RESUMEN

Obesity-associated breast cancer recurrence is mechanistically linked with elevated insulin levels and insulin resistance. Exercise and weight loss are associated with decreased breast cancer recurrence, which may be mediated through reduced insulin levels and improved insulin sensitivity. This is a secondary analysis of the WISER Survivor clinical trial examining the relative effect of exercise, weight loss and combined exercise and weight loss interventions on insulin and insulin resistance. The weight loss and combined intervention groups showed significant reductions in levels of: insulin, C-peptide, homeostatic model assessment 2 (HOMA2) insulin resistance (IR), and HOMA2 beta-cell function (ß) compared to the control group. Independent of intervention group, weight loss of ≥10% was associated with decreased levels of insulin, C-peptide, and HOMA2-IR compared to 0-5% weight loss. Further, the combination of exercise and weight loss was particularly important for breast cancer survivors with clinically abnormal levels of C-peptide.

RESUMEN

Objective. To compare the mean national enrollment rates of underrepresented minority (URM) students in a pharmacy school with mean rates in California pharmacy schools, and identify barriers faced by URM students during the application process. Methods. The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) enrollment data from 2005 to 2014 were used to compare the demographics of California pharmacy schools with the average enrollment of URM students in pharmacy schools nationally. A survey was administered to students in the 2017 and 2018 classes at Touro University California College of Pharmacy to identify common barriers that students faced in pursuing pharmacy education. Results. The average enrollment of URM in pharmacy programs nationally was 12.3% in 2005, compared to 12.4% in 2014. The average enrollment of URM in California pharmacy schools was 9.4% in 2005 compared to 8.5% in 2014. The top barriers to pursuing pharmacy education that students reported included the cost of tuition (43.4%), prerequisite requirements (36.9%), and obtaining letters of recommendation (32.3%). Conclusion. The average enrollment of URM students in pharmacy schools nationally has remained higher than that in California pharmacy schools across the years studied. California pharmacy programs should develop strategies to alleviate the barriers identified and further diversify pharmacy education.

RESUMEN

Osteoporosis leads to reduced bone mass and disrupted bone architecture. Bisphosphonates are used to treat osteoporosis by inhibiting bone resorption. Chronic bisphosphonate use has been associated with adverse effects including atypical femoral fractures (AFF). We report the case of a 63-year-old woman with a history of osteoporosis treated with alendronate, who presented with bilateral hip and groin pain. Radiography detected a chronic-appearing callus in the left hip concerning for a chronic stress fracture versus malignancy. Initial imaging could not rule out malignancy, prompting positron emission tomography (PET) and bone biopsy. PET scan was negative for malignancy and biopsy found changes consistent with chronic bisphosphonate use. This prompted prophylactic intramedullary nailing of the femur. This case highlights the importance of considering AFF in patients with a history of hip pain in the setting of chronic BPs use and reviews criteria within the literature to manage patients with AFFs.

RESUMEN

Highly faceted superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles roughly 11 nm in diameter are readily accessible in the presence of p-phosphonated calix[n]arenes of different ring sizes (n=4, 5 and 6), through the use of a simple co-precipitation technique. In contrast, the larger calix[8]arene affords spherical particles of comparable size. The maximum magnetization is 70-60 emu g-1 , which decreases with increasing size of the calixarene macrocycle, and the evidence indicates that the calixarenes bind to the surface of the nanoparticles via the phosphonate head groups rather than the phenolic oxygen centers. The stabilized nanoparticles show dual functionality: they remove up to 62 % of nitrate nitrogen and 48 % of phosphate from an aqueous effluent after 24 hours at concentrations of only 1 g L-1 of calixarene-coated nanoparticles.

RESUMEN

Composite materials based on superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles embedded in polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) are generated in a continuous flow vortex fluidic device (VFD). The same device is effective in entrapping microalgal cells within this material, such that the functional cells can be retrieved from aqueous dispersions using an external magnet.

RESUMEN

A direct seedless method for the continuous synthesis of gold nanorods has been developed using a sequential rotating tube-narrow channel processing microfluidic configuration, with the stock feed solutions (HAuCl(4)/CTAB/acetylacetone and AgNO(3)/CTAB/carbonate buffer) being stable for weeks.
