Introduction: Rhinophonia aperta may result from velopharyngeal insufficiency. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been discussed in the context of muscle strengthening. The aim of this study was to evaluate in healthy subjects whether NMES can change the velopharyngeal closure pattern during phonation and increase muscle strength. Method: Eleven healthy adult volunteers (21-57 years) were included. Pressure profiles were measured by high resolution manometry (HRM): isolated sustained articulation of /a/ over 5 s (protocol 1), isolated NMES applied to soft palate above motor threshold (protocol 2) and combined articulation with NMES (protocol 3). Mean activation pressures (MeanAct), maximum pressures (Max), Area under curve (AUC) and type of velum reactions were compared. A statistical comparison of mean values of protocol 1 versus protocol 3 was carried out using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Ordinally scaled parameters were analyzed by cross table. Results: MeanAct values measured: 17.15±20.69 mmHg (protocol 1), 34.59±25.75 mmHg (protocol 3) on average, Max: 37.86±49.17 mmHg (protocol 1), 87.24±59.53 mmHg (protocol 3) and AUC: 17.06±20.70 mmHg.s (protocol 1), 33.76±23.81 mmHg.s (protocol 3). Protocol 2 produced velum reactions on 32 occasions. These presented with MeanAct values of 13.58±12.40 mmHg, Max values of 56.14±53.14 mmHg and AUC values of 13.84±12.78 mmHg.s on average. Statistical analysis comparing protocol 1 and 3 showed more positive ranks for MeanAct, Max and AUC. This difference reached statistical significance (p=0.026) for maximum pressure values. Conclusions: NMES in combination with articulation results in a change of the velopharyngeal closure pattern with a pressure increase of around 200% in healthy individuals. This might be of therapeutic benefit for patients with velopharyngeal insufficiency.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the efficacy of game training combined with surface electromyography biofeedback (sEMG-BF) in the treatment of dysphagia after early stroke. METHODS: Ninety patients with early post-stroke dysphagia (PSD), who were diagnosed and treated from March 2021 to December 2022, were divided randomly into a control group (30 cases), experimental group 1 (30 cases) and experimental group 2 (30 cases). The control group received routine swallowing rehabilitation and transcranial direct current stimulation. Experimental group 1 received sEMG-BF in conjunction with the care provided to the control group. Experimental group 2 received sEMG-BF and game training in addition to the care provided to the control group. Before and after treatment, all three patient groups were evaluated using the WADA water swallowing test, the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS), sEMG and a tongue manometer test. RESULTS: Before treatment, there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) among the three groups of patients in terms of WADA water swallowing rating, FOIS score, submandibular muscle sEMG peak, swallowing time limit and maximum tongue pressure. After treatment, all three groups exhibited improvements in these indices compared with those before treatment (P < 0.05). Experimental group 1 showed greater improvement than the control group (P < 0.05), and experimental group 2 exhibited greater improvement than experimental group 1 and the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Game training combined with sEMG-BF can significantly improve the swallowing function of patients with PSD.

Background: To compare the effectiveness of intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) and/or manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) associated to compression stockings in the maintenance treatment of lymphedema. Patients and methods: Patients in the maintenance phase of lymphedema therapy with MLD and compression since more than a year with stable values for weight and circumferences of ankle and calf were asked to participate in a study: Compression had to be worn daily, (1) 4 weeks IPC+MLD, (2) 4 weeks MLD alone, (3) 4 Weeks IPC alone (Order 1 and 3 was randomized). At the beginning and after each 4 weeks, circumference measurements (by hand and by machine: BT600®, Bauerfeind) were documented, pain and discomfort were assessed, and quality-of-life questionnaires were completed. Results: Of 20 participants, 18 (14 female, 4 male), mean age 59.6 years (48-89) could be evaluated. 11 subjects had bilateral, 7 unilateral, 5 primary, 13 secondary lymphedema since 2-20 years (mean 7.7), the subjects had received MLD and compression for 2-14 years (mean 6.4), 1-3 times per week (mean 1.5). The BMI ranged between 21 and 47 (mean 33.7). No differences between any phases were found for: Calf and thigh volume, circumference of calf. Only the ankle circumference was significant less (-0.22 cm) when using "both" (IPC+MLD). Compared to before the study, quality of life was better in all three phases, but with a significantly higher improvement in the phases with IPC than in the phases without. Conclusions: There were no differences in objective measurement between MLD alone, IPC alone or both, excepting the minimal significant difference in ankle circumference after IPC+MLD. QOL favored IPC application. Considering the economic consequences of these results, a change of maintenance therapy with MLD weekly over years in favor of permanent care with IPC and few appointments of MLD per year should be considered and further investigated.

PURPOSE: To correlate the findings regarding the myofunctional orofacial examination, tongue pressure and surface electromyography (sEMG) of deglutition in individuals with different orofacial myofunctional disorders. METHODS: 44 patients (20 males and 24 females, aged between 17 and 63 years old) with different orofacial myofunctional changes were clinically assessed using the Expanded Protocol of Orofacial Myofunctional Evaluation with Scores (OMES-E). In addition, the range of mandibular movements and facial anthropometry were measured, along with the assessment of the tongue pressure (tip and dorsum) and of the electrical activity of the suprahyoid muscles during deglutition, using surface electromyography (sEMG). RESULTS: The statistical analysis found weak correlations between tongue dorsum pressure values, suggesting that the greater the measurement of the lower third of the face, the lower the pressure of the tongue dorsum; the greater the measurement of the overlaps (vertical and horizontal), the higher the pressure of the tongue dorsum; the higher the score from the orofacial evaluation and orofacial functions assessment, the higher the pressure of the tongue dorsum; and the higher the pressure of the tongue dorsum, the higher the pressure of the tongue tip. CONCLUSION: The present study results indicate that the orofacial myofunctional changes found in different groups of patients are more related to the maxillomandibular discrepancies than to the pathologies investigated herein.


OBJETIVO: correlacionar os achados da avaliação clínica miofuncional orofacial, pressão de língua e da eletromiografia de superfície (EMGs) da deglutição de grupos de pacientes com diferentes alterações da motricidade orofacial. MÉTODO: 44 pacientes (20 homens e 24 mulheres com idades entre 17 e 63 anos), com diferentes alterações miofuncionais orofaciais foram avaliados por meio da Avaliação Miofuncional Orofacial com Escores Expandido (AMIOFE-E), avaliação da amplitude mandibular e antropometria facial, mensuração da pressão de língua (ponta e dorso) e exame de Eletromiografia de Superfície (EMGs) em região supra hioidea na tarefa de deglutição de saliva e diferentes volumes de água. RESULTADOS: a análise estatística encontrou algumas correlações fracas que envolvem a pressão do dorso de língua e sugerem que quanto maior for a medida do terço inferior, menor será a pressão do dorso da língua; quanto maior for a medida dos trespasses (vertical e horizontal) maior será a pressão do dorso da língua; quanto maior for a pontuação da avaliação de postura e funções orofaciais, maior será a pressão do dorso de língua e quanto maior for a pressão do dorso de língua, maior será a pressão da ponta da língua. CONCLUSÃO: os resultados sugerem que as alterações miofuncionais orofaciais encontradas nos diferentes grupos de pacientes estão mais relacionadas às discrepâncias maxilomandibulares do que às patologias pesquisadas no presente estudo.

PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness of myotherapy exercises in increasing tongue pressure and strength. A secondary aim was to analyze the exercise types, training parameters, and functional results. RESEARCH STRATEGIES: This systematic literature review was based on the Prisma protocol guidelines. SELECTION CRITERIA: The review included clinical trials that assessed the effects of tongue muscle training, with no restriction on the language or year of publication. DATA ANALYSIS: The steps included eliminating duplicates; reading abstracts and excluding studies that did not meet the inclusion criteria; reading selected articles in full text, extracting important data, and gathering them in a table; and meta-analysis, using the inverse variance method. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute's tool. The quality of evidence was assessed with the Grading System of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation. RESULTS: The meta-analysis indicated a significant increase in maximum anterior and posterior pressure as an effect of training. The most performed exercise was tongue pressure against the palate. However, training parameters varied between studies, and whether exercises alone led to functional improvement cannot be stated. The quality of the evidence was considered low. CONCLUSION: Myotherapy exercises increased anterior and posterior tongue pressure in adults, but the quality of this evidence is low. The studies used various exercise types and training parameters. It cannot be stated whether exercises alone led to functional improvement.


OBJETIVO: Avaliar a eficácia de exercícios mioterápicos no aumento da pressão e da força lingual. Buscou-se, de forma secundária, analisar quais os tipos de exercícios utilizados, os parâmetros de treinamento e os resultados funcionais obtidos. ESTRATÉGIA DE PESQUISA: Revisão sistemática da literatura guiada conforme as diretrizes do protocolo Prisma. CRITÉRIOS DE SELEçÃO: Foram incluídos ensaios clínicos que avaliaram efeitos do treinamento muscular da língua, sem limite quanto ao idioma ou ano de publicação. ANÁLISE DOS DADOS: Incluiu as etapas de eliminação de artigos duplicados; leitura de resumos e exclusão de estudos que não contemplaram os critérios de elegibilidade; leitura na íntegra dos artigos selecionados com extração de informações importantes, reunidas em tabela; e metanálise, realizada por meio do método do inverso da variância. A avaliação da qualidade metodológica dos estudos foi realizada pela ferramenta do Joanna Briggs Institute. A qualidade da evidência foi avaliada pelo Sistema Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation. RESULTADOS: A metanálise indicou aumento significativo da pressão máxima anterior e posterior como efeito do treinamento. O exercício mais utilizado foi pressão de língua contra o palato, mas os parâmetros de treinamento variaram entre estudos, não sendo possível afirmar que exercícios isolados promovem melhora funcional. A qualidade da evidência foi considerada baixa. CONCLUSÃO: Os exercícios mioterápicos promovem o aumento da pressão anterior e posterior da língua de indivíduos adultos, porém a qualidade dessa evidência é baixa. Há variabilidade quanto aos tipos de exercícios utilizados e parâmetros de treinamento. Não é possível afirmar que os exercícios promovem melhora funcional.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pressure biofeedback is a tool that can detect the movement of a structure and may be used as an indicator of muscle function. It's widely used to measure the transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle activity. Pressure biofeedback (PBU) monitors the abdominal wall movement by measuring the pressure change during abdominal hollowing and can indirectly evaluate the TrA muscle function, which is considered as a valuable tool. The evaluation of the training of core muscles, including the transversus abdominis, requires a reliable outcome. Various methods using different positions are used to evaluate the transversus abdominis muscle function. However, it is noted that a standard way of evaluation and training still needs to be improved in research and clinical practice. This technical report discusses the optimal position and technique to measure the TrA muscle activity using PBU, with discussions on the merits and demerits of the body positions. METHODS: The technical report is presented with a literature review of the PBU measurement of TrA and through observation in the clinical practice. The evaluation methods of TrA, including the position to activate and isolate, are discussed in detail. RESULTS: Training core muscles does not imply TrA activation, and evaluating isolated TrA and multifidus is essential before intervention. The abdominal drawing-in maneuver effectively activates TrA in various evaluation positions of the body, but when using PBUs, it would be valid in a prone position. DISCUSSION: Different body positions are practiced to train TrA and core muscles using PBU, commonly adopted by practice are in supine. It's noted that most of the studies lack in establishing the effectiveness of the position in evaluating the TrA muscle activity using PBU. The need for insight into an appropriate technique for evaluating TrA activity is addressed in this technical report. This report presents key points on the complete technique and concludes that the prone position is superior to other positions and recommended for measuring and recording the TrA activity using a PBU.

OBJECTIVES: To establish preliminary gait training dosage parameters for patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) by determining the within-session and between-session effects of auditory biofeedback training on center of pressure (COP) location during gait. DESIGN: Observational Longitudinal. SETTING: Laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: 19 participants with CAI, 8 participants who did not receive auditory biofeedback (NoFeedback group) and 11 participants who did receive auditory biofeedback (AuditoryFeedback group) over an 8-session 2-week intervention. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: COP location was measured at the start and at each 5-min interval during treadmill walking across all eight 30-min training sessions. RESULTS: The AuditoryFeedback group had significant within-session lateral-to-medial shifts in COP location during only session-1 at the 15-min (45% of stance; peak mean difference = 4.6 mm), 20-min (35% and 45%; 4.2 mm), and 30-min time intervals (35% and 45%; 4.1 mm). Furthermore, the AuditoryFeedback group had significant between-session lateral-to-medial shifts in COP location at session-5 (35-55% of stance; 4.2 mm), session-7 (35%-95%; 6.7 mm), and session-8 (35%-95%; 7.7 mm). The NoFeedback group had no significant changes in COP location within-sessions or between-sessions. CONCLUSIONS: Participants with CAI who received auditory biofeedback during gait needed an average of 15-min during session-1 to meaningfully shift their COP location medially and 4-sessions before retaining the adapted gait pattern.

One method for managing anxiety, a highly prevalent modern mental health condition, is the calming touch sensations of deep pressure therapy (DPT). Solutions for administering DPT include the Automatic Inflatable DPT (AID) Vest, which we designed in past work. Although benefits of DPT are clear in a subset of the related literature, these benefits are not ubiquitous. There is limited understanding of what factors lead to DPT success for a given user. In this work, we present the findings of a user study ( N = 25) that evaluates the effects of the AID Vest on anxiety. We compared physiological and self-reported measures of anxiety across Active (inflating) and Control (inactive) states of the AID Vest. In addition, we considered the presence of placebo effects and assessed participant comfort with social touch as a potential moderator. The results support our ability to reliably induce anxiety, and show that the Active AID Vest tended to reduce biosignals related to anxiety. We also found a significant relationship between comfort with social touch and reductions in self-reported state anxiety for the Active condition. Those who seek to successfully deploy DPT can benefit from this work.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to determine the lowest possible atmospheric pressure in the 111-152 kPa (1.1-1.5 atmospheres absolute [atm abs]) range that would require the patients to equalise their ears, allowing an effective sham for a 203 kPa (2.0 atm abs) hyperbaric exposure. METHODS: We performed a randomised controlled study on 60 volunteers divided into 3 groups (compression to 111, 132 and 152 kPa (1.1, 1.3, 1.5 atm abs) to determine the minimum pressure to obtain blinding. Secondly, we applied additional blinding strategies (faster compression with ventilation during the fictitious compression time, heating at compression, cooling at decompression) on 25 new volunteers in order to enhance blinding. RESULTS: The number of participants who did not believe they had been compressed to 203 kPa was significantly higher in the 111 kPa compressed arm than in the other two arms (11/18 vs 5/19 and 4/18 respectively; P = 0.049 and P = 0.041, Fisher's exact test). There was no difference between compressions to 132 and 152 kPa. By applying additional blinding strategies, the number of participants who believed they had been compressed to 203 kPa increased to 86.5 %. CONCLUSIONS: A compression to 132 kPa, (1.3 atm abs, 3 metres of seawater equivalent) combined with the additional blinding strategies of forced ventilation, enclosure heating and compression in five minutes, simulates a therapeutic compression table and can be used as a hyperbaric placebo.

Objective. In mammography, breast compression forms an essential part of the examination and is achieved by lowering a compression paddle on the breast. Compression force is mainly used as parameter to estimate the degree of compression. As the force does not consider variations of breast size or tissue composition, over- and undercompression are a frequent result. This causes a highly varying perception of discomfort or even pain in the case of overcompression during the procedure. To develop a holistic, patient specific workflow, as a first step, breast compression needs to be thoroughly understood. The aim is to develop a biomechanical finite element breast model that accurately replicates breast compression in mammography and tomosynthesis and allows in-depth investigation. The current work focuses thereby, as a first step, to replicate especially the correct breast thickness under compression.Approach. A dedicated method for acquiring ground truth data of uncompressed and compressed breasts within magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is introduced and transferred to the compression within x-ray mammography. Additionally, we created a simulation framework where individual breast models were generated based on MR images.Main results. By fitting the finite element model to the results of the ground truth images, a universal set of material parameters for fat and fibroglandular tissue could be determined. Overall, the breast models showed high agreement in compression thickness with a deviation of less than ten percent from the ground truth.Significance. The introduced breast models show a huge potential for a better understanding of the breast compression process.

Low-level laser therapy, or photobiomodulation, utilizes red or near-infrared light for the treatment of pathological conditions due to the presence of intracellular photoacceptors, such as mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, that serve as intermediates for the therapeutic effects. We present an in-detail analysis of the effect of low-intensity LED red light irradiation on the respiratory chain of brain mitochondria. We tested whether low-level laser therapy at 650 nm could alleviate the brain mitochondrial dysfunction in the model of acute hypobaric hypoxia in mice. The irradiation of the mitochondrial fraction of the left cerebral cortex with low-intensity LED red light rescued Complex I-supported respiration during oxidative phosphorylation, normalized the initial polarization of the inner mitochondrial membrane, but has not shown any significant effect on the activity of Complex IV. In comparison, the postponed effect (in 24 h) of the similar transcranial irradiation following hypoxic exposure led to a less pronounced improvement of the mitochondrial functional state, but normalized respiration related to ATP production and membrane polarization. In contrast, the similar irradiation of the mitochondria isolated from control healthy animals exerted an inhibitory effect on CI-supported respiration. The obtained results provide significant insight that can be beneficial for the development of non-invasive phototherapy.

Patients with oral cancer have poor nutritional status before treatment. However, there have been no reports of the detailed evaluation of preoperative oral function in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the preoperative oral function of patients with OSCC and examine the relationship with nutritional status. Oral function measurements (microorganisms, oral dryness, occlusal force, tongue pressure, masticatory function, Eating Assessment Tool, and Postoperative Oral Dysfunction Scale) and Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) data were collected from 51 patients with OSCC (men: 37, women: 14, mean age: 72.1 years) who visited the Shimane University Hospital, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, from September 2019 to September 2021. The tongue was the most prevalent primary gingiva site [22 patients (43.1%)], and 36 patients (70.6%) had advanced cancer. Comparisons between nutritional status and each related factor revealed significant differences in the number of individuals in the household, cancer stage, presence of pulmonary disease, number of teeth, microorganisms (grade), and masticatory function (mg/dL) (p < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis using the total MNA-SF score as the dependent variable with adjustment for confounding factors showed significant association between oral dryness and tongue pressure (p < 0.05). No significant association was found for the Eating Assessment Tool or Postoperative Oral Dysfunction scale. Patients with OSCC may have decreased oral function because of the tumor at the time of diagnosis, which causes a decline in nutritional status. Preoperative interventions are necessary to improve nutrition based on the state of oral function.

Supercritical fluid extraction is a powerful analytical tool and it is willingly used by researchers for the isolation of various components from different matrices. In our study, the carbon dioxide in the supercritical state was used for the extraction of oils from blackcurrant and black cumin seeds. To determine the optimal conditions for the process (temperature, pressure and time), the method of statistical experiment planning and the Box-Behnken design was applied and the yield of the oils and the content of fatty acids (FAs) were taken into consideration. It has been found that an increase in pressure causes an increase in extraction yield (W), and an increase in temperature, both at constant pressure and time, does not significantly change the yield value. Optimal yield values were obtained for both materials under almost similar extraction parameters: 306 bar/ 43 min/ 50 °C (blackcurrant) and 282 bar/ 40 min/ 50 °C (black cumin). The influence of the above parameters (T, p, t) on the content of FAs in the extracts has a slightly different trend. The use of supercritical carbon dioxide for the extraction of blackcurrant and black cumin seeds allowed for high process yield and high-quality, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids oils which can be used as a substrate or final product for industry.

BACKGROUND: A review was conducted to determine a pressure algometry measurement during abdominal examination that reflects clinical settings of traditional Korean medicine. METHODS: After reviewing the previous studies, we have proposed a reference index, common posture and method for performing pressure algometry during abdominal examination. Keyword search using eight databases was performed. To identify the characteristics of pressure algometry during abdominal examination, keywords (e.g., abdomen, abdominal examination) were searched in national Korean databases, including Korean studies Information System (KISS), Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), and Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS). To examine the methods of measuring pressure pain threshold (PPT) with validity and reliability, combination keywords (e.g., PPT, pressure algometry, pressure pain, validity, reliability) were searched in Pubmed, Cochrane library, Google scholar, Ovid Embase, and China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI). RESULTS: A total of 652 articles were identified, and 22 relevant articles were included. The following main indices are proposed as a standardized pressure algometry method during abdominal examination: unit of measurements, measuring tools, target locations, pressure area, pressure rate, posture of patients, and evaluators. Based on the results of the review combined with clinical practice, useful indices for pressure algometer during abdominal examination were derived (target location: CV 12, unit of measurement: MPa, pressure area: 4 cm2, pressure rate: 0.098 MPa/s, posture of patient: supine position, number, and intervals of measurement: three consecutive measurements at intervals of 30 seconds, 5 minutes rest prior to commencement). Postures and method sequence of pressure algometry during abdominal examination are also proposed. CONCLUSIONS: Using standardized indices, postures and method for abdominal examination in clinical settings will help make objective assessments.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the firmness of used mattress coil springs from the areas bearing greatest body weight versus areas subjected to little compression. METHODS: Weight-bearing springs (WBS) extracted from the center of the mattresses (N = 32), and non-weight-bearing springs (NWBS) extracted from the head/foot were of the same mattresses. To determine spring weakness, a 1296-g ingot was placed on the coil, and the compression distance was measured (cm). In addition, a gauge was used to measure the amount of pressure required to compress the coil springs a distance of 2 cm. Comparison between WBS and NWBS data were statistically treated using independent t tests and a 1-way analysis of variance. RESULTS: There were no significant group differences in weight or height in unloaded coils. However, there were significant (P < .05) differences in coil spring compression distance under load (WBS = 2.78 ± 0.34 cm; NWBS = 1.52 ± 0.39 cm) and force gauge compression (WBS = 1090.51 ± 88.42 g; NWBS = 1213.12 ± 71.38 g) between groups. CONCLUSION: This study found that WBSs were weaker when compressed than the NWBS from used mattresses, and such characteristics may not be visually apparent in a mattress when not in use. Thus, coil springs in bedding systems may eventually fail to provide the initial structural support after use. Such sagging may compromise sleep posture with accompanying poor sleep quality and quantity.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) arise from one (or a combination) of two basic generation mechanisms in the cochlea: nonlinear distortion and linear reflection. As a result of having distinct generation processes, these two classes of emissions may provide non-redundant information about hair-cell integrity and show distinct sensitivities to cochlear pathology. Here, we characterize the relationship between reflection and distortion emissions in normal hearers across a broad frequency and stimulus-level space using novel analysis techniques. Furthermore, we illustrate the promise of this approach in a small group of individuals with mild-moderate hearing loss. A "joint-OAE profile" was created by measuring interleaved swept-tone stimulus-frequency OAEs (SFOAEs) and 2f1-f2 distortion-product OAEs (DPOAEs) in the same ears using well-considered parameters. OAE spectra and input/output functions were calculated across five octaves. Using our specific recording protocol and analysis scheme, SFOAEs in normal hearers had higher levels than did DPOAEs, with the most pronounced differences occurring at the highest stimulus levels. Also, SFOAE compression occurred at higher stimulus levels (than did DPOAE compression) and its growth in the compressed region was steeper. The diagnostic implications of these findings and the influence of the measurement protocol on both OAEs (and on their relationship) are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Limited knowledge exists regarding whether transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES)-based exercise can improve the lingual pressure generation. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effect of submental TES with two different pulse durations (PD) coupled with isometric lingual exercises on lingual pressure measures. METHODS: Twenty-eight healthy volunteers were divided into two submental TES groups: short PD (300 µs) and long PD (700 µs). The Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI) was used for lingual pressure measurements and exercise. In total, participants attended six exercise sessions 3 days per week for 2 consecutive weeks. Maximum and swallowing lingual pressures were measured 1 h following each exercise session and 3 days after the final session to assess any detraining effect. Data were analysed using repeated measure ANOVA. RESULTS: Mean maximum lingual pressure change was significantly greater in TES with short PD versus the long PD condition following the first week of exercise. Following the 2-week exercise, a significant increase was found in mean maximum lingual pressure for short and long PD conditions compared with the baseline. However, no significant difference was found between PD conditions for maximum lingual pressure. Likewise, no significant differences in swallowing lingual pressure were found compared with the baseline or across the two TES conditions. CONCLUSION: Although short PD induced greater gain in maximum lingual pressure than the long PD after week 1, the enhanced effect faded after week 2, leading to a comparable increase in maximum lingual pressure for both groups. However, increased gain in maximum lingual pressure was not transferred to lingual pressure during swallowing.

In this study, the changes of structure and bioactivity of polysaccharides from large leaf yellow tea (LYTP) were investigated under ultra-high pressure (UHP). Native yellow tea polysaccharide were treatmented with ultra-high pressure (200, 400 and 600 MPa) for 5 min to yield yellow tea polysaccharide including 200 MPa-LYTP, 400 MPa-LYTP and 600 MPa-LYTP. It was found that the monosaccharide composition of LYTP changed significantly after the ultra-high pressure treatment. The molecular weight (Mw) of 200 MPa-LYTP (from 563.6 to 11.7 kDa), 400 MPa-LYTP (from 372.2 to 11.8 kDa) and 600 MPa-LYTP (from 344 to 11.6 kDa) sharply decreased upon ultra-high pressure treatment compared with LYTP (771.5 kDa), coincidentally particle size was also significantly reduced for 200 MPa-LYTP (23.2 %), 400 MPa-LYTP (40.2 %) and 600 MPa-LYTP (25.9 %). The results of the scanning electron microscope showed that ultra-high pressure also changed the surface and spatial morphology of LYTP. LYTP after ultra-high pressure treatment (UHP-LYTP) could further ameliorate alcohol-induced liver injury in mice. In addition, UHP treatment can more efficiently remove protein than the Sevages method. With the gradual removal of protein, its hepatoprotective effect increased. These findings demonstrated that UHP treatment could change the primary structure and spatial structure of LYTP, increase the content of acidic polysaccharides, and improve its bioactivity.

Wearable health monitoring devices allow for measuring physiological parameters without restricting individuals' daily activities, providing information that is reflective of an individual's health and well-being. However, these systems need to be accurate, power-efficient, unobtrusive and simple to use to enable a reliable, convenient, automatic and ubiquitous means of long-term health monitoring. One such system can be embedded in an insole to obtain physiological data from the plantar aspect of the foot that can be analyzed to gain insight into an individual's health. This manuscript provides a comprehensive review of insole-based sensor systems that measure a variety of parameters useful for overall health monitoring, with a focus on insole-based PPD measurement systems developed in recent years. Existing solutions are reviewed, and several open issues are presented and discussed. The concept of a fully integrated insole-based health monitoring system and considerations for future work are described. By developing a system that is capable of measuring parameters such as PPD, gait characteristics, foot temperature and heart rate, a holistic understanding of an individual's health and well-being can be obtained without interrupting day-to-day activities. The proposed device can have a multitude of applications, such as for pathology detection, tracking medical conditions and analyzing gait characteristics.
