OBJECTIVES: This in vitro study evaluated the effect of different colouring solutions and primer systems used in the bonding of brackets on enamel colour change and bond strength. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 120 premolar teeth were divided into four main groups; brackets were bonded with 37% orthophosphoric acid + Transbond XT Primer in Group 1, 3 M Single Bond Universal in Group 2, Transbond Plus SEP in Group 3, and G-Premio Bond in Group 4. Each group was divided into three subgroups, and the teeth were placed in a cup containing coffee and tea mixture, in a cup containing cola and in distilled water. A bond strength test was applied to all teeth. Colour measurements of all teeth were performed at 2 different times: before bonding and after the bond strength test. RESULTS: The average bond strength of the 37% orthophosphoric acid group was higher than that of the other groups. The effect of primer and solution groups on colour change was statistically significant (p = 0.001 and p = 0.023, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the bond strength was clinically sufficient in all primer groups. The highest colour change was observed when the tea-coffee solution and Transbond Plus SEP primer were used. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study has identified enamel discoloration and bond strength from different colouring solutions and primer systems used for bonding braces, which can be used to inform clinicians and patients to achieve better treatment results.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the color stability of different commercially available silicone materials for facial prostheses upon exposure to everyday beverages. It was hypothesized that the beverages would not alter the color of the silicone under conditions simulating daily exposure. METHODS: Sixty specimens were fabricated using two materials - VST-50 and Silfy - and exposed to commercially available cold mineral water, tea, or coffee. Specimen color was evaluated on days 1 and 15. The color was measured with a spectrophotometer based on CIELab system and color differences were calculated as ΔE. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: The mean ΔE values after 15 days of exposure to mineral water, cold green tea, and coffee were 1.016, 3.480, and 3.636 for VST-50 and 0.440, 0.798, and 1.425 for Silfy, respectively. Both materials showed significant differences in color, and VST-50 showed a greater color change than Silfy, especially for coffee. CONCLUSION: Pigmented silicone elastomers have low color stability, leading to an overall color change in silicone prostheses when exposed to pigmented beverages. Color changes in such prostheses can be mitigated by selecting materials with better color stability to extend their longevity.

Due to allergenic concerns, only pea, potato, and wheat proteins have been approved as alternatives for replacing animal-based fining agents in wines. In pursuit of other substitutes, this work aimed to determine the fining ability of amaranth (Amaranthus caudatus L.) proteins (AP) in red wine, compared to quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) (QP) and a commercial pea protein. Phenolic and volatile composition, as well as color characteristics, were analyzed. AP was as effective as QP at decreasing condensed tannins, with AP at 50 g/hL being the most effective treatment (25.6% reduction). QP and AP produced a minor or no statistical change in the total anthocyanins and wine color intensity. They reduced the total ester concentration, but the total alcohols remained unchanged. The outcomes of AP and QP were similar, and sometimes better than the pea proteins, thus suggesting that they could be promising options for the development of novel fining agents.

BACKGROUND: As there is evidence showing the effects of alcohol on the surface properties of composite resins, it is of great importance to understand the effects of commonly consumed beverages on the discoloration of composite restorations in people who consume alcohol. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the color and translucency of composite resins immersed in different beverages after exposure to alcohol. METHODS: Disk-shaped samples from each composite resin (Filtek Z250 (Z250), Clearfil Majesty Esthetic (CME), and Esthelite Bulk Fill Flow (EBF), were prepared (n = 60) and randomly divided into two groups (exposed or unexposed to alcohol). The samples were immersed in distilled water, black tea, and coffee. The color parameter (∆E00) and translucency parameter (∆TP) were calculated after 24 h, 1 week, and 3 weeks. Four-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc analysis were used for the statistical analysis (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Alcohol significantly increased the discoloration of Z250 and EBF in black tea. The discoloration of CME was not affected by alcohol exposure. Z250 and EBF showed clinically unacceptable discoloration (ΔE00 > 2.25) after immersion in black tea and coffee, whereas CME showed clinically unacceptable discoloration after immersion in black tea. Black tea caused the greatest color change in all composite materials regardless of alcohol exposure. EBF showed the lowest ΔTP values (∆TP = -1.82) at 3 weeks of immersion in black tea. CONCLUSIONS: The effect of alcohol on discoloration depended on the composite type used. The translucency of bulk-fill flowable composite decreased with alcohol exposure.

This study examines the feasibility of replacing SO2 in a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wine with a green tea extract. The treatments included the control with no preservatives (C), the addition of green tea extract at 0.1 and 0.2 g/L (T1 and T2), and an SO2 treatment at 50 mg/L (T3). Five monomeric phenolic compounds were detected in the green tea extract used for the experiment, and their concentrations ranged in the order (-)-epigallocatechin gallate > (-)-epigallocatechin > (-)-epicatechin > (-)-epicatechin gallate > gallic acid. At the studied addition rates, these green tea-derived phenolic compounds contributed to ∼70% of the antioxidant capacity (ABTS), ∼71% of the total phenolic index (TPI), and âˆ¼ 84% of tannin concentration (MCPT) of the extract dissolved in a model wine solution. Among wine treatments, T1 and T2 significantly increased the wine's colour absorbance at 420 nm, MCPT, gallic acid and total monomeric phenolic content. TPI and ABTS were significantly higher in wines with preservatives (i.e., T2 > T1 â‰… T3 > C, p < 0.05). These variations were observed both two weeks after the treatments and again after five months of wine aging. Additionally, an accelerated browning test and a quantitative sensory analysis of wine colour and mouthfeel attributes were performed after 5 months of wine aging. When exposed to excessive oxygen and high temperature (50 °C), T1 and T2 exhibited ∼29% and 24% higher browning capacity than the control, whereas T3 reduced the wine's browning capacity by ∼20%. Nonetheless, the results from sensory analysis did not show significant variations between the treatments. Thus, using green tea extract to replace SO2 at wine bottling appears to be a viable option, without inducing a negative impact on the perceptible colour and mouthfeel attributes of Sauvignon Blanc wine.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of polymerization unit, polishing, and coffee thermocycling on the color and translucency of additively manufactured polyurethane-based resins with different viscosities. In addition, their color behavior was compared with the color of the shade tab throughout the fabrication steps and aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disk-shaped specimens (Ø10 × 2 mm) were fabricated from polyurethane-based resins with different viscosities (Tera Harz TC-80DP and C&B permanent; n = 30 per material). Baseline color coordinates were measured after cleaning. The specimens in each resin group were divided into three subgroups (n = 10 per subgroup) to be polymerized with different polymerization units (Otoflash G171 [FLN], Wash and Cure 2.0 [CLED1], and P Cure [CLED2]), polished, and subjected to coffee thermocycling. Color coordinates were remeasured after each process. Color differences (ΔE00) and relative translucency parameter (RTP) values were calculated. Data were statistically analyzed (α = .05). RESULTS: Time points and polymerization units affected the ΔE00 for each material (P ≤ .049). ΔE00 of each polymerization unit pair had significant differences within and among different time points within each material (P ≤ .024). ΔE00 (when compared with the shade tab) and RTP were mostly affected by polymerization units and time points within both materials (P ≤ .042). CONCLUSIONS: Tested polymerization units, polishing, and coffee thermocycling affected the color difference and translucency of tested resins. Color differences ranged from moderately unacceptable to extremely unacceptable, and the differences in translucency values mostly ranged from perceptible to unacceptable, according to previous thresholds. In addition, tested resin-polymerization unit pairs had unacceptable color differences when compared to the shade tab. CLED1 may enable higher color stability for tested resins.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of whitening toothpaste in restoring tooth color after coffee staining and its potential impact on enamel surfaces compared with regular toothpaste. METHODS: Bovine tooth enamel specimens were prepared and stained with coffee solutions before undergoing brushing simulation with different toothpaste slurries (whitening, regular, reference). For precise evaluation, spectrophotometric measurements were taken at intervals to assess color changes using the CIELAB (Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage Lab*) color space. Additionally, profilometric measurements were taken to determine the impact of toothpaste type on the roughness and abraded depth of the enamel surface. To understand the effects of toothpaste and brushing on color change, surface roughness, and abraded depth, while also considering correlations between these factors, the findings were analyzed using mixed-effects models. RESULTS: The whitening toothpaste group demonstrated the highest recovery rate (71%) after 10,000 brushstrokes, followed by the regular toothpaste group (48%) and the reference slurry group (43%). The mixed-effects model analysis revealed that the reference group had a smaller change in lightness (ΔL) than those in the regular toothpaste group. The whitening toothpaste group showed a greater change in lightness on average than those in the regular toothpaste group, with an increase in lightness as the number of brushstrokes increased. According to the roughness and abraded depth data, the whitening toothpaste group was least affected by brushing, while the reference and regular toothpaste groups showed higher levels of roughness and abraded depth at all intervals. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Gaining a thorough understanding of the effectiveness of whitening toothpaste and its impact on the enamel surface plays a crucial role in refining toothpaste formulations and advancing tooth whitening techniques in dental care.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of aging and bleaching procedures on the color stability and surface roughness of a new single-shade composite versus multi-shade composite resins. METHODS: A single-shade composite resin (Charisma Diamond One, CDO) and 3 multi-shade composite resins (Tetric NCeram, Filtek Z350 XT, Clearfil Majesty Posterior) were tested. Thirty specimens of each material were subjected to one of the aging procedures respectively: immersion in distilled water (12 days/37 °C), immersion in coffee (12 days/37 °C), or water thermocycling (10,000 cycles/5-55 °C). All specimens underwent in-office bleaching after aging. Kruskal-Wallis tests and analysis of variance were used for statistical analysis (α=0.05). RESULTS: All materials exhibited a change of color (ΔE00), translucency (RTP), whiteness (WID) and surface roughness parameters (Sa,Sv) after aging and bleaching procedures. CDO showed the highest ΔE00 among all resins with the highest RTP value, regardless of the aging procedures. Immersion in coffee led to the significantly highest ∆E00 values and lowest RTP values for nearly all resins. Positive ΔWID1 (WID(bleaching)-WID(baseline)) values were found in distilled water immersion and thermocycling groups, while negative ΔWID1 values were found in the coffee immersion group for all materials. Besides, positive ΔWID2 (WID(bleaching)-WID(aging)) values were found in all aging groups for nearly all materials. All materials showed an increasing trend in Sa and Sv after bleaching. CONCLUSIONS: CDO showed more pronounced discoloration than multi-shade composite resins. Although the whiteness of all resins increased after bleaching, none was completely restored in the coffee immersion group. Bleaching significantly increased the surface roughness of all materials. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Charisma Diamond One is more susceptible to discoloration, which may affect its long-term success rate. Bleaching could partially reduce the color change of the composite resins but did not return them completely to their original state. The roughness of the resins increased after bleaching, prompting dentists to repolish them after bleaching.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of resin infiltration treatment on enamel color stability and surface roughness after simulating daily exposure to coffee stains and regular toothbrushing with standard toothpaste. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this in vitro study, we utilized 47 caries-free human enamel specimens, which were divided into two distinct groups. The teeth in the study group underwent artificial demineralization, Icon resin infiltration, and polishing, while the control group received only polishing. Following this, all teeth from both groups were regularly immersed in freshly brewed coffee for 15 min, twice daily, over a span of 30 days. After each staining session, the teeth underwent 10 heavy circular strokes using a soft toothbrush and standard toothpaste. Color changes were measured on Days 1 and 30 using a spectrophotometer. The L*, a*, b* color system defined by the International Commission on Illumination was used to assess the changes. Surface roughness was evaluated at baseline and after 30 days using a 3D surface Metrology Microscope. RESULTS: After 30 days of immersion in coffee, both the study and control groups showed significant changes in color. However, differences were statistically significant between groups for "L" and "a" parameter but not for "b." The overall color change in the study group was higher than the control group. There were no significant differences in surface roughness within or between the groups before and after staining and brushing. CONCLUSIONS: Resin infiltration leads to a significant increase in staining compared to untreated enamel. These staining properties should be taken into account when making clinical decisions regarding the treatment of white spot lesions.

BACKGROUND: Retainers are the only effective approach to prevent orthodontic relapse. The aim of this study was to compare the changes in color and light-transmittance of rough and smooth thermoformed polyurethane and copolymer retainer samples after staining in different solutions and destaining with different approaches. METHODS: Four hundred copolyester (Essix® ACE) and 400 polyurethane (Zendura®) samples with different surface textures, smooth and rough, were stained in 4 different solutions (n = 100 per solution) over 28 days. Each of the four groups of 100 stained samples of each material was subdivided into 5 groups of 20 samples and subjected to different destaining solutions. Light transmittance and color changes were evaluated using a spectrometer and a spectrophotometer. Mean differences were compared using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and posthoc multiple comparison tests at P = 0.05. RESULTS: No significant differences in light transmittance were found between both untreated materials. Both materials were stained in a similar fashion and showed no significant differences between two materials after staining. Coffee and tea stained both materials more significantly than wine, but there was a significant difference of changes of color and light transmittance between rough and smooth surfaces during the destaining in coffee- and tea-stained samples of copolyester material. All destaining solutions were effective at removing all stains on the samples. The surface roughness of the material plays a significant role in the ability of the materials to be destained, demonstrating a more significant greater effect on cleaning rough samples for improvements in light-transmittance and greater changes in color. CONCLUSIONS: This study concluded that the surface of materials plays a significant role in the material destaining and staining. In addition, the different polymers used for retainer fabrication exhibited different responses during the destaining process depending on types of stains.

The global ornamental fish trade is expanding in response to increased demand for indigenous fish on the global market, while exogenous carotenoids can improve colouration. The 60-day trial investigated the effect of carotenoid supplementation, via Artemia, on colouration, growth and immunophysiology of Badis badis (dwarf chameleon fish). Carotenoid was enriched at 40 ppm (T1), 80 ppm (T2) and 120 ppm (T3) and compared with controls, C1 (unenriched) and C2 (oil-enriched). Fish larvae (average weight 0.12 g) were fed enriched-unenriched Artemia in triplicates (5 × 3) in aquarium tanks (15 L). C1 and T2 had better skin colour (lightness and whiteness) in the posterolateral and caudal fins respectively. The value of redness (a*) in the anterolateral region was higher in T2 and T3 (p < 0.05). The anterolateral red index was higher (p < 0.05) in T2 and T3, whereas in the posterolateral and caudal fins, T1 and T2 were higher (p < 0.05). Compared to C1 and C2, the hue angle in carotenoid groups was found to be low (p < 0.05). No significant change in the growth performance was noticed (p > 0.05). Immune scores such as lysozyme and alkaline protease were highest in T3 (p < 0.05), whereas protease activity was highest in T2 (80 ppm). Stress biomarkers, viz., superoxide dismutase, catalase and malondialdehyde were low in groups fed enriched Artemia (p < 0.05). The integrated biomarker response means and star plot area were lower in the enriched groups (T1-T3), while T2 was the lowest. Overall findings reveal that dietary carotenoid improves the colouration and immune status, but fail to promote growth. Furthermore, 80 ppm enrichment dose improves the overall performance. The findings can help fish keepers improve fish colour and health status through carotenoid supplementation.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of coffee thermocycling (CTC) on the surface roughness (Ra ) and stainability of denture base materials with different chemical compositions fabricated by using additive and subtractive manufacturing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disk-shaped specimens were additively (FREEPRINT denture, AM) or subtractively (G-CAM, GSM and M-PM, SM) fabricated from three pink denture base materials in different chemical compositions (n = 10). Ra was measured before and after polishing, while color coordinates were measured after polishing. Specimens were subjected to CTC (5000 cycles) and measurements were repeated. Color differences (ΔE00 ) after CTC were calculated. Ra among different time intervals within materials was evaluated by using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), while 1-way ANOVA was used to evaluate the Ra of different materials within each time interval and the ΔE00 values. Color coordinates within each material were compared by using paired samples t-tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Ra before polishing was the highest for all materials (p < 0.001), while SM had its lowest Ra after CTC and AM had its lowest Ra after polishing (p ≤ 0.008). Before polishing, AM had the highest Ra among the materials (p < 0.001). After polishing, SM had higher Ra than AM (p < 0.001). After CTC, GSM had the lowest Ra (p ≤ 0.048). SM had the lowest (p ≤ 0.031) and AM had the highest (p < 0.001) ΔE00 . CTC decreased the a* and b* values of SM and AM (p ≤ 0.017), and increased the L* values of AM (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Polishing significantly reduced the surface roughness of all materials. CTC did not increase the surface roughness of materials above the clinically acceptable threshold. Only AM had perceptible color change when previously reported threshold values for denture base materials were considered. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Tested denture base materials may have similar surface stability after coffee thermocycling. However, subtractively manufactured denture base materials may have improved color stability when subjected to long-term coffee consumption.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of potassium aluminum sulfate (alum) application on the stainability and translucency of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials after coffee thermocycling (CTC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disk-shaped specimens (Ø10 × 1 mm; N = 200) were fabricated by using additively (Crowntec [CT] and Varseo Smile Crown Plus [VS]) and subtractively manufactured (Brilliant Crios [RCR], CEREC Block [FC], and Vita Enamic [VE]) CAD-CAM materials and polished. All specimens were randomly divided into two groups as alum applied and control (n = 10). All specimens were then subjected to CTC (10,000 cycles at 5-55°C) and color coordinates were measured at each time interval. Color differences (ΔE00 ) and relative translucency parameters (RTPs) were calculated and the data were statistically analyzed (a = 0.05). RESULTS: Among tested time intervals, alum applied specimens had their lowest ΔE00 after alum application (p ≤ 0.006), except for FC (p = 0.177). In addition, alum applied RCR had lower ΔE00 values than its control specimens (p = 0.029). Alum applied specimens had their lowest RTP after CTC (p < 0.001) and alum application decreased the RTP of CT (p = 0.010). CTC reduced the RTP of all materials in control groups (p < 0.001). Alum applied CT had higher RTP than its control specimens (p = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS: Alum application's effect on color change varied depending on the material and alum mostly resulted in clinically acceptable changes in translucency. CTC led to unacceptable color and translucency changes based on previously reported threshold values. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Optical properties of CAD-CAM materials and the sustainability of these properties over time is critical for longevity. Alum may improve the color stability of reinforced composite resin when subjected to long-term coffee consumption.

The objectives of this study were (1) to analyse the relationship between the colour of the protectors and the outcome of 895 matches in the six Olympic Games in which taekwondo has been included, and (2) to analyse the effect of confounding factors through the different degrees of asymmetry between contestants. Data were recorded on the colour of each athlete's protectors, the scoring system, the sex of the athlete, the weight category, the round of competition, the winner of the match, the method of victory and the points scored by each athlete. Among the main results, a relationship emerged between male athletes wearing red and winning the match (p = 0.034) under the manual scoring system. There were relationships between female athletes wearing blue and winning the match in the quarterfinal (p = 0.014) and last 16 rounds (p = 0.021) using the manual and electronic scoring systems respectively. In female athletes, relationships emerged between wearing blue and winning the match with small (p = 0.008) and medium (p = 0.047) asymmetry under the manual system and with large (p = 0.036) asymmetry under the electronic system. The electronic system had a positive impact on the fairness of Olympic competition. Red tends to gain in importance as the asymmetry between the two athletes decreases, but not enough to give a competitive advantage. The results for Olympic competition held in the now concluded era of the manual system confirmed the presence of the colour effect as a result of psychological factors attributable to referees and judges.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of simplified or multi-step polishing techniques on the roughness, color, and susceptibility to staining of different resin composites. METHODS: Discs (Ø6 mm x 2 mm) were obtained from different resin composites [nanofilled (Z350XT), suprananofilled (Estelite Omega), and nanohybrid (Forma)]. The specimens (n= 15) were submitted to a simplified protocol using abrasive discs (Sof-Lex) and spiral discs (Diacomp Plus Twist), or a multi-step protocol using abrasive discs (Sof-Lex), abrasive points (Jiffy), silicon carbide brush and felt disc with diamond pastes (Diamond Polish). The specimens were evaluated initially for roughness (Ra) and color (CIEL*a*b*, CIEDE 2000), after completing the polishing protocol, and after exposure to a coffee solution (pH= 5.01). The data were analyzed according to the variables, using generalized linear models, and the Friedman, Nemenyi, Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn, and Mann-Whitney tests (α= 0.05). RESULTS: The nanohybrid resin composite showed an increase in Ra following use of both polishing methods (P= 0.038). Both techniques promoted an increase in L* values after polishing; however, the general color changes (ΔEab and ΔE00) were greater after the multi-step polishing (P< 0.05). After immersion in coffee, the multi-step polished groups of the nanohybrid and suprananofilled resin composite showed higher L* values than the simplified polishing groups (P= 0.023), and the nanofilled resin composite showed higher ΔEab and ΔE00 values than the other resin composites, regardless of the polishing technique (P< 0.05). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The choice of the resin composite had a greater effect on roughness, color stability and susceptibility to staining than the polishing technique. However, luminosity after coffee staining was higher with the multi-step polishing technique.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of coffee staining and bleaching applications on the optical properties of CAD-CAM blocks, and to provide a three-dimensional visualization of surface changes with atomic force microscope (AFM). METHODS: 80 samples were prepared from four different CAD-CAM blocks: [Cerec (CR), Shofu (SH), Cerasmart (CRS), Lava Ultimate (LU)], and a microhybrid composite resin [Filtek Z250 (Z250)]. After staining, the samples were divided into two subgroups according to bleaching methods: 16% carbamide peroxide (HB), and 40% hydrogen peroxide (OB). Color measurements were performed at baseline (t0), after staining (t1), and after bleaching (t2) to obtain translucency parameters (TP00), color change (ΔE00), and whiteness index (WID) values. Surface roughness analysis (Ra) was performed with AFM after coffee staining and bleaching procedures (at t1 and t2). Data were analyzed with Generalized Linear Model, and Bonferroni correction (P< 0.05). RESULTS: TP00 values increased only in the CRS group after the bleaching application, and the effect of method was again observed only in CRS. While bleaching increased WID values of all groups except CRS, no difference was found between bleaching methods. Regardless of evaluation time, the roughest group is Z250, and the only difference between bleaching methods was observed in the CR group. In conclusion, the effects of staining and bleaching applications on the optical and surface properties of CAD-CAM blocks are material-dependent. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Effective bleaching of discolored CAD-CAM materials was achieved regardless of the bleaching method used, and without any significant adverse effect on the surface properties of the materials.

Automatic segmentation of sublingual images and color quantification of sublingual vein are of great significance to disease diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine. With the development of computer vision, automatic sublingual image processing provides a noninvasive way to observe patients' tongue and is convenient for both doctors and patients. However, current sublingual image segmentation methods are not accurate enough. Besides, the differences in subjective judgments by different doctors bring more difficulties in color analysis of sublingual veins. In this paper, we propose a method of sublingual image segmentation based on a modified UNet++ network to improve the segmentation accuracy, a color classification approach based on triplet network, and a color quantization method of sublingual vein based on linear discriminant analysis to provide intuitive one-dimensional results. Our methods achieve 88.2% mean intersection over union (mIoU) and 94.1% pixel accuracy on tongue dorsum segmentation, and achieves 69.8% mIoU and 82.7% pixel accuracy on sublingual vein segmentation. Compared with the state-of-art methods, the segmentation mIoUs are improved by 5.8% and 5.3% respectively. Our sublingual vein color classification method has the highest overall accuracy of 81.2% and the highest recall for the minority class of 77.5%, and the accuracy of color quantization is 90.5%.Clinical Relevance- The methods provide accurate and quantified information of the sublingual image, which can assist doctors in diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Bright flower colour assists plants attract insects to complete pollination and provides distinct ornamental values. In some medicinal plants, diverse flower colour variations usually imply differences in active ingredients. Compared to the common bluish purple of Scutellaria baicalensis flower (SB), the natural variants present rose red (SR) and white (SW) flowers were screened out under the same growing conditions in the genuine producing area Shandong Province, China. However, the mechanism of flower colour variation in S. baicalensis was remain unclear. In the present study, we conducted integrated transcriptome and metabolome analyses to uncover the metabolic difference and regulation mechanism in three S. baicalensis flowers. RESULTS: The results showed that 9 anthocyanins were identified. Among which, 4 delphinidin-based anthocyanins were only detected in SB, 4 cyanidin-based anthocyanins (without cyanidin-3-O-glucoside) mainly accumulated in SR, and no anthocyanin but high level of flavanone, naringenin, was detected in SW. The gene expression profile indicated that the key structural genes in the flavonoid and anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway differentially expressed in flowers with different colours. Compared to SB, the down-regulated expression of F3'5'H, ANS, and 3GT gene in SR might influence the anthocyanin composition. Especially the InDel site with deletion of 7 nucleotides (AATAGAG) in F3'5'H in SR might be the determinant for lack of delphinidin-based anthocyanins in rose red flowers. In SW, the lower expression levels of DFR and two F3H genes might reduce the anthocyanin accumulation. Notably the SNP site of G > A mutation in the splicing site of DFR in SW might block anthocyanin biosynthesis from flavanones and thus cause white flowers. In addition, several key transcription factors, including MYB, bHLH, and NAC, which highly correlated with structural gene expression and anthocyanin contents were also identified. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide clues to uncover the molecular regulatory mechanism of flower colour variation in S. baicalensis and promote novel insights into understanding the anthocyanin biosynthesis and regulation.

OBJECTIVES: This study is to evaluate the color stability, surface roughness, and hardness of additively manufactured and hand-cast splint materials after a 6-month commercially available denture cleaning tablet immersion simulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disc-shaped additively manufactured and hand-cast auto polymerizing acrylic resin specimens were prepared (N = 40 each). All specimens were exposed to coffee solution totally 2 days. Thereafter, all specimens were immersed into three different effervescent solutions that simulated 6 months of clinical use. The total color change (ΔE*ab), surface roughness (Ra), and Vickers hardness (Vh) were measured at baseline and after immersion protocols. A two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni's post hoc test were used for color change. The dependent t-test and ANOVA were used for roughness and hardness evaluation. RESULTS: Additively manufactured splint materials were more affected by coffee immersion. It was observed that all denture cleaning tablets induced a noticeable alteration in color of the specimens (p < 0.05). Roughness and hardness measurement changes after solution immersions were statistically significant for both splint groups (p < 0.05). On the other hand, distilled water and denture cleaning tablets created similar roughness and hardness measurements at baseline and after immersion. CONCLUSIONS: After 6 months use of tested cleaning tables, the color stability, surface roughness, and hardness of both groups were affected. The evaluation of the surface properties of splint materials could be recommended to the dentists in periodic controls during splint treatments. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The use effervescent denture cleaning tablets altered the surface characteristics of tested splint materials over time with nonsignificant difference between each other. After 6 months, awareness should be raised about surface characteristics of splint materials.

Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen is traditionally referred to as "Dalbergiae Odoriferae Lignum" in traditional Chinese medicine. Its quality is typically assessed subjectively based on colour and texture observations and lacks a universal grading system. Our objective was to establish a relationship between heartwood colour and the content of key constituents, including total flavonoids, six specific flavonoids, alcohol-soluble extracts, and volatile oils, to assess their impact on heartwood quality. Substantial correlations were observed between the colour depth (L*), red-green direction (a*), and yellow-blue direction (b*), as well as the content of the extract, volatile oil, total flavonoids, naringenin, formononetin, pinocembrin, and isoliquiritigenin. Specifically, a* was correlated with the extract, total flavonoids, and isoliquiritigenin, whereas b* was correlated with the extract, volatile oil, total flavonoids, naringenin, formononetin, pinocembrin, and isoliquiritigenin. The results suggested that L*, b*, and chemical composition indices, such as extract, volatile oil, total flavonoids, and naringenin, could serve as primary criteria for classifying the quality of medicinal materials. This is consistent with market classification based on colour and texture, which facilitates material identification and guides the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of D. odorifera. This study provides a scientific foundation for its future development and use.
