OBJECTIVES: Porcelain aorta complicates aortic valve replacement and is an indication for transcatheter approaches. No study has compared surgical and transcatheter valve replacement in the setting of porcelain aorta. We characterize porcelain aorta patients undergoing aortic valve replacement and the association of aortic calcification and outcomes. METHODS: Patients undergoing aortic valve replacement with porcelain aorta were identified. Aortic calcium volume was determined using 3D computed tomography thresholding techniques. Propensity scoring was performed to assess the effect of surgical versus transcatheter approaches. Risk factors for composite major hospital complications (death, stroke and dialysis) were identified using random forest machine learning. RESULTS: From January 2006 to January 2015, 164 patients with porcelain aorta underwent aortic valve replacement [105 (64%) surgical replacement, 59 (36%) transcatheter replacement]. Propensity scoring matched 29 pairs (49% of transcatheter patients). Before matching, 5-year survival was 41% [(43% surgical, 35% transcatheter, P(log-rank) = 0.9]. After matching, mortality for surgical versus transcatheter replacement was 3.4% (n = 1) vs 10% (n = 3), stroke 14% (n = 4) vs 3.4% (n = 1) and dialysis 6.9% (n = 2) versus 11% (n = 3). Matched 5-year survival was 40% after surgical replacement and 29% after transcatheter replacement [P(log-rank) = 0.4]. Total aortic calcium volume was greater in transcatheter than surgical patients [18 (8.0) vs 17 (7.7) ml] and was associated with more major hospital complications after either approach. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical and transcatheter approaches are complementary options for aortic stenosis with porcelain aorta. Surgical valve replacement remains an effective treatment for patients requiring concomitant procedures. Quantifying aortic calcium volume is a helpful risk predictor in all patients with porcelain aorta.

BACKGROUND: Ginsenoside Rg3 (Rg3), one of the most potent components extracted from the roots of the traditional Chinese herb Panax ginseng, has prominent roles in anti-tumor and anti-inflammation. However, the applications of Rg3 against myocardial hypertrophy are not fully revealed. METHODS: Transverse aortic constriction (TAC) was adopted to build the myocardial hypertrophy model in rats. The in vitro model of myocardial hypertrophy was induced by angiotensin II (Ang II) in the human cardiomyocyte cell line AC16 and HCM, which were then treated with different doses of Rg3. The levels of myocardial hypertrophy markers (ANP, BNP, and ß-MHC) were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Western blot (WB) was conducted to verify the expressions of myocardial fibrosis-associated proteins (MyHc, Collagen Ⅰ, and TGF-ß1) and oxidative stress (OS) proteins (HO-1 and Nrf2). The markers of fibrosis, hypertrophy, NLRP3 inflammasome and OS in cardiomyocytes were evaluated by qRT-PCR, western blot (WB), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and cellular immunofluorescence, respectively. Furthermore, pharmacological intervention on sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) was performed to clarify the function of SIRT1 in Rg3-mediated effects. RESULTS: Rg3 dose-dependently attenuated the Ang II-induced myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis. What's more, Rg3 markedly inhibited NLRP3-ASC-Caspase1 inflammasome and OS (reflected by SOD, MDA, HO-1, and Nrf2) in cardiomyocytes treated with Ang II. Mechanistically, Rg3 attenuated NF-κB activation and promoted SIRT1 expression. Inhibiting SIRT1 (by AGK2) mostly reversed Rg3-mediated effects against Ang II-induced myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis. In the TAC rat model, administration of Rg3 mitigated myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis through pressing overproduced inflammation and OS. CONCLUSION: Rg3 prevents Ang II-induced myocardial hypertrophy via inactivating NLRP3 inflammasome and oxidative stress by modulating the SIRT1/NF-κB pathway.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that the failing heart reprograms fuel metabolism toward increased utilization of ketone bodies and that increasing cardiac ketone delivery ameliorates cardiac dysfunction. As an initial step toward development of ketone therapies, we investigated the effect of chronic oral ketone ester (KE) supplementation as a prevention or treatment strategy in rodent heart failure models. METHODS: Two independent rodent heart failure models were used for the studies: transverse aortic constriction/myocardial infarction (MI) in mice and post-MI remodeling in rats. Seventy-five mice underwent a prevention treatment strategy with a KE comprised of hexanoyl-hexyl-3-hydroxybutyrate KE (KE-1) diet, and 77 rats were treated in either a prevention or treatment regimen using a commercially available ß-hydroxybutyrate-(R)-1,3-butanediol monoester (DeltaG; KE-2) diet. RESULTS: The KE-1 diet in mice elevated ß-hydroxybutyrate levels during nocturnal feeding, whereas the KE-2 diet in rats induced ketonemia throughout a 24-hour period. The KE-1 diet preventive strategy attenuated development of left ventricular dysfunction and remodeling post-transverse aortic constriction/MI (left ventricular ejection fraction±SD, 36±8 in vehicle versus 45±11 in KE-1; P=0.016). The KE-2 diet therapeutic approach also attenuated left ventricular dysfunction and remodeling post-MI (left ventricular ejection fraction, 41±11 in MI-vehicle versus 61±7 in MI-KE-2; P<0.001). In addition, ventricular weight, cardiomyocyte cross-sectional area, and the expression of ANP (atrial natriuretic peptide) were significantly attenuated in the KE-2-treated MI group. However, treatment with KE-2 did not influence cardiac fibrosis post-MI. The myocardial expression of the ketone transporter and 2 ketolytic enzymes was significantly increased in rats fed KE-2 diet along with normalization of myocardial ATP levels to sham values. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic oral supplementation with KE was effective in both prevention and treatment of heart failure in 2 preclinical animal models. In addition, our results indicate that treatment with KE reprogrammed the expression of genes involved in ketone body utilization and normalized myocardial ATP production following MI, consistent with provision of an auxiliary fuel. These findings provide rationale for the assessment of KEs as a treatment for patients with heart failure.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditional Chinese medicine Leonurus japonicus Houtt. has a long history in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Stachydrine hydrochloride, the main bioactive ingredient extracted from Leonurus japonicus Houtt., has been shown to have cardioprotective effects. However, the underlying mechanisms of stachydrine hydrochloride haven't been comprehensively studied so far. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to investigate the protective role of stachydrine hydrochloride in heart failure and elucidate its possible mechanisms of action. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vivo, transverse aorta constriction was carried out in C57BL/6J mice, and thereafter, 7.2 mg/kg telmisartan (a selective AT1R antagonist as positive control) and 12 mg/kg stachydrine hydrochloride was administered daily intragastrically for 4 weeks. Cardiac function was evaluated by assessing morphological changes as well as echocardiographic and haemodynamic parameters. In vitro, neonatal rat cardiomyocytes or adult mice cardiomyocytes were treated with stachydrine hydrochloride and challenged with phenylephrine (α-AR agonist). Ventricular myocytes were isolated from the hearts of C57BL/6J mice by Langendorff crossflow perfusion system. Intracellular calcium was measured by an ion imaging system. The length and movement of sarcomere were traced to evaluate the systolic and diastolic function of single myocardial cells. RESULTS: Stachydrine hydrochloride improved the cardiac function and calcium transient amplitudes, and inhibited the SR leakage and the amount of sparks in cardiac myocytes isolated from TAC mice. We also demonstrated that stachydrine hydrochloride could ameliorated phenylephrine-induced enhance in sarcomere contraction, calcium transients and calcium sparks. Moreover, our data shown that stachydrine hydrochloride blocked the hyper-phosphorylation of CaMKII, RyR2, PLN, and prevented the disassociation of FKBP12.6 from RyR2. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that stachydrine hydrochloride exerts beneficial therapeutic effects against heart failure. These cardioprotective effects may be associated with the regulation of calcium handling by stachydrine hydrochloride through inhibiting the hyper-phosphorylation of CaMKII.

To investigate the effect of Yiqi Wenyang (YQWY) decoction on reversing cardiac hypertrophy induced by the transverse aortic constriction (TAC). Wistar rats aged 7-8 weeks were subjected to TAC surgery and then randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 5/group): Sham group, TAC group, low-dose group and high dose group. After 16-week intragastric administration of YQWY decoction, the effect of YQWY decoction on alleviating cardiomyocyte hypertrophy was examined by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), hematoxylin/eosin (HE), wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) staining, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Western blot (WB), immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF), respectively. The results showed significant differences in left ventricle volume-diastole/systole (LV Vol d/s), N-terminal pro-B-type brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) (P < 0.01), Ejection Fraction (EF), LV mass and fractional shortening (FS) (P < 0.05) between YQWY-treated group and TAC group. HE and WGA staining showed that treatment with YQWY decoction dramatically prevented TAC-induced cardiomycyte hypertrophy. Moreover, the results of WB, IHC and IF indicated that administration of YQWY could suppress the expressions of cardiac hypertrophic markers, which included the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), BNP and myosin heavy chain 7 (MYH7) (P < 0.05) and inhibit phosphorylation of GATA binding protein 4 (P-GATA4) (P < 0.05), phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (P-ERK) (P < 0.05), phosphorylation of P38 mitogen activated protein kinase (P-P38) (P < 0.05) and phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (P-JNK) (P < 0.05). Thus, we concluded that YQWY decoction suppressed cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and reversed the impaired heart function, and the curative effects of YQWY decoction were associated with the decreased phosphorylation of GATA4 and mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs), as well as the reduced expression of the downstream targets of GATA4, including ANP, BNP, and MYH7.

Despite advances in our understanding of the relevant anatomy and mapping and catheter ablation techniques of idiopathic outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias, challenging sites for catheter ablation remain the aortic cusps, pulmonary artery, and notably the left ventricular summit. A systematic approach should be used to direct mapping efforts efficiently between endocardial, coronary venous, and epicardial sites. Foci at the left ventricular summit, particularly intraseptal and at the inaccessible epicardial region, remain difficult to reach and when percutaneous techniques fail, surgical ablation remains an option but with risk of late coronary artery stenosis.

Bakuchiol (Bak), a monoterpene phenol isolated from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, has been widely used to treat a large variety of diseases in both Indian and Chinese folkloric medicine. However, the effects of Bak on cardiac hypertrophy remain unclear. Therefore, the present study was designed to determine whether Bak could alleviate cardiac hypertrophy. Mice were subjected to aortic banding (AB) to induce cardiac hypertrophy model. Bak of 1 ml/100 g body weight was given by oral gavage once a day from 1 to 8 weeks after surgery. Our data demonstrated for the first time that Bak could attenuate pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy and could attenuate fibrosis and the inflammatory response induced by AB. The results further revealed that the effect of Bak on cardiac hypertrophy was mediated by blocking the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. In vitro studies performed in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes further proved that the protective effect of Bak on cardiac hypertrophy is largely dependent on the NF-κB pathway. Based on our results, Bak shows profound potential for its application in the treatment of pathological cardiac hypertrophy, and we believe that Bak may be a promising therapeutic candidate to treat cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure.

BACKGROUND: In January 2015, we created a multidisciplinary Aortic Center with the collaboration of Vascular Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Anesthesia and Hospital Administration. We report the initial success of creating a Comprehensive Aortic Center. METHODS: All aortic procedures performed from January 1, 2015 until December 31, 2016 were entered into a prospectively collected database and compared with available data for 2014. Primary outcomes included the number of all aortic related procedures, transfer acceptance rate, transfer time, and proportion of elective/emergent referrals. RESULTS: The Aortic Center included 5 vascular surgeons, 2 cardiac surgeons, and 2 interventional radiologists. Workflow processes were implemented to streamline patient transfers as well as physician and operating room notification. Total aortic volume increased significantly from 162 to 261 patients. This reflected an overall 59% (P = 0.0167) increase in all aorta-related procedures. We had a 65% overall increase in transfer requests with 156% increase in acceptance of referrals and 136% drop in transfer denials (P < 0.0001). Emergent abdominal aortic cases accounted for 17% (n = 45) of our total aortic volume in 2015. The average transfer time from request to arrival decreased from 515 to 352 min, although this change was not statistically significant. We did see a significant increase in the use of air-transfers for aortic patients (P = 0.0041). Factorial analysis showed that time for transfer was affected only by air-transfer use, regardless of the year the patient was transferred. Transfer volume and volume of aortic related procedures remained stable in 2016. CONCLUSIONS: Designation as a comprehensive Aortic Center with implementation of strategic workflow systems and a culture of "no refusal of transfers" resulted in a significant increase in aortic volume for both emergent and elective aortic cases. Case volumes increased for all specialties involved in the center. Improvements in transfer center and emergency medical services communication demonstrated a trend toward more efficient transfer times. These increases and improvements were sustainable for 2 years after this designation.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous scar-related left atrial tachycardia (AT) is a rare arrhythmia. We describe a patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) who developed multiple, both focal and macroreentrant left ATs associated with a spontaneous scar located at the aorta-left atrium (LA) contiguous area. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old man with HCM complained of palpitations. Twelve-lead electrocardiogram showed narrow QRS tachycardia with 2:1 atrioventricular conduction. Two sessions of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) were required to eliminate all left ATs. In the first session, 3-dimensional electroanatomical mapping fused with the image constructed by multi-detector computed tomography showed a clockwise macroreentrant AT (AT1) associated with a low-voltage or dense scar area located along the aorta-LA contiguous area. AT1 was eliminated by RFA to the narrow isthmus with slow conduction velocity within the scar. Additional ATs (AT2-AT4) occurred 1 month after the first ablation. In the second session, AT2 and AT3 were identified as focal ATs with centrifugal propagation and few accompanying fragmentations, and AT4 as a macroreentrant AT with features similar to AT1. AT2 and AT3 were successfully eliminated by performing RFA to the earliest activation site, and AT4 was terminated by performing RFA to the narrow isthmus with slow conduction velocity. No ATs have recurred for 11 months after these RFAs. Interestingly, the substrate for all left ATs was associated with the aorta-LA contiguous area. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first case of multiple, both focal and macroreentrant left ATs associated with a contiguous aorta-LA spontaneous scar area in a patient with HCM.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of Shenfuqiangxin capsule and the underlying mechanism on cardio-renal syndrome (CRS) in rats induced by infrarenal aortic-clamping after renal ischaemia. METHODS: Male Wistar rats underwent infrarenal aortic-clamping after renal ischaemia or sham operation. The surviving CRS rats were divided randomly into three groups: CRS group (CRS + 10 mL·kg(-1)· d(-1) pure water by gavage), SFQX group (CRS + 13.2 g crude drug·kg- 1·d- 1 Shenfuqiangxin by gavage), and handleregionpeptide(HRP)group(CRS+10mg/kg HRP by vein). Sham operation rats were given 10 mL·kg-1·d-1 pure water. Treatments were given 8 weeks after surgery, which lasted for 4 weeks. The rats were detected for heart structure and function by transthoracic echocardiography. PPR mRNA was detected by Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). To determine whether the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal pathway is included in the heart and kidney protective function of Shenfuqiangxin capsule, MAPK related proteins such as posophorylated C-Jun amino terminal kinase (p-JNK), posophorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase ½ (p-ERK1/2), posophorylated p38 (p-p38) were examined by Western Blot. Apoptosis in heart and kidney tissues were detected by dUTP Nick End Labeling staining. RESULTS: Shenfuqiangxin capsule alleviated myocardial apoptosis and inhibited PRR mRNA expression and p-JNK, p-ERK1/2, p-p38 proteins expression in CRS rats. CONCLUSION: All the results suggest that Shenfuqiangxin capsule improves the injured heart and kidney function maybe through inhibition of MAPK response pathway.

BACKGROUND: Neonates undergoing surgery require analgesic medication to ameliorate acute pain. These medications produce negative side effects. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has an antinociceptive effect in animals, but this has not been evaluated in human neonates. We evaluated the DHA effect on cumulative dose and duration of analgesics administered to neonates undergoing cardiovascular surgery. METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed with data from a clinical trial, in which enteral DHA was administered perioperatively compared with sunflower oil (SO). Present study assessed the antinociceptive effect of DHA by measuring the cumulative dose and duration of analgesics administered during postoperative stay in a neonatal intensive care unit. Multivariate linear regression models were performed. RESULTS: Seventeen neonates received DHA and 18 received SO in the control group. Compared with the control group, the DHA group received lower cumulative dose (14.6 ± 2.2 vs. 25.2 ± 4.8 µg/kg, p = 0.029) and shorter duration of buprenorphine (2 days (1-8) vs. 4.5 days (1-12); p = 0.053). After adjusting for confounders, the DHA group received significantly lesser buprenorphine (ß = -27 µg/kg, p = 0.028; R2 model = 0.90) for shorter duration (ß = -9 days, p = 0.003; R2 model = 0.94). No differences in fentanyl or ketorolac were detected. CONCLUSIONS: Buprenorphine administration was reduced in neonates who received DHA, suggesting that DHA likely has analgesic effects.

A 57-year-old woman presented with acute back pain, diagnosed with acute type A aortic dissection, and we performed emergency ascending aortic replacement. During surgery, until cardiopulmonary bypass was started, the dissection did not extend to the orifice of the both coronary arteries. When aortic replacement was completed and just after the return of spontaneous beating, ventricular fibrillation (Vf) suddenly occurred. At that time, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) revealed that dissection extended from the left main trunk (LMT) to the left circumflex artery (LCX). Recurrent Vf and circulatory collapse necessitated the application of a percutaneous cardiopulmonary support system (PCPS), while the surgeons performed cardiac massage. Additional emergency coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) was immediately implemented. After the CABG, TEE showed that the true lumens of the LMT and LCX were dilated, allowing an increased flow to the LAD and LCX. The patient was discharged 2 months later. Although rare, coronary ischemia can be a complication of acute aortic dissection, resulting in decreased survival. Development of dissection to the coronary artery can also occur both intra- and postoperatively. In such instances, rapid diagnosis and treatment are important to save the patient.

Questions of saving of the patient's blood and limitation of the use of donated blood in the aortic surgery remain relevant in contrast with interventions on the valves of the heart and coronary arteries. In this regard, the aim of the study was to develop and introduce ofcomplex of technologies for saving the patient's blood in order to minimize transfusion of donor blood components during operations on the ascending aorta and aortic arch under hypothermic arrest. The study included 37 patients operated on the ascending aorta and aortic arch under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and hypothermic cardiac arrest (CA) in 2013-2014 (Group 1). 2nd group consisted of 65 patients who at the same time performed reconstructive surgery on the ascending aorta with CBP without stopping the blood circulation. The comparative aspect studied the following parameters: duration of the CBP, CA, temperature, volume of intraoperative and postoperative blood loss, frequency of use of donor blood components autoplasma, washed red blood cells, autologous blood, hemostatic agents, the frequency resternotomy, hematocrit dynamics, glucose, and blood lactate. Comparative studies have shown that the amount of intraoperative blood loss during operations on the aortic arch under the CA was 1294 ± 303 mL, 20% higher than the blood loss during operations on the ascending aorta without CA. Program of saving of the blood of patients with aortic disease included preoperative preparation of autoplasma in 60% of patients, intraoperative collection and laundering of autoerythrocytes in 40-70% of patients and autotransfusion modified method, the improvement of surgical and pharmacological hemostasis and monitoring. Design and implementation of these methods reduced the patients need for donor red blood cells (from 76 to 47%), fresh frozen plasma (from 65 to 35%) during the operation at the aortic arch and the ascending aorta and to completely avoid the use of donor blood in 25% of patients. Proof of the adequacy of the developed strategy of conservation and limitation of the patient's blood was allogeneic blood conservation targets hemoglobin, hematocrit levels and metabolism at the end of the operation.

Current trend in transfusion is a decreasing of the donor's blood use due to possible complications. The article deals with analysis of intraoperative blood loss in different surgeries on the heart and aorta and of a role of blood-saving factors in decreasing of the donor's blood transfusion. We found a correlation between the blood components need and type of surgery and assessed a preoperative provision of autoplasma and intraoperative autohemotransfusion with a blood sampling from the right atrium before the beginning of artificial circulation (Complex use of the blood-saving methods with a prophylactics and treatment of hemostasis disturbances allowed the significantly decreasing of the donor's blood use. 50-70% of patients did not receive components of the donor's blood during cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of retrograde cardioplegia for myocardial protection is still controversial. In our institution, we exclusively use intermittent administration of tepid, undiluted blood supplemented with potassium and magnesium for the cases with aortic insufficiency, requiring aortotomy, or undergoing mitral valve repair. In using this retrograde technique, we make a point of cannulating a retrograde perfusion catheter under direct vision following right atriotomy. The purpose of this retrospective study is to evaluate the clinical outcome of using this technique. METHODS: This study comprises 49 patients who underwent elective valve surgery using direct-vision retrograde cardioplegia exclusively, requiring more than 3h aortic cross-clamping. Their clinical outcome was reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: There was no hospital mortality in this study. No patient was noted to have evidence of mediastinitis, myocardial infarction, or cerebral complications in the postoperative period. The case requiring the longest aortic cross-clamping time (380 min) survived the operation without the use of intra-aortic balloon pumping or percutaneous cardiopulmonary support, and the postoperative course was uneventful. CONCLUSIONS: Our result suggests that direct-vision retrograde cardioplegia is a safe and effective method of cardioplegia delivery, and provides a longer period of myocardial protection than previously thought.

BACKGROUND: Coagulopathy is a common complication after ascending and transverse arch aortic surgery with profound hypothermic circuit arrest (PHCA). Blood conservation strategies to reduce transfusion have been ongoing and involve multiple treatment modalities in modern cardiac surgery. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of autologous platelet-rich plasma (aPRP) as a blood conservation technique to reduce blood transfusion in ascending and arch aortic surgery. METHODS: Between 2003 and 2009, we retrospectively reviewed 685 cases of ascending aorta and transverse arch repair using PHCA. A total of 287 patients in which aPRP was used (aPRP group) were compared with 398 patients who did have aPRP (non-aPRP group). Perioperative transfusion requirements and clinical outcomes that included early mortality, postoperative stroke, renal dysfunction, prolonged ventilation, coagulopathy, and length of postoperative intensive care unit stay were analyzed. The data were analyzed by mean and frequency for continuous variables and qualitative variables. To account for potential selection bias, 2 types of propensity analysis were performed. RESULTS: In both unadjusted and adjusted analysis, perioperative transfusions were fewer in the aPRP group compared with the non-aPRP group: (3.9 units fewer packed red blood cells, 4.5 units fewer fresh frozen plasma, 7.9 units fewer platelets, and 6.8 units fewer cryoprecipitate). In all analyses, postoperative morbidity (stroke, duration of mechanical ventilation, and intensive care unit stay) were significantly improved. Hospital mortality rate was not significantly decreased. CONCLUSIONS: The utilization of aPRP was associated with a reduction in allogeneic blood transfusions as well as a decrease in early postoperative morbidity during repairs of the ascending and transverse arch aorta using PHCA.

The potential anti-inflammatory effects of dietary fish oil (FO) have been studied in numerous clinical trials. However, variation in lifestyle and morbidity among patients can be difficult to control. In the present study, the impact of a 3-week dietary pre-treatment with 10% (w/w) FO (n 28), sunflower oil (SO, n 28), or animal fat (AF, n 28) was evaluated with respect to post-operative responses in inflammatory markers in a porcine model on aortic vascular prosthetic graft infection. In the early post-operative period (0 < day ≤ 3), FO suppressed whole blood IL-8 and tumor necrosis factor-α responsiveness to LPS stimulation, decreased peripheral leukocyte IL-8 mRNA abundance, reinforced an increase in total leukocyte count, and counteracted a decrease in mononuclear leukocyte count compared with SO. In the late post-operative period (3 < day ≤ 14), FO increased total leukocyte count and showed higher maximum CRP and haptoglobin concentrations compared with SO. Compared with AF, FO decreased peripheral leukocyte IL-8 mRNA abundance in the early post-operative period, and increased total leukocyte count and maximum CRP concentration in the late post-operative period. In conclusion, the post-operative response in a number of inflammatory markers was affected by FO, and this was most apparent compared with SO.
