RESUMO

The aim of this work was to synthesize a green nanoparticle SnCuO@FeO nanocomposite core-shell to break oily water emulsions during petroleum-enhancing production processes as an alternative to chemical and physical processes. In this study, eight bacterial isolates (MHB1-MHB8) have been isolated from tree leaves, giant reeds, and soil samples. The investigation involved testing bacterial isolates for their ability to make FeO nanoparticles and choosing the best producers. The selected isolate (MHB5) was identified by amplification and sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene as Bacillus paramycoides strain OQ878685. MHB5 produced the FeO nanoparticles with the smallest particle size (78.7 nm) using DLS. XRD, FTIR, and TEM were used to characterize the biosynthesized nanoparticles. The jar experiment used SnCuO@FeO with different ratios of Sn to CuO (1:1, 2:1, and 3:1) to study the effect of oil concentration, retention time, and temperature. The most effective performance was observed with a 1:1 ratio of Sn to CuO, achieving an 85% separation efficiency at a concentration of 5 mg/L, for a duration of 5 min, and at a temperature of 373 K. Analysis using kinetic models indicates that the adsorption process can be accurately described by both the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. This suggests that the adsorption mechanism likely involves a combination of film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion. Regarding the adsorption isotherm, the Langmuir model provides a strong fit for the data, while the D-R model indicates that physical interactions primarily govern the adsorption mechanism. Thermodynamic analysis reveals a ∆H value of 18.62 kJ/mol, indicating an exothermic adsorption process. This suggests that the adsorption is a favorable process, as energy is released during the process. Finally, the synthesized green SnCuO@FeO nanocomposite has potential for use in advanced applications in the oil and gas industry to help the industry meet regulatory compliance, lower operation costs, reduce environmental impact, and enhance production efficiency.

RESUMO

The production of sludge-based biochar to recover phosphorus (P) from wastewater and reuse the recovered phosphorus as agricultural fertilizer is a preferred process. This article mainly studied the removal of phosphate (PO4-P) from aqueous solution by synthesizing sludge-based biochar (MgSBC-0.1) from anaerobic fermentation sludge treated with magnesium (Mg)-loading-modification, and compared it with unmodified sludge-based biochar (SBC). The physicochemical properties, adsorption efficiency, and adsorption mechanism of MgSBC-0.1 were studied. The results showed that the surface area of MgSBC-0.1 synthesized increased by 5.57 times. The material surface contained MgO, Mg(OH)2, and CaO nanoparticles. MgSBC-0.1 can effectively remove phosphate in the initial solution pH range of 3.00-7.00, with a fitted maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity of 379.52 mg·g-1. The adsorption conforms to the pseudo second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm adsorption curve. The characterization of the adsorbed composite material revealed the contribution of phosphorus crystal deposition and electrostatic attraction to phosphorus absorption.

RESUMO

This study aims to reveal the effects of maltodextrin(MD) on the water adsorption and thermodynamic properties of Codonopsis Radix(DS) spray-dried powder by determining the moisture and energy changes of the powder in the process of moisture absorption. The static weighing method was used to obtain the isothermal water adsorption data of the spray-dried powder in 6 saturated salt solutions(KAc, MgCl_2·6H_2O, K_2CO_3, NaBr, NaCl, and KCl) at 3 temperatures(25, 35, and 45 ℃). Six models were used for fitting of the water adsorption process, and the most suitable model was selected based on the model performance. Furthermore, the corresponding net equivalent adsorption heat and differential entropy were calculated, and the adsorption entropy change was integrated. The linear relationship between net equivalent adsorption heat and differential entropy was drawn based on the entropy-enthalpy complementarity theory. The results showed that the water adsorption properties of DS and DS-MD spray-dried powder followed the type Ⅲ isotherm and was well fitted by the GAB model. The monolayer water content M_0 decreased with the increase in temperature. At the same temperature, the M_0 of DS spray-dried powder decreased after the addition of MD. The net equivalent adsorption heat and differential entropy of DS and DS-MD spray-dried powder decreased with the increase in water content, which presented a linear relationship. The addition of MD decreased the water activity corresponding to the lowest integral adsorption entropy of the powder, and the system became more stable. The results indicated that the spray-dried powder became more stable after the addition of MD.

RESUMO

Heavy metals are one of the most damaging environmental toxins that hamper growth of plants. These noxious chemicals include lead (Pb), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr). Chromium is one of the toxic metal which induces various oxidative processes in plants. The emerging role of nanoparticles as pesticides, fertilizers and growth regulators have attracted the attention of various scientists. Current study was conducted to explore the potential of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) alone and in combination with plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Klebsiella sp. SBP-8 in Cr stress alleviation in Brassica juncea (L.). Chromium stress reduced shoot fresh weight (40%), root fresh weight (28%), shoot dry weight (28%) and root dry weight (34%) in B. juncea seedlings. Chromium stressed B. juncea plants showed enhanced levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), electrolyte leakage (EL), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide ion (O2• -). However, co-supplementation of ZnONPs and Klebsiella sp. SBP-8 escalated the activity of antioxidant enzymes i.e., superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in B. juncea grown in normal and Cr-toxic soil. It is further proposed that combined treatment of ZnONPs and Klebsiella sp. SBP-8 may be useful for alleviation of other abiotic stresses in plants.

RESUMO

Antimony contamination from textile industries has been a global environmental concern and the existing treatment technologies could not reduce Sb(V) to meet the discharge standards. To overcome this shortcoming, ferric flocs were introduced to expedite the biological process for enhanced Sb(V) removal in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). For this purpose, a series of laboratorial-scale sequential batch reactor activated sludge processes (SBRs) were applied for Sb(V) removal with varied reactor conditions and the transformation of Fe and Sb in SBR system was investigated. Results showed a significant improvement in Sb(V) removal and the 20 mg L-1 d-1 iron ions dosage and iron loss rate was found to be only 15.2%. The influent Sb(V) concentration ranging 153-612 µg L-1 was reduced to below 50 µg L-1, and the maximum Sb(V) removal rate of the enhanced system reached about 94.3%. Furthermore, it exhibited high stability of Sb(V) removal in the face of antimonate load, Fe strike and matrix change of wastewater. Sludge total Sb determination and capacity calculation revealed decreasing in Sb adsorption capacity and desorption without fresh Fe dosage. While sludge morphology analysis demonstrated the aging and crystallization of iron hydroxides. These results verify the distinct effects of fresh iron addition and iron aging on Sb(V) removal. High-throughput gene pyrosequencing results showed that the iron addition changed microbial mechanisms and effect Fe oxidized bacterial quantity, indicating Sb(V) immobilization achieved by microbial synergistic iron oxidation. The present study successfully established a simple and efficient method for Sb(V) removal during biological treatment, and the modification of biological process by iron supplement could provide insights for real textile wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Shikimic acid (SA) is one of the most effective drugs against the A (H1N1) virus and has high medicinal value. Additionally, it has the ability to generate non-toxic herbicides and antimicrobial medications. The extraction from plants has proven to be the main route of production of SA with economic benefits and environmental efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to perform purification of SA from these herbal medicines before quantifying it. In this study, researchers employed a boronate affinity-based controlled oriented surface imprinting technique to produce molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as highly effective solid phase extraction (SPE) adsorbents for the isolation and purification of SA. 3-Fluoro-4-formylphenylboronic acid functionalized silica nanoparticles were used as supporting materials for immobilizing SA. Poly(2-anilinoethanol) with a higher hydrophilic domain can be used as an effective imprinting coating. The prepared SA-imprinted silica nanoparticles exhibited several significant results, such as good specificity, high binding capacity (39.06 ± 2.24 mg g-1), moderate binding constant (6.61 × 10-4 M-1), fast kinetics (8 min) and low binding pH (pH 5.0) toward SA. The replication of SA-imprinted silica nanoparticles was deemed satisfactory. The SA-imprinted silica nanoparticles could be still reused after seven adsorption-desorption cycles, which indicated high chemical stability. In addition, the recoveries of the proposed method for SA at three spiked level analysis in star aniseed and meadow cranesbill were 96.2% to 109.0% and 91.6% to 103.5%, respectively. The SA-imprinted silica nanoparticles that have been prepared are capable of identifying the target SA in real herbal medicines. Our approach makes sample pre-preparation simple, fast, selective and efficient.

RESUMO

Efficient enrichment of trace zearalenone (ZEN) from the complex traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) samples is quite difficult, but of great significance for TCM quality control. Herein, we reported a novel magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) strategy for ZEN enrichment using the amino- and hydroxyl dual-functionalized magnetic microporous organic network (Fe3O4@MON-NH2-OH) as an advanced adsorbent combined with the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination. Efficient extraction of ZEN was achieved via the possible hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic, and π-π interactions between Fe3O4@MON-NH2-OH and ZEN. The adsorption capacity of Fe3O4@MON-NH2-OH for ZEN was 215.0 mg g-1 at the room temperature, which was much higher than most of the reported adsorbents. Under the optimal condition, the developed Fe3O4@MON-NH2-OH-MSPE-HPLC method exhibited wide linear range (5-2500 µg L-1), low limits of detection (1.4-35 µg L-1), less adsorbent consumption (5 mg), and large enhancement factor (95) for ZEN. The proposed method was successfully applied to detect trace ZEN from 10 kinds of real TCM samples. Conclusively, this work demonstrates the Fe3O4@MON-NH2-OH can effectively extract trace ZEN from the complex TCM matrices, which may open up a new way for the application of MONs in the enrichment and extraction of trace contaminants or active constituents from the complex TCM samples.

RESUMO

Guided by efficient utilization of natural plant oil and sulfur as low-cost sorbents, it is desired to tailor the porosity and composition of polysulfides to achieve their optimal applications in the management of aquatic heavy metal pollution. In this study, polysulfides derived from soybean oil and sulfur (PSSs) with improved porosity (10.2-22.9 m2/g) and surface oxygen content (3.1-7.0 wt.%) were prepared with respect to reaction time of 60 min, reaction temperature of 170 °C, and mass ratios of sulfur/soybean oil/NaCl/sodium citrate of 1:1:3:2. The sorption behaviors of PSSs under various hydrochemical conditions such as contact time, pH, ionic strength, coexisting cations and anions, temperature were systematically investigated. PSSs presented a fast sorption kinetic (5.0 h) and obviously improved maximum sorption capacities for Pb(II) (180.5 mg/g), Cu(II) (49.4 mg/g), and Cr(III) (37.0 mg/g) at pH 5.0 and T 298 K, in comparison with polymers made without NaCl/sodium citrate. This study provided a valuable reference for the facile preparation of functional polysulfides as well as a meaningful option for the removal of aquatic heavy metals.

RESUMO

The effects of boiling water treatment on the physical properties of Quercus variabilis virgin cork (Qv VC) were examined and compared with those of Quercus suber reproduction cork (Qs RC). The water treatment was conducted at 100 °C for 1 h. Qv VC showed a significantly higher dimensional change in the three directions and lower weight loss than Qs RC by boiling water treatment. Untreated and boiled Qv VC showed higher density, air-dried moisture content, red/green (a*) and yellow/blue (b*) chromaticity, overall color change, shrinkage in all three directions, moisture adsorption on the entire surface, and swelling per 1% moisture content than untreated and boiled Qs RC. However, the lightness (L*) and water absorption on each surface were higher for Qs RC than for Qv VC. Moisture adsorption on each surface was comparable before and after heat treatment for both species. After boiling water treatment, the air-dried moisture content, dimensions, volume shrinkage, water absorption, and moisture adsorption on each surface and the entire surface increased, whereas L*, a*, b*, and swelling per 1% moisture content decreased. The results of the present study could be useful for further utilization of Qv cork growing in Korea.

RESUMO

In this study, rooibos tea waste (RTW) incorporated with a binary oxide (BO; Fe2O3-SnO2) has been reported for the first time as a highly efficient adsorbent material for the elimination of Ni(II) ions. The as-synthesised rooibos tea waste-binary oxide (RWBO) composite adsorbent was characterised using miscellaneous techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX, TGA, BET, and XPS. The RWBO was then tested for the removal of Ni(II) in a batch adsorption experiment. The composite adsorbent showed a great removal efficiency of about 99.75% for Ni(II) ions at 45 °C, 180 min agitation time, pH 7, and dosage of 250 mg. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic and spontaneous. Also, the spent adsorbent [RWBO-Ni(II)] was found to be solar light active with a narrow band gap of 1.4 eV. It was further used as a photocatalyst for the photocatalytic abatement of 10 mg/L ciprofloxacin with an extent of degradation of 83% obtained after 150 min. In addition, the extent of mineralisation of the ciprofloxacin by the spent adsorbent as obtained from the TOC data was found to be 64%. Overall, the RWBO composite adsorbent lends itself as an efficient, eco-friendly and promising material for environmental remediation.

RESUMO

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in plant pigments as readily available nutraceuticals. Photosynthetic pigments, specifically chlorophylls and carotenoids, renowned for their non-toxic antioxidant properties, are increasingly finding applications beyond their health-promoting attributes. Consequently, there is an ongoing need for cost-effective methods of isolation. This study employs a co-precipitation method to synthesize magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) confirms that an aqueous environment and oxidizing conditions yield nanosized iron oxide with particle sizes ranging from 80 to 140 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra indicate the presence of hydrous iron oxide FeO(OH) on the surface of the nanosized iron oxide. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of obtained nanomaterial was 151.4 m2 g-1, with total pore volumes of pores 0.25 cm3 g-1 STP. The material, designated as iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), serves as an adsorbent for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) and isolation of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, lutein) from extracts of higher green plants (Mentha piperita L., Urtica dioica L.). Sorption of chlorophyll a onto the nanoparticles is confirmed using UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy (FT-IR/PAS), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Selective sorption of chlorophyll a requires a minimum of 3 g of IONPs per 12 mg of chlorophyll a, with acetone as the solvent, and is dependent on a storage time of 48 h. Extended contact time of IONPs with the acetone extract, i.e., 72 h, ensures the elimination of remaining components except lutein, with a spectral purity of 98%, recovered with over 90% efficiency. The mechanism of chlorophyll removal using IONPs relies on the interaction of the pigment's carbonyl (C=O) groups with the adsorbent surface hydroxyl (-OH) groups. Based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, it has been proven that the selective adsorption of pigments is also influenced by more favorable dispersion interactions between acetone and chlorophyll in comparison with other solutes. An aqueous environment significantly promotes the removal of pigments; however, it results in a complete loss of selectivity.

RESUMO

In this study, a bacterial strain Chryseobacterium bernardetii WK-3 was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of a uranium tailings in Southern China. It can efficiently adsorb hexavalent uranium with an adsorption ratio of 92.3%. The influence of different environmental conditions on the adsorption ratio of Chryseobacterium bernardetii strain WK-3 was investigated, and the adsorption mechanism was preliminarily discussed by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The results showed that the optimal adsorption conditions for U(VI) by Chryseobacterium bernardetii strain WK-3 were pH = 5, temperature 30 ℃, NaCl concentration 1%, and inoculation volume 10%. When the initial concentration of U was 50 ~ 150 mg/L, the adsorption capacity of Chryseobacterium bernardetii strain WK-3 to U(VI) reached the maximum and maintained the equilibrium at 44 h. SEM-EDS results showed that phosphorus in cells participates in the interaction of uranyl ions, which may indicate that phosphate was produced during cell metabolism and was further combined to form U(VI)-phosphate minerals. In summary, Chryseobacterium bernardetii strain WK-3 would be a promising alternative for environmental uranium contamination remediation.

RESUMO

In this paper, we prepared three types of porous glasses (PGs) with specific surface areas of 311.60 m2/g, 277.60 m2/g, and 231.38 m2/g, respectively, via borosilicate glass phase separation. These glasses were further modified with amidoxime groups (AO) using the hydroxylamine method, yielding adsorbents named 1.5-PG-AO, 2-PG-AO, and 3-PG-AO. The adsorption performance of these adsorbents under various conditions was investigated, including sorption kinetics and adsorption mechanisms. The results reveal that the number of micropores and specific surface area of PG are significantly reduced after AO modification. All three adsorbents exhibit similar adsorption capabilities. Particularly, pH has a pronounced effect on U (VI) adsorption of PG-AO, with a maximum value at pH = 4.5. Equilibrium adsorption is achieved within 2 h, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 129 mg/g. Notably, a uranium removal rate of 99.94% is attained. Furthermore, the adsorbents show high selectivity in uranium solutions containing Na+ or K+. Moreover, the adsorbents demonstrate exceptional regeneration ability, with the removal rate remaining above 80% even after undergoing five adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorption reaction of uranium on PG-AO involves a combination of multiple processes, with monolayer chemisorption being the dominant mechanism. Both the complex adsorption of AO and the ion exchange and physical adsorption of PG contribute to the adsorption of uranyl ions on the PG-AO adsorbents.

RESUMO

Since the electroplating industry is springing up, effective control of phosphate has attracted global concerns. In this study, a novel biosorbent (MIL-88@CS-HDG) was synthesized by loading a kind of Fe-based metal organic framework called MIL-88 into chitosan hydrogel beads and applied in deep treatment of phosphate removal in electroplating wastewater. The adsorption capacities of H2PO4- on MIL-88@CS-HDG could reach 1.1 mmol/g (corresponding to 34.1 mg P/g and 106.7 mg H2PO4-/g), which was 2.65% higher than that on single MOF powders and chitosan hydrogel beads. The H2PO4- adsorption was well described by the Freundlich isotherm model. Over 90% H2PO4- could be adsorbed at contact time of 3 h. It could keep high adsorption capacity in the pH range from 2 to 7, which had a wider pH range of application compared with pure MIL-88. Only NO3- and SO42- limited the adsorption with the reduction rate of 11.42% and 23.23%, proving it tolerated most common co-existing ions. More than 92% of phosphorus could be recovered using NaOH and NaNO3. Electrostatic attraction between Fe core and phosphorus in MIL-88@CS-HDG and ion exchange played the dominant role. The recovered MIL-88@CS-HDG remained stable and applicable in the treatment process of real electroplating wastewater even after six adsorption-regeneration cycles. Based on the removal properties and superb regenerability, MIL-88@CS-HDG is potentially applicable to practical production.

RESUMO

The urgent concerns of controlling water body eutrophication and the alleviating phosphorus shortage have led to an urgent need for action. The removal of phosphate from polluted waters and its reuse are essential for the prevention of eutrophication and for the sustainable utilization of phosphate resources. In this study, modified attapulgite with different Ca:Mg molar ratios was synthesized to facilitate the recovery of phosphate, with subsequent use of soil fertilizer. Ca-Mg modified attapulgite with the optimal ratio (ACM-5:3) exhibited an exceptional adsorption quality, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 63.2 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model could well describe the adsorption kinetics and isotherms, respectively. The adsorption mechanism analyses suggested that the interaction between ACM-5:3 and phosphate depended mainly on ion exchange and electrostatic attraction. Moreover, phosphate-laden-ACM-5:3 demonstrated a significant potential as a phosphorus-releasing fertilizer. It could promote corn growth by ensuring a continuous supply of phosphorus and minimizing phosphorus runoff losses. The above results suggested that ACM-5:3 was a potential adsorbent for efficient phosphate removal and recovery.

RESUMO

An innovative and simple nanocomposite denoted as MHNTs@PEI was synthesized for gallic acid (GA) analytical sample pretreatment. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized was binded onto magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs) to inhence adsorption capacity. MHNTs@PEI was obtained only through two steps modification (amination and PEI modification). Characterizations showed that there are layers of synthetic PEI on the tubular structure of the material and magnetic spheres on its surface, both indicating successful synthesis of the nanocomposite. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherms and kinetic modeling showed that the Langmuir model and pseudo-first-order model fit the adsorption data, respectively. MHNTs@PEI achieved an adsorption capacity of 158 mg·g-1. Overall, the abundant adsorption sites significantly improved the adsorption performance of the MHNTs@PEI. Regeneration tests demonstrated that the MHNTs@PEI exhibits effective adsorption, even after undergoing five consecutive cycles. Optimization of key parameters (ratio, volume of elution, elution time and frequency) in the process of adsorption and desorption was also conducted. The limit of detection (LOD) and that of the quantification (LOQ) were 0.19 and 0.63 µg·mL-1, respectively, and the recoveries were 95.67-99.43 %. Finally, the excellent magnetism (43.5 emu·g-1) and the adsorption feature of MHNTs@PEI enabled its successful utilization in analytical sample pretreatment through the extraction of GA from green tea.

RESUMO

Can nano-zero-valent iron, synthesized using oak leaf extract, be the key solution for water preservation, efficiently removing heavy metal ions and phosphate anions simultaneously? This research unveils how this technology not only promises high efficiency in the remediation of water resources, but also sets new standards for environmentally friendly processes. The high antioxidant capacity and high phenol content indicate suggest the possibility of oak-nZVI synthesis using oak leaf extract as a stable material with minimal agglomeration. The simultaneous removal of Cd and phosphates, as well as and Ni and phosphates was optimized by a statistically designed experiment with a definitive screening design approach. By defining the key factors with the most significant impact, a more efficient and faster method is achieved, improving the economic sustainability of the research by minimizing the number of experiments while maximizing precision. In terms of significance, four input parameters affecting process productivity were monitored: initial metal concentration (1-9 mg L-1), initial ion concentration (1-9 mg L-1), pH value (2-10), and oak-nZVI dosage (2-16 mL). The process optimization resulted in the highest simultaneous removal efficiency of 98.99 and 87.30% for cadmium and phosphate ions, respectively. The highest efficiency for the simultaneous removal of nickel and phosphate ions was 93.44 and 96.75%, respectively. The optimization process fits within the confidence intervals, which confirms the assumption that the selected regression model well describes the process. In the context of e of the challenges and problems of environmental protection, this work has shown considerable potential and successful application for the simultaneous removal of Cd(II) and Ni(II) in the presence of phosphates from water.

RESUMO

In this study, Fe0@Fe3O4 was synthesized and used to remove U(VI) from groundwater. Different experimental conditions and cycling experiments were used to investigate the performance of Fe0@Fe3O4 in the U(VI) removal, and the XRD, TEM, XPS and XANES techniques were employed to characterize the Fe0@Fe3O4. The results showed that the U(VI) removal efficiency of Fe0@Fe3O4 was 48.5 mg/g that was higher than the sum of removal efficiency of Fe0 and Fe3O4. The uranium on the surface of Fe0@Fe3O4 mainly existed as U(IV), followed by U(VI) and U(V). The Fe0 content decreased after reaction, while the Fe3O4 content increased. Based on the results of experiments and characterization, the enhanced removal efficiency of Fe0@Fe3O4 was attributed to the synergistic effect of Fe0 and Fe3O4 in which Fe3O4 accelerated the Fe0 corrosion that promoted the progressively formation of Fe(II) that promoted the reduction of adsorbed U(VI) to U(IV) and incorporated U(VI) to U(V). The performance of Fe0@Fe3O4 at near-neutrality condition was better than at acidic and alkalic conditions. The chloride ions, sulfate ions and nitrate ions showed minor effect on the Fe0@Fe3O4 performance, while carbonate ions exhibited significant inhibition. The metal cations showed different effect on the Fe0@Fe3O4 performance. The removal efficiency of Fe0@Fe3O4 decreased with the number of cycling experiment. Ionizing radiation could regenerate the used Fe0@Fe3O4. This study provides insight into the U(VI) removal by Fe0@Fe3O4 in aqueous solution.

RESUMO

Magnetic phosphorous biochar (MPBC) was prepared from Camellia oleifera shells using phosphoric acid activation and iron co-deposition. The materials were characterized and analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), specific surface area and pore size analysis (BET), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). MPBC had a high surface area (1 139.28 m2·g-1) and abundant surface functional groups, and it could achieve fast solid-liquid separation under the action of an external magnetic field. The adsorption behavior and influencing factors of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in water were investigated. The adsorbent showed excellent adsorption properties for SMX under acidic and neutral conditions, and alkaline conditions and the presence of CO32- had obvious inhibition on adsorption. The adsorption process conformed to the quasi-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model. The adsorption rate was fast, and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 356.49 mg·g-1. The adsorption process was a spontaneous exothermic reaction, and low temperature was beneficial to the adsorption. The adsorption mechanism was mainly the chemisorption of pyrophosphate surface functional groups (C-O-P bond) between the SMX molecule and MPBC and also included hydrogen bonding, π-π electron donor-acceptor (π-πEDA) interaction, and a pore filling effect. The development of MPBC adsorbent provides an effective way for resource utilization of waste Camellia oleifera shells and treatment of sulfamethoxazole wastewater.

RESUMO

Long-term phosphorus (P) fertilization results in P accumulation in agricultural soil and increases the risk of P leaching into water bodies. However, evaluating P leaching into groundwater is challenging, especially in clay soil with a high P sorption capacity. This study examined whether the combination of PO4 oxygen isotope (δ18OPO4) analysis and the P saturation ratio (PSR) was useful to identify P enrichment mechanisms in groundwater. We investigated the groundwater and possible P sources in Kubi, western Japan, with intensive citrus cultivation. Shallow groundwater had oxic conditions with high PO4 concentrations, and orchard soil P accumulation was high compared with forest soil. Although the soil had a high P sorption capacity, the PSR was above the threshold, indicating a high risk of P leaching from the surface orchard soil. The shallow groundwater δ18OPO4 values were higher than the expected isotopic equilibrium with pyrophosphatase. The high PSR and δ18OPO4 orchard soil values indicated that P leaching from orchard soil was the major P enrichment mechanism. The Bayesian mixing model estimated that 76.6% of the P supplied from the orchard soil was recycled by microorganisms. This demonstrates the utility of δ18OPO4 and the PSR to evaluate the P source and biological recycling in groundwater.
