RESUMO

Citrus essential oils are routinely adulterated because of the lack of regulations or reliable authentication methods. Unfortunately, the relatively simple chemical makeup and the tremendous price variations among Citrus varieties encouraged the interspecies adulteration of citrus oils. In this study, a sensitive UPLC-MS/MS method for the quantitation of 14 coumarins and furanocoumarins is developed and validated. This method was applied to screen the essential oils of 12 different Citrus species. This study, to our knowledge, represents the most comprehensive investigation of coumarin and furanocoumarin profiles across commercial-scale Citrus oils to date. Results show that the lowest amount was detected in calamansi oil. Expressed oil of Italian bergamot showed the highest furanocoumarin content and the highest level of any individual furanocoumarin (bergamottin). Notable differences were observed in the coumarin and furanocoumarin levels among oils of different crop varieties and origins within the same species. Potential correlations were observed between bergapten and xanthotoxin which matches with known biosynthetic pathways. We found patterns in furanocoumarin profiles that line up with known variations among the Citrus ancestral taxa. However, contrary to the literature, we also detected xanthotoxin in sweet orange and members of the mandarin taxon. Using multivariate analysis, we were able to divide the Citrus oils into 5 main groups and correlate them to the coumarin compositions.

A novel, simple and efficient capillary electrophoresis method was developed to simultaneous determination of six furanocoumarins (psoralen, isopsoralen, imperatorin, isoimperatorin, phellopterin, and cnidilin). The separation buffer consisted of 30 mM boric acid, 12 mM sulfobutylether-ß-cyclodextrin and 1.5 mM 2-hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin (pH 7.8); the voltage was 20 kV, the temperature was 25 °C and the detection wavelength was at 246 nm with a diode array detector (DAD). Under the above conditions, the analytes could be separated with high resolution in less than 7 min. This method was used to simultaneously determine the content of psoralen, imperatorin, isoimperatorin and phellopterin in Angelica Dahurica Radix. And good linearities were obtained with correlation coefficients from 0.9992 to 0.9999. The limits of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) and the limits of quantitation (LOQ, S/N = 10) ranged from 0.6 to 3.0 µg/mL and from 2.1 to 9.9 µg/mL, respectively. The recoveries ranged between 98.8% and 101.8%. The results indicated the method can achieve baseline separation and quantitative analysis of furanocoumarins in Chinese herbal medicines and formulations.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the most common form of sexual dysfunction which has been the topic of great interest through the history by all cultures. It is now among the most treated health problems in men of all ages that develop under the influence of lifestyle factors and some diseases. Plants are extensively used to cure sexual dysfunction for centuries. Roots of Prangos sp. have been used to improve sexual performance in Anatolian traditional medicine and are rich of coumarin, furanocoumarin and their derivatives. Scientific research is necessary to support and validate the ethno-traditional uses of these plants. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the root extracts of P. pabularia, P. uechtritzii and P. heyniae on erectile function and to isolate and identify the chemical compounds of the most active extract and reveal possible pharmacological mechanism of the major compound of the extract with the strongest relaxant effect in mouse corpus cavernosum (MCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The roots of plants were extracted with chloroform, n-hexane and methanol. The compounds were isolated from the extract by column chromatography and structures were identified by NMR and MS. The relaxant effects of extracts (10-7-10-4 g/mL), (+)-oxypeucedanin (10-7-10-4 M) and Na2S (10-7-3 × 10-3 M) were tested in MCC strips by DMT myograph. To investigate the mechanism, the synthesis inhibitors of aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA, 10-2 M) and nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 10-4 M) were used, respectively. H2S formation was evaluated basal and L-cysteine (L-cyst)-stimulated conditions by H2S microsensor. RESULTS: All extracts relaxed MCC in a concentration dependent manner. The maximum relaxing effects were achieved with chloroform extracts. Chloroform extract of P. pabularia (Pp-CE) was more potent than the others. Pp-CE-induced relaxations were significantly decreased by AOAA and L-NAME. (+)-Oxypeucedanin, the major compound of Pp-CE, induced relaxant responses and this effect was inhibited by AOAA, but not L-NAME. The relaxation of (+)-oxypeucedanin was found to be similar in view of Emax to positive control H2S donor Na2S. (+)-Oxypeucedanin increased L-cyst-stimulated H2S formation. Augmentation of H2S synthesis with (+)-oxypeucedanin was inhibited by AOAA. CONCLUSIONS: Pp-CE has the strongest effect on relaxation of MCC and this result supports the traditional aphrodisiac use of P. pabularia root extract in Anatolia. The pharmacological mechanisms of Pp-CE to relax MCC involve NO and H2S formation. (+)-Oxypeucedanin could be responsible for the H2S-mediated relaxations of Pp-CE in MCC.

Bufei-Huoxue Capsule (BFHX) was applied to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in China. It is composed of Astragali Radix, Paeoniae Radix Rubra, and Psoralea Fructus. A sensitive and reliable ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated to quantify the eight main bioactive compounds (psoralen, isopsoralen, neobabaisoflavone, corylin, bavachin, astragaloside IV, ononin and formononetin) in rat plasma after oral administration of BFHX. Osthol was used as an internal standard (IS). Plasma samples were pretreated with methanol to precipitate protein. Chromatographic separation was accomplished using Hypersil GOLDTM C18 column (2.1 mm × 100 mm, 1.9 µm) with a gradient elution profile and a mobile phase consisting of (A) 0.1% formic acid in water and (B) acetonitrile and the flow rate was set at 0.2 mL/min. Multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode was applied to perform mass spectrometric analyses. All calibration curves were linear (r > 0.9908) in tested ranges. The intra- and inter-day accuracy and precisions of eight compounds at three different concentration levels were within the acceptable limits. The extraction recovery was within the range of 76.4 âˆ¼ 105.2% and the matrix effects were within the range of 88.3 âˆ¼ 115.0% (RSD ≤ 15.6%). The dilution effects were within the range of 90.2 âˆ¼ 114.9%. These 8 compounds were stable under the tested conditions. So the developed method was valid to evaluate the pharmacokinetic study of eight bioactive compounds after oral administration of BFHX.

The present study aims to determine the volatile compositions of 15 different accessions of native Sardinian populations of Bituminaria morisiana (Pignatti & Metlesics) Greuter, Bituminaria bituminosa (L.) C. H. Stirt. (B. b.), and Spanish native accessions of B. bituminosa. Furthermore, we particularly focused on the essential oil characterization of these accessions and discriminated within populations with low furocoumarin content useful for fodder production in Mediterranean environments or furocoumarin extraction for pharmaceutical utilization. The plant extracts were analyzed by GC/MS, showing great variability in the content and composition. No differences were found in Bituminaria bituminosa (L.) C.H. Stirt. var. bituminosa essential oils, while the varieties Bituminaria bituminosa (L.) C.H. Stirt. var. crassiuscula P. Méndez, Fern. Galván & A. Santos and Bituminaria bituminosa (L.) C.H. Stirt. var. albomarginata P. Méndez, Fern. Galván & A. Santos are characterized by the presence of a high concentration of long-chain alcohols and of salicylic acid benzylic ester. In B. bituminosa var. albomarginata, we observed a different profile with predominance of a large concentration of alcohols as dodecanol and tetradecanol. The endemic B. morisiana can be identified for the predominant presence of farnesene. In methanolic fractions, we detected the presence of maltol, methyl citrate, methyl cumarate, santonin, and methyl linoleate. B. morisiana showed a low content of psoralens, and the accession of B. morisiana, from Siliqua indicated the presence of apocynin.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is frequently used to treat non-muscle invasive bladder cancer due its low toxicity and high selectivity. Since recurrence often occurs, alternative approaches and/or designs of combined therapies to improve PDT effectiveness are needed. This work aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of 4,6,4'-trimethylangelicin (TMA) photoactivated by blue light (BL) on human bladder cancer T24 cells and investigate the mechanisms underlying its biological effects. TMA/BL exerted antiproliferative activity through the induction of apoptosis without genotoxicity, as demonstrated by the expression levels of phospho-H2AX, an indicator of DNA double-stranded breaks. It also modulated the Wnt canonical signal pathway by increasing the phospho-ß-catenin and decreasing the nuclear levels of ß-catenin. The inhibition of this pathway was due to the modulation of the GSK3ß phosphorylation state (Tyr 216) that induces a proteasomal degradation of ß-catenin. Indeed, a partial recovery of nuclear ß-catenin expression and reduction of its phosphorylated form after treatment with LiCl were detected. As demonstrated by RT-PCR and cytofluorimetric analysis, TMA/BL also decreased the expression of CD44v6, a marker of cancer stem cells. Taken together, our data suggest that TMA photoactivated by BL may represent an interesting option for the photochemotherapy of noninvasive bladder carcinomas, since this treatment is able to inhibit key pathways for tumour growth and progression in the absence of genotoxic effects.

Eremurus persicus (Jaub. & Spach) Boiss. belonging to Xanthorrhoeaceae family is an endemic medicinal plant widely distributed in Iran. Its leaves have been traditionally used as a food and also as medicinal plant. Regarding the widespread application of E. persicus in Iranian folk medicine, and the insignificant investigation of its components, this study aimed at the isolation and identification of major secondary metabolites of this plant. By applying various chromatographic techniques, corchoionoside A (1), 4-amino-4-carboxychroman-2-one (2), isoorientin (3), ziganein 5-methyl ether (4), auraptene (5), and imperatorin (6) were isolated from the EtOAc and CHCl3 fractions of the crude extract. Except isoorientin (3), all the identified phytoconstituents were reported for the first time from Eremurus genus.

KEY MESSAGE: Psoralen synthase and angelicin synthase responsible for the formation of psoralen and angelicin in Peucedanum praeruptorum Dunn were identified and functionally characterized, respectively. Furanocoumarins were reported to possess several activities such as anticancer, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective, and function as phytotoxin and allelochemical in plants. Furanocoumarins are the main bioactive ingredient in P. praeruptorum which is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine. Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), 4-coumarate: CoA ligase (4CL), p-coumaroyl CoA 2'-hyfroxylase (C2'H) were cloned previously to elucidate the biosynthetic mechanism of coumarin lactone ring. However, the genes involved in complex coumarins in P. praeruptorum have not been explored. Herein, putative psoralen synthase CYP71AJ49 and angelicin synthase CYP71AJ51 were cloned from P. praeruptorum. In vivo and in vitro yeast assays were conducted to confirm their activities. Furthermore, the results of High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS) verified that CYP71AJ49 catalyzed the conversion of marmesin to psoralen, and CYP71AJ51 catalyzed columbianetin to angelicin. Subsequently, the expression profile showed that CYP71AJ49 and CYP71AJ51 were easily affected by environmental conditions, especially UV and temperature. The genes tissue-specific expression and compounds tissue-specific distribution pattern indicated the existence of substance transport in P. praeruptorum. Phylogenetic analysis was conducted with 27 CYP71AJs, CYP71AJ49 and CYP71AJ51 were classified in I-4 and I-2, respectively. These results provide further insight to understand the biosynthetic mechanism of complex coumarins.

Recently, integrated and sustainable methods for extracting active substances from plant materials using green solvents, i.e., ionic liquids, have gained increasing attention. Ionic liquids showsuperiority over conventional organic solvents; however, they also exhibit negative factors and problems, such as high viscosity, poor water intermiscibility, intensive foaming and poor affinity for fat-soluble substances. The proposed method utilizes ultrasonic-enhanced surface-active ionic liquid-based extraction and defoaming (UESILED) to improve the extraction efficiency of ionic liquids. Single-factor experiments and a Box-Behnken design (BBD) were utilized to optimize the extraction procedure. The optimal conditions were as follows: extraction solvent, [C10MIM]Br; ultrasonic treatment time, 28 min; ultrasonic irradiation power, 437 W; liquid-solid ratio, 10 mL/g; particle size, 60 ~ 80 mesh; ultrasonication temperature, 313 K; and [C10MIM]Br solution concentration, 0.5 mol/L. In comparison with those of other reference extraction methods, the proposed method exhibited higher yields of two furocoumarins and operational feasibility. Moreover, the mechanism of UESILED was elaborated in terms of accelerating infiltration, dissolution and defoaming. The feasible and efficient ultrasonic-enhanced ionic liquid-based extraction established in this study strongly contributes to overcoming the limitations of ionic liquid solvents. The present research indicates that this improved process will be beneficial for the extraction of other fat-soluble substances and provides promising concepts and experimental data.

Prenatal stress (PS) can lead to impaired spatial learning and memory in offspring. Imperatorin (IMP) is a naturally occurring furanocoumarin with many pharmacological properties. However, the effects of IMP on cognitive impairment induced by PS and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated the protective effect of IMP treatment after PS on learning and memory deficits in female offspring at postnatal 60 days. After treating prenatally-stressed offspring with IMP (15 and 30 mg/kg) for 28 days, we found that IMP increased body weight and ameliorated spatial learning and memory and working memory deficits in female offspring rats. Meanwhile, hippocampal Glu and serum corticosterone levels in prenatally-stressed offspring were significantly decreased after IMP administration. Additionally, IMP treatment significantly increased BDNF, TrkB, CaMKII, and CREB mRNA expression in the hippocampus of offspring rats. Furthermore, PS-mediated induction of RKIP protein and mRNA expression and glucocorticoid receptor protein expression in the hippocampus of offspring rats were significantly decreased by IMP treatment, and the protein expression of BDNF and TrkB and relative levels of p-EKR/ERK, p-CaMKIIα/CaMKIIα, and p-CREB/CREB were remarkably increased after IMP treatment. Taken together, IMP can ameliorate PS-induced learning and memory deficits through BDNF/TrkB and ERK/CaMKIIα/CREB signaling pathway and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Furanocoumarins are a class of natural compounds produced by several plants, including those consumed by humans. They have been used medicinally in eastern countries for ages. Given the growing body of evidence about their anticancer potential and observations that naturally occurring compounds potentiate the antitumor activity of chemotherapeutics, more attention is paid to elucidation of the nature of furanocoumarins and the possibility of using thereof in practice. The general mechanism by which furanocoumarins eliminate cancer cells is based on cell cycle blockage and initiation of programmed death like apoptosis or autophagy. The precise molecular mechanism of such an action depends on the chemical structure of furanocoumarins, which is based on the furan ring attached to the coumarin backbone in a linear or angular form as well as the type, location, and number of the substituents attached. The review summarizes the current evidence of the antitumor properties of linear and angular furanocoumarins with special emphasis on the molecular mechanism of elimination of cancer cells via apoptosis and autophagy. Negative aspects of the use of coumarins in anticancer therapy will be also discussed especially in the context of their phototoxicity and potential cancerogenic effect.

Furanocoumarins are the main compounds responsible for the food-drug interactions known as the grapefruit effect, which is caused by the inhibition of CYP3A4-mediated drug metabolism. We evaluated the effects of two new, low-furanocoumarin grapefruit cultivars on CYP3A4 activity and the roles of different furanocoumarins, individually and together with other juice compounds, in the inhibition of CYP3A4 by grapefruit. Whereas a standard grapefruit cultivar inhibited CYP3A4 activity in a dose-dependent manner, neither of the two examined low-furanocoumarin cultivars had an inhibitory effect. Despite the fact that bergamottin and 6',7'-dihydroxybergamottin are weak inhibitors of CYP3A4, their relatively high levels in grapefruit make them the leading cause of the grapefruit effect. We found that furanocoumarins together with other juice compounds inhibit CYP3A4 in an additive manner. In silico docking simulation was employed, and differentiated between high- and low-potency inhibitors, suggesting that modeling may be useful for identifying potentially harmful food-drug interactions.

Psoralen (P) and isopsoralen (IP) are the main active ingredients in the dried fruit of Psoralen corylifolia L. (PC), with a wide range of pharmacology activities. The intestinal bacteria biotransformation plays a central role in the metabolism of the complex ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Our study aimed to investigated the metabolic profile of P and IP in the intestinal condition, co-cultured with human fecal bacteria anaerobically. Four bio-transforming products were obtained, including 6,7-furano-hydrocoumaric acid (P-1) and 6,7-furano-hydro- coumaric acid methyl ester (P-2), which transformed from P, and 5,6-furano-hydrocoumaric acid (IP-1) and 5,6-furano-hydrocoumaric acid methyl ester (IP-2), which were transformed from IP. It is worth mentioning that IP-2 is a new compound that has not been published. Their structures were analyzed based on their spectroscopic data. Moreover, a highly sensitive ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method was used to characterize the metabolic pathways of P, IP, and their bio-transforming products in the reaction samples. In addition, the dampening effects against the oxidative stress of P, IP, and their bio-transforming products by human intestinal flora were estimated in vitro via the human colorectal cells (HCT116) and heterogeneous human epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (Caco-2) cell lines. The results showed that the metabolites have stronger activity than P and IP, which possibly provides a basis for elucidating the treating mechanisms of PC extract against inflammatory bowel disease.

Citrus junos Tanaka is a traditional medicine for treating coughs, dyspepsia, diabetes, asthma, neuralgia, and inflammatory disorders, and is distributed in Asia, especially in Korea, Japan, and China. This study aimed to use bioactivity-guided fractionation to find therapeutic phytochemicals from C. junos seeds, which can attenuate inflammatory responses. Nine coumarins (1-9) were isolated from the methanolic extract of C. junos seed shells and the inhibitory effects against inflammatory mediators were investigated using murine macrophages. Among the coumarins, compound 3, isogosferol (ISO), more potently attenuated the production of nitric oxide (NO) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells. ISO also inhibited the expression of inducible nitric oxide (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Additionally, the phosphorylation of extracellular-regulated kinases (pERK)1/2 was reduced by ISO. We confirmed that ISO attenuated the release of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß), which is a central mediator of the inflammatory response. These results demonstrate that ISO from C. junos seed shells may be a potent therapeutic candidate for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The fruit of Fructus liquidambaris, which is recently being used for cancer treatment, has a history to be used as a traditional medicine in China for thousands of years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten kg of dried F. liquidambaris was obtained with 70% alcohol-water solution under reflux for three times. The condensed extract was obtained from petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and N-butyl alcohol, respectively. Ethyl acetate extract was subjected to silica gel column, Sephadex LH-20, ODS column chromatography and RP-HPLC column chromatography to yield a new compound (1). The structure was identified through intensive analysis of NMR and MS spectra. The antitumor mechanism of the furanocoumarin A on human lung cancer A549 cells was confirmed by detecting the apoptosis-related proteins. RESULTS: Furanocoumarin A (1), a novel furanocoumarin constituent was isolated and identified from F. Liquidambaris. The IC50 value of furanocoumarin A on A549 cell lines was 65.28±5.36µM obtained by the method of MTT. The compound could induce the apoptosis of A549 cells by inducing 21.5% early apoptosis and 32.4% late apoptosis at the concentration of 60µmol/L. Western blot analysis indicated that protein expressions of p53, caspase 3 and Bax increased in a dose-dependent manner between the concentrations from 40 to 80µM. The protein expression of Bcl-2 decreased the concentration of 60 and 80µM. The ratio of Bcl-2 to Bax was inversely proportional to the dose concentration. CONCLUSION: Furanocoumarin A could be a novel anticancer agent from herbal medicine.

INTRODUCTION: A variety of organic compounds has been reported to have antibacterial activity. However, antimicrobial resistance is one of the main problems of current anti-infective therapy, and the development of novel antibacterials is one of the main challenges of current drug discovery. METHODS: Using our previously developed dual-reporter High-Throughput Screening (HTS) platform, we identified a series of furanocoumarins as having high antibacterial activity. The construction of the reporter system allows us to differentiate three mechanisms of action for the active compounds: inhibition of protein synthesis (induction of Katushka2S), DNA damaging (induction of RFP) or other (inhibition of bacterial growth without reporter induction). RESULTS: Two primary hit-molecules of furanocoumarin series demonstrated relatively low MIC values comparable to that observed for Erythromycin (Ery) against E. coli and weakly induced both reporters. Dose-dependent translation inhibition was shown using in vitro luciferase assay, however it was not confirmed using C14-test. A series of close structure analogs of the identified hits was obtained and investigated using the same screening platform. Compound 19 was found to have slightly lower MIC value (15.18 µM) and higher induction of Katushka2S reporter in contrast to the parent structures. Moreover, translation blockage was clearly identified using both in vitro luciferase assay and C14 test. The standard cytotoxicity test revealed a relatively low cytotoxicity of the most active molecules. CONCLUSION: High antibacterial activity in combination with low cytotoxicity was demonstrated for a series of furanocoumarins. Further optimization of the described structures may result in novel and attractive lead compounds with promising antibacterial efficiency.

A simple and efficient method based on ultrafiltration with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry was used for the rapid screening and identification of ligands in the extracts of Stellera chamaejasme. The bound ligands, i.e. daphnoretin, isopimpinellin, chamaechromone, neochamaejasmin A, and chamaejasmine (purity of 96.8, 90.75, 91.41, 93.98, and 98.91%, respectively), were separated by semi-preparative high-performance liquid chromatography combined with high-speed counter-current chromatography. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report the detection of potent lipoxidase and lactate dehydrogenase inhibitors in Stellera chamaejasme extracts. The results demonstrate that our method of ultrafiltration with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry combined with mixed chromatography can be used to screen and confirm the bioactivity of all isolated compounds. This method also eliminates the need for separation of inactive compounds, thereby improving efficiency when studying bioactive substances. For some complex mixtures, neither semi-preparative high-performance liquid chromatography nor high-speed counter-current chromatography can purify all the target active compounds with high purity in a one-step separation. The combination of the two methods allow for efficient purification of target bioactive compounds with different polarities and physicochemical properties based on their complementary properties.

The furocoumarin backbone is a promising platform for chemical modifications aimed at creating new pharmaceutical agents. However, the high level of biological activity of furocoumarins is associated with a number of negative effects. For example, some of the naturally occurring ones and their derivatives can show genotoxic and mutagenic properties as a result of their forming crosslinks with DNA molecules. Therefore, a particularly important area for the chemical modification of natural furocoumarins is to reduce the negative aspects of their bioactivity. By studying a group of 21 compounds-1,2,3-triazolyl modified derivatives of furocoumarin and peucedanin-using the SOS chromotest, the Ames test, and DNA-comet assays, we revealed modifications that can neutralize the structure's genotoxic properties. Theoretical aspects of the interaction of the compound library were studied using molecular modeling and this identified the leading role of the polyaromatic molecular core that takes part in stacking-interactions with the pi-systems of the nitrogenous bases of DNA.

Furocoumarins are known for their phototoxic and potential carcinogenic effects. These types of compounds have previously been reported from fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.), a widely used medicinal plant and spice; however, no reliable quantitative data are available on the occurrence of these compounds in fennel fruits. For the first time, we report a comprehensive analysis of fennel fruit samples of different origins, representing a wide range of accessions for their furocoumarin content. Psoralene, 5-methoxypsoralene (bergapten), and imperatorin contents of 33 fennel samples were analyzed using a sensitive liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method. When applied at the highest therapeutic dose described in the monograph issued by the European Medicines Agency, the furocoumarin content of the fruits ranged up to 1.22 µg/d, which is below the most restrictive recommendations. Based on our findings, fennel consumption can be considered as safe, at least based on its low furocoumarin content.

Hexane extracts of Heracleum verticillatum, H. sibiricum, H. angustisectum, and H. ternatum were studied for their furanocoumarin content antioxidant potential and acetylcholinesterase and α-amylase inhibitory activities. Quantification of the furanocoumarins was performed by 1 H-NMR. Pimpinellin was found to be the main component in the roots of all studied species. Bergapten and imperatorin were the major compounds in the fruits of H. sibiricum and H. verticillatum, respectively, while byakangelicol dominated in H. angustisectum and H. ternatum fruits. The leaf and fruit extracts of H. angustisectum demonstrated the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity and TEAC (IC50 0.58 mg/mL and 1.83 mm, respectively). The root extracts of H. verticillatum and H. angustisectum were found to be the most effective against acetylcholinesterase (IC50 0.30 and 0.34 mg/mL, respectively). The studied extracts were not active or demonstrated a weak inhibitory effect (%Inh. up to 29.7) towards α-amylase.
