A reversion to secondary quadrupedality is exceptionally rare in nature, yet the convergent re-evolution of this locomotor style occurred at least four separate times within Dinosauria. Facultative quadrupedality, an intermediate state between obligate bipedality and obligate quadrupedality, may have been an important transitional step in this locomotor shift, and is proposed for a range of basal ornithischians and sauropodomorphs. Advances in virtual biomechanical modeling and simulation have allowed for the investigation of limb anatomy and function in a range of extinct dinosaurian species, yet this technique has not been widely applied to explore facultatively quadrupedal gait generation. This study places its focus on Scutellosaurus, a basal thyreophoran that has previously been described as both an obligate biped and a facultative quadruped. The functional anatomy of the musculoskeletal system (myology, mass properties, and joint ranges of motion) has been reconstructed using extant phylogenetic bracketing and comparative anatomical datasets. This information was used to create a multi-body dynamic locomotor simulation that demonstrates that whil quadrupedal gaits were physically possible, they did not outperform bipedal gaits is any tested metric. Scutellosaurus cannot therefore be described as an obligate biped, but we would predict its use of quadrupedality would be very rare, and perhaps restricted to specific activities such as foraging. This finding suggests that basal thyreophorans are still overwhelmingly bipedal but is perhaps indicative of an adaptive pathway for later evolution of quadrupedality.

As dreams reflect waking life, the so-called continuity hypothesis of dreaming, the literature showing that work-related stress affects dreams negatively is very plausible. As in waking life, hobbies are an important component in the work-life balance. In the present study, the work-life balance in dreams was studied. Overall, 1695 persons (960 women, 735 men; mean age: 53.84 ± 13.99 years) participated in an online survey entitled "Everyday life and dreams". The data collected refer to the pre-pandemic period. The findings indicate that hobby-related dreams are more frequent in persons who often engage in their hobbies, supporting the notion of a thematic continuity. As expected, the emotional tone of hobby-related dreams was more positive compared with dreams in general and work-related dreams in particular. Interestingly, the emotional valence of hobby-related dreams was related to the valence of general emotionality towards work in waking life, supporting the idea of an emotional continuity between waking and dreaming. The work-life balance in dreams could be defined as the difference of the percentages of work-related and hobby-related dreams; it is linked to work-related stress and the hobby frequency, factors similar to those that shift the work-life balance in waking life toward the "work" end of the spectrum.

Climate change is linked to health risks for both professional and amateur athletes. Sports organisations will need to react to these developments. The starting point for this concept paper is a summary of the sport-specific health risks currently under discussion: increasing heatwaves, growing numbers of extreme weather events, rising UV, ozone and allergen levels and the spread of infectious diseases. Based on the current state of research, a conceptual model is developed to reduce these climate-related health risks in sports at organisational level. Given the wide variety of predicted direct and indirect health risks linked to climate change, the "sports, clubs and climate change model" (SC3 model) presented here follows a stepwise risk-specific approach using technical, organisational and person-related measures. The SC3 model also includes cross-cutting measures that have an overarching effect comprising training, warning systems, coordination and evaluation measures. The SC3 model makes it possible to develop prevention plans, both at national level for central associations and at the regional level of local organisations and clubs. It can be applied to typical settings (e.g., training or competition at elite or amateur levels) and target groups (e.g., athletes, spectators, referees and club officials).

Professional work is an integral part of modern life. According to the continuity hypothesis of dreaming, which states that dreams reflect waking life, work-related dreams should be quite common. As most dream content analytic studies are carried out in student samples, the topic of work in dreams is understudied. A few small studies indicate that the stress levels associated with the job are especially reflected in work-related dreams. Here, a total of 1695 people (960 women, 735 men) completed an online survey that included questions about the estimated percentage of work-related dreams, the overall emotional tone of work-related dreams, and waking-life experiences related to their current job situation (working or not working). The findings indicate that every fifth dream is related to current or previous work. Individuals who are working dreamed more often about work, with jobs that are experienced as being more stressful being more likely to affect dream content. The emotional tone of work-related dreams was related to stress and the emotions related to work in waking life. Overall, the findings demonstrate that professional life has a profound effect on dreaming in many individuals-even after years. The next steps would be to study the dream content of work-related dreams and relate these contents to specific characteristics about the jobs, e.g., professional field, hierarchical position and autonomy, etc.

OBJECTIVES: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered as the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance (IR) is a key component of metabolic syndrome. The aim was to determine the dietary composition, physical activity, and histologic severity between NAFLD patients with and without metabolic syndrome. METHODS: Ninety-one patients with NAFLD completed the Block Food Frequency Questionnaire and the Paffenbarger Physical Activity Questionnaire. IR was assessed by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index. Metabolic syndrome was defined by the ATP III clinical definition. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) Clinical Network Scoring System was used to determine the histologic severity of NAFLD. RESULTS: Thirty-one patients (34%) had metabolic syndrome. Patients with metabolic syndrome had a higher HOMA index (7.66 vs 4.45, p = 0.04), and consumed more carbohydrates (51%vs 45%, p = 0.03) and less fat (34%vs 40%, p = 0.01) compared with those without metabolic syndrome; total daily calorie, protein consumption, and physical activity were similar between the two groups. Patients with metabolic syndrome had higher scores for steatosis (2.0 +/- 0.8 vs 1.37 +/- 1, p = 0.02), NASH activity (4.13 +/- 1.4 vs 3.13 +/- 1.7, p = 0.004), and global NASH score (5.9 +/- 1.7 vs 4.4 +/- 2.3, p = 0.0006) compared with those without metabolic syndrome. When controlled for other factors including dietary composition and physical activity, the presence of metabolic syndrome was a significant risk factor for global NASH severity in addition to HOMA index and female gender. CONCLUSION: Metabolic syndrome in patients with NAFLD is associated with a diet containing more carbohydrate and less fat and greater histologic severity. The role of a carbohydrate-restricted diet in decreasing the risk for metabolic syndrome and histologic severity should be assessed in patients with NAFLD.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In individuals with biopsy-proven non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), short-term weight loss has been shown to improve biochemical abnormalities; however, its effect on liver histology is largely unknown. The aim of the article is to determine if dietary intervention is effective in improving histological features of steatohepatitis in patients with biopsy-proven NASH. METHODS: Twenty-three patients (11M/12F) with BMI >25 kg/m(2) and biopsy-proven NASH received standardized nutritional counseling aimed at reducing insulin resistance (IR) and weight. Blood tests were checked at baseline and every 1-4 months, and liver biopsy was repeated at month 12. IR was assessed by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA). Liver biopsies were scored according to modified Brunt criteria for NASH. "Histologic response" was defined as a reduction in total NASH score of >/=2 points with at least one point being in the non-steatosis component. RESULTS: Sixteen patients (8M/8F) completed 12 months of dietary intervention, and 15 underwent repeat liver biopsies. At month 12, mean weight decreased from 98.3 to 95.4 kg. Mean waist circumference, visceral fat, fasting glucose, IR, triglycerides, AST, ALT, and histologic score were all reduced but the difference was not significant. Nine patients had a histologic response, six had stable scores, and none had a worsened score. Compared to patients with unchanged histologic scores, patients with improved scores had significantly greater reduction in weight, waist circumference, AST, ALT, steatosis grade, and total NASH score. CONCLUSION: Among patients who successfully completed 1 yr of intense dietary intervention, nine of 15 patients with NASH displayed histologic improvement. This pilot study suggests that dietary intervention can be effective in improving histology in patients with biopsy-proven NASH.
