Polymeric membranes have garnered great interest in wastewater treatment; however, fouling is known as their main limitation. Therefore, the blending of hydrophilic nanoparticles in polymeric membranes' structure is a promising approach for fouling reduction. Herein, a hydrophilic boehmite-tannic acid-graphene quantum dot (BM-TA-GQD) nanoparticle was synthesized and blended in a polyethersulfone polymeric membrane in different percentages. The fabricated membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) images, water contact angle, porosity measurement, and antibacterial and antifouling properties. Surface SEM images of the modified membranes showed good dispersion of nanoparticles up to 0.5 wt%, which resulted in hydrophilicity and pure water flux enhancement. Based on AFM images, the mean roughness (Sa) of the fabricated membranes decreased from 2.07 to 0.84 nm for the bare and optimum membranes, respectively. In terms of performance, increasing the nanoparticle percentages up to 0.5 wt% resulted in the flux recovery ratio developing from 44.58% for the bare membrane to 71.35% for the 0.5 wt% BM-TA-GQD/PES membrane (optimum membrane). The antibacterial property of fabricated membranes was studied against biologically treated soft drink industrial wastewater (BTSDIW) as a bacterial source. The results showed that the turbidity of solutions containing permeated wastewater from the modified membranes (0.1, 0.5, and 1 wt% of BM-TA-GQD) was lower than that obtained from the unmodified membrane. These results confirmed the antibacterial properties of fabricated membranes. Finally, the optimal membrane (0.5 wt% BM-TA-GQD) was examined for post-treatment of the BTSDIW. An effluent COD of 13 mg/L and turbidity of 2 NTU showed a successful performance of the filtration process. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Ultrafiltration PES membranes were modified by different loadings of BM-TA-GQD. Hydrophilicity improvement was achieved by adding BM-TA-GQD nanoparticles. Expansion of size and number of macro-voids in modified membranes was confirmed. Membrane roughness was reduced in the BM-TA-GQD blended membranes. The optimum membrane was efficient in COD and turbidity removal.

BACKGROUND: Studies about the association of carbonated/soft drinks, coffee, and tea with depression and anxiety are scarce and inconclusive and little is known about this association in European adults. Our aim was to examine the association between the consumption of these beverages and depressive and anxiety symptom severity. METHODS: A total of 941 European overweight adults (mean age, 46.8 years) with subsyndromal depression that participated in the MooDFOOD depression prevention randomized controlled trial (Clinical Trials.gov identifier: NCT2529423; date of the study: from 2014 to 2018) were analyzed. Depressive and anxiety symptom severity and beverage consumption were assessed using multilevel mixed-effects ordinal logistic regression models for each beverage consumption (carbonated/soft drink with sugar, carbonated/soft drink with non-nutritive sweeteners, coffee, and tea) with the three repeated measures of follow-up (baseline and 6 and 12 months). A case report form for participants' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, the Food Frequency Questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item Scale, the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0, the Short Questionnaire to Assess Health-Enhancing Psychical Activity, and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test were the research tools used. RESULTS: Daily consumption of carbonated/soft drinks with sugar was associated with a higher level of anxiety. Trends towards significance were found for associations between both daily consumption of carbonated/soft drinks with sugar and non-nutritive sweeteners and a higher level of depression. No relationship was found between coffee and tea consumption and the level of depression and anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: The high and regular consumption of carbonated/soft drink with sugar (amount of consumption: ≥1 unit (200 mL)/day) tended to be associated with higher level of anxiety in a multicountry sample of overweight subjects with subsyndromal depressive symptoms. It is important to point out that further research in this area is essential to provide valuable information about the intake patterns of non-alcoholic beverages and their relationship with affective disorders in the European adult population.

INTRODUCTION: To investigate the association between soft drinks, tea and coffee consumption, and risk of fracture in the China Health and Nutrition Survey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study with multi-stage random cluster sampling was conducted in nine Chinese provinces in 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2011. A total of 36,740 participants were included the data analyses. Self-administered questionnaires and physical examinations provided data on beverages consumption, fracture history, and other potential risk factors. Binary logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) adjusted for potentially confounding variables. RESULTS: The prevalence of fracture increased over the 7-year period of the surveys, with 1833 (5.3%) participants reporting a fracture history. Soft drink consumption increased over this time period, and tea consumption was relatively stable, whereas coffee consumption tended to increase sharply. Consumers of soft drinks ≥ 3 times/week (versus never) had a higher risk of fracture (OR = 1.86, 95% CI = 1.43-2.32, p < 0.001, p for trend = 0.039). Consumers of tea ≥ 5 cups/day (versus never) also had a higher risk of fracture (OR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.09-1.45, p = 0.028, p for trend < 0.001). Similarly, consumers of coffee ≥ 2 cups/day (versus never) had a higher risk of fracture (OR = 1.84, 95% CI = 1.01-3.34, p = 0.045, p for trend = 0.002). Subgroup analyses by gender suggested that coffee consumption increased risk of fracture in females (OR = 1.84, 95% CI = 1.32-2.63, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that high consumption of soft drinks, tea and coffee is associated with an increased risk of fracture in the Chinese population. Which has important public health implications given the widespread consumption of these beverages.

OBJECTIVES: Kombuchas and other tea-based beverages are often perceived as healthy products despite the lack of knowledge on their effects on oral health. This in vitro study determined the erosive potential of commercial kombuchas, and ice teas compared to cola drinks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pH and fluoride content of 7 kombuchas and 18 tea drinks were measured with ion-selective electrodes. Calcium dissolution from hydroxyapatite grains was quantified by atomic absorption spectroscopy after beverage exposure. The effect of beverages on the enamel surface was visualized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Distilled water, and cola drinks were used as negative and positive controls. RESULTS: The kombuchas exhibited lower pH values (2.82-3.66) than the ice teas (2.94-4.86), but still higher than the cola drinks (2.48-2.54). The fluoride concentration varied between 0.05 and 0.46 ppm and for 7 beverages the concentration was below the detection limit. The calcium release for kombuchas was 198-746 mg/l, for ice teas 16.1-507 mg/l, and for cola drinks 57.7-71.9 mg/l. Twenty-two beverages had a significantly greater calcium release than the cola drinks (p = .009-.014). The surface etching of the enamel was seen in the SEM analysis after beverage exposure. CONCLUSIONS: Tea-based beverages have even higher erosive potential than cola drinks. Kombuchas especially, displayed a considerable erosive potential.

We aimed to analyze the relationship between coffee, tea, and carbonated beverages and cardiovascular risk factors. We used data from the fourth to eighth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2007-2016, 2019-2020). We categorized the frequency of intake into three groups (<1 time/week, 1 time/week to <1 time/day, and ≥1 time/day). Subsequently, logistic regression analyses by sex were performed to assess cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidemia (DL), or metabolic syndrome (MetS)) according to the frequency of coffee, tea, and carbonated beverage intake. For HTN, coffee intake showed an inverse relationship and tea intake showed a direct relationship. For DM, coffee intake showed an inverse relationship, and tea and carbonated beverage intake showed a direct relationship. For DL, coffee intake showed an inverse relationship, whereas tea intake demonstrated a direct relationship. In addition, carbonated beverage intake showed a direct relationship with MetS. Coffee intake showed an inverse relationship with HTN, DM, and DL. However, tea intake showed a direct relationship with HTN, DM, and DL, whereas carbonated beverage intake showed a direct relationship with DM and MetS.

BACKGROUND The majority of dental professionals currently recognize lithium disilicate E-max ceramic veneers as a the most widely used, conservative, and effective cosmetic materials in dentistry. This study aimed to compare the degree of surface changes - roughness (Ra), depth (Rz), and mean color changes (ΔE00) - of computer-aided design-computer-aided manufactured (CAD/CAM) ceramic veneers materials of varying thicknesses caused by staining by green tea, coffee, and Coca-Cola using digital spectrophotometer. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study was conducted at King Khalid University, College of Dentistry. Lithium disilicate glass ceramic (LDGC) material was used to create 60 rectangular slices using the CAD/CAM system. The material thickness and the type of beverage were measured. The specimens were immersed in beverages according to the manufacturer's instructions. Specimen description and tomography were completed with a 3D noncontact surface metrology using interferometry. The "VITA Easy-Shade" spectrophotometer was used to measure ΔE00. It was recorded after 2 weeks for different material thicknesses after immersing samples in green tea, coffee, and Coca-Cola staining materials.f RESULTS Significant changes in ceramic thickness were found in Ra and Rz of 0.07 and 1.00 mm after 14 days of staining. Coca-Cola showed a significant difference in Ra and Rz with 1.00 mm thickness measurement compared to the 0.07 mm group with ≤ of 0.05, which was considered statistically significant. Highest ΔE00 were recorded among samples stained by Coca-Cola, followed by coffee, for both thicknesses. CONCLUSIONS Those findings support previous studies using spectrophotometric analysis of staining of CAD-CAM ceramic veneers that Coca-Cola followed by coffee resulted in the greatest color ΔE00 change.

Whether beverage consumption is associated with longitudinal observation of telomere length remains unclear. We evaluated the association of green tea, coffee, and soft drink consumption with 6-year changes in leukocyte telomere length (LTL). The study included 1952 participants who provided whole blood samples for LTL assays during the baseline (year 2011-2012) and follow-up (year 2017-2018) periods and reported baseline information on consumption of green tea, coffee, and soft drinks. Robust regression analysis was used to analyze the association adjusted for potential confounding variables. In the results, an inverse association between green tea consumption and LTL changes from baseline, which indicate telomere shortening, was found; regression coefficient [95% confidence interval] was - 0.097 [- 0.164, - 0.029] for participants who daily consumed at least 1 cup of green tea compared with non-consumers (p value = 0.006). This association was stronger among women (versus men) and younger participants aged 50-64 years (versus older). However, a positive association between soft drink consumption and LTL shortening was observed among women (p value < 0.05). Coffee consumption was not associated with LTL changes. These findings suggested that green tea consumption may be protective against telomere shortening reflecting biological aging whereas coffee and soft drink consumption may not.

BACKGROUND: The lack of a national table informing the caffeine contents in foods, drinks, dietary supplements, and medications sold in Brazil added to the noncompulsory disclosure of caffeine contents on labels of food products makes it difficult to estimate caffeine consumption in the Brazilian population. Therefore, this study aimed to develop the Brazilian Caffeine Content Table (BraCaffT). METHODS: A systematic search for caffeine levels in foods, drinks, recipes, supplements, and medications was performed through a literature review, afterward collecting data from the United States Department of Agriculture Food Data Central, information from manufacturers' and websites, and the Brazilian official medication guide. Subsequently, data systematization was performed in a spreadsheet with standardized values presented in mg of caffeine per 100 g or 100 mL of food or drink and a capsule or pill for medications and some dietary supplements. RESULTS: The BraCaffT presents 57 items, divided into 11 categories: coffees, teas and infusions, cocoa powder, chocolates, cocoa-based beverages, desserts, soft drinks, energy drinks, guaraná powder, dietary supplements, and medications. CONCLUSIONS: The BraCaffT emerges as an instrument of great relevance and wide applicability in clinical contexts, in academic research, and as a database for the Brazilian population to better understand the amounts of caffeine in foods, drinks, dietary supplements, and medications consumed daily favoring a safe intake.

Lycium barbarum L., used in Chinese traditional medicine for centuries, has gained popularity in Europe in the last decade because of its health-promoting properties assigned to phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. Goji fruits and extracts are often used as ingredients in popular homemade milk cocktails. Within this study, the microbiological stability of the milkshake, with the addition of berries from NingXia Province and their extract, was evaluated using the ComBase® prognostic model. The extraction of dry berries in water at 70 °C for 72 h produced an extract showing radical inhibition of 64.9% and a total phenol content of 63.6 mg g-1. The phenolic compounds with the highest concentrations were in turn: 3-hydroxybenzoic acid, gallic acid, procyanidin B2, and catechin. The milkshake inoculated with the reference B. subtilis was a model for the study of its microbiological stability. Using ComBase®, a microbiological response to the delayed cooling of goji berry extract and the milkshake with the addition of goji berries was predicted and the model's accuracy assessed. The best-performing models were constructed for extract (Bias factor Bf 1.33, Accuracy factor Af 3.43) and milkshake (Bf 1.29, Af 1.65) in a profile simulating delayed refrigeration (22.5 °C-9 °C-23 °C). Despite discrepancies between predicted and observed bacterial growth due to the antimicrobial effect of the derivatives of goji berries, the models were validated as "overpredict", i.e., "fail safe", and may be used to prognose the stability of these products in the given temperature profile.

Cravings for a range of substances including drugs, alcohol, and food have been shown to predict subsequent consumption or use. However, this link has not yet been systematically examined for beverages other than alcohol. The present study aimed to provide a comprehensive investigation of cravings for non-alcoholic beverages and their link to consumption. Participants were 128 undergraduate students (17-25 years) who completed a craving diary and daily consumption measure over a period of a week. Cravings were reported for a range of beverages, including tea, juice, and flavoured milk, but by far the most craved beverages were water, coffee, and soft drink. Stronger cravings were associated with a greater likelihood of drinking and drinking more of the craved beverage. This was particularly the case for soft drink. Unlike water, cravings for coffee and soft drink were triggered by factors other than thirst, and the number of cravings predicted the total amount drunk over the week. The findings demonstrate the existence of cravings for non-alcoholic beverages such as soft drink, and point to these cravings as a potential target for reducing consumption.

To study the effects of different types of commercially available drinks/beverages on neurobehavior using the model organism C. elegans, and critically review their potential health hazards. Eighteen kinds of beverages from the supermarket were randomly selected and grouped into seven categories namely functional beverage, tea beverage, plant protein beverage, fruit juice beverage, dairy beverage, carbonated beverage and coffee beverage. The pH value, specific gravity and osmotic pressure were also examined. The L4 stage N2 worms were exposed to different concentration of tested beverages (0, 62.5, 125, 250 and 500 µL/mL) for 24 h to measure the survival rate and locomotory behavior such as head thrashing, body bending as well as pharyngeal pumping. All the 18 beverages tested did not induce any visible lethal effects in the nematodes. However, exposure to different types of tested beverages exhibited different effects on the behavioral ability of C. elegans: (1) sports functional beverage and herbal tea drink accelerated the head thrashing and body bending of nematodes when compared to the control group (P < 0.05). (2) The vibration frequency of the pharyngeal pump of nematodes was significantly accelerated after treated with three plant protein beverages (almond milk, coconut milk and milk tea) and dairy products A and B (P < 0.05), and decelerated after treatment with other tested beverages. (3) Carbonated beverage significantly inhibits the head thrashing, body bending and pharyngeal pumping vibration (P < 0.05). Our results indicate that 18 kinds of popular beverages in the market have different influence on the neurobehavior in C. elegans, which may be related to their different components or properties. Further research would be required to conduct a systematic analysis of the effect of beverages by appropriate kinds, taking into consideration other endpoints such as reproduction, lifespan and molecular stress response, etc., and to elucidate the mechanism for its potential health hazards.

Determining the level of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in packaged carbonated beverages is a current need to ensure food safety. High-selectivity and -accuracy identification of individual PAEs can be achieved by chromatographic and mass spectrometric (MS) techniques. However, these methods are slow; involve complicated, expensive instruments in professional laboratories; and consume a large amount of organic solvents. As such, a food analysis method is needed to conveniently and rapidly evaluate multiple contaminants on site. In this study, with the assistance of ultrasound, we quickly determined the total PAEs in soft drinks using 1.5 mL of petroleum ether in one step. Then, we determined the characteristic molecular fluorescence spectrum of all PAEs in samples (excitation (Ex)/emission (Em) at 218/351 nm) using selectively concentrated sulfuric acid derivatization. The relative standard deviations of the fluorescent intensities of mixed solutions with five different PAEs were lower than 7.1% at three concentration levels. The limit of detection of the proposed method is 0.10 µmol L-1, which matches that of some of the chromatographic methods, but the proposed method uses less organic solvent and cheaper instruments. These microextraction devices and the fluorescence spectrometer are portable and provide an instant result, which shows promise for the evaluation of the total level of PAEs in beverages on site. The proposed method successfully detected the total level of PAEs in 38 kinds of soft drink samples from local supermarkets, indicating its potential for applications in the packaged beverage industry.

BACKGROUND: The association between beverage intake and ulcerative colitis (UC) is not well-established, with no available data from Arab countries. Herein, we investigated the potential association of consuming coffee, tea, and carbonated soft drinks with UC among a population from Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This hospital-based case-control study used data of 171 newly diagnosed UC patients and 400 patients with other gastrointestinal conditions who served as controls. All UC cases were ascertained by endoscopy, while beverage intake was assessed by a questionnaire that was completed before diagnosis. We computed odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of UC and UC extension for frequent versus infrequent intakes of coffee, tea, and carbonated soft drinks using logistic regression. RESULTS: Overall, 23.4% of UC patients had pancolitis, 21.1% extensive, 51.4% left-sided, and 4.1% proctitis. UC patients had a similar sex distribution to the controls but were older and had a lower BMI. After adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, and smoking history, frequent intakes of coffee and tea were associated with lower odds of UC: 0.62 (0.42, 0.91) and 0.53 (0.35, 0.79), respectively. On the other hand, frequent intakes of carbonated soft drinks were associated with increased odds of UC: 9.82 (6.12, 15.76). The frequency of beverage consumption was not associated with UC extension. CONCLUSION: UC was negatively associated with frequent coffee and tea consumption but positively associated with frequent carbonated soft drink intake in Saudi people. More population-based prospective cohort studies are needed to confirm our findings.

BACKGROUND: The popularity of beverages such as cold coffee, iced tea, and energy drinks has risen tremendously among athletes and youths. Energy drinks are used to enhance performance due to the presence of a high amount of caffeine (CFN) and sugars, as well as other constituents such as vitamins, amino acids, taurine, extracts of Ginkgo biloba, ginseng, guarana, and other herbal products. Commercial drinks are promoted as being beneficial to health; thus it is an important concern regarding adverse effects linked with these drinks or products. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to develop and validate the ultra performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detector (UPLC-PDA) method for the estimation of CFN in eight marketed non-alcoholic drinks including two soft drinks and six energy drinks. METHOD: The chromatographic separation of CFN was achieved on Acquity UPLC® CSHTM C18 1.7 µm, 2.1 × 100 mm column, using isocratic mode, mobile phase comprising acetonitrile and water (30:70, v/v) at a flow rate 0.3 mL/min using injection volume 1 µL. RESULTS: The elution of CFN occurred at 1.06 min, and the calibration curve of the CFN was computed from the peak area ratio detected at 273 nm. All the validation parameters were found within the assay variability limits as per ICH guidelines. The obtained results revealed that the soft drinks SD1 and SD2 have 87.21 ± 1.28 and 101.81 ± 1.52% (w/w), whereas CFN concentration in energy drink brands ED1, ED2, ED3, ED4, ED5, and ED6 was 95.90 ± 1.62, 64.0 ± 1.07, 76.68 ± 1.95, 74.97 ± 2.33, 82.09 ± 2.43, and 88.04 ± 2.94% (w/w) of labeled claims, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The developed UPLC method was found suitable for the quality control of commercial soft and energy drinks containing CFN. HIGHLIGHTS: The developed chromatographic method is very simple, cost effective and could be utilized for the routine analysis of caffeine in the soft and energy drinks.

BACKGROUND: Caffeine is the most frequently used psychoactive substance in the United States and >90% of reproductive-age women report some amount of intake daily. Despite biological plausibility, previous studies on caffeine and fecundability report conflicting results. Importantly, prior studies measured caffeine exposure exclusively by self-report, which is subject to measurement error and does not account for factors that influence caffeine metabolism. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to examine associations between preconception serum caffeine metabolites, caffeinated beverage intake, and fecundability. METHODS: Participants included 1228 women aged 18-40 y with a history of 1-2 pregnancy losses in the EAGeR (Effects of Aspirin in Gestation and Reproduction) trial. We prospectively evaluated associations of preconception caffeine metabolites (i.e., caffeine, paraxanthine, and theobromine) measured from 1191 serum samples untimed to a specific time of day, self-reported usual caffeinated beverage intakes at baseline, and time-varying cycle-average caffeinated beverage intake, with fecundability. Using Cox proportional hazards models, we estimated fecundability odds ratios (FORs) and 95% CIs according to each metabolite. Follow-up was complete for 89% (n = 1088) of participants. RESULTS: At baseline, 85%, 73%, and 91% of women had detectable serum caffeine, paraxanthine, and theobromine, respectively. A total of 797 women became pregnant during ≤6 cycles of preconception follow-up. After adjusting for potential confounders, neither serum caffeine [tertile (T)3 compared with T1 FOR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.71, 1.08], paraxanthine (T3 compared with T1 FOR: 0.92; 95% CI: 0.75, 1.14), nor theobromine (T3 compared with T1 FOR: 1.15; 95% CI: 0.95, 1.40) were associated with fecundability. Baseline intake of total caffeinated beverages was not associated with fecundability (>3 compared with 0 servings/d adjusted FOR: 0.99; 95% CI: 0.74, 1.34), nor was caffeinated coffee (>2 compared with 0 servings/d adjusted FOR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.45, 1.92) or caffeinated soda (>2 servings/d adjusted FOR: 0.92; 95% CI: 0.71, 1.20). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings are reassuring that caffeine exposure from usual low to moderate caffeinated beverage intake likely does not influence fecundability.This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00467363.

La alta prevalencia de desgaste dental erosivo producido por la ingestión frecuente de bebidas gaseosas, se ha convertido en uno de los principales problemas de salud bucal en niños, adolescentes y adultos jóvenes, cuyo tratamiento deviene en desafío para los profesionales de la salud. La investigación se propuso evaluar el efecto erosivo exógeno de las bebidas gaseosas, sobre el tejido dentario mediante el proceso de termociclado in vitro, en el que se sometieron 50 premolares extraídos a la experiencia de exposición a una bebida gaseosa, bajo condiciones de experimentación, resultando una diferencia significativa entre el peso inicial pre termociclado en cada pieza y el peso final obtenido después del proceso, lo cual demuestra el efecto negativo del consumo de bebidas gaseosas. En ese mismo sentido, y como parte de esta investigación, se evaluó los efectos beneficiosos de los probióticos como la L-alanina como suplemento de las bacterias beneficiosas a la salud bucal como el Lactobalilos rhamnosus GG que logran detener el avance de bacterias patógenas y oportunistas como el Streptococcus mutans. Los resultados mostraron que a medida que aumenta la concentración del probiótico, mayor es la disminución del número de unidades formadoras de colonias y de las biopelículas de Streptococcus mutans. Además, la investigación aborda la percepción del riesgo en estudiantes, de ingestión de bebidas gaseosas en la erosión dentaria y los criterios que sobre el tema tienen sus profesores tutores(AU)


The high prevalence of erosive dental wear caused by the frequent ingestion of soft drinks has become one of the main oral health problems in children, adolescents and young adults, whose treatment becomes a challenge for health professionals. The research aimed to evaluate the exogenous erosive effect of soft drinks on dental tissue through the in vitro thermocycling process, in which 50 extracted premolars were subjected to the experience of exposure to a soft drink, under experimental conditions, resulting in a significant difference between the initial pre-thermocycling weight in each piece and the final weight obtained after the process, which demonstrates the negative effect of the consumption of soft drinks. In that same sense, and as part of this research, the beneficial effects of probiotics such as L-alanine were evaluated as a supplement for beneficial bacteria for oral health such as Lactobalilos rhamnosus GG, which manage to stop the advance of pathogenic and opportunistic bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans. The results showed that as the concentration of the probiotic increases, the decrease in the number of colony-forming units and biofilms of Streptococcus mutans is greater. In addition, the research addresses the perception of risk in students, of ingestion of soft drinks in dental erosion and the criteria that their tutor teachers have on the subject(AU)

Caffeine is the most common psychoactive substance available to adults, as well as to children and adolescents. The safety of its use in younger age groups requires further research. The aim of this study was to evaluate caffeine intake, to identify products and drinks that are the main sources of caffeine intake in the diet of the subjects and the risk of excessive caffeine intake with the diet of adolescents, stratified by gender. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 508 adolescents aged 16-18 years from southern Poland. Black tea, cola-based soft drinks and milk chocolate were the most frequently consumed products containing caffeine in the diet of the examined persons. The average caffeine intake was 95.54 mg/day (1.54 mg/kg b.w.). In 12.2% of the subjects the dose of 3 mg/kg b.w./day was exceeded, and in over 41.3% the dose causing sleep disorders was exceeded. The dose causing anxiety was also exceeded in 18.1% of the respondents, significantly more often in girls than boys (p = 0.0487).
