Objective: This research was conducted to investigate the therapeutic effects of tympanoplasty on patients with chronic otitis media with tinnitus and analyze the possible influencing factors for patient prognosis. Methods: This is a pre-post control group study, 86 patients with chronic otitis media were included as the subjects and enrolled into tinnitus group (n = 46) and the non-tinnitus group (n = 40). All patients underwent tympanoplasty under microscope or ear endoscopy. A tinnitus severity and efficacy assessment scale was employed for the evaluation of the severity of tinnitus among the subjects. In addition, tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) was utilized to evaluate disease alleviation. Results: Before treatment, the proportions of the patients with tinnitus at grades I, II, III, IV, and V amounted to 15.22%, 32.61%, 21.74%, 17.39%, and 13.04%, respectively, while they were 30.43%, 45.65%, 13.04%, 8.71%, and 2.17%, respectively 3 months after treatment (P < .05). THI scores for the patients in the tinnitus group before and 3 months after treatment amounted to 17.96 ± 3.66 and 16.21 ± 3.29, respectively (P < .05). After treatment, the air conduction (AC) and bone conduction (BC) thresholds and air-bone gap (ABG) of the two groups apparently declined (P < .05). No statistical significance was detected in the differences in disease classification, disease courses, and whether an electric drill was used among the patients between effective and invalid groups (P > .05). Conclusion: To some extent, tympanoplasty alleviated tinnitus among patients with chronic otitis media and promoted the restoration of hearing. Hence, it is worthy of application in clinical treatment.

BACKGROUND: Chronic otitis media is a middle ear cleft disease presenting with tympanic membrane perforation and discharge. Wet ear after tympanoplasty and discharging mastoid cavity are problematic in clinical practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 1050 patients of age 10 to 50 years presenting with active ear discharge and clinically diagnosed with unilateral chronic suppurative otitis media were included in the study. The patients were equally divided into two equal groups, Group ET, and AT. All patients were prescribed topical ciprofloxacin, oral levocetirizine 5 mg and n-acetyl cysteine 600 mg BD for one week. Swabs of ear discharge were collected in ET groups for antibiogram. Both groups were evaluated on next visit and treatment changed in AT groups and result observed in next visit. Surgical outcome was evaluated at end of 2 yrs. RESULT: A total of 1158 organisms were isolated in culture out of which, 69.94 % were aerobes, 13.47 % anaerobes and 16.58 % were fungi. On the second visit in group AT, treatment of 85.14 % patients was changed in accordance with culture sensitivity report. In patients with mucosal disease, only 46.87 % patients of group ET had a favorable outcome in comparison to 90.28 % patients of group AT while in patients with squamosal disease, 17.56 % patients of group ET and 28.99 % patients in group AT had a dry ear. Surgeries in AT group were found to have statistically significant higher success rate as compared to ET group.

Objective: To evaluate the long-term quality of life (QoL) in patients operated for cholesteatoma by canal wall-up tympanoplasty (CWUT) or canal wall-down tympanoplasty (CWDT) with mastoid obliteration. Methods: QoL was evaluated by the Chronic Otitis Media Questionnaire - 12 (COMQ-12). For each patient, the total score and three partial subscores, concerning disease activity, functional impairment and general impact on the patient's life were calculated. These scores were correlated with the surgical technique, as well as anatomical and functional results. Results: 68 procedures were classified as CWUT and 78 as CWDT with obliteration. The mean follow-up was 65 months. Total and partial COMQ-12 scores did not show any significant difference between the two groups. Correlation analysis showed a significant direct association between the postoperative Air-Bone Gap (ABG) and both the COMQ-12 total score and functional subscore in the CWUT group. Conclusions: This is the first study comparing CWUT and CWDT with obliteration with the COMQ-12, thus confirming the overlapping results in terms of QoL. These findings, together with the evidence of the significantly lower rates of recidivism, show that CWDT with obliteration should be considered as a good alternative to CWUT.

OBJECTIVE: It is generally recognized the most common pediatric otologic surgical procedure is ventilation tube insertion (VTI). Tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy are more frequently performed on adults. In this study we examined the incidence and age distribution of these procedures by use of a population-based birth cohort design, in order to provide an overall view of the role of these procedures in the pediatric population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the national health insurance research database in Taiwan. We retrieved data on all patients born in the years 2000 and 2001, subsequently underwent VTI, tympanoplasty or mastoidectomy from 2000 to 2013. The incidence and age distribution of these procedures were analyzed. RESULTS: The cumulative incidence of VTI, tympanoplasty, and mastoidectomy was 0.41%, 0.02% and 0.025%, respectively. VTI were more often performed on children 4 or 5 years of age. Tympanoplasties are frequently done on children older than 5, and 30.7% of them had earlier VTI. The time interval from VTI to tympanoplasty was 5.18 ±â€¯2.27 years (mean ±â€¯SD). Mastoidectomies are more often performed on children from 2 to 9 years of age. CONCLUSIONS: VTI was the most frequent otologic surgery for the pediatric population, and was more often performed on children 4-5 years old. Also, tympanoplasty is more frequently performed on children older than 5, and a third of them had prior VTI. Overall, the time interval from VTI to tympanoplasty was 5.18 years. Furthermore, children with cleft palate and congenital metabolic disorder were more prone to otologic surgical procedures.

OBJECTIVES:: The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and safety of ossiculoplasty under local anesthesia in an office setting without sedation. METHODS:: Between May 2017 and November 2017, patients who presented with conductive hearing loss and known isolated ossicular discontinuities were offered ossiculoplasty under local anesthesia. Inclusion criteria included age ⩾ 18 years, adequate transcanal access, and the ability to lie supine for up to 45 minutes. Exclusion criteria included associated tympanic membrane perforation and the presence of middleear or mastoid cholesteatoma or infection. RESULTS:: Fourteen patients underwent the procedure. The mean age was 48.3 years (range, 19-74 years). Six were primary and 8 revision cases. There were 8 partial and 6 total prosthesis placements. The mean operative time was 34 minutes (range, 26-43 minutes). All patients tolerated the procedure to completion. There were no intraoperative complications. The mean air conduction pure-tone average was 76.6 dB and the mean bone conduction pure-tone average was 27.2 dB, with a preoperative air-bone gap of 49.9 dB. Air conduction pure-tone average significantly improved to 45.2 dB ( P < .0001). Air-bone gap significantly improved to 17.8 dB ( P < .0001). CONCLUSIONS:: Ossiculoplasty using partial or total prostheses can be safely performed in the office setting under local anesthesia without sedation in carefully selected patients. This has potentially significant patient and system benefits.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate electromechanical excitation as an alternative excitation mode for middle ear transfer function (METF) measurements as well as real-time feedback in prosthetic ossicular reconstruction. METHOD: In eight human cadaveric temporal bones, the ossicular chain was excited using acoustic and mechanical (floating mass transducer, FMT) stimulation to determine the METF. After disconnecting the ossicular chain and reconstruction with partial or total prosthesis the METFs were measured again. Continuous FMT stimulation was then applied to improve the prosthesis' position using real-time feedback of the METF. RESULTS: Mechanical stimulation of ossicular vibration showed characteristic differences to acoustic excitation resulting from the force characteristics of the FMT. Furthermore, the interspecimen METF variability was greater with electromechanical than acoustic stimulation because of interspecimen variability in the FMT coupling conditions. When the METF with FMT excitation was used as a real-time feedback tool, a measurable improvement in the quality of ossicular reconstruction could be achieved. CONCLUSIONS: Mechanical excitation is an effective and suitable alternative stimulation method in experimental METF measurements. The system provides real-time feedback for ossicular reconstruction in the experimental setting. Some influencing factors still need to be distinguished for reliable measurements. However, the method does not yet meet the requirements for clinical application as an intraoperative, real-time monitoring tool. However, the system could be an excellent model for high-end cadaveric temporal bone training in ossiculoplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment of conductive hearing loss runs the risk of damage to the inner ear in the mechanism of acoustic trauma. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the function of the organ of Corti, expressed as bone conduction threshold at the frequency of 4000 Hz for selected operations: mastoidectomy and canal-wall-down procedure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The material was collected from patients with chronic otitis media in the Department of Otolaryngology and ENT Oncology, Collegium Medicum of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Bydgoszcz in 2004-2009. All patients were examined with pure tone audiometry threshold before surgery and at least three years after surgery. The analyzed group of patients was divided into subgroups depending on the type of operation according to To classification and procedures for resection: mastoidectomy and canal-wall-down procedure. The results were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: In the analyzed period of three years after surgery there was no statistically significant difference between groups, although there were higher values for tympanoplasty type 1 with mastoidectomy compared with tympanoplasty type 1 without mastoidectomy - respectively 25.67 dB and 18.53 dB. In the study, there was no statistically significant the difference in bone conduction threshold for frequency 4000 Hz within the type 2 tympanoplasty according to Tosa comparing canal wall-up and canal-wall-down procedure. CONCLUSIONS: Mastoidectomy or canal-wall-down procedure do not affect the bone conduction threshold for a frequency of 4000 Hz after tympanoplasty in long-term observation.

The tympanic membrane (TM) is an exquisite structure that captures and transmits sound from the environment to the ossicular chain of the middle ear. The creation of TM grafts by multi-material three-dimensional (3D) printing may overcome limitations of current graft materials, e.g. temporalis muscle fascia, used for surgical reconstruction of the TM. TM graft scaffolds with either 8 or 16 circumferential and radial filament arrangements were fabricated by 3D printing of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), flex-polyactic acid (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) materials followed by uniform infilling with a fibrin-collagen composite hydrogel. Digital opto-electronic holography (DOEH) and laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) were used to measure acoustic properties including surface motions and velocity of TM grafts in response to sound. Mechanical properties were determined using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Results were compared to fresh cadaveric human TMs and cadaveric temporalis fascia. Similar to the human TM, TM grafts exhibit simple surface motion patterns at lower frequencies (400 Hz), with a limited number of displacement maxima. At higher frequencies (>1000 Hz), their displacement patterns are highly organized with multiple areas of maximal displacement separated by regions of minimal displacement. By contrast, temporalis fascia exhibited asymmetric and less regular holographic patterns. Velocity across frequency sweeps (0.2-10 kHz) measured by LDV demonstrated consistent results for 3D printed grafts, while velocity for human fascia varied greatly between specimens. TM composite grafts of different scaffold print materials and varied filament count (8 or 16) displayed minimal, but measurable differences in DOEH and LDV at tested frequencies. TM graft mechanical load increased with higher filament count and is resilient over time, which differs from temporalis fascia, which loses over 70% of its load bearing properties during mechanical testing. This study demonstrates the design, fabrication and preliminary in vitro acoustic and mechanical evaluation of 3D printed TM grafts. Data illustrate the feasibility of creating TM grafts with acoustic properties that reflect sound induced motion patterns of the human TM; furthermore, 3D printed grafts have mechanical properties that demonstrate increased resistance to deformation compared to temporalis fascia.

In this article, we aim to enlighten practitioners and patients involved with acupressure beads and to contribute to their safer use by reporting a unique case of insidious intrusion of an acupressure bead into the eustachian tube. A metallic object was found in the eustachian tube of a patient while conducting a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination. The object was later confirmed to be an auricular acupressure bead, and was successfully removed by performing a tympanoplasty and a canal wall down mastoidectomy. The bead was assumed to have passed through an existing perforation of the tympanic membrane. According to previously published literature, tympanic membrane perforations exist in ∼1% of the population. Therefore, middle-ear foreign bodies are relatively common occurrences for otolaryngologists. However, metallic objects such as acupressure beads are especially important in the sense that they can cause severe burns during MRI. To avoid potential complications, acupressure-bead practitioners should be aware of the possibility that intrusions through the tympanic membrane could go unnoticed.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is no consensus on the prognostic factors regarding pos-toperative recurrence after myringoplasty. In this study, we investigated the preoperative clinical findings and postoperative results after primary myringoplasty and compared them with those of revision myringoplasty. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Computerized database of 861 clinical records of last 20 years were analyzed retrospectively for the subjects who underwent myringoplasty at the Department of Otolaryngology, University of Korea. All the surgeries were done under general or local anesthesia by senior surgeons. Primary and revision cases of myringoplasty or type 1 tympanoplasty followed up at least for longer than 3 months were only included in the study. Those other cases of tympanoplasty types, concomitant ossiculoplasty and/or mastoidectomy, or those with the presence of cholesteatoma and those that required repair during exploratory tympanotomy were excluded. RESULTS: 535 primary and 101 revision cases have met our inclusion criteria. Overall, in this study, the failure rates of primary and revision myringoplasty were 11.02% and 5.94%, respectively. Significantly different among the prognostic factors were such as sex, age, anesthesia, surgical approach, the presence of otorreha, size of eardrum perforation, external auditory canal narrowing, valsalva test, degree of pneumatization, graft materials, tympanoplasty type, previous mastoidectomy, the presence of bilateral otitis media influencing on myringoplasty revision, and the presence of otorrhea and sclerotic type of mastoid pneumatization. CONCLUSION: Among various prognostic factors of myringoplasty, poor prognostic factors were preoperative otorrhea and poor pneumatization.

Presentamos el caso de una paciente inmmunodeprimida, que desarrolló un cuadro de otitis externa con pobre respuesta al tratamiento convencional y posterior aislamiento de Pseudomona Aeruginosa en el cultivo de secreción ótica. El diagnóstico definitivo fue de otitis externa maligna. Nuestro objetivo es describir los hallazgos gammagráficos y analizar su correlación con los hallazgos clínico-quirúrgicos y valorar las posibles causas de la discordancia encontrada(AU)


We report the case of an immunocompromised female patient with external otitis, who developed a picture of external otitis with poor response to conventional treatment and subsequent isolation of Pseudomona Aeruginosa in the ear secretion culture. The final diagnosis was malignant external otitis. Our objective is to describe the scintigraphic findings as well as to analyze their correlation with the clinical pattern and to evaluate the possible causes of the discordance found(AU)

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether commercial air travel soon after tympanoplasty significantly affects graft healing rates. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 169 patients who underwent tympanoplasty from 1993 to 2009, comparing two groups of patients: 69 patients who flew 1 day after surgery and 100 who did not. The confounding factors analyzed were side of surgery, size of perforation, surgical approach, graft material, and grafting technique. The primary outcome measure analyzed was successful closure of the perforation at the first follow-up visit, at 4 weeks, evidenced by direct otoendoscopic examination. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the confounding variables between the two groups. There was no significant difference in the primary outcome measure of graft healing rates between the two groups (p = 0.494). Additionally, the overall graft healing rates compared favorably with previously published data from other authors. CONCLUSIONS: Early commercial air travel after tympanoplasty does not significantly affect graft healing rates and should be considered a relatively safe option.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prognostic factors that affect surgical and audiologic outcomes in inlay tympanoplasty after long-term follow-up. DESIGN: Case series study. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: Sixty-two patients who underwent 71 procedures were enrolled in the study. Patient ages ranged from 31 to 87 years (mean [SD] age, 61.2 [12.9] years). Mean (SD) follow-up was 635.7 (284.7) days. The inclusion criteria were (1) inlay cartilage tympanoplasty performed using local anesthesia via a transcanal route, (2) chronic otitis media with stable perforation, and (3) dry ear without middle ear disease. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The success rate and hearing change at the last follow-up visit. RESULTS: The overall success rate was 87.3% at the last visit. Using multivariate analysis, sex, age, size of perforation, side of perforation, and the presence of diabetes mellitus and external auditory canal otomycosis did not affect the success. Smoking was the only independent factor for the prognosis of surgical outcome (odds ratio [OR], 8.16; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.74-36.89; P < .006). On the other hand, age (OR, 6.62; 95% CI, 1.13-38.47; P = .03) and perforation size (OR, 0.11; 95% CI, 0.10-0.79; P = .03) were independent factors for the prognosis of audiologic outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The frequency of failure was significantly higher for smokers than for nonsmokers. To quit smoking is highly recommended preoperatively for individuals scheduled for chronic otitis media inlay tympanoplasty intervention. Younger patients and those with larger perforations (>50%) were more likely to benefit from this operation.

UNLABELLED: Round window's movability measurements with helping of LDV in evaluation of ossicular chain functioning. AIM OF STUDY: Quantitive evaluation of round window movability in normal conditions and after malleus stapes assembly reconstruction were aims of the study. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In the experiment there were taken 10 non-frozen temporal bones harvested within 48 hours. Temporal bones specimens were prepared like in closed technique with antromastoidectomy and large posterior tympanotomy. Hearing system before and after MSA reconstruction were evaluated by measurement of round window movement. Measurements were performed at four frequencies: 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, 4000 Hz, 8000 Hz. RESULTS: In the normal ossicular chain the biggest movability were stated at frequency of 1 kHz. After reconstruction at all frequencies measurements were significantly worse. In reconstructed ears the highest movabilities were stated at frequencies 2000 Hz and 4000 Hz. CONCLUSIONS: Round window movability could be measured by Laser Doppler Vibrometry in posterior tympanotomy approach. Before reconstruction the biggest movability were evaluated at 1000 Hz and after MSA at 2000 Hz

Stroboscopic holography was used to quantify dynamic deformations of the tympanic membrane (TM) of the entire surface of the TM before and after cartilage tympanoplasty of the posterior or posterior-superior part of the TM. Cartilage is widely used in tympanoplasties to provide mechanical stability for the TM. Three human cadaveric temporal bones were used. A 6 mm x 3 mm oval cartilage graft was placed through the widely opened facial recess onto the medial surface of the posterior or posterior-superior part of the TM. The graft was either in contact with the bony tympanic rim and manubrium or not. Graft thickness was either 0.5 or 1.0mm. Stroboscopic holography produced displacement amplitude and phase maps of the TM surface in response to stimulus sound. Sound stimuli were 0.5, 1, 4 and 7 (or 8)kHz tones. Middle-ear impedance was measured from the motion of the entire TM. Cartilage placement generally produced reductions in the motion of the TM apposed to the cartilage, especially at 4 kHz and 7 or 8 kHz. Some parts of the TM showed altered motion compared to the control in all three cases. In general, middle-ear impedance was either unchanged or increased somewhat after cartilage reconstruction both at low (0.5 and 1 kHz) and high (4 and 7 kHz) frequencies. At 4 kHz, with the 1.0mm thick graft that was in contact with the bony tympanic rim, the impedance slightly decreased. While our earlier work with time-averaged holography allowed us to observe differences in the pattern of TM motion caused by application of cartilage to the TM, stroboscopic holography is more sensitive to TM motions and allowed us to quantify the magnitude and phase of motion of each point on the TM surface. Nonetheless, our results are similar to those of our earlier work: The placement of cartilage on the medial surface of TM reduces the motion of the TM that apposes the cartilage. These obvious local changes occur even though the cartilage had little effect on the sound-induced motion of the stapes.

CONCLUSION: The pathology of chronic otitis media (COM) could delay and reduce the energy transfer of sound to the inner ear. The significant improvement of postoperative vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) response rate and p13 latencies in the group of patients with no or negative postoperative ABG gain provided evidence that the sound energy inducing a VEMP might be different from the energy producing the auditory perception. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the VEMP in patients with COM before and after surgery. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-four subjects with unilateral COM were enrolled. A pure tone audiogram and VEMP using 500 Hz unilateral short tone-burst stimulations were recorded before and 3 months after surgery. The postoperative VEMP responses were compared with the responses before surgery and the healthy controls. RESULTS: After surgery, the 500 Hz air-bone gap (ABG) decreased significantly and the VEMP response rate increased significantly from 41.7% to 66.7% (p<0.05, bi-test). However, both the preoperative and postoperative p13 latencies were significantly longer than those of the healthy controls (p<0.05, Wilcoxon rank-sum test). In the 18 patients whose 500 Hz ABG did not improve with surgery, the p13 latencies were significantly shorter postoperatively (p<0.05, sign test), and the response rate also improved significantly from 44.4% (8/18) to 77.8% (14/18) (p<0.05, bi-test).

OBJECTIVE: To compare the reconstruction results of a long incus process defect using 3 different partial ossicular replacement prostheses (PORP). STUDY DESIGN: Temporal bone experiments and retrospective case review. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIAL AND PATIENTS: The experimental study was performed on 18 temporal bones; 66 patients with retraction pockets, chronic otitis media with or without cholesteatoma. INTERVENTIONS: Ossiculoplasty using 3 different PORP: titanium angle prosthesis, autologous incus interposition, and titanium clip prosthesis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Laser Doppler vibrometry in temporal bones measured transmission properties of the PORP. Patients were retrospectively assessed up to 5 years after surgery. Audiologic data were analyzed for preoperative and postoperative air conduction and air-bone gap at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 kHz. Statistical analyses compared the outcome in the experimental and clinical setting. RESULTS: Experimentally, the titanium PORP showed similar transmission properties because the overall difference to the intact specimen was -4.14 +/- 0.59 dB for the titanium angle prosthesis and -4.61 +/- 0.57 dB for the titanium clip prosthesis. The transmission after an autologous incus interposition was significantly worse (-9.32 +/- 0.39 dB, p < or = 0.001) compared with the other prostheses. Patients' mean postoperative air-bone gap was 25.5 +/- 1.2 dB and less than 20 dB in at least 66% of cases without any significant differences between the groups. CONCLUSION: In the clinical setting, the confounding factors that influence the acoustic outcome after partial ossiculoplasty obscure the prosthesis-related transmission factors that can otherwise be derived in the experimental setting. The results do not generally favor the use of 1 specific prosthesis, rather they suggest that the correct choice of a prosthesis be based on the anatomic and pathophysiologic conditions found in the individual patient.

CONCLUSION: Retroauricular tympanoplasty and tympanomastoidectomy under local anesthesia with sedation can be well tolerated by the patient, with minimum discomfort. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate patient discomfort from pain, body/neck position, noise, and anxiety during tympanoplasties and mastoidectomies performed under local anesthesia with sedation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective study of 83 surgeries in 62 patients (28 type I tympanoplasties, 12 tympanoplasties with ossicular reconstruction, 40 canal wall up mastoidectomies, and 3 revision tympanoplasties). Local infiltration used lidocaine 2% with 1:100 000 epinephrine infiltrated in the retroauricular area and from below the pinna in a 'V' pattern. Sedation was achieved with 50 mg of intramuscular promethazine 1 h before surgery and intravenous midazolam (0.03 mg/kg) at the beginning of surgery. Subsequent doses of midazolam were given to maintain adequate sedation, up to 10 mg. The discomfort during surgery was assessed by the patient with a score from 0 to 4 (0 = no discomfort and 4 = extreme discomfort). RESULTS: Discomfort due to pain had a mean score of 0.83. Noise discomfort (from drilling and manipulation of instruments) had the lowest mean score (0.70), and discomfort from body and neck position had the highest mean score (1.51).

The present study was conducted to evaluate whether the administration of ciprofloxacin 0.3%/dexamethasone 0.1% (Ciprodex)-soaked gelfoam during tympanoplasty has adverse effects on graft healing. Records of patients who had undergone tympanoplasty with Ciprodex-soaked gelfoam packing placed in the middle and external ear canal were reviewed. The time to heal for each patient and the number of postoperative perforations/complications were recorded. Sixty-four charts met the inclusion criteria. Most procedures were primary type I tympanoplasties with temporalis fascia grafts. Healing of the tympanic membrane was documented in 95.3% of patients, and mean time to healing was 49 d. Two patients who underwent revision tympanoplasty failed to exhibit healing at any visit after surgery. Postoperative complications were infrequent. Patients with Ciprodex-soaked gelfoam packing placed during tympanoplasty showed an overall rate of healing of 95%. Although this study is limited by its retrospective design, the data suggest that the use of Ciprodex during tympanoplasty has no detrimental effect on postoperative graft healing.
