RESUMEN

The over-dependence on fossil fuels is one of the critical issues to be addressed for combating greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen, one of the promising alternatives to fossil fuels, is renewable, carbon-free, and non-polluting gas. The complete utilization of hydrogen in every sector ranging from small to large scale could hugely benefit in mitigating climate change. One of the key aspects of the hydrogen sector is its production via cost-effective and safe ways. Electrolysis and photocatalysis are well-known processes for hydrogen production and their efficiency relies on electrocatalysts, which are generally noble metals. The usage of noble metals as catalysts makes these processes costly and their scarcity is also a limiting factor. Metal nitrides and their porous counterparts have drawn considerable attention from researchers due to their good promise for hydrogen production. Their properties such as active metal centres, nitrogen functionalities, and porous features such as surface area, pore-volume, and tunable pore size could play an important role in electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production. This review focuses on the recent developments in metal nitrides from their synthesis methods point of view. Much attention is given to the emergence of new synthesis techniques, methods, and processes of synthesizing the metal nitride nanostructures. The applications of electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production are summarized. Overall, this review will provide useful information to researchers working in the field of metal nitrides and their application for hydrogen production.

RESUMEN

Adsorption is the most widely adopted, effective, and reliable treatment process for the removal of inorganic and organic contaminants from wastewater. One of the major issues with the adsorption-treatment process for the removal of contaminants from wastewater streams is the recovery and sustainable management of spent adsorbents. This review focuses on the effectiveness of emerging adsorbents and how the spent adsorbents could be recovered, regenerated, and further managed through reuse or safe disposal. The critical analysis of both conventional and emerging adsorbents on organic and inorganic contaminants in wastewater systems are evaluated. The various recovery and regeneration techniques of spent adsorbents including magnetic separation, filtration, thermal desorption and decomposition, chemical desorption, supercritical fluid desorption, advanced oxidation process and microbial assisted adsorbent regeneration are discussed in detail. The current challenges for the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents and the methodologies used for solving those problems are covered. The spent adsorbents are managed through regeneration for reuse (such as soil amendment, capacitor, catalyst/catalyst support) or safe disposal involving incineration and landfilling. Sustainable management of spent adsorbents, including processes involved in the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents for reuse, is examined in the context of resource recovery and circular economy. Finally, the review ends with the current drawbacks in the recovery and management of the spent adsorbents and the future directions for the economic and environmental feasibility of the system for industrial-scale application.

RESUMEN

We report on the synthesis of 3D mesoporous fullerene/carbon hybrid materials with ordered porous structure and high surface area by mixing the solution of fullerene and sucrose molecules in the nanochannels of 3D mesoporous silica, KIT-6 via nanotemplating approach. The addition of sucrose molecules in the synthesis offers a thin layer of carbon between the fullerene molecules which enhances not only the specific surface area and the specific pore volume but also the conductivity of the hybrid materials. The prepared hybrids exhibit 3D mesoporous structure and show a much higher specific surface area than that of the pure mesoporous fullerene. The hybrids materials are used as the electrodes for supercapacitor and Li-ion battery applications. The optimised hybrid sample shows an excellent rate capability and a high specific capacitance of 254 F/g at the current density of 0.5 A/g, which is much higher than that of the pure mesoporous fullerene, mesoporous carbon, activated carbon and multiwalled carbon nanotubes. When used as the electrode for Li-ion battery, the sample delivers the largest specific capacity of 1067 mAh/g upon 50 cycles at the current density of 0.1 A/g with stability. These results reveal that the addition of carbon in the mesoporous fullerene with 3D structure makes a significant impact on the electrochemical properties of the hybrid samples, demonstrating their potential for applications in Li-ion battery and supercapacitor devices.

RESUMEN

Three-dimensional cage-like mesoporous FDU-12 materials with large tuneable pore sizes ranging from 9.9 to 15.6 nm were prepared by varying the synthesis temperature from 100 to 200 °C for the aging time of just 2 h using a tri-block copolymer F-127(EO106PO70EO106) as the surfactant and 1,3,5-trimethyl benzene as the swelling agent in an acidic condition. The mesoporous structure and textural features of FDU-12-HX (where H denotes the hydrothermal method and X denotes the synthesis temperature) samples were elucidated and probed using x-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption, 29Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It has been demonstrated that the aging time can be significantly reduced from 72 to 2 h without affecting the structural order of the FDU-12 materials with a simple adjustment of the synthesis temperature from 100 to 200 °C. Among the materials prepared, the samples prepared at 200 °C had the highest pore volume and the largest pore diameter. Lysozyme adsorption experiments were conducted over FDU-12 samples prepared at different temperatures in order to understand their biomolecule adsorption capacity, where the FDU-12-HX samples displayed high adsorption performance of 29 µmol g-1 in spite of shortening the actual synthesis time from 72 to 2 h. Further, the influence of surface area, pore volume and pore diameter on the adsorption capacity of FDU-12-HX samples has been investigated and results are discussed in correlation with the textural parameters of the FDU-12-HX and other mesoporous adsorbents including SBA-15, MCM-41, KIT-5, KIT-6 and CMK-3.
