RESUMO

This study determined the effects of dietary supplementation of rhamnolipids (RLS) on the growth performance, gut morphology, immune function, intestinal volatile fatty acid, and microflora community in Linnan yellow broilers. A total of 480 1-day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned to groups for supplementation with one of the following for 56 d: no supplement (control), 30 mg/kg bacitracin (ANT), 500 mg/kg RLS, or 1,000 mg/kg RLS (RLS2). The RLS2 diet was found to improve the final BW and ADG on day 56. The RLS diet reduced jejunal crypt depth, increased jejunal villus length, and increased serum IgA, IgM, IgY, IL-1ß, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels. The RLS broilers had higher cecum concentrations of acetic acid, propionic acid, butyrate, isobutyric acid, valerate, and isovalerate. High-throughput sequencing indicated that RLS affected microbial quantity and diversity in the cecum. Bacterial richness was higher in the RLS broilers than the ANT broilers. The RLS broilers had higher relative abundances of Megasphaera hypermegale and Lachnospiraceae bacterium 19gly4 on day 28 and Clostridium spiroforme and Alistipes obesi on day 56. These results suggest that RLS supplementation improves growth performance, benefits the intestinal villus morphology, regulates host immune function, and raises intestinal volatile fatty acid content and the relative abundance of the gut microbiota in broiler chickens.

RESUMO

Unraveling the genetic diversity of livestock species is central to understanding their value and importance for conservation and improvement in diverse production environments. In developing countries, information on genetic attributes of many livestock species is unfortunately scanty to support well-informed decision-making upon relevant management strategies. This study aimed at investigating allelic variability, genetic diversity, and genetic relationships of 10 indigenous chicken ecotypes from Southern Highlands of Tanzania using the Major Histocompatibility Complex-linked LEI0258 marker. A total of 400 DNA samples, 40 per ecotype, were genotyped by capillary electrophoresis. Thirty different alleles with sizes ranging from 197 to 569 bp were determined. The number of alleles ranged from 17 (Itunduma) to 21 (Mbeya), with an average of 19.20 alleles per ecotype. Allelic polymorphism was further evaluated through genotyping by Sanger sequencing. Thirty-three DNA samples with different fragment sizes were re-amplified and their alleles sequenced to depict polymorphism based on a combination of two repeat regions at 12 and 13 bp, respectively, and flanking regions with SNP and indels. The repeat region at 13 bp appeared 1 to 28 times, whereas the region at 12 bp appeared 3 to 19 times in all sequenced fragments. The numbers of indels and SNP determined were 7 and 9, respectively. From capillary electrophoresis, the Chunya and Msimbazi ecotypes exhibited the highest genetic diversity (0.937), whereas the lowest value (0.910) was observed from the Mbarali ecotype, with an average of 0.925. The Namtumbo and Wanging'ombe ecotypes showed high inbreeding coefficients (FIS > 0.05), whereas a high excess heterozygote value (FIS = -0.098) was observed from the Njombe ecotype. Two percent of the genetic diversity was due to differences among ecotypes, and the rest was due to differences among individuals within the ecotypes. Despite the overall low genetic differentiation, both fragment and sequencing analyses depicted a high allelic and genetic variability across 10 chicken ecotypes. These results therefore, underscore the importance of establishing appropriate conservation and management strategies to capitalize on observed variability and maintain genetic flexibility across diverse production environments.

504 (five hundred four) 1 day old male chicks from a commercial broiler line (Ag Ross 308) were used, distributed in 12 treatments, with 6 replicates per treatment. The experimental design was casually blocked and treatments were organized in a 2x2x3 factorial arrangement: two available phosphorus levels (0.45 and 0.34%), two phytase inclusion levels (0 and 1200 FTU/kg) and three crude protein levels (22.5; 20.5 and 18.5%). Tibia calcium percentage was influenced by protein and phosphorus levels in the diet, when using phytase. Tibia ash levels showed a linear effect when enzymes were added and showed a quadractic effect without it, and the higher value was observed with 22.5% crude protein in the diet. With higher phosphorus levels a linear effect was observed between crude protein in the diet and tibia ash weights, as a higher protein level had lower tíbia ash weight.

RESUMO

We assessed the extent to which the removal of fat source, and consequently its compounds, such as linoleic acid, can affect the performance of broilers. We used 600 male Cobb 500 day old chicks. The birds were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design, with five treatments and six replicates of 20 birds each. The treatments were: (T1) diet - positive control (PC), which met the nutritional needs; (T2) diet - negative control (CN), a reduction of 100kcal/kg and low linoleic acid content; (T3): diet - negative control reformulated for low linoleic acid content and a set of Quantum phytase XT and Econase XT 25 (BAL + QFit-Eco), (T4): diet - negative control reformulated, with the percentage of linoleic acid adjusted to an intermediate value between the value of the diet and diet CP and CN to use a set of Quantum phytase XT and XT Econase 25 (IAL + QFit-Eco) and (T5): diet - negative control reformulated, with the percentage of linoleic acid adjusted to a value similar to that of the positive control diet and joint use of Quantum phytase XT and XT Econase 25 (AAL + QFit-Eco). The joint use of Quantum Phytase and Econase promoted improvement in the performance of broilers from 1 to 21 days. The greatest weight gain was obtained with diets containing percentages of total fat and linoleic acids. Dietary supplementation with enzymes resulted in higher levels of calcium in the tibia, whatever the percentage of linoleic studied.

This study evaluated the effect of the supplementation with organic microminerals on performance and egg quality of semi-heavy layers. Dekalk Brown layers (n=216) were distributed according to a completely randomized design into four treatments, nine repetitions and six birds per repetition. The experiment lasted 140 days and was comprised of five 28 day cycles. The basal diet was formulated to fulfill the nutritional requirements and was supplemented with organic or inorganic minerals, resulting in four treatments: T1 - basal + 100% inorganic minerals; T2 - basal + 100% organic minerals; T3 - basal + 66% organic minerals; T4 - basal + 33% organic minerals. Egg production, egg weight, egg mass, feed conversion for dozen and mass, albumen percentage, specific gravity, shell thickness and relative gross margin have better results when the inorganic minerals are replaced with 66% organic.

Among the micronutrients, vitamins deserve special attention for participating as cofactors in metabolic reactions and allowing greater efficiency of synthesis systems in an animal organism. In the midst of vitamins, riboflavin presents some particularities, especially for poultry, because it is probably the most limiting vitamin in this species. Riboflavin is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, presenting key role in the electron transport chain, the process of cellular respiration and in the process of obtaining energy from the cell, acting in the maintenance of the integrity of mucous membranes, skin, eyes and nervous system. Riboflavin deficiency results in changes in metabolism and pathological effect in various tissues in which the epidermis and the myelin sheath of axons are the most involved. The main clinical sign of riboflavin deficiency in young poultry is the curled toe paralysis. This paper aims to report the occurrence of a clinical case of riboflavin deficiency in a batch of commercial broiler chickens (Gallus gallus) fed exclusively with vegetable diet that had curled toe paralysis at four days of age. Following presumptive diagnosis, the batch was supplemented with 2.5 mg/kg of riboflavin in drinking water, and showed significant improvement some hours after the beginning of supplementation; 95% of the poultry recovered up to twelve days after supplementation and the remaining 5% had persistent clinical signs until slaughter.

RESUMO

The effect of Bacillus coagulans ZJU0616 with different concentrations supplemented as probiotic was evaluated on growth performance, feed conversion ratio, survival rate, breast chemical composition, and meat quality of Guangxi Yellow chicken. Birds were randomly segregated into 12 groups so that 3 replicates were available for each of the 3 treatments (T-1, T-2, and T-3) and control groups. The control groups were fed a basal diet without any probiotic and other groups were fed the diets that consisted of 3 probiotic levels at initial concentrations of 1.0 x 10(6) cfu.g(-1) (T-1), 2.0 x 10(6) cfu.g(-1) (T-2), and 5.0 x 10(6) cfu.g(-1) (T-3). The lowest final weight and daily weight gain were found in control groups (P < 0.05) and there were no significant differences among probiotic-treated groups. Significantly lower feed conversion ratio and higher survival rate were observed in T-2 and T-3 than that of the control. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in contents of breast chemical composition including moisture, CP, crude fat, and crude ash among all groups. For the meat quality parameter assays, the pH, shear force, and drip loss were used as indicators. As for pH values of breasts, no significant difference was found across all treatments. Higher shear force was observed (P < 0.05) in T-2 compared with T-1 and the control. Similar significant difference was also observed in T-1 compared with the control. However, there was no significant difference in shear force between T-3 and the other probiotic treatment groups (T-1 and T-2). As for probiotic-treated groups, there was significant difference (P < 0.05) in breast drip loss compared with that of the control (6.22 +/- 0.18%), with the lowest drip loss found in T-3 (5.38 +/- 0.25%). However, no significant difference was observed in drip loss between T-2 and T-3.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To establish a convenient and accurate method of DNA molecular marker for the identification of corium stomachium galli. METHOD: Cytb mtDNA sequences of Gallus gallus domestica and three other species of poultry were downloaded from Genbank. Species-specific PCR primers were designed according to the differential DNA fragments of the cytb genes. PCR tests were performed with the DNAs extracted from G. gallus domestica, three other poultry species and domestic mammal animals. RESULT: The specific primers of G. gallus domestica could only amplify the cytb mtDNA of G. gallus domestica. CONCLUSION: The primers are specific to G. gallus domestica mtDNA and can used to discern Corium stomachium from the false medicine.

RESUMO

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is one of the most important orexigenic agents in central regulation of feeding behavior, body weight and energy homeostasis in domestic chickens. To examine differences in the hypothalamic NPY between layer-type and meat-type of chickens, which are two divergent kinds of the domestic chickens in feeding behavior and body weight, we detected mRNA levels of NPY in hypothalamic infundibular nucleus (IN), paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) of these two types of chickens using one-step real time RT-PCR. The meat-type chicken had more food daily (about 1.7 folds) and greater body weights (about 1.5 folds) and brain weights than the layer-type chicken at the age of 14 d. In the meat-type of chicken, NPY mRNA levels of the IN and PVN were significantly greater than those of the LHA, and were not significantly different between the IN and PVN. However, in the layer-type of chicken, NPY mRNA levels were significantly greater in the IN than those in the LHA and PVN, and were not significantly different between the PVN and LHA. In all these hypothalamic regions, the layer-type of chicken had significantly higher NPY mRNA levels than the meat-type chicken did. These results suggest the expression of NPY in the hypothalamus has a type-dependent pattern in domestic chickens.

RESUMO

1. In a cross-over trial, the egg cholesterol and fatty acid composition of Araucana hens was compared with those of two commercial breeds (Lohmann Selected Leghorn and ISA Brown) under two feeding regimes, either high (Hn-3) or low (Ln-3) in long-chain n-3 fatty acids. 2. The Hn-3 diet was formed by isocaloric substitution of animal fat in the control diet (Ln-3) by a dry product containing stabilised fish oil with standardised concentrations of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). 3. Both breed and diet had influences on egg composition, without interactions. 4. The Araucana breed showed lower feed intake and lower egg weights than the other two breeds. The yolk weight was similar, leading to a much higher yolk:albumen ratio in the Araucana eggs. 5. In comparison to commercial breeds, Araucanas produced eggs with higher cholesterol content per g of yolk, which was even more pronounced when expressed per g of egg, due to the high yolk content of the eggs. The cholesterol content of an egg remained unchanged by the diet, irrespective of the dietary fat source. 6. Changing to the Hn-3 diet led to greater concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and lower concentrations of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) contents in the yolk, without a change in the ratio of saturated (SFA) to unsaturated fatty acids (UFA). 7. Within the PUFA, the n-3 fatty acids increased at the expense of the n-6 fatty acids, indicating a competition between n-3 and n-6 fatty acids for incorporation in the yolk.

RESUMO

Enrichment of eggs with folate is possible when dietary folic acid levels are increased. However, development of optimal strategies for the production of folate-enriched eggs requires knowledge as to differences due to strain of bird and a greater understanding of the factors limiting egg folate deposition. To this end, a study was designed to determine the response of two leghorn strains that differ in production performance. Hyline W36 and W98 hens (n = 6 per diet) received a barley-based ration containing 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, or 128 mg/kg of crystalline folic acid for 21 d. Response criteria included production parameters, measures of blood folate status, and egg folate content. Significant (P < 0.05) main effects of folate supplementation were observed for egg folate content and plasma folate, which increased, and homocysteine concentrations, which decreased with supplementation; performance, however, was not affected. The Hyline W98 strain had significantly (P < 0.05) higher total egg and yolk weights and feed consumption when compared with the W36. Significant (P < 0.05) ration x strain interactions were observed for egg and yolk weight, egg folate content, and plasma homocysteine. The higher egg mass producing strain, Hyline W98, benefited from increased folic acid through a reduction in plasma homocysteine concentrations, suggesting that this strain has a higher requirement for folate than the W36 strain. Overall, egg folate content is maximized when crystalline folic acid is supplemented to the diet at 2 mg/kg or higher. Higher levels of egg folate are not achieved due to the saturation of the precursor pool for egg folate deposition.

RESUMO

The "Qi" deficiency and "Yin" deficiency rats were fed with Chinese Taihe Chicken or common Chicken. The results showed: Chinese Taihe Chicken and common Chicken could all improve in part the "Qi" deficiency of rats caused by forced swimming, furthermore, the effect of Chinese Taihe Chicken was better than that of common Chicken. Chinese Taihe Chicken could obviously reduce the activity of adenosine triphosphatase of kidney tissue of "Yin" deficiency rats caused by injecting thyroxine. It suggested that Chinese Taihe Chicken could nourish the "Yin".
