In folk medicine, the almond nut (Terminalia catappa) and orange peel (Citrus sinensis) are cost-effective sources of nutraceutical utilized in the treatment of degenerative diseases. Hyperlipidemia and hypertension are two pathological conditions implicated in cardiovascular disorders. This study sought to evaluate the cardiomodulatory effect of almond-citrus peel fortified shortbread in hyperlipidemic-hypertensive rats induced by high fat diet and Nω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester. The experimental animals were divided into eight groups. The experimental rats were fed with shortbread supplemented with almond and citrus peel at varying inclusions of 0.2% citrus, 50% almond, and almond (50%)- citrus (0.2%) for 21 days. The mean arterial blood pressure (MABP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and lipid profile of the experimental rats were measured. Thereafter, the activities of angiotensin-1-converting enzyme (ACE), arginase, malondialdehyde (MDA), phosphodiesterase-5, nitric oxide (NO), and antioxidant indices were evaluated. The result showed significant elevation in SBP, MABP, blood cholesterol, triglyceride, ACE, arginase, activities, and MDA levels in the heart tissue of the untreated rats. In contrast, the antioxidant status and NO level were significantly decreased in the untreated groups. Remarkably, the treatment with almond-citrus peel fortified shortbread and the individual effect of almond (50%) and citrus peel (0.2%) all reversed these trends in the hyperlipidemic-hypertensive rats. Intriguingly, the blend of almond (50%)-citrus peel (0.2%) fortified shortbread showed the best antioxidative and cardioprotective effect. The results suggest that almond and citrus peel offer potentials as therapeutic agent in the prevention and management of hyperlipidemia and hypertension.

Nuts have been part of the human diet since our early ancestors, and their use goes beyond nutritional purposes, for example, as aromatic sources for dairy products. This work explores the potential of almond (Prunus dulcis (Mill.) DA Webb), hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.), and walnut (Juglans regia L.) extracts as sources of food flavouring agents, suggesting a new added-value application for lower quality or excess production fruits. The extracts were obtained by supercritical fluid extraction with carbon dioxide and characterized by: quantification of the volatile fraction by HS-SPME GC-MS; sensory perception and description; and cytotoxicity against Vero cells. All extracts revealed potential as flavouring ingredients due to terpene abundance. No significant differences were observed for the minimal sensory perception, in which the odour threshold values ranged from 8.3 × 10-4 to 6.9 × 10-3 µg·mL-1 for walnuts and almonds extracts, respectively. In contrast, the cytotoxic potential differed significantly among the extracts, and P. dulcis extract presented lower cytotoxicity. Notes as woody, fresh, and green were identified in the volatile intensifiers obtained from the P. dulcis extract. Thus, almond extract was identified as the most promising ingredient to increase the sensory value of food products, namely bread. This potential was verified by an increase in the odour perception of bread after adding 4 µL of extract to each 100 g of bread dough. The quantified eucalyptol and d-limonene terpenes - found in the P. dulcis extract - have improved the release of the pleasant and natural volatile compounds from bread crust and crumb compared to the control bread chemical and sensory profiles.

In the processing field, there is a saying that "seed drugs be stir-fried". Bitter almond (BA) is a kind of seed Chinese medicine. BA need be used after being fried. To distinguish raw bitter almonds (RBA) from processed products and prove the rationality of "seed drugs be stir-fried", we analyzed the RBA and five processed products (scalded bitter almonds, fried bitter almonds, honey fried bitter almonds, bran fried bitter almonds, bitter almonds cream) using RP-HPLC fingerprints and chemometric methods. The similarity between RBA and processed products was 0.733∼0.995. Hierarchically clustered heatmap was used to evaluate the changes in components. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used for classification, and all samples are distinguished according to RBA and five processing methods. Six chemical markers were obtained by partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The content and degradation rate of amygdalin and ß-glucosidase activity were determined. Compared with RBA, the content and degradation rate of amygdalin, and ß-glucosidase activity were increased in bitter almonds cream. The content and degradation rate were decreased, and ß-glucosidase was inactivated in other processed products. The above results showed that stir-frying had the best effect. The results showed that processing can ensure the stability of RBA quality, and the saying "seed drugs be stir-fried" is reasonable.

In this study we developed a new extract, by the use of conventional solid-solvent extraction and a food-grade hydroalcoholic solvent, rich in phenolic and triterpenoid components from almon hull to be employed as functional ingredient in food, pharma and cosmetic sectors. Two autochthonous Sicilian cultivars ('Pizzuta' and 'Romana') and an Apulian modern cultivar ('Tuono') have been tested for the production of the extract. Results showed that the two Sicilian varieties, and in particular the 'Romana' one, present the best characteristics to obtain extracts rich in triterpenoids and hydroxycinnamic acids, useful for the production of nutraceutical supplements. About triterpenoids, the performance of the hydroalcoholic extraction process allowed to never go below 46% of recovery for 'Pizzuta' samples, with significantly higher percentages of recovery for 'Tuono' and 'Romana' extracts (62.61% and 73.13%, respectively) while hydroxycinnamic acids were recovered at higher recovery rate (84%, 89% and 88% for 'Pizzuta', 'Romana' and 'Tuono' extracts, respectively). Invitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities exerted by the extracts showed promising results with P. aeruginosa being the most affected strain, inhibited up to the 1/8 dilution with 'Romana' extract. All the three tested extracts exerted an antimicrobial action up to 1/4 dilutions but 'Romana' and 'Pizzuta' extracts always showed the greatest efficacy.

This study was designed to investigate the efficacies of almond and date fruits on redox imbalance and enzymes relevant to the pathogenesis of erectile dysfunction. The total polyphenol contents, ferric reducing antioxidant power, and vitamin C content were determined spectrophotometrically. Phenolic and amino acid compositions were quantified using HPLC; meanwhile, the antioxidant activities were determined using DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and metal chelation. Also, the effect of almond and date extract on advanced glycated end-products (AGEs) formation, arginase, and phosphodiesterase-5 activities was evaluated in vitro. Thereafter, the influence of almond and date supplemented diets on copulatory behaviors in normal rats was assessed, followed by arginase and phosphodiesterase-5 activities determination in vivo. The results revealed that date and almond extracts exerted antioxidant properties, prevented AGEs formation in vitro, and inhibited arginase and phosphodiesterase-5 activities in vitro and in vivo. Besides, almond and date supplemented diets significantly enhance sexual behaviors in normal rats when compared with the control. Among the active compounds identified were gallic acid, ellagic acid, quercetin, and rutin. All the 20 basic amino acids were identified. Given the aforementioned, date and almond could represent a reliable source of functional foods highly rich in compounds with antioxidant activity, and arginase and PDE-5 inhibitory properties. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Fruits are essential part of the human diet that furnish the body with important nutrients. Despite the crucial roles of fruits in human diets, some fruits like almond and date are underutilized among Nigerians. However, we characterized the important compounds present in these fruits and how their presence contributes to the biological activities of the fruits. Finally, we relate the chemical composition and the observed biological activities to the overall health and wellness of the consumers.

The active ingredients of the Pyretrin-D trichological cosmetic series, namely benzyl benzoate, Dalmatian pyrethrum daisy, Cistus incanus, tea tree oil and geranium oil, almond acid and arginine were tested in respect to the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis. The paper describes the application of Dalmatian pyrethrum daisy and the excipient. Methods and devices used to confirm the effectiveness of the tested formulations included the TrichoScope Polarizer Dino-Lite (MEDL4HM) and the scanning electron microscope (SEM).

BACKGROUND: Bone fractures are medical emergencies that require prompt intervention to help return bone to its normal function. Various methods and treatments have been utilized to increase the speed and efficiency of bone repair. This study aimed to investigate the treatment effects of Prunus dulcis aqueous extract on tibial bone healing in rabbits. METHODS: All animals were distributed in five groups with six rats in each group, including the sham group, the control group in which tibial lesion was made and received distilled water, treatment groups with 150 mg kg-1, 300 mg kg-1 doses of Prunus dulcis extract, and osteocare treated group. Biochemical blood factors including calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase (on days 0, 10, 30, and 50), biomarkers of oxidative stress such as GPx, CAT, and MDA (on days 10 and 30), radiological evaluation, histopathological parameters, and osteocalcin immunohistochemical expression were assessed. RESULTS: The data showed calcium levels in the treatment groups increased significantly from day 10 to day 50, respectively, and blood phosphorus levels decreased from day 10 to day 50 in the treatment groups. Alkaline phosphatase initially increased and then decreased in treatment groups. In the treatment groups, GPx and CAT levels significantly increased, and the serum amount of MDA reduced. The best antioxidant results were related to the extract-treated group with a higher dose. Radiographic score was significantly higher in the treatment groups than the control group on day 30. Based on the pathological findings, the healing occurred faster in the extract-treated group with a higher dose. Osteocalcin expression was significantly higher in the control group than that in the treatment groups. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with Prunus dulcis extract with a dosage of 300 mg/kg accelerated tibial bone healing in rabbits.

Yogurt drinks can potentially be an appropriate medium for delivering probiotics to consumers. This study investigated the influences of the water-soluble fraction of bitter almond gum (SBAG) and its conjugate with sodium caseinate (SBAG-SC) compared to carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and inulin, respectively, on the physical stability of casein micelles and the viability of the probiotic culture (Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5) in probiotic yogurt drink during cold storage. The addition of SBAG-SC conjugate to the drinks successfully prevented phase separation for a longer time than CMC. CMC-based drinks exhibited a strong shear-thinning response. Adding SBAG helped keep Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 viable above the recommended level for probiotic products. However, the SBAG showed relatively less prebiotic property than inulin. This study demonstrated that SBAG-SC conjugate has a high potential for stabilizing applications in yogurt and yogurt products.

BACKGROUND: Water scarcity is a worldwide problem that leads to environmental and economic issues. Agriculture is one of the main consumers of water for irrigation and fertilization and almond is the major tree nut crop in the Mediterranean area. Furthermore, there is a continuous growing demand for healthy, vegan and sustainable products. Consequently, the present study aimed to chemically characterize almond milk powder enriched with probiotics manufactured from hydroSOStainable almonds (i.e. generated under water stress conditions). Almond milk powder enriched with probiotic bacteria was produced with almonds grown under optimal irrigation conditions (100% of the crop evapotranspiration) and was chemically compared to the samples made from hydroSOStainable almonds. Antioxidant activity, total phenolic content (TPC), minerals, organic acids and sugars, fatty acids, and descriptive sensory analysis were evaluated. RESULTS: The results showed that almond milk powder produced from hydroSOStainable almonds had a higher content of TPC, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), PUFAs/saturated fatty acids (SFAs) ratio and PUFAs/monounsaturated fatty acids ratio, as well as almond and nutty flavors. Moderate and sustained deficit irrigation leads to powders with a higher content of PUFAs and PUFAs/SFAs ratio, which are parameters of utmost importance for health. CONCLUSION: Using these strategies, between 66% and 76% of the irrigation water can be saved, producing hydroSOStainable almond milk powder higher in TPC and PUFAs, as well as positive sensory attributes, compared to that from fully irrigated almonds. These findings may have a positive impact in both agriculture and food industry, allowing water savings and high quality and sustainable food products to be obtained. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

This study was conducted to evaluate effects of a sweet almond meal (SAM) as a source of protein on performance and immune responses of broiler chickens. Treatments consisted of different levels of SAM (7%, 14%, 21% and 28% of diet) and control diet that was performed in a completely randomized design in 42 days. Body weight gain (BWG) and feed intake (FI) were recorded weekly. Carcass characteristics and blood variables were measured on the 42 day of age. Immune response to sheep red blood cell (SRBC) was assessed at d 35 and d 42 (7 days after each injection). White blood cell count was done at d 28. The results showed that chickens fed 28% of SAM had lowest FI during the experiment. During grower period and also whole period of experiment, BWG was highest in chickens that consumed 7% SAM. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) significantly increased in chickens fed 28% SAM compared to the other treatments during grower period and also whole period of the experiment. The relative weight of thigh and breast significantly decreased and the relative weight of GIT increased by increasing levels of SAM in the diet. The concentration of cholesterol and LDL significantly decreased in chickens that consumed SAM in the diet. However, the highest glucose and HDL concentration were observed in chickens fed 28% SAM in the diet. Treatments did not have a significant effect on the immune response of broilers (primary and secondary SRBC antibody titres, relative weights of spleen and bursa of fabricius and white blood cell count) (p > 0.05). The results of this study show that a diet supplemented with SAM at the level of 14%, due to the improved FCR and decreased blood cholesterol and LDL concentration, can be a good replacement for soybean meal in broiler chicken's nutrition.

Sweet almond (Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A.Webb) is a known nut, which has long been used in several ethnomedical systems, especially in Persian medicine (PM) for its nutritional and therapeutic activities. In this study, we aimed to provide a summary on traditional uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacological activities of sweet almond. Thus, we reviewed textbooks of PM and electronic literature on traditional medicine. Moreover, the available data on the usage of sweet almond were searched in electronic databases to find articles on its pharmacological properties and phytochemistry. According to phytochemical investigations, this plant contains macronutrients, micronutrients, essential oils, various phenolic compounds, and phytosterols. Current pharmacological studies represent that Prunus dulcis has several biological activities including prebiotic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, anticancer, hepatoprotective, cardiometabolic protection, nootropic, anxiolytic, sedative-hypnotic, and nervous-improving effects. Further clinical trials and meta-analysis are required to draw a definitive conclusion on the efficacy and therapeutic activities of almond.

BACKGROUND: Almond kernels contain phytochemicals with positive health effects in relation to heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Several studies have previously highlighted that almond cell wall encapsulation during digestion and particle size are factors associated with these benefits. In the present study, we have characterized almond oleosomes, natural oil droplets abundant in plants, and we have investigated their integrity during simulated gastrointestinal digestion. METHODS: Oleosomes were visualized on the almond seed surface by imaging mass spectrometry analysis, and then characterized in terms of droplet size distribution by dynamic light scattering and protein profile by liquid chromatography high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry analysis. RESULTS: The almond oleosomes' distribution remained monomodal after in vitro mastication, whereas gastric and duodenal digestion led to a bimodal distribution, albeit characterized mainly by a prevalent population with a droplet size decrease related to a rearrangement of the protein profile. Oleosins, structural proteins found in plant oil bodies, persisted unchanged during simulated mastication, with the appearance of new prunin isoforms after gastric and duodenal digestion. CONCLUSIONS: The rearrangement of the protein profile could limit lipid bioaccessibility. The data improve our understanding of the behavior of almond lipids during gastrointestinal digestion, and may have implications for energy intake and satiety imparted by almonds.

A plain symbiotic almond yogurt-like product was formulated and developed using a plant-based starter YF-L02 (Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus supplemented with Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus paracasei, and Bifidobacterium animalis) and inulin; 0.6% polymerized whey protein (PWP), 0.3% pectin, and 0.05% xanthan gum were optimized for the formula of the almond yogurt alternative. Two groups with/without calcium citrate and vitamin D2 were prepared and analyzed for chemical composition, changes in pH, viscosity, and probiotic survivability during storage at 4 °C for 10 weeks. The results showed that (1) over 10 weeks storage, the differences in the pH, viscosity, and probiotic survivability between the control and the fortified samples were not significant (P > 0.05); (2) the pH of both yogurt samples decreased 0.2 units while their viscosity slightly increased during storage; (3) the populations of L. paracasei and B. animalis remained above 106 cfu/g during the storage, whereas the population of L. acidophilus decreased dramatically during the first 4 weeks, especially the control group; (4) the microstructure was examined by scanning electron microscopy, revealing a compact and denser gel structure formed by 0.6% PWP with the presence of 0.3% pectin and 0.05% xanthan gum. In conclusion, PWP might be a proper gelation agent for the formulation of symbiotic almond yogurt alternative. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: In this study, polymerized whey protein was used as a gelation agent to formulate symbiotic almond yogurt alternatives with comparable physical texture and probiotic survivability to dairy yogurt during storage. This technology may be used for the development of plant-based fermented foods.

The almond cake is a protein-rich residue generated by the mechanical expression of the almond oil. The effects of the aqueous (AEP) and enzyme-assisted aqueous extraction processes (EAEP) on the biological properties of the almond cake protein were evaluated. Total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant capacity, inhibitory effects against crucial enzymes related to metabolic syndrome, antimicrobial potential, and in vitro protein digestibility profile were assessed. EAEP provided the best results for antioxidant capacity by both ORAC (397.2 µmol TE per g) and ABTS (650.5 µmol TE per g) methods and also showed a high (~ 98%) potential for α-glucosidase inhibition. The AEP resulted in protein extracts with the highest lipase inhibition (~ 70%) in a dose-dependent way. Enzymatic kinetic analyses revealed that EAEP generated uncompetitive inhibitors against α-glucosidase, while EAEP, AEP, and HEX-AEP (used as control) generated the same kind of inhibitors against lipase. No protein extract was effective against any of the bacteria strains tested at antimicrobial assays. An in silico theoretical hydrolysis of amandin subunits corroborated with the results found for antioxidant capacity, enzyme inhibitory experiments, and antimicrobial activity. Digestibility results indicated that the digestive proteases used were efficient in hydrolyzing almond proteins, regardless of the extraction applied and that HEX-AEP presented the highest digestibility (85%). In summary, EAEP and AEP skim proteins have the potential to be used as a nutraceutical ingredient. The biological properties observed in these extracts could help mitigate the development of metabolic syndrome where EAEP and AEP skim proteins could be potentially used as a prophylactic therapy for diabetes and obesity, respectively.

Cyanide is a highly toxic anion. Nonetheless, many food plants could produce endogenous cyanide, which causes great danger to human health. Thus, monitoring cyanide in food samples is critically significant. Herein, we rationally developed the first ratiometric near-infrared fluorescent probe for sensing cyanide in food samples. The probe displayed noticeable fluorescence in near-infrared region. Moreover, upon treatment with cyanide, the probe exhibited highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescence response, with limit of detection determined to be 0.075 µM and limit of quantification determined to be 0.25 µM. The ratios of fluorescent intensities at 519 and 688 nm (I519/I688) was linear with added cyanide concentrations from 0 to 80 µM. The relative standard deviations for repeatability and reproducibility varied from 0.55 to 8.94 and from 1.17 to 9.46, respectively. Significantly, probe Hy has been successfully applied for monitoring cyanide in various food samples, such as almonds, sprouting potatoes, and bamboo shoots.

The safety of drinking water is one of the most important public health issues as very high concentrations of metal like iron acts as a useful surrogate for other heavy metals. The present study demonstrates the use of almond skin extract (ASE) for simple and rapid synthesis of antibacterial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for the development of a highly selective and sensitive colorimetric method for the detection of Fe+2 in water samples. The optimization of various biogenic synthesis parameters showed ASE:AgNO3 ratio of 4:1,1 mM of AgNO3, pH 6 and incubation for 10 min at 70 °C were the optimum conditions. The test of antibacterial activity against widely used, representative Gram-negative and positive bacteria showed that AgNPs exhibit good activity against all five tested bacterial strains and comparatively were more effective against Gram-negative bacteria. Further, the test of AgNPs as a colorimetric probe for the detection of 20 different metal ions demonstrated that AgNPs were highly selective and sensitive towards the detection of Fe+2. The study of sensitivity of Fe+2 detection showed 245 ppm as the Limit of detection whereas, the intra-day recovery of Fe+2 in the range of 87.2-100.1 % with %RSD in the range of 4.2-6.5 % and inter-day recovery of Fe+2 in the range of 92.02-96.59 % with %RSD in the range of 2.9-3.8 % demonstrated the excellent precision and accuracy of the assay method. Thus, our AgNPs based selective and sensitive assay can be applied to the analysis of iron in drinking water samples.

BACKGROUND: The study of almond fat stability is essential from a quality control perspective meanly because, in most of the cases, almonds are sold skinned and thermally treated. In this work an alternative method to Rancimat test based on attenuated total reflectance-Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectrometry was adapted for checking the induced degradation at 75 °C of seven almond oil cultivars, three of the top Californian producing varieties, and, four traditional cultivars harvested in Spain. RESULTS: The thermal oil degradation evolution was followed by measuring the changes in the absorbance of the selected FTIR spectra bands (3470, 3006, 1730, 1630, 988 and 970 cm-1 ). A first-order kinetic behaviour was observed, after an induction time in all bands. CONCLUSIONS: Kinetic coefficients and induction times were easily obtained as the absorbance values (from difference spectra) fitted to pseudo-first-order kinetics after the induction time. Principal component analysis was applied to the kinetic parameters to visualize which variables could be useful to classify the almond cultivars based on their resistance to thermal oxidation processes. It was found that selecting only the induction times corresponding to the bands 3470, 3006, 1630 and 970 cm-1 a separate classification of the Californian cultivars from the Spanish ones was possible. Finally, a linear discriminant analysis was assayed using only the four induction times previously selected. Validated classification and correct in 100% of the cases was obtained for all the samples based on their Spanish or Californian origin. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Almond hulls, the main by-product of almond production, are considered a valuable source of bioactive phenolic compounds. This study aimed to characterize the phenolic composition, bioavailability of the phenolic-rich extracts from almond hulls (PEAH), and their protective effect on oxidative stressed Caco-2 cells induced by tert-butylhydroperoxide (t-BOOH). The ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) analysis detected 11 phenolic compounds in the PEAH with high total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Oxidative Caco-2 cell damage was reduced by PEAH, especially at 5 µg/mL, through scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), modulating the cellular endogenous antioxidant system and cell redox at a predictable status. Also, in vitro digestion influenced the phenolic compounds' composition and antioxidant power of PEAH. These results suggested that almond hulls, rich in phenolic compounds, can meliorate the oxidative stressed Caco-2 cells and restore its impaired redox balance, and ultimately improve health benefits.

BACKGROUND: The combination of the nutritional profile of almond milk with the benefits of probiotic bacteria is an interesting development to meet the demand for sustainable and health-promoting food. Almond milk inoculated with probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum (ATCC8014) was spray dried and the almond, its milk, and powders were characterized physicochemically. Samples were characterized in terms of bacterial survival before and after atomization. Bacterial viability and total fatty acid changes were studied during 8 months' storage at 4 and 22 °C. RESULTS: Results showed adequate physicochemical properties and an optimal bacterial survival rate, maintaining almost the same values before and after the spray-drying operation. A decrease was observed in the cell viability for samples stored at 4 °C. However, the cell count was maintained above the minimum level suggested (107 living cells) to allow potential probiotic functionality for 8 months. On the other hand, the count cell of powders stored at 22 °C was below the minimum level required after 6 months. The fatty acids profile was not significantly (P > 0.05) affected by storage time and temperature. CONCLUSION: A new almond-based-product with probiotics was developed to meet consumer demands. Almond nutrients were recovered from almond milk powder and were found to be a good source of K and high in Mg and in monounsaturated fat. The viability of bacteria was assured during 8 months of storage at 4 °C and up to 6 months for samples stored at 22 °C. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Currently, the synthesis of nanostructured inorganic materials with tunable morphology is still a great challenge. In this study, almond skin extract was employed for the biogenic synthesis of selenium nanoparticles with tunable morphologies such as rods and brooms. The effects of various synthesis parameters on morphologies were investigated using UV-Visible spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) which indicated that selenium brooms (SeBrs) were best synthesized using almond skin extract and optimized conditions of SeO2, ascorbic acid, pH, incubation temperature and time. Based on these results, the mechanism of SeBrs synthesis is proposed as having involved four stages such as nucleation, self-assembly, Ostwald ripening, and decomposition. Further, the test of antibacterial activity together with minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum bactericidal concentrations indicated the selective, specific and good activity against B. subtilis. In addition, in situ coating of SeBrs on cotton fabric and its investigation by SEM demonstrated successful coating. Evident from plate-based assay and study of growth kinetics, coated fabric exhibited excellent anti-B. subtilis activity which demonstrated that biogenic SeBrs can be employed to coat cotton fabrics that can be used in operation theatres to reduce the episodes of Bacillus related Bacteraemia.
