RESUMO

The detection of heavy metals in tea infusions is important because of the potential health risks associated with their consumption. Existing highly sensitive detection methods pose challenges because they are complicated and time-consuming. In this study, we developed an innovative and simple method using Ag nanoparticles-modified resin (AgNPs-MR) for pre-enrichment prior to laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for the simultaneous analysis of Cr (III), Cu (II), and Pb (II) in tea infusions. Signal enhancement using AgNPs-MR resulted in amplification with limits of detection of 0.22 µg L-1 for Cr (III), 0.33 µg L-1 for Cu (II), and 1.25 µg L-1 for Pb (II). Quantitative analyses of these ions in infusions of black tea from various brands yielded recoveries ranging from 83.3% to 114.5%. This method is effective as a direct and highly sensitive technique for precisely quantifying trace concentrations of heavy metals in tea infusions.

The risk assessment of heavy metals in tea is extremely imperative for the health of tea consumers. However, the effects of varietal variations and seasonal fluctuations on heavy metals and minerals in tea plants remain unclear. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used to evaluate the contents of aluminum (Al), manganese (Mn), magnesium (Mg), boron (B), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), iron (Fe), sodium (Na), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and antimony (Sb) in the two categories of young leaves (YL) and mature leaves (ML) of tea (Camellia sinensis) cultivars throughout the growing seasons. The results showed significant variations in the contents of the investigated nutrients both among the different cultivars and growing seasons as well. Furthermore, the average concentrations of Al, Mn, Mg, B, Ca, Cu, Co, Fe, Na, Zn, As, Cd, Cr, Ni, and Sb in YL ranged, from 671.58-2209.12, 1260.58-1902.21, 2290.56-2995.36, 91.18-164.68, 821.95-5708.20, 2.55-3.80, 3.96-25.22, 37.95-202.84, 81.79-205.05, 27.10-69.67, 0.028-0.053, 0.065-0.127, 2.40-3.73, 10.57-12.64, 0.11-0.14 mg kg-1, respectively. In ML, the concentrations were 2626.41-7834.60, 3980.82-6473.64, 3335.38-4537.48, 327.33-501.70, 9619.89-13153.68, 4.23-8.18, 17.23-34.20, 329.39-567.19, 145.36-248.69, 40.50-81.42, 0.089-0.169, 0.23-0.27, 5.24-7.89, 18.51-23.97, 0.15-0.19 mg kg-1, respectively. The contents of all analyzed nutrients were found to be higher in ML than in YL. Target hazard quotients (THQ) of As, Cd, Cr, Ni, and Sb, as well as the hazard index (HI), were all less than one, suggesting no risk to human health via tea consumption. This research might provide the groundwork for essential minerals recommendations, as well as a better understanding and management of heavy metal risks in tea.

The monitoring of essential and toxic elements in patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) undergoing methadone treatment (MT) is important, and there is limited previous research on the urinary levels of these elements in MT patients. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze certain elements in the context of methadone treatment compared to a healthy group. In this study, patients with opioid use disorder undergoing MT (n = 67) were compared with a healthy group of companions (n = 62) in terms of urinary concentrations of some essential elements (selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca)) and toxic elements (lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and chromium (Cr)). Urine samples were prepared using the acid digestion method with a mixture of nitric acid and perchloric acid and assessed using the ICP-MS method. Our results showed that the two groups had no significant differences in terms of gender, education level, occupation, and smoking status. Urinary concentrations of Se, Cu, and Fe levels were significantly lower in the MT group compared to the healthy subjects. However, the concentrations of Pb, Cd, As, Mn, Cr, and Ca in the MT group were higher than in the healthy group (p < 0.05). No significant difference was established between the levels of Zn in the two groups (p = 0.232). The results of regression analysis revealed that the differences between the concentration levels of all metals (except Zn) between two groups were still remained significant after adjusting for all variables (p < 0.05). The data obtained in the current study showed lower urinary concentrations of some essential elements and higher levels of some toxic elements in the MT group compared to the healthy subjects. These findings should be incorporated into harm-reduction interventions.

In this study, nano-zero-valent iron/copper was synthesized by green tea extracts (GT-nZVI/Cu) and produced a stable suspension than nano-zero-valent iron synthesized by green tea extracts (GT-nZVI) injected into Cr(VI)-containing soil column. The equilibrium 1D-CDE model was successfully used to fit the penetration curves of Fe(tot), Fe(aq), and Fe(0) in order to determine the relevant parameters. The hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient of chromium-contaminated soil was 0.401 cm2·h-1, and the pore flow rate was 0.144 cm·h-1. The stable C/C0 of Fe(tot), Fe(aq), and Fe(0) in the effluent were retarded to 0.39, 0.79, and 0.11, respectively, compared to a ratio of 1 for the concentration of the tracer Cl- in the effluent to the concentration in the influent. Additionally, the 1D-CDE model describes the migration behavior of Cr(VI) with a high R2 (> 0.97). The obtained blocking coefficients declined gradually with increasing concentration of GT-nZVI/Cu suspension and decreasing concentration of Cr(VI). The content of reduced chromium in the soil decreased from 2.986 to 1.121 after remediation, while the content of more stable oxidizable chromium and residual chromium increased from 2.975 and 20.021 to 16.471 and 27.612. The phytotoxicity test showed that mung bean seeds still had a germination rate of 90% (control of 100%), root length of 29.63 mm (control of 35.25 mm), and stem length of 17.9 cm (control of 18.96 cm) after remediation with GT-nZVI/Cu. These indicated that GT-nZVI/Cu was effective in immobilizing Cr(VI) in the soil column and reduced the ecological threat. This study provides an analytical basis and theoretical model for the migration of chromium-contaminated soil in practical application.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive function has inevitable decline with advancing age in nature, and age-related cognitive decline (ARCD) is of increasing concern to aging population. Scarce study has involved the associations between hair trace elements and ARCD in older adults, especially in centenarians and oldest-old adults. This study was to investigate the associations between hair trace elements and ARCD in centenarians and oldest-old adults. METHODS: Based on the household registration information of centenarians and oldest-old adults provided by the Civil Affairs Department of Hainan Province, China, the investigators conducted a one-to-one household survey among centenarians (≥100 years old) and oldest-old adults (80-99 years old). All 50 centenarians had a median age of 103 years and females accounted for 68.0%. All 73 oldest-old adults aged 80-99 years had a median age of 90 years and females accounted for 82.2%. Basic information were obtained with questionnaire interview, physical examination, biological test and hair collection by pre-trained local doctors and nurses. An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer was used to measure hair trace elements. All data in this study comes from China. Age, sex, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, smoking, drinking, hemoglobin, albumin, fasting blood pressure, zinc, chromium, copper, selenium, iron, manganese, strontium, lead, magnesium, potassium, and barium were simultaneously included in multivariate Logistic regression analysis. One adjusted model was done with all hair trace elements together. RESULTS: Zinc and chromium levels were significantly lower in participants with ARCD than those without ARCD (P < 0.05 for all). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis indicated that zinc [odds ratio (OR): 0.988, 95%confidence interval (95%CI): 0.977-0.999] and chromium (OR: 0.051, 95%CI: 0.004-0.705) were associated with a reduced likelihood of ARCD (P < 0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS: Hair zinc and chromium levels were associated with a reduced likelihood of ARCD in centenarians and oldest-old adults. Further studies are necessary to verify if zinc and chromium supplementation has the potential to improve cognitive function and prevent ARCD development.

This study focuses on a flushing-electrokinetic remediation technology of hexavalent chromium from the chromium slag dump site. A suspension of nanoscale zero-valent iron/nickel fabricated from green tea (GT-nZVI/Ni), was employed as an eluent to degrade Cr (VI) and enhance the remediation effectiveness of a single EK. The removal efficiency of Cr (VI) was compared under different voltages, electrode spacings and pH values of the anolyte. The results demonstrated that the combined flushing and EK achieved a removal rate of Cr (VI) in the soil throughout all the experiments ranging from 83.08 to 96.97% after 120 h. The optimal result was obtained when the voltage was 28 V, the pH value of anolyte was 3 and the electrode spacing was 15 cm. The removal of Cr (VI) reached 91.49% and the energy consumption was 0.32606 kW·h·g-1. The underlying mechanisms responsible for the removal of Cr (VI) by GT-nZVI/Ni flushing-EK primarily involved electromigration, reduction and adsorption co-precipitation processes. The fractionation analysis of Cr (VI) concentration in the soil after remediation showed that the presence of GT-nZVI/Ni facilitated the conversion of Cr (VI) into oxidizable and residual states with low mobility and toxicity. The results of toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) indicated that the leaching concentration of Cr (VI) was below 1 mg·L-1, complying with the standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally, the phytotoxicity testing revealed that the germination index (GI) of the remediated soil reached 54.75%, indicating no potential harm to plants.

The electroplating industry encompasses various processes and plating types that contribute to environmental pollution, which has led to growing public concern. To investigate related soil pollution in China, the study selected 10 sites with diverse industrial characteristics distributed across China and collected 1052 soil samples to determine the presence of industrial priority pollutants (PP) based on production process and pollutant toxicity. The factors influencing site pollution as well as proposed pollution prevention and control approaches were then evaluated. The results indicate the presence of significant pollution in the electroplating industry, with ten constituents surpassing the risk screening values (RSV). The identified PP consist of Cr(VI), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), total chromium (Cr), and petroleum hydrocarbons (C10-C40). PP contamination was primarily observed in production areas, liquid storage facilities, and solid zones. The vertical distribution of metal pollutants decreased with soil depth, whereas the reverse was true for petroleum hydrocarbons (C10-C40). Increase in site production time was strongly correlated with soil pollution, but strengthening anti-seepage measures in key areas can effectively reduce the soil exceedance standard ratio. This study serves as a foundation for conceptualizing site repair technology in the electroplating industry and offers a reference and methodology for pollution and source control in this and related sectors.

Between 1999 and 2009, 344,000 m3 of red mud was released into the red mud dumping zone in the East Sea-Byeong ocean dumping site in South Korea. This study aimed to assess the impacts before and after the 2010 red mud dumping ban. We quantified total Cr concentrations by depth from core sediment samples at the red mud dumping station and evaluated benthic communities in 2004, 2009, 2012, 2017, and 2019. At the dumping station DB-085, the Cr content in the upper layer (0-10 cm) exceeded the effect range median criteria in all study years and decreased with time. Geochemical fraction studies using sequential extraction methods from core sediment samples in 2004, 2009, and 2017 showed high ratios of non-residual fractions (anthropogenic inputs), indicating persistent potential long-term risk after the 2010 ban. Additionally, we confirmed that Thyasira tokunagai, an opportunistic and contamination-stress-resistant species, dominated the study station.

High arsenic, chromium and nickel in soils can pose a hazard to the ecosystem and/or human health. Large areas can be affected by elevated potentially toxic elements (PTE) background contents, entailing a significant effort for managing the potential risk. Assessing the environmental hazard associated to PTE-contaminated soils requires the determination of soil PTE environmental bioavailability, which reflects the capacity of these elements to be transferred to living organisms. Here we assess the environmental bioavailability of As, Cr and Ni in topsoils from the Liège basin and Belgian Lorraine, two areas in Wallonia, Belgium, affected by elevated As, Cr and Ni background contents. The source of soil As, Cr and Ni differs in Liège and Lorraine: anthropogenic in the former location and geogenic in the latter. The environmental bioavailability of PTE was determined using two complementary approaches: (1) by chemical fractionation with the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) three-step sequential extraction protocol and (2) by estimating the phytoavailability using a plant-based biotest (Lolium multiflorum as plant model). The results show that total As (6-130 mg·kg-1), Cr (15-268 mg·kg-1), and Ni (8-140 mg·kg-1) contents in the Liège and Lorraine soils frequently exceed the soil clean-up standards. However, no positive correlation was found between the total contents and BCR extraction results or rye-grass contents, except for As in Liège soils. Total As, Cr or Ni contents surpassing soil standards do not necessarily result in elevated mobile, potentially mobilizable and phytoavailable contents. In general, environmental bioavailability of As, Cr and Ni is higher in soils from Liège basin compared to those sampled in Belgian Lorraine. The mobile and potentially mobilizable fractions of As, Cr and Ni account for <30 % of their total contents following the BCR extractions. Our study provides valuable information for sustainable management at the regional scale of soils containing high PTE contents.

Rice is a predominant staple food in many countries. It is a great source of energy but can also accumulate toxic and trace metal(loid)s from the environment and pose serious health hazards to consumers if overdosed. This study aims to determine the concentration of toxic metal(loid)s [arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni)] and essential metal(loid)s [iron (Fe), selenium (Se), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co)] in various types of commercially available rice (basmati, glutinous, brown, local whites, and fragrant rice) in Malaysia, and to assess the potential human health risk. Rice samples were digested following the USEPA 3050B acid digestion method and the concentrations of metal(loid)s were analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Mean concentrations (mg/kg as dry weight) of metal(loid)s (n=45) across all rice types were found in the order of Fe (41.37)>Cu (6.51)>Cr (1.91)>Ni (0.38)>As (0.35)>Se (0.07)>Cd (0.03)>Co (0.02). Thirty-three percent and none of the rice samples surpassed, respectively, the FAO/WHO recommended limits of As and Cd. This study revealed that rice could be a primary exposure pathway to toxic metal(loid)s, leading to either noncarcinogenic or carcinogenic health problems. The non-carcinogenic health risk was mainly associated with As which contributed 63% to the hazard index followed by Cr (34%), Cd (2%), and Ni (1%). The carcinogenic risk to adults was high (>10-4) for As, Cr, Cd, and Ni. The cancer risk (CR) for each element was 5 to 8 times higher than the upper limit of cancer risk for an environmental carcinogen (<10-4). The findings from this study could provide the metal(loid)s pollution status of various types of rice which are beneficial to relevant authorities in addressing food safety and security-related issues.

In this research, an innovative type of sediment resource treatment agent (SRA) was synthesized successfully, which could immobilize ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total phosphorus (TP), potassium (K), and simultaneously stabilize cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) in dredged sediment. The effects of SRA dosage on stabilizing the nutrient elements and heavy metals were investigated. The results demonstrated that the increase of SRA dosage significantly enhanced the stabilization of nutrients and heavy metals. The 14-day rainwater infiltration and rainwater scouring experiments were carried out. With the simulation test of rainwater infiltration, the stabilization ratios of Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cd, NH3-N, TP, and K with 2% SRA addition reached 80.8%, 76.8%, 80.3%, 77.5%, 78.0%, 72.7%, 64.3%, 73.9%, and 73.9%, respectively. Under the action of rainwater scouring, the stabilization ratios of Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cd, NH3-N, TP, and K with 6.4% SRA addition reached 84.6%, 84.0%, 77.6%, 87.3%, 80.0%, 61.5%, 76.2%, 77.8%, and 91.7%, respectively. Therefore, the results demonstrate that SRA is an excellent composite material in stabilizing heavy metals while reserving the nutrients in dredged sediment, thus showing great potential in the application for dredged sediment resource treatment.

Self-sustaining smoldering is an emerging technology for nonaqueous-phase liquid remediation; however, it is rarely applied for Cr(VI)-contaminated soil treatment. In this study, self-sustaining smoldering using rice straw (RS) as a surrogate fuel was applied to remediate Cr(VI)-contaminated soil for the first time. Thirteen one-dimensional vertical smoldering experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the smoldering method and the effects of key experimental parameters on smoldering remediation performance. Smoldering was observed to be self-sustaining within the range of RS particle size from <0.16 to 2.00-4.00 mm, airflow from 0.2 to 1 m3/h, and Cr(VI)-impacted soil/RS ratios from 2:1 to 6:1. The Cr(VI)-contaminated soil was effectively remediated, which was confirmed by lowered Cr(VI) contents in the treated samples (decreased by 52.22-86.57%) and the elevated fraction of Cr oxidizable and residual form (increased by 1.14-3.30 and 2.97-4.00 times, respectively), compared to the control. The reducing gases (CO and CxHy) generated during the smoldering played a crucial role in the remediation process. The contents of available P and K in the remediated soil containing the remaining biochar and ash increased, thus improving soil reusability. Hence, this study shows that smoldering with RS as supplemental fuel is a promising Cr(VI)-contaminated soil management technique without supplying substantial external energy.

Chromium (Cr) affects human health if it accumulates in organs to elevated concentrations. The toxicity risk of Cr in the ecosphere depends upon the dominant Cr species and their bioavailability in the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. However, the soil-water-human nexus that controls the biogeochemical behaviour of Cr and its potential toxicity is not fully understood. This paper synthesizes information on different dimensions of Cr ecotoxicological hazards in the soil and water and their subsequent effects on human health. The various routes of environmental exposure of Cr to humans and other organisms are also discussed. Human exposure to Cr(VI) causes both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects via complicated reactions that include oxidative stress, chromosomal and DNA damage, and mutagenesis. Chromium(VI) inhalation can cause lung cancer; however, incidences of other types of cancer following Cr(VI) exposure are low but probable. The non-carcinogenic health consequences of Cr(VI) exposure are primarily respiratory and cutaneous. Research on the biogeochemical behaviour of Cr and its toxicological hazards on human and other biological routes is therefore urgently needed to develop a holistic approach to understanding the soil-water-human nexus that controls the toxicological hazards of Cr and its detoxification.

Urbanisation and associated anthropogenic activities release large quantities of toxic metals and metalloids into the environment, where they may bioaccumulate and threaten both wildlife and human health. In highly transformed landscapes, terrestrial carnivores may be at increased risk of exposure through biomagnification. We quantified metallic element and metalloid exposure in blood of caracals (Caracal caracal), an adaptable felid inhabiting the rapidly urbanising, coastal metropole of Cape Town, South Africa. Using redundancy analysis and mixed-effect models, we explored the influence of demography, landscape use, and diet on the concentration of 11 metals and metalloids. Although species-specific toxic thresholds are lacking, arsenic (As) and chromium (Cr) were present at potentially sublethal levels in several individuals. Increased use of human-transformed landscapes, particularly urban areas, roads, and vineyards, was significantly associated with increased exposure to aluminium (Al), cobalt (Co) and lead (Pb). Foraging closer to the coast and within aquatic food webs was associated with increased levels of mercury (Hg), selenium (Se) and arsenic, where regular predation on seabirds and waterbirds likely facilitates transfer of metals from aquatic to terrestrial food webs. Further, several elements were linked to lower haemoglobin levels (chromium, mercury, manganese, and zinc) and elevated levels of infection-fighting cells (mercury and selenium). Our results highlight the importance of anthropogenic activities as major environmental sources of metal contamination in terrestrial wildlife, including exposure across the land-ocean continuum. These findings contribute towards the growing evidence suggesting cities are particularly toxic areas for wildlife. Co-exposure to a suite of metal pollutants may threaten the long-term health and persistence of Cape Town's caracal population in unexpected ways, particularly when interacting with additional known pollutant and pathogen exposure. The caracal is a valuable sentinel for assessing metal exposure and can be used in pollution monitoring programmes to mitigate exposure and promote biodiversity conservation in human-dominated landscapes.

Cr(VI) bioreduction has become a remedial alternative for Cr(VI)-polluted site cleanup. However, lack of appropriate Cr(VI)-bioreducing bacteria limit the field application of the in situ bioremediation process. In this study, two different immobilized Cr(VI)-bioreducing bacterial consortia using novel immobilization agents have been developed for Cr(VI)-polluted groundwater remediation: (1) granular activated carbon (GAC) + silica gel + Cr(VI)-bioreducing bacterial consortia (GSIB), and (2) GAC + sodium alginate (SA) + polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) + Cr(VI)-bioreducing bacterial consortia (GSPB). Moreover, two unique substrates [carbon-based agent (CBA) and emulsified polycolloid substrate (EPS)] were developed and used as the carbon sources for Cr(VI) bioreduction enhancement. The microbial diversity, dominant Cr-bioreducing bacteria, and changes of Cr(VI)-reducing genes (nsfA, yieF, and chrR) were analyzed to assess the effectiveness of Cr(VI) bioreduction. Approximately 99% of Cr(VI) could be bioreduced in microcosms with GSIB and CBA addition after 70 days of operation, which caused increased populations of total bacteria, nsfA, yieF, and chrR from 2.9 × 108 to 2.1 × 1012, 4.2 × 104 to 6.3 × 1011, 4.8 × 104 to 2 × 1011, and 6.9 × 104 to 3.7 × 107 gene copies/L. In microcosms with CBA and suspended bacteria addition (without bacterial immobilization), the Cr(VI) reduction efficiency dropped to 60.3%, indicating that immobilized Cr-bioreducing bacteria supplement could enhance Cr(VI) bioreduction. Supplement of GSPB led to a declined bacterial growth due to the cracking of the materials. The addition of GSIB and CBA could establish a reduced condition, which favored the growth of Cr(VI)-reducing bacteria. The Cr(VI) bioreduction efficiency could be significantly improved through adsorption and bioreduction mechanisms, and production of Cr(OH)3 precipitates confirmed the occurrence of Cr(VI) reduction. The main Cr-bioreducing bacteria included Trichococcus, Escherichia-Shigella, and Lactobacillus. Results suggest that the developed GSIB bioremedial system could be applied to cleanup Cr(VI)-polluted groundwater effectively.

Environmental pollutants and their effect on wildlife health play an important role in the conservation of endangered species and can be clinically relevant in captive animals too. Data on relevant concentrations of trace elements in captive birds with no known exposures are rare. For this study, silver, arsenic, gold, barium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, mercury, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, thallium, selenium, and zinc were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in lithium heparinized plasma samples from 18 Humboldt penguins at 2 zoological collections in Germany. The results showed that the plasma concentrations of silver, arsenic, gold, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, mercury, and selenium differed significantly (P ≤ 0.05) between the 2 penguin collections. The results indicate that the location of the birds has a strong influence on the plasma trace element concentrations. Well water used in the enclosures was suspected to be associated with these significant differences. Trace elemental concentrations in feed (eg, marine fish) and contamination from enclosure construction materials may also play a role. This study could provide a basis for further comparative, biomonitoring, toxicity, and reference interval studies.

BACKGROUND: Hexavalent chromium known as oxidizing agent is able to form reactive oxygen species. Aronia melanocarpa and Hypericum perforatum are two plants known for their antioxidant effects. Our study aimed to establish if CrVI induces apoptosis and structural changes in thyrocytes and if its effect can be counteracted by the administration of both extracts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Wistar rats divided in five groups: C - distilled water (DW), Cr - 75 mg/L CrVI in DW for 3 months, Cr 2 - 75 mg/L CrVI in DW for 3 months followed by 1 month DW, CrA - 3 months 75 mg/L CrVI in DW and 1 month Aronia 2.5% extract, CrH - 3 months 75 mg/L CrVI in DW and 1 month Hypericum 2.5% extract. Histological assessment and qRT-PCR for evaluation of BAX and Bcl2 protein levels performed on thyroid samples. RESULTS: The Cr and Cr2 groups were those with altered cytoarchitecture: increase in the diameter of many thyroid follicles, a decrease in their number, a decrease in the height of the follicular cells. The histological examination of the CrH group revealed almost recovery of structural architecture. The BAX gene levels were higher in the Cr and Cr2 groups indicating the apoptotic activity of chromium. In extract receiving groups the BAX gene expressions were significantly lower, but the lowest level presented the CrH group. Bcl2 gene expression levels indicate antiapoptotic activity being elevated in the Cr group, followed by CrA, Cr2, and CrH groups. The BAX/Bcl2 ratio which significantly increased in the case of the Cr and Cr2 group compared to the groups that were administered the two plant extracts. CONCLUSION: The results obtained in this study confirm that CrVI has toxic effects on thyroid endocrine cells and H. perforatum has stronger antioxidant properties against the action of hexavalent chromium in thyrocytes than A. melanocarpa.

The first element legislated adopting chemical speciation was chromium (Cr) for differentiation between the highly toxic Cr(VI) from the micronutrient Cr(III). Therefore, this work aimed to develop a new analytical method through the coupling of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode-Array Detection (HPLC-DAD) with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to obtain molecular and elemental information simultaneously from a single sample injection. In the first step, a low-cost flow split made of acrylic was developed aiming at optimally directing the sample to the detectors, enabling the HPLC-DAD/ICP-MS coupling. After the extraction of Certified Reference Materials (CRM of natural water NIST1640a and sugar cane leaf agro FC_012017), the recoveries determined by ICP-MS were 99.7% and 85.4%, respectively. Then, the method of HPLC-DAD/ICP-MS was applied for real samples of the CRMs. The presence of possible biomolecules associated with Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species was evaluated, with the simultaneous response detection of molecular (DAD) and elementary (ICP-MS) detectors. Potential biomolecules were observed during the monitoring of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) in sugar cane leaves, water samples and a supplement of Cr picolinate. Finally, the article also discusses the potential of the technique applied to biomolecules containing other associated elements and the need of more bioanalytical methods to understand the presence of trace elements in biomolecules.

The toxicity and carcinogenicity of Cr(VI) makes it a major threat to the health of animals and people. However, how to efficiently remove Cr(VI) still faces important challenges. In this study, a new metal-free polypyrrole-red phosphorus (PPy-RP) composite is successfully synthesized by in-situ oxidation polymerization for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater. The maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of Cr(VI) on PPy-RP-1 is 513.2 mg/g when the pH value is 2, which is far superior to RP nanosheets (207.8 mg/g) and PPy (294.9 mg/g). The improved qm can be ascribe to the good dispersion and increased specific surface area of PPy-RP adsorbent. Encouragingly, PPy-RP adsorbent still exhibits excellent stability after 7 cycles tests without a significant decline in removal efficiency, and remain above 81.4%. Based on the fittings of adsorption isotherms and kinetics, the process conforms to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the single-layer adsorption of the Langmuir model with an R2 value of 0.98533. The adsorption process is chemical and monolayer. The experimental result demonstrates that the PPy-RP can efficient removal Cr(VI) by electrostatic attraction and complexation reaction (formation of N-Cr(VI) bond) through the PPy on the surface. The results of this study indicate that PPy-RP is a promising adsorbent to remove the Cr(IV).

Contamination of land and aquatic ecosystems with heavy metals (HMs) is a global issue having the persistent potential to damage the quality of food and water. In the present study, Tagetes erecta L. plants were used to assess their potential to uptake HMs from wastewater. Plants were grown in soil for 20 days and then transplanted in hydroponic system containing Hoagland nutrient solution. After more than 15 days of growth, plants were then subjected to wastewater from tannery and surgical industries in different concentrations ranging from 25 to 100% in combination of citric acid (5 and 10 mM). After 6 weeks of treatment, plants were collected and segmented into roots, stem, and leaves for characterizing the morphological properties including plant height, roots length, fresh and dry mass of roots, stem, and leaves. For evaluation of the effect of wastewater on the plants, photosynthetic pigments; soluble proteins; reactive oxygen species (ROS); antioxidant enzymes SOD, POD, CAT, and APX; and metal accumulation were analyzed. Application of industrial wastewater revealed a significant effect on plant morphology under wastewater treatments. Overall growth and physiological attributes of plant decreased, and metal accumulation enhanced with increasing concentration of wastewater. Similarly, the production of ROS and antioxidant enzymes were also increased. Chlorophyll, protein content, and enzyme production enhanced with CA (5 and 10 mM) mediation; however, ROS production and EL were reduced. Metals analysis showed that the maximum accumulation of Pb was in roots, while Cr and Ni in the stem which further increased under CA mediation. Overall, the metal accumulation ability was in the order of Pb > Ni > Cr under CA.
