RESUMEN

Aerobic fermentation was previously proposed to reduce the ethanol content of wine. The main constraint found for Saccharomyces cerevisiae to be used under these conditions was the high levels of acetic acid produced by all S. cerevisiae strains previously tested. This work addressed the identification of S. cerevisiae wine yeast strains suitable for aerobic fermentation and the optimization of fermentation conditions to obtain a reduced ethanol yield with acceptable volatile acidity. This approach unveiled a great diversity in acetic acid yield for different S. cerevisiae strains under aerobic conditions, with some strains showing very low volatile acidity. Three strains were selected for further characterization in bioreactors, with natural grape must, under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Ethanol yields were lower under aerobic than under anaerobic conditions for all strains, and acetic acid levels were low for two of them. Strain-dependent changes in volatile compounds were also observed between aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Finally, the process was optimized at laboratory scale for one strain. This is the first report of S. cerevisiae wine strains showing low acetic acid production under aerobic conditions and paves the way for simplified aerobic fermentation protocols aimed to reducing the alcohol content of wines.

Novel poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based soft gels with luminescent properties are detailed in this contribution. Lanthanide complex of terbium ions with anthranilic acid, Tb(ant)3·2H2O, was synthesized and incorporated into a DMSO/water solution, followed by addition of PVA, to attain soft gels at room temperature. Morphological and thermal analyses revealed homogeneous distribution of Tb(ant)3·2H2O into the PVOH/DMSO/water gel, and that incorporation of the terbium complex does not alter the thermal properties of the gels. The gels are transparent and luminescent, as they exhibit Large Stokes shift down shifting (LSS DS) up to 400nm, with very high emission quantum yield, that was found to be function of Tb complex concentration.

A prevalent developmental mechanism for the assignment of cell identities is the production of spatiotemporal concentration gradients of extracellular signaling molecules that are interpreted by the responding cells. One of such signaling systems is the Shh gradient that controls neuronal subtype identity in the ventral spinal cord. Using loss and gain of function approaches in chick and mouse embryos, we show here that the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling pathway is required to restrict the domains of ventral gene expression as neuroepithelial cells become exposed to Shh during caudal extension of the embryo. FGF signaling activates the expression of the Shh receptor and negative pathway regulator Patched 2 (Ptch2) and therefore can enhance a negative feedback loop that restrains the activity of the pathway. Thus, we identify one of the mechanisms by which FGF signaling acts as a modulator of the onset of Shh signaling activity in the context of coordination of ventral patterning and caudal axis extension. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
