RESUMO

Fever is a serious condition that can lead to various consequences ranging from prolonged illness to death. Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels et Gilg (T. hemsleyanum) has been used for centuries to treat fever, but the specific chemicals responsible for its antipyretic effects are not well understood. This study aimed to isolate and identify the chemicals with antipyretic bioactivity in T. hemsleyanum extracts and to provide an explanation for the use of T. hemsleyanum as a Chinese herbal medicine for fever treatment. Our results demonstrate that kaempferol 3-rutinoside (K3OR) could be successfully isolated and purified from the roots of T. hemsleyanum. Furthermore, K3OR exhibited a significant reduction in rectal temperature in a mouse model of fever. Notably, a 4 µM concentration of K3OR showed more effective antipyretic effects than ibuprofen and acetaminophen. To explore the underlying mechanism, we conducted an RNA sequencing analysis, which revealed that PXN may act as a key regulator in the fever process induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In the mouse model of fever, K3OR significantly promoted the secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α during the early stage in the LPS-treated group. However, during the middle to late stages, K3OR facilitated the elimination of IL-6 and TNF-α in the LPS-treated group. Overall, our study successfully identified the chemicals responsible for the antipyretic bioactivity in T. hemsleyanum extracts, and it answered the question as to why T. hemsleyanum is used as a traditional Chinese herbal medicine for treating fever. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the therapeutic potential of T. hemsleyanum in managing fever, and they provide a basis for further research and development in this field.

BACKGROUND: Hyperthermia complicates 21% of cases of intrapartum epidural analgesia, but the mechanism is unclear. One hypothesis is that blockade of cholinergic sympathetic nerves prevents active vasodilation and sweating, thus limiting heat loss. Because labour increases heat production, this could create a situation in which heat production exceeds loss, causing body temperature to rise. This physiological study tested a novel laboratory model of epidural-related hyperthermia, using exercise to simulate the increased heat production of labour and surface insulation to simulate the effect of epidural analgesia. METHODS: Twelve healthy non-pregnant participants (six female) cycled an ergometer for two hours at 20 Watts (W) on two occasions: once with surface insulation (intervention) and once without (control). Core temperature, skin temperature (eight sites), and heat loss (eight sites) were recorded. Mean body temperature and heat production were calculated. Values are mean (SD). RESULTS: Exercise increased heat production on both visits (intervention 38 (18) W; control 37 (31) W; P = 0.94). Total heat loss was less on the intervention visit (intervention 115 (19) W; control 129 (23) W; P = 0.002). Core temperature increased on both visits (intervention 0.21 (0.37)°C; control 0.19 (0.27)°C; P < 0.001). The increase in mean body temperature was greater on the intervention visit (intervention 0.47 (0.41)°C; control 0.25 (0.19)°C; P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: This laboratory model predicts that labour epidural analgesia limits heat loss by >14 W. Once the model is validated, it could be used to test the efficacy of potential interventions to prevent and treat epidural-related maternal hyperthermia.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The warming effect of low-level light therapy may contribute to its therapeutic mechanism which is beneficial for dry eye management. BACKGROUND: Low-level light therapy is proposed to work via cellular photobiomodulation and a potential thermal effect in dry eye management. This study examined the change in eyelid temperature and tear film stability after low-level light therapy compared to warm compress. METHODS: Participants with no to mild dry eye disease were randomised into control, warm compress, and low-level light therapy groups. The low-level light therapy group was treated with Eyelight mask (633 nm) for 15 minutes, the warm compress group with Bruder mask for 10 minutes, and the control group with an Eyelight mask having inactive LEDs for 15 minutes. Eyelid temperature was measured using the FLIR One® Pro thermal camera (Teledyne FLIR, Santa Barbara, CA, USA), and clinical measures of tear film stability were evaluated before and after treatment. RESULTS: Thirty-five participants (mean age ± SD, 27.3 ± 4.3 years) completed the study. Eyelid temperatures for external upper, external lower, internal upper and internal lower eyelids were significantly greater in the low-level light therapy and warm compress groups immediately after treatment compared to the control group (all p < 0.001). No difference in temperature was observed between the low-level light therapy and warm compress groups at all time points (all p > 0.05). Tear film lipid layer thickness was significantly greater after treatment (mean (95% CI), 13.1 nm (5.3 to 21.0), p < 0.005) but not different between groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: A single treatment of low-level light therapy increased eyelid temperature immediately after treatment, but the increase was not significantly different from warm compress. This suggests that thermal effects may in part contribute to the therapeutic mechanism of low-level light therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To document any discordance between the set temperature and independently measured temperature of neonatal incubators in order to determine the potential of neonatal incubators to cause hypothermia or hyperthermia in neonatal animals. SAMPLE: 5 different veterinary neonatal incubators from 2 separate manufacturers. METHODS: Internal temperatures of 5 incubators from 2 manufacturers were monitored with both internal and external monitoring devices to determine how much incubator temperatures might vary from what is reported on the incubator thermostat. The study was conducted on May 25, 2022. RESULTS: Increases in temperature as measured by thermocouple and infrared sensors of > 2 °C were detected in 3 of the 5 (60%; 95% CI, 17% to 93%) tested incubators. Temperatures exceeded 41 °C at times, despite the incubator thermostat being set to 35 °C. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Neonatal puppies have a decreased capacity to thermoregulate and are susceptible to both hypothermia and hyperthermia if environmental temperatures are not kept within a proper range. Core temperatures below 35.0 °C lead to bradycardia, dyspnea, loss of suckle reflex, hypoglycemia, gastrointestinal ileus, and multiple organ failure; temperatures above 41.1 °C lead to pulmonary edema, petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhage in multiple organs, and death.

AIM: To describe national standard care for newborn bathing and its influential factors. METHODS: A global survey was conducted using a web-based questionnaire. The targeted countries were 166 member countries of either the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) or the International Council of Nurses (ICN). An eligible person included someone well informed of midwifery education/training or neonatal care, including newborn bathing, in their country. To examine the factors associated with the standard care for newborn bathing, information on mean annual temperature, precipitation, gross domestic product per capita, and basic water coverage was collected as external factors. Student's t tests and Chi-square tests were used for analysis. RESULTS: Care standards were identified in 46 countries: seven from Africa, eight from the Americas, 15 from Asia, 14 from Europe, and two from Oceania. In most countries, newborns were bathed with warm water in a tub within 10 min. Bathing frequency, moisturization, and use of soap or cleanser varied by country. There were significant associations between bathing frequency and temperature and between moisturization and precipitation. CONCLUSION: The national standard care for newborn bathing in each country was unique. Standard bathing care was associated with the climate. More consideration should be given to the differences in standard care for newborn bathing between countries when interpreting existing studies and conducting future studies on neonatal skin care.

Background: The importance of thyroid hormones (THs) for peripheral body temperature regulation has been long recognized, as medical conditions such as hyper- and hypothyroidism lead to alterations in body temperature and energy metabolism. In the past decade, the brain actions of THs and their respective nuclear receptors, thyroid hormone receptor α1 (TRα1) and thyroid hormone receptor beta (TRß), coordinating body temperature regulation have moved into focus. However, the exact roles of the individual TR isoforms and their precise neuroanatomical substrates remain poorly understood. Methods: Here we used mice expressing a mutant TRα1 (TRα1+m) as well as TRß knockouts to study body temperature regulation using radiotelemetry in conscious and freely moving animals at different ambient temperatures, including their response to oral 3,3',5-triiodothyronine (T3) treatment. Subsequently, we tested the effects of a dominant-negative TRα1 on body temperature after adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated expression in the hypothalamus, a region known to be involved in thermoregulation. Results: While TRß seems to play a negligible role in body temperature regulation, TRα1+m mice had lower body temperature, which was surprisingly not entirely normalized at 30°C, where defects in facultative thermogenesis or tail heat loss are eliminated as confounding factors. Only oral T3 treatment fully normalized the body temperature profile of TRα1+m mice, suggesting that the mutant TRα1 confers an altered central temperature set point in these mice. When we tested this hypothesis more directly by expressing the dominant-negative TRα1 selectively in the hypothalamus via AAV transfection, we observed a similarly reduced body temperature at room temperature and 30°C. Conclusion: Our data suggest that TRα1 signaling in the hypothalamus is important for maintaining body temperature. However, further studies are needed to dissect the precise neuroanatomical substrates and the downstream pathways mediating this effect.

Piglet survival is a major challenge in the first few days postpartum and interventions during this period may improve survival and growth. This study investigated the effects of palmitoleic acid (C16:1n-7; PA) supplementation on growth performance, body temperature, fatty acid (FA), and energy metabolism in milk-replacer-fed piglets. Forty-eight piglets were stratified by body weight and randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments (0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% PA supplementation as a percent of milk replacer) and given the diet through an orogastric tube. They were fed dietary treatments every 2 h for 4 d in the first week postpartum and all were sacrificed at the end of the experiment. The piglets were weighed daily, and half in each dietary treatment group, the same piglets each day, were exposed daily to a lower temperature for 2 h. Plasma samples were collected immediately before sacrifice for analyses of FA and other plasma metabolites. The weight of organs and empty body weight were determined after sacrifice. Liver and semimembranosus muscle tissue samples were collected and analyzed for FA content. Contents of C16:1n-7 and C18:1n-7 in both plasma and liver (P < 0.001), and C16:1n-7 in semimembranosus muscle (P < 0.001) increased linearly as PA supplementation increased. Most plasma FA levels (except C16:1n-7, C16:1n-9, and C22:5n-3) were lower in piglets exposed to lower temperatures than those that were not. Plasma glucose, triglycerides, and lactate dehydrogenase levels increased linearly with PA supplementation (P < 0.001). Piglets' average daily gain, liver glycogen pool, liver weight, and gallbladder weight increased linearly (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, P < 0.05, and P < 0.001, respectively), but lung weight, liver nitrogen content, and body temperature drop decreased linearly (P < 0.01, P < 0.001, and P < 0.05, respectively) with PA supplementation. Piglets exposed to low temperature had greater liver nitrogen (P < 0.05) and lactate dehydrogenase (P < 0.001) contents but had lower liver weight (P < 0.01) and plasma lactate concentration (P < 0.05) than those that were not. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the importance of PA on the growth performance of the piglets by increasing their average daily gain and decreasing a drop in body temperature upon cold exposure, most likely due to a modified energy metabolism.


Reducing piglet mortality in the early days after birth is a significant challenge in the modern pig industry. The focus on achieving larger litter sizes has had a negative impact on piglets' birth weight and their intake of colostrum. Additionally, piglets are born without easily oxidizable brown adipose tissue and have limited body reserves, making them more vulnerable to death due to their lower capacity for thermogenesis. Therefore, it is important to explore dietary strategies that can enhance piglets' thermogenesis capacity. In this study, the role of palmitoleic acid supplementation was investigated in a dose-response design to determine its impact on growth performance, fatty acid composition, and energy metabolism of milk-replacer-fed piglets during their first week of life. The results revealed a linear increase in the average daily gain of the piglets, liver weight, and liver glycogen content with increasing palmitoleic acid supplementation. Moreover, increased palmitoleic acid supplementation was associated with a drop in body temperature when piglets were exposed to a lower temperature during the experimental period. Altogether, the study indicated that palmitoleic acid has a sparing effect on glycogen reserves and that a greater proportion of energy utilized by the piglets to maintain their body temperature was derived from the oxidation of fatty acids. The results indicated a promising approach to improve piglet survival and growth through dietary modifications of fatty acids in the diet.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the relationship between intraoperative body temperature and thiol/disulfide balance in geriatric patients scheduled for elective transurethral prostate resection surgery with spinal anesthesia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 71 patients classified as categories 1 and 2, according to American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification, were included in the study. The core temperature of the patients was recorded in the operating room after monitoring, at 5 and 30 minutes after spinal anesthesia. Total thiols, native thiols, disulfide amounts, disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol, and native thiol/total thiol were calculated as percentages after monitorization (Tpreoperative) and at 60 minutes after spinal anesthesia (Tintraoperative). RESULTS: The disulfide levels in the Tintraoperative period (29±8.9 mmol/L) were higher than the disulfide levels measured in the Tpreoperative period (18.2±8.8 mmol/L) (p<0.001). In the Tpreoperative period, the disulfide/native thiol (%) level was 4.6±2, while the disulfide/total thiol (%) level was 4.2±1.6. In the Tintraoperative period, the disulfide/native thiol (%) level was 8±2.3, while the disulfide/total thiol (%) level was 6.8±1.7. Native thiol/total thiol (%) levels for the Tpreoperative and Tintraoperative periods were 91.5±3.3 mmol/L and 86.3±3.4 mmol/L, respectively. A correlation was found between native, total thiol levels and patient age in the Tpreoperative and Tintraoperative periods. CONCLUSIONS: Oxidative stress can be reduced in geriatric patients with the possibility of developing involuntary perioperative hypothermia by regularly monitoring body temperature and applying warming techniques.

Objective. Develop a dense algorithm for calculating the speed-of-sound shift between consecutive acoustic acquisitions as a noninvasive means to evaluating temperature change during thermal ablation.Methods. An algorithm for dense speed-of-sound shift imaging (DSI) was developed to simultaneously incorporate information from the entire field of view using a combination of dense optical flow and inverse problem regularization, thus speeding up the calculation and introducing spatial agreement between pixels natively. Thermal ablation monitoring consisted of two main steps: pixel shift tracking using Farneback optical flow, and mathematical modeling of the relationship between the pixel displacement and temperature change as an inverse problem to find the speed-of-sound shift. A calibration constant translates from speed-of-sound shift to temperature change. The method performance was tested inex vivosamples and compared to standard thermal strain imaging (TSI) methods.Main results. Thermal ablation at a frequency of 2 MHz was applied to an agarose phantom that created a speed-of-sound shift measured by an L12-5 imaging transducer. A focal spot was reconstructed by solving the inverse problem. Next, a thermocouple measured the temperature rise during thermal ablation ofex vivochicken breast to calibrate the setup. Temperature changes between 3 °C and 15 °C was measured with high thermometry precision of less than 2 °C error for temperature changes as low as 8 °C. The DSI method outperformed standard TSI in both spatial coherence and runtime in high-intensity focused ultrasound-induced hyperthermia.Significance. Dense ultrasonic speed-of-sound shift imaging can successfully monitor the speed-of-sound shift introduced by thermal ablation. This technique is faster and more robust than current methods, and therefore can be used as a noninvasive, real time and cost-effective thermometry method, with high clinical applicability.

More than any other mental illness, the course, prognosis, and therapy of anorexia nervosa are shaped by the physical changes associated with being underweight. This article provides an overview of the endocrine changes associated with malnutrition and underweight. This overview serves as a basis for understanding the other articles in this special issue, which deal with the health risks associated with being underweight. In this context, the differences between underweight in anorexia nervosa and in constitutional thinness are of particular importance in assessing the impact of intentional weight loss. In this context, the regulation of hunger and satiety deserves special interest, as this is the area in which the intentional influence on body weight comes into play. Clinical consequences on, for example, fertility, bone metabolism, the homeostasis of, for example, serum glucose levels, or body temperature have been observed for a long time; nonetheless, the medical responses, apart from vitamin supplementations and advice to gain weight, are still limited. Therefore, emphasis was placed on the potential improvement of outcomes through the administration of central or peripheral hormones. Studies were identified on PubMed via a selection of relevant keywords; original texts that were cited in reviews were studied where it was advantageous. This review found some promising data on bone health and the administration of transdermal oestrogen, which is not yet widely used, as well as distinct hormonal markers to differentiate between CT and AN. We concluded that the continuous efforts to investigate the role of endocrinology in underweight and/or anorexia nervosa lead to outcome benefits and that more and higher-powered studies are needed.

Maintaining body temperature is calorically expensive for endothermic animals1. Mammals eat more in the cold to compensate for energy expenditure2, but the neural mechanism underlying this coupling is not well understood. Through behavioural and metabolic analyses, we found that mice dynamically switch between energy-conservation and food-seeking states in the cold, the latter of which are primarily driven by energy expenditure rather than the sensation of cold. To identify the neural mechanisms underlying cold-induced food seeking, we used whole-brain c-Fos mapping and found that the xiphoid (Xi), a small nucleus in the midline thalamus, was selectively activated by prolonged cold associated with elevated energy expenditure but not with acute cold exposure. In vivo calcium imaging showed that Xi activity correlates with food-seeking episodes under cold conditions. Using activity-dependent viral strategies, we found that optogenetic and chemogenetic stimulation of cold-activated Xi neurons selectively recapitulated food seeking under cold conditions whereas their inhibition suppressed it. Mechanistically, Xi encodes a context-dependent valence switch that promotes food-seeking behaviours under cold but not warm conditions. Furthermore, these behaviours are mediated by a Xi-to-nucleus accumbens projection. Our results establish Xi as a key region in the control of cold-induced feeding, which is an important mechanism in the maintenance of energy homeostasis in endothermic animals.

The body temperature of mice is higher at night than during the day. We show here that global deletion of acid-sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a) results in lower body temperature during a part of the night. ASICs are pH sensors that modulate neuronal activity. The deletion of ASIC1a decreased the voluntary activity at night of mice that had access to a running wheel but did not affect their spontaneous activity. Daily rhythms of thyrotropin-releasing hormone mRNA in the hypothalamus and of thyroid-stimulating hormone ß mRNA in the pituitary, and of prolactin mRNA in the hypothalamus and pituitary were suppressed in ASIC1a-/- mice. The serum thyroid hormone levels were however not significantly changed by ASIC1a deletion. Our findings indicate that ASIC1a regulates activity and signaling in the hypothalamus and pituitary. This likely leads to the observed changes in body temperature by affecting the metabolism or energy expenditure.

INTRODUCTION: In some athletic, occupational, military and emergency settings, cold intravenous (IV) fluids are used to facilitate whole-body cooling in an effort to treat heat illness. This treatment has anecdotal support, but currently lacks evidence supporting it as a whole-body cooling modality. Other modalities may offer superior cooling rates, and thus, patient outcomes following treatment. We sought to evaluate cooling rates of cold-IV normal saline immediately following exercise-induced hyperthermia. METHODS: Eight healthy participants (3 females; 25 ± 2y; 72.9 ± 10.9 kg) completed 2 trials in random order. Prior to exercise, participants provided a small urine sample to confirm hydration status via urine specific gravity. Wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) was assessed throughout trials. In both trials, participants exercised outdoors until rectal temperature (Tre) reached ∼38.9 °C, or volitional exhaustion, and then were cooled. In cooling, participants received either cold-IV (∼5 °C 0.9% NaCl fluids) or no treatment (sat in the shade; passive). Throughout exercise and treatment, Tre and heart rate (HR) were monitored. During exercise and every 10 min throughout cooling, participants were asked to assess thermal sensation. RESULTS: Hydration status (P = .847) was not significantly different prior to exercise between trials. WBGT throughout was not different between trials (P = .426). Maximum Tre reached was not different between cold-IV (38.88 ± 0.30 °C) and passive cooling (38.76 ± 0.28 °C) trials (P = .184). Mean cooling rate for cold-IV (0.039 ± 0.005 °C·min-1) was significantly greater than for passive cooling (0.028 ± 0.005 °C·min-1; P = .002). Tre throughout cooling was not different between trials (P = .707), but did decrease throughout (P = .008), regardless of trial. HR was decreased over time (P < .001), but cold-IV and passive cooling were not different throughout HR recovery (P = .141). Thermal sensation decreased throughout cooling (P < .001), but was not different between trials (p = .278). CONCLUSION: Emergency medical personnel should adopt treatment protocols that employ documented effective treatments for exertional heat stroke. In isolation, our data casts significant doubt for the use of cold-IV saline infusion for whole-body cooling of hyperthermic individuals.

The amount and duration of the applied heat in hyperthermia treatment are critical for cancer survivors. The challenge is to use a mechanism dealing with the tumor cells only while keeping healthy tissues unharmed. The aim of this paper is to predict the blood temperature distribution in main dimensions during hyperthermia process by deriving a new analytical solution of unsteady flow that adequately covers the cooling factor. We adopted a separation of variable method to solve the bio-heat transfer problem of unsteady blood flow. The solution is similar to Pennes' equation, except that it is for blood rather than tissue. We also performed computational simulations with varied flow conditions and thermal energy transports. The blood cooling effects were calculated with vessel's diameter, tumor's zone length, pulsating period and flow velocity. The cooling rate rises by around 133% if the tumor zone's length is extended four times the diameter of 0.5 (mm), but it is seemingly fixed with this distance if the diameter is equal or larger than 4 (mm). Likewise, the temporal variations of temperature disappear if the blood vessel has a diameter of 4 (mm) or more. Pre-heating or post-cooling techniques perform effectively given the theoretical solution; under particular conditions, the reduction percentages of the cooling effect are between 130% and 200%, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced hyperthermia preceding the onset of exertional heatstroke requires a rapid reduction in the body core temperature (Tcore) to ensure safety. In recent years, phase-change material (PCM) cooling devices have been increasingly used for rapid cooling after hyperthermia due to their superior capacity for heat absorption. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the cooling performance and effectiveness of a PCM cooling blanket on heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) recovery after exercise-induced hyperthermia. DESIGN: Randomized cross-over. METHODS: The study participants were 12 male volunteers who were engaged in professional training and completed an endurance exercise for approximately 30 min in a hot and humid environment (temperature ≈ 30 °C; relative humidity ≈ 66%). The participants underwent a 30-min cooling trial after exercise, receiving either treatment with a PCM cooling blanket (PCM group) or natural cooling (CON group). The Tcore, HR, and HRV time-domain indices were used for analysis. RESULTS: The Tcore values were significantly lower in the PCM group during cooling. Reductions in the Tcore from precooling to 20 min of cooling were significantly greater in the PCM group than in the CON group. The HR in the PCM group was lower than that recorded in the CON group at 10 and 20 min of cooling. The reduction in HR during cooling from precooling was also significantly greater in the PCM group. HRV time-domain indices during cooling in the PCM group were significantly lower compared with the CON group while elevations in some HRV time-domain indices from precooling to postcooling were significantly greater in the PCM group than in the CON group. CONCLUSIONS: The PCM cooling blanket had good cooling performance and the ability to hasten recovery of both HR and HRV. It may serve as a feasible cooling choice during transport after exercise-induced hyperthermia.

Physical exercise differentially increases body temperature according to the time of day, which shows the importance of circadian rhythm in thermal regulation. Given its contribution in central pathways involved in thermoregulation, orexin A could play a role in the regulation of core body temperature during and after exercise. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the effect of exercise, performed at two times of day, on core temperature and on the amount of orexin A in the production zone, i.e., the dorsal hypothalamus. Forty-nine male Wistar rats underwent forced treadmill exercise during the HG phase and HL phase of core temperature. Basal core temperature was recorded continuously for 48 h by implanted telemetric sensors in 11 rats. Regulation of core temperature during exercise (20 min) and after each exercise (60 min) was modeled with a modified logistic-type function. During HG exercise, core temperature curve reached a significantly higher maximum (asymptote: +0.70 ± 0.10 °C) and took longer to attain the strongest inclination of the core temperature regulation curve (Xmid: 3.46 ± 0.72 min). After HG exercise, time of recovery was significantly longer than after HL exercise. In male rats, thermoregulatory response to acute physical exercise was influenced by the time of day. There was no effect of either physical activity or time of day on the level of orexin A in the dorsal hypothalamus. Our results suggest that orexin A in the dorsal hypothalamus is not involved in the effects of physical exercise on thermoregulation.

The purpose of this article was to review and assess the results obtained from human studies on the effects of hydrotherapy, balneotherapy, and spa therapy on sleep disorders. In this study, databases such as Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Cochrane, Scopus, and sciences direct database were searched from the beginning to September 2022. All human studies that examined the effect of hydrotherapy, balneotherapy, and spa therapy on sleep disorders were published in the form of a full article in English. In the end, only 18 of the 189 articles met the criteria for analysis. Most studies have shown that balneotherapy, spa therapy, and hydrotherapy may by affecting some hormones such as histamine, serotonin, sympathetic nerves, and regulating body temperature led to increased quality and quantity of sleep. Also, the results obtained from Downs and Black show that 3 studies were rated as very good, 7 studies as good, 7 studies as fair, and 1 study as weak. The results of studies also showed that hydrotherapy leads to an improvement in the PSQI score index. Nevertheless, more clinical trials are needed to determine the mechanism of action of hydrotherapy on sleep disorders.

Hyperthermia stimulates ventilation (hyperthermia-induced hyperventilation). In exercising humans, once the core temperature reaches ∼37°C, minute ventilation (V̇e) increases linearly with rising core temperature, and the slope of the relation between V̇e and core temperature reflects the sensitivity of the response. We previously reported that sodium bicarbonate ingestion reduces V̇e during prolonged exercise in the heat without affecting the sensitivity of hyperthermia-induced hyperventilation. Here, we hypothesized that reductions in V̇e associated with sodium bicarbonate ingestion reflect elevation of the core temperature threshold for hyperthermia-induced hyperventilation. Thirteen healthy young males ingested sodium bicarbonate (0.3 g/kg body wt) (NaHCO3 trial) or sodium chloride (0.208 g/kg body wt) (NaCl trial), after which they performed a cycle exercise at 50% of peak oxygen uptake in the heat (35°C and 50% relative humidity) following a pre-cooling. The pre-cooling enabled detection of an esophageal temperature (Tes: an index of core temperature) threshold for hyperthermia-induced hyperventilation. The Tes thresholds for increases in V̇e were similar between the two trials (P = 0.514). The slopes relating V̇E to Tes also did not differ between trials (P = 0.131). However, V̇e was lower in the NaHCO3 than in the NaCl trial in the range of Tes = 36.8-38.4°C (P = 0.007, main effect of trial). These results suggest that sodium bicarbonate ingestion does not alter the core temperature threshold or sensitivity of hyperthermia-induced hyperventilation during prolonged exercise in the heat; instead, it downshifts the exercise hyperpnea.
