Collagen and its peptides are natural ingredients used in food supplements and nutricosmetics with the claim of providing benefits for skin health and beauty. In this context, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of oral supplementation with hydrolyzed fish cartilage for the improvement of chronological and photoaging-induced skin changes. A total of 46 healthy females aged 45 to 59 years were enrolled and divided into two groups: G1-placebo and G2-oral treatment with hydrolyzed fish cartilage. Measurements of skin wrinkles, dermis echogenicity and thickness, and morphological and structural characteristics of the skin were performed in the nasolabial region of the face before and after a 90-day period of treatment using high-resolution imaging, ultrasound, and reflectance confocal microscopy image analyses. A significant reduction in wrinkles and an increase of dermis echogenicity were observed after a 90-day period of treatment with hydrolyzed fish cartilage compared to the placebo and baseline values. In addition, reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) image analysis showed improved collagen morphology and reduced elastosis after treatment with hydrolyzed fish cartilage. The present study showed the clinical benefits for the skin obtained with oral supplementation with a low dose of collagen peptides from hydrolyzed fish cartilage.

Restoring homeostasis following tissue damage requires a dynamic and tightly orchestrated sequence of molecular and cellular events that ensure repair and healing. It is well established that nutrition directly affects skin homeostasis, while malnutrition causes impaired tissue healing. In this study, we utilized fish sidestream-derived protein hydrolysates including fish collagen as dietary supplements, and investigated their effect on the skin repair process using a murine model of cutaneous wound healing. We explored potential differences in wound closure and histological morphology between diet groups, and analyzed the expression and production of factors that participate in different stages of the repair process. Dietary supplementation with fish sidestream-derived collagen alone (Collagen), or in combination with a protein hydrolysate derived from salmon heads (HSH), resulted in accelerated healing. Chemical analysis of the tested extracts revealed that Collagen had the highest protein content and that HSH contained the great amount of zinc, known to support immune responses. Indeed, tissues from mice fed with collagen-containing supplements exhibited an increase in the expression levels of chemokines, important for the recruitment of immune cells into the damaged wound region. Moreover, expression of a potent angiogenic factor, vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), was elevated followed by enhanced collagen deposition. Our findings suggest that a 5%-supplemented diet with marine collagen-enriched supplements promotes tissue repair in the model of cutaneous wound healing, proposing a novel health-promoting use of fish sidestreams.

ABSTRACT: Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDSv) can present with life-threatening surgical complications. The article describes the case of a patient with EDSv who developed total abdominal wound dehiscence and multiple enterocutaneous fistulas. Treatment with IV allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and high-dose vitamin C was trialed with success. Near-complete wound healing of the abdominal dehiscence with a 94% reduction in the size of the wound bed occurred. Maturation of the enterocutaneous fistulas also ensued.There is no current consensus on the management of large cutaneous wounds in EDSv. This article discusses the pathophysiology of wound healing with regard to nutrition requirements and growth factors with special reference to collagen deficits in EDSv. A potential therapy with IV vitamin C supplementation and MSCs is proposed following the patient's positive outcome. Medium-dose MSCs and high-dose IV vitamin C may offer significant benefits to complex and problematic wounds.

The collagen gel droplet-embedded drug sensitivity test (CD-DST) was revealed to be useful for predicting the effect of S-1 adjuvant chemotherapy for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, collection of an adequate number of PDAC cells is difficult due to the surrounding fibroblasts. Thus, the aim of this study was to discover novel biomarkers to predict chemosensitivity based on the CD-DST results. Proteomics analysis was performed using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Candidate proteins were validated in patients with 5-FU CD-DST results via immunohistochemistry (IHC). The relationships between the candidate proteins and the effect of the adjuvant S-1 were investigated via IHC. Among the 2696 proteins extracted by LC-MS/MS, C1TC and SAHH could accurately predict the CD-DST results. Recurrence-free survival (RFS) was significantly improved in the IHC-positive group compared with the IHC-negative group in both factors. The negative group did not show a significant difference from the group that did not receive S-1. The double-positive group was associated with significantly prolonged RFS compared to the no adjuvant chemotherapy group. C1TC and SAHH have been shown to be useful biomarkers for predicting 5-FU sensitivity as a substitute for the CD-DST in adjuvant chemotherapy for PDAC.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of bacterial- mediated plasminogen (PLG) activation in the pathogenesis of anastomotic leak (AL) and its mitigation by tranexamic acid (TXA). BACKGROUND: AL is the most feared complication of colorectal resections. The pathobiology of AL in the setting of a technically optimal procedure involves excessive submucosal collagen degradation by resident microbes. We hypothesized that activation of the host PLG system by pathogens is a central and targetable pathway in AL. METHODS: We employed kinetic analysis of binding and activation of human PLG by microbes known to cause AL, and collagen degradation assays to test the impact of PLG on bacterial collagenolysis. Further, we measured the ability of the antifibrinolytic drug TXA to inhibit this process. Finally, using mouse models of pathogen-induced AL, we locally applied TXA via enema and measured its ability to prevent a clinically relevant AL. RESULTS: PLG is deposited rapidly and specifically at the site of colorectal anastomoses. TXA inhibited PLG activation and downstream collagenolysis by pathogens known to have a causal role in AL. TXA enema reduced collagenolytic bacteria counts and PLG deposition at anastomotic sites. Postoperative PLG inhibition with TXA enema prevented clinically and pathologically apparent pathogen-mediated AL in mice. CONCLUSIONS: Bacterial activation of host PLG is central to collagenolysis and pathogen-mediated AL. TXA inhibits this process both in vitro and in vivo. TXA enema represents a promising method to prevent AL in high-risk sites such as the colorectal anastomoses.

Althaea officinalis (AO) is reported to have the ability to activate fibroblasts as well as anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. Herein, we investigated the effects of this herbal medicine on wound healing in rat models by using stereological methods. In this experiment, 48 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups randomly (n = 12): the control group with no treatment, the gel-base treated group, 5% and 10% AO-gel treated groups. The treatments were administered every 24 hours. Wound closure rate, volume densities of collagen bundles, hair follicles, and vessels, vessel's length density and mean diameter, and fibroblast populations were estimated. Fibroblast populations, hair follicles, and mean diameter of vessels in the dermis of AO-treated groups were noticeably higher than those of control and base groups. Also, collagen bundles synthesis was significantly higher in the AO10%-treated group compared to the control and base groups. According to our research and previous studies, AO has the potential to be considered as an alternative medicine in wound healing treatment; however, further clinical investigations are suggested.

CONTEXT: Bambara groundnut (BG), originally from Africa, is widely distributed in Asian countries, especially in southern Thailand, and is used for food and functional foods. There is no report on the use of BG for ethnomedicine or cosmetics. OBJECTIVE: To investigate collagen biosynthesis stimulation and anti-melanogenesis of the BG extracts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The hulls (H) and seeds (S) of BG were collected from Trang province, Thailand and extracted by Soxhlet (S) and maceration (M) using ethanol, and boiled with distilled-water (B). Total phenolic (TPC) and total flavonoid (TFC) contents were quantified. The three antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibition activities were determined by DPPH, FIC and FTC; and the modified dopachrome methods, respectively. The collagen biosynthesis and the anti-melanogenesis activities were investigated by Sirius-Red and the melanin content assay. RESULTS: The yields of BG extracts ranged from 1.72% to 9.06%. The BG-SS extract gave the highest TPC and TFC. The BG-HM extract showed the highest antioxidant activities (SC50 of 0.87 ± 0.02 mg/mL, MC50 of 1.83 ± 0.09 mg/mL and LC50 of 0.70 ± 0.06 mg/mL), tyrosinase inhibition activity (IC50 of 0.45 ± 0.23 mg/mL), and anti-melanogenesis activities (72.9 ± 0.08%), whereas the BG-SB extract exhibited the highest stimulation of collagen biosynthesis (18.04 ± 0.03%). All BG extracts at 0.1 mg/mL showed no cytotoxicity on human dermal fibroblasts. DISCUSSION: The biological activities of BG extracts might be from their phytochemicals, especially phenolic and flavonoid contents. CONCLUSION: The BG-HB and BG-HM extracts might be promising novel active sources for anti-aging and whitening cosmeceuticals.

This study examined whether a polyphenol-rich extract from the berries of Aronia melanocarpa L. (AE; chokeberries) may protect from the impact of cadmium (Cd) on the metabolism of collagen in the liver. The study was conducted in an experimental model (rats that were fed a diet containing 1 or 5 mg Cd/kg for 3-24 months) of human exposure to this xenobiotic during a lifetime. The concentration of total collagen and the expression of collagen types I and III at the mRNA and protein levels, as well as the concentrations of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1 and MMP-2) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2), were assayed. The administration of Cd and/or AE had only a slight and temporary impact on the concentration of total collagen in the liver. The supplementation with AE significantly prevented Cd-mediated changes in the expression of collagen types I and III at the mRNA and protein levels and their ratio (collagen III/collagen I), as well as a rise in the concentrations of MMPs and TIMPs in this organ. The results allow the conclusion that the intake of chokeberry products in the case of Cd intoxication may be effective in prevention from this xenobiotic-induced disturbance in collagen homeostasis in the liver.

Disordered collagen production by fibroblasts in response to tissue injury contributes to pulmonary fibrosis (PF). Therefore, elimination of collagen deposition has becoming a potential target in PF treatment which despite standard anti-fibrosis regiment still remains challenge. Curcumin and curcumol are regarded as the main active components extraction from the rhizomes of Curcuma zedoaria, which is widely used for inhibition the proliferation of multiple cells. However, the molecular basis for the function of curcumin and curcumol in limiting fibrogenesis still unknown. In this study, we have investigated the effects of curcumin and curcumol in the fibroblast overproliferation model human lung fibroblast (HLF) inducing by TGF-ß1. The growth-inhibitory effects of the components wasn't observed from 8 to 64 µg/ml. Administration of curcumin or curcumol significantly diminished the level of hydroxyproline hydroxyproline and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), also the collagen Ⅰ (Col-Ⅰ) and collagen Ⅲ (Col-Ⅲ) deposition were reduced in the HLF. Furthermore, related to the collagen synthesis proteins including N-terminal pro-peptide for Type Ⅰ collagen (PⅠNP), N-terminal pro-peptide for Type Ⅲ collagen (PⅢNP) and prolyl-hydroxylase (PHD) were degraded gracefully at dose-dependent manner. Autophagy as the scavenger was crippled in TGF-ß1-fibroblast overproliferation HLF, conversely the increased autophagosomes have been spotted in cytoplasm under transmission electron microscope which is consistent with up-regulation of Beclin1 and ATG7 after treatment with curcumin or curcumol in this study. Additionally, blocking autophagy by inhibitor chloroquine (CQ) caused collagen deposition, providing further evidence regard to autophagy activation capacity of curcumin and curcumol. Our findings provide a detailed understanding that the function of curcumin and curcumol on decreasing collagen deposition mediating by autophagy mechanism, which may also inspire the further research on PF at different perspectives.

Bone and teeth are derived from intrafibrillarly mineralized collagen fibrils as the second level of hierarchy. According to polymer-induced liquid-precursor process, using amorphous calcium phosphate precursor (ACP) is able to achieve intrafibrillar mineralization in the case of bone biomineral in vitro. Therefore, ACP precursors might be blended with any osteoconductive scaffold as a promising bone formation supplement for in-situ remineralization of collagens in bone. In this study, mesoporous silica nanoparticles with carboxyl-functionalized groups and ultra large-pores have been synthesized and used for the delivery of liquid like biomimetic precursors (ACP). The precursor delivery capacity of the nanoparticles was verified by the precursor release profile and successful mineralization of 2D and 3D collagen models. The nanoparticles could be completely degraded in 60 days and exhibited good biocompatibility as well. The successful translational strategy for biomineralization precursors showed that biomineralization precursor laden ultra large pore mesoporous silica possessed the potential as a versatile supplement in demineralized bone formation through the induction of intrafibrillar collagen mineralization.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Orostachys japonicus A. Berger (O. japonicus), so-called Wa-song in Korea, a traditional food and medicine that grows on mountain rocks and roof tiles. Wa-song containing various phenolic compounds have been reported as a medicinal plant for prevention of fibrosis, cancer, inflammation, and oxidative damage. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study was designed to examine the anti-angiogenic effects of cultivated Orostachys japonicus 70% ethanol extract (CE) in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-stimulated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: CE was prepared with 70% ethanol. HUVECs, rat aortic rings, and matrigel plug in mice were treated with CE (10-20 µg/mL) and VEGF (20-50 ng/mL), and the anti-angiogenic activities of CE were analyzed by SRB, wound healing, trans-well invasion, capillary-like tubule formation, rat aortas, Western blot, and matrigel plug assay. Phenolic compounds in CE were analyzed using a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-PDA system. RESULTS: Treatment of CE (10-20 µg/mL) markedly suppressed proliferation of HUVECs in the presence (from 136.5% to 112.2%) or absence of VEGF (from 100.0% to 92.1%). The proliferation inhibitory effect of CE was caused by G0/G1 cell cycle arrest, and the decrease of CDK-2, CDK-4, Cyclin D1 and Cyclin E1. Furthermore, CE treatment showed significant angiogenesis inhibitory effects on motility, invasion and micro-vessel formation of HUVECs, rat aortic rings and subcutaneous matrigels under VEGF-stimulation condition. In HUVECs, CE-induced anti-angiogenic effect was regulated by inhibition of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR, MAPK/p38, MAPK/ERK, FAK-Src, and VEGF-VEGFR2 signaling pathways. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that CE might be used as a potential natural substance, multi-targeted angiogenesis inhibitor, functional food material.

BACKGROUND: Manipulating intestinal microbiota with probiotics might stimulate skin response. Understanding all stages of the healing process, as well as the gut-skin-healing response can improve the skin healing process. AIM: To evaluate the effect of perioperative oral administration of probiotics on the healing of skin wounds in rats. METHODS: Seventy-two Wistar male adult rats were weighed and divided into two groups with 36 each, one control group (supplemented with oral maltodextrin 250 mg/day) and one probiotic group (supplemented with Lactobacillus paracasei LPC-37, Bifidobacterium lactis HN0019, Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001, Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM® at a dose of 250 mg/day), both given orally daily for 15 days. The two groups were subsequently divided into three subgroups according to the moment of euthanasia: in the 3rd, 7th and 10th postoperative days. RESULTS: There were no significant changes in weight in both groups. Wound contraction was faster in probiotic group when compared to the controls, resulting in smaller wound area in the 7th postoperative day. As for histological aspects, the overall H&E score was lower in the probiotic group. The probiotic group showed increased fibrosis from 3rd to the 7th postoperative day. The type I collagen production was higher in the probiotic group at the 10th postoperative day, and the type III collagen increased in the 7th. CONCLUSION: The perioperative use of orally administrated probiotic was associated with a faster reduction of the wound area in rats probably by reducing the inflammatory phase, accelerating the fibrosis process and the deposition of collagen.

AIM: We investigated the effects of Ba-Wei-Die-Huang-Wan (BWDHW) on ketamine-induced cystitis (KIC) in a rat model. METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats were distributed into three groups: control (saline), ketamine (25 mg/kg/day for 28 days), or ketamine (25 mg/kg/day for 28 days) plus BWDHW (90 mg/kg/day, started from day 14). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), metabolic cage study, and cystometry were evaluated. Bladder histology was evaluated. Western blots of the bladder proteins were carried out. RESULTS: Compared with controls, ketamine-treated rats showed stronger fMRI intensity in the periaqueductal gray area and bladder overactivity in the bladder functional study, but the ketamine/BWDHW-treated rats did not. Furthermore, ketamine breached the uroplakin III membrane at the apical surface of the urothelium, enhanced substance P spread over the urothelium, induced suburothelial hemorrhage and monocyte/macrophage infiltration, and caused interstitial fibrosis deposition. By contrast, the BWDHW-treated rats exhibited less substance P spread, lower suburothelial monocyte/macrophage infiltration, and lower interstitial fibrosis deposition. The ketamine group showed significant overexpression of neuroreceptors in the bladder mucosa (the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 and M2 - and M3 -muscarinic receptors) and detrusor (M2 - and M3 -muscarinic receptors); inflammatory mediators in the detrusor (interleukin-1ß [IL-1ß], IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, nuclear factor-κB, cyclooxygenase-2, and intercellular adhesion molecule-1); and fibrogenesis molecules in the detrusor (transforming growth factor-ß1, collagen I, collagen III, and fibronectin). However, no significant changes were noted between the ketamine/BWDHW and control groups. CONCLUSION: BWDHW could exert therapeutic effects by inhibiting the upregulation of neuroreceptors, modulating inflammatory mediators, suppressing fibrogenesis, and ameliorating bladder overactivity in rats with KIC.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To report our initial experience in the treatment of Acanthamoeba keratitis with accelerated corneal collagen cross-linking. Methods: Retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed with Acanthamoeba keratitis with progressive corneal melting who were treated with accelerated collagen cross-linking. Results: A total of 6 eyes (5 patients) were reviewed. All the patients received adjuvant therapy with moxifloxacin and chlorhexidine. In 4 cases, the ulcer healed with a mean interval to epithelialization of 108.8 days (range 59-217). In 2 eyes, there was a persistent neurotrophic ulcer. The melting was not progressive in any case, nor did any eye required emergency penetrating keratoplasy. Conclusion: This study suggests a beneficial effect of accelerated collagen cross-linking in cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis with corneal melting. Thus, collagen cross-linking may be considered as adjuvant treatment for Acanthamoeba keratitis.


RESUMO Objetivo: Relatar nossa experiência inicial no tra tamento da ceratite por Acanthamoeba com reticulação acelerada de colágeno corneano. Métodos: Revisão retrospectiva de prontuários de pacientes diagnosticados com ceratite por Acanthamoeba, com deformação progressiva da córnea, tratados com reticulação acelerada de colágeno. Resultados: Seis olhos (5 pacientes) foram incluídos. Todos os pacientes receberam terapia adjuvante com moxifloxacina e clorexidina. Em 4 casos, a úlcera cicatrizou com uma média de epitelização de 108,8 dias (amplitude de 59-217 dias). Em dois pacientes, a úlcera apresentou um comportamento neurotrófico. A deformação não foi progressiva em nenhum dos pacientes e nenhum dos olhos exigiu ceratoplastia penetrante de emergência. Conclusão: Este estudo sugeriu um efeito benéfico da reticulação acelerada de colágeno em casos de ceratite por Acanthamoeba infecciosa com deformação corneal. A reticulação de colágeno parece ser uma alternativa coadjuvante possível para casos de ceratite por Acanthamoeba.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of gallium-aluminum-arsenium (GaAlAs) (670 nm) laser therapy on neoangiogenesis and fibroplasia during tissue remodelling. Forty male Wistar rats underwent cutaneous surgery and were divided into 2 experimental groups: the Control and Laser group (9 mW, 670 nm, 0.031 W/cm2 , 4 J/cm2 ). After 14, 21, 28, and 35 days, the animals were euthanised. Descriptive and quantitative analyses were performed in sections stained with haematoxylin-eosin and Sirius Red, respectively. The amounts of VEGF+ and CD31+ cells were evaluated by immunohistochemistry and histomorphometric analysis, respectively. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney, Friedman, and Spearman correlation test, P < 0.05. The collagen expression was significantly higher in the laser group compared with the control group on days 14 and 21 after the creation of the skin wound (P = 0.008; P = 0.016) and in the control group between 14 and 28 and 14 and 35 days (P = 0.001; P = 0.007). There were more blood vessels in three periods of the study only in the (Laser) treated group, with statistical significance at day 14 (P = 0.016). There was no statistically significant difference in VEGF+ cell count in the different experimental groups throughout the study, although a positive correlation was shown with the area of collagen on days 14 and 28 (P = 0.037). Laser treatment had a positive effect in the late course of healing, particularly with regards to collagen expression and the number of newly formed vessels. VEGF+ cells were present in both experimental groups, and VEGF appeared to influence fibroplasia in the treated group.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of sonic irrigation (EndoActivator® ) using various polymer tips and power settings in a stained collagen ex vivo model. METHODOLOGY: The root canals of fifty human, straight single-rooted extracted teeth were prepared to size 40, .08 taper. The roots were split longitudinally; stained collagen applied to the canal surfaces, photographed and re-assembled. The canals were subjected to syringe without supplementary (group 1, n = 10) or with supplementary sonic (groups 2-5, n = 10) irrigation. EndoActivator® tip sizes (size 15, .02 taper for groups 2 and 3; size 35, .04 taper for groups 4 and 5) and power settings (low for groups 2 and 4; high for groups 3 and 5) were tested. After irrigation, the canals were re-photographed and the area of residual stained collagen was quantified using the UTHSCA Image Tool program (Version 3.0). The data were analysed using Wilcoxon signed rank test and general linear mixed models. RESULTS: Supplementary sonic irrigation using EndoActivator® resulted in significantly (P < 0.0001) less residual collagen compared with syringe irrigation only. Agitation of irrigant using the large EndoActivator® tip with high power resulted in significantly less (22.4% - 29.5%) residual collagen compared to other combinations (large tip/low power P = 0.001; small tip/low power P = 0.01; small tip/high power P = 0.04). There was no significant difference amongst the latter three groups (P > 0.5). CONCLUSIONS: Supplementary sonic irrigation using the EndoActivator® system was significantly more effective in removing stained collagen from the canal surface than syringe irrigation alone. EndoActivator® used with large tip (size 35, .04 taper) and high power setting in size 40, .08 taper canals was more effective than other combinations.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Cranberry and Grape seed-enriched extract gels in inhibiting wear and degradation of demineralized organic matrix (DOM). DESIGN: 225 dentin specimens obtained from bovine incisors were randomly allocated into 5 groups (n=45): 10% Grape seed extract gel (GSE), 10% Cranberry extract gel (CE), 0.012% Chlorhexidine gel (CX), 1.23% NaF gel (F), and no active compound gel (P, placebo). Before the treatments, samples were demineralized by immersion in 0.87M citric acid, pH 2.3 (36h). Then, the studied gels were applied once over dentin for 1min. Next, the samples were immersed in artificial saliva containing collagenase obtained from Clostridium histolyticum for 5days. The response variable for dentin wear was depth of dentin loss measured by profilometry and for collagen degradation was hydroxyproline determination. Data were analyzed by ANOVA followed by Tukey's test and Pearson Correlation Test (p<0.05). RESULTS: Grape seed extract significantly reduced dentin wear compared to the other groups (p<0.05). Cranberry extract and Chlorhexidine did not differ statistically and were able to reduce wear when compared to NaF and placebo treatments. The hydroxyproline analysis showed that there was no significant difference among groups for all treatments (p<0.05). Correlation analysis showed a significant correlation between the amount of degraded DOM evaluated by profilometry and the determination of hydroxyproline. CONCLUSION: Cranberry extract was able to reduce the dentin wear and collagen degradation, likely due to the proanthocyanidin content and its action. Therefore, Cranberry could be suggested as an interesting natural-based agent to prevent dentin erosion.

Statistical significance was determined using a Chi-square and Pearson Correlation qualitative variables test. Moreover, Mann-Whitney U-test test for comparison between different groups of the same cell, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's test of quantitative measurement. RESULTS:: A decrease hyperemia (p < 0.001) was observed in the acute phase of inflammatory cell number (p < 0.001), whereas sub-acute phase was marked by significant correlation with macrophages in fibroblasts (r = 0.17, p = 0.03), with probable induction a dense and modeled tissue. At chronic phase, it was found an increase in the number of fibroblasts and a higher percentage of type I collagen fibers (78%) compared with control collagen fibers (55%). CONCLUSION:: Oil of Alpinia zerumbet stimulated the process of maturation, organization and tissue repair which gave it greater resistance.
