RESUMO

The aim of this work was to perform the phytochemical analysis as well as antioxidant and anticholinesterase potential of hot water and methanolic extracts from Mentha pulegium L., Lamiaceae, wild growing in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a plant that is traditionally used in Bosnia and Herzegovina medicine to treat gastrointestinal and neurological disorders. By HPLC-DAD analysis of tested extracts, 15 phenol compounds were identified and quantified. Rosmarinic acid was the most abundant compound in both extracts, followed by ellagic acid, eriodictyol, naringenin and chlorogenic acid. Both extracts were demonstrated good radical scavenging potential, reducing power and ability to inhibit lipid oxidation. The tested extracts also showed low ability to inhibit protein oxidation and low or no acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibition potential. The promising radical scavenging potential, reducing power and lipid protection potential of tested extracts indicates that the extracts of M. pulegium could be useful in preventing free radical linked diseases, as well as food protecting antioxidants.

RESUMO

Medicinal plants are known as important sources of secondary metabolites. Because of the economic value of pennyroyal [Mentha pulegium L. (Lamiaceae)] in food industries, propagation of this valuable plant has special importance. Plant cell suspension culture can increase some produced components. The aim of this research was performing cell culture for induction of some secondary metabolites of M. pulegium and compares it with native one. The MS medium was used for suspension culture. To investigate quantitative materials, 4 levels of yeast extract elicitor (20, 40, 60 and 80 mg/L) and salicylic acid in 4 levels (2, 4, 6 and 8 mg/L) were used. Obtained extracts were analyzed by GC-MS. Statistical analysis showed that the amount of limonene, menthone, menthol and α-pinene were more than mentioned compounds in natural plant as control. The maximum amount of this metabolites were obtained as limonene (in 60 mg/l yeast extract), menthone (in 40 mg/l yeast extract and 2 mg/l salicylic acid), menthol (in 6 mg/l salicylic acid) and α-pinene (in 4 mg/l salicylic acid) in the M. pulegium cell culture. The Pulegone was fond more in natural plants than cell culture mass. The most important secondary metabolites were increased by cell culture containing of salicylic acid and yeast extract elicitors in M. pulegume.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: There has been increasing interest dedicated to the phenolic compounds with a view to their antioxidant and healthy properties. Recent studies have focused on plants from the Lamiaceae family with special interest in phenolic compounds antioxidant potential. OBJECTIVE: The metabolite profile of methanolic extracts from two Lamiacea medicinal plants was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mentha pulegium and Origanum majorana methanolic extracts were analysed using reversed-phase ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-UHPLC) coupled to electrospray ionisation quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-QTOF-MS) detection in the negative ion mode. RESULTS: A total of 85 metabolites were characterised from different families, such as organic acids and derivatives, amino acids and derivatives, nucleosides, phenolic compounds as well as other polar metabolites, by using the MS and MS/MS information provided by the QTOF-MS. However, the total phenols and flavonoids were also quantified spectrophotometrically and they registered higher amounts in Mentha pulegium than in Origanum majorana extract. Gallocatechin was the major compound in M. pulegium extract whereas quercetin dimethyl ether, jaceidin and dihydrokaempferide were the major ones in O. majorana extract. CONCLUSION: The distribution of phenolic compounds in the methanolic extract showed a variation among studied plants. Mentha pulegium can be considered as a source of gallocatechin.
