BACKGROUND: The Worldwide Voyage (WWV) was a 3-year (2014-2017) open-ocean voyage to circumnavigate the world using Indigenous knowledge and navigational skills aboard Hokule'a, a traditionally designed Native Hawaiian (NH) voyaging canoe (wa'a kaulua). Each WWV segment included experienced crew and leadership who were recognized by their voyaging peers as highly experienced in Polynesian oceanic voyaging. This study explored the perceptions and insights of WWV-experienced ocean voyagers on the interconnection between human health and oceanic voyaging. METHODOLOGY: A constructivist approach with a storytelling-based moderator guide was used to conduct focus groups and informant interviews of experienced crew and voyaging leadership. Participants were interviewed and recorded transcripts were analyzed using content analysis. Triangulation of analysis included secondary thematic review by two independent NH cultural practitioners and participant member checking. Purposive sampling was used to enroll 34 of 66 eligible highly experienced voyagers (leadership n = 6; crew n = 28) in 5 focus groups and 4 informant interviews. RESULTS: Six themes emerged: 1) Indigenous context (spiritual and natural environment); 2) Importance of relationships and community; 3) Description of life on the canoe; 4) Holistic health; 5) Mindfulness, stress reduction and emotional health; and 6) Opportunities for intervention. Themes 1-5 were inductive and intricately interrelated, and theme 6 was deductive in that it directly resulted from a moderator guide question. Theme 6 offers strategies to improve the impact of voyaging and health well beyond the physical voyage with recommendations for improved transition back to land and developing a wa'a community context, which reflects a traditional voyaging experience. CONCLUSIONS: Polynesian oceanic voyaging is strongly perceived as a positive and transformative holistic-health-promoting experience. SIGNIFICANCE: Recommendations to promote generalizable health benefits of a voyaging lifestyle offers a promising and culturally grounded approach warranting future studies to understand mechanism and potential impact for improving health inequities.

BACKGROUND: Seafarers, confronted with unique health challenges, occasionally necessitate medical repatriation. This study examines the trends in medical repatriation cases among Filipino seafarers employed by OSM Maritime shipping company over a 10-year period from 2013 to 2022. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of OSM Maritime seafarers were reviewed, obtaining causes for and dates of medical repatriation. International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) was utilised to classify repatriation cases. Proportion of repatriation cases were calculated and their annual trends were analysed. RESULTS: Our findings reveal that the majority of repatriation cases are attributed to injury/trauma (19.91%), musculoskeletal (18.40%), gastrointestinal (16.56%), cardiovascular (8.77%), infectious (6.82%), and genitourinary conditions (5.30%). Significantly, the study identifies a declining trend in the proportion of cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary conditions in annual repatriation cases, particularly in ischaemic heart conditions, cholelithiasis, cholecystitis, and urinary calculus. CONCLUSIONS: These results emphasize the critical need for multisectoral collaboration to enhance seafarers' health and well-being. Prioritizing comprehensive care programmes, ensuring safe working conditions, and exploring holistic healthcare initiatives are essential steps to enhance seafarers' occupational health.

Crude oil cargo operation poses significant oil spill risk although utmost care is exercised by ship and shore crew. This paper focuses on quantitative risk analysis for oil spill incidents in crude oil tanker ships to enhance safety at the operational level and prevent potential pollution. To achieve this purpose, the Bayesian network (BN) is used under the improved Z-numbers theory. While BN provides a powerful tool based on cause and effect network between the variables, the improved Z-numbers are capable of handling uncertainty and improving the reliability of qualitative expert judgments. The findings show that the occurrence probability of oil spill risk in crude oil tanker ships is found 2.90E-02 during the cargo loading operation. The findings of the research are expected to contribute ship crew, safety inspectors, ship owners, HSEQ managers, and terminal managers in risk management decision-making, improving operational safety, taking control actions, and minimizing oil spills.

INTRODUCTION: The Chinese Naval ship Peace Ark provided humanitarian medical services to people in eight low-income countries in Africa and Asia during the 2017 "Harmonious Mission'. The expedition lasted 155 days. Our study aimed to analyse the details of the medical services provided including outpatient care, medical patrol, operations, examinations and medications. METHOD: The patient demographic data and medical information were extracted from electronic medical records. The diagnoses and procedures aboard were coded by the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). The sociodemographic data of the medical staff aboard were collected via questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and statistical software (SAS, V.9.4) were used to analyse the data. RESULTS: In total, 115 Chinese military medical personnel participated in the mission, completing a total of 50 758 outpatient visits, 10 232 medical patrols and 252 operations. The five most frequently used outpatient departments were ophthalmology, general surgery, general internal medicine, orthopaedics and traditional Chinese medicine. The five most common operations were lipoma excision, cataract extraction, skin tissue removal (such as warts and cysts), pterygium transposition and herniorrhaphy. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed the medical services in demand during the 'Harmonious Mission-2017'. It is essential to report their experiences so that future ventures can provide medical services more effectively.

Today, the impact of transportation on sustainable development is undeniable. Maritime transport, as one of the important pillars of this industry and due to its advantages such as low cost and large volume of freight, plays a key role in the development of foreign trade. This study uses TOPSIS and DEMATLE methods to evaluate the factors affecting the unloading and loading of goods on the port's environment. The results of TOPSIS method on the main criteria showed that the atmospheric factors' criterion had the highest weight and the port criterion (includes activities that occur in the port) had the lowest weight. In the sub-criteria section, the suitable visibility of the crane operator had the highest rank and the sub-criterion of storage capacity and its (storage) area obtained the lowest rank. Also, the results of DEMATEL method on the cause-and-effect relationship of sub-criteria of unloading and loading of goods showed that coastal transport equipment, unloading and loading equipment, and safety required for unloading goods are influenced higher than other sub-criteria and also the impact of safety required for unloading goods, proper visibility of the crane operator, and the ability of unloading equipment is greater than other sub-criteria. The results of cause-and-effect relationship for sub-criteria of the port environment showed that the impact of sewage, sanitary effluents from the port and ships, and hazardous waste is higher than other sub-criteria and also the impact of petroleum hydrocarbons, sediments, and toxic substances is higher than other sub-criteria.

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivorship is associated with co-morbidities including anxiety, depression and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Rehabilitative care post-treatment is vital for survivors' psychological and physical well-being. The present study aimed to investigate breast cancer survivors' attitudes towards their health post-treatment; their awareness of co-morbidities associated with treatment; and their awareness of support systems available. METHODS: A qualitative research approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews with breast cancer survivors from the UK and Ireland. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Eight breast cancer survivors were recruited through purposive sampling. RESULTS: Two themes emerged from the data: (1) health and rehabilitation post-treatment, which included mental and physical health and a desire to control one's own health in survivorship as well as a discussion around co-morbidities, and (2) access to support services in survivorship, which highlighted both positive and negative experiences of accessing support, as well as reasons for not accessing support in survivorship. CONCLUSIONS: Access to rehabilitation support, including diet, exercise and stress management, is key to survivorship. Rehabilitation and support services need to be more readily available for survivors to aid them in this journey and to educate them on the increased risk of conditions such as CVD with cancer treatment. Utilising current cardiac rehabilitation models could be a solution to provide a holistic cancer rehabilitation, thus providing the lifelong support that cancer survivors both want and need.

Marine pollution caused by the untreated and substandard discharge of ship domestic sewage has received widespread attention. A novel integrated process for struvite recovery and nutrient removal from ship domestic sewage (SRNR-SDS) based on seawater magnesium source was developed in this study. Removal efficiencies of the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) for the activated sludge unit in SRNR-SDS process were approximately 67.61% and 41.35%, respectively, under the salinity of 7.85 g/L. The coupling-induced struvite crystallization unit significantly improved the removal efficiency of TN and TP, and the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction demonstrated that magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) crystals were successfully formed on the surface of zeolite. The SRNR-SDS process had an ideal performance for pollutant removal and MAP recovery under the optimal hydraulic retention time of 20 h. The effluent concentrations of COD, NH4+-N, TN and TP in SRNR-SDS process were approximately 34.73 mg/L, 4.31 mg/L, 10.07 mg/L and 0.23 mg/L, respectively, which meet the Chinese and international ship sewage discharge standards. SRNR-SDS process has obvious environmental, social and economic benefits, which could save 6.20%∼57.14% of the operation cost of ship domestic sewage treatment via MAP recovery. The results could provide theoretical and technical support for the development and application of ship sewage treatment process with the functions of pollutant removal and resource recovery.

BACKGROUND: Seafarers' mental health is seriously affected by COVID-19. The pandemic could act as a catalyst for change with respect to seafarers' mental health protection and promotion. OBJECTIVE: The study explores the main factors contributing to the mental health and wellbeing of seafarers. Moreover, elements to help seafarers lessen the impact of the pandemic on their work and life onboard are analyzed, and their role in developing a positive psychosocial environment and promoting a healthy workplace onboard are discussed. METHODS: The study involved the use of an ad hoc questionnaire and the adoption of both quantitative and qualitative methods. The sample included one hundred and five active seafarers. RESULTS: Ninety-six percent of the sample stated that mental health is a very or extremely important part of their general health. Seafarers perceive that their mental health has been seriously impacted by COVID-19. Major factors contributing to seafarers' mental health and wellbeing reveal three groups of factors: rest and spare time-related factors, communication/relationship with the external world, and interaction and social life on board factors. CONCLUSIONS: Strategies suggested by seafarers for coping with "inevitable" psychological stress produced by COVID-19 and promoting their wellbeing include managerial, emotional, facilities-related (including communication infrastructure), physical, and social elements to promote wellbeing. Economic, intellectual, and spiritual elements also have to be taken into consideration and require further investigation. Building on seafarers' insights and experiences, a healthy environment onboard should cultivate holistically the four main spheres of a healthy workplace (physical work environment, psychosocial work environment, personal health resources, and enterprise community involvement) and the five features of a healthy psychosocial environment (social, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual) under all circumstances, whether exceptional or ordinary.

In coastal aquifers, two opposite but complementary processes occur: Seawater intrusion (SWI), which may salinize heavily exploited aquifers, and Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) which transports oligo-elements to the sea. Aquifers are expected to be chemically reactive, both because they provide abundant surfaces to catalyze reactions and the mixing of very different Fresh Water (FW) and Sea Water (SW) promote numerous reactions. Characterizing and quantifying these reactions is essential to assess the quality and composition of both aquifer water, and SGD. Indeed, sampling SGD is difficult, so its composition is usually uncertain. We propose a reactive end-member mixing analysis (rEMMA) methodology based on principal component analysis (PCA) to (i) identify the sources of water and possible reactions occurring in the aquifer and (ii) quantify mixing ratios and the extent of chemical reactions. We applied rEMMA to the Argentona coastal aquifer located North of Barcelona that contains fluvial sediments of granitic origin and overlies weathered granite. The identification of end members (FW and SW) and the spatial distribution of their mixing ratios illustrate the application procedure. The extent of reactions and their spatial distribution allow us to distinguish reactions that occur as a result of mixing from those caused by sediment disequilibrium, which are relevant to recirculated saltwater SGD. The most important reaction is cation exchange, especially between Ca and Na, which promotes other reactions such as Gypsum and Fluorite precipitation. Iron and Manganese are mobilized in the SW portion but oxidized and precipitated in the mixing zone, so that Fe (up to 15 µEq/L) and Mn (up to 10 µEq/L) discharge is restricted to SW SGD. Nitrate is reduced in the mixing zone. The actual reaction amounts are site-specific, but the processes are not, which leads us to conjecture the importance of these reactions to understand the SGD discharge elsewhere.

The ongoing reduction in extent and thickness of sea ice in the Arctic might result in an increase of oil spill risk due to the expansion of shipping activity and oil exploration shift towards higher latitudes. This work assessed the response of two oil-in-ice surface drift models implemented in an open-source Lagrangian framework. By considering two numerical modeling experiments, our main finding indicates that the drift models provide fairly similar outputs when forced by the same input. It was also found that using higher resolution ice-ocean model does not imply better results. We highlight the role of sea ice in the spread, direction and distance traveled by the oil. The skill metric seems to be sensitive to the drift location, and drift model re-initialization is required to avoid forecast deterioration and ensure the accurate tracking of oil slicks in real operations.

Legionella species are generally found in nature and in water resources, and they are gram negative bacilli that can cause pneumonia by being transmitted from water systems to humans via aerosol or aspiration. Legionnaires' disease caused by this agent continues to be a public health problem in cruise ships. In this study, it was aimed to determine the prevalence of the colonization of Legionella species by culture method and to determine the molecular characterization of the isolated Legionella in water samples taken from the water systems of the ships docking in Mersin International Port. A total of 158 cold water samples were taken from 18 ferry and/or cargo ships docking in Mersin International Port between December 2014 and June 2015. Fifty-four of the samples were obtained from tanks, 68 from taps and 36 from shower heads. All samples were centrifuged and inoculated from the pellet onto "Buffered Coal Yeast Extract" (BCYE) (Oxoid, CM0655, UK) agar medium supplemented with iron pyrophosphate, L-cysteine and α-ketoglutarate (Oxoid, SR0110, UK). The culture plates were incubated for 10-15 days in microaerophilic environment in a desiccator at 37°C. The suspicious colonies grown in cultures were serogrouped by latex agglutination test (Oxoid, DR0800M, UK) and fluorescent antibody method (m-Tech Monoclonal Technologies, Inc., USA). For the molecular analysis of Legionella species grown in culture, DNA isolation was made from Legionella colonies and then polymerase chain reaction amplification was performed using specific primer sequences targeting the rpoB gene region of the Legionella genome. Direct DNA sequencing of rpoB gene products was performed in the "ABI PRISM 3130XL Genetic Analyzer" (Applied Biosystems, USA). The DNA sequences were typed by BLAST analysis and the determined types, and NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) reference Legionella sequences were phylogenetically compared with the Neighbor-Joining comparison method by using the Mega 7 program. Legionella spp. was isolated in 18 (11.4%) of 158 samples. Of these, four (7.4%, 4/54) were detected from the tank, 11 (16.2%, 11/68) from the tap and three (8.33%, 3/36) from the shower head. After the latex agglutination test performed from the growing bacterial colonies, five (27.8%) were serogrouped as Legionella spp., four (22.2%) as Legionella pneumophila sg 5, two (11.1%, each) as L.pneumophila sg 1,L.pneumophila sg 8 and Legionella bozemanii and one (5.6%) as L.pneumophila sg 3. Two (11.1%) of the isolates grown in culture could not be serogrouped. Molecular characterization of 12 Legionella isolates could be performed. One of them was serologically serogrouped as L.bozemanii, and it was found to be 99% similar to Legionella rubrilucens when compared with NCBI Legionella sequence data in the BLAST program. One isolate that could not be differentiated by serogrouping was identified as Legionella erytra in the BLAST program after DNA sequence analysis. The remaining 10 isolates (55.6%, n= 18) were confirmed as L.pneumophilia after the comparison with reference NCBI sequences. In this study, it was determined that 11.4% of the water samples collected from the water systems of the ships docking in Mersin International Port were contaminated with Legionella species. The detected Legionella species have an important potential source of infection for the captain, ship workers and passengers travelling on the ships. In this respect, this study reveals the necessity of establishing studies to improve the risk management of Legionella in the water systems of ships.

Marine traffic is the most pervasive underwater anthropogenic noise pollution which can mask acoustic communication in marine mammals and fish, but its effect in marine invertebrates remains unknown. Here, we performed an at sea experiment to study the potential of shipping noise to mask and alter lobster acoustic communication. We used hydrophones to record buzzing sounds and accelerometers to detect lobster carapace vibrations (i.e. the buzzing sounds' sources). We demonstrated that male individuals produced carapace vibrations under various ambient noise conditions, including heavy shipping noise. However, while the associated waterborne buzzing sounds could be recorded under natural ambient noise levels, they were masked by shipping noise. Additionally, lobsters significantly increased their call rates in presence of shipping noise, suggesting a vocal compensation due to the reduction of intraspecific communication. This study reports for the first time the potential acoustic masking of lobster acoustic communication by chronic anthropogenic noise pollution, which could affect ecologically important behaviors.

Countries located on the Black Sea coast perform most of their sea trade through the Istanbul Strait (IS). Approximately 50,000 ships pass through the IS each year, with crude oil tankers making up the majority. Thus, the aim of the study is to determine the acute toxic effect of oil pollution that may occur as a result of crude oil tanker accidents in the IS. By utilising data related to accidents that have occurred in the IS, locations of concentrated tanker accidents, or "hot spots," were determined by Kernel Density Analysis. Subsequently, the distribution of potential leaks following an oil tanker accident, within these hot spots, is modelled with GNOME software. Finally, acute toxicity caused by oil pollution in the marine ecosystem is determined by Aliivibrio fischeri luminescent bacteria toxicity test. In this research, 5 hot spots are identified, where the maximum calculated amount of oil that can reach the coastline after 72 h is 3096 metric tons. Similarly, oil pollution can affect a total coastline of 30-35 km. Furthermore, it was determined that after the oil was diluted in seawater, at a ratio of 1:200,000, the toxic effects decrease (EC50 above 100 mg/L), yet the chronic effects may still continue. The results of this study may serve as a reference for coastal state authorities to develop emergency response plans. Having this valuable knowledge of where high-risk accidents are most concentrated, where the accidents occur intensely, which areas can be affected by the pollution, the duration of the pollution effects, and the distance between the areas, will help determine the number of intervention stations to be installed, their locations, and equipment to be installed to the stations.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the potential association of ocean voyaging with human health and well-being from the perspectives and experiences of the medical officers (MOs) who served during the Worldwide Voyage (WWV). DESIGN: Using a phenomenology framework, focus group and individual interviews were conducted and analysed by three diverse core researchers and then reviewed by three external researchers to enhance triangulation. Analysis used the Framework Method and Atlas-ti software (V.8.4.4) to facilitate coding, identify categories and develop an analytical matrix. The matrix was applied to all data using the constant comparative method to construct major themes and subthemes. Synthesised member checking was performed. SETTING: In 2014-2017, the WWV began in Hawai'i on a traditional voyaging canoe, known as Hokule'a, using a non-instrument navigational method, 'wayfinding', powered only by natural forces and guided by traditional ecological knowledge. Each segment of the voyage included ~12 individuals, including an MO physician. The entire WWV included 172 ports-of-call, 36 legs and 250+ crew members. PARTICIPANTS: We purposively sampled all MO physicians who participated in the WWV and enrolled 87% of eligible MOs (n=20 of 23). We conducted two focus groups (n=17=11+6, 85%) and three individual informant interviews (n=3, 15%). RESULTS: The four major themes: (1) Relationships; (2) Preventive Care to Enhance Health; (3) Holistic Health and Wellbeing beyond Voyaging and (4) Spiritual Transformative Experience, strongly suggest that ocean voyaging aboard a traditional voyaging canoe enhanced human health and well-being. The overall impact to perceived health and well-being extended beyond any increase in physical exercise. Essentially, traditional Polynesian ocean voyaging provided a cultural-based context for holistic health and well-being that influenced multiple levels and multiple dimensions. CONCLUSION: Polynesian ocean voyaging was perceived as positively associated with holistic health and overall well-being and it may offer a new approach to confront complex health disparities.

In 2014-2016 more than 600 specimens of semi-solid crude oil were recovered from 30 ocean beaches along the coastline of South Australia, as part of the recently completed Great Australian Bight Research Program. All are believed to be products of submarine oil seepage. Their source-specific biomarker signatures provide the basis for their assignment to sixteen oil families, some previously unrecognised. Two of these families (asphaltite and asphaltic tar) likely originated from Cretaceous marine source rocks in the offshore Bight Basin. The others comprise waxy oils of lacustrine, fluvio-deltaic and marine source affinity. Their biomarker characteristics do not match those of any Australian crude oil. However, they are strikingly similar to those of oils found in Cenozoic and Mesozoic basins throughout the Indonesian Archipelago and elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a toxic gas produced via breakdown of organic matter. Hydrogen sulfide exposure can cause symptoms ranging in severity from mild effects (dizziness, headache, nausea) to severe lactic acidosis, respiratory failure, pulmonary edema, cardiac arrhythmias and death. Treatment modalities include oral countermeasures and 100% FiO2 with supportive therapy. However, case studies utilizing hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy have been reported with general benefit seen in severe cases of toxicity. In this report, cases of mild to moderate H2S toxicity occurred aboard a U.S. Navy ship, resulting in a mass casualty incident of more than 30 patients. Patient symptoms included dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and one patient with altered mental status. Most patients' symptoms resolved after several hours of supportive therapy, but six patients had symptoms refractory to 100% FiO2 at 1 atm. These six patients received HBO2 therapy with a USN Treatment Table 9 after consultation with the local emergency room and hyperbaric assets. Four separate chambers were utilized, including two chambers onboard USN ships and the local explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) chamber. Complete resolution of symptoms in all six patients was achieved within the first breathing period. Patients were monitored after treatment aboard the USN ship medical department. No patients required emergency department care. These cases demonstrate an expanded use of HBO2 to include moderate cases of H2S toxicity refractory to first-line therapy.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to clarify the effects of underlying diseases on clinical outcomes of patients aboard a world cruise ship. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included patients who sought physician consultations at an onboard clinic on a 105-day world cruise (September-December 201X) on a ship chartered by a Japanese travel agency. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to ascertain whether any concurrent disease, such as hypertension, was associated with additional onboard treatment by the primary physician or serious events, including unexpected final disembarkation, temporary disembarkation for hospitalization ashore, shore-side referral, and onboard clinic admission. RESULTS: Of 313 patients, 182 (58%) had at least one underlying disease. Sixty-eight (22%) required additional treatment, and 24 (8%) experienced serious events. After adjusting for age, sex, and underlying diseases, the 60-69- and 70-74-year age groups had a lower risk of serious events than the ≤59-year age group (odds ratio [OR], 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.24, 0.069-0.81; p = 0.022 and 0.045, 0.0051-0.47; p = 0.0055). Underlying disease was associated with serious events (OR, 95% CI: 3.2, 1.1-9.5; p = 0.036). CONCLUSIONS: Unexpected events can occur in patients on world cruises regardless of age. Preexisting diseases may confer higher risk of serious events.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on workplace health promotion interventions at sea is scattered and includes different methodological approaches. The continued focus on lifestyle and health promotion on land-based industries makes it pertinent to evaluate available data from maritime settings to gain systematic knowledge on the field. METHODS: In this systematic review, we systematically searched PubMed and NLM Gateway (for MEDLINE), Institute of Scientific Information/Web of Science (ISI/WOS), and SCOPUS up to January 2019 using standard keywords including lifestyle interventions in the maritime setting. Two independent reviewers assessed papers and extracted the data. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Due to significant heterogeneity between studies, the effectiveness of interventions was presented as a qualitative synthesis. RESULTS: After the initial search and refinement based on a total of 4432 records, ten articles met eligibility criteria and were included in the final review. Six studies originated from US maritime settings, 3 studies were conducted on Danish seafarers and one study came from Finland. The main focus of 6 studies was educational interventions including stress management, healthy eating, anti-smoking and anti-drinking sessions, sexual behavior program, and advice about preventive strategies. Four studies described the implementation of interventions, including micro-nutrient supplementation, physical activity, and pharmacotherapy. Follow-up assessments occurred over a time period ranging from 80 days to 2 years. Three studies found a positive though limited effect of structural and/or education interventions in maritime settings. The quality of all included studies was modest. CONCLUSION: Results of this systematic review show that a limited number of studies of lifestyle interventions in the maritime setting exist and that the quality of them is generally modest. Also, most of the interventions identified have failed to demonstrate substantial health benefits for seafarers. Systematic review registration number in PROSPERO: CRD42019134533.

The sports performance of dinghy sailors is determined by their state of nutrition and hydration. Sports supplementation plays a prominent role in elite sailors, being essential in periods of competition due to its characteristics. This study aims to analyze the consumption of sports supplements (SS) in the different categories and groups of sailors based on the level of evidence, differentiating according to sex, competitive level, and type of boat. A total of 42 sailors from national and international levels and belonging to the Laser, 420, Techno-293 and RS:X classes participated in this study. They completed a questionnaire with questions about the consumption of SS and the possible repercussions on health and/or sports performance. The results were analyzed based on the different categorizations and group organization recently established by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), as well as by sex, level of competition and class to which the participants belonged. The male sailors and those who competed internationally had a higher prevalence in the consumption of SS. Among the classes of vessels studied, class 420 had the lowest SS consumption. SS intake was higher during competition days, regardless of sex or level of competition. Based on the classification established by the AIS, statistically significant differences were observed in sex, level of competition, and the type of boat.
