OBJECTIVE: Colour stability is important in the long-term aesthetic success of restorative materials and is affected by both internal and external factors. Internal discolourations are due to the properties of the restorative materials. External discolourations can be associated with frequent consumption of food and beverages and the use of suspensions or syrups containing colourants/additives. Fluoride varnish application has an important place in preventive dentistry. The purpose of the research was to examine the protective effect of fluoride varnish application on the colour change on polyacid-modified composite resin restorative materials caused by the use of various paediatric drugs. METHODS: Two hundred ten discs were prepared from polyacid-modified composite resin material and divided into two groups: flouride varnish was applied to one group and flouride varnish was not applied to the other group. The groups were further divided into seven subgroups and the samples were kept in artificial saliva, amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, cefuroxime axetil, clarithromycin, paracetamol, ibuprofen, and iron supplement drug solutions. The colour change values of the discs were measured using a spectrophotometer device before immersion in the drug solutions and on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th days after the immersion. The obtained data were calculated and statistically evaluated using IBM SPSS V23 software. RESULTS: It was found that the application of fluoride varnish in the iron supplement drug group prevented the colour change of the polyacid-modified composite resins for 28 days. In the amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, cefuroxime axetil, and paracetamol groups, the fluoride varnish did not prevent colour change in the polyacid-modified composite resin restorative materials at the end of the 14th day. CONCLUSION: It is thought that fluoride varnish application may be beneficial as a preservative in the colour change of polyacid-modified composite resins due to the use of various paediatric drugs, and this protective feature may be effective for a specific period of time.

OBJECTIVE: The study objectives were to examine the physical properties and enamel remineralization potential of fluoride (F) varnishes incorporated with arginine (Arg). METHODS: Four commercial F varnishes: 1) Duraphat®; 2) Flúor Protector®, 3) Fluor Protector S®, and 4) Fluorimax™ were supplemented with 2% w/v. Arg. The control/experimental varnishes underwent rheometric analysis to assess varnish density (δ), velocity (ν), and associated viscosity, both quantitatively (ν/δ) and qualitatively based on determined mass, volume, distance flow, and time under experimentation. The varnish wet/dry weights (at 2 h) were also analysed. Further, sound enamel specimens (T0) with artificial incipient caries-like lesions (T1) were treated with control/experimental varnishes and subjected to remineralization assay with artificial saliva for 6 h. Thereafter (T2), the specimens were characterized to estimate precipitated Ca and net enamel F uptake. Additionally, mineral density (MD) was assessed using micro-CT at T0, T1, and T2 to derive mineral gain (MG) and % remineralization for the treatment groups. RESULTS: When Arg is incorporated, the physical properties of the F-containing varnishes undergo a significant transformation, resulting in higher density, varnish weight, dry varnish weight, and viscosity compared to their respective control varnishes (p < 0.05). Incorporating Arg-in Duraphat®, Fluor Protector S®, and Fluorimax™ significantly improved both enamel Ca precipitation and F uptake compared to the respective controls (p < 0.05). Additionally, the enamel F uptake was significantly higher with all the tested varnishes when enriched with Arg (p < 0.05). The combined data for MD, MG, and % remineralization suggests that the remineralization potential of F-varnishes significantly increased when enriched with Arg (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Incorporating Arg in inorganic F varnishes improves their physical properties and enhances the enamel remineralization potential of the varnishes. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study highlights the possibility of incorporating Arg in distinct F-source varnishes. The synergism between active components (Arg-F) aids in enhanced remineralization and superior varnish physical properties, demonstrating a promising approach for high caries-risk patients.

AIM: This study aims to incorporate alginate microparticles containing berberine and fluconazole into two different types of pharmaceutical formulations, to subsequently evaluate the antifungal activity against Candida albicans. METHODS AND RESULTS: Alginate microparticles containing BBR (berberine) and FLU (fluconazole) were produced by the spray-drying technique, characterized and incorporated in two pharmaceutical formulations, a vaginal cream and artificial saliva. Broth microdilution, checkerboard, time-kill curve, and scanning electron microscopy were carried out to determine the antifungal effects of BBR and FLU against C. albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) values of free BBR were 125 µg ml-1. Synergism between BBR and FLU was demonstrated by a fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) = 0.0762. The time-kill curve for the combination BBR + FLU showed a more pronounced decrease in fungal growth in comparison to free drugs, and an antibiofilm effect of BBR occurred in the formation and preformed biofilm. CONCLUSION: Alginate microparticles containing BBR and FLU were obtained and incorporated in a vaginal cream and artificial saliva. Both formulations showed good stability, antifungal effects, and organoleptic characteristics, which suggest that BBR-FLU microparticles in formulations have potential as antifungal therapy.

BACKGROUND: Lactoferrin, a glycoprotein naturally found in breast milk, is known for its bactericidal and antiviral properties, as well as its capacity to modulate the immune system; therefore, pediatricians routinely recommend it as dietary support. The objective of this study was to determine how lactoferrin oral suspension could affect the enamel surface characteristics of primary and permanent teeth. METHODS: This research was conducted on 40 unidentified extracted teeth, including primary and permanent teeth. Experimental teeth were free of cracks or enamel defects, as confirmed by careful examination using a dental operating microscope. The crowns were bisected into 80 specimens and assorted into two groups based on the type of dentition. Group DM included 40 specimens of second deciduous molars, while Group PM contained 40 samples of first premolars. Each of the DM and PM specimens was subsequently split based on the type of dispersion medium into two subgroups: a control subgroup (artificial saliva) and a test subgroup (lactoferrin suspension). The specimens were immersed in lactoferrin suspension for two minutes, then kept in artificial saliva for the rest of the 24 h for 30 successive days. This is a pioneering study about the effect of orally supplemented lactoferrin on teeth; therefore, we examined enamel hardness, ultra-morphology, and mineral contents. RESULTS: Our findings indicated a highly significant decrease (p < 0.01) in the microhardness of the lactoferrin subgroup in Group DM (second deciduous molars) and a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in the microhardness of the lactoferrin subgroup in Group PM (premolars). Calcium weight% was not statistically different (p > 0.05) compared with a significant decline (p < 0.05) in phosphorus weight% in lactoferrin subgroups in both DM and PM groups. The enamel surface of lactoferrin subgroups in both DM and PM groups was demineralized and porous, with the enamel of deciduous teeth being more affected by lactoferrin than permanent teeth. CONCLUSION: Lactoferrin suspension decreased the microhardness of enamel and both calcium and phosphorus weight percentages. Both dentitions exhibited erosions in the enamel surface, with primary teeth being more affected than the permanent teeth.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of the supplementation of energy drinks with green tea extract on abrasive and erosive dentin wear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six groups, each comprising 15 bovine dentin samples, were prepared, yielding a total of 90 samples. Erosion was performed by immersing the samples in Red Bull and Red Bull light with and without green tea extract. Tap water with and without green tea extract was used as the control groups. The samples were subjected to abrasive/erosive cycling for five days. The following cycling was performed daily: toothbrush abrasion (20 brushstrokes; 2.5 N); eight erosive cycles (2 min storage in the respective solutions); in between the erosive cycles, storage in artificial saliva (60 min) and again toothbrush abrasion (20 brushstrokes; 2.5 N). During the night, samples were again stored in artificial saliva. Abrasive/erosive dentin wear was measured using a stylus profilometer (µm, accuracy = 40 nm). The measured dentin loss results from the vertical position shift on the y-axis from base to final profile after the wear process in 2D. Pairwise comparisons between the groups were carried out using Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS: The following dentin wear (median [IQR]) was measured: Red Bull: 1.9 µm (0.5); Red Bull Light: 1.3 µm (0.3); Red Bull with green tea extract: 0.8 µm (0.3); Red Bull Light with green tea extract: 0.3 µm (0.5); Tap water with green tea extract: -0.2 µm (0.7); Tap water: -1.0 µm (1.2). The comparison of all tested groups to each other proved to be statistically significant (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The supplementation of energy drinks with green tea extract provide a protective effect against erosive/abrasive wear in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Elastomeric chains promote controlled movements and are widely used in orthodontics. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the force decay and elongation of orthodontic chains exposed to low-pH saliva (pH = 4) and different beverages common in the diet. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Force decay and elongation were determined in vitro at 6 time intervals over 21 days for 2 commercial elastomeric chains - Ormco (group A) and Borgatta (group B). The samples were immersed in artificial saliva (AS) at pH 4, Coca-Cola®, coffee, or beer for 15 min every day, or in AS (the control group). For the remaining time, the chains were placed into AS at 37°C. In addition, microscopic qualitative changes were recorded by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS: The group B chains showed higher force decay and elongation at the end of the follow-up as compared to the group A chains. Exposure to beer had a greater impact on the force decay and elongation of the chains as compared to other liquids, but it was not statistically significant. The group A chains showed a more irregular surface than the group B chains, in particular, those exposed to coffee. CONCLUSIONS: Elastomeric chains suffer force decay and elongation as a function of time, mainly in the first 24 h. At the end of the follow-up, the group A chains exhibited less force decay in comparison with the group B chains. The qualitative observations showed that the chains in group A had a more irregular surface than the chains in group B.

To evaluate the applicability of photobiomodulation therapy (PBM-T) in the management of xerostomia and OM. Fifty-three patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma were randomized into two groups: Sham and PBM-T. The Sham group received artificial saliva and laser simulation, while the PBM-T group received artificial saliva and PBM-T. Xerostomia-related quality of life (QoL), the presence or absence of OM lesions, the decayed-missing-filled teeth (DMFT) index, and periodontal charts were evaluated. The results of the QoL questionnaire, DMFT index, and periodontal chart were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls test, while OM findings were compared using the Mann-Whitney test. QoL scores significantly increased in the Sham group (p < 0.0001), denoting more severe xerostomia symptoms (p = 0.0074), and decreased in the PBM-T group, indicating no or very mild xerostomia. Higher grades of OM were found in the Sham group than the PBM-T group (p = 0.0001). There was no significant difference in DMFT index or periodontal charts between the groups (p > 0.05). PBM-T improved QoL in patients with head and neck cancer treated with radiotherapy, whether as radiation alone or as an adjunct to chemotherapy and surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of activated charcoal toothpaste on the color stability of teeth subjected to tooth bleaching and pigmenting agents. METHODS: A total of 120 bovine crowns were randomly divided into 12 groups (n=10) according to two study factors: staining solutions (three levels): saliva (control), coffee, and red wine; and toothpaste (four levels): BPC, Bianco Pro Clinical (Bianco Oral Care) (Control); BIW, Black is White (Curaprox); BCA, Bianco Carbon (Bianco Oral Care); and NAT, Natural Suavetex (Suavetex). The samples were subjected to office bleaching with a 35% hydrogen peroxide-based gel (Whiteness HP Blue, FGM), followed by immersion in the solution for 45 minutes per day and daily toothbrushing for 7 days. The color (ΔE) and luminosity changes (ΔL*) were measured using reflectance spectroscopy (Vita EasyShade). The CIE values (L*, a*, b*) were measured at baseline after bleaching (T0) and immediately after immersion in solution each day (Ti1-Ti7) and after all toothbrushing cycles (Tb1-Tb7). ΔE and ΔL were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α=0.05). The clinically unacceptable level of ΔE > 3.3 was used to evaluate the color change. RESULTS: The color change was significantly influenced by the staining solutions and toothpastes (p<0.001). The color change (ΔE) was significantly higher when immersed in wine than in coffee, and lower ΔE values were observed for artificial saliva (control), irrespective of the toothpaste used. In artificial saliva, BPC, BIW, and BCA resulted in significantly lower ΔE values than NAT, which presented a clinically unacceptable level of dental color change (ΔE>3.3). Coffee resulted in a lower (L*) reduction than wine, irrespective of the toothpaste used. CONCLUSION: Charcoal toothpastes resulted in a color change on the surface of the tooth enamel (ΔE). The bleaching effect of the charcoal toothpastes and control evaluated in this study partially reduced the color changes on the surface of the tooth enamel caused by staining solutions but was unable to reestablish the measured values to the baseline. For teeth immersed in artificial saliva, the color change was not noticeable in BCA, BIW, and control-BPC (ΔE≥3.3), except for NAT, which showed a significant color change.

BACKGROUND: White spot lesions (WSLs) remain one of the most critical adverse sequelae of fixed orthodontic treatment, despite materials and techniques advances in orthodontics. WSLs seem to be a multi-factorial interaction including increased microbial plaque due to intrabuccal appliances that limit the oral-cleansing mechanism and change in the oral microbiome during fixed appliance wear. The aim of this study was to investigate the synergistic effect of propolis quantum dots (PQD), nisin (Nis), and quercetin nanoparticles (nQCT)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PQD-Nis-nQCT-mediated aPDT) in the eradication of Streptococcus mutans biofilms and the remineralization of WSLs ex-vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cytotoxicity of PQD-Nis-nQCT composite on human gingival fibroblasts was evaluated using neutral red. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation following PQD-Nis-nQCT-mediated aPDT was measured. Enamel slabs were prepared and demineralized using a demineralization solution containing S. mutans. Demineralized enamel slabs were divided into 9 groups (n = 10) and treated in the following groups: 1) Artificial saliva (negative control), 2) 2% neutral sodium fluoride gel (NSF; positive control or treatment control, 3) PQD, 4) Nis, 5) nQCT, 6) Nis-nQCT, 7) PQD-Nis-nQCT 8) Blue laser irradiation (light), 9) PQD-Nis-nQCT with irradiation (PQD-Nis-nQCT-mediated aPDT). Then, the surface changes, microhardness, and surface topography of the demineralized slabs were examined following each treatment using DIAGNOdent Pen reading, digital hardness tester, and SEM, respectively. After the determination of minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) of PQD, Nis, and nQCT by microtiter plate assay, the synergistic antimicrobial effects of PQD and Nis-nQCT were determined via evaluation of fractional biofilm eradication concentration (FBEC) index. The anti-biofilm effects of each treatment on S. mutans were assessed using a colorimetric assay. The virulence­associated gtfB gene expression was assessed following PQD-Nis-nQCT-mediated aPDT by quantitative real­time PCR. RESULTS: PQD-Nis-nQCT at 2048 µg/mL had no significant cell cytotoxicity on human gingival fibroblasts compared to the control group (P > 0.05). A significantly increased (7.6 fold) in intracellular ROS was observed following PQD-Nis-nQCT-mediated aPDT (13.9 ± 1.41) when compared to the control (1.83 ± 0.13). Following each treatment, the microhardness of the demineralized enamel surface significantly increased except for the artificial saliva (negative) and blue laser irradiation groups. The highest change in microhardness improvement was detected in the PQD-Nis-nQCT-mediated aPDT group (P < 0.05). Also, DIAGNODent Pen reading revealed the highest significant improved change in the level of mineralization degree in the PQD-Nis-nQCT-mediated aPDT group. Nis and blue light irradiation groups, like the artificial saliva-treated demineralized enamel slabs (control group), did not lead to remineralization (P > 0.05). Also, the PQD-Nis-nQCT-mediated aPDT treatment results obtained from SEM revealed that remineralization of demineralized enamel slabs in that group has significantly improved compared to the others. Light-activated nQCT, PQD, Nis-nQCT, and PQD-Nis-nQCT composite significantly reduced pre-formed biofilms of S. mutans compared with unactivated forms of test materials. The relative expression level of the virulence gtfB gene was significantly decreased (7.53-fold) in the presence of PQD-Nis-nQCT-mediated aPDT (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: PQD-Nis-nQCT-mediated aPDT can be used for the eradication of S. mutans biofilms and remineralization of WSLs. The found in vitro efficacy should be tested further through clinical studies.

BACKGROUND: The blending ability of universal shade composites and their stability in the oral environment are of great concern in restoring anterior teeth. This study aims to evaluate and compare the color stability and surface roughness of two single-shade composite restorations, ormocer-based composite (OBC) and methacrylate resin-based composite (RBC), after storing them in different staining media. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, two universal shade composite restorative materials were tested: a nanohybrid OBC (Admira fusion X-tra, Voco) and a supra-nanofilled RBC (Omnichroma, Toukyama). In total, 60 cylindrical centralized cavities (diameter: 5 mm, depth: 2 mm) were prepared in sound extracted-human central incisors and divided into two equal groups according to the restorative material used (n = 30). According to the storage media, the teeth of each group were divided into three subgroups (n = 10): artificial saliva, black tea, and cola. The restoration color was evaluated for all teeth at baseline and after four weeks of storage. The color stability (∆E) was measured using a reflective spectrophotometer (X-Rite, model RM200QC, Neu-Isenburg, Germany). The surface roughness (Ra) was evaluated using three-dimensional optical profilometry (Wyko, Model NT 1100, Veeco, Tucson, USA). Additionally, the extracted data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), one-way ANOVA and Student's t-test. RESULTS: In the baseline evaluation, there were no statistically significant differences with respect to color matching or surface roughness results between the two studied restorative materials. However, the differences were statistically significant after storing them in different media. CONCLUSION: Universal composites showed satisfactory color matching with different teeth colors and accepted surface smoothness, whereas the aging procedure exerted a negative effect on their color stability and surface characteristics.

The purpose of this study was to develop a chewing gum containing a novel antimicrobial peptide GH12 and evaluate its biocompatibility, antimicrobial activity, and caries-preventive effects in vivo and in vitro. GH12 chewing gum was developed using a conventional method and its extracts were prepared in artificial saliva. GH12 concentration in the extracts was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography; extracts were used for growth curve assay, time-kill assay, crystal violet staining assay, scanning electron microscopy, and Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. A rat caries model was established, and molars were treated topically with extracts for 5 weeks. Weight gain monitoring, hematoxylin-eosin staining, micro-computed tomography, and Keyes scoring were conducted. Significant inhibition of Streptococcus mutans growth and biofilm formation was observed. Extracts displayed low cytotoxicity against human gingival epithelial cells. No significant differences in weight gain or signs of harm to the mucosal tissues in any of the rats were observed. Keyes scores of caries lesions in the GH12 chewing gum group were lower than those of the negative control group. It was concluded that GH12 chewing gum showed good biocompatibility, antimicrobial activity, and caries-preventive effects, exhibiting great potential to prevent dental caries as an adjuvant to regular oral hygiene.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo principal descrever por meio de um relato de caso clínico o diagnóstico e a conduta clínica de uma paciente portadora da Síndrome da Ardência Bucal (SAB). A SAB é definida como uma dor crônica e de difícil diagnóstico e difícil tratamento. O local mais acometido pela SAB é a língua, lábios e mucosa jugal, mas pode estar presente em qualquer parte da mucosa oral, causando desconforto e interferindo na qualidade de vida do paciente. Paciente do sexo feminino, leucoderma, 39 anos, sem histórico de doenças sistêmicas, saúde geral em bom estado, procurou atendimento no Centro Universitário da Serra Gaúcha ­ FSG por apresentar sensação de ardência recorrente na língua e na mucosa, que aumentava em momentos de estresse ou durante a ingestão de alimentos cítricos, picantes ou quentes. A paciente realizou exames complementares (hemograma completo, glicemia de jejum, exame de vitamina B12) e primeiramente, iniciou-se o tratamento com antifúngico tópico para remoção de uma camada esbranquiçada presente no dorso da língua. Após a remissão desta, foi utilizado AD-Muc tópico 2 vezes ao dia, durante 2 semanas e relatou ter reduzido seus sintomas em torno de 70%. A paciente ainda apresentava xerostomia e, então foi prescrita saliva artificial. A paciente teve a regressão total de seus sintomas. Pode-se concluir que diversos fatores etiológicos estão relacionados com a SAB, porém sua causa específica permanece desconhecida. O tratamento é paliativo, entretanto, o Ad-muc tópico se mostrou eficaz na redução da sintomatologia da SAB juntamente com o uso da saliva artificial(AU)


The present study aimed to describe, through a clinical case report, the diagnosis and clinical conduct of a patient with Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS). BMSis defined as chronic pain that is difficult to diagnose and difficult to treat. The site most affected by BMS is the tongue, lips, and cheek mucosa, but it can be present in any part of the oral mucosa, causing discomfort and interfering with the patient's quality of life. Female patient, leucoderma, 39 years old, with no history of systemic diseases, general health in good condition, sought care at the Centro Universitário da Serra Gaúcha - FSG for presenting a recurrent burning sensation in the tongue and mucosa, which increased in times of stress or while eating citrus, spicy or hot foods. The patient underwent complementary tests (complete blood count, fasting blood glucose, vitamin B12 test) and first, treatment with topical antifungal was started to remove a whitish layer present on the back of the tongue. After remission, topical AD-Muc was used twice a day for 2 weeks and reported to have reduced his symptoms by around 70%. The patient still had xerostomia and then artificial saliva was prescribed. The patient had a total regression of her symptoms. It can be concluded that several etiological factors are related to SAB, but its specific cause remains unknown. Treatment is palliative, however, topical Ad-muc is effective in reducing the symptomsof BMS also with the use of artificial saliva(AU)

OBJECTIVE: One of the major problems in fixed orthodontic treatments is the control of enamel demineralization, white spots lesions (WSL), and dental caries around the brackets, which can be stopped by strengthening the remineralization process. The aim of this study was to investigate the synergistic effect of propolis nanoparticles (NPro) and nano-curcumin-based photodynamic therapy (NCur-PDT) in the remineralization of WSL ex vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Experimental period was 5.5 months. After synthesis and characterization of NPro, the extracted bovine teeth were demineralized using a demineralization solution. They were divided into 7 groups (n=10) and treated in the following groups: 1) Negative control (artificial saliva), 2) Positive control or control of treatment (2% neutral sodium fluoride gel; NSF), 3) Nano-curcumin (NCur), 4) NPro, 5) Diode laser irradiation (light), 6) NCur with irradiation (NCur-PDT) and 7) NPro plus NCur-PDT (NPro+NCur-PDT). The treatment duration was 3 months and each treatment was conducted on T1 (the end of the third week), T2 (the end of the sixth week), T3 (the end of the ninth week), and T4 (the end of the twelfth week). Then, the microhardness, surface changes, and surface topography of the enamel were examined using digital hardness tester, DIAGNOdent Pen Reading, and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. RESULTS: In all groups, after demineralization, the microhardness of tooth enamel decreased and after each of the treatments, the amount of microhardness significantly increased over time except light and artificial saliva groups. The earliest significant change in microhardness improvement was observed in the NPro+NCur-PDT group at T2 (P<0.05). Also, at T2, DIAGNODent Pen revealed the earliest significant improved change in the level of mineralization degree in the NPro+NCur-PDT group. NCur and light irradiation groups alone, like the control group (artificial saliva), did not lead to remineralization (P>0.05). Also, the NPro+NCur-PDT treatment results obtained from SEM after the last treatment in the twelfth week showed that remineralization in that group has significantly improved compared to other groups. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that combined use of NPro and NCur-PDT had more enamel remineralization efficacy in a shorter period. Simultaneous application of NPro and NCur-PDT had also a stronger therapeutic effect after 3 months.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Studies on the behavior of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) monolithic materials subjected to gastric juice alternating with brushing-as occurs in patients with bulimia nervosa-are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate, over a simulated 5-year period, the effect of gastric juice alternating with brushing on the roughness, topography, and staining susceptibility of CAD-CAM monolithic materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Disks of Lava Ultimate (LU), Vita Enamic (VE), IPS Empress CAD (EMP), IPS e.max CAD (EMAX), and Vita Suprinity (VS) were randomly allocated to artificial saliva+brushing or gastric juice+brushing groups, simulating 1, 3, and 5 years of clinical function. The roughness (Sa) and topography were evaluated at baseline (T0) and at each simulated year. For the staining susceptibility (ΔE00), the CIELab color coordinates were registered at baseline, and, at the end of the fifth simulated year, the specimens were immersed in deionized water, coffee, or cola before the second reading. Roughness data were submitted to mixed repeated-measures ANOVA and Bonferroni, and the staining susceptibility data were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA and the Games-Howell test (α=.05). RESULTS: The gastric juice+brushing led to higher roughness than artificial saliva+brushing only in the VE at T3 and T5 (P<.01). In both treatments, the LU and VE showed topography changes and an increase in roughness over time (P<.001), in addition to higher roughness than the other materials (P<.001). The staining susceptibility of the materials to each staining solution was not affected by the treatment (P>.05). The LU and VS groups were more stained by coffee (P<.001), while the VE and EMP groups were more stained by cola (P≤.016), except for the EMP in the gastric juice+brushing, where no significant difference was found between cola and coffee (P>.05). The EMAX was imperceptibly affected by the 3 solutions. CONCLUSIONS: Concerning roughness and topography, the LU and VE were the most affected by both treatments. The staining susceptibility of the materials was not affected by the treatment.

PURPOSE: This study examined four cleaning methods and three chemical treatments for artificial saliva-contaminated fiber posts in terms of bonding durability to resin composite core materials. METHODS: Non-contaminated fiber posts (Tokuyama FR Post, Tokuyama Dental) and those contaminated (GC Fiber Post, GC) with artificial saliva (Saliveht Aerosol, Teijin Pharma) were used. Washing and drying (WD), alcohol cleaning (AlC), H3PO4 etching (P/WD), alumina blasting (B/D) for decontamination and silanization (Clearfil Ceramic Primer Plus, Kuraray Noritake Dental, Si), resin priming (HC Primer, Shofu, MMA), and bonding resin application (Clearfil Universal Bond Quick, Kuraray Noritake Dental, BR) for chemical treatment were performed. The treated fiber post was planted inside a cylindrical tube and filled with resin composite (DC Core Automix ONE, Kuraray Noritake Dental). The specimen was sectioned, and a push-out test was performed after 24 h, 1 month, and 3 months. The fracture surface was observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). RESULTS: Adhesion between the non-contaminated fiber post and resin composite did not improve by silanization and decreased by alumina blasting. SEM observations revealed a fractured glass fiber by alumina blasting. Saliva contamination decreased the bond strength between the fiber post and resin composite; however, recovery was achieved by WD, Alc, P/WD, and B/D. Compared to Si, BR (P = 0.009) was effective in restraining the long-term durability of bonding, whereas MMA (P = 0.99) was not. CONCLUSION: The application of bonding resin after alcohol cleaning is the most convenient and effective clinical procedure for fiber post surface treatment.

Xerostomia, known as dry mouth, is caused by decreased salivary flow. Treatment with lubricating oral rinses provides temporary relief of dry mouth discomfort; however, it remains unclear how their composition affects mineralized dental tissues. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the effects of common components in xerostomia oral rinses on biomimetic apatite with varying carbonate contents. Carbonated apatite was synthesized and exposed to one of the following solutions for 72 hours at varying pHs: water-based, phosphorus-containing (PBS), mucin-like containing (MLC), or fluoride-containing (FC) solutions. Post-exposure results indicated that apatite mass decreased irrespective of pH and solution composition, while solution buffering was pH dependent. Raman and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the addition of phosphorus, mucin-like molecules, and fluoride in solution decreases mineral carbonate levels and changed the lattice spacing and crystallinity of bioapatite, indicative of dissolution/recrystallization processes. The mineral recrystallized into a less-carbonated apatite in the PBS and MLC solutions, and into fluorapatite in FC. Tap water did not affect the apatite lattice structure suggesting formation of a labile carbonate surface layer on apatite. These results reveal that solution composition can have varied and complex effects on dental mineral beyond dissolution, which can have long term consequences on mineral solubility and mechanics. Therefore, clinicians should consider these factors when advising treatments for xerostomia patients.

BACKGROUND: Taste disorder is a frequent drug-induced or disease-related oral trouble. Various pharmacological, surgical, or physical treatments have previously been proposed for taste function recovery. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present systematic review was to assess the effects of palliative and curative interventions on taste recovery in light of recent literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement, a search of the literature published up to June 2019 was conducted using MEDLINE via PubMed, EMBASE, and The US National Institutes of Health Trials Register (PROSPERO registration reference: CRD 42019139315). The methodological quality of the included trials was rated with the "Delphi list For Quality Assessment of Randomized Clinical Trials" and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. RESULTS: From the 1842 titles first identified, 28 articles met the inclusion criteria. Interventions included zinc (aspartate, sulfate, gluconate, acetate, picolinate, and Polaprezinc®), esomeprazole, L-thyroxin, bethanechol, oral glutamine, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, alpha-lipoic acid, Ginkgo biloba, artificial saliva, pilocarpine, local anesthesia, and improved oral hygiene. The quality of evidence ranged from poor to high. CONCLUSION: Improving oral hygiene may promote taste ability. Zinc may prevent and alleviate taste disorder in patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The systematic review provided evidence about the clinical efficacy of oral procedures, zinc supplementation, and palliative cares in dysgeusic patients. Further research is needed to find effective treatments with low adverse effects.

Saliva plays a crucial role in oral cavity. In addition to its buffering and moisturizing properties, saliva fulfills many biofunctional requirements, including antibacterial activity that is essential to assure proper oral microbiota growth. Due to numerous extra- and intra-systemic factors, there are many disorders of its secretion, leading to oral dryness. Saliva substitutes used in such situations must meet many demands. This study was design to evaluate the effect of core-shell magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) adding (gold-coated and aminosilane-coated nanoparticles NPs) on antimicrobial (microorganism adhesion, biofilm formation), rheological (viscosity, viscoelasticity) and physicochemical (pH, surface tension, conductivity) properties of three commercially available saliva formulations. Upon the addition of NPs (20 µg/mL), antibacterial activity of artificial saliva was found to increase against tested microorganisms by 20% to 50%. NPs, especially gold-coated ones, decrease the adhesion of Gram-positive and fungal cells by 65% and Gram-negative bacteria cells by 45%. Moreover, the addition of NPs strengthened the antimicrobial properties of tested artificial saliva, without influencing their rheological and physicochemical properties, which stay within the range characterizing the natural saliva collected from healthy subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are a versatile material, offering the opportunity for ion exchange with the oral environment. The aim of this study was to develop a GIC that delivers a controlled, rechargeable dose of chlorhexidine (CHX) over an extended period without compromising mechanical properties. METHODS: GICs were supplemented with finely milled particles of chlorhexidine hexametaphosphate (CHX-HMP). CHX release into artificial saliva was measured over 660 days, and recharge with CHX and CHX-HMP was investigated. Mechanical properties were investigated, and an agar diffusion test was carried out to assess antimicrobial properties using Streptococcus mutans and Scardovia wiggsiae. RESULTS: Dose-dependent CHX release was observed, and this was ongoing at 660 days. Compared with related studies of GICs containing CHX-HMP, the fine, dry particles resulted in fewer adverse effects on mechanical properties, including tensile, compressive and biaxial flexural strength, with 1% CHX-HMP GICs indistinguishable from control specimens. The GICs could be recharged with CHX using both a conventional CHX digluconate solution comparable to commercial mouthrinses, and a suspension of CHX-HMP of equivalent concentration. Recharging with CHX digluconate increased subsequent CHX release by 50% compared with no recharge, and recharging with CHX-HMP increased subsequent CHX release by 100% compared with no recharge. The GICs inhibited growth of St. mutans and Sc. wiggsiae in a simple agar diffusion model. SIGNIFICANCE: These materials, which provide sustained CHX release over clinically relevant timescales, may find application as a restorative material intended to inhibit secondary caries as well as in temporary restorations and fissure sealants.
