RESUMO

This study is the first to report the characterization of Carex pumila genomic information. Assembly of the genome generated a draft of C. pumila based on PacBio Sequel II and Illumina paired-end sequencing, which was assembled from 2941 contigs with an estimated genome size of 0.346 Gb. The estimate of repeats in the genome was 31.0%, and heterozygosity ranged from 0.426 to 0.441%. The integrity evaluation of the assembly revealed 1481 complete benchmarked universal single-copy orthologs (BUSCO) (91.76%), indicating the high quality of the draft assembly. A total of 23,402 protein-coding genes were successfully predicted and annotated in the protein database. UpsetR plots showed that 7481 orthogroups were shared by all species. The phylogenetic tree showed that C. pumila is a close but distant relative of Ananas comosus. C. pumila had greater contraction (3154) than expansion (392). Among the extended gene families, aquaporins have been found to be enriched. Primers for microsatellite markers determined 30 polymorphic markers out of 100. The average number of alleles amplified by these 30 polymorphic markers was 4 to 12, with an average polymorphism information content (PIC) value of 0.660. In conclusion, our study provides a useful resource for comparative genomics, phylogeny, and future population studies of C. pumila.

RESUMO

Over recent decades, there has been a severe nitrogen-deposition in alpine meadows which often leads to phosphorus limitation of plant productivity. In these high-altitude localities, Cyperaceae have an increasing biomass while other functional groups decrease. Meanwhile, Cyperaceae are known to have the ability of producing dauciform roots, which are formed under phosphorus limitation, but in China, are only described in these high-altitude places. So, is the superiority of Cyperaceae and the formation of dauciform roots in high-altitude localities related to the accumulation of nitrogen? And is there a link between them? A Carex filispica dominated community in Baima Snow Mountain was selected and quantitative fertilization with four levels of nitrogen and three levels of phosphorus was performed. After 2 weeks, Carex filispica individuals with and without dauciform roots were separated and analyzed for their regular root properties, dauciform root properties, biomass and chemical traits of above- and belowground parts. The total cover of the community declined under phosphorus limitation with increasing nitrogen supply, while the relative cover difference of Carex filispica increased with increasing nitrogen supply and decreased with increasing phosphorus supply. Dauciform roots had a more significant response to nitrogen supply than to phosphorus supply and they were formed the most at a low supply of nitrogen. The biomass and root properties of individuals with dauciform roots were enhanced by nitrogen supply and inhibited by phosphorus supply, while those of individuals without dauciform roots were often enhanced by phosphorus supply. Individuals with and without dauciform roots showed two different mechanisms, and were limited by significantly different factors, which can explain the opposite performance of Cyperaceae after nitrogen and phosphorus supply in previous studies.

RESUMO

Carex communities in most Yangtze-disconnected lakes have been degraded severely due to alterations in water level fluctuations. To explore the feasibility of restoring the lakeshore Carex communities through ecological regulation of water level, the present study selected the Yangtze-connected Qili Lake (the lakeshore was dominated by Carex) and the Yangtze-disconnected Wuchang Lake (the lakeshore was dominated by Zizania latifolia) as model systems, and analyzed the lakeshore seed bank characteristics and seed-related quantitative, morphological, and germination traits of three representative Carex species. According to the results, although Carex seed density in the Qili Lake seed bank was obviously higher than that in Wuchang Lake, their contribution to the total seed density in both lakes was extremely low, with no significant difference between the two lakes. The results indicate that restoration of the degraded Carex communities using existing seed bank in Yangtze-disconnected lakes exclusively through water level regulation is not feasible. In addition, the seed densities of aboveground parts of Carex cinerascens, Carex dimorpholepis, and Carex argyi in Qili Lake were 6.9 × 104, 45.1 × 104, and 3.6 × 104 seeds/m2, respectively, which can provide high numbers of seeds continuously for lakeshore Carex restoration. The results of seed germination experiments showed that light, burial depth, and their interaction had significant effects on seed germination of the three species, whereas water condition had a significant effect only on C. dimorpholepis seed germination. The average germination rates of the three Carex species were 16.63 %, 19.06 %, and 7.78 %, respectively. However, considering the high seed densities in the aboveground parts of the three species, there are considerable numbers of seeds that can be used for Carex restoration. Therefore, the restoration of Carex communities in lakeshore zones of Yangtze-disconnected lakes is still possible if water level regulation can be combined with natural or artificial seed supplementation.

RESUMO

Based on a field water table drawdown manipulation platform of Naleqiao marsh on the Rueorgai Plateau, we lifted in situ soil block of 1 m×1 m by 20 cm for simulating water table decline, and analyzed the response of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stoichiometry in the wetland species Carex muliensis from June to September 2020. The results showed that there was no significant difference in leaf C content during the whole growing season, while N and P content gra-dually decreased along the growing season. After the drawdown of water table, the C content in leaves during the growing season was not consistent. Water table drawdown increased leaf C content in the early and middle growth stages, but changed little in the peak growth stage. Water table drawdown significantly increased leaf N content, while significantly decreased leaf P content. C:N, C:P, and N:P for leaves all increased along the whole growing period. The relative growth rate of C. muliensis was positively correlated with leaf C:N, but negatively correlated with leaf C:P and N:P. Water table drawdown significantly decreased leaf C:N, while significantly increased leaf C:P and N:P, which significantly reduced the relative growth rate of C. muliensis. The decrease of foliar P content induced by water table drawdown was the main regulating factor for the decrease of single leaf weight and specific leaf weight.

RESUMO

Ground- and surface-water-fed peatlands (i.e., fens) of temperate Europe face high anthropogenic nutrient loads from atmospheric deposition, agricultural catchment areas, and from peat decomposition, if drained. As a result, nitrogen loads may exceed a fen's natural nutrient removal capacity, leading to increased eutrophication of adjacent water bodies. Therefore, it is important to address possible means to decrease a fen's nutrient load, including nutrient uptake by fen plants. To assess how much fen plants can contribute to nutrient removal by uptake, nutrient stocks of above- and below-ground biomass need to be quantified. Therefore, we investigated nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium uptake capacities of sedges (Carex species), which are common dominants in fen plant communities. We grew specimens of five Carex species with varying preferences in nutrient availability under controlled, different nutrient levels. We show that Carex above-ground biomass harvest can remove up to one third of a system's total nitrogen even at high loads of about 40 g nitrogen m-2. Species-specific differences in biomass production, rather than preferences in nutrient availability under natural conditions, were drivers of standing nutrient stocks: Highly productive species, i.e., C. acutiformis and C. rostrata, had highest nutrient standing stocks across all nutrient levels. Amounts of nutrients stored in shoots increased almost linearly with increasing nutrient levels, whereas below-ground nutrient stocks species-specifically increased, saturated, or decreased, with increasing nutrient levels. As a rough estimate, depending on the species, 6-16 cycles of annual above-ground harvest would suffice to decrease nitrogen concentrations from the highest to the lowest level used in this study. Overall, our results indicate that Carex biomass harvest can be an efficient means to counteract anthropogenic nitrogen eutrophication in fens.

RESUMO

Staphylococcus aureus is currently a significant multidrug-resistant bacterium, causing severe healthcare-associated and community-acquired infections worldwide. The current antibiotic regimen against this pathogen is becoming ineffective due to resistance, in addition, they disrupt the normal microbiota. It highlights the urgent need for a pathogen-specific drug with high antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus. α-Viniferin, a bioactive phytochemical compound, has been reported to have excellent anti-Staphylococcus efficacy as a topical agent. However, so far, there were no clinical trials that have been conducted to elucidate its efficacy. The present study aimed to investigate the antibacterial efficacy of α-viniferin against S. aureus in a ten-day clinical trial. Based on the results, α-viniferin showed 50% minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC50 values) of 7.8 µg/ml in culture broth medium. α-Viniferin was administered in the nares three times a day for ten days using a sterile cotton swab stick. Nasal swab specimens were collected before (0 days) and after finishing the trial (10th day), and then analyzed. In the culture and RT-PCR-based analysis, S. ureus was reduced significantly: 0.01. In addition, 16S ribosomal RNA-based amplicon sequencing analysis showed that S. aureus reduced from 51.03% to 23.99% at the genus level. RNA-seq analysis was also done to gain insights into molecular mechanisms of α-viniferin against S. aureus, which revealed that some gene groups were reduced in 5-fold FC cutoff at two times MIC conditions. The study results demonstrate α-viniferin as a potential S. aureus-specific drug candidate.

RESUMO

Ecological stoichiometric should be incorporated into management and nutrient impacted ecosystems dynamic to understand the status of ecosystems and ecological interaction. The present study focused on ecological stoichiometric characteristics of soil, and leaves, stems, and roots of different macrophytes after the banning of seine fishing in Shengjin Lake. For C, N, and P analysis from leaves, stems, roots, and soil to explore their stoichiometric ratio and deriving environmental forces, four dominant plant communities (Vallisneria natans, Zizania latifolia, Trapa natans and Carex schmidtii) were collected. The concentration of C, N, P and C: N: P ratio in leaves, stems, roots, and soil among the plant communities varied significantly. Along the depth gradient high C: N was measured in C.schmidtii soil (7.08±1.504) but not vary significantly (P >0.05). High C: P result was found in T.natans (81.14±43.88) and in V.natans soil (81.40±42.57) respectively with no significant difference (p>0.05). Besides, N: P ratio measured high in V. natans (13.7±4.05) and showed significant variation (P<0.05). High leaf C: N and N: P ratio was measured in C. schmidtii and V. natans respectively. Nevertheless, high leaf C: P ratio was measured in Z. latifolia. From the three studied organs, leaf C: N and N: P ratio showed high values compared to root and stems. The correlation analysis result showed that at 0-10cm depth soil organic carbon (SOC) correlated negatively with stem total phosphorus (STP), and root total nitrogen (RTN) (P<0.05) but positively strongly with leaf total phosphorus (LTP) and leaf total nitrogen (LTN) (P<0.01) respectively. Soil total nitrogen (STN) at 0-10cm strongly positively correlated with leaf total phosphorus (LTP) (P<0.01) and positively with RN: P and leaf total carbon (LTC) (P<0.05). Soil basic properties such as soil moisture content (SMC), bulky density (BD) and pH positively correlated with soil ecological stoichiometric characteristics. Redundancy analysis (RDA) result showed available nitrogen (AN), soil total nitrogen (STN), and available phosphorus (AP) were the potential determinants variables on plants stoichiometric characteristics.

RESUMO

Colony formation in Microcystis aeruginosa played important roles in blooms formation. To study the effects of plant allelopathy on colony formation in M. aruginosa, unicellular M. aeruginosa was cultivated under laboratory conditions treated with various extract concentration of Carex cinerascens. The growth of M. aeruginosa in the treatments with 0.05 and 0.1 mg L-1 extract of C. cinerascens was promoted but the growth in the treatments with 1.5, 3.0, and 6.0 mg L-1 C. cinerascens extract was inhibited. Obvious colony formation in M. aeruginosa was observed in all treatments while no colony formation was detected in the control. The cell number per colony at the first day was the largest and decreased along with culture time. The cell number per colony in the control ranged from 3.0 to 4.0 during the experiment. However, the values in the five treatments at the first day were 33, 80, 58, 41, and 30, respectively. A positive exponential relationship between cell number per colony of M. aeruginosa and extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) content was found as well. Compared the fold-increase in cell number per colony and the fold-increase in total biomass of M. aeruginosa at various day, it was found that colony formation induced by extract of C. cinerascens was primarily dependent on promotion of cell adhesion during the first 2 days. The cell number per colony decreased afterward was due to the increasing proportion of single cells in the culture because single cells had a great higher growth rate than M. aeruginosa colonies under culture condition. Our results suggested that plant allelopathy be one of the major factor contributing to colony formation in M. aeruginosa.

RESUMO

This study compared plant growth, nutrient partitioning and total nutrient uptake by tall sedge (Carex appressa) plants in large-scale Constructed Floating Wetlands (CFWs). Two CFWs with a total area of 2088 m2 were installed in a 2.6 ha man-made urban lake to treat stormwater runoff during the construction phase of a 45-ha residential development. After 12 months of operation, parts of the CFWs, with a total area of 147 m2, were removed from the urban lake and relocated into a well-established 0.127-ha stormwater retention pond at another site. Biomass and nutrient concentrations of C. appressa shoots above the floating mat and roots below the mat were analysed at both sites 12, 16 and 25 months after initial planting. Plants at the urban lake maintained an extensive root network but there was no increase in total plant biomass at 16 and 25 months after planting. In contrast, the relocated plants in the stormwater pond showed extensive shoot growth but a significant decline in root biomass. C. appressa at the urban lake removed and sequestered 1.00 ±â€¯1.04 g m-2 N, 0.11 ±â€¯0.07 g m-2 P and 1.03 ±â€¯0.81 g m-2 K while plants at the pond removed 11.20 ±â€¯2.29 g m-2 N, 1.37 ±â€¯0.26 g m-2 P and 16.13 ±â€¯2.88 g m-2 K during 12 and 25 months after planting. This study demonstrated that C. appressa adapted rapidly to changes in nutrient availability. The implications are interesting as nutrient levels can be low in constructed lakes during the initial phase of urban developments but can increase rapidly as the development progresses. The study demonstrated multiple benefits of CFWs for stormwater treatment during the early construction stages of an urban development and the potential benefits of relocating and establishing CFWs in existing stormwater retention ponds and lakes.

RESUMO

The feasibility of using floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) to treat runoff typical of commercial nurseries was investigated using two 8-week trials with replicated mesocosms. Plants were supported by Beemat rafts. Five monoculture treatments of Agrostis alba (red top), Canna × generalis 'Firebird' (canna lily), Carex stricta (tussock sedge), Iris ensata 'Rising Sun' (Japanese water iris), Panicum virgatum (switchgrass), two mixed species treatments, and an unplanted control were assessed. These plant species are used for ornamental, wetland, and biofuel purposes. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removals were evaluated after a 7-day hydraulic retention time (HRT). N removal (sum of ammonium-N, nitrate-N, and nitrite-N) from FTW treatments ranged from 0.255 to 0.738 g·m-2·d-1 (38.9 to 82.4% removal) and 0.147 to 0.656 g·m-2·d-1 (12.9 to 59.6% removal) for trials 1 and 2, respectively. P removal (phosphate-P) ranged from 0.052 to 0.128 g·m-2·d-1 (26.1 to 64.7% removal) for trial 1, and 0.074 to 0.194 g·m-2·d-1 (26.8 to 63.2% removal) for trial 2. Panicum virgatum removed more N and P than any other FTW treatment and the control in both trials. Results show that species selection and timing of FTW harvest impact the rate and mass of nutrient remediation. FTWs can effectively remove N and P from runoff from commercial nurseries.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Forage nutritive value plays an important role in livestock nutrition and maintaining sustainable grassland ecosystems, and grazing management can affect the quality of forage. In this study, we investigated the effects of different grazing intensities on the nutritive values of Leymus chinensis (Trin.) Tzvelev, Artemisia spp. and Carex duriuscula C. A. Mey in the steppes of China during the growing seasons from 2011 to 2013. Five grazing management treatments were implemented: (1) rest grazing in spring, heavy grazing in summer and moderate grazing in autumn (RHM), (2) rest grazing in spring, moderate grazing in summer and heavy grazing in autumn (RMH), (3) heavy grazing though all seasons (HHH), (4) heavy grazing in spring and summer and moderate grazing in autumn (HHM) and (5) continuous moderate grazing in all seasons (MMM). RESULTS: There were significant effects of year, season, treatment, and year × season and year × treatment interactions only on the crude protein of L. chinensis (P < 0.05). The crude protein concentrations of L. chinensis in the plots of constant high grazing pressure (HHH) and reduced grazing pressure in the last grazing stage (HHM) were higher than with deferred grazing (RMH and RHM, P < 0.05) in spring from 2011 to 2012. For Artemisia spp. and C. duriuscula, the crude protein concentration in HHH was higher than that in RMH (P < 0.05) in the summer of 2011. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) for ether extract, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and Ca concentration for any of the grasses in spring and summer from 2011 to 2013 under the different grazing management treatments. CONCLUSIONS: The nutritive value of L. chinensis was more responsive to grazing disturbance than Artemisia spp. and C. duriuscula, and heavy grazing maintained a relatively high crude protein content in all species. Seasonal and interannual seasonal differences in grazing management combinations were two of the most important factors in determining the variability of forage nutritive value, including crude protein, ether extract, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and calcium, for L. chinensis, Artemisia spp. and C. duriuscula. We suggest that moderate grazing should be adopted to ensure the quality and yield of forage and promote the sustainable development of animal husbandry.

RESUMO

Salt stress is a major abiotic stress threatening plant growth and development throughout the world. In this study, we investigated the salt stress adaptation mechanism of Carex rigescens (Franch.) V. Krecz, a stress-tolerant turfgrass species with a wide distribution in northern China. Specifically, we analyzed the growth, physiology, and transcript expression patterns of two C. rigescens genotypes (Huanghua and Lvping No.1) exposed to salt stress. Results show that Huanghua demonstrated better growth performance, and higher turf quality (TQ), photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), relative water content (RWC), proline content, and lower relative electrolyte leakage (REL) during seven days of salt treatment compared to Lvping No.1, suggesting that Huanghua is more salt tolerant. Significant differences in reactive oxygen species (ROS), Malondialdehyde (MDA), melatonin, non-enzymatic antioxidants, lignin, and flavonoid content, as well as in antioxidant activity between Huanghua and Lvping No.1 after salt stress indicate the diverse regulation involved in salt stress adaptation in C. rigescens. These results, combined with those of the transcript expression pattern of involved genes, suggest that Huanghua is more active and efficient in ROS scavenging, Ca2+ binding, and its phytohormone response than Lvping No.1. Meanwhile, Lvping No.1 showed relatively higher phenylpropanoid synthesis, using flavonoid and lignin as supplements for the inadequate ROS-scavenging capacity and the development of vascular tissues, respectively. These performances illustrate the differences between the two genotypes in multifaceted and sophisticated actions contributing to the tolerance mechanism of salt stress in C. rigescens. In addition, the significantly higher content of melatonin and the rapid induction of Caffeic acid O-methyltransferase (COMT) highlight the role of melatonin in the salt stress response in Huanghua. The results of our study expand existing knowledge of the complexity of the salt stress response involving the antioxidant system, Ca2+ signaling, phytohormone response signaling, and phenylpropanoid pathways. It also provides a basis for further study of the underlying mechanism of salt tolerance in C. rigescens and other plant species.

RESUMO

Root structures secreting carboxylates and phosphatases are thought to enhance a plant's phosphorus (P) acquisition. But do closely related species with and without such structures really differ in root exudation, P mobilization, or ecological niche? We investigated this by comparing 23 European Carex species with and without 'dauciform roots' (DRs). Plants grown in pots with sand were screened for DR formation, phosphatase activities, carboxylate exudation, and utilization of various organic and inorganic P compounds. Ecological niches were compared using ecological indicator values and nutrient concentrations of plant shoots in natural habitats. Species of subgenus Carex formed DRs, while species of subgenus Vignea did not. Species with DRs had higher root diesterase activity than species without DRs, exuded more citrate but less oxalate and less total carboxylates, and allocated less biomass to roots. Species with and without DRs showed similar growth responses to different forms of P and different amounts of P supplied; their natural habitats do not differ in soil fertility or degree of P limitation. Despite some differences in physiological function, DRs did not influence the P acquisition and nutritional niche of European Carex species, suggesting that species with and without DRs do not exhibit distinct P-acquisition strategies.

RESUMO

We examined foliar nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) stoichiometry of 3 wetland plants (Phalaris arundinacea, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, and Carex brevicuspis) distributed along an elevation gradient in the Dongting Lake, China, and how this stoichiometry is related to soil physico-chemical characteristics, elevation, and flooding days. Plant and soil samples were collected from 3 lakeshore sites. Total N and P concentrations of plants and six physico-chemical characteristics of the soil were measured, in addition to the elevation and flooding days. P. arundinacea and M. sacchariflorus had higher total N and P concentrations than C. brevicuspis. The foliar N:P ratio decreased with increasing elevation, and only increased with increasing foliar total N concentration. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that the foliar stoichiometry was primarily regulated by soil water content, followed by soil nutrient concentration. The foliar N and P stoichiometry of the 3 wetland plants was insignificantly correlated with soil total P concentration. However, foliar stoichiometric characteristics and soil total N concentration significantly differed among the 3 species. These results demonstrate that spatial variation of foliar stoichiometry in wetland plants exists along an elevation gradient, with this information being useful for the conservation and management of wetland plants in this lake.

RESUMO

Naturally derived compounds represent a potential source of pharmacologically active drugs able to contrast different diseases, including gastric cancer, a multifactorial disease, in which the important role played by H. pylori infection has been demonstrated. Carexanes, stilbene derivatives, isolated from plants of the Carex distachya Desf., are unusual secondary metabolites with a tetracyclic skeleton arising from a cyclization of prenylstilbenoid precursors. In this study we firstly showed the ability of three purified carexanes CxB, CxG, and CxI to enhance the antioxidant response of AGS cells and to contrast the effect of the H. pylori's protein HspB. Among them CxI was the molecule that best modified the expression of genes involved in the antioxidant response. In particular, CxI was able to reduce Keap-1 gene expression and induce NQO1 gene expression, both at 4 and 24 h in AGS cells, as showed by real time PCR. Nrf2 induction was evident only at 24 h. Interestingly, the effect of CxI was stronger in HspB-transfected AGS cells, where Keap-1 gene expression was nearly abrogated. Finally, we demonstrated that CxI was able to reduce also COX-2 gene expression in HspB-transfected AGS cells, compared with untreated HspB-transfected cells, both at 4 and 24 h. This study first report that carexanes might represent candidate molecules able to contrast the deleterious effect of HspB protein but also to reduce the inflammatory process induced by H. pylori infection.

RESUMO

The trade-off between allocation to sexual and clonal reproduction in clonal plants is influenced by a variety of environmental factors; however, it has rarely been examined under field conditions. In this study, we investigated the trade-off between two modes of reproduction in Carex brevicuspis C. B. Clarke across a small-scale elevational gradient (21-27 m a.s.l.) at the Dongting Lake wetlands, China. The proportion of biomass allocated to and the density of reproductive ramets were higher at low than at intermediate and high elevations. In contrast, the proportion of biomass allocated to and the density of rhizome buds were lower at low than at intermediate and high elevations. Redundancy analysis showed that sexual reproduction was positively correlated with soil moisture content, soil organic matter, total phosphorus, and pH, and negatively correlated with elevation and ramet density. Our findings suggested that allocation to sexual reproduction is favored in disturbed habitats with fertile soils, whereas allocation to vegetative propagation is favored in stable and competitive habitats. Trade-off between allocation to sexual reproduction and vegetative propagation along an elevational gradient might be a reproductive strategy of C. brevicuspis to adapt to the water level fluctuations in wetland habitats.

RESUMO

Two new phenolics, a stilbenoid, vulpinoideol A (1), and a chalcone, vulpinoideol B (2), along with ten known compounds (3-12) were isolated from Carex vulpinoidea Michx. seeds. The structures of compounds 1-12 were elucidated based on spectrometric and spectroscopic analyses including HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR data. All compounds were evaluated for their tyrosinase enzyme inhibitory activities.

RESUMO

Carwashes are highly water-consuming processes that require wastewater treatment before discharge into a sewer system due to the complex composition of leachate. Anionic surfactants (AS) are the main constituents of this wastewater because of their cleaning and solubilization properties; they can be potentially dangerous for the environment if not adequately treated. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are low-cost systems increasingly used to treat different types of wastewater; however, there are few studies on their use for the treatment of carwash wastewater. In this study, an innovative constructed wetland arranged in a "cascade" to simulate a wall system (WCCW) was experimented in 2010 and 2011 to treat AS. Three plant species were tested at different AS inlet concentrations (10, 50, and 100 mg L(-1)) with two hydraulic retention times (HRTs; 3 and 6 days): ribbon grass (Typhoides arundinacea (L.) Moench (syn. Phalaris arundinacea L.) var. picta; Ta), water mint (Mentha aquatica L.; Ma), and divided sedge (Carex divisa Hudson; Cd). All plant species grew constantly over the experimental period, showing a capacity to tolerate even the highest AS concentration. Using the HRT of 6 days, raising the inlet concentration increased the AS outlet concentration, with similar values for the treatments (median values of 0.13-0.15, 0.47-0.78, and 1.19-1.46 mg L(-1) at inlet concentrations in the order 10, 50, and 100 mg L(-1)). The shorter HRT led to significant differences among treatments in the reduction of outlet concentration, the best result being given by the tanks vegetated with Ma (A = 97.7 % with outlet concentration 0.35 mg L(-1)). After treatments of the WCCW, the AS content was reduced almost completely, with removal in the ranges 0.07-10.2 g m(-2) day(-1) for tanks planted with Ta, 0.10-9.1 g m(-2) day(-1) for Ma tanks, and 0.11-9.5 g m(-2) day(-1) for Cd tanks depending on the inlet concentration.

RESUMO

Anthelmintic resistance against most of the commercial drugs is a great threat to humans as well as the veterinary live stocks. Hence, new treatment strategies to control helminth infections are essential at this hour. Carex baccans Nees has been traditionally used by Jaintia tribes in Northeast India to get rid of intestinal worm infections. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate in vivo cestocidal activity of root tuber extract of C. baccans and its active component resveratrol against the zoonotic cestode Hymenolepis diminuta in the experimental model rat. The cestocidal activity was determined by monitoring the eggs per gram (EPG) counts in faeces of different treated groups. The result showed that the highest dose of the plant extract (50 mg/kg) and resveratrol (4.564 mg/kg body weight) has significant anthelmintic efficacy against H. diminuta. Crude extract of the plant as well as resveratrol reduced EPG count (56.012 and 46.049 %) and also resulted in decreased worm burden by 44.287 and 31.034 %, respectively. The efficacy of the crude extract and resveratrol can be compared to the reference drug praziquantel. The results exhibits considerable cestocidal potential of root tuber crude extract of C. baccans and resveratrol and justify its folklore use.

RESUMO

Profile distribution characteristics of organic carbon (C), total nitrogen (N), total phosphorus (P) and total sulfur (S) were studied in two typical marshes including Carex lasiocarpa marsh and Phragmites australis marsh in the Sanjiang Plain. Sedimentary characteristics of typical mashes were analyzed. The results showed that vertically these soil chemical elements also varied, showing obvious stratification and enrichment. In a soil profile, soil organic C under both vegetation communities gradually decreased; soil total N first increased and then decreased under both; total P under Carex lasiocarpa first decreased and then increased, whereas it decreased with the increasing depth under Carex lasiocarpa; total S was reduced with increasing depth under both marshes. Total N, total P and total S were all strongly correlated with soil organic C (P < 0.01); soil organic C was strongly correlated with bulk density (P < 0.01). Our study also illustrated that the vegetation types had different influences for organic C, total N, total P and total S of the marsh profiles. Environmental 137Cs and 210Pb dating techniques were applied to determine recent sedimentation rates, and the constant rate of supply (CRS) was applied to deduce the age of sediment core, and the results showed that the mean sedimentation rate was 0.33 cm x a(-1), and the sedimentation fluxes ranged 0.03-0.48 g x (cm2 x a)(-1) [Mean = 0.29 g x (cm2 x a) -1].
