RESUMO

Sixty-one dogs with histologically confirmed, untreated, high-grade lymphoma were evaluated and treated with doxorubicin (DOX, 30 mg/m2) alone. Forty-seven dogs (77%) achieved a complete response. Forty-six of the 47 dogs were randomized to receive five additional treatments with doxorubicin +/- whole-body hyperthermia (WBH). Median disease-free survival for the group treated with DOX alone (n = 22) was 189 days and for the DOX plus WBH (n = 24) was 239 days (p = 0.17). After the analysis was adjusted for stratification variables (i.e. institution, weight, stage), the effect of heat on disease-free survival remained statistically insignificant (p = 0.10), but suggested a tendency towards increased disease-free survival in hyperthermic dogs. Intact male dogs had significantly shorter disease-free survival than neutered males and neutered females (178 days vs 266 days, respectively; p = 0.013). No intact females were treated. Body weight, when evaluated as a continuous variable, was found to be a negative prognostic factor (p = 0.036). Tumour volume, stage and institution were not significant. Clinical incidence of cardiac dysfunction was not increased in dogs receiving DOX and WBH; however, post-mortem histological analysis of cardiac tissue suggested that the combined therapy of DOX and WBH was associated with greater myocyte degeneration (p = 0.012) and a tendency for increased cardiac fibrosis (p = 0.08). We concluded that continued refinement of DOX-WBH protocols is warranted, and may ultimately result in significant therapeutic improvement.

RESUMO

Radiation alone can be used to treat mast cell tumors that are not likely to metastasize (that is, differentiated or localized lymphorecticular tumors). In patients with mast cell tumors that are likely to metastasize (that is, undifferentiated, metastatic mast cell disease or generalized lymphoreticular neoplasms), radiation should not be used as the only treatment agent. In these patients, treatment combinations of hyperthermia/chemotherapy and radiation/hyperthermia/chemotherapy have been shown to have promise, but these treatment combinations need to be evaluated in prospective trials.

RESUMO

Between January 1973 and September 1979, 2,092 horses and ponies were evaluated for immunologic disorders. A total of 418 abnormalities were detected in 416 (20%) of the animals tested. Disorders encountered were failure or partial failure of colostral immunoglobulin transfer from mare to foal (228 cases), combined immunodeficiency (159 cases), selective immunoglobulin M deficiency (19 cases), agammaglobulinemia (3 cases), transient hypogammaglobulinemia (2 cases), and lymphosarcoma (7 cases). Four conclusions were drawn from the study. (1) Immunologic abnormalities occur commonly in horses and ponies. (2) Failure and partial failure of passive transfer were the most common disorders, involving 19.7% of surveyed foals at risk. (3) Combined immunodeficiency remains a disease limited to Arabian horses. (4) Considering the high frequency of immunologic disorders in horses and the availability of diagnostic tests for the disorders, older animals with recurrent infections as well as all newborn foals should be evaluated for immune disorders.

RESUMO

Thirty-two dogs with naturally occurring multicentric lymphosarcoma were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. One half of the animals received combination chemotherapy plus vitamin injections (controls) while the other half received indentical chemotherapy plus injections of chemically-modified tumor cell extract in Freund's complete adjuvant (vaccinates). Clinical staging revealed no bias between groups but showed that prognosis could be closely correlated with the severity of disease at initial presentation. Twenty dogs (62%), including 11 vaccinates and 9 controls, responded favorably to chemotherapy and were evaluated for length of first remission and total survival time. Both parameters were significantly longer in vaccinated dogs than in controls. These data suggest that immunological stimulation may be a helpful adjunct to conventional therapy in selected types of cancer when immunological principles are observed.
