RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE:  The study sought to assess the level of awareness regarding osteoarthritis and its management. METHODS:  This study was cross-sectional, using data from a sample of 389 individuals from the central region of Saudi Arabia. The participants completed an online questionnaire and ensured anonymity.  Results: A total of 389 participants made up the sample for this study, which had a predominance of females (56.6%, n=220), a majority aged <50 years (66.6%, n=259), and most of them (51.7%, n=201) weighing 60-80 kg, substantial proportion lived in the Riyadh region (27.5%, n=107), with more than half (59.4%, n=231) having a university education and working in offices (28.3%, n=110). The majority (73.3%, n=285) of participants were married, and a vast majority (87.9%, n=342) were not smokers. The findings revealed that only 32.9% (n=128) of the participants had good knowledge about osteoarthritis. The study found that stiffness (80.2%, n=312) and swelling (97.9%, n = 381) are the most common signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis; the risk factors for osteoarthritis were genetic factors (79.7%, n=310) and age (91.3%, n=355). The treatment of osteoarthritis identified in the study included exercises such as swimming (85.1%, n=331), physical therapy (86.6%, n=337), and joint replacement surgery (92.0%, n=358). The study established a statistically significant association between age, education level, previous diagnosis of osteoarthritis, family history of osteoarthritis (p = 0.004, 0.001, 0.002, and 0.001, respectively), and level of knowledge about osteoarthritis. However, there was no statistically significant association between gender, marital status, smoking status, previous knee injuries, physical activity level, and the level of knowledge about osteoarthritis (p > 0.05).  Conclusion: Overall, the study revealed that 32.9% (n=128) of the participants had good knowledge about osteoarthritis. Participants aged 50-60 years, those with a university and post-graduate level of education, as well as those who had a previous diagnosis of osteoarthritis and those with a family history of osteoarthritis, had greater and better knowledge and awareness about osteoarthritis. Joint stiffness and swelling were identified, as the most common signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis. The risk factors identified in the study were genetic factors and age, while the treatment options noted by the study were exercise, such as swimming, physical therapy, and joint replacement surgery. The study notes the need for enhanced public awareness of the problems associated with osteoarthritis among the Saudi Arabian population.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Motivation is the process whereby goal-directed activities are initiated and sustained. Motivation is a crucial factor in academic achievement. The study aims to measure students' demographic factors and external environments' effect on their motivation and determine the impact of students' motivation and self-efficacy on their learning engagement and academic performance. METHODOLOGY: This is a cross-sectional study that involved distributing an online digital questionnaire, which was applied in the capital of Saudi Arabia, "Riyadh." The students' motivation was assessed using three scales that are designed to measure the students' intrinsic/extrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, and learning engagement. RESULTS: In this study, we collected 429 responses from our distributed questionnaire among medical students where males represented 60.1% of the sample. Moreover, we classified the satisfaction level into five subcategories: very satisfied, satisfied, neutral, unsatisfied, and very unsatisfied. We found that most of the students (38.7%) were satisfied with their academic performance, while 17.7% were strongly satisfied. The mean enrollment motivation score in this study was 19.83 (SD 2.69), and when determining its subcategories, we found that the mean intrinsic motivation score was 10.33 (out of 12) and the mean extrinsic motivation score was 10.23 (out of 12). Moreover, the mean self-efficacy score was 9.61 and the mean learning engagement score was 8.97 (out of 12). Moreover, we found that a longer duration needed by the students to reach the college from their residence is significantly associated with lower learning engagement reported by the students (8.54 vs. 9.13 in shorter times, P=0.034). Finally, we found that students who entered medical school as their first choice had significantly higher intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, and learning engagement. CONCLUSION: A student's preference for entering medical school will affect their motivation, self-efficacy, and learning engagement. Moreover, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations significantly correlate with self-efficacy and satisfaction with academic performance; however, they have no effect on the grade point average (GPA) of the last semester. The only factor that positively correlates with students' GPA is learning engagement.

RESUMEN

Epistaxis, commonly known as nasal bleeding, ranks among the most prevalent emergencies encountered in otorhinolaryngology. The etiology of epistaxis is multifaceted, arising from both local and systemic factors. In Saudi Arabia, a country with a relatively high prevalence of epistaxis, understanding the level of awareness and attitudes toward first aid management of epistaxis is of paramount importance. This systematic review aims to bridge this knowledge gap by evaluating the awareness of and attitudes toward epistaxis first aid in Saudi Arabia. This systematic review and meta-analysis adhered to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. A comprehensive electronic search was executed across PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases, encompassing studies published between January 2015 and July 2023. The study included exclusively cross-sectional studies, assessing awareness and attitude toward epistaxis first aid in Saudi Arabia across all populations and studies in English. The 17 selected studies were all published after October 2017, with three published in the year of this systematic review (2023). Sample sizes exhibited substantial variability, ranging from 57 to 2,441 individuals. Despite widespread awareness of epistaxis, the general population often disregards it as a minor health issue. This discrepancy highlights the importance of addressing epistaxis seriously, given the potential for severe bleeding as a medical emergency. The review of 17 studies revealed significant variations in epistaxis awareness levels, influenced by factors such as age, gender, and varying sample sizes. Notably, higher awareness levels were observed in studies involving the general Saudi population and those employing self-administered questionnaires. The average awareness and knowledge of epistaxis and its management among Saudi residents were moderate, with an estimated awareness level of 63%. A large-scale epidemiological survey, considering sociodemographic factors, is recommended to provide a more comprehensive understanding of epistaxis awareness.

RESUMEN

Objective We aim to evaluate the prevalence and impact of allergic rhinitis comorbidity in asthmatic patients in the Qassim region and identify whether rhinitis affects asthma control. Methods This is an observational cross-sectional study on asthmatic adults who live in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. An online questionnaire was distributed through social media. The questionnaire is composed of the validated Arabic versions of the Score for Allergic Rhinitis (SFAR) questionnaire, the Allergic Rhinitis and Its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines, and the Asthma Control Test (ACT) questionnaire. Results The total number of participants was 380; however, after 98 were excluded, 282 asthmatic patients were included in this study. Of them, 33% had allergic rhinitis. Females constitute 67% of the study participants, while males comprise 33%. The findings of the study indicate that there is a significant association between allergic rhinitis and asthma control in the Qassim region. Symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and nasal obstruction are significantly associated with poor asthma control (p = 0.006). Having a known family history of asthma, eczema, or allergic rhinitis is significantly associated with worse asthma control (0.004). Conclusion In summary, this study found a high prevalence of rhinitis symptoms comorbidity in asthmatic patients in the Qassim region. Overall, the study established the existence of a relationship between allergic rhinitis and asthmatic control. Symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, and nasal obstruction are significantly associated with allergic rhinitis and asthmatic symptoms. However, there is no significant association between nose problems that occur in specific seasons or months and allergic rhinitis and asthmatic symptoms, suggesting that seasonality may not have a strong impact on asthma control. House dust mite allergies have a borderline significant association with allergic rhinitis and asthmatic symptoms. Having a family history of asthma, eczema, or allergic rhinitis is associated with allergic rhinitis and asthmatic symptoms, thereby indicating a significant impact on asthma control.

RESUMEN

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a commonly found global functional pathology with no detectable structural changes. It affects the quality of life and often coexists with psychiatric and somatic issues. We reviewed all articles published between 1990 and April 2023. The databases used for the data search were Google Scholar, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and PubMed/MEDLINE. Ovid search engine was also used to broaden the search strategy. Predefined keywords, including "Irritable bowel syndrome" (MeSH) OR "IBS" (all fields), along with "Saudi Arabia" and "Middle East," were used to avoid data loss and ambiguity. Any cross-sectional study that reported the prevalence of IBS in any gender, age, and group of the Saudi population was included. Data extraction was independently performed in duplicate to mitigate bias and data loss. Statistical analysis of proportion was conducted by using Miller (Freeman-Tukey double arcsine - exact inverse). Out of 350 records identified, only 38 studies were included in the quantitative synthesis. The total number of study participants was 26,567, on the basis of the predefined inclusion criteria of the study. StatsDirect software was used for the statistical analysis of the study parameters. Based on all 38 identified studies, the calculated pooled prevalence was 20.7% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 17.8% to 23.7% by applying random effects (DerSimonian-Laird method). IBS was identified in 21% (95% CI = 16.7% to 25.7%) of the general population, 22% (95% CI = 17.6% to 26.7%) of students, and 18.3% (95% CI = 13.3% to 23.9%) of healthcare workers. The pooled prevalence of IBS among the Saudi population was 20.7%. The pathophysiology of IBS is complexed and significantly affected by genetics, diet, cultural characteristics, age, anxiety, depression, stress, and sleep disorders. This study fills a gap in understanding IBS prevalence in Saudi Arabia, contributing valuable data to this region.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the perception, awareness, and practices related to burn first aid among the general population in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS:  This is an observational, cross-sectional study that assesses perception, awareness, and practices related to burn first aid among the general population in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. The data was collected using questionnaires. The data was initially filtered and checked for completeness to rectify any errors or discrepancies. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0 (IBM SPSS Statistics, Armonk, NY, USA) was used for data analysis. The data was coded before entry into the software program. Descriptive statistics were applied, summarizing the data in terms of frequency and percentage. Chi-square tests were used for analyzing categorical variables and to determine the association between the groups, with significance set at a P-value of 0.05. RESULTS:  Of the participants, 72.8% had previous knowledge regarding burns' first aid management. Furthermore, 3% obtained knowledge and information about burn first aid from a certified course, while 21.1% obtained the information from the Internet. Of the respondents, 77.8% indicated that during the exposure to burn, they would remove accessories and clothes that covered the injured area. Of them, 79.4% noted that they would apply water to the injured area in case of exposure to burns. In addition, 61.9% of the respondents used honey as a home remedy to treat burns, and 30.1% used toothpaste to treat burns. CONCLUSION: Of the general population in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia, 72.8% had basic knowledge regarding burns' first aid management. The study found certified courses and the Internet to be the main sources of information and knowledge about burns' first aid management. The study found that clothes and accessories that covered the injured area should be removed when exposed to burns. In addition, cold water should be applied for a period of at least 10 minutes. The study found honey and toothpaste to be the most common home remedies used to treat burns. The use of pure honey is an accepted intervention in the treatment of burns due to its benefit in stimulating the rapid regeneration of tissues and decreasing incidences of scar formation. However, there are wrong beliefs about the use of toothpaste in cases of burns because it exacerbates the initial injury, making it even worse. There are significant differences in the perception, awareness, and practice of the general population according to their education level (P-value = 0.003) and employment (P-value = 0.007).

RESUMEN

The objective of this systematic review was to determine the prevalence of hallux valgus (HV) in the general population by conducting a review and meta-analysis of existing studies. Published articles on the incidence of HV were systematically searched and evaluated on reputable medical databases such as PubMed. The keywords "the prevalence of hallux valgus and/or bunions"were used to create the search syntax on the various databases. Data were gathered on prevalence, population under study, and methodology. A total of 11 articles that met the search criteria were identified and included in this review for a total of 10,886 participants across the studies. The pooled prevalence of HV across the studies was3.75 (95% confidence interval = 0.388-0.517). Therefore, the prevalence varied widely across the studies reviewed. Prevalence was observed to be high among females and increased with risk factors such as body mass index, which were identified as significant across the studies. This review was limited by insufficient data and the lack of a standard HV diagnosis method. Therefore, a standard HV diagnosis tool is recommended.

RESUMEN

Introduction Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is the most common congenital disability in newborns. The condition can range from a slight laxity in the hip joint to secondary femoral head injury, early osteoarthritis (OA), and mobility issues. There are several risk factors for DDH, including positive family history, female sex, breech presentation, and the presence of clubfoot. Early detection and treatment are crucial to avoid long-term hip dysplasia and arthritis, which can cause difficulty in walking and discomfort. Breech presentation, in particular, is a significant risk factor for DDH, with spontaneous vaginal birth increasing the risk of hip pathology and instability compared to elective Caesarean section. However, whether breech presentation continues to be a risk factor for DDH in preterm children is unknown. Objective and methods This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of breech presentation and other gestational/delivery characteristics among newborns diagnosed with DDH. This retrospective study was conducted at Abha Maternity and Children Hospital, Abha, Saudi Arabia, over a period of six months. Data were collected from medical records of DDH cases diagnosed between 2016 and 2023. Data analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, Washington, United States) and IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22 (Released 2013; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). Descriptive statistics and statistical tests were used to analyze the data. Results Most of the diagnosed children were female (86.7%), and bilateral hip dislocation (40%) was the most common presentation. X-ray was the most common diagnostic tool (48.3%), and operative management was the most common management strategy (73.3%). A positive family history of DDH was reported in more than one-third of cases. The study also analyzed the association between complications during pregnancy and various factors such as mode of delivery, presentation at delivery, gestational age at delivery, and associated maternal diseases. The difference in complication rates between women who delivered via C-section and those who delivered vaginally was insignificant (p = 0.14). Similarly, the difference in complication rates between women with breech and cephalic presentation was not statistically significant (p = 0.094). The difference in complication rates between women who delivered preterm, at term, or post-term was also not statistically significant (p = 0.578). Furthermore, the association between complications during pregnancy and pregnancy-associated maternal diseases was not statistically significant (p = 1.00). Conclusion DDH is a significant health issue in newborns, leading to long-term mobility problems and discomfort. Positive family history of DDH is a significant risk factor. Breech presentation was not significantly associated with DDH in preterm children, and no significant associations were found between complications during pregnancy and various factors. Early detection and treatment of DDH are crucial for preventing long-term complications. Family history should be considered an important risk factor, emphasizing the need for screening programs in families with a history of DDH.

RESUMEN

Objective This study aimed to determine the awareness of stroke risk factors and warning signs among diabetic patients in the Aseer Region, Saudi Arabia. Methods We adopted a cross-sectional study involving 314 participants in the Aseer Region, Saudi Arabia between February 27, 2023, and April 20, 2023. The target population was diabetic patients whose database was obtained from various health institutions. The questionnaire was then distributed to the respondents after obtaining informed consent. The data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics version 27.0.1.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) to obtain important insights. Results The majority of the respondents (69.11%) demonstrated a good level of knowledge, while 30.89% had poor knowledge. A good proportion of the respondents (68.47%) knew about stroke, while 73.89% knew it primarily affects the brain. Most respondents claimed that elderly people were at higher risk of attack (52.55%) and that the younger population was also prone to stroke (64.97%). The respondents identified hypertension (74.52%), smoking (72.61%), diabetes (71.66%), and high blood cholesterol (68.47%) as the main risk factors for stroke. The participants also demonstrated a very good understanding of the warning signs, with difficulty speaking (80.57%) and the weakness or inability to move one-half of the body (85.35%) being the most common signs. Conclusion The findings in this study indicated a good level of understanding and awareness of stroke, its risk factors, and warning signs (69.11%). The older respondents and people with a higher level of education demonstrated more knowledge. The two variables, age and education, had a statistically significant relationship with the knowledge of stroke. The common risk factors associated with stroke were identified as hypertension, smoking, diabetes, and high blood cholesterol. The respondents demonstrated good knowledge of the warning signs, with the vast majority asserting that difficulty in speaking, decreased sensation, and weakness or inability to move one-half of the body are common warning signs.

RESUMEN

Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis worldwide and is characterized by the gradual loss of joint cartilage, leading to stiffness, discomfort, and restricted movement. This research aims to assess the knowledge of obese women in the Aseer region regarding OA and its associated risk factors. OA predominantly affects the knees, hands, and hips, with knee OA being particularly significant due to its high incidence rate and early onset in obese women. In Saudi Arabia, there are varying levels of awareness among the population, but no study has focused on obese females. This study seeks to address this gap and enhance the understanding of OA in this demographic. Methodology A cross-sectional research design was employed using a self-administrated questionnaire collected by a group of trained data collectors who distributed the questionnaires throughout the clinics of Aseer central hospital. The questionnaire was divided into two sections. The first section collected demographic data about the participants, and the second section was a 20-item questionnaire about OA and its related risk factors. The study was conducted in the Aseer region. A total of 278 subjects (female) were included in the study. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 27.0.1.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results This study analyzed the sociodemographic characteristics of 278 participants. All participants were female, were young to middle-aged adults, and had a collegiate education. On average, participants were overweight, with varying knowledge levels about OA. While some correctly identified symptoms and risk factors. Many participants responded with "I Don't Know" regarding joint stiffness as a symptom (37.7%). Comparing knowledge among different body mass index groups revealed no significant differences, except for misconceptions about the cause of OA among overweight individuals (39.06%). Conclusions This study's findings underscore the practical implications for patient education and healthcare strategies. The varying levels of awareness among obese women in the Aseer region regarding OA emphasize the need for increased education and targeted health promotion interventions. Addressing misconceptions and improving knowledge can enhance treatment plans and contribute to better patient outcomes. Understanding these knowledge gaps is crucial for improving patient education, healthcare strategies, and OA management.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE:  The objective of this study was to evaluate the awareness and practice of Najran University students toward common problems related to the ear, nose, and throat. METHODS:  A cross-sectional study was utilized in this research, employing data from a sample of 429 students at Najran University. The participants completed a self-administered questionnaire and ensured anonymity. The questionnaire used in this study had been previously validated. RESULTS:  The sample for the current study primarily consisted of students aged more than 20 years (84.1%; n = 361), with a predominance of females (69.0%; n = 296). The majority of them were in health colleges (45.2%; n=194). The study results show that 37.8% (n = 162) had a good knowledge level, while 62.2% (n = 267) had poor knowledge about problems related to ENT. The vast majority, 87.2% (n = 374), believed that going to the hospital was the appropriate action to take in cases of acute ENT problems. The results established a statistically significant association between age, gender, health college, college, and department with p-values <0.005 (0.002*, 0.001*, 0.003*, and 0.005*), respectively, and the level of knowledge about problems related to ENT. There was no statistically significant association between nationality, clinical history of the participants, and the level of knowledge about problems related to ENT (p > 0.005). CONCLUSION:  The study revealed that 37.8% of the participants had good knowledge about problems related to the ears, nose, and throat. The participants older than 20 years had better knowledge of common ENT problems than those younger than 20 years. Female participants showed a higher level of knowledge and awareness of problems related to the ears, nose, and throat. The study noted that the participants in Health College, the faculty of medicine, and the third academic level had good knowledge about problems related to ENT. The study established that going to the hospital was the appropriate action to be taken in case of a sudden ENT problem. Therefore, we recommend concerted efforts be made among the medical community to increase knowledge about common ENT problems.

RESUMEN

Friendships can positively impact students' academic performance and grade point average (GPA) by providing emotional support and reducing stress, thereby leading to improved focus and better concentration on studies. Peer connections and friendships often result in collaborative learning and the exchange of academic ideas, improving comprehension and retention of course materials, ultimately leading to higher GPAs. In contrast, negative friendships or excessive social distractions can adversely affect GPA, which highlights the importance of striking a fine balance between social connections and academic responsibilities. This systematic review and meta-analysis adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. It involved a thorough electronic search on PubMed, Ebsco, and Web of Science databases with no time restrictions. We considered studies from various parts of the world, which examined friendships and relations within the academic setting. This review delved into the substantial impact of friendships in academic settings. Friendships foster a supportive environment for collaboration and knowledge-sharing, ultimately enhancing motivation, reducing stress, and improving GPA, thereby contributing to a successful academic experience. While disparities were noted across studies due to geographical variations, study designs, and outcome measures, the majority of them revealed a positive correlation between friendship and academic performance. Some studies highlighted gender-related differences, with male friendships often proving beneficial for academic performance, though this is not a universal rule, as the quality of friendships mostly depends on compatibility rather than gender. To sum up, the extensive review of research underscores the pivotal role of friendships in academic settings, which act as crucial support systems for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and motivation among students, leading to enhanced academic performance. Despite regional and methodological variations, a consistent positive correlation between friendship and academic success was observed across diverse studies.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate public practice and the level of knowledge of common otorhinolaryngology-related issues among the population of the Northern Borders region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was done in this research, employing data from 363 participants from the general population in the Northern Borders region of Saudi Arabia. The participants completed an online self-administered questionnaire and ensured anonymity. The questionnaire used in this study had been previously validated. RESULTS: Most of the respondents involved in this study were aged above 20 years (n = 326, 89.8%), and 248 had a medical background (68.3%). The study results show that 139 (38.2%) of the respondents had a good knowledge level, while 224 (61.8%) had poor knowledge about otorhinolaryngology-related issues. The results established a statistically significant association between the demographic information of age, gender, education level, and the level of knowledge about otorhinolaryngology-related issues with p-values < 0.05 (0.001, 0.003, and 0.002), respectively. There were no statistically significant association between marital status, place of residence, occupation, medical background, and the level of knowledge about otorhinolaryngology-related issues (with p > 0.05).  Conclusion: The study found that less than half of the participants had good knowledge of otorhinolaryngology; elder and female participants showed better understanding. Sociodemographic factors, such as age, gender, and education, were statistically linked to knowledge levels. The findings highlight a need for increased public awareness efforts by the medical community regarding otorhinolaryngology issues in Saudi Arabia.

RESUMEN

Background: Despite recent government efforts to control antibiotic purchase by the public, the rate of self-prescription is still alarmingly high in Saudi Arabia. Increased and inappropriate antibiotic use has been identified as an important factor behind bacterial resistance. Recently, there has been an increased interest in the Saudi public's awareness of antibiotic use and resistance. However, none of the local studies examined the awareness and practices among patients attending primary care services. Additionally, the influencing factors of awareness and practices have never been comprehensively examined. Objective: To assess the levels of knowledge, attitude, and practices of antibiotic use and their influencing factors among a sample of patients at a primary care setting. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used to examine patients attending Al Wazarat Health Center in Riyadh between 1 January 2018 and 31 March 2018. Data was collected using a structured study questionnaire which included data on socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of the participants, as well as knowledge, attitude, and practices of antibiotic use. Scores were calculated for knowledge, attitude, and practices of antibiotic use and were translated to a 100-point scale for easy interpretation. Results: The current analysis included 343 participants. The average age was 32.5 ± 10.0 years. The majority of the participants were women (63.0%), married (65.9%), and had college or higher education (57.0%). The overall antibiotic awareness level was 54.7% (including 43.9% for knowledge and 71.7% for attitude) and appropriate antibiotic practices were 68.3%. The scores of both awareness and practices were positively and significantly correlated (correlation coefficient = 0.440, P < 0.001). In addition to appropriate antibiotic practices, awareness was significantly associated with higher educational level and having children. Conclusions: The current findings indicate the need to improve awareness and understanding of the public regarding appropriate antibiotic use by targeting patients who attend primary care services with posters, structured educational sessions, and physician advice.
