Cs/90Sr ratio in fruiting bodies in samples ranged from 6.1 (Bovistella utriformis) to 28,979 (T. equestre). Activity concentrations in mushrooms from locations with relatively low contamination with 137Cs (18.5-27.75 kBq m-2) also reached the highest values in symbiotroph species I. badia (7698 Bq kg-1 dm), Lactarius vellereus (6072 Bq kg-1 dm), and S. luteus (1448 Bq kg-1 dm). Potential calculated annual effective doses due to mushroom consumption by adults, considering only the effect of 137Cs, reached 0.311 and 8.71 mSv in B. edulis and I. badia from highly contaminated locations, respectively, and 0.0014 and 0.009 mSv in these species from low contaminated ones.

Uranium speciation and redox behaviour is of critical importance in the nuclear fuel cycle. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) is commonly used to probe the oxidation state and speciation of uranium, and other elements, at the macroscopic and microscopic scale, within nuclear materials. Two-dimensional (2D) speciation maps, derived from microfocus X-ray fluorescence and XANES data, provide essential information on the spatial variation and gradients of the oxidation state of redox active elements such as uranium. In the present work, we elaborate and evaluate approaches to the construction of 2D speciation maps, in an effort to maximize sensitivity to the U oxidation state at the U L3-edge, applied to a suite of synthetic Chernobyl lava specimens. Our analysis shows that calibration of speciation maps can be improved by determination of the normalized X-ray absorption at excitation energies selected to maximize oxidation state contrast. The maps are calibrated to the normalized absorption of U L3 XANES spectra of relevant reference compounds, modelled using a combination of arctangent and pseudo-Voigt functions (to represent the photoelectric absorption and multiple-scattering contributions). We validate this approach by microfocus X-ray diffraction and XANES analysis of points of interest, which afford average U oxidation states in excellent agreement with those estimated from the chemical state maps. This simple and easy-to-implement approach is general and transferrable, and will assist in the future analysis of real lava-like fuel-containing materials to understand their environmental degradation, which is a source of radioactive dust production within the Chernobyl shelter.

RESUMO

The review analyzes the change of the existing paradigm of high radioresistance of the nervous system according tothe results of the study of neuropsychiatric disorders in in the aftermath of the Chornobyl accident in both earlyand remote post-accident period. The participation of the endocannabinoid system in ensuring homeostasis andpathology formation, potential possibilities of using cannabis drugs, agonists and antagonists of endocannabinoidreceptors for the treatment of early and long-term effects of radiation are considered.

Two different digestion methods-microwave digestion (Mw) and Savillex digestion (Sx)-were used to evaluate the best quality control for analysis of the rare earth elements, Th and U in the geochemical certified reference material JSd-2, supplied by the Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ). The analysis of trace elements was carried out using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The digestion recovery was > 90% for almost all elements by both methods. Mw-4 (four repeats of the microwave digestion) was found to be more effective and faster than Sx. In order to evaluate the efficiency of Mw-4, three other GSJ certified reference materials, JLk-1, JB-1 and JB-3, as well as five different soil samples from Belarus, Japan, Serbia and Ukraine were also analyzed. The Mw-4 method was seen to be promising for complete digestion and recovery of most of the elements. The U/Th ratio showed some heterogeneity for Ukraine and Serbia soils affected by Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident and depleted uranium contamination, respectively. This method can be successfully applied to any type of soils for elemental analyses.

The environmental radiation pollution resulting from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 is one of the main factors limiting agriculture in the eastern regions of Belarus. In the first decade after the accident, the need to mitigate the effects of radiation had a key role in the implementation of countermeasures. As a result, there are widespread areas of high soil fertility potential in the contaminated zone. Today there is a possibility to include new crops (e.g. sugar beet [Beta vulgaris L.]) into regular crop rotation to increase the effectiveness of agriculture and to use the accumulated soil fertility potential. The article discusses a possible agronomic approach to estimating specific fields (working plots) at the scale of agricultural enterprises for placement of sugar beet. The territory of the Mahilyow region of the Republic of Belarus was examined from the perspective of soil suitability to the cultivation of sugar beet. Along with estimating radionuclide accumulation by sugar beet roots, the areas of soils suitable for sugar beet within agricultural enterprises were calculated for selected districts. It was revealed that sugar beet has low ability to absorb radiocaesium and radiostrontium from soils. The contamination density does not restrict the possibility for placement of sugar beet. Instead, soil fertility, specifically content of plant-available phosphorus and boron, was the limiting factor in that. Based on data from field experiments and soil fertility data, a number of enterprises were selected where sugar beet could be included into crop rotations to high economic effect.

Airborne gamma spectrometry is an effective tool for prompt monitoring and mapping of large areas contaminated after NPP accident, radionuclides leakage cases, an impact of uranium ore mining and processing, etc. Airborne spectrometry data analysis using deconvolution technique enables to calculate air kerma rates and/or radionuclides concentrations as well as identification of radionuclides. Application of this technique on the airborne data (from manned as well as an unmanned survey using drones) is rather specific due to the requirements for short time of one scan data acquisition, a relatively long distance from the source and small detector size, due to the limited payload of the usually used drones. Application of deconvolution techniques for analysis of spectra with very poor statistics, methods and possibilities to improve the processing of such spectra are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: to identify the psycho-emotional state of children - residents of radioactively contaminated territories and children displaced from the zone of armed conflict in the south-east of Ukraine, and evaluate the effectiveness of art therapy application to correct its disturbances. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The psycho-emotional state was determined in 113 children, of which 57 children from radioactively contaminated territories with 137Cs content in the body from 269 Bq to 7024 Bq (group I) and 56 chil- dren displaced from the zone of military conflict in the Southeast of Ukraine (group II). The age of children ranged from 10 to 17 years. The children were hospitalized to the childrens' clinics of the NRCRM because of functional dis- orders and chronic somatic pathology. The psycho-emotional state of children was evaluated using the «non-exis- tent animal¼ test. It was analyzed for three symptoms - anxiety, aggressiveness and neuropsychiatric exhaustion and was evaluated by scoring points. Correction of the psychoemotional condition was carried out by the method of art therapy in the form of a serial drawing. Psychological testing was performed twice: at admission to the hospital and after the end of the art therapy. RESULTS: The results of the primary examination of the psycho-emotional state of children by the «non-existent ani- mal¼ test showed that in children - residents of radioactively contaminated territories the state of anxiety was reg- istered in all 57 children (100 %), the state of aggression - in 38 children (66.7%); exhaustion - in 37 children (64.9 %). In children who have been displaced from the zone of armed conflict in the south-east of Ukraine, the state of anxiety was also registered in all 56 children (100 %), the status of aggression was determined in 53 chil- dren (94.6 %), and the state of exhaustion - in 44 children (78.6 %). It was established that in children displaced from the combat zone in the Southeast of Ukraine, the quantitative indices of anxiety and aggression states were sig- nificantly higher than in children living in radioactively contaminated territories (p < 0.001), whereas nor by frequen- cy, nor by the degree of severity of exhaustion state they did not clearly differ (p > 0.05). Correlation analysis with the definition of Spearman's criterion did not reveal likely association between the content of 137Cs in the body of children - residents of radioactively contaminated territories and the peculiarities of their psycho-emotional state. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the art therapy method in the form of a serial drawing for children - residents of radioac- tively contaminated territories and children moved from the combat zone in the south-east of Ukraine, led to a sig- nificant positive effect, which was characterized by a decrease in the manifestations of symptoms of anxiety and aggressiveness. The state of exhaustion was less well corrected and its indices only had a tendency to improve. Thus, the method of art therapy in the form of a serial drawing is characterized by efficiency, simplicity of execution, low cost, it can be widely used in children's teams to correct disorders of the psycho-emotional state.

OBJECTIVE: to study the hirudotherapy efficacy in presbyacuzis praecox in clean-up workers (CUWs) of the Chornobyl disaster (ChD) during the post-accident years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From archive data of previously examined 8,136 males' CUWs we selected among them 129 persons with the determined presbyacuzis praecox during the post-accident years. According to the physical dosime- try data the individual radiation of received by CUWs during the work on a rotational scheme in the Chornobyl exclu- sion zone from the end of 1986 to 1992-1994 amounted to 0.21-0.50 Gy. The examinations were carried out using a modern standard set of audiometric, vestibulometric and electrophysiological methods. Two forms of sensory and neural hearing loss in the elderly were distinguished, namely the presbyacuzis and presbyacuzis praecox. Prior to work in the exclusion zone, patients' auditory and vestibular functions were within normal range. Among 129 patients, 68 ones with presbyacuzis praecox were included in two main age groups (aged 40-49 and 50-59 yrs) and were treated using hirudotherapy, taking into consideration their coagulation hemostasis. Other 61 patients of analogical age groups were treated by allopathotherapy. For the analysis of results obtained, techniques of variational statistics were used. RESULTS: Direct correlation (r = 0.71) between inhibitory processes in central areas of the auditory analyzer in pres- byacuzis praecox in CUWs was established by electrophysiology and by speech audiometry data obtained before the treatment. Hyperacusis signs were detected in CUWs of two main and two control groups. Following the use of two treatment schemas, a significant improving of auditory functions was found (p < 0.05) according to tone and speech audiometries. The positive hirudotherapy effect concerning hearing functions was registered in 88% cases (in 59 CUWs among 68 ones); if allopathotherapy had been used, such effect was found in 65% cases (in 45 control patients among 61 ones of control group). The duration of allopathotherapy effect reached 6-9 months comparing to 12-18 months of hiruditherapy one, being twice longer. Improving the patients' coagulation hemostasis, hirudotherapy activated cardiovascular activity favoring the increase of social adequacy in CUWs with presbyacuzis praecox. CONCLUSIONS: It has been shown that hirudotherapy as a kind of naturopathy has significant advantages over alopa- totherapy by the absence of side effects, 23.0% higher and twice as long as improvement of auditory functions. Hirudotherapy, as an effective therapeutic and recreational measures, should be more widely implemented in clini- cal practice in order to minimize the development and progression of diseases in the special population of people who have been exposed to ionizing radiation due to the Chornobyl catastrophe to continue their vitality.

Microbacterium oleivorans A9 is a uranium-tolerant actinobacteria isolated from the trench T22 located near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. This site is contaminated with different radionuclides including uranium. To observe the molecular changes at the proteome level occurring in this strain upon uranyl exposure and understand molecular mechanisms explaining its uranium tolerance, we established its draft genome and used this raw information to perform an in-depth proteogenomics study. High-throughput proteomics were performed on cells exposed or not to 10µM uranyl nitrate sampled at three previously identified phases of uranyl tolerance. We experimentally detected and annotated 1532 proteins and highlighted a total of 591 proteins for which abundances were significantly differing between conditions. Notably, proteins involved in phosphate and iron metabolisms show high dynamics. A large ratio of proteins more abundant upon uranyl stress, are distant from functionally-annotated known proteins, highlighting the lack of fundamental knowledge regarding numerous key molecular players from soil bacteria. BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Microbacterium oleivorans A9 is an interesting environmental model to understand biological processes engaged in tolerance to radionuclides. Using an innovative proteogenomics approach, we explored its molecular mechanisms involved in uranium tolerance. We sequenced its genome, interpreted high-throughput proteomic data against a six-reading frame ORF database deduced from the draft genome, annotated the identified proteins and compared protein abundances from cells exposed or not to uranyl stress after a cascade search. These data show that a complex cellular response to uranium occurs in Microbacterium oleivorans A9, where one third of the experimental proteome is modified. In particular, the uranyl stress perturbed the phosphate and iron metabolic pathways. Furthermore, several transporters have been identified to be specifically associated to uranyl stress, paving the way to the development of biotechnological tools for uranium decontamination.

Objective of the study was to determine the effectiveness of various groups of hepatoprotectors in the treatment of patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) sufferers of the accident at the Chornobyl NPP following the assessment of metabolic changes and control of persistent infections. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 104 males with NASH, who were sufferers of the Chornobyl disaster and underwent examination and treatment in the conditions of the clinics of the National Research Center for Radiation Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. Analysis of the course of the functional state of the liver before and after treatment with hepatoprotectors was carried out using laboratory methods of investiga tion. RESULTS: Hepatoprotectors of different groups used for the treatment of patients affected by the Chornobyl accident with NASH, differed in their effect on various chains in the pathogenesis of disease. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) drugs and preparations of holy thistle normalized the functional state of the liver and disorders of fat metabolism. Treatment with essential phospholipids eliminated cytolytic syndrome with a significant decrease in alanine amino transferase (p < 0.05), but increased alkaline phosphatase (p < 0.001), beta lipoproteins (p < 0.05), triglycerides (p < 0.05), the total cholesterol level remained elevated to (7.0 ± 0.8) mmol/L. Amino acid (AA) preparations normal ized the level of aminotransferases, eliminated the symptoms of cholestasis with a significant decrease in bilirubin (p < 0.001) and alkaline phosphatase (p < 0.001), positively influenced on fat and carbohydrate metabolism decreasing levels of beta lipoproteins (p < 0.05), triglycerides and glucose. Treatment with hepatoprotectors posi tively influenced on the state of antioxidant protection (AOP) - decreased before treatment in 56.5 % of patients, after treatment it reduced to 28.6 % (p < 0.05), the number of patients with elevated lipid peroxidation indices decreased from 39.1 % to 21.4 %. Titres of antibodies to persistent herpes virus infections, elevated before treat ment, under the influence of hepatoprotectors did not decrease to reference values. CONCLUSION: The most effective were drugs on the basis of AA, when applied they normalized the functional state of the, fat and carbohydrate metabolism, decreased lipoperoxidation and improved AOP state. Effect of drugs AA and UDCA on the level of antibodies to herpesvirus infection requires further study.

OBJECTIVE: Estimation of the parathyroid hyperplasia prevalence after the ChNPP accident in adults exposed to ion izing radiation and their descendants using the diagnostic ultrasound and its methodology elaboration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pilot prospective study of the prevalence of parathyroid hyperplasia among the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) accident adult survivors (n=686) and their descendants (54 children) was performed using diagnostic ultrasound examination of thyroid and parathyroids. Among the study subjects there were 339 ChNPP accident clean up workers (ACUW), 32 persons were evacuated from the 30 km exclusion zone and 224 ones were included to the control group. Diagnostic ultrasound of thyroid and parathyroids was performed according to the standard method. Additionally, in children with parathyroid hyperplasia an additional assay of 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels in serum was performed. In calculating the statistical significance, its level p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Parathyroids are a few small but critically important endocrine glands that synthesize parathyroid hormone, regulating mainly phosphoric calcium metabolism. Insufficient (hypoparathyroidism) or excessive (hyperparathy roidism) function of parathyroids is harmful to the patients affecting the state of nervous and cardiovascular sys tem. Parathyroidss can accumulate isotopes of cesium, strontium and radioactive iodine. The available data testify to an increased incidence of clinically significant hyperplasia of parthyroids (more than 9 mm in adults and more than 5 mm in children) among persons exposed toionizng radiation as a result of the accident at the ChNPP (28.64%) and their descendants (23.8-70.6%). First of all are concerned those adults who live in contaminated areas in comparison with the control group (24.15% in not irradiated). Evacuees from the 30 km exclusion zone being the category of people who were exposed to the absorbed iodine isotopes in the first days of the Chernobyl accident are the another risk group. These data demonstrate sensitivity of parathyroidss to the impact of incorpo rated isotopes (iodine, cesium and strontium), which in the long term exposure create conditions for structural and functional changes in regulation of phosphorous calcium metabolism being the basis for a significant prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis in irradiated individuals and their descendants. A number of further studies are required to clarify the findings and to disclose the hormonal mechanisms of radiation effects on parathyroids. CONCLUSIONS: Parathyroid glands are radiosensitive and susceptible to effects of strontium, cesium and iodine iso topes, which cause parathyroid irradiation and subsequent structural and functional changes, being a prerequisite for development of osteopenia and osteoporosis in the ChNPP accident survivors and their descendants. High inci dence of parathyroid hypertrophy is found in the inhabitants of the radiation contaminated territories (long term irradiation by cesium isotopes), as well as in evacuated from the 30 km exclusion zone (irradiation by iodine iso topes in the early days of the accident).

BACKGROUND: On 26th April, 1986 the greatest accident of nuclear plant in Czernobyl occured and isotopes with high percentage of release were erupted: 33-Xe, 131-I, 132-Te, 134-Cs and 137-Cs. The radioactivity of the isotopes was very high - for instance: 33-Xe 6500 PBq, 131-I 1760 PBq. Rest of the 15 isotopes represented similar radioactivity with shorter percentage of release. The most exposed group of people were 237 liquidators, and 11600 people living around had to be evacuated when the limit dose for a person (5mSv) was crossed. Ionizing radiation on the molecular level produces high energy radicals, water radiolysis and ionization of the atoms leading to damage of the enzymes activity centers and receptors, cell membranes DNA, intracellular lysosomes, and especially important for ATP synthesis - mitochondria. These destructions lead to tissue and organs damage. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is the presentation of the protective property of iodine application in the case of nuclear accident. METHODS: In Poland at that time, effective iodine prophylaxis did not exist. In the face of such exposition, a special Governement Commission was appointed. When permissioned maximal dose for children and adolescents 50mSv appeared in some areas of the country, the Commission made a decision about obligatory administration of a single pharmacological dose of potassium iodide for all children and adolescents till age 16. No relevant recent patents were available for this WHO report. RESULTS: In this way, the dose of 131-I to thyroid for inhabitants in high, moderated, and low contaminated regions were reduced by about 45%. However, from 1987 to 1997 increase in prevalence of the differentiated thyroid cancer in adults in Polish population especially in women over 40 years old in the southern part of Poland was observed. CONCLUSION: Actually in European countries work 185 nuclear power plants and to 2045 another 100 is planned. In 1999, WHO issued recommendations on iodine prophylaxis in the case of nuclear accident.

BACKGROUND: Investigations soon after the 1986 Chornobyl (Chernobyl in Russian) accident of exposed populations residing elsewhere in Europe led government and international agencies to conclude that exposures to cesium-137 (Cs-137) were not teratogenic. Our observations of elevated population rates of neural tube defects (NTDs) and microcephaly and microphthalmia (M/M) in the Rivne Province in Ukraine, which were among the highest in Europe, prompted this follow-up investigation inclusive of whole-body counts (WBCs) of Cs-137 among ambulatory patients and pregnant women residing in Polissia, the most polluted region in Rivne. METHODS: Yearly (2000-2012) population rates of NTDs and M/M and WBC patterns of ambulatory patients (2001-2010) and pregnant women (2011-2013) in Polissia and non-Polissia regions of Rivne were analyzed. RESULTS: The NTD and M/M population rates in Rivne remain elevated and are statistically significantly higher in Polissia than in non-Polissia. The WBCs among residents in Polissia are statistically significantly higher than among those from non-Polissia. CONCLUSION: NTD and M/M rates are highest in the Polissia region of Rivne and are among the highest in Europe. In Polissia, the WBCs of Cs-137 are above officially set permissible upper limits. The results are based on aggregate data of NTDs and M/Ms and average WBC values. Further investigations of causality of the high rates of NTDs and M/Ms are needed and urgent strengthening policies and implementations to reduce exposures to teratogens, in particular radioactive nuclides and alcohol, and consumption of folic acid supplements are indicated.

AIM: Growing interest in lectins is based on their diagnostic and pharmacological potential, especially the ability to inhibit proliferation and initiate apoptosis of cancer cells. In our research microplate lectinoassay able to detect carbohydrate containing structures (receptors) on erythrocyte surface have been proposed for Chornobyl cleanup workers (1986) monitoring. It was expected to reveal specific abnormalities associated with pathological condition arising as a result of late radiation effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Red blood cell (RBC) specimens were taken from 171 persons distributed into the six cohorts: nonexposed donors (1); chronically exposed to the doses below (2) and over 50 cGy (3); exposed to acute radiation without (4) and with manifestation of acute radiation syndrome (5 and 6). Lectins from 24 species of medicinal plants were purified by ethanol fractionation and electrofocusing. Intensity of lectin-receptor interactions was determined in reaction of hemagglutination. Method of flow cytofluorometry was used to study B-cell counts. Hormone levels in blood serum were determined by radioimmunoassay. RESULTS: An elevated ability of RBC to interact with the panel of lectins was found in all cohorts of exposed persons versus nonexposed donors, moreover, changes in the intensity of lectin-receptor binding depended on the dose of irradiation. Diagnostic value of specific RBC reactions with some individual lectins has been elucidated. Elevated intensity of RBC reaction with Zea mays lectin was accompanied by a decrease in serum content of thyroid hormones T4 and T3, as well as reduction of B-cell counts. In the case of Rubus caesius lectin the more intensive reaction with RBC, the higher level of hormone cortisol was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Deviations from donor's norm in intensity of lectin - RBC interactions in radiation exposed men are supposed to carry information about negative changes in their health status following Chornobyl catastrophe and show the diagnostic potential. The most sensitive reactions have been associated primarily with shifts in endocrine and immune systems. BACKGROUND: Occupational and environmental exposure to chemicals such as benzene has been linked to increased risk of leukemia. Cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption have also been found to affect leukemia risk. Previous analyses in a large cohort of Chornobyl clean-up workers in Ukraine found significant radiation-related increased risk for all leukemia types. We investigated the potential for additional effects of occupational and lifestyle factors on leukemia risk in this radiation-exposed cohort. METHODS: In a case-control study of chronic lymphocytic and other leukemias among Chornobyl cleanup workers, we collected data on a range of non-radiation exposures. We evaluated these and other potential risk factors in analyses adjusting for estimated bone marrow radiation dose. We calculated Odds Ratios and 95% Confidence Intervals in relation to lifestyle factors and occupational hazards. RESULTS: After adjusting for radiation, we found no clear association of leukemia risk with smoking or alcohol but identified a two-fold elevated risk for non-CLL leukemia with occupational exposure to petroleum (OR=2.28; 95% Confidence Interval 1.13, 6.79). Risks were particularly high for myeloid leukemias. No associations with risk factors other than radiation were found for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. CONCLUSIONS: These data - the first from a working population in Ukraine - add to evidence from several previous reports of excess leukemia morbidity in groups exposed environmentally or occupationally to petroleum or its products.

The speciation of U and Pu in soil and concrete from Rocky Flats and in particles from soils from Chernobyl, Hanford, Los Alamos, and McGuire Air Force Base and bottom sediments from Mayak was determined by a combination of X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) element maps. These experiments identify four types of speciation that sometimes may and other times do not exhibit an association with the source terms and histories of these samples: relatively well ordered PuO2+x and UO2+x that had equilibrated with O2 and H2O under both ambient conditions and in fires or explosions; instances of small, isolated particles of U as UO2+x, U3O8, and U(VI) species coexisting in close proximity after decades in the environment; alteration phases of uranyl with other elements including ones that would not have come from soils; and mononuclear Pu-O species and novel PuO2+x-type compounds incorporating additional elements that may have occurred because the Pu was exposed to extreme chemical conditions such as acidic solutions released directly into soil or concrete. Our results therefore directly demonstrate instances of novel complexity in the Å and µm-scale chemical speciation and reactivity of U and Pu in their initial formation and after environmental exposure as well as occasions of unexpected behavior in the reaction pathways over short geological but significant sociological times. They also show that incorporating the actual disposal and site conditions and resultant novel materials such as those reported here may be necessary to develop the most accurate predictive models for Pu and U in the environment.

Although uranium (U) is naturally found in the environment, soil remediation programs will become increasingly important in light of certain human activities. This work aimed to identify U(VI) detoxification mechanisms employed by a bacteria strain isolated from a Chernobyl soil sample, and to distinguish its active from passive mechanisms of interaction. The ability of the Microbacterium sp. A9 strain to remove U(VI) from aqueous solutions at 4 °C and 25 °C was evaluated, as well as its survival capacity upon U(VI) exposure. The subcellular localisation of U was determined by TEM/EDX microscopy, while functional groups involved in the interaction with U were further evaluated by FTIR; finally, the speciation of U was analysed by TRLFS. We have revealed, for the first time, an active mechanism promoting metal efflux from the cells, during the early steps following U(VI) exposure at 25 °C. The Microbacterium sp. A9 strain also stores U intracellularly, as needle-like structures that have been identified as an autunite group mineral. Taken together, our results demonstrate that this strain exhibits a high U(VI) tolerance based on multiple detoxification mechanisms. These findings support the potential role of the genus Microbacterium in the remediation of aqueous environments contaminated with U(VI) under aerobic conditions.

Long-term management of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) commonly includes TSH-suppressive therapy with L-T4 and, in case of postsurgical hypoparathyroidism, Calcium-D3 supplementation, both of which may affect skeletal health. Experience with female patients treated for DTC at a young age and who were then receiving long-term therapy with L-T4 and Calcium-D3 medication is very limited to date. This cross-sectional study set out to investigate effects of Calcium-D3 supplementation and TSH-suppressive therapy on bone mineral density (BMD) in 124 young female patients treated for DTC at a mean age of 14 years and followed-up for an average of 10 years. BMD was found to be significantly higher in patients receiving Calcium-D3 medication than in patients not taking supplements. The level of ionized calcium was the strongest factor determining lumbar spine BMD in patients not receiving Calcium-D3 supplementation. Pregnancy ending in childbirth and HDL-cholesterol were associated with a weak adverse effect on spine and femoral BMD. No evidence of adverse effects of L-T4 and of radioiodine therapies on BMD was found. We conclude that Calcium-D3 medication has a beneficial effect on BMD, and that TSH-suppressive therapy does not affect BMD in women treated for DTC at young age, at least after 10 years of follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma (MPTC) has been reported in literature in 18-87 % of cases. This paper aims to review controversies in the molecular pathogenesis, prognosis, and management of MPTC. METHODS: A review of English-language literature focusing on MPTC was carried out, and analyzed in an evidence-based perspective. Results were discussed at the 2013 Workshop of the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons devoted to surgery of thyroid carcinoma. RESULTS: Literature reports no prospective randomized studies; thus, a relatively low level of evidence may be achieved. CONCLUSIONS: MPTC could be the result of either true multicentricity or intrathyroidal metastasis from a single malignant focus. Radiation and familial nonmedullary thyroid carcinoma are conditions at risk of MPTC development. The prognostic importance of multifocal tumor growth in PTC remains controversial. Prognosis might be impaired in clinical MPTC but less or none in MPTC <1 cm. MPTC can be diagnosed preoperatively by FNAB and US, with low sensitivity for MPTC <1 cm. Total or near-total thyroidectomy is indicated to reduce the risk of local recurrence. Prophylactic central node dissection should be considered in patients with total tumor diameter >1 cm, or in cases with high number of cancer foci. Completion thyroidectomy might be necessary when MPTC is diagnosed after less than near-total thyroidectomy. Radioactive iodine ablation should be considered in selected patients with MPTC at increased risk of recurrence or metastatic spread.
