The present study investigated the effects of combined and singular oral administration of Bio-Aqua® with different dosages of sodium diformate (NaDF) on biochemical indices, innate immune responses, antioxidant effects, and expressions of immunological related genes of Caspian brown trout (Salmo trutta caspius). Fingerlings Salmo trutta caspius (n = 1800; initial weight 15 ± 3 g) were randomly allocated into five groups (120 fish group-1 in triplicates). Control diet: without any addition, G1, G2, G3, and G4 received diets containing 0.2 g kg-1 commercial probiotic Bio-Aqua® combined with 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% NaDF to the basal diet for 60 days according to recommended dosages reported in previous studies. Results indicated that serum bactericidal activity (G3 on day 60 and G1 on day 30) and classic complement in all groups (on day 60) (G1 and G2 on day 30) were significantly elevated (P < 0.05). The serum lysozyme, glucose, globulin, and albumin levels showed no significant differences between all groups compared to the control group (P > 0.05). On days 30 and 60 of the sampling, no significant difference was observed in the amount of superoxide disotase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) between the treatments (P > 0.05) but activity of malondialdehyde (MDA) was lower in G1 than the control (P < 0.05). The expression of the immune-regulating genes IL-10, IL-1ß, GTP, FATP, and IGF was significantly improved in all probiotic + acidifier-treated groups (P < 0.05). The current findings showed that mixture of Bio-Aqua® and NaDF (1.5% + pro) is beneficial, as it effectively improves some immune parameters and expression of immunological and growth-related genes in Caspian brown trout.

Astaxanthin (Ast) has been shown to be beneficial for the antioxidant capacity, immune system, and stress tolerance of fish. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of Ast on the antioxidant capacity and intestinal microbiota of tsinling lenok trout. We formulated four diets with 0 (CT), 50 (A50), 100 (A100), and 150 (A150) mg/kg Ast. The results showed that Ast increased total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), lysozyme (LZM), and catalase (CAT) activities. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content was lower in A150 and A100 than in CT (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the activities of acid phosphatase (ACP) were higher in A100 and A150 than in CT (P < 0.05). We harvested the midgut and applied next-generation sequencing of 16S rDNA. Compared to the control group, the Ast group had a greater abundance of Halomonas. Functional analysis showed that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation was significantly higher with Ast, while novobiocin biosynthesis and C5-branched dibasic acid metabolism were significantly lower with Ast. In conclusion, Ast could enhance the antioxidant capacity, non-specific immunity, and intestinal health of tsinling lenok trout.

The effects of astaxanthin on growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, antioxidant capacity, immune ability, resistance to Vibrio harveyi infection of coral trout (Plectropomus leopardus, initial weight 17.44 ± 0.05 g) were studied by 8-week feeding trial. Four iso-nitrogenous and iso-lipidic experimental diets containing astaxanthin 0 (A0), 0.05 (A1), 0.1 (A2) and 0.2 (A3) g/kg were formulated with the addition of Haematococcus pluvialis powder (astaxanthin content accounts for 100 g/kg) of 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 g/kg, separately. The feeding experiment lasted for 56 days, and it was found that supplementing the diet with astaxanthin-rich H. pluvialis powder had no significant impact on the growth performance about coral trout (P > 0.05). Compared with the A0 group, the activities of amylase, lipase, and trypsin in the liver of the A2 group was dramatically increased (P < 0.05); catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) level in serum and liver were dramatically higher in the A2 group before as well as after the challenge (P < 0.05); after the challenge, the acid phosphatase (ACP) and lysozyme (LZ) activities, and complement (C3 and C4) contents in serum and liver were significantly raised for the A2 group (P < 0.05); the liver relative expressions of copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (sod-1), manganese superoxide dismutase (sod-2), cat, acp6, akp, lz-c, immunoglobulin M (igm), c3, and c4-b in the A2 group were significantly up-regulated before and after the challenge (P < 0.05); the rate of survival follow V. harveyi challenge in the group A2 was dramatically higher (P < 0.05). In summary, this study indicated that adding 1.0 g/kg astaxanthin-rich H. pluvialis powder (the content of astaxanthin is 0.091 g/kg) could improve the digestive enzyme activity, antioxidant capacity, immunity, and the ability to resist the challenge of V. harveyi in coral trout.

Many international guidance documents for deriving water quality guideline values recommend the use of chronic toxicity data. For the tropical fish northern trout gudgeon, Mogurnda mogurnda, 96-h acute and 28-d chronic toxicity tests have been developed, but both tests have drawbacks. The 96-h toxicity test is acute and has a lethal endpoint; hence it is not a preferred method for guideline value derivation. The 28-d method has a sublethal (growth) endpoint, but is highly resource intensive and is high risk in terms of not meeting quality control criteria. The present study aimed to determine the feasibility of a 7-d larval growth toxicity test as an alternative to the 96-h survival and 28-d growth tests. Once the method was successfully developed, derived toxicity estimates for uranium, magnesium, and manganese were compared with those for other endpoints and tests lengths within the literature. As a final validation of the 7-d method, the sensitivity of the 7-d growth endpoint was compared with those of 14-, 21-, and 28-d exposures. Fish growth rate, based on length, over 7 d was significantly more sensitive compared with existing acute toxicity endpoints for magnesium and manganese, and was similarly sensitive to existing chronic toxicity endpoints for uranium. For uranium, the sensitivity of the growth endpoint over the 4 exposure periods was similar, suggesting that 7 d as an exposure duration is sufficient to provide an indication of longer term chronic growth effects. The sensitivity of the 7-d method, across the 3 metals tested, highlights the benefit of utilizing the highly reliable short-term 7-d chronic toxicity test method in future toxicity testing using M. mogurnda. Dyslipidemia is one of the most important cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (FAs), and especially omega-3 FAs, could significantly contribute to the management of dyslipidemia and the prevention of CVD. The anti-hyperlipidemic effect of selected fish oils (eel, sardine, trout, cod liver) was comparatively evaluated in a high fat diet (HFD)-fed mouse model. At the end of 30 days on the HFD, all animals were hyperlipidemic and were switched to a diet consisting of 90% standard rodent chow plus 10% of oil from eel, sardine, cod liver, or trout. At the end of 60 days on these diets, blood glucose, total blood cholesterol, triglycerides (TGs), and high density lipoprotein (HDL) were quantitated. All diets, except sardine and standard rodent chow, showed statistically significant decreases in blood glucose from day 30 to 90. Total blood cholesterol decreased in all diets except the HFD group, which was continued on this diet until the end of the study. Eel and cod liver oil diets showed significant decreases in TGs. All dietary groups showed a decrease in HDL, but only the trout and standard chow groups exhibited statistically significant decreases. The fish oils tested here for effects on hyperlipidemia vary in per cent of omega-3 FAs and omega-6/-3 FA ratios as determined by gas chromatography Overall, smoked eel was the best source of omega-3 FA, with a balance of omega-6 FA, that ameliorated HFD-induced mixed hyperlipidemia.

Vitamin E is one of the most powerful antioxidants for prevention of cell damage resulting from cryopreservation, but its efficacy for cryopreserving brown trout sperm is still unclear. In this work, the protective effect of vitamin E on quality, fertilizing capacity, and DNA damage of brown trout (Salmo trutta macrostigma) sperm after cryopreservation was evaluated. Sperm samples were diluted at the ratio of 1:10 with three different extenders (E): (E-I): 300 mM glucose, 10% egg yolk; (E-II): 33.3 mM glucose, 5.1 mM NaCl, 0.5 mM NaHCO3,, 15% DMA; and (E-III): 61.6 mM NaCl, 134.2 mM KCl, 1.9 mM CaCl2, 0.8 mM MgCl2, 2.3 mM NaHCO3 in distilled water. Each extender was supplemented with 10% DMSO and different concentrations of vitamin E at 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mM. Spermatozoa frozen without vitamin E (0 mM, control) and fresh sperm were also used. After dilution, the sperm was aspirated into 0.25 mL straws, frozen 3 cm above the liquid nitrogen (LN2) surface, and plunged into the LN2. Cell motility, viability, fertilization, and eyeing were determined in post-thawed samples. DNA damage was determined by the comet assay after cryopreservation. Supplementation of 1 mM vitamin E to all extenders exhibited the best cryoprotective effect in terms of sperm motility, duration of motility, viability, fertility, and DNA integrity against cryopreservation damage, compared with 0.1, 0.5, and control group (0 mM) (p < 0.05). The highest post-thaw motility (62.4% ± 0.36%), fertilization (48.2 ± 0.84), and the lowest DNA damage (7.245%) were obtained with the extender-II including 1.0 mM vitamin E (p < 0.05). Consequently, vitamin E positively affected the motility parameters, fertility, and DNA integrity, and the results suggest the addition of extenders with vitamin E as an antioxidant for the cryopreservation of brown trout sperm.

Soybeans are one of the most used alternative dietary ingredients in aquafeeds. However, they contain phytoestrogens like genistein (GE), which can have an impact on fish metabolism and health. This study aimed to investigate the in vitro and in vivo effects of GE on lipid metabolism, apoptosis, and autophagy in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Primary cultured preadipocytes were incubated with GE at different concentrations, 10 or 100 µM, and 1 µM 17ß-estradiol (E2). Furthermore, juveniles received an intraperitoneal injection of GE at 5 or 50 µg/g body weight, or E2 at 5 µg/g. In vitro, GE 100 µM increased lipid accumulation and reduced cell viability, apparently involving an autophagic process, indicated by the higher LC3-II protein levels, and higher lc3b and cathepsin d transcript levels achieved after GE 10 µM. In vivo, GE 50 µg/g upregulated the gene expression of fatty acid synthase (fas) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase in adipose tissue, suggesting enhanced lipogenesis, whereas it increased hormone-sensitive lipase in liver, indicating a lipolytic response. Besides, autophagy-related genes increased in the tissues analyzed mainly after GE 50 µg/g treatment. Overall, these findings suggest that an elevated GE administration could lead to impaired adipocyte viability and lipid metabolism dysregulation in rainbow trout.

In this study, characteristics of effluents from three flow-through rainbow trout farms in Turkey and their impact on water quality and epilithic algal communities of the receiving stream were investigated. Water samples were taken monthly from both inlets and outlets of three fish farms, while both water and epilithic algae samples were collected from two stations (upstream and downstream) in the stream. A significant increase from inlets to outlets was observed for chemical oxygen demand (COD), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total suspended solids (TSS), NH4-N and total phosphorus (TP) (p < 0.05) due to no effluent treatment processes and high FCR at the fish farms. The daily average total nitrogen (TN) and TP fluxes of the fish farms predicted with the nutritional method were found close to those measured with the hydrological method. Although there were significant increases in COD, TSS, NH4-N, TN, NO3-N, NO2-N, TP and SRP concentrations at the downstream station compared to the upstream station of the receiving stream (p < 0.05), water quality of the downstream station remained in Class I in terms of examined parameters. Trophic Diatomic Index and Biological Diatom Index values indicated that the upstream station had a better water quality than the downstream station. Also, filamentous algae such as Cladophora glomerata, Ulothrix zonata and Stigeoclonium lubricum were observed at the downstream station. In view of the above findings, several suggestions were put forward to protect the water quality of the receiving stream.

This study focused on identifying the rotenoids from the Tephrosia vogelli plant (fish-poison-bean), investigating the toxic potency of a crude T. vogelii extract and individual rotenoids (tephrosin, deguelin and rotenone) in vitro and in vivo and assessing the mode of action. A trout (Onychorynhis mykiss) gill epithelial cell line (RTgill-W1) was used to determine the cytotoxicity of rotenoids and effects on cell metabolism. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) aged from 3 h post fertilization (hpf) to 72 hpf were used for testing the developmental toxicity. The crude T. vogelii plant extract significantly decreased the cellular metabolic activity and was cytotoxic at lower concentrations (5 and 10 nM, respectively), while tephrosin, deguelin and rotenone showed these effects at concentrations ≥ 50 nM. The crude T. Vogelli extract had the highest toxic potency and induced adverse health effects in zebrafish including deformities and mortality at the lowest concentration (5 nM) compared to rotenone (10 nM) and deguelin and tephrosin (50 nM). These results indicate that the crude T. Vogelii extracts are highly potent and the bioactivity of these extracts warrant further investigation for their potential use to treat parasites in human and veterinary medicine and as a natural alternative to pesticides.

In this study, juvenile Manchurian trout, Brachymystax lenok (initial weight: 6.43 ± 0.02 g, mean ± SE) were received for nine weeks with five types of diets prepared by gradually replacing the proportion of fish oil (FO) with linseed oil (LO) from 0% (LO0) to 25% (LO25), 50% (LO50), 75% (LO75), and 100% (LO100). The eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) composition decreased with increasing inclusion level of LO (P < 0.05). With increasing LO inclusion level, triglyceride (TAG) content of serum increased significantly, however, there was a decrease in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) (P < 0.05). LO substitution of FO up-regulated the gene expression level of lipid metabolism-related genes Fatty Acid Desaturases 6 (FAD6), Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase (ACCα), Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Protein 1 (SREBP-1), and Sterol O- Acyl Transferase 2 (SOAT2), and down-regulated the gene expression level of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor a (PPARα) (P < 0.05). The SOD activities of both serum and liver in LO100 were significantly lower than in LO25 (P < 0.05). The CAT activity of the liver in LO100 was significantly lower than in LO0 and LO25 (P < 0.05). This study indicates that the Manchurian trout may have the ability to synthesize LC-PUFAs from ALA, and an appropriate LO in substitution of FO (<75%) could improve both the lipid metabolism and the oxidation resistance.

A feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary soybean lecithin (SBL) supplementation on performance, hemato-immunological parameters, lipid biochemistry, antioxidant status, digestive enzymes activity and intestinal histomorphometry of Caspian brown trout, Salmo trutta caspius in the pre-spawning stage. The basal diet was supplemented with 0% (control), 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% of SBL to obtain five experimental diets. Fish with an average weight of 350 ±â€¯10 g were randomly distributed among five experimental groups and fed for 90 days. Dietary SBL resulted in better performance including specific growth rate (SGR), weight gain (WG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (p < 0.05). Among the different hemato-immunological parameters, white blood cell counts (WBC), lysozyme, alternative complement activity (ACH50) and total immunoglobulin (IgM) content of serum were significantly increased with dietary SBL inclusion (p < 0.05). For antioxidant enzymes, glutathione S-transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) showed significant differences among various experimental diets (p < 0.05). Furthermore, digestive enzymes activity including alkaline protease, lipase and amylase were increased in those fish received SBL supplemented diets (p < 0.05). Our results revealed that the dietary SBL improved some physiological responses of the fish and indicate 6-9% dietary SBL supplementation would improve the physiological competence of the pre-spawning Caspian brown trout breeders.

Salmonid resources currently foster socioeconomic prosperity in several nations, yet their importance to many ancient circumpolar societies is poorly understood due to insufficient fish bone preservation at archaeological sites. As a result, there are serious gaps in our knowledge concerning the antiquity of northern salmonid fisheries and their impacts on shaping biodiversity, hunter-gatherer adaptations, and human-ecological networks. The interdisciplinary study presented here demonstrates that calcium-magnesium phosphate minerals formed in burned salmonid bones can preserve at ancient northern sites, thus informing on the early utilization of these resources despite the absence of morphologically classifiable bones. The minerals whitlockite and beta magnesium tricalcium phosphate were identified in rare morphologically classifiable Atlantic salmonid bones from three Mid-Holocene sites in Finland. Large amounts of beta magnesium tricalcium phosphate were also experimentally formed by burning modern Atlantic salmonid and brown trout bones. Our results demonstrate the value of these minerals as proxies for ancient northern salmonid fishing. Specifically, the whitlockite mineral was discovered in hearth sediments from the 5,600 year old Yli-Ii Kierikinkangas site on the Iijoki River in northern Finland. Our fine sieving and mineralogical analyses of these sediments, along with zooarchaeological identification of recovered bone fragments, have confirmed for the first time that the people living at this village did incorporate salmonids into their economies, thus providing new evidence for early estuary/riverine fisheries in northern Finland.

We hypothesize that cholecystokinin (CCK) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) are involved in the modulation of metabolic regulation of food intake by fatty acids in fish. Therefore, we assessed in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) the effects of intracerebroventricular treatment with 1 ng/g of CCK-8 and with 2 ng/g of GLP-1 on food intake, expression of neuropeptides involved in food intake control and the activity of fatty acid-sensing systems in hypothalamus and hindbrain. Food intake decreased up to 24 h post-treatment to 49.8-72.3% and 3.1-17.8% for CCK-8 and GLP-1, respectively. These anorectic responses are associated with changes in fatty acid metabolism and an activation of fatty acid-sensing mechanisms in the hypothalamus and hindbrain. These changes occurred in parallel with those in the expression of anorexigenic and orexigenic peptides. Moreover, we observed that the activation of fatty acid sensing and the enhanced anorectic potential elicited by CCK-8 and GLP-1 treatments occurred in parallel with the activation of mTOR and FoxO1 and the inhibition of AMPKα, BSX and CREB. The results are discussed in the context of metabolic regulation of food intake in fish.

There is hardly any study on environmental impacts of uranium exploration and mining development prior to actual mining activities. Rather, the majority of the literature addresses the environmental impacts of either ongoing or decommissioned mines. The objective of the study was to measure the possible radioactive contamination (total uranium and lead) in the local ecosystem surrounding an abandoned uranium development site on indigenous land in Labrador (Canada). Water (brook and ponds), soil/sediments (brook and ponds), plants (growing along the brook and pond shores), and local fish (trout) and clams from bays were collected from mine development site, downstream, and control sites. Uranium and lead mobilization in the local environment appears to be slightly enhanced near the proposed mining site, but rapidly drops downstream. Developing a low-cost, community-based environmental health monitoring tool is an ideal strategy for generating baseline information and further follow-up.

This study investigates the replacement of vegetable oil (VO) in aquaculture feed for Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) with oil produced by the oleaginous yeast Lipomyces starkeyi grown in lignocellulose (wheat straw) hydrolysate. VO is extensively used to partially replace fish oil in aquaculture feed, which can be seen as non-sustainable. VO itself is becoming a limited resource. Plant oils are used in many different applications, including food, feed and biodiesel. Its replacement in non-food applications is desirable. For this purpose, yeast cells containing 43% lipids per g dry weight were mechanically disrupted and incorporated into the fish feed. There were no significant differences in this pilot study, regarding weight and length gain, feed conversion ratio, specific growth rate, condition factor and hepatosomatic index between the control and the yeast oil fed group. Fatty and amino acid composition of diet from both groups was comparable. Our results in fish demonstrate that it is possible to replace VO by yeast oil produced from lignocellulose, which may broaden the range of raw materials for food production and add value to residual products of agriculture and forestry.

Unconventional natural gas drilling and the use of hydraulic fracturing technology have expanded rapidly in North America. This expansion has raised concerns of surface water contamination by way of spills and leaks, which may be sporadic, small, and therefore difficult to detect. Here we explore the use of otolith microchemistry as a tool for monitoring surface water contamination from generated waters (GW) of unconventional natural gas drilling. We exposed Brook Trout in the laboratory to three volumetric concentrations of surrogate generated water (SGW) representing GW on day five of drilling. Transects across otolith cross-sections were analyzed for a suite of elements by LA-ICP-MS. Brook Trout exposed to a 0.01-1.0% concentration of SGW for 2, 15, and 30 days showed a significant (p < 0.05) relationship of increasing Sr and Ba concentrations in all but one treatment. Analyses indicate lesser concentrations than used in this experiment could be detectable in surface waters and provide support for the use of this technique in natural habitats. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of how trace elements in fish otoliths may be used to monitor for surface water contamination from GW.

Offspring of wild adult brown trout exposed to a range of Se concentrations were reared in a laboratory setting to primarily assess effects on survival and deformities. Maternal whole-body Se concentrations ranged from 4.7 to 22.6 mg/kg dry weight for wild fish. Corresponding Se concentrations in embryos ranged from 6.2 to 40.3 mg/kg dry weight. Significant relationships were found between embryo and whole-body tissue concentrations. Increasing egg Se concentrations were correlated with decreasing survival; however, hatch success was not significantly correlated with increasing embryo Se. The best fit effect concentration, 10% (EC10) for survival in the hatch to swim-up period was 20.6 mg/kg dry weight, and the EC10 for hatch to test termination at 88 d was 20.5 mg/kg dry weight egg Se. The best fit model for deformities was based on a baseline-adjusted severity index and resulted in an EC10 of 21.8 mg/kg dry weight egg Se. Both the best fit model EC10s represent more sensitive values than the published range of trout species EC10s. An egg to whole-body tissue conversion factor derived from the paired data resulted in a conversion factor for brown trout of 1.46, which resulted in a whole-body tissue EC10 of 14.04 mg/kg dry weight at an egg tissue EC10 of 20.5 mg/kg dry weight. Evolutionary ecologists seek to explain the processes that maintain variation within populations. In plants, petal color variation can affect pollinator visitation, environmental tolerance, and herbivore deterrence. Variation in sexual organs may similarly affect plant performance. Within-population variation in pollen color, as occurs in the eastern North American spring ephemeral Erythronium americanum, provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the maintenance of variation in this trait. Although the red/yellow pollen-color polymorphism of E. americanum is widely recognized, it has been poorly documented. Our goals were thus (1) to determine the geographic distribution of the color morphs and (2) to test the effects of pollen color on components of pollen performance. Data provided by citizen scientists indicated that populations range from monomorphic red, to polymorphic, to monomorphic yellow, but there was no detectable geographic pattern in morph distribution, suggesting morph occurrence cannot be explained by a broad-scale ecological cline. In field experiments, we found no effect of pollen color on the probability of predation by the pollen-feeding beetle Asclera ruficollis, on the ability of pollen to tolerate UV-B radiation, or on siring success (as measured by the fruit set of hand-pollinated flowers). Pollinators, however, exhibited site-specific pollen-color preferences, suggesting they may act as agents of selection on this trait, and, depending on the constancy of their preferences, could contribute to the maintenance of variation. Collectively, our results eliminate some hypothesized ecological effects of pollen color in E. americanum, and identify effects of pollen color on pollinator attraction as a promising direction for future investigation.

The in situ evaluation of the genotoxic impact of the Karaj River was performed using the comet and micronucleus (MN) assays in erythrocytes, liver, gill and kidney of indigenous brown trout, Salmo trutta fario from three different stations, including Varangerud, Asara and Purkan. The results showed that DNA damage significantly increased in sampled fish erythrocytes, liver and gill from low levels in the upstream river (Varangerud) via intermediate levels in downstream (Purkan) to high levels in the middle of the river (Asara), correlating with the river increasing pollution gradient. Gill was the most sensitive tissue followed by blood and liver. Kidney did not respond to the genotoxic gradient of the river. MN test (as a complementary assay) of liver cells of fish was a sensitive biomarker of genotoxic exposure. MN test in blood, gill and kidney did not reflect the genotoxic condition of the river.

Trout farms are one of the major sources of pollution of highland streams and rivers, which are very sensitive ecosystems otherwise scarcely influenced by human activities. A trout farm with low annual production was chosen for comparative monitoring of its effects on the macrozoobenthos, epilithic diatom, and potamoplankton communities in the receiving stream. Research was conducted every 2 months during a period of 1 year (one control point and three localities downstream from the farm). The fish farm discharge induced moderate alteration of environmental factors in the receiving watercourse, viz., significant increase of the ionized and un-ionized ammonia fraction, dissolved oxygen concentration, and biological oxygen demand. Species richness and Simpson's diversity index did not change in any of the communities. Correspondent analysis of potamoplankton community composition clearly showed trout farm effects, thereby indicating the need for reevaluation of saprobic valence values for potamoplankton species. The complete lack of influence of the trout farm discharge on the epilithic diatom community is probably due to absence of significant changes of phosphorus concentration in the receiving stream. Effects of the trout farm on the macrozoobenthos community were further characterized by 14 additional indices. The percentages of Chironomidae larvae, shredders, and total collectors; ratio of shredders to collectors; and the family biotic index are suggested as candidates for future multimetric index for measuring of trout farm influence.
