BACKGROUND: Pulse examination, which reveals information about bodily qi and blood circulation, is an essential diagnostic tool in traditional Chinese medicine. Capillary refill time (CRT) is a simple test parameter for assessing circulation status. Examining the root of pulse and measuring CRT are extremely similar procedures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of acupuncture on CRT. METHODS: Three acupoints were selected to evaluate the effects of CRT. CRT, quantitative CRT, heart rate, core body temperature, and blood pressure were measured before acupuncture and immediately after removal of needles and 30 min after removal of needles. A total of 15 healthy adults representing both sexes were prospectively included in the study. The acupoints selected were bilateral Taixi (KI3), Hegu (LI4), and Zusanli (ST36). Each participant received acupuncture three times, interventions were separated by at least 2 days, and acupuncture was performed on only one acupoint at each intervention. RESULTS: CRT decreased significantly after acupuncture on only KI3. Quantitative CRT decreased significantly after acupuncture on KI3 and LI4. Heart rate changed significantly after acupuncture on KI3 and ST36. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture on KI3 can reduce CRT in health adults.

Although endurance exercise training promotes angiogenesis and improves metabolic health, the effect of resistance training on this process is less well defined. We hypothesized that capillarization would increase proportionally, and concurrently, with muscle fiber hypertrophy in response to resistance training in young men. METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized control trial, 36 men (22 ± 1 yr) were randomized to placebo or protein supplementation, and participated in 12 wk of resistance training. Skeletal muscle biopsies were collected before and after 2, 4, 8, and 12 wk of training. Immunohistochemistry assessed fiber type-specific size and capillarization. Western blot and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assessed proteins involved in the molecular regulation of angiogenesis. RESULTS: Resistance training effectively increased Type I (15% ± 4%; P < 0.01) and Type II fiber cross-sectional area (28% ± 5%; P < 0.0001), an effect that tended to be further enhanced with protein supplementation in Type II fibers (P = 0.078). Capillary-to-fiber ratio significantly increased in Type I (P = 0.001) and II (P = 0.015) fibers after 12 wk of resistance exercise training and was evident after only 2 wk. Capillary-to-fiber perimeter exchange index increased in the Type I fibers only (P = 0.054) after 12 wk of training. Training resulted in a reduction in vascular endothelial growth factor mRNA. A (P = 0.008), while vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (P = 0.016), hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (P = 0.016), and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (P = 0.01) increased in both groups. Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α protein content was higher in the protein group (main group effect, P = 0.02), and endothelial nitric oxide synthase content demonstrated a divergent relationship (time-group interaction, P = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS: This study presents novel evidence that microvascular adaptations and the molecular pathways involved are elevated after 2 wk of a 12-wk resistance training program. Increases in muscle fiber cross-sectional area are effectively matched by the changes in the microvasculature, providing further support for resistance training programs to optimize metabolic health.

KEY POINTS: ß-Adrenergic receptor agonists such as isoproterenol induce cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating in humans, but the mechanisms underpinning this response remain unresolved. Using intradermal microdialysis, we evaluated the roles of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX) in ß-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating elicited by administration of isoproterenol. We show that while NOS contributes to ß-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation, COX restricts cutaneous vasodilatation. We also show that combined inhibition of NOS and COX augments ß-adrenergic sweating These new findings advance our basic knowledge regarding the physiological control of cutaneous blood flow and sweating, and provide important and new information to better understand the physiological significance of ß-adrenergic receptors in the skin. ABSTRACT: ß-Adrenergic receptor agonists such as isoproterenol can induce cutaneous vasodilatation and sweating in humans, but the mechanisms underpinning this response remain unresolved. We evaluated the hypotheses that (1) nitric oxide synthase (NOS) contributes to ß-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation, whereas cyclooxygenase (COX) limits the vasodilatation, and (2) COX contributes to ß-adrenergic sweating. In 10 young males (25 ± 5 years), cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and sweat rate were evaluated at four intradermal forearm skin sites infused with (1) lactated Ringer solution (control), (2) 10 mm Nω -nitro-l-arginine (l-NNA), a non-specific NOS inhibitor, (3) 10 mm ketorolac, a non-specific COX inhibitor, or (4) a combination of l-NNA and ketorolac. All sites were co-administered with a high dose of isoproterenol (100 µm) for 3 min to maximally induce ß-adrenergic sweating (ß-adrenergic sweating is significantly blunted by subsequent activations). Approximately 60 min after the washout period, three incremental doses of isoproterenol were co-administered (1, 10 and 100 µm each for 25 min). Increases in CVC induced by the first and second 100 µm isoproterenol were attenuated by l-NNA alone, and those in response to all doses of isoproterenol were reduced by l-NNA with co-infusion of ketorolac (all P ≤ 0.05). Ketorolac alone augmented increases in CVC induced by 10 µm and by the second 100 µm isoproterenol (both P ≤ 0.05). While isoproterenol-induced sweating was not affected by the separate administration of l-NNA or ketorolac (all P > 0.05), their combined administration augmented sweating elicited by the first 3 min of 100 µm isoproterenol (P = 0.05). We show that while NOS contributes to ß-adrenergic cutaneous vasodilatation, COX restrains the vasodilatation. Finally, combined inhibition of NOS and COX augments ß-adrenergic sweating.

Alterations of the skin microvasculature are known to play an important role in the development and maintenance of psoriatic skin lesions. In this study, we investigated lesional skin in 11 psoriatic patients during a modified Goeckerman treatment using reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) to study the relationship between clinical clearance and histological normalization of psoriatic skin and the significance of histological abnormalities on the course of disease. The treatment regimen resulted in a significant reduction of the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) as well as capillary and papillary diameters (p < 0.0001). The capillary and papillary diameters were still enlarged when compared to those in normal skin (p < 0.001). Capillary and papillary diameters correlated with each other prior to and after treatment (correlation coefficient = 0.63 and 0.64, p = 0.01 and 0.002, respectively) but not with the PASI. Capillary and papillary diameters after treatment and percentage reduction of the PASI during treatment seemed to be better predictors for the clinical course of relapse than the PASI after treatment. These findings make the subclinical changes of psoriatic skin vessels and dermal papillae a legitimate target for treatment. Further investigations of a large group of patients are needed to evaluate the potential of RCM findings as successor of the PASI in the monitoring of psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Dietary creatine supplementation (CrS) is a practice commonly adopted by physically active individuals. However, the effects of CrS on systemic microvascular reactivity and density have never been reported. Additionally, CrS is able to influence blood levels of homocysteine, resulting in presumed effects on vascular endothelial function. Thus, we investigated the effects of CrS on the systemic microcirculation and on homocysteine levels in healthy young individuals. METHODS: This open-label study was performed on a group of 40 healthy male, moderately physically active subjects aged 27.7 ± 13.4 years who received one week of CrS at a dose of 20 g/day of commercially available micronized creatine monohydrate. Laser speckle contrast imaging was used in the evaluation of cutaneous microvascular reactivity, and intra-vital video microscopy was used to evaluate skin capillary density and reactivity, before and after CrS. RESULTS: CrS did not alter plasma levels of homocysteine, although CrS increased creatinine (p = 0.0001) and decreased uric acid (p = 0.0004) plasma levels. Significant changes in total cholesterol (p = 0.0486) and LDL-cholesterol (p = 0.0027) were also observed along with a reduction in plasma levels of T3 (p = 0.0074) and an increase in T4 levels (p = 0.0003). Skin functional capillary density (p = 0.0496) and capillary recruitment during post-occlusive reactive hyperemia (p = 0.0043) increased after CrS. Increases in cutaneous microvascular vasodilation induced by post-occlusive reactive hyperemia (p = 0.0078) were also observed. CONCLUSIONS: Oral supplementation with creatine in healthy, moderately physically active young adults improves systemic endothelial-dependent microvascular reactivity and increases skin capillary density and recruitment. These effects are not concurrent with changes in plasma homocysteine levels.

In the course of a screening program for the inhibitors of angiogenesis from marine sources, AD0157, a pyrrolidinedione fungal metabolite, was selected for its angiosupressive properties. AD0157 inhibited the growth of endothelial and tumor cells in culture in the micromolar range. Our results show that subtoxic doses of this compound inhibit certain functions of endothelial cells, namely, differentiation, migration and proteolytic capability. Inhibition of the mentioned essential steps of in vitro angiogenesis is in agreement with the observed antiangiogenic activity, substantiated by using two in vivo angiogenesis models, the chorioallantoic membrane and the zebrafish embryo neovascularization assays, and by the ex vivo mouse aortic ring assay. Our data indicate that AD0157 induces apoptosis in endothelial cells through chromatin condensation, DNA fragmentation, increases in the subG1 peak and caspase activation. The data shown here altogether indicate for the first time that AD0157 displays antiangiogenic effects, both in vitro and in vivo, that are exerted partly by targeting the Akt signaling pathway in activated endothelial cells. The fact that these effects are carried out at lower concentrations than those required for other inhibitors of angiogenesis makes AD0157 a new promising drug candidate for further evaluation in the treatment of cancer and other angiogenesis-related pathologies.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory, toning and draining effect of the Deep Oscillation® device. The Deep Oscillation® device uses the forces of pulsed electrostatic attraction and friction to provoke oscillations that act on the epidermis, dermis, and sub-cutaneous layers of tissue. An ex-vivo study was first completed by using a model of skin maintained in survival condition. The draining and anti-inflammatory effects of the device were determined by pro-inflammatory cytokine assay and by histological analysis of capillary dilation. The analgesic effectiveness of the Deep Oscillation® was then evaluated by immunohistochemical analysis of TRPV1. To corroborate this data, a clinical study was conducted by selecting 20 subjects with periorbital bags or dark circles to undergo treatment with the device. Evaluations included photography, dermatological scores as well as ultrasound analysis. Using an ex-vivo model of human skin maintained in survival condition, the Deep Oscillation® device was effective in reducing inflammation with a significant reduction of dilated capillaries and IL8, while lowering sensory receptor levels. Clinically, the device was successful in reducing both dark circles and bags by an average of 40%.

SIGNIFICANCE: Proangiogenic therapy appeared a promising strategy for the treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI), as de novo formation of microvessels, has the potential to salvage ischemic myocardium at early stages after MI, and is also essential to prevent the transition to heart failure through the control of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and contractility. RECENT ADVANCES: Exciting preclinical studies evaluating proangiogenic therapies for MI have prompted the initiation of numerous clinical trials based on protein or gene transfer delivery of growth factors and administration of stem/progenitor cells, mainly from bone marrow origin. Nonetheless, these clinical trials showed mixed results in patients with acute MI. CRITICAL ISSUES: Even though methodological caveats, such as way of delivery for angiogenic growth factors (e.g., protein vs. gene transfer) and stem/progenitor cells or isolation/culture procedure for regenerative cells might partially explain the failure of such trials, it appears that delivery of a single growth factor or cell type does not support angiogenesis sufficiently to promote cardiac repair. FUTURE DIRECTIONS: Optimization of proangiogenic therapies might include stimulation of both angiogenesis and vessel maturation and/or the use of additional sources of stem/progenitor cells, such as cardiac progenitor cells. Experimental unraveling of the mechanisms of angiogenesis, vessel maturation, and endothelial cell/cardiomyocyte cross talk in the ischemic heart, analysis of emerging pathways, as well as a better understanding of how cardiovascular risk factors impact endogenous and therapeutically stimulated angiogenesis, would undoubtedly pave the way for the development of novel and hopefully efficient angiogenesis targeting therapeutics for the treatment of acute MI.

BACKGROUND: Medullary blood flow is via vasa recta capillaries, which possess contractile pericytes. In vitro studies using isolated descending vasa recta show that pericytes can constrict/dilate descending vasa recta when vasoactive substances are present. We describe a live kidney slice model in which pericyte-mediated vasa recta constriction/dilation can be visualized in situ. METHODS: Confocal microscopy was used to image calcein, propidium iodide and Hoechst labelling in 'live' kidney slices, to determine tubular and vascular cell viability and morphology. DIC video-imaging of live kidney slices was employed to investigate pericyte-mediated real-time changes in vasa recta diameter. RESULTS: Pericytes were identified on vasa recta and their morphology and density were characterized in the medulla. Pericyte-mediated changes in vasa recta diameter (10-30%) were evoked in response to bath application of vasoactive agents (norepinephrine, endothelin-1, angiotensin-II and prostaglandin E(2)) or by manipulating endogenous vasoactive signalling pathways (using tyramine, L-NAME, a cyclo-oxygenase (COX-1) inhibitor indomethacin, and ATP release). CONCLUSIONS: The live kidney slice model is a valid complementary technique for investigating vasa recta function in situ and the role of pericytes as regulators of vasa recta diameter. This technique may also be useful in exploring the role of tubulovascular crosstalk in regulation of medullary blood flow.

In traditional Chinese medicine, hot- and cold-attribute of food ingredients are a major part of dietary therapy. The aim of this study was to establish a suitable scientific methodology to define the attributes of food ingredients by investigating the relationship between food attributes and the physiological signals produced in healthy young subjects with different constitutions. Thirty subjects were grouped into hot and cold constitutions by Chinese medical doctors. Every subject took water, aged ginger tea and coconut water, which are well recognized as having neutral-, hot- and cold-attribute, respectively, on different visits. The different physiological signals induced by the samples were observed using skin and axillary temperature sensors, a heart rate variability analyzer and a laser Doppler anemometer. We found that the capillary red blood cell (RBC) velocity in nail fold microcirculation (NFM) of the subjects with hot constitution accelerated significantly after taking the hot-attribute aged ginger tea, which might be the result of elevated vagal activity leading to arteriole dilation in these subjects. In contrast, in subjects with cold constitution, capillary RBC velocity decelerated significantly and skin temperature decreased markedly after taking the cold-attribute coconut water, which might have been induced by sympathetic nerve activation causing the arteriole to be constricted. Accordingly, the use of capillary RBC velocity of NFM measured by laser Doppler anemometer may be a promising way to classify attributes of food ingredients commonly used in Chinese medicine dietary therapy in accordance with different personal constitutions.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the effects of Nd:YAG laser irradiation combined with different irrigation protocols on the marginal seal of root fillings. BACKGROUND DATA: Limited information exists regarding the effects of morphologic changes to root canal (RC) walls after Nd:YAG laser irradiation after smear-layer removal with EDTA on the sealing ability of root fillings. METHODS: The 75 root-filled teeth (5 × 15 teeth) were analyzed for through-and-through leakage by using capillary flow porometry (CFP). The RC cleaning procedure determined the assignment to a group: (1) irrigation with NaOCl 2.5% and EDTA 17% or standard protocol (SP), (2) SP + Nd:YAG lasing (dried RC), (3) NaOCl 2.5% + Nd:YAG lasing (dried RC), (4) SP + Nd:YAG lasing (wet RC), or (5) NaOCl 2.5% + Nd:YAG lasing (wet RC). Groups 1r to 5r consisted of the same filled teeth with resected apices up to the most apical point of the preparation length. Resection was performed after the first CFP measurement. Roots were filled with cold lateral condensation. CFP was used to assess minimum, mean flow and maximum pore diameters after 48 h, and immediately after these measurements, including root resection. Statistics were performed by using nonparametric tests (p > 0.05). An additional three roots per group were submitted to SEM of the RC wall. RESULTS: Through-and-through leakage was observed in all groups. Statistically significant differences were observed in maximum pore diameter: 1r > 3r, and 1r > 5r; in mean flow pore diameter: 1r > 2r, 2r < 4r (p < 0.05). Typical Nd:YAG glazing effects were observed when the smear layer was present and exposed to the laser fiber (i.e., in the groups without use of EDTA) or when the fiber tip made direct contact with a smear-layer free RC wall. CONCLUSIONS: The reduction in through-and-through leakage is significantly higher with the Nd:YAG laser as smear-layer modifier than when smear layer is removed with an EDTA rinsing solution.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate possible correlations between fingertip blood perfusion (FBP) status, assessed by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF), and morphological microvascular abnormalities, detected by nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC), in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). The effects on FBP of intravenous (IV) treatment with the prostacyclin analog iloprost were also investigated. METHODS: Thirty-four consecutive patients with SSc and 16 healthy subjects were evaluated. LDF was performed by analyzing blood perfusion at the fingertips in both hands. Patients with SSc were distributed into the appropriate NVC pattern of microangiopathy (early, active, and late). Iloprost was administered to inpatients with SSc by 24-hour IV infusion for 7 consecutive days (4 microg/h). RESULTS: FBP was significantly lower in patients with SSc (p < 0.05) compared to controls. Heating of the LDF probe at 36 degrees C induced a significant increase of FBP in all subjects (p < 0.001), but the slope of variation was significantly lower in patients with SSc compared to controls (p < 0.05). Patients with SSc showing the late NVC pattern of microangiopathy had significantly lower FBP than patients with the active and early NVC patterns (p < 0.05). A negative correlation was observed between FBP and NVC rating of the microvascular damage (p < 0.05). After iloprost treatment, a significant increase of FBP was observed in patients with SSc (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Patients with SSc show a decreased FBP partially reversible by local skin heating. The FBP correlated negatively with the extent of nailfold microvascular damage, and IV iloprost treatment increased the FBP.

BACKGROUND: acupuncture is a therapeutic technique currently used in the treatment of many pathologies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential effect of acupuncture on "in vivo" variations in oral microcirculation in healthy subjects. METHODS: an exploratory study was conducted on 40 healthy subjects: 20 cases (mean 55.90, SD 16.04) and 20 controls (mean 51, SD 11.91). Videocapillaroscopy was used to detect variations in oral microcirculation. This method permits an accurate and non-invasive in vivo study of the capillaries of the oral mucous. The site selected for this pilot study is the lower lip since it is the simplest to investigate and is more readily accessible. Assessments were carried out in three phases: t(0) before the application of the needles; t(1) one minute after the application; t(2) five minutes after the application; similar time points were used for the control group. Data were compared using the Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS: the study showed characteristic changes in oral microcirculation induced by acupuncture. The tortuousness of capillary loops and in the diameter of the afferent loop changed significantly (p<0.05) over time in the acupuncture group but not in the controls. CONCLUSIONS: the findings lend support to our expectation that acupuncture may generate significant variations in oral microcirculation in healthy adults. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and evaluate the therapeutic role of acupuncture in oral pathologies.

Ageing is associated with impaired endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO) function in human microvessels. We investigated the impact of cardiorespiratory fitness and exercise training on physiological and pharmacological NO-mediated microvascular responses in older subjects. NO-mediated vasodilatation was examined in young, older sedentary and older fit subjects who had two microdialysis fibres embedded into the skin on the ventral aspect of the forearm and laser Doppler probes placed over these sites. Both sites were then heated to 42 degrees C, with Ringer solution infused in one probe and N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) through the second. In another study, three doses of ACh were infused in the presence or absence of L-NAME in similar subjects. The older sedentary subjects then undertook exercise training, with repeat studies at 12 and 24 weeks. The NO component of the heat-induced rise in cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) was diminished in the older sedentary subjects after 30 min of prolonged heating at 42 degrees C (26.9 +/- 3.9%CVC(max)), compared to older fit (46.2 +/- 7.0%CVC(max), P < 0.05) and young subjects (41.2 +/- 5.2%CVC(max), P < 0.05), whereas exercise training in the older sedentary group enhanced NO-vasodilator function in response to incremental heating (P < 0.05). Similarly, the NO contribution to ACh responses was impaired in the older sedentary versus older fit subjects (low dose 3.2 +/- 1.3 versus 6.6 +/- 1.3%CVC(max); mid dose 11.4 +/- 2.4 versus 21.6 +/- 4.5%CVC(max); high dose 35.2 +/- 6.0 versus 52.6 +/- 7.9%CVC(max), P < 0.05) and training reversed this (12 weeks: 13.7 +/- 3.6, 28.9 +/- 5.3, 56.1 +/- 3.9%CVC(max), P < 0.05). These findings indicate that maintaining a high level of fitness, or undertaking exercise training, prevents age-related decline in indices of physiological and pharmacological microvascular NO-mediated vasodilator function. Since higher levels of NO confer anti-atherogenic benefit, this study has potential implications for the prevention of microvascular dysfunction in humans.

The antitumour activity of a medicinal mushroom Phellinus linteus (PL), through the stimulation of immune system or the induction of apoptosis, has been recently described. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for the inhibition of invasive behaviour of cancer cells remain to be addressed. In the present study, we demonstrate that PL inhibits proliferation (anchorage-dependent growth) as well as colony formation (anchorage-independent growth) of highly invasive human breast cancer cells. The growth inhibition of MDA-MB-231 cells is mediated by the cell cycle arrest at S phase through the upregulation of p27(Kip1) expression. Phellinus linteus also suppressed invasive behaviour of MDA-MB-231 cells by the inhibition of cell adhesion, cell migration and cell invasion through the suppression of secretion of urokinase-plasminogen activator from breast cancer cells. In addition, PL markedly inhibited the early event in angiogenesis, capillary morphogenesis of the human aortic endothelial cells, through the downregulation of secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor from MDA-MB-231 cells. These effects are mediated by the inhibition of serine-threonine kinase AKT signalling, because PL suppressed phosphorylation of AKT at Thr(308) and Ser(473) in breast cancer cells. Taken together, our study suggests potential therapeutic effect of PL against invasive breast cancer.

The circumventricular organs are small sized structures lining the cavity of the third ventricle (neurohypophysis, vascular organ of the lamina terminalis, subfornical organ, pineal gland and subcommissural organ) and of the fourth ventricle (area postrema). Their particular location in relation to the ventricular cavities is to be noted: the subfornical organ, the subcommissural organ and the area postrema are situated at the confluence between ventricles while the neurohypophysis, the vascular organ of the lamina terminalis and the pineal gland line ventricular recesses. The main object of this work is to study the specific characteristics of the vascular architecture of these organs: their capillaries have a wall devoid of blood-brain barrier, as opposed to central capillaries. This particular arrangement allows direct exchange between the blood and the nervous tissue of these organs. This work is based on a unique set of histological preparations from 12 species of mammals and 5 species of birds, and is taking the form of an atlas.

Acupuncture has been used widely to treat disease; however, the time course for acupuncture to have an effect remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the time course of changes in nail fold microcirculation (NFM) induced by acupuncture stimulation (AS) at the right and left Waiguan acupoints (WAs). A total of 38 healthy female volunteers, age range from 21 to 33, were studied. We recorded NFM of the right middle finger before, and 5 min, 10 min, 15 min and 20 min after initiating AS; NFM was also recorded 5 min and 10 min after secessions of AS. Nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin-1 levels were measured from the left cubital vein, before AS and 10 min after stopping AS. The results indicated that capillary density of NFM increased 5 min after AS at the right Waiguan acupoint (WA); however, similar changes were not noted at the left WA. The capillary density decreased beginning 15 min after AS at the right and left WA. Capillary red blood cell velocity increased 5 min and 10 min after AS at the right and left WAs, but decreased 5 min and 10 min after stopping AS at the left WA. NO and endothein-1 levels were similar before AS and 10 min after stopping AS. Therefore, we suggest that a segmental effect of the spinal nerve contributes to the increasing capillary density of NFM induced by AS. The effect of acupuncture on NFM lasts about 10-15 min. The changes of balance between the sympathetic nerve activities and parasympathetic nerve activities may be induced by AS.

The methanol soluble fraction of the leaves of Buddleia scordioides after column chromatography resulted in the isolation of two known iridoid glucosides, catalpol and methylcatalpol. The structures were elucidated by extensive 1D-2D-NMR spectroscopy. The structure of methylcatalpol was confirmed by single-crystal x-ray diffraction. These compounds showed protective activity against increased (both chloroform and histamine) skin vascular permeability in rabbits. The protective effect was measured as the reduction in leakage of Evans blue. The results showed that the iridoids produced a significant inhibition of microvascular permeability. A comparison was made between the action of the iridoids and a known inhibitor of vascular permeability, troxerutin (50 mg/kg). Methylcatalpol and catalpol were found to be less effective than troxerutin.
