BACKGROUND: Sierra Leone has a very high maternal mortality rate, and this burden falls heavily on adolescents, a particularly vulnerable group; this is usually driven by poverty, lack of education and employment opportunities. In 2017, a local grassroots organisation, Lifeline Nehemiah Projects, developed a community-based mentoring intervention '2YoungLives' (2YLs) for adolescent girls in Eastern Freetown. We aim to formally assess the feasibility and implementation of the 2YL mentorship scheme in new communities in Sierra Leone. METHODS: A hybrid type 2 pilot cluster randomised controlled trial of the 2YL mentoring scheme in urban and rural communities living around twelve peripheral health units (PHU) across five districts in Sierra Leone. Clusters will be matched into pairs and randomisation will be determined by computer-generated random numbers via a secure web-based system hosted by MedSciNet. All under-eighteen adolescents identified as pregnant in the community and/or the PHU are included. Feasibility (recruitment, retention, and attrition rates; data collection and completeness; sample calculation) and primary clinical outcome data (composite of maternal deaths, stillbirths, neonatal deaths) will be collected. A mixed-methods process evaluation will explore implementation outcomes, mechanisms of change, contextual factors, experiences of care, and health and wellbeing. A concurrent cost-consequence analysis will be undertaken. Main trial analysis will be pragmatic, by intention to treat, and a complementary per protocol analysis will also be included. DISCUSSION: Improving health and wellbeing for adolescent girls (including sexual and reproductive health) remains a top priority in Sierra Leone indicated by several government policies targeted to this group, in which maternal and infant mortality are still persistently high. Supporting these girls and facilitating their wellbeing is imperative, along with sensitisation of communities, strengthening of youth friendly services and collaboration with stakeholders at all levels (government, regional, community, family). We believe 2YL supports the global holistic agenda to integrate and implement interventions across health, education, and social systems in order to protect, nurture, and support the health and development potential of every adolescent girl, and thus become a model of good practice for adolescent pregnancy, to be adopted more widely in Sierra Leone and elsewhere. BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funds a quality improvement (QI) health promotion telewellness program for adults with physical disabilities. OBJECTIVE: The nutrition component of the parent program, Mindfulness, Exercise, and Nutrition to Optimize Resilience (MENTOR) program, from 2020 to 2021, was evaluated to assess changes in nutrition knowledge of people with physical disabilities. METHODS: This was a quasi-experimental program evaluation by pre-post survey of participating adults with physical disabilities. Participants attended weekly nutrition classes for eight weeks with optional one-on-one counseling with a Registered Dietitian. Participants completed pre-post General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire Revised (GNKQ-R) that were analyzed using paired t-tests. Participants were grouped into quartiles by pre-program GNKQ-R scores for additional comparisons. Program attendance and post-program feedback were also evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 286 participants completed the MENTOR program, and 31% (n = 89) completed pre-post questionnaires for data analysis. Mean pre-program GNKQ-R scores were 58.4 ± 15.1 and post scores were 64.4 ± 11.3, which demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in nutrition knowledge (p < .001). Ancillary analysis revealed that participants with the lowest quartile of pre-program nutrition knowledge had the greatest improvements in their post-GNKQ-R scores (Mean change 16.4 ± 13.9). Questionnaire data revealed participants' subjective knowledge changes and their feedback on the nutrition component of the program. CONCLUSIONS: The eight-week MENTOR program effectively improved nutrition knowledge among people with physical disabilities. This demonstrates the impact the program can have on individual knowledge levels. Additionally, these results support the implementation of the program to the broader population of people with disabilities.

Introduction: This study evaluated the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD) Mindfulness, Exercise, and Nutrition To Optimize Resilience (MENTOR) program for people with physical disabilities. Methods: This retrospective evaluation of MENTOR 2.0, an 8-week online group health promotion program, was based on improvements from its first implementation (MENTOR 1.0). Baseline and postassessments included the Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTEQ), NCHPAD Wellness Assessment (NWA), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale. Estimates and corresponding 95% CIs from linear mixed models were provided to compare baseline and postassessment scores and effect sizes using Cohen d. Results: Among 116 participants (mean age, 53 y; 63% female), postassessment scores increased significantly in the overall NWA and in all 15 NWA domains (effect size, 0.30-0.69). The overall NWA score was 7.59 (95% CI, 5.63-9.56) units higher at postassessment compared with baseline. Scores for GLTEQ health contribution increased significantly among participants with low baseline scores (31.37 [95% CI, 12.97-49.77]) (effect size, 0.50). Mindfulness and resilience scores both showed improvement (0.16 [95% CI, 0.01-0.31]; effect size, 0.15) and (0.72 [95% CI, -0.25 to 1.68]; effect size 0.09), respectively, but only the change in mindfulness was significant. Conclusion: MENTOR 2.0 advanced the evaluation of this online telewellness program for people with physical disabilities by demonstrating consistent results with MENTOR 1.0. We reported improvements in GLTEQ, especially among those with lower baseline scores; in multiple areas of wellness, including physical, mental, and emotional/spiritual health; and in mindfulness and resilience, although the improvements in these 2 constructs were small.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based practice (EBP) uses current and best evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values to drive clinical decisions. Organizations struggle with building and sustaining an EBP-focused culture. OBJECTIVES: This article shares the development and implementation of SEEK™ (Spirit of Inquiry, Expanding EBP Knowledge), an educational initiative on how to apply EBP processes at a Magnet®- and National Cancer Institute- designated comprehensive cancer center. METHODS: Participants learned principles of the EBP process using didactic sessions, small group exercises, and article critiques. With mentor guidance, participants searched for and appraised evidence, proposed interventions, designed an implementation plan, and developed metrics to measure results. FINDINGS: To date, 56 SEEK projects are in various stages of development and implementation. Based on postprogram survey results, SEEK participants and mentors demonstrated increased EBP knowledge.

INTRODUCTION: There is growing interest in health, developmental and survival outcomes of children who are born HIV-free to women living with HIV (children born HIV-free). To date, the research agenda has been largely determined by researchers, funders and policy makers, with limited involvement of parents, who are key stakeholders. Researchers at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in partnership with community-based organisation 4M Network of Mentor Mothers conducted two workshops with parents in March 2022 to establish research priorities for children born HIV-free, and key considerations for methodological approaches both to research and engagement with the affected communities. DISCUSSION: When exploring research on children born HIV-free, we consider the following: what aspects of current research are aligned with women and parents' priorities, what is missing and what approaches would be preferred. A holistic approach to research on children born HIV-free should be prioritised, focussing on a breadth of outcomes and how they intersect. Secondary use of existing data sources should be maximised to facilitate this, with a view of monitoring the long-term effects of fetal antiretroviral drug exposure alongside other key health and developmental outcomes. Involving and engaging with parents, and children where possible, must be at the heart of research design to maximise relevance and impact of findings for the affected communities. Potential barriers to engaging with individuals who were children born HIV-free include parental disclosure and individuals not identifying as a child born HIV-free to a mother living with HIV. Stigma-free language must be incorporated into the vocabulary of researchers and other stakeholders, avoiding reference to exposure; we propose the term "children born HIV-free." CONCLUSIONS: Mothers and parents living with HIV should be involved in research about their children born HIV-free and are key in identifying research priorities so that findings may translate into an impact on their children's health and wellbeing. Meaningful involvement of women living with HIV through trusted community partners is an effective mechanism by which to elicit views on research about their children.

RESUMO

Translational research (TR) is the movement of fundamental scientific discoveries into healthcare settings and population health policy, and parallels the goals of DOHaD research. Unfortunately, there is little guidance on how to become a translational researcher. To understand the opinions of DOHaD trainees towards TR, we conducted a workshop at the DOHaD World Congress 2022. We found that trainees were enthusiastic for their work to have translational impact, and that they feel that holistic, multidisciplinary solutions may lead to more generalisable research. However, there lacks support for TR career pathways, which may stall the execution of the long-term vision of the DOHaD agenda. We put forward recommendations for trainees to clarify their purpose in pursuing TR and for seeking relevant people and patronages to support their training paths. For mentors, training institutions, and scientific societies, we recommend developing TR-specific programmes, and implementing training opportunities, networking events, and funding to support these endeavours.

BACKGROUND: There is an urgent global call for health systems to strengthen access to quality sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health, particularly for the most vulnerable. Professional midwives with enabling environments are identified as an important solution. However, a multitude of barriers prevent midwives from fully realizing their potential. Effective interventions to address known barriers and enable midwives and quality sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health are less well known. This review intends to evaluate the literature on (1) introducing midwives in low- and middle-income countries, and (2) on mentoring as a facilitator to enable midwives and those in midwifery roles to improve sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health service quality within health systems. METHODS: An integrative systematic literature review was conducted, guided by the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome framework. Articles were reviewed for quality and relevance using the Gough weight-of-evidence framework and themes were identified. A master table categorized articles by Gough score, methodology, country of focus, topic areas, themes, classification of midwives, and mentorship model. The World Health Organization health systems building block framework was applied for data extraction and analysis. RESULTS: Fifty-three articles were included: 13 were rated as high, 36 as medium, and four as low according to the Gough criteria. Studies that focused on midwives primarily highlighted human resources, governance, and service delivery while those focused on mentoring were more likely to highlight quality services, lifesaving commodities, and health information systems. Midwives whose pre-service education met global standards were found to have more efficacy. The most effective mentoring packages were comprehensive, integrated into existing systems, and involved managers. CONCLUSIONS: Effectively changing sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health systems is complex. Globally standard midwives and a comprehensive mentoring package show effectiveness in improving service quality and utilization. African American, American Indian and Alaska Native, Hispanic (or Latinx), Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islander groups are underrepresented in the biomedical workforce, which is one of the barriers to addressing cancer disparities among minority populations. The creation of a more inclusive biomedical workforce dedicated to reducing the burden of cancer health disparities requires structured, mentored research and cancer-related research exposure during the earlier stages of training. The Summer Cancer Research Institute (SCRI) is a multicomponent 8-week intensive summer program funded under the Partnership between a Minority Serving Institute and a National Institutes of Health-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. In this survey study, we found that students who participated in the SCRI Program reported greater knowledge and interest in pursuing careers in cancer-related fields than their counterparts who did not participate in SCRI. Successes, challenges, and solutions in providing training in cancer and cancer health disparities research to improve diversity in the biomedical fields were also discussed.

Background: Career development is essential for all academic stages, but particularly critical for the growth and retention of early career scientists. In addition to scientific technical training, professional skill development is crucial for the upward transition from postdoctoral trainee to early faculty member and beyond. Building leadership skills, specifically, is an important component of professional development, and the evaluation and reporting of professional development are important to improve and enhance the impact of programs. Methods: The purpose of this article is to share the program evaluation performed on leadership development activities, including executive coaching and mindful leadership training provided to a small group of early career scientists who participated in the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Mayo Clinic Specialized Center of Research Excellence (SCORE) in Sex Differences Career Enhancement Core and Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) K12 programs during 2020-2022. Results: Eighty-seven percent of participants rated their satisfaction with the executive coaching program as "Very Satisfied" or "Satisfied," and 75% of participants were "Very Satisfied" or "Satisfied" with the mindful leadership training program. The findings of this program evaluation highlight the value of communication skills for navigating precarious situations, building self-efficacy and intentionality in making and holding boundaries for an individual's time and energy. Further, the individualized small group format of the activities allowed for deeper introspection and peer to peer connection. Conclusion: The identification of common themes within the Mayo Clinic program provides guidance to other academic environments on areas where they can support their early career scientists.

Choosing a mentor requires a certain level of introspection for both the mentor and the mentee. The dynamics of mentorship may change depending on the academic status of the mentee. Regardless, mentors should help their trainees grow both academically and professionally. The success of an individual in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) depends on more than intellectual capacity; a holistic view encompassing all factors that contribute to scientific achievement is all-important. Specifically, one new method scientists can adopt is quotients, which are scales and techniques that can be used to measure aptitude in a specific area. In this paper, we focus on these factors and how to grow one's adversity quotient (AQ), social quotient (SQ), and personal growth initiative scale (PGIS). We also look at how mentors can better understand the biases of their trainees. In addressing this, mentors can help trainees become more visible and encourage other trainees to become allies through reducing biases.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid depression and/or anxiety symptoms occur in 25% of patients attending cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs and are associated with poorer prognosis. There is a need to evaluate psychological interventions, including meditation, that have potential to improve psychological health in CR programs. AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility and acceptability of integrating a meditation intervention into an existing Australian CR program for the reduction of depression and anxiety symptoms. METHODS: This was a mixed-methods feasibility randomized controlled trial. Thirty-one patients with CVD and, at a minimum, mild depression and/or anxiety symptoms were randomized to meditation and standard CR or to standard CR alone. A 16-minute guided group meditation was delivered face-to-face once a week for 6 weeks, with daily self-guided meditation practice between sessions. Feasibility outcomes included screening, recruitment, and retention. Semistructured interviews of patients' (n = 10) and health professionals' (n = 18) perspectives of intervention participation and delivery were undertaken to assess acceptability. Between-group differences in depression, anxiety, stress, self-efficacy for mindfulness, and health status at 6 and 12 weeks were also assessed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Meditation was considered feasible, with 83% (12/15) of the intervention group completing an average of 3.13 (SD, 2.56) out of 6 group meditation sessions and 5.28 (SD, 8.50) self-guided sessions. Meditation was considered acceptable by patients, clinicians, and health managers. Between-group differences in the number of CR sessions completed favored the intervention group in per-protocol analyses (intervention group vs control group, 12 vs 9 sessions; P = .014), which suggests that meditation may be useful to improve patients' adherence to exercise-based CR program.

The purpose of this scoping review is to determine trends in racial and ethnic representation, identify barriers and facilitators to greater diversity, and assess strategies and interventions to advance diversity among those in the pediatric research workforce in the U.S. We conducted a scoping review of PubMed supplemented with the authors' personal library of papers published from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2021. To be eligible, papers had to provide original data, be published in English, report information from a U.S. healthcare institution, and report on outcomes of interest relevant to the child health field. The diversity of faculty has modestly increased over the past decade but reflects a worsening representation compared to overall population trends. This slow increase reflects a loss of diverse faculty and has been referred to as a "leaky pipeline." Strategies to plug the "leaky pipeline" include greater investments in pipeline programs, implementation of holistic review and implicit bias training, development of mentoring and faculty programs targeted to diverse faculty and trainees, alleviation of burdensome administrative tasks, and creation of more inclusive institutional environments. Modest improvements in the racial and ethnic diversity of the pediatric research workforce were identified. However, this reflects worsening overall representation given changing U.S. population demographics. IMPACT: Racial and ethnic diversity in the pediatric research workforce has shown modest increases but worsening overall representation. This review identified barriers and facilitators at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and institutional levels that impact BIPOC trainees and faculty career advancement. Strategies to improve the pathway for BIPOC individuals include greater investments in pipeline and educational programs, implementation of holistic review admissions and bias training, institution of mentoring and sponsorship, alleviation of burdensome administrative responsibilities, and creation of inclusive institutional climates. Future studies should rigorously test the effects of interventions and strategies designed to improve diversity in the pediatric research workforce.

ABSTRACT: The African Regional Collaborative for nurses and midwives funded quality improvement projects in five countries to enhance clinical mentorship programs supporting HIV service delivery for women, infants, and children. Each country team implemented specific interventions focused on the application of nurse-initiated and managed antiretroviral therapy guidelines and competencies. A site-level tool, the nursing practice framework, measured structural maturation in clinical mentorship programs across five stages at eight facilities. Clinical competencies that aligned with the framework were evaluated through a provider-level knowledge assessment to identify on-going needs for mentees before and after the implementation period. Key trends observed in the assessment include positive program progression for all facilities; competencies were higher for pregnant and breastfeeding women and lower for HIV-exposed infants; there was an increase in posttest participation for all facilities. The nursing practice framework provides a rapid assessment of structural changes and exploration of context to identify quality improvement needs.

INTRODUCTION: Mentoring programs are one mechanism used to increase diversity and participation of historically underrepresented groups in academic medicine. However, more knowledge is needed about the mentoring experiences and how culturally relevant concepts and perspectives may influence diverse students, trainees, and faculty success. This case study utilized the Culturally Engaging Campus Environments (CECE) model which examines the experiences of students in higher education. We used this model to examine the mentoring experiences of Black and Latine faculty and offer practical implications for the medical education continuum. METHODS: Our research approach is best understood through qualitative inquiry stemming from a single-case study which allowed for in-depth understanding of the contexts informing the phenomenon. Phenomenology is well positioned to contribute to understanding science and health professions. Selection criteria included individuals who self-identified as Black or Latine; inclusive of all faculty ranks and tracks. This analysis focuses on 8 semi-structured interviews, averaging 3 h in length. RESULTS: Findings centered on the area of cultural relevance, and participant narratives revealed the connection of mentoring with cultural familiarity, culturally relevant knowledge, cultural service and engagement, and cultural validation. CONCLUSION: The use of cultural relevance indicators can inform the creation and evolution of mentoring programs towards holistic support of historically underrepresented trainees and faculty. Implications also focus on the development of mentors and championing the incorporation of cultural humility in the mentoring process. The implications in praxis offers the possibility for a new framework for culturally relevant mentoring (CRM). Through this framework we aim to enhance and facilitate inclusive learning environments and career development.

PROBLEM: Limited opportunity exists for new graduates in Australia to be employed in continuity of care midwifery models. AIM: To explore the perspectives of midwifery mentors supporting new graduate midwives employed in continuity of care models. METHODS: An interpretive, qualitative study was conducted. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups with senior midwifery staff who mentored new graduate midwives during their transition to practice within a continuity of care model were undertaken. Digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim, data were thematically analysed. Data collection ceased once theoretical saturation had been achieved. NVIVO software was used to assist with coding and data management. FINDINGS: Twelve mentors participated. Mentors provided valuable feedback to optimise the supportive mechanisms to enable the success of the rotation of new graduate midwives in continuity of care models during their transition to practice period. Three key themes were constructed, including: Getting it right in the first place; Nurturing our new midwives; and The cultural void. DISCUSSION: Consistent with the wider literature, effective implementation, sound support structures and wider acceptance of new graduate midwives transitioning to practice within continuity of care models is crucial to its success and sustainability. CONCLUSION: Mentors are responsible to nurture, respect and guide new midwives through this crucial period, as they transition from midwifery student to registered midwife. Mentors believe in the transition of new graduate midwives in continuity of care models.

Objective/Aim: To examine the experiences of culturally safe mentoring programmes described by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses and midwives in Australia.Design: A systematic scoping review.Data Sources: The following databases were accessed: CINAHL Plus with Full Text (EBSCO), EMCARE (Ovid), MEDLINE (Ovid), INFORMIT (Health Collection/Indigenous Collection) and SCOPUS. Support relating to key words and appropriate databases was provided by a university librarian.Review Methods: Search terms across databases were sourced from 1997-2021, identifying a total of 161 papers. Title/abstract searches were screened against the inclusion/exclusion criteria, resulting in 18 papers reaching full-text review. Of the 18 full-text papers reviewed, six were eligible for inclusion in the final review.Results/Findings: Culturally safe mentorship was a positive experience for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses and midwives. Thematic discussion identified three key themes: Mentorship as a way forward, Culture in mentorship, and Cultural safety's role in mentorship.Discussion: Culturally safe mentoring has been a key recommendation in the nursing literature for over 20 years. There is limited knowledge on what constitutes an effective programme as mentoring programmes have not been empirically evaluated or reviewed.Conclusion: This review provides evidence that Cultural Safety and the exploration of culture impact culturally safe mentoring and can impact workforce cultural capability.Impact Statement: This review indicates that culturally safe mentoring has been a key recommendation in nursing literature for over 20 years. This scoping review aims to explore and interpret Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses' and midwives' perspectives of culturally safe mentoring programmes in Australia. This review concludes that mentoring programmes require content in Cultural Safety and that programmes need to be empirically evaluated.

RESUMO

My early exposure to mental illness in our community, the plight of mentally ill people and their families drove me to seek postgraduate training in psychiatry in India. I realized early on that only research could make an impact on the scale that was needed. My contacts with thoughtful scientists and mentors helped me understand that by training enthusiastic individuals - especially women, multi-focussed research could make a substantial impact and have a multiplier effect. I thus devoted my life not only to research, but research-based training. I outline below our training programs and their outcomes.

Mentorship is an important contributor to strengthening research capacity among health researchers. Formal mentorship programmes, targeting women mentees can help mitigate some of the gendered power dynamics and can also help early career researchers learn from others' experiences of navigating these challenges. In 2020, the UNDP/UNFPA/UNICEF/WHO/World Bank Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction at the World Health Organization launched a mentorship programme geared towards early career women researchers. This paper describes the process of designing and implementing a mentorship programme for early career women sexual and reproductive health and rights researchers from low- and middle-income countries including valuable lessons learned vis-à-vis existing evidence. Some of these findings have been incorporated into iterations of the programme launched in 2022. Critical points include: ensuring considerations for language and geographical distribution; allowing mentees to participate in the matching process; providing training and opportunities to network and learn from other participants; offering the support and structure for developing these relationships. Providing women researchers with the tools - through mentorship - to navigate the unique challenges they face in their career journeys, can have a lasting impact on research capacity. Countries and institutions committed to strengthening research capacity need to focus on the holistic growth and motivation of individuals in a way that ensures gender equality.

The pandemic era has wrought disruptive changes across all aspects of academic medicine, transforming clinical care systems, research enterprises, and educational practices. Among these sweeping changes, some of the most significant for Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (OHNS) relate to innovative use of virtual communication. The virtual landscape has not only redefined the delivery of patient care but also expanded educational interactions across the career continuum. As the architecture of relationships has been reimagined, the traditional Halstedian teaching paradigm has evolved, now integrating in-person, virtual, and hybrid learning. Once formidable barriers to distance learning have diminished, giving way to social networks that support mentorship, coaching, and sponsorship. Creative use of technology supports collaboration, feedback, spaced learning, scaffolding, and interleaving. These advances have immediate significance for OHNS, a highly collaborative specialty that leads in technological innovation and aspires to improve diversity. Whereas traditional efforts to grow the ranks of underrepresented in medicine (URiM) individuals in OHNS yielded only incremental progress, the virtual landscape is unveiling new strategies for reengineering narrow or leaky pipelines. Strategies that can help attract URiM applicants include inclusive departmental web presence, interactive online clinical experiences, virtual interviews, and remote research opportunities. As students, surgeons, and scientists collectively embrace technology, accelerated progress toward diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) becomes possible. Maximizing these opportunities requires aligning national and institutional imperatives for diversity with departmental priorities and mission. Finally, intentional outreach and holistic assessment support growth of structured virtual communities that foster equitable access for those who need it most.

In the United States, preparing researchers and practitioners for careers in cancer requires multiple components for success. In this reflection article, we discuss our approach to designing a comprehensive research training program in cancer disparities. We focused on elements that provide students and early career scientists a deep understanding of disparities through first-hand experiences and skills training necessary to build a research career in the area. Our Educational Program sits within the framework of an NCI P20 program, "UHAND (University of Houston/MD Anderson Cancer Center)", jointly established by an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center and a minority-serving university as a collaborative partnership devoted to the elimination of cancer inequities among disproportionately affected racial and ethnic groups (UHAND Program to Reduce Cancer Disparities; NCI P20CA221696/ P20CA221697). The Education Program was designed to build on and enhance skills that are critical to pursuing a career in cancer disparities research at the undergraduate, doctoral, and post-doctoral levels-such as scientific communication, career planning and development, professional and community-based collaboration, and resilience in addition to solid scientific training. As such, our program integrates (1) opportunities for learning through service to community organizations providing resources to populations with documented cancer disparities, (2) a tailored curriculum of learning activities with program leadership and mentored research with scientists focused on cancer disparities and cancer prevention, (3) professional development training critical to career success in disparities research, and (4) support to address unique challenges faced by trainees from backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in research.
