Clinical studies have demonstrated that maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases the offspring's risk of developing glucose intolerance. Our previous study reported that co-supplementation with zinc, selenium, and chromium improved insulin resistance in diet-induced GDM rats. Here, Transgenerational effects of supplementation with zinc (10 mg/kg.bw), selenium (20 µg/kg.bw), and chromium (20 µg/kg.bw) in F1 female offspring of both zinc, selenium and chromium (ZnSeCr)-treated, and untreated GDM rats daily by gavage from weaning to the postpartum were investigated in the present study. Glucose homeostasis in the F1 female offspring of GDM at different stages were evaluated. Maternal GDM did increase the birth mass of newborn F1 female offspring, as well as the serum glucose and insulin levels. Zinc, selenium and chromium supplementation attenuated the GDM-induced mass gain, increased serum glucose and insulin levels in the female neonates. The high fat and sucrose (HFS) diet-fed GDM-F1 offspring developed GDM, with glucose intolerance, hyperglycemia and insulin resistance during pregnancy. Moreover, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related protein levels were increased and the activation of insulin signaling pathways were reduced in the liver of HFS-fed GDM-F1 offspring. Whereas glucose homeostasis in parallel with insulin sensitivity was normalized in the female offspring of GDM by supplementation both F0 dams and F1 offspring with zinc, selenium and chromium, not in those either F0 or F1 elements supplemented offspring. Therefore, we speculate that zinc, selenium and chromium supplementation may have a potential beneficial transgenerational effect on the glucose homeostasis in the female offspring of GDM.

We investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with sodium butyrate (NaB) on the lipid levels, gene expression, and proteins related to lipid metabolism in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) rat models fed a high-sucrose diet for 3 weeks. Supplementation with 1% and 3% NaB reduced high-sucrose-induced hepatic triacylglycerol levels and expression of genes and proteins related to fatty acid synthesis, such as fatty acid synthase and malic enzyme, in a dose-dependent manner. NaB supplementation did not affect hepatic cholesterol levels or expression of genes related to ß-oxidation. NaB may prevent high-sucrose-induced NAFLD by repressing the fatty acid synthesis pathway.

SCOPE: The study tests the hypothesis that dietary pomegranate extract (PomX) supplementation attenuates colitis in a Western diet feed IL-10 deficient (IL-10-/-) murine model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four-week-old male IL-10-/- mice are randomly assigned to a high fat high sucrose (HFHS) diet or a HFHS diet supplement with 0.25% PomX for 8 weeks. PomX supplementation lead to significantly lower histological score for colitis (2.6 ± 0.5 vs 3.9 ± 1.0), lower spleen weight (0.11 ± 0.01 vs 0.15 ± 0.02), and lower circulating Interleukin 6(IL-6) levels (15.8±2.2 vs 29.5±5.5) compared with HFHS fed controls. RNAseq analysis of colonic tissues showed 483 downregulated and 263 upregulated genes with PomX supplementation, which are mainly associated with inflammatory responses, defenses, and neutrophil degranulation. In addition, PomX treatment affects the cecal microbiome with increased alpha diversity, altered microbial composition, and increased levels of the tryptophan-related microbial metabolite indole propionate. CONCLUSION: The data demonstrate that dietary PomX supplementation ameliorated colitis and lowered inflammatory markers in HFHS fed IL-10-/- mice. These data support the anti-inflammatory effects of dietary PomX supplementation for IBD and a potential mediating role of gut microbiome, suggesting the need for future clinical studies to explore the use of PomX dietary supplementation in IBD patients.

Drugs of abuse and highly palatable foods (e.g. high fat or sweet foods) have powerful reinforcing effects, which can lead to compulsive and addictive drives to ingest these substances to the point of psychopathology and self-harm--specifically the development of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and obesity. Both SUD and binge-like overeating can be defined as disorders in which the salience of the reward (food or drug) becomes exaggerated relative to, and at the expense of, other rewards that promote well-being. A major roadblock in the treatment of these disorders is high rates of relapse after periods of abstinence. It is common, although not universal, for cue-induced craving to increase over time with abstinence, often triggered by cues previously paired with the reinforcing substance. Accumulating evidence suggests that similar neural circuits and cellular mechanisms contribute to abstinence-induced and cue-triggered seeking of drugs and palatable food. Although much research has focused on the important role of corticolimbic circuitry in drug-seeking, our goal is to expand focus to the more recently explored hypothalamic-thalamic-striatal circuitry. Specifically, we review how connections, and neurotransmitters therein, among the lateral hypothalamus, paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus, and the nucleus accumbens contribute to abstinence-induced opioid- and (high fat or sweet) food-seeking. Given that biological sex and gonadal hormones have been implicated in addictive behavior across species, another layer to this review is to compare behaviors and neural circuit-based mechanisms of abstinence-induced opioid- or food-seeking between males and females when such data is available.

Nutrient excess increases skeletal muscle oxidant production and mitochondrial fragmentation that may result in impaired mitochondrial function, a hallmark of skeletal muscle insulin resistance. This led us to explore whether an endogenous gas molecule, carbon monoxide (CO), which is thought to prevent weight gain and metabolic dysfunction in mice consuming high-fat diets, alters mitochondrial morphology and respiration in C2C12 myoblasts exposed to high glucose (15.6 mM) and high fat (250 µM BSA-palmitate) (HGHF). Also, skeletal muscle mitochondrial morphology, distribution, respiration, and energy expenditure were examined in obese resistant (OR) and obese prone (OP) rats that consumed a high-fat and high-sucrose diet for 10 wk with or without intermittent low-dose inhaled CO and/or exercise training. In cells exposed to HGHF, superoxide production, mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), mitochondrial fission regulatory protein dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) and mitochondrial fragmentation increased, while mitochondrial respiratory capacity was reduced. CO decreased HGHF-induced superoxide production, Drp1 protein levels and mitochondrial fragmentation, maintained ΔΨm, and increased mitochondrial respiratory capacity. In comparison with lean OR rats, OP rats had smaller skeletal muscle mitochondria that contained disorganized cristae, a normal mitochondrial distribution, but reduced citrate synthase protein expression, normal respiratory responses, and a lower energy expenditure. The combination of inhaled CO and exercise produced the greatest effect on mitochondrial morphology, increasing ADP-stimulated respiration in the presence of pyruvate, and preventing a decline in resting energy expenditure. These data support a therapeutic role for CO and exercise in preserving mitochondrial morphology and respiration during metabolic overload.

INTRODUCTION: Control of hyperphosphatemia in patients on dialysis remains a major challenge. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated predictors of serum phosphorus (sP) control among dialysis patients treated with noncalcium, oral phosphate binder therapy in a phase 3 clinical trial. METHODS: Post hoc analyses were performed using data for patients with hyperphosphatemia who received 52 weeks of treatment with sucroferric oxyhydroxide (SFOH) or sevelamer carbonate (sevelamer). Patients were categorized into those who achieved sP control (n = 302; defined as sP ≤ 5.5 mg/dL at week 52), and those with uncontrolled sP (n = 195; sP >5.5 mg/dL at week 52). Because SFOH and sevelamer have previously demonstrated similar effects on chronic kidney disease-mineral-bone disorder parameters in this study, the treatment groups were pooled. RESULTS: Average age at baseline was higher among sP-controlled versus sP-uncontrolled patients (56.9 vs. 53.4 years; p = 0.005). Baseline sP levels were significantly lower among sP-controlled versus sP-uncontrolled patients (7.30 vs. 7.85 mg/dL; p < 0.001), and sP reductions from baseline were significantly greater in the sP-controlled group (-2.89 vs. -0.99 mg/dL at week 52; p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis identified higher baseline sP levels (odds ratio [OR] = 0.86, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.765-0.960), no concomitant active vitamin D therapy use (OR = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.328-0.804), and higher body mass index at baseline (OR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.937-0.992) as significant predictors of uncontrolled sP. CONCLUSION: This analysis indicates that sP control may be more challenging in younger patients with high sP levels. Closer monitoring and management of serum phosphorus levels may be required in this population.

INTRODUCTION: The lack of adherence to phosphate -binders (PB) is the most important factor in not achieving the objectives of serum phosphorus (sP). Studies in the real-world population are needed to understand the influence of PBs on adherence and how to modify it. METHODS: Prospective study conducted during 3 months in usual clinical practice. Out of 105 hemodialysis patients, 57 were switched to SFOH and 48 maintained their baseline treatment (control group). sP levels and the percentage of patients with sP levels <5mg/dl were compared. Adherence before and after introduction of SFOH, number of pills of PB, preferences in the administration mode and side effects were analyzed. RESULTS: The percentage of patients with controlled sP (<5mg/dl) increased significantly in the SFOH users' group (62.1-92.9%, p<0.001), but not in the control group (83-83.3%, p=NS). The average of daily tablets decreased significantly in the SFOH group (7.2-2.3 comp, p<0.001), but not in the control group (5.6-5.6, p=NS) and 100% of the patients used only one PB in SFOH group. The use of SFOH increased the adherence according to the SMAQ questionnaire (57.8-84.3%; OR 13.1, p<0.001). The possibility to choose the preferred mode of administration (split-swallowing 89% compared to chewing 11%), improved the acceptance (44.7-78%). 14% of the patients experienced side effects and in 5.2% SFOH was discontinued for this reason. CONCLUSIONS: SFOH controlled serum sP in 93% of patients, 100% in monotherapy, and with fewer tablets. The exploration and adaptation of preferences in the mode of administration influenced the acceptance of the drug by the patient and, probably, the future adherence.

High-fat and high-sugar diets contribute to the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although the impact of high-fat diets on AD pathogenesis has been established, the effect of high-sucrose diets (HSDs) on AD pathogenesis remains unclear. This study sought to determine the impact of HSDs on AD-related pathologies. Male APPswe/PS1dE9 (APP/PS1) transgenic and wild-type mice were provided with HSD and their cognitive and hypothalamus-related noncognitive parameters, including feeding behaviors and glycemic regulation, were compared. HSD-fed APP/PS1 mice showed increased neuroinflammation, as well as increased cortical and serum levels of amyloid-ß. HSD-fed APP/PS1 mice showed aggravated obesity, hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, and leptin resistance, but there was no induction of hyperphagia or hyperleptinemia. Leptin-induced phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 in the dorsomedial and ventromedial hypothalamus was reduced in HSD-fed APP/PS1 mice, which might be associated with attenuated food-anticipatory activity, glycemic dysregulation, and AD-related noncognitive symptoms. Our study demonstrates that HSD aggravates metabolic stresses, increases AD-related pathologies, and attenuates hypothalamic leptin signaling in APP/PS1 mice.

Using a silkworm evaluation system, we previously evaluated various substances that suppress postprandial hyperglycemia. Enterococcus faecalis YM0831, a lactic acid bacterium that inhibits glucose uptake by the human intestinal Caco-2 cell line, exhibited hyperglycemia-suppressing effects in the silkworm system. In the present study, we found that Kothala himbutu (Salacia reticulata) extract, a traditional medicine containing α-glucosidase inhibitors, suppressed sucrose-induced hyperglycemia in the silkworm system. Moreover, combined oral administration of lactic acid bacteria YM0831 with Kothala himbutu extract had stronger suppressive effects on sucrose-induced hyperglycemia than single administration of either component. These findings suggest that the silkworm system provides a simple way to evaluate the effects of supplements on the suppression of blood glucose level induced by sucrose ingestion.

As yet, there was no effective pharmacological therapy approved for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Here, we aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of puerarin against NAFLD and explored the underlying mechanisms. C57BL/6J mice were fed with a high-fat high-sucrose (HFHS) diet with or without puerarin coadministration intragastrically. The levels of hepatocellular injury, steatosis, fibrosis, and mitochondrial and metabolism alteration were detected. First, puerarin ameliorated histopathologic abnormalities due to HFHS. We observed a marked increase in hepatic lipid content, inflammation, and fibrosis level, which were attenuated by puerarin. Possible mechanisms were related to puerarin-mediated activation of PI3K/AKT pathway and further improvement in fatty acid metabolism. Puerarin restored the NAD+ content and beneficially affected the hepatic mitochondrial function, which attenuated HFHS-induced steatosis and metabolic disturbances. Finally, hepatic PARP-1 was activated due to excessive fat intake. Puerarin attenuated the PARP-1 expression in HFHS-fed mice, and PJ34, the PARP inhibitor, could mimic these protections of puerarin. However, pharmacological inhibition of PI3K disabled the protection of puerarin or PJ34 toward NAD+ refilling and mitochondrial homeostasis. In conclusion, our findings indicated that puerarin could be a promising and practical therapeutic strategy in NAFLD through modulating PARP-1/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and further facilitating mitochondrial function.

Aging and lifestyle factors, including high-sugar and high-fat diets, promote a systemic metabolic imbalance that promotes neurodegeneration. Hericium erinaceus has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine. Recently, its functional activities, such as antimetabolic dysfunction, antineuroinflammatory activities, and stimulation of nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis, have been revealed. This study demonstrated that Hericium erinaceus mycelium (HEM) and an isolated diterpenoid derivative, erinacine A (EA), may reverse spatial learning disabilities in aging mice (15 months old) fed with a high-fat and high-sucrose diet (HFSD). Aging mice were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: (1) a chow diet (control), (2) an HFSD, and an HFSD supplemented with either (3) HEM or (4) EA for 18 weeks. The Morris water maze (MWM) and Y-maze were used for behavioral assessments. Both HEM- and EA-treated mice had shorter mean daily escape latencies than HFSD-treated mice in the MWM. In addition, HEM-treated mice had a slightly increased exploratory time and frequency in the novel arm in the Y-maze. Quantitative PCR revealed that both HEM- and EA-treated mice exhibited reduced messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1ß, and HEM-treated mice exhibited increased mRNA expression of NGF and NeuN in the hippocampus. Moreover, HEM and EA also decreased body weight, abdominal fat, plasma glucose, serum and liver total cholesterol, and liver triacylglycerol. Thus, HEM may be a potential health-promoting supplement for minimizing the progression of aging and obesity-induced neurodegeneration by reducing metabolic abnormalities and neuroinflammatory cytokines and increasing neurogenesis factors.

Blueberry leaf is currently a popular dietary supplement. Effects of dietary blueberry leaf and its active components on body fat accumulation were examined. C57BL/6J mice were fed high-fat, high-sucrose diet with or without 3% blueberry leaf extract (BLEx) or 3% concentrated-polyphenolic BLEx (CP BLEx) for 8 weeks. Compared to mice fed a high-fat, high-sucrose diet without blueberry leaf, BLEx and CP BLEx significantly reduced body weight and adipose tissue weight gain. Adipocytes were also smaller and and liver lipid accumulatioin was significantly inhibited in mice fed either BLEx or CP BLEx. These effects tended to be more pronounced in mice fed CP BLEx compared to in mice fed BLEx. Together, results suggest that blueberry leaf inhibits body fat accumulation typically observed in mice fed a high-fat, high-sucrose diet, and that inhibition is attributable to polyphenolic components in leaf extracts.

Obesity induced by overfeeding ultimately can lead to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, whereas dietary fiber consumption is known to have a beneficial effect. We aimed to determine if a supplementation of a mix of fibers (inulin, resistant starch and pectin) could limit or alleviate overfeeding-induced metabolic perturbations. Twenty female minipigs were fed with a control diet (C) or an enriched fat/sucrose diet supplemented (O + F) or not (O) with fibers. Between 0 and 56 days of overfeeding, insulin (+88%), HOMA (+102%), cholesterol (+45%) and lactate (+63%) were increased, without any beneficial effect of fibers supplementation. However, fibers supplementation limited body weight gain (vs. O, -15% at D56) and the accumulation of hepatic lipids droplets induced by overfeeding. This could be explained by a decreased lipids transport potential (-50% FABP1 mRNA, O + F vs. O) inducing a down-regulation of regulatory elements of lipids metabolism / lipogenesis (-36% SREBP1c mRNA, O + F vs. O) but not to an increased oxidation (O + F not different from O and C for proteins and mRNA measured). Glucose metabolism was also differentially regulated by fibers supplementation, with an increased net hepatic release of glucose in the fasted state (diet × time effect, P<.05 at D56) that can be explained partially by a possible increased glycogen synthesis in the fed state (+82% GYS2 protein, O + F vs. O, P=.09). The direct role of short chain fatty acids on gluconeogenesis stimulation is questioned, with probably a short-term impact (D14) but no effect on a long-term (D56) basis.

Obesity is a major problem in developed countries and a burden on social health care systems. Several epidemiological studies showed the protective effects of green tea against obesity-related diseases. Cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) acts as a mediator for the physiological effects of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate, the major constituent of green tea. Here, we showed that the level of phosphodiesterase 5, a negative regulator of cGMP, was up-regulated in adipose tissues of high-fat/high-sucrose (HF/HS) diet-fed mice and that this up-regulation was ameliorated by diallyl disulfide (DADS), the major organosulfur in garlic. A green tea extract (GT) and DADS in combination attenuated HF/HS diet-induced adipose increase and triglyceride accumulation in the liver. In these mechanisms, the combination regimen suppressed the HF/HS diet-induced up-regulation of fatty acid synthesis-related enzymes including sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1), fatty acid synthase, and stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1. Moreover, this combination diet up-regulated thermogenesis-related genes including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) gamma coactivator 1 alpha and uncoupling proteins in both white and brown adipose tissues. In conclusion, we identified DADS as an enhancer of the anti-obesity effect of GT accompanied by the suppression of SREBP-1 and activation of PPAR axis. The combination diet is a novel and easily applicable approach against obesity-related diseases.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cariogenicity of a milk-based drink intended for older adults that was used as part of a governmental initiative in Chile to improve their nutritional conditions. This drink contains a high concentration of sugars, which can contribute to root caries development. To test this hypothesis, an experimental biofilm/caries model was used. Dentin slabs were used to grow biofilms of Streptococcus mutans UA159. Slabs/biofilms were exposed 3× per day to bovine milk with different fat content, the milk-based drink, and the milk-based drink supplemented with 10 g of sucrose added per serving. Slabs exposed to 10% sucrose or 0.9% NaCl were used as positive and negative controls, respectively. Biofilms were analyzed for bacterial counts and acidogenicity. Dentin demineralization was estimated by the loss of surface microhardness and integrated mineral loss. Results were compared by analysis of variance and Tukey's test. The milk-based drink showed higher acidogenicity than milk with its entire (whole) or reduced total fat content (skim). The milk-based drink supplemented with -sucrose had similar acidogenicity as the 10% sucrose positive control (p = 0.506). Whole milk exposure elicited lower bacterial counts than the positive control, the milk-based drink, and the milk-based drink supplemented with sucrose (p = 0.002; 0.006 and 0.014 respectively). Although skim milk induced higher demineralization than whole milk, both milk types produced lower demineralization than the milk-based drink. Regarding integrated mineral loss, demineralization induced by the milk-based drink and the milk-based drink supplemented with sucrose was similar to that induced by the positive control and skim milk (p > 0.05). Sugar-containing milk-based drinks used as dietary supplements for older adults may be highly cariogenic and could represent a potential risk for root caries.

This study investigated the effect of human milk, alone and associated with sucrose, in the cariogenicity of biofilms in a microcosm biofilm model and compared with the cariogenicity of sucrose and bovine milk. Microcosm biofilms were grown in enamel discs in 24-well plates. Six growth conditions were studied: DMM (chemically defined artificial saliva - negative control), DMM with 1% of sucrose (DMM+s) (positive control), human milk with DMM, human milk with DMM+s, bovine milk with DMM, and bovine milk with DMM+s. After 5 days, the outcome variables surface hardness change (%SHC), microbiological composition of biofilms, and pH of supernatant were analyzed. All groups had significantly lower hardness loss compared to the DMM group with 1% of sucrose. Human and bovine milk associated with sucrose showed higher hardness loss. The supernatant pH values after 6 hours of different treatments were similar for the groups sucrose and human milk associated with sucrose (p>0.05). After 18 hours at rest in pure DMM, an increase in the pH of the supernatant was observed. Higher values of total microorganisms count were found for sucrose and bovine milk groups compared to the group supplemented only by DMM. Bovine milk group showed greater amount of total aciduric microorganisms in comparison to human milk group. Within the limits of this study, it can be infered that both human and cow milks have some cariogenic potential, although differing from sucrose in terms of mineral loss.

Several studies have evidenced the association between high serum phosphorus concentrations and adverse events especially in patients on dialysis. Recent K-DIGO guidelines suggest lowering elevated phosphate levels toward the normal range. This goal should be achieved by combining dietary counseling, optimizing dialysis procedures and prescribing phosphate binders. Despite the availability of several binders, the "ideal" phosphate binder that combines high efficacy, low pills burden, minimal side effects and low cost is still not available. In clinical practice it is crucial to reach a high patient's compliance to therapy. The pill burden is the most relevant factor contributing to low compliance. This is the case of phosphate binder therapy that represents almost 50% of total pills prescribed to patients on dialysis. It has been evidenced an association between pills of phosphate binder and poor control of phosphorus and PTH. In recent years sucroferric oxyhydroxide is available as a new phosphate binder. Its peculiarity is an high phosphate binding capability that requires prescription of low number of pills per day. This characteristic has been confirmed by several randomized controlled trials. These trials have also evidenced that sucroferric oxyhydroxide may cause some gastrointestinal side effects. There is an ongoing study to confirm in "the real world" the incidence of side effects reported by controlled trials.

Noncaloric sweeteners (NCS) are food additives used to provide sweetness without adding calories. Their consumption has become more widespread around the world in all age groups, including children. The aim of this study is to show the state of the art about the intake of noncaloric sweeteners in children, as well as their benefits and consumption risk. Scientific searchers were used (PUBMED, Scopus, and Scielo) to analyze articles that included keywords (noncaloric sweeteners/saccharin/cyclamate/acesulfame potassium/aspartame/sucralose/stevia/children) in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Authors conclude that it is imperative that health professionals judiciously and individually evaluate the overall benefits and risks of NCS use in consumers before recommending their use. Different subgroups of the population incorporate products containing NCS in their diet with different objectives, which should be considered when recommending a diet plan for the consumer. In childhood, in earlier age groups, this type of additives should be used as a dietary alternative when other forms of prevention in obesity are not sufficient.

BACKGROUND: It has been demonstrated in animal studies that both polyphenol-rich pomegranate extract (PomX) and the polysaccharide inulin, ameliorate metabolic changes induced by a high-fat diet, but little is known about the specific mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effect of PomX (0.25%) and inulin (9%) alone or in combination on cholesterol and lipid metabolism in mice. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 J mice were fed high-fat/high-sucrose [HF/HS (32% energy from fat, 25% energy from sucrose)] diets supplemented with PomX (0.25%) and inulin (9%) alone or in combination for 4 weeks. At the end of intervention, serum and hepatic cholesterol, triglyceride levels, hepatic gene expression of key regulators of cholesterol and lipid metabolism as well as fecal cholesterol and bile acid excretion were determined. RESULTS: Dietary supplementation of the HF/HS diet with PomX and inulin decreased hepatic and serum total cholesterol. Supplementation with PomX and inulin together resulted in lower hepatic and serum total cholesterol compared to individual treatments. Compared to HF/HS control, PomX increased gene expression of Cyp7a1 and Cyp7b1, key regulators of bile acid synthesis pathways. Inulin decreased gene expression of key regulators of cholesterol de novo synthesis Srebf2 and Hmgcr and significantly increased fecal elimination of total bile acids and neutral sterols. Only PomX in combination with inulin reduced liver and lipid weight significantly compared to the HF/HS control group. PomX showed a trend to decrease liver triglyceride (TG) levels, while inulin or PomX-inulin combination had no effect on either serum or liver TG levels. CONCLUSION: Dietary PomX and inulin supplementation decreased hepatic and serum total cholesterol by different mechanisms and the combination leading to a significant enhancement of the cholesterol-lowering effect.
