Resumen Introducción: Los vertidos de líquidos inflamables pueden producir accidentes graves, principalmente en plantas industriales y en carretera. Para prevenir la dispersión de derrames, se utilizan diversas formas de recolecta, como la absorción con sólidos porosos. Residuos agroindustriales pueden ser aprovechados como materiales sorbentes de líquidos inflamables. Objetivo: Determinar la capacidad de absorción de las biomasas residuales del pedúnculo de la palma aceitera (Elaeis guineensis) y del endocarpio del fruto de coyol (Acrocomia sp.) para cuatro líquidos orgánicos inflamables. Métodos: Las biomasas residuales de E. guineensis y de Acrocomia sp. se evaluaron como sorbentes para combustibles derramados (diésel, queroseno de aviación, queroseno comercial y gasolina). Se midió la cantidad de líquido absorbida por las biomasas a 24 ºC durante una semana, y su cinética de desorción a 50 ºC, usando balanzas de secado. Resultados: La propiedad sorbente del material de Acrocomia sp. no fue satisfactoria, comparada con el pedúnculo de E. guineensis, debido a diferencias en arquitectura residual del material orgánico. Esta última biomasa muestra una capacidad de absorción para los combustibles de 2.4 ± 0.2 cm3 g-1 a 24 ºC. La diatomita absorbe mayor cantidad de los combustibles estudiados, pero la difusión de estos fluidos a 50 ºC por la matriz mineral es solo 0.26 ± 0.09 veces lo observado para el material de E. guineensis, como resultado del mayor grado de tortuosidad de los poros de la diatomita. Conclusiones: El pedúnculo de palma aceitera (E. guineensis) mostró un adecuado potencial desempeño para la aplicación pasiva en la mitigación de los riesgos de incendio, con respecto a la diatomita. El endocarpio del fruto de Acrocomia sp. no resultó útil para esta operación de recuperación.


Abstract Introduction: Spills of flammable liquids can lead to serious accidents, mainly in industrial plants and on roads. To prevent the spread of spills, various forms of collection are used, such as absorption with porous solids. Agroindustrial waste can be used as sorbent materials for flammable liquids. Objective: To determine the sorption capacity of the residual empty-fruit bunch of oil-palm (Elaeis guineensis) and the macaw palm (Acrocomia sp.) nutshell for four organic flammable liquids. Methods: The residual biomasses of E. guineensis and Acrocomia sp. were assessed as sorbents for spilled fuels (diesel, jet fuel, commercial kerosene, and gasoline). Volumetric measurement of liquid-fuel absorption at 24 ºC was taken during a week. Desorption was measured at 50 ºC as the drying kinetics, by using moisture scales. Results: The sorption capacity of the Acrocomia sp. material was not satisfactory, compared to the E. guineensis residual material, due to differences in the residual architecture of the organic material. This last can absorb 2.4 ± 0.2 cm3 g-1 at 24 ºC, during a one-week period. Diatomite absorbs greater quantities of the organic liquids but, the fluids diffusion at 50 ºC is 0.26 ± 0.09 times more slowly in the mineral matrix, because of the greater pore tortuosity in this mineral matrix. Conclusions: The oil-palm empty fruit bunch of E. guineensis, showed lesser but adequate performance than the sorbing behavior for fire hazard mitigation of diatomite. The nutshell of macaw palm (Acrocomia sp.) did not prove to be useful for this recovery operation.

The present study investigates the potential for biosurfactant production of 19 marine yeast species obtained from zoanthids. Using the emulsification index test to screen the samples produced by the marine yeasts, we verified that five isolates exhibited an emulsification index ≥50%. Additional tests were performed on such isolates, including oil displacement, drop collapse, Parafilm M assay, and surface tension measurement. The tolerance of produced biosurfactants for environmental conditions was also analyzed, especially considering the media's temperature, pH, and salinity. Moreover, the surfactant's ability to emulsify different hydrocarbon sources and to metabolize kerosene as the sole carbon source was evaluated in vitro. Our results demonstrate that yeast biosurfactants can emulsify hydrocarbon sources under different physicochemical conditions and metabolize kerosene as a carbon source. Considering the Yarrowia lipolytica LMS 24B as the yeast model for biosurfactant production from the cell's wall biomass, emulsification indexes of 61.2% were obtained, even at a high temperature of 120 °C. Furthermore, the Fourier-transform middle infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis of the biosurfactant's chemical composition revealed the presence of distinct functional groups assigned to a glycoprotein complex. Considering the status of developing new bioproducts and bioprocesses nowadays, our findings bring a new perspective to biosurfactant production by marine yeasts, especially Y. lipolytica LMS 24B. In particular, the presented results validate the relevance of marine environments as valuable sources of genetic resources, i.e., yeast strains capable of metabolizing and emulsifying petroleum derivatives.

The process of washing and removing crude oil from spent catalysts is a serious issue in both catalyst regeneration and precious metals recovery. In this work, five different solvents with various polar and aromatic properties were chosen to evaluate their impact on the catalyst support structure and crude oil recovery from oil-contaminated spent catalysts. After the deoiling process, the spent catalyst was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, elemental analyzer, contact angle measurement, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, and Brunauer Emmet Teller (BET) method. Our findings demonstrate that p-xylene and kerosene are more effective in removing oil than other solvents. This is due to crude oil's similar polarity and molecular nature with kerosene and p-xylene. Considering the economical reason, kerosene is a better choice for deoiling spent catalyst compared to p-xylene as it is more affordable than p-xylene. XRD data show that the structure of the catalyst support was unaltered by the solvent treatment process, while BET data reveals that the surface area and pore volume are significantly enhanced after the deoiling process. These results imply that deoiling is a very crucial step for the recycling, regeneration, and reuse of spent catalysts. Our work is significant in developing sustainable approaches for managing spent catalysts, and minimizing waste and environmental pollution.

Worldwide, thermal burn is the leading etiological type of burn injury accounting for 86% of burn injuries requiring admissions. Flame, Scald, and contact burn are the leading causes of thermal burn. Changes in the sociodemographic characteristics of societies have led to alterations in the epidemiology of burn. An understanding of such changes in the epidemiology of burn is essential in formulating and executing adequate burn prevention programs. We sought to establish the current trend in the etiology, gender distribution, age, occurrence of inhalation injury, burn surface area, burn depth, and mortality rate of thermal burns at Ibadan. This was a retrospective study carried out between January 2013 and December 2022. Thermal burns constitute 92% of burn injuries. The male-to-female ratio was 1.4:1. There were 265 (45%) patients in the pediatric age group and 323 adults (55% of the patients). The proportion of flame, scald, and contact burns were 378 (58%), 203 (32%), and 14 (2%), respectively. Flame burns resulting from liquified petroleum gas (LPG) explosion show a rising trend, with a decline in flame burns from kerosene (P < .001). One hundred and ninety (32%) patients had inhalation injury. The overall mortality was 19% (N = 114). Kerosene flame, 38% (17 of 45 patients), and LPG, 32% (41 of 130 patients), were the most lethal causes of flame injuries (P < .043). The study shows the increasing contribution of LPG to the etiology of thermal burn injuries. Burn prevention programs should target safe use of LPG stoves and cylinders.

Currently, the bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons employs microbial biosurfactants because of their public acceptability, biological safety, and low cost. These organisms can degrade or detoxify organic-contaminated areas, such as marine ecosystems. The current study aimed to test the oil-biodegradation ability of the fungus Drechslera spicifera, which was isolated from contaminated soil samples in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We used hydrocarbon tolerance, scanning electron microscopy, DCPIP, drop-collapse, emulsification activity, recovery of biosurfactants, and germination assays to assess the biodegradation characteristics of the D. spicifera against kerosene, crude, diesel, used, and mixed oils. The results of DCPIP show that the highest oxidation (0.736 a.u.) was induced by crude oil on the 15th day. In contrast, kerosene and used oil had the highest measurements in emulsification activity and drop-collapse assays, respectively. Meanwhile, crude and used oils produced the highest amounts of biosurfactants through acid precipitation and solvent extraction assays. Furthermore, the biosurfactants stimulated the germination of tomato seeds by more than 50% compared to the control. These findings highlight the biodegradation ability of D. spicifera, which has been proven in the use of petroleum oils as the sole source of carbon. That might encourage further research to demonstrate its application in the cleaning of large, contaminated areas.

Charcoal is a popular form of biofuel embraced for domestic and industrial purposes. However, the use of Charcoal has some associated challenges, such as the required charcoal pot and setting it into the fire at first by using Charcoal-Ignition-Aiders (CIA) (e.g. discarded paper, nylon, rubber, plastics, petrol, the residue of processed palm oil, maise cob, wood, and kerosene). Coupled with the chemical properties of Charcoal, the resulting gases from CIA are capable of polluting the environment with perceived Adverse-Health-Implications (AHI) on the ecosystem. Therefore, this study conducted a safety assessment of charcoal biofuel usage and the effects of common CIA on combustion indices. This study followed standard methods and the use of peculiar equipment. This study established that Charcoal is commonly used in the studied area because it is cheap, readily available and requires less technical know-how. Considering the combustion indices, using paper as a CIA generated the lowest carbon monoxide (CO) value, 28.1 ppm, with 3,434.54 ppm volatile organic compound, VOC. Compared with the ACGIH standard permissible exposure level of ≤ 30 ppm, the paper gave a lesser CO value of 28.10 ppm among all the CIA. At the same time, all the CIA recorded higher VOC compared with EPA standard permissible exposure level of ≤ 15 ppm. ANOVA analysis conducted on the socio-demographic profile of the respondents, cooking attributes of the respondents, and use of charcoal pot types by the respondents in Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 3 gave p-values of 0.032, 0.028, and 0.039, respectively. These imply significant differences within the zones in each of the indices. The average energy content reported for charcoals sourced from oak trees, afara, obeche, mahogany, and iroko woods is 3,2149 kJ/kg compared to the lower ones. Therefore, this study recommended using these charcoals alongside discarded paper as CIA because they are a better combination to reduce AHI.

Burns, an endemic public health problem has had a dynamic epidemiology in India, in sync with economic and social changes. In the last decade a major shift of kitchen fuel usage from kerosene to the Liquefied Petroleum Gas has resulted in an increase in the incidence of burns from LPG mishaps. This prospective descriptive study conducted in a tertiary care burn centre in an urban area aims to determine the causes of LPG related burns, its injury profile, identify the population at risk and also to determine the level of knowledge of users regarding the safety issue with LPG usage. In the study LPG burns accounted for 52.3% of the admitted flame burns. On the whole there were 33 incidents of LPG mishaps involving multiple victims. Most common age group affected was 26-50 years. Leakage from larger cylinders was more common and malfunction of valve/regulator was the most common cause. Level of knowledge was dismally low across all socioeconomic strata. Our study highlights impact of changing socioeconomic pattern of the country on burns epidemiology and the glaring lack of public awareness regarding safe management principles.

Petroleum product fumes (PPFs) containing toxic organic components are pervasive in the environment, emanating from anthropogenic activities, including petroleum exploration and utilization by end-user activities from petrol-gasoline stations. Petrol station attendants are exposed to PPF through inhalation and dermal contact with consequent toxicological implications. We investigated the effects of chronic exposure (60 and 90 days) to petrol (P), kerosene (K) and diesel (D) alone and combined exposure to petrol, kerosene and diesel (PKD) fumes on hepatotoxicity, haematological function and oxidative stress in rats. Following sacrifice, we evaluated hepatic damage biomarkers, blood glucose, oxidative stress and haematological function. Chronic exposure to PPF significantly increased organo-somatic indices, blood glucose, biomarkers of hepatic toxicity and oxidative stress in an exposure duration-dependent manner. There was a simultaneous decrease in the protective capacity of antioxidants. Furthermore, exposure to PPF increased pro-inflammatory biomarkers in rats (90 > 60 days). Regardless of exposure duration, plateletcrit, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width and red cell distribution width in the coefficient of variation increased, whereas red blood cell count, haemoglobin, packed cell volume, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, white blood cell, lymphocyte, monocyte-basophil-eosinophil mixed counts and platelet count decreased after 60 and 90 days exposure. Microscopic examination of the liver demonstrated hepatic pathological changes paralleling the duration of exposure to PKD fumes. However, the injury observed was lesser to that of rats treated with the diethylnitrosamine - positive control. Our results expanded previous findings and further demonstrated the probable adverse effect on populations' health occasioned by persistent exposure to PPF. Individuals chronically exposed by occupation to PPF may be at greater risk of developing disorders promoted by continuous oxido-inflammatory perturbation and suboptimal haematological-immunologic function - thereby enabling a permissive environment for pathogenesis notwithstanding the limitation of quantifying PPF absolute values in our model system.

Volatile substance dependence is a relatively rare form of substance use disorders. It is predominantly noted in the adolescent age group. Higher prevalence is also seen in individuals from the lower socio-economic strata. These agents induce a rapid mood change by altering the levels of central neurotransmitters. Here we present a unique case of volatile substance dependence in a middle aged female with iron deficiency anemia. We managed this with the SSRIs and parenteral iron preparations which led to recovery. This emphasizes the fact that any treatment regimen must address all the factors, co-morbidities and patient characteristics for complete recovery.

HISTORY: We present the case of a 78-year old man, who developed aspiration pneumonia and consecutive sepsis after ingestion of a small amount of kerosene. FINDINGS AND DIAGNOSIS: Because unintentional ingestion was suspected first, diagnostic clarification of dementia was requested. Extensive exploration of the patient and third-party anamnesis excluded a psychiatric illness. Instead, a strong belief in alternative medical promises of healing was revealed as the true cause. THERAPY AND COURSE: Thus, psychiatric treatment was not neccessary, while physical condition improved after administration of antimicrobial substances. CONCLUSIONS: Psychiatric consultation may be helpful to diagnostically contextualize behaviour suggesting a mental illness.

OBJECTIVES: Hydrocarbons are a common cause of accidental poisoning in children, with kerosene being the most implicated agent in rural parts of India. However, lately, liquid mosquito repellent ingestion is emerging as an important cause of hydrocarbon (kerosene) poisoning in urban households. METHODS: This is a retrospective case series over a 5-y period (January 2013 - December 2017) of children with accidental liquid mosquito repellent ingestion presenting to the pediatric emergency. Epidemiology, clinical profile, management and outcomes are discussed. RESULTS: Twenty-three children with median (IQR) age of 24 (18.8-32) mo presented after mean (SD) interval of 6 (3) h from ingestion. Majority (20, 87%) were seen during summer months (March-June) and all were from urban background. Sixteen (70%) had mild-moderate acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) requiring supplemental oxygen with or without positive airway pressure for a mean (SD) duration of 3.3 (1.9) d. All except one survived. CONCLUSIONS: Children with accidental liquid mosquito repellent ingestion had predominant aspiration pneumonitis due to hydrocarbon content rather than neurological complications attributable to synthetic pyrethroids. Ensuring child-proof containers, appropriate storage, regulatory surveillance and parental awareness are must for prevention.

BACKGROUND: Household air pollution from combustion of solid fuels for cooking and space heating is one of the most important risk factors of the global burden of disease. This study was aimed to determine the association between household air pollution due to combustion of biomass fuel in Sri Lankan households and self-reported respiratory symptoms in children under 5 years. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in the Ragama Medical Officer of Health area in Sri Lanka. Children under 5 years were followed up for 12 months. Data on respiratory symptoms were extracted from a symptom diary. Socioeconomic data and the main fuel type used for cooking were recorded. Air quality measurements were taken during the preparation of the lunch meal over a 2-h period in a subsample of households. RESULTS: Two hundred and sixty two children were followed up. The incidence of infection induced asthma (RR = 1.77, 95%CI;1.098-2.949) was significantly higher among children resident in households using biomass fuel and kerosene (considered as the high exposure group) as compared to children resident in households using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or electricity for cooking (considered as the low exposure group), after adjusting for confounders. Maternal education was significantly associated with the incidence of infection induced asthma after controlling for other factors including exposure status. The incidence of asthma among male children was significantly higher than in female children (RR = 1.17; 95% CI 1.01-1.37). Having an industry causing air pollution near the home and cooking inside the living area were significant risk factors of rhinitis (RR = 1.39 and 2.67, respectively) while spending less time on cooking was a protective factor (RR = 0.81). Houses which used biomass fuel had significantly higher concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) (mean 2.77 ppm vs 1.44 ppm) and particulate matter2.5 (PM2.5) (mean 1.09 mg/m3 vs 0.30 mg/m3) as compared to houses using LPG or electricity for cooking. CONCLUSION: The CO and PM2.5 concentrations were significantly higher in households using biomass fuel for cooking. There was a 1.6 times higher risk of infection induced asthma (IIA) among children of the high exposure group as compared to children of the low exposure group, after controlling for other factors. Maternal education was significantly associated with the incidence of IIA after controlling for exposure status and other variables.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between occupational exposure to petroleum-based and oxygenated solvents and the risk of oral and oropharyngeal cancer. METHODS: The ICARE study is a large population-based case-control study conducted in France between 2001 and 2007. This present analysis was restricted to men and included 350 and 543 cases of squamous cell-carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx, respectively, and 2780 controls. Lifetime tobacco, alcohol consumption and complete occupational history were assessed through detailed questionnaires. Job-exposure matrices allowed us to assess occupational exposure to five petroleum-based solvents (white spirits; diesel/fuel oils/kerosene; gasoline; benzene; special petroleum products) and five oxygenated solvents (diethyl ether; tetrahydrofuran; ketones and esters; alcohols; ethylene glycol). Odds-ratios (ORs), adjusted for age, smoking, alcohol consumption and socioeconomic status, and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using unconditional logistic models. RESULTS: Associations between oral cancer risk and exposure to white spirits and diesel/fuel oils/kerosene were suggested, but there was no exposure-response trend. Concerning exposure to oxygenated solvents, participants with the highest levels of cumulative exposure to diethyl ether had a significant excess risk of oropharyngeal cancer (OR = 7.78, 95%CI 1.42 to 42.59; p for trend = 0.04). Ever exposure to tetrahydrofuran was associated with a borderline significant increased risk of oral cancer (OR = 1.87, 95%CI 0.97 to 3.61), but no exposure-response trend was observed. Additional adjustments for exposure to other solvents did not substantially change the results. CONCLUSION: Our results do not provide evidence for a major role of petroleum-based and oxygenated solvents in the occurrence of oral and oropharyngeal cancers in men.

Cooking with dirty-burning fuels is associated with health risk from household air pollution. We assessed the prevalence of and factors associated with the use of cooking fuels, and attitudes and barriers towards use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This was a cross-sectional, population-based survey conducted in 519 households in Lagos, Nigeria. We used a structured questionnaire to obtain information regarding choice of household cooking fuel and the attitudes towards the use of LPG. Kerosene was the most frequently used cooking fuel (n = 475, 91.5%; primary use n = 364, 70.1%) followed by charcoal (n = 159, 30.6%; primary use n = 88, 17%) and LPG (n = 86, 16.6%; primary use n = 63, 12.1%). Higher level of education, higher income and younger age were associated with LPG vs. kerosene use. Fuel expenditure on LPG was significantly lower than for kerosene ( N (Naira) 2169.0 ± 1507.0 vs. N 2581.6 ± 1407.5). Over 90% of non-LPG users were willing to switch to LPG but cited safety issues and high cost as potential barriers to switching. Our findings suggest that misinformation and beliefs regarding benefits, safety and cost of LPG are important barriers to LPG use. An educational intervention program could be a cost-effective approach to improve LPG adoption and should be formally addressed through a well-designed community-based intervention study.

The aim of this study was to investigate oil-degrading ability of newly isolated strain Rhodococcus Y2-2 at low temperature. Rhodococcus sp. Y2-2 was isolated from oil-contaminated soil sampled at the end of winter using a newly developed transwell plate method. In the liquid phase, the oil-degradation efficiency of strain Rhodococcus sp. Y2-2 was about 84% with an initial concentration of 1500 ppm TPH (500 ppm each of kerosene, gasoline, and diesel) when incubated for 2 weeks under optimal conditions: 10 °C, pH 7, and 0.5 g L- 1 inoculum. In the soil phase, the isolate showed 80% oil degradation efficiency using glucose as a carbon source, with an initial concentration of 4000 ppm TPH and the addition of water during 14 days of incubation at 10 °C. Additionally, the degradation efficiency of the isolate was increased by the addition of mixture of surfactant alpha olefin sulfonate and gelatin, although strain Y2-2 also produced many biosurfactant components. This study shows Rhodococcus sp. Y2-2 can degrade oil components both in liquid and soil media by consuming kerosene, gasoline, and diesel as a carbon and energy source. Therefore, the crude oil-degrading ability of Rhodococcus sp. Y2-2 at low temperature provides proper bioremediation tool to clean up oil-contaminated sites especially in cold area or during winter season.

Background: The use of cleaner fuel and improved stoves has been promoted as a means to lower harmful emissions from solid fuels. However, little is known about how exclusive use of cleaner fuels, mixed fuel use and improved stoves influences children's health. Methods: We compared the impact of using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exclusively with mixed fuel use (LPG plus polluting fuels) and with exclusive use of polluting fuels on acute respiratory infections (ARI) among 16 157 children 0-4 years of age from households in the 2012 Indian Human Development Survey. Inverse probability weighting (IPW) procedures for multiple treatments were used for this evaluation. Results: Children from households using LPG had a 5.0% lower probability of reporting ARI relative to exclusive users of polluting fuels, with larger effects (10.7%) in rural households. The probability of ARI in households using improved stoves and mixed fuel use was also lower in rural households, by 2.9% and 2.8%, respectively. The magnitude of effect varied across population subgroups, with the highest effects for children living in households living in kachha (low quality material) houses households identified as poor. Conclusion: Use of LPG and improved stoves lowered the probability of ARI among children younger than 5 years.

RESUMO

We report a case of a young man who allegedly consumed 100 mL of an indigenous pesticide which is used for the killing of rats in households in India. The constituents were azadirachtin oil (40%), tea oil (15%), pine oil (25%) and kerosene oil (20%). He presented to us with shortness of breath and altered sensorium and was found to have fMetHb (fraction of methaemoglobin) level of 80%, which has been postulated to have a fatal outcome. He responded to a low dose of methylene blue along with intravenous vitamin C and the level of fMetHb came down to 20% within 1 hour. His sensorium improved markedly with a decrease in fMetHb to non-toxic levels and he was discharged 5 days after admission. A literature review pertaining to these constituents individually or in combination causing methaemoglobinaemia is discussed in the context of this case.

This study describes a novel and efficient alasan-like bioemulsifier produced by Pseudomonas stutzeri NJtech 11-1, which was isolated from the Shengli Oilfield. The strain was found to produce a new and interesting emulsion stabilizer. The crude bioemulsifier showed super stability with 50% salinity and broad pH 3-10. The emulsion index (EI24) was increased to 100% after heating from 45 to 95 °C and the emulsion could be stable for at least 30 days. The yield of Ps-bioemulsifier (pure bioemulsifier) was 0.68 ± 0.05 mg mL-1. The Ps-bioemulsifier was composed of carbohydrates (80 ± 2.6%) and proteins (9.5 ± 0.5%). A low concentration (0.2 mg mL-1) of the Ps-bioemulsifier was obtained maximum emulsifying activity at pH 7.1 and its emulsifying activity strengthened by suitable salinity. Furthermore, Ps-bioemulsifier could also emulsify cyclohexane, hexadecane, kerosene, xylene hydrocarbons efficiently. Therefore, the Ps-bioemulsifier showed emulsifying characteristics which make it a good candidate for potential applications in bioremediation and microbial enhanced oil recovery.
