RESUMEN

High salinity wastewaters have limited treatment options due to the occurrence of salt inhibition in conventional biological treatments. Using recirculating marine aquaculture effluents as a case study, this work explored the use of Constructed Wetlands as a treatment option for nutrient and salt loads reduction. Three different substrates were tested for nutrient adsorption, of which expanded clay performed better. This substrate adsorbed 0.31 mg kg(-1) of NH4(+)-N and 5.60 mg kg(-1) of PO4(3-)-P and 6.9 mg kg(-1) dissolved salts after 7 days of contact. Microcosms with Typha latifolia planted in expanded clay and irrigated with aquaculture wastewater (salinity 2.4%, 7 days hydraulic retention time, for 4 weeks), were able to remove 94% NH(4+)-N (inlet 0.25 +/- 0.13 mg L(-1)), 78% NO2(-)-N (inlet 0.78 +/- 0.62 mg L(-1)), 46% NO3(-)-N (inlet 18.83 +/- 8.93 mg L(-1)) whereas PO4(3-)-P was not detected (inlet 1.41 +/- 0.21 mg L(-1)). Maximum salinity reductions of 52% were observed. Despite some growth inhibition, plants remained viable, with 94% survival rate. Daily treatment dynamics studies revealed rapid PO4(3-)-P adsorption, unbalancing the N:P ratio and possibly affecting plant development. An integrated treatment approach, coupled with biomass valorization, is suggested to provide optimal resource management possibilities.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical and radiological characteristics of patients with bronchiolitis obliterans. METHODS: This is a retrospective and descriptive study. Data were collected from patients diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans between 2004 and 2008 in the Pediatric Pulmonology Clinic of Hospital Infantil Albert Sabin, in Ceará, Northeast Brazil. Such diagnosis was based on clinical and tomographic criteria. Previous history, clinical findings at the diagnosis, complementary exams, and follow-up data were evaluated. RESULTS: 35 children diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans were identified. There was a predominance of male patients (3:1). The mean age at the onset of symptoms was 7.5 months, and bronchiolitis obliterans was diagnosed at a mean age of 21.8 months. The most common clinical findings were crackles/wheezing, tachypnea, dyspnea, and chest deformity. Post-infectious etiology was the main cause of bronchiolitis obliterans. Predominant findings at chest X-ray and high resolution computed tomography were peri-bronchial thickening and mosaic pattern, respectively. The treatment was variable and individualized. The majority of patients improved during follow-up, despite the persistence of respiratory symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the predominance of male patients and post-infectious etiology was noted, corroborating scientific literature. The most common tomographic findings were similar to those described in previous studies (mosaic pattern, peri-bronchial thickening, and bronchiectasis). Evidence about the treatment of this disease is still lacking. The diagnosis was delayed, which indicates that clinical suspicion of bronchiolitis obliterans is necessary in children with persistent and severe wheezing.

OBJETIVO: Descrever as características clínico-radiológicas dos pacientes com bronquiolite obliterante. MÉTODOS: Estudo descritivo e retrospectivo. Foram coletados dados de pacientes diagnosticados com bronquiolite obliterante entre 2004 e 2008 no Ambulatório de Pneumologia Pediátrica do Hospital Infantil Albert Sabin, no Ceará. O diagnóstico foi baseado em critérios clínicos e tomográficos. Foram avaliados história prévia, quadro clínico por ocasião do diagnóstico, exames complementares e evolução. RESULTADOS: Foram identificados 35 pacientes com bronquiolite obliterante. Houve predominância do sexo masculino (3:1). A média de idade no início dos sintomas foi de 7,5 meses e, por ocasião do diagnóstico, 21,8 meses. Os achados clínicos mais frequentes foram estertores/sibilos, taquipneia, dispneia e deformidade torácica. A etiologia pós-infecciosa destacou-se como a principal causa de bronquiolite obliterante. As alterações encontradas com maior frequência à radiografia e à tomografia computadorizada de alta resolução de tórax foram espessamento peribrônquico e padrão de perfusão em mosaico, respectivamente. O tratamento instituído aos pacientes foi variável e individualizado. A maioria deles evoluiu com melhora clínica durante o seguimento, apesar da persistência da sintomatologia respiratória. CONCLUSÕES: A presente casuística de bronquiolite obliterante mostrou predominância de pacientes do sexo masculino e de etiologia pós-infecciosa, corroborando os dados da literatura. Os achados tomográficos mais encontrados foram semelhantes aos descritos em trabalhos anteriores (perfusão em mosaico, espessamento peribrônquico e bronquiectasias). Ainda faltam evidências acerca do tratamento para esta doença. O diagnóstico de bronquiolite obliterante foi tardio, necessitando da suspeição clínica por parte dos pediatras frente a lactentes chiadores graves e perenes.

MÉTODOS: Estudio descriptivo y retrospectivo. Se recogieron datos de pacientes diagnosticados con bronquiolitis obliterante entre 2004 y 2008. El diagnóstico se basó en criterios clínicos y tomográficos. Se evaluaron la historia previa, el cuadro clínico en el momento del diagnóstico, exámenes complementares y evolución. RESULTADOS: Se identificaron 35 pacientes diagnosticados con bronquiolitis obliterante. Hubo predominancia de los pacientes del sexo masculino (3:1). El promedio de edad en el inicio de los síntomas fue de 7,5 meses y, en el momento del diagnóstico, 21,8 meses. Los hallazgos clínicos más frecuentes fueron ruidos respiratorios/silbidos, taquipnea, disnea y deformidad torácica. La etiología post-infecciosa se destacó como la principal causa de bronquiolitis obliterante. Las alteraciones encontradas con más frecuencia a la radiografía y a la tomografía computadorizada de alta resolución del tórax fueron espesamiento peribrónquico y estándar de perfusión en mosaico, respectivamente. El tratamiento instituido a los pacientes fue variable e individualizado. La mayoría evolucionó con mejora clínica durante el seguimiento, a pesar de la persistencia de la sintomatología respiratoria en grados variables. CONCLUSIONES: La presente casuística de bronquiolitis obliterante mostró predominancia de pacientes del sexo masculino y de etiología post-infecciosa, corroborando los datos de la literatura. Los hallazgos tomográficos más encontrados fueron semejantes a los descriptos en trabajos anteriores (perfusión en mosaico, espesamiento brónquico y bronquiectasias). Todavía faltan evidencias sobre el tratamiento para esta enfermedad. El diagnóstico de bronquiolitis obliterante fue tardío, siendo necesaria la sospecha clínica por parte de los pediatras frente a lactantes silbadores graves y perennes.

Microbial monitoring of constructed wetlands (CWs) treating domestic wastewater is generally scarce, despite the need of more knowledge about its biocenosis. The sanitation quality of a wastewater treated in a CW is a crucial aspect, mainly when the receiving water body is used as a swimming and/or recreation area. The present study was carried out in a horizontal subsurface flow CWplanted with Phragmites australis receiving pre-treated domestic wastewater (mean flow 50 m3 day(-1)), from a population of about 300 inhabitants. The monitoring programme undertaken during the first year operation, revealed removal efficiencies of 61% BOD5, 44% COD, and 65% TSS for inlet water with ca. 90 mg L(-1) BOD5, 157 mg L(-1) COD, and 17 mg L(-1) TSS. Total Coliform (TC) and Faecal Coliform (FC) bacteria were removed from wastewater (mean inlet values of 5 x 10(6) CFU 100 mL(-1) TC and of 9 x 10(5) CFU 100 mL(-1) FC), with efficiencies of 92 and 97%, respectively. The dynamics of microbial communities established in the system assessed by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE), had revealed a high bacterial diversity within the system, with no relevant differences in composition at the CW inlet and outlet but exhibiting temporal differences in bacterial communities.

This study is focused on the diversity of bacterial communities from two series of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CW) polishing high salinity tannery wastewater. Each series was planted with Arundo donax or Sarcocornia sp. in a substrate composed by expanded clay and sand. Chemical and biochemical oxygen demand removal efficiencies were similar in each series, varying between 58 and 67% (inlet COD 218 ± 28 mg L(-1)) and 60 and 77% (inlet BOD(5) 37 ± 6 mg L(-1)), respectively. High numbers of culturable bacteria were obtained from substrate and root samples - 5.75 × 10(6)-3.95 × 10(8) CFU g(-1) recovered on marine agar and 1.72 × 10(7)-8.46 × 10(8) CFU g(-1) on nutrient agar. Fifty bacterial isolates were retrieved from the CW, related phylogenetically to Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, α-, ß-, and γ-Proteobacteria. Changes in the bacterial communities, from roots and substrate of each series, related to the plant species, hydraulic loading rates and along CW operation were examined using denaturating gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The clustering analysis suggested that a diverse and distinct bacterial community inhabits each series, which was related to the type of plant present in each CW.

To explore the local transmission dynamics of Tunga penetrans in brazil, 134 soil samples from various environments were collected in three different endemic regions of the country and checked for the presence of the flea's larvae, pupae and adults. the samples, which came from an urban slum in the north-east, a village of xavante indians in the central-west and a community of yanomami indians living in traditional longhouses (malocas) in the north, were categorized as indoor, outdoor or indoor-outdoor (the latter representing samples collected in the malocas). The proportion of samples found positive for T. penetrans was lowest in the slum (9.3%) and highest in the Yanomami village (32.0%; P=0.01). Soil samples collected below bedsteads or hammocks or from the indoor resting places of dogs were significantly more likely to be positive than the indoor samples collected at other sites (65.0% v. 35.0%; P=0.02). There was no evidence indicating that the presence of T. penetrans in a soil sample was markedly affected by soil temperature, air temperature or air humidity. As no life stages of T. penetrans were found in any outdoor sample, it seems likely that, in resource-poor settings in Brazil, most transmission of T. penetrans occurs indoors. Control measures against the off-host life stages of T. penetrans should therefore be targeted at particular indoor micro-environments.

In the present study, the life cycle of Tunga penetrans was established in Wistar rats in the laboratory, and the morphology of the resulting developmental stages was studied by means of light and scanning electron microscopy. It was seen that the females enter at a nonfertilized stage through the skin of their hosts. Only there the copulation occurs, while females and males brought together in a Petri dish showed no interest in each other. In any way -- fertilized or not -- the females start about 6 days after penetration and hypertrophy with the ejection of eggs. While fertilized eggs proceed to development, the unfertilized ones remain arrested. The eggs are ovoid and measure about 600 x 320 mum. The larvae hatch from the eggs 1-6 days (mean 3-4) after ejection. Formation of larvae 2 took at least another day, while 4 up to 10 days more were needed until this larva starts pupation (mean 5-7 days). The formation of the adult fleas inside the puparium occurred within 9-15 days (with a maximum hatch at day 12). Adult female fleas having reached the skin of a host start blood sucking within 5 min and prepare to enter the skin. After 24 h, the flea stacked already with two thirds of its body inside the skin. After 40 h, the penetration was completed, and feeding and hypertrophical enlargement started, which was completed on day 6, when eggs became ejected. When studying the morphology of the fleas obtained from different hosts, slight variations were seen, which, however, are not significant for a species separation but may be an indication of the presence of different strains/races or the beginning of such a formation.

The culturable bacteria colonizing the rhizosphere of plants growing in the area of discharge of a tannery effluent were characterized. Relative proportions of aerobic, denitrifying, and sulfate-reducing bacteria were determined in the rhizosphere of Typha latifolia, Canna indica, and Phragmites australis. Aerobic bacteria were observed to be the most abundant group in the rhizosphere, and plant type did not seem to influence the abundance of the bacterial types analyzed. To isolate bacteria able to degrade polyphenols used in the tannery industry, enrichments were conducted under different conditions. Bacterial cultures were enriched with individual polyphenols (tannins Tara, Quebracho, or Mimosa) or with an undefined mixture of tannins present in the tannery effluent as carbon source. Cultures enriched with the effluent or Tara tannin were able to degrade tannic acid. Six bacterial isolates purified from these mixed cultures were able to use tannic acid as a sole carbon source in axenic culture. On the basis of 16S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis, these isolates were closely related to organisms belonging to the taxa Serratia, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Klebsiella oxytoca, Herbaspirillum chlorophenolicum, and Pseudomonas putida.

A study was conducted to determine the susceptibility of local strains of Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti to infection with the strain of Wuchereria bancrofti that occurs in Maceió. State of Alagoas, Brazil. Cx. quinquefasciatus blood fed simultaneously on the same microfilariae carrier ingested more blood and 2-3x more microfilariae than Ae. aegypti. Survival rates of both species of insects living for 21 days after blood feeding on microfilaraemic patients were not significantly different from the survival rates of mosquitoes that blood fed on amicrofilaraemic individuals. W. bancrofti parasites underwent normal development in Cx. quinquefasciatus, with third stage larvae first being recorded on the 11th day post infection, and their numbers increasing thereafter. Development of filariae in Ae. aegypti did not proceed beyond the first larval stage, and there was a progressively increasing number of non-viable larvae with the passage of time. It is concluded that Ae. aegypti is not involved in the transmission of W. bancrofti in Maceió.

Epidemiological and entomological surveys were carried out in the human and mosquito populations in Maceió, Alagoas, in order to assess the present status of bancroftian lymphatic filariasis. Examination of thick blood smears of 10,450 students from different areas of the city revealed 0.66% Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaria carriers. The distribution of filariasis is focal in the city, 80% of the individuals with patent infection living in two neighboring areas with 1.24% and 5.25% prevalence. Parallel studies performed with samples of all age groups in the human population showed similar microfilaria prevalence rates observed previously in the student survey. However, thick blood smears taken from members of families with at least one subject with patent infection gave a prevalence six times greater suggesting, increased transmission in households. The percentage of carriers was higher in the youngest age group (< 20 years). Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitos caught at the locations where the autochthonous cases were found presented natural infection rates ranging from 0.28% to 4.62%. The combination of all these findings indicates occurrence of active transmission of W. bancrofti in the urban area of Maceió, Alagoas State. Based on these data, measures for the potential control of filariasis were planned.
