BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has been used as a treatment for pain associated with osteoarthritis (OA) for thousands of years; however, there is a lack of definitive evidence for this indication in humans or animals. The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture on lameness and clinical function in dogs affected by naturally-occurring OA using objective outcome measures. A total of 32 client-owned dogs completed this prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded clinical trial, using a cross-over design. Participants were assigned to receive placebo or acupuncture treatment once weekly for 4 weeks in random order with a two-week wash-out period in between treatment phases. Outcome measures included ground reaction forces (GRF), subjective orthopedic scoring (SOS), activity counts (AC), and owner-completed clinical metrology instruments (CMI; Canine Brief Pain Inventory [CBPI] and Client Specific Outcome Measures [CSOM]). For statistical comparison, baseline GRF, SOS, and CMI data were compared to data obtained 1 week after each treatment phase. Similarly, total weekly AC of the final week of each treatment phase were compared to the baseline week. RESULTS: Evidence of differences between baseline versus acupuncture and placebo treatments was not identified for the following outcome measures: GRF, AC, or SOS. However, evidence of differences was identified for some of the CMI scores, including the CSOM questionnaire which showed evidence of improvement when comparing baseline versus acupuncture (p = 0.0002) as well as between placebo versus acupuncture treatments (p = 0.035) but not between baseline versus placebo treatments (p = 0.221). CONCLUSIONS: The applied acupuncture protocol did not show improvement in function when using objective outcome measures for OA in dogs; however, certain CMI measurements recorded some degree of treatment response.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of chronic pain and lameness in dogs. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrate of growth and differentiation factors from the blood, which can be used in regenerative medicine strategies. Aim: The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of allogeneic PRP on the treatment of canine OA. Methods: Five dogs from several breeds, between 6 and 12 years old, and from both genders were studied. Clinical and imageological examinations diagnosed OA in the knee, tibiotarsal, elbow, and intercarpal joints. These dogs were refractory to medical therapy and to physical rehabilitation protocols that included shockwave therapy, laser therapy, electrostimulation, hydrotherapy, and diathermy.Animals were treated with allogeneic PRP obtained from the blood of the five dogs, which was processed in a pool. Echoguided intra-articular PRP injection was administered under sedation and after aseptic field preparation. Lameness at walk and trot (five grades) and pain (five scores) were evaluated before treatment and 30, 60, and 90 days post-treatment. Results: All animals presented improvements at 30 and 60 days in both parameters. Four dogs showed a decrease of three grades of lameness after 90 days and there was complete absence of lameness in 2 days. Pain was reduced from severe and moderate to mild in all the dogs after 30 days, and among them, three revealed no pain after 90 days. Conclusion: This study sheds light on the applicability and safety of a single administration of allogeneic PRP in osteoarthritic dogs.

BACKGROUND: Biologic' therapies, such as autologous conditioned serum (ACS), are gaining popularity in treating orthopaedic conditions in equine veterinary medicine. Evidence is scarce regarding ACS constituents, and large inter-individual differences in cytokine and growth factor content have been demonstrated. The objective of the current study was to investigate the potential association between cytokine and growth factor content of ACS and clinical effect in harness racehorses with spontaneously occurring low-grade articular lameness. Horses received 3 intra-articular injections of ACS administered at approximately 2-week intervals. Lameness evaluation consisting of a trot-up with subsequent flexions tests was performed at inclusion and approximately 2 weeks after the last treatment (re-evaluation); horses were classified as responders when there was no detectable lameness on trot-up and a minimum of 50% reduction in flexion test scores at re-evaluation. Association between clinical outcome (responders vs. non-responders) and age, lameness grades at inclusion (both initial trot-up and after flexion tests), treatment interval, follow-up time and the ACS content of IL-1Ra, IGF-1 and TGF-ß was determined by regression modelling. RESULTS: Outcome analysis was available for 19 of 20 included horses; 11 responded to treatment whereas 8 did not. There was considerable inter-individual variability in cytokine/growth factor content of ACS, and in the majority of the horses, the level of IL-10, IL-1ß and TNF-α was below the detection limit. In the final multivariate logistic regression model, ACS content of IGF-1 and IL-1Ra was significantly associated with clinical response (P = 0.01 and P = 0.03, respectively). No association with clinical response was found for the other tested variables. CONCLUSIONS: The therapeutic benefit of ACS may be related to higher levels of IL-1Ra and IGF-1. Our study corroborates previous findings of considerable inter-individual variability of cytokine- and growth factor content in ACS.

Cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) can induce lifelong disabilities, including spasticity and gait impairments. The objective of this pre-clinical study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of simultaneous and combined early locomotor treadmill training (Tm) and injury site magnetic stimulation (TMSsc) on spasticity and gait impairments in a rat model of C6/7 moderate contusion SCI. The Tm training was initiated at post-injury (PI) day 8, whereas TMS treatment was added to Tm 14 days PI, and then the combined therapy (TMSTm) was continued for six weeks. Untreated CSCI animals revealed significant and enduring hindlimb spasticity (measured as velocity-dependent ankle torques and time-locked triceps surae electromyography), significant alterations in limb coordination, and significant reductions in forelimb grip strength. The TMSTm showed significantly lower spasticity, significantly more normal limb coordination (quantitated using three-dimensional (3D) kinematics and Catwalk gait analyses), and significantly greater forelimb grip strength compared with the CSCI untreated controls. In addition, three-dimensional gradient echo and diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging showed that TMSTm treated animals had smaller cavity volumes and better preservation of the white matter. In addition, compared with the CSCI untreated animals, the lumbar spinal cord (SC) of the treatment group revealed significant up-regulation of dopamine beta-hydroxylase, glutamic acid decarboxylase, gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor B, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor. The treatment-induced up-regulation of these molecules may have enhanced the activity-induced adaptive plasticity in the SC and contributed to normalization of pre- and post-synaptic reflex regulatory processes. In addition, the TMSTm therapy may have decreased injury-induced progressive maladaptive segmental and descending plasticity. Our data are the first to suggest that an early simultaneous combination of Tm and injury-site TMSsc application can be an effective therapy for CSCI-induced spasticity and gait impairments. These pre-clinical data demonstrated the feasibility and efficacy of a novel therapeutic strategy for SCI-induced spasticity and gait impairments.

The effect of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) or sham light therapy on pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) requirement, and lameness was studied in 20 dogs with naturally occurring elbow osteoarthritis. Dogs (n = 20) were randomly assigned to receive either PBMT (group PBMT; n = 11) 10 to 20 J/cm2 or a placebo treatment (sham light group S; n = 9) treatment 0 J/cm2, to both elbows for 6 weeks. Lameness score, pain score, and NSAID dose were recorded by blinded study personnel before and 7 to 10 days after last treatment. Reduction in NSAID dose occurred in 9/11 dogs in the PBMT group, and in 0/9 of group S dogs (P = 0.0003). There was greater improvement in lameness score post PMBT versus S therapy (P = 0.001). A greater reduction in pain score was detected in 9/11 parameters in group PBMT (P < 0.05). Regularly scheduled PBMT at 10 to 20 J/cm2 per joint for 6 weeks was successful in improving lameness and pain scores, and in lowering NSAID requirement in canine elbow osteoarthritis patients.


Essai clinique randomisé à double insu examinant les effets de la thérapie par photobiomodulation (PBMT) en comparaison à un placebo pour le traitement de l'ostéoarthrite du coude canin. Les effets de la thérapie par photobiomodulation, PBMT (anciennement thérapie au laser froid, thérapie au laser de basse énergie, ou LLLT, abréviation anglaise) ont été évalués et comparés à un placebo lumineux chez 20 chiens souffrant d'ostéoarthrite bilatérale du coude. Les chiens (n = 20) ont été assignés aléatoirement au groupe recevant le traitement au laser (PBMT; n = 11), ou à celui recevant le traitement placebo (S; n = 9). Les deux groupes ont été traités à double insu pendant 6 semaines, recevant soit 10 à 20 J/cm2 (groupe PBMT) ou 0J/cm2 (S) pendant 3 à 5 minutes sur chaque coude. Avant (pré) et 7 à 10 jours après chaque traitement (post), la fréquence d'administration et le dosage d'anti-inflammatoire non stéroïdien (AINS), le degré de boiterie, évalué par un clinicien, ainsi que le degré de confort selon l'index d'Helsinki pour la douleur chronique, évalué par le propriétaire, ont été notés. Une réduction du besoin en AINS a été possible chez 9 des 11 chiens du groupe PBMT, tandis qu'aucun chien du groupe S n'a pu réduire sa consommation de médicament (P = 0,0003). Les grades de boiterie se sont améliorés de façon plus marquée chez le groupe PBMT que chez le groupe S (P = 0,001). Il en va de même pour l'index d'Helsinki chez le groupe PBMT pour lequel les propriétaires ont remarqué une amélioration du confort de leur animal pour 9 des 11 paramètres évalués (P < 0,05). A 4-year-old male Eurasian Dog presented at our veterinary clinic with a history of perpetual forelimb lameness in both thoracic limbs. In the clinical exploration, direct pressure over the infraspinatus tendon of insertion caused pain in both thoracic forelimbs and a firm band-like structure was palpable. No improvement was observed after treatment with rest, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and an intralesional injection of a long-acting glucocorticoid. Radiographic examination, ultrasonographic exploration and computed tomography were performed, identifying ossified structures lateral to the proximal humerus and an irregular roughened periosteum at the insertion and tendon of the infraspinatus muscle on both sides. There were more distinct alterations on the right thoracic limb. The imaging results led to a diagnosis of an infraspinatus tendon-bursa ossification accompanied by a chronic tendinopathy/tendovaginitis, accentuated on the right side. The dog was subjected to physiotherapy and autologous conditioned plasma (ACP) was injected into the insertion of the infraspinatus muscle of both thoracic limbs. After 5 months of physiotherapy and two injections of ACP with an interval of one week in both forelimbs, the dog showed no signs of lameness. This case report describes the diagnosis and management of infraspinatus tendon-bursa ossification in a Eurasian Dog. To the authors' knowledge, this condition has previously not been described in this breed of dog.

There is a need for evidence-based scientific research to address the question of the effectiveness of acupuncture in improving clinical signs of laminitis in horses. The objective of this study was to compare lameness levels before and after 2 acupuncture treatments in horses with chronic laminitis. Twelve adult horses with chronic laminitis received 2 acupuncture treatments 1 week apart. The points were treated using dry needling, hemo-acupuncture, and aqua-acupuncture. Lameness level was objectively evaluated using an inertial sensor-based lameness evaluation system (Lameness Locator), as well as routine examinations following American Association of Equine Practitioners scoring before the first and 1 week after the second acupuncture treatment. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed-rank test and P-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Both the Lameness Locator (P = 0.0269) and routine lameness examination (P = 0.0039) showed a significant reduction in lameness severity. Our results support using acupuncture, along with other treatment options, in treating chronic equine laminitis.


Réponse à un traitement à l'acupuncture chez des chevaux atteints de laminite chronique. Il existe un besoin de recherche scientifique factuelle afin d'aborder la question de l'efficacité de l'acupuncture pour améliorer les signes cliniques de la laminite chez les chevaux. L'objectif de cette étude consistait à comparer les niveaux de boiterie avant et après deux traitements d'acupuncture chez des chevaux atteints de laminite chronique. Douze chevaux adultes souffrant de laminite chronique ont reçu deux traitements d'acupuncture à 1 semaine d'intervalle. Les points ont été traités en utilisant des aiguilles, l'hémo-acupuncture et l'aqua-acupuncture. Le niveau de boiterie a été évalué objectivement en utilisant un système inertiel d'évaluation de la boiterie à base de sonde (repérage de la boiterie) ainsi qu'à l'aide d'examens de routine en se basant sur la notation de l'American Association of Equine Practitioners avant le premier traitement et 1 semaine après le deuxième traitement d'acupuncture. Les données ont été analysées en utilisant les tests de rang signés de Wilcoxon et des valeurs P < 0,05 étaient considérées comme étant significatives sur le plan statistique. Le repérage de la boiterie (P = 0,0269) et l'examen de routine de la boiterie (P = 0,0039) ont montré une réduction significative de la gravité de la boiterie. The objective of this study was to evaluate intra-articular dextrose prolotherapy for osteoarthritis of the elbow or stifle in dogs in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, prospective pilot study. Seventeen dogs were evaluated with 10 meeting inclusion criteria for this study. Evaluations included orthopedic exam, visual lameness scoring, Canine Brief Pain Inventory (CBPI), goniometry, kinetic gait analysis, and radiography. Initial lameness score, age, body weight, duration of lameness, and CBPI scores did not differ between groups. Change in CBPI pain severity score in the prolotherapy group from wk 6-12 was significantly less improved than in the placebo group, with no other significant differences in pain severity or pain interference scores between groups. Range of motion and radiographic scores did not differ between groups at any time. Mean kinetic forces improved in prolotherapy dogs but were not significantly different between treatment groups at any time. Although easily performed and well-tolerated, there were no statistically significant benefits of dextrose prolotherapy for treatment of osteoarthritis of the elbow and stifle in dogs. Post hoc power analysis of these sample means and standard deviations found that 29-106 animals per group would be necessary to demonstrate significant differences in kinetic forces, providing useful guidance for future studies.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether acupuncture can alter gait in horses as assessed by objective and subjective parameters. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, singleblinded, crossover study. ANIMALS: Eight adult horses. METHODS: Horses were randomly assigned to a treatment (three acupuncture treatments in 8 days) or control group. Subjective and objective gait analyses were performed before and after each treatment and at 1, 3 and 7 days after the last treatment (time-points 1-9, respectively). Horses were assessed at the trot in a straight line on a hard surface and on the lunge on the left and right reins on a soft surface (conditions 1-3, respectively). After 12 weeks, groups were reversed. Objective gait analysis was performed using inertial sensors and subjective analysis by two board- certified surgeons who reviewed video-recordings. Each limb was assessed for lameness before and after treatment. Lameness and global scores were assigned using 4-point scales. Assessors were blinded to treatment status. The effects of treatment (yes/no), time (1-9) and horse under conditions 1 -3 were compared using a linear mixed-effects model and a generalized estimating equation. RESULTS: Treatment decreased hip hike difference under all conditions [condition 1: control, 6.3 ± 6.4 mm versus treatment, -0.2 ± 6.4 mm (p = 0.007); condition 2: control, 9.7 ± 7.8 mm versus treatment, 2.8 ± 7.8 mm (p = 0.032); condition 3: control, 7.3 ± 6.3 mm versus treatment, -2.7 ± 6.4 mm (p = 0.003)]. Other parameters also improved significantly under conditions 1 and 3. Based on subjective gait analysis, treatment decreased lameness [odds ratio (OR) 0.51, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.34-0.78; p = 0.002] but not global (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.24-1.10; p = 0.12) scores. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Acupuncture can change horses' gaits to a degree appreciable by objective and subjective analyses.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate pain intensity and kinetic variables in dogs with hip dysplasia (HD) treated with acupuncture, carprofen, or a placebo. DESIGN Randomized, controlled clinical study. ANIMALS 54 HD-affected dogs and 16 healthy dogs. PROCEDURES Seven HD-affected dogs were removed from the study. Dogs with HD were treated in a blinded manner for 30 days with acupuncture (once weekly for 5 sessions; n = 15), carprofen (4.4 mg/kg [2.0 mg/lb], PO, q 24 h; n = 16), or placebo capsules containing lactose (1 mg/kg [0.45 mg/lb], PO, q 24 h; n = 16). Dogs were evaluated 2 weeks and immediately before (baseline) and 2, 4, and 6 weeks after the onset of treatment. Owners evaluated the dogs' pain intensity with 2 validated questionnaires and a visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain and evaluated degree of lameness with a VAS for locomotion. Kinetics of the hind limbs were also evaluated. Sixteen HD-free dogs were used to assess the evaluation protocol. RESULTS Owners' assessments revealed that outcomes of the 3 treatments did not differ significantly. The Canine Brief Pain Inventory and VAS pain intensity assessments were decreased from baseline at weeks 4 and 6, respectively, but only in acupuncture-treated dogs. The locomotion VAS values were decreased at week 4 in acupuncture-treated and carprofen-treated dogs. Kinetic evaluation findings did not differ among the groups or over time. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Neither acupuncture nor carprofen was significantly different from placebo. Acupuncture and carprofen reduced the degree of subjectively evaluated lameness, and acupuncture was associated with a decrease in validated chronic pain scores.

Acupuncture is used without strong scientific evidence to treat many diseases of the horse, including palmar heel pain. Research is needed to provide evidence for the application of these treatments. Within the confines of our study, acupuncture did not reliably modulate palmar heel pain in horses.


Efficacité d'un traitement d'acupuncture à formule simple pour les chevaux souffrant de douleur du talon palmaire. L'acupuncture est utilisée, en l'absence de solides preuves scientifiques, pour traiter plusieurs affections des chevaux, y compris la douleur du talon palmaire. Lameness in sheep induced by infectious agents can cause problems regarding animal welfare, diagnosis and treatment. Individual lame animals and lameness caused by systemic disease, but especially flock problems due to infectious causes of lameness, such as foot rot, can for various reasons pose a problem for veterinary treatment. The causes of lameness in sheep are described with a special focus on infectious flock problems, and the different treatment options such as foot trimming, foot baths and local and systemic antibiotic therapy as well as vaccination are discussed based on a review of recent international research. The limited choice of drugs licensed for use in sheep in Germany is highlighted. Treatment, therefore, often requires off-label use or the import of footbathing agents licensed in other European countries. The legal consequences of this lack of nationally licensed veterinary products in dealing with a "minor species" are discussed, with a final call for political solutions that will help improve this unsatisfactory situation.

OBJECTIVES: A prospective study to determine if low-level laser therapy and surgery for intervertebral disk herniation encourage ambulation faster than surgery alone. METHODS: Thirty-six dogs with acute paraparesis/paraplegia due to acute intervertebral disk herniation were evaluated and given a modified Frankel score. Dogs with scores 0 to 3 were included in the study. Dogs were assigned to the control group (1) or the laser treatment group (2) based on alternating order of presentation. All dogs underwent surgery for their herniated disk. Dogs in group 2 were treated postoperatively with low-level laser therapy daily for five days, or until they achieved a modified Frankel score of 4. A 5 × 200-mW 810-nm cluster array was used to deliver 25 W/cm(2) to the skin. All dogs were scored daily by the investigators using the modified Frankel scoring system. RESULTS: The time to achieve a modified Frankel score of 4 was significantly lower (P=0.0016) in the low-level laser therapy group (median 3.5 days) than the control group (median 14 days). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Low-level laser therapy in combination with surgery decreases the time to ambulation in dogs with T3-L3 myelopathy secondary to intervertebral disk herniation.

Se reporta el caso de una paciente equina, evaluada por Especial•Vet práctica privada, la cual presentaba alexamen clínico ortopédico un grado de claudicación II/V en ambos miembros posteriores (según clasificaciónde la AAEP), la cual no presento mejoría después de realizar un tratamiento médico de tipo parenteral confenilbutazona. Posteriormente se realizó un nuevo examen clínico ortopédico en el cual se realizó bloqueoanestésico perineural abaxial en ambos miembros posteriores encontrando una mejoría del 90% con respectoal grado de claudicación inicial. Se realizó evaluación radiológica digital, con las siguientes proyecciones:dorso plantar y lateromedial en las cuales se evidenció un área radiolúcida circunscrita a nivel del terciodistal de la primera falange, con comunicación a la articulación interfalángica proximal en ambos miembros posteriores, seguidamente se realizó evaluación ultrasonográfica en la cual se observa un área anecóica y lafalta de continuidad de la superficie ósea a nivel de la articulación interfalángica proximal de ambos miembrosposteriores. Estableciendo de esta forma como diagnóstico definitivo quiste subcondral a nivel del tercio distalde la primera falange, con comunicación a la articulación interfalángica proximal. Se realizó infiltración conacetato de triamcinolona, betametasona y ácido hialurónico a nivel intrarticular; antibioterapia de maneraprofiláctica al procedimiento, descanso en pesebrera por 4 semanas y reincorporación al ejercicio de maneraprogresiva, suministro de complementos condroprotectores de manera enteral (Flexequin® 40 gr/día VO yCortaflex® 20 ml/día VO). Al momento de la publicación de este artículo, la paciente no presenta ningún gradode claudicación y se encuentra realizando un trabajo físico y atlético normal.


We report the case of an equine patient, assessed by Especial Vet private practice, whose orthopedic clinicalexamination showed a degree of lameness II / V in both hind limbs (according to AAEP classification), whichdemonstrated no improvement after medical treatment with parenteral phenylbutazone. Subsequently a neworthopedic clinical examination was performed in which an abaxial, perineural anesthetic block was applied to both hind legs, which produced 90% improvement compared to the initial degree of lameness. Digital radiographicevaluation was performed with the following results: dorsal-plantar and lateral-medial images which showeda circumscribed, radiolucent area at the level of the distal third of the first phalanx, with communication to theproximal interphalangeal joint on both hind limbs. Following, an ultrasound evaluation was carried out in whichthere was an anechoic area and lack of continuity of the bone surface at the proximal interphalangeal joint of bothhind limbs. These findings established a definitive diagnosis of a subchondral bone cyst at the distal third of the firstphalanx, with communication to the proximal interphalangeal joint. Intra-articular infiltration was performed with triamcinolone acetonide, betamethasone and hyaluronic acid; antibiotics as prophylaxis, rest in a stable for 4 weekswith a gradual return to exercise, and provision of enteral, chondroprotective supplements (p.o. Flexequin ® 40 gr/day and p.o. Cortaflex ® 20ml/day). At the time of publication of this article, the patient does not present any degreeof lameness and is performing normal athletic and physical activity.


Relatamos um caso de um paciente eqüino, avaliado pela prática privada Especial Vet, cujo exame clínicoortopédico mostrou um grau de claudicação II / V em ambos os membros posteriores (de acordo com aclassificação do AAEP), o qual não demonstrou melhora após o tratamento médico com fenilbutazona parenteral.Após a aplicação de um bloqueio anestésico perineural abaxial em ambas as pernas traseiras, foi realizadoum novo exame clínico ortopédico, mostrando uma melhora de 90% em comparação com o grau inicial declaudicação. Realizou-se também uma avaliação radiográfica digital obtendo-se os seguintes resultados: imagensdorso-plantar e latero-medial que mostrou uma área radiolúcida circunscrita ao nível do terço distal da primeirafalange, com comunicação para a articulação interfalângica proximal em ambos os membros posteriores. E após,a realização de um ultra-som, verificou-se que houve uma área anecóica e falta de continuidade da superfície óssea ao nível da articulação interfalângica proximal dos dois membros posteriores. Desta forma estabeleceu umdiagnóstico definitivo de um cisto ósseo subcondral no terço distal da primeira falange, com comunicação para aarticulação interfalângica proximal. Uma infiltração intra-articular foi realizada com acetato de triamcinolona,betametasona e ácido hialurônico; antibióticos como profilaxia, um descanso em estábulo durante 4 semanas, com um retorno gradual aos exercícios, e administração de suplementos condroprotetores de maneira enteral(Flexequin® 40 gr/día VO e Cortaflex® 20 ml/día VO). No momento da publicação deste artigo, o paciente nãoapresenta qualquer grau de claudicação e está realizando atividades atléticas e físicas normais.

Rats receiving a complete spinal cord transection (ST) at a neonatal stage spontaneously can recover significant stepping ability, whereas minimal recovery is attained in rats transected as adults. In addition, neonatally spinal cord transected rats trained to step more readily improve their locomotor ability. We hypothesized that recovery of stepping in rats receiving a complete spinal cord transection at postnatal day 5 (P5) is attributable to changes in the lumbosacral neural circuitry and not to regeneration of axons across the lesion. As expected, stepping performance measured by several kinematics parameters was significantly better in ST (at P5) trained (treadmill stepping for 8 weeks) than age-matched non-trained spinal rats. Anterograde tracing with biotinylated dextran amine showed an absence of labeling of corticospinal or rubrospinal tract axons below the transection. Retrograde tracing with Fast Blue from the spinal cord below the transection showed no labeled neurons in the somatosensory motor cortex of the hindlimb area, red nucleus, spinal vestibular nucleus, and medullary reticular nucleus. Retrograde labeling transsynaptically via injection of pseudorabies virus (Bartha) into the soleus and tibialis anterior muscles showed no labeling in the same brain nuclei. Furthermore, re-transection of the spinal cord at or rostral to the original transection did not affect stepping ability. Combined, these results clearly indicate that there was no regeneration across the lesion after a complete spinal cord transection in neonatal rats and suggest that this is an important model to understand the higher level of locomotor recovery in rats attributable to lumbosacral mechanisms after receiving a complete ST at a neonatal compared to an adult stage.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical variables assessed during the first 24 hours of hospitalization as prognostic indicators for nonambulatory cattle treated by use of a flotation tank. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 51 nonambulatory cattle that underwent flotation treatment. PROCEDURES: Signalment, history, serum biochemical analyses, patient behavior during flotation, and outcome data were collected from medical records. Outcome was survival to discharge from the hospital or nonsurvival (death or euthanasia). Data were analyzed by use of Wilcoxon rank sum, Fisher exact, and chi(2) tests. RESULTS: 19 of 51 cattle survived. Survivors and nonsurvivors did not differ significantly with regard to median weight; age; stage of lactation; duration of recumbency prior to flotation; serum potassium, ionized calcium, or phosphate concentrations at admission to the hospital; or serum creatine kinase activity (value at admission to the hospital, highest value, and last recorded value). Cattle that were able to walk out of the tank after the first flotation treatment were 4.8 times as likely to survive as those that could not. Cattle that did not eat during flotation treatment were 1.9 times as likely to die as those that ate. Cattle that stood apparently normally on all limbs during the first flotation treatment were 2.9 times as likely to survive as those that had an asymmetric stance or were unable to stand. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that objective variables evaluated during the first 24 hours of hospitalization and flotation treatment are associated with outcome among nonambulatory cattle; findings might assist in logical decision making with respect to treatment options.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a weight reduction program combined with a basic or more complex physical therapy program including transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation on lameness in overweight dogs with osteoarthritis. DESIGN: Nonblinded prospective randomized clinical trial. Animals-29 adult overweight or obese dogs with a body condition score of 4/5 or 5/5 and clinical and radiographic signs of osteoarthritis. PROCEDURES: A weight-loss program was initiated for all dogs. One group received caloric restriction and a home-based physical therapy program. The other group received the identical dietetic protocol and an intensive physical therapy program including transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Lameness was assessed clinically and by kinetic gait analysis on a treadmill with 4 force plates to measure symmetry of ground reaction forces (GRFs) of the affected and contralateral limbs in bimonthly intervals for 6 months. RESULTS: Significant weight loss was achieved in both groups; however, greater weight reduction was attained by dogs treated with caloric restriction and intensive physiotherapy. Mobility and symmetry indices of GRFs were improved after 6 months; the best outcome was detected in the group receiving energy restriction combined with intensive physical therapy. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Caloric restriction combined with intensive physical therapy improved mobility and facilitated weight loss in overweight dogs. The combination of dietetic and physical therapy may help to improve the health status more efficiently than dietetic treatment alone.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether use of electrostimuluated acupuncture (ESA) would result in significant improvements in ground reaction forces and lameness scores in dogs with chronic elbow joint osteoarthritis secondary to elbow joint dysplasia. DESIGN: Randomized, controlled, crossover clinical trial. ANIMALS: 9 dogs with chronic forelimb lameness and radiographic evidence of elbow joint osteoarthritis. PROCEDURES: All dogs had a 3-week control acclimation period during which gait analysis was performed weekly. Dogs then received ESA once weekly for 3 weeks followed by a sham treatment once weekly for 3 weeks or received the sham treatment followed by ESA. Gait analysis was repeated prior to each treatment, and owners were asked to provide pain scores by use of a visual analog scale method. RESULTS: Treatment (control, acupuncture, or sham) did not have a significant effect on ground reaction forces for any limb. Owners of 8 of the 9 dogs were able to correctly guess the time period when ESA was delivered. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggested that ESA did not have any significant effects on severity of lameness, as determined by measurement of ground reaction forces, or severity of pain, as determined by visual analog scale pain scores, in dogs with chronic elbow joint osteoarthritis secondary to elbow joint dysplasia.
