[Local antibacterial therapy for the inflammatory diseases of the external and middle ear].

The objective of the present study was to estimate the efficacy and safety of candibioic designed for the treatment of the patients presenting with diffuse otitis externa and chronic otitis media. The open randomized trial included 40 patients with diffuse otitis externa and 40 ones with chronic otitis media who had undergone a surgical sanitation procedure. Their standard clinical and otorhinolaryngological examination was supplemented by the characteristic of clinical symptoms and personal complaints using the 10-score scale. The composite preparation candibiotic was found to be equally effective for the treatment of both diffuse otitis externa and chronic otitis media. The results of the study give reason to recommend the use of candibiotic as an efficacious and safe drug for the treatment of these conditions.

[The use of sinupret in the combined treatment of acute otitis media in children].

This controlled prospective study included 40 children (18 boys and 22 girls) hospitalized for the treatment of acute suppurative otitis media. Mean age of the patients was 4.5 years. Their condition was evaluated after cessation of purulent discharge and closure of perforation while acoustic impedancometry still revealed the presence of exudate in the tympanum. The treatment included administration of nasal decongestants, systemic antibacterial therapy, sanation of the nasal and pharyngonasal cavities by transposition or puncture of maxillary sinuses. Some patients (study group) were given sinupret in age-adjusted doses. Signs of exudates disappeared within a mean of 4.2 days after the onset of therapy compared with 7.7 days in the control group (p<0.01). It is concluded that the inclusion of sinupret in the combined treatment of acute suppurative otitis media promotes rapid and efficacious sanation of the tympanic cavity and hearing restoration.

[Local treatment of otitis media and otitis externa: the role of quinolones]. / Lokale behandeling van otitis media en otitis externa: rol van de quinolones.

Patients suffering from suppurative otitis media and externa, and in whom pseudomonas species are present, were treated twice daily by local instillation of ciprofloxacin 0.2%. Treatment resulted in clinical and bacteriological cure in all 17 patients, including patients resistant to previous therapy, within a mean time of six days. There were no adverse effects except one case of local allergy. Audiograms remained unchanged. Local therapy with ciprofloxacin is a welcome addition but should be reserved for cases resistant to other therapy.

Sobrerol in the treatment of secretory otitis media in childhood.

The therapeutic activity and tolerability of sobrerol, a muco-active agent, were evaluated in 30 children (aged 5-10 years) with secretory otitis media. The drug was administered once daily by inhalation for 10 days consecutively at a dose of 40 mg/3 ml. Clinical assessments showed a significant improvement in the objective measures together with good tolerability. Moreover, sobrerol was shown to improve impedance values; this is an important aspect of the modifications induced by this drug in diseases involving the ear.
