BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the extrahepatic bile duct is very rare, and the treatment and prognosis are unclear. Herein, we report the case of a middle-aged female with primary large cell NEC (LCNEC) of the common hepatic duct combined with distal cholangiocarcinoma (dCCA). Additionally, after a review of the relevant literature, we summarize and compare mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm (MiNEN) and pure NEC to provide a reference for selecting the appropriate treatment and predicting the prognosis of this rare disease. CASE SUMMARY: A 62-year-old female presented to the hospital due to recurrent abdominal pain for 2 months. Physical examination showed mild tenderness in the upper abdomen and a positive Courvoisier sign. Blood tests showed elevated liver transaminase and carbohydrate antigen 199 levels. Imaging examination revealed a 1-cm tumour in the middle and lower segments of the common bile duct. Pancreaticoduodenectomy + lymph node dissection was performed, and hepatic duct tumours were unexpectedly found during surgery. Pathology suggested poorly differentiated LCNEC (approximately 0.5 cm × 0.5 cm × 0.4 cm), Ki-67 (50%), synaptophysin+, and chromogranin A+. dCCA pathology suggested moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. The patient eventually developed lymph node metastasis in the liver, bone, peritoneum, and abdominal cavity and died 24 months after surgery. Gene sequencing methods were used to compare gene mutations in the two primary bile duct tumours. CONCLUSION: The prognosis of MiNEN and pure NEC alone is different, and the selection of treatment options needs to be differentiated.

Gut Akkermansia muciniphila (Akk) has been implicated in impacting immunotherapy or oncogenesis. This study aims to dissect the Akk-associated tumor immune ecosystem (TIME) by single-cell profiling coupled with T cell receptor (TCR) sequencing. We adopted mouse cancer models under anti-PD-1 immunotherapy, combined with oral administration of three forms of Akk, including live Akk, pasteurized Akk (Akk-past), or its membrane protein Amuc_1100 (Amuc). We show that live Akk is most effective in activation of CD8 T cells by rescuing the exhausted type into cytotoxic subpopulations. Remarkably, only live Akk activates MHC-II-pDC pathways, downregulates CXCL3 in Bgn(+)Dcn(+) cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), blunts crosstalk between Bgn(+)Dcn(+) CAFs and PD-L1(+) neutrophils by a CXCL3-PD-L1 axis, and further suppresses the crosstalk between PD-L1(+) neutrophils and CD8 T cells, leading to the rescue of exhausted CD8 T cells. Together, this comprehensive picture of the tumor ecosystem provides deeper insights into immune mechanisms associated with gut Akk-dependent anti-PD-1 immunotherapy.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of yacon root extracts (YREs) on productive performance and health of laying hens. Methods: Six hundred 30-week-old Xiaoshan Chicken layers were divided into 5 groups, control group, antibiotic positive control group, and 3 YREs treatment groups. In a 9-wk feeding experiment, at the end of wk 3, 6 and 9, twenty eggs were collected from each replicate to measure egg qualities. At the end of wk 9, three hen serum samples, and 5 hen cecal content samples were collected from each replicate. Results: Compared to the control group, 0.8%, 1.6% and 2.4% YREs treatments could increase hens' daily feed intake, and YREs supplementation affected daily feed intake in linear manner. YREs did not change egg size, but 0.8% and 2.4% YREs changed egg shape by decreasing the egg shape index and sphericity, and 0.8% YREs tended to improve the eggshell breaking strength. 1.6% YREs might decrease yolk color grade but optimize the pH of thick egg white in fresh egg; moreover, 1.6% and 2.4% YREs might be helpful for eggs to inhibit water loss during storage, and YREs supplementation affected water loss rate in linear manner. 2.4% YREs could decrease the serum lactate dehydrogenases (LDH) level, and YREs supplemental levels linearly affected serum LDH content. Finally, YREs could enrich the diversity of intestinal microbiota of hens fed with 0.8% and be beneficial for the relative abundance of phylum Bacteroidota and Halobacterota; 2.4% YREs might increase the abundance of phylum Actinobacteriota and genus Bifidobacterium, while decrease genus Bacteroides; YREs supplemental levels affected the abundance of phylum Actinobacteriota, and genera Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides in linear manner. Conclusion: Dietary supplementation with YREs could affect egg quality, protect the health of organs and exhibit prebiotic activity.

ATP plays a crucial role in cell energy supply, so the quantification of intracellular ATP levels is particularly important for understanding many physio-pathological processes. The intracellular quantification of this non-electroactive molecule can be realized using aptamer-modified nanoelectrodes, but is hindered by the limited quantity of modification and electroactive tags on the nanosized electrodes. Herein, we developed a simple but effective electrochemical signal amplification strategy for intracellular ATP detection, which replaces the regular ATP aptamer-linked ferrocene monomer with a polymer, thus greatly magnifying the amounts of electrochemical reporters linked to one chain of the aptamer and enhancing the signals. This ferrocene polymer-ATP aptamer was further immobilized onto Au nanowire electrodes (SiC@C@Au NWEs) to achieve accurate quantification of intracellular ATP in single cells, presenting high electrochemical signal output and high specificity. This work not only provides a powerful tool for quantifying intracellular ATP but also offers a simple and versatile strategy for electrochemical signal amplification in the detection of broader non-electroactive molecules involved in different kinds of intracellular physiological processes.

Tricuspid regurgitation is a common valve disease with high incidence and poor prognosis. For elderly patients and those with a history of open heart surgery, second thoracotomy and valve replacement carry a high risk. Transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR) has become an alternative treatment for patients with high surgical risk. LuX-Valve is a novel self-expandable valve that does not rely on radial force to anchor the valve annulus. The preliminary results have been satisfactory, and this technology is gradually being adopted in China and around the world. Successful implementation of this technique depends on echocardiographic preoperative screening, intraoperative guidance, and postoperative follow-up. The purpose of this article is to provide a state-of-the-art review of the key points and technical considerations for preoperative screening, intraoperative guidance, and postoperative follow-up for TTVR.

Diabetic foot ulcers are a significant complication affecting roughly 15% of diabetic patients. These chronic wounds can be incredibly burdensome, leading to high treatment costs, potential amputations, and additional health complications. Microbiological studies reveal that bacterial infections are the primary culprit behind delayed wound healing. To solve the problem of infection at the wound site, the most fundamental thing is to kill the pathogenic bacteria. Herein, a neoteric strategy to construct novel antibacterial hydrogel COA-T3 that combined photosensitizers (PSs) and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) via covalent coupling was proposed. Hydrogel COA-T3 composed of quaternized chitosan (QCS) and oxidized dextran (OD) was constructed for co-delivery of the photosensitizer TPI-PN and the antimicrobial peptide HHC10. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated remarkable effectiveness of COA-T3 against drug-resistant bacteria. Furthermore, the hydrogel significantly promoted healing of diabetic infected wounds. This enhanced antibacterial activity is attributed to the pH-sensitive release of both PSs and AMPs within the hydrogel. Additionally, COA-T3 exhibits excellent biocompatibility, making it a promising candidate for wound dressing materials. These findings indicated that the COA-T3 hydrogel is a promising wound dressing material for promoting the healing of diabetic foot ulcers by providing an environment conducive to improved wound healing in diabetic patients.

BACKGROUND: High salt intake has been proposed as a risk factor for dementia. However, causal relationship between salt intake and dementia remains uncertain. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to employ a mendelian randomization (MR) design to investigate the causal impact of salt intake on the risk of dementia. METHODS: Genome-wide association study (GWAS) data of exposures and outcomes (any dementia, cognitive performance, different types of dementia, Alzheimer's disease [AD], and Parkinson's disease) were obtained from the IEU database. MR estimates were generated though inverse-variance weighted model. MR-Egger, weighted median, and MR-Pleiotropy Residual Sum and Outlier (MR-PRESSO) method also used in our study. Sensitivity analyses included Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger intercept, MR-PRESSO global test and outlier test, leave-one-out analysis, and funnel plot assessment. RESULTS: Our MR analysis provided evidence of a causal association between high salt added to food and dementia (odds ratio [OR] = 1.73, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.21-2.49, and p = .003), dementia in AD (OR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.15-3.83, and p = .015), and undefined dementia (OR = 2.61, 95% CI: 1.26-5.39, and p = .009). Higher salt added was also associated with increased risk of AD (OR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.12-2.87, and p = .014) and lower cognitive performance (ß = -.133, 95% CI: -.229 to -.038, and p = .006). CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence suggesting that high salt intake is causally associated with an increased risk of developing dementia, including AD and undefined dementia, highlighting the potential importance of reducing salt consumption as a preventive measure.

Creatures, such as Venus flytrap and hummingbirds, capable of rapid predation through snap-through transition, provide paradigms for the design of soft actuators and robots with fast actions. However, these artificial "snappers" usually need contact stimulations to trigger the flipping. Reported here is a constrained anisotropic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel showing fast snapping upon light stimulation. This hydrogel is prepared by flow-induced orientation of nanosheets (NSs) within a rectangular tube. The precursor containing gold nanoparticles is immediately exposed to UV light for photopolymerization to fix the ordered structure of NSs. Two ends of the slender gel are clamped to form a buckle with bistability nature, which snaps to the other side upon laser irradiation. Systematic experiments are conducted to investigate the influences of power intensity and irradiation angle of the laser, as well as thickness and buckle height of the gel, on the snapping behaviors. The fast snapping is further used to kick a plastic bead and control the switch state. Furthermore, synergetic or oscillated snapping of the gel with two buckles of opposite directions is realized by inclined irradiation of a laser or horizontal irradiation with two lasers, respectively. Such light-steered snapping of hydrogels should merit designing soft robots, energy harvests, etc.

Cordycepin is the primary active compound of Cordyceps militaris. However, the definitive genetic mechanism governing cordycepin synthesis in fruiting body growth and development remains elusive, necessitating further investigation. This study consists of 64 C. militaris strains collected from northeast China. The high-yielding cordycepin strain CMS19 was selected for the analysis of cordycepin production and the genetic basis of cordycepin anabolism. First, the whole-genome sequencing of CMS19 yielded a final size of 30.96 Mb with 8 contigs and 9781 protein-coding genes. The genome component revealed the presence of four additional secondary metabolite gene clusters compared with other published genomes, suggesting the potential for the production of new natural products. The analyses of evolutionary and genetic differentiation revealed a close relationship between C. militaris and Beauveria bassiana. The population of strains distributed in northeast China exhibited the significant genetic variation. Finally, functional genes associated with cordycepin synthesis were identified using a combination of genomic and transcriptomic analyses. A large number of functional genes associated with energy and purine metabolism were significantly enriched, facilitating the reconstruction of a hypothetical cordycepin metabolic pathway. Therefore, our speculation of the cordycepin metabolism pathway involved 24 genes initiating from the glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathways, progressing through purine metabolism, and culminating in the core region of cordycepin synthesis. These findings could offer fundamental support for scientific utilizations of C. militaris germplasm resources and standardized cultivation for cordycepin production.

BACKGROUND: The expression level of apolipoprotein E (APOE) in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and its effect on the prognosis of PDAC patients are not clear. The effect of APOE on the immune status of patients with PDAC has not been elucidated. METHODS: We obtained pancreatic cancer data from the TCGA and GETx databases. Patients with PDAC who underwent pancreatic surgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Jiaxing University between 2012 and 2021 were included. Clinical pathological data were recorded, plasma APOE levels were measured, and tissue samples were collected. A tissue microarray was generated using the collected tissue samples. APOE and CD4 staining was performed to determine immunoreactive scores (IRSs). The expression of APOE in the plasma and tumour tissues of pancreatic cancer patients was analysed and compared. The correlations between plasma APOE levels, tissue APOE levels and clinicopathological characteristics were analysed. Survival prognosis was analysed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox multivariate regression analysis. The correlations between APOE expression levels and immune biomarkers and immune cells were further analysed. Single-cell analysis of APOE distribution in various cells was performed on the TISCH website. RESULTS: APOE was highly expressed in the tumour tissue of pancreatic cancer patients, and high plasma APOE levels were associated with poor prognosis. Females, patients with high-grade disease and patients with pancreatic head carcinoma had high plasma APOE levels. High APOE expression in tumour tissues was associated with good prognosis. Mononuclear macrophages in the pancreatic cancer microenvironment primarily expressed APOE. APOE levels positively correlated with immune biomarkers, such as CD8A, PDCD1, GZMA, CXCL10, and CXCL9, in the tumour microenvironment. APOE promoted CD4 + T cell or dendritic cell infiltration in the tumour microenvironment. CONCLUSIONS: APOE may affect the occurrence and development of pancreatic cancer by regulating the infiltration of immune cells in the tumour microenvironment.

Problems with minced pork include water release and low gel strength. This study aimed to investigate the effect of treatments with κ-carrageenan (κ-CAR), egg white powder (EWP), wheat gluten (WG), soy isolate protein (SPI), and a combination of these treatments on the gel properties and protein structures of minced pork. The cooking loss and trapped water within minced pork increased when additives were incorporated; in particular, the SPI group reached 1.31 ± 0.01% and 91.42 ± 0.20%. The hardness and chewiness of minced pork reached their maximum values (38.91 ± 0.80 N, 14.73 ± 0.41 N) when the WG was added. The κ-CAR/WG-minced pork gel network structure was the densest and most stable, characterized by increased hydrophobic interactions, disulfide bonds in the mince gel, and enthalpy value. The α-helix content with κ-CAR/WG treatment decreased from 27% to 7.8%, transforming into other secondary structures. This suggests that the addition of κ-CAR/WG can be a more effective combination for improving the quality of minced pork.

To facilitate the understanding of the dynamic distribution and activity of lysosomal enzymes, it is highly desirable to develop high-fidelity near-infrared (NIR) activatable fluorescent probes. Here, we propose a general acceptor engineering strategy to construct NIR probes with lysosome-targeting capability. Upon isosteric replacement and additional functionalization, the ß-gal-activatable probe OELyso-Gal exhibited excellent lysosome-targeting capability and favorable responsive performance to the enzyme of interest. Notably, the steric hindrance effect from acceptor engineering is modest, which renders the probe unprecedented affinity to enzymes. Upon the introduction of acceptor engineering, the lysosome-targeting probe became more sensitive to ß-gal in cells and tissues, boosting the discrimination of high ß-gal-expressing ovarian cancer tumours from low ß-gal-expressing tissues. Furthermore, the superiority of OELyso-Gal was validated in real-time visualization of ovarian cancer in tumour-bearing mice. This elegant acceptor engineering strategy provides inspirational insights into the development of customized fluorescent probes for monitoring disease-associated biomarkers within subcellular organelles.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a rare yet notably aggressive cancer, has experienced a surge in incidence in recent years. Presently, surgical resection remains the most effective curative strategy for CCA. Nevertheless, a majority of patients with CCA are ineligible for surgical removal at the time of diagnosis. For advanced stages of CCA, the combination of gemcitabine and cisplatin is established as the standard chemotherapy regimen. Despite this, treatment efficacy is often hindered by the development of resistance. In recent times, immune checkpoint inhibitors, particularly those that block programmed death 1 and its ligand (PD1/PD-L1), have emerged as promising strategies against a variety of cancers and are being increasingly integrated into the therapeutic landscape of CCA. A growing body of research supports that the use of PD1/PD-L1 monoclonal antibodies in conjunction with chemotherapy may significantly improve patient outcomes. This article seeks to meticulously review the latest studies on PD1/PD-L1 involvement in CCA, delving into their expression profiles, prognostic significance, contribution to oncogenic processes, and their potential clinical utility.

At present, there are no official approved drugs for improving muscle endurance. Our previous research found acute phase protein orosomucoid (ORM) is an endogenous anti-fatigue protein, and macrolides antibiotics erythromycin can elevate ORM level to increase muscle bioenergetics and endurance parameters. Here, we further designed, synthesized and screened a new erythromycin derivative named HMS-01, which lost its antibacterial activity in vitro and in vivo. Data showed that HMS-01 could time- and dose-dependently prolong mice forced-swimming time and running time, and improve fatigue index in isolated soleus muscle. Moreover, HMS-01 treatment could increase the glycogen content, mitochondria number and function in liver and skeletal muscle, as well as ORM level in these tissues and sera. In Orm-deficient mice, the anti-fatigue and glycogen-elevation activity of HMS-01 disappeared. Therefore, HMS-01 might act as a promising small molecule drug targeting ORM to enhance muscle endurance.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical feasibility of atlantoaxial intra-articular cage (AIC) fusion via intermuscular approach for treating reducible atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD). METHODS: An analysis was conducted on the data of 10 patients who underwent C1-C2 segmental fixation and AIC fusion for AAD by unilateral intermuscular approach and contralateral open approach. Outcome assessments included Japanese Orthopaedic Association score (JOA) and Visual Analog Scale Score for Neck Pain (VASSNP). The duration of surgical exposure, screw insertion and cage insertion, and postoperative drainage volume were also compared between two approaches. Bone fusion was evaluated through computed tomography (CT) reconstruction. Postoperative paravertebral tissue edema was evaluated by paravertebral tissue cross-sectional area (CSA) and signal intensity on T2 weighted sequence of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 3 days postoperatively. RESULTS: The intermuscular approach exhibited a longer exposure time but lower drainage postoperatively compared to the open approach (P < 0.05). After operation, JOA scores significant improved (P < 0.05), while VASSNP scores significantly decreased (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in preoperative CSA between two approaches (P > 0.05). However, compared to the open approach, the intermuscular approach exhibited less CSA (P < 0.05) and lower T2 signal intensity on MRI postoperatively, indicating less invasive to the paravertebral tissues. CONCLUSIONS: AIC fusion by intermuscular approach is an effective and safe technique in the treatment of reducible AAD. Intermuscular approach could reduce the postoperative drainage volume and the extent of paravertebral tissue edema compared to open approach.

Beyond traditional paper, multifunctional nanopaper has received much attention in recent years. Currently, many nanomaterials have been successfully used as building units of nanopaper. However, it remains a great challenge to prepare flexible and freestanding metal-organic framework (MOF) nanopaper owing to the low aspect ratio and brittleness of MOF nanocrystals. Herein, this work develops a flexible and free-standing MOF nanopaper with MOF nanowires as building units. The manganese-based MOF (Mn-MOF) nanowires with lengths up to 100 µm are synthesized by a facile solvothermal method. Through a paper-making technique, the Mn-MOF nanowires interweave with each other to form a three-dimensional architecture, thus creating a flexible and free-standing Mn-MOF nanowire paper. Furthermore, the surface properties can be engineered to obtain high hydrophobicity by modifying polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on the surfaces of the Mn-MOF nanowire paper. The water contact angle reaches 130°. As a proof of concept, this work presents two potential applications of the Mn-MOF/PDMS nanowire paper: (i) The as-prepared Mn-MOF/PDMS nanowire paper is compatible with a commercial printer. The as-printed colorful patterns are of high quality, and (ii) benefiting from the highly hydrophobic surfaces, the Mn-MOF/PDMS nanowire paper is able to efficiently separate oil from water.

Patients with sepsis are often complicated by acute kidney injury (AKI), which greatly increases mortality. In this study, our purpose was to explore the expression and function of CDGSH iron sulfur domain 2 (CISD2) in septic AKI, and the underlying molecular mechanism. Western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were employed to detect protein and mRNA levels in cells. The inflammation level of cells was evaluated by detecting the content of inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6). Apoptosis of cells was evaluated by Caspase-3 activity assay, flow cytometry and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP Nick-End Labeling (TUNEL) staining. CISD2 was down-regulated in HK-2 cells treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). LPS treatment increased the level of inflammatory factors, the activity of Caspase-3, and the rate of apoptosis in HK-2 cells. However, overexpression of CISD2 significantly suppressed these effects. Moreover, overexpression of CISD2 activated the Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway. The use of cyclopamine (Cyc), a SHH signaling pathway inhibitor, eliminated the effect of overexpressing CISD2, that is, inhibiting LPS-induced inflammation and apoptosis of HK-2 cells. LPS treatment down-regulated CISD2 in HK-2 cells, and overexpression of CISD2 could inhibit LPS-induced inflammation and apoptosis of HK-2 cells by activating the SHH signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is one of the significant consequences of ox-LDL-induced endothelial cell (EC) dysfunction. The senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) is a critical source of inflammation factors. However, the molecular mechanism by which the SASP is regulated in ECs under ox-LDL conditions remains unknown. RESULTS: The level of SASP was increased in ox-LDL-treated ECs, which could be augmented by KLF4 knockdown whereas restored by KLF4 knock-in. Furthermore, we found that KLF4 directly promoted PDGFRA transcription and confirmed the central role of the NAPMT/mitochondrial ROS pathway in KLF4/PDGFRA-mediated inhibition of SASP. Animal experiments showed a higher SASP HFD-fed mice, compared with normal feed (ND)-fed mice, and the endothelium of EC-specific KLF4-/- mice exhibited a higher proportion of SA-ß-gal-positive cells and lower PDGFRA/NAMPT expression. CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed that KLF4 inhibits the SASP of endothelial cells under ox-LDL conditions through the PDGFRA/NAMPT/mitochondrial ROS. METHODS: Ox-LDL-treated ECs and HFD-fed mice were used as endothelial senescence models in vitro and in vivo. SA-ß-gal stain, detection of SAHF and the expression of inflammatory factors determined SASP and senescence of ECs. The direct interaction of KLF4 and PDGFRA promotor was analyzed by EMSA and fluorescent dual luciferase reporting analysis.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring of gait patterns by insoles is popular to study behavior and activity in the daily life of people and throughout the rehabilitation process of patients. Live data analyses may improve personalized prevention and treatment regimens, as well as rehabilitation. The M-shaped plantar pressure curve during the stance phase is mainly defined by the loading and unloading slope, 2 maxima, 1 minimum, as well as the force during defined periods. When monitoring gait continuously, walking uphill or downhill could affect this curve in characteristic ways. OBJECTIVE: For walking on a slope, typical changes in the stance phase curve measured by insoles were hypothesized. METHODS: In total, 40 healthy participants of both sexes were fitted with individually calibrated insoles with 16 pressure sensors each and a recording frequency of 100 Hz. Participants walked on a treadmill at 4 km/h for 1 minute in each of the following slopes: -20%, -15%, -10%, -5%, 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. Raw data were exported for analyses. A custom-developed data platform was used for data processing and parameter calculation, including step detection, data transformation, and normalization for time by natural cubic spline interpolation and force (proportion of body weight). To identify the time-axis positions of the desired maxima and minimum among the available extremum candidates in each step, a Gaussian filter was applied (σ=3, kernel size 7). Inconclusive extremum candidates were further processed by screening for time plausibility, maximum or minimum pool filtering, and monotony. Several parameters that describe the curve trajectory were computed for each step. The normal distribution of data was tested by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests. RESULTS: Data were normally distributed. An analysis of variance with the gait parameters as dependent and slope as independent variables revealed significant changes related to the slope for the following parameters of the stance phase curve: the mean force during loading and unloading, the 2 maxima and the minimum, as well as the loading and unloading slope (all P<.001). A simultaneous increase in the loading slope, the first maximum and the mean loading force combined with a decrease in the mean unloading force, the second maximum, and the unloading slope is characteristic for downhill walking. The opposite represents uphill walking. The minimum had its peak at horizontal walking and values dropped when walking uphill and downhill alike. It is therefore not a suitable parameter to distinguish between uphill and downhill walking. CONCLUSIONS: While patient-related factors, such as anthropometrics, injury, or disease shape the stance phase curve on a longer-term scale, walking on slopes leads to temporary and characteristic short-term changes in the curve trajectory.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is emerging as a versatile agent for generating long-lived and selectively oxidative organic radicals (R-O•). Currently, the conventional transition metal-based activation strategies still suffer from metal ion leaching, undesirable by-products formation, and uncontrolled reactive species production. To address these challenges, we present a method employing BiOI with a unique electron structure as a PAA activator, thereby predominantly generating CH3C(O)O• radicals. The specificity of CH3C(O)O• generation ensured the superior performance of the BiOI/PAA system across a wide pH range (2.0 to 11.0), even in the presence of complex interfering substances such as humic acids, chloride ions, bicarbonate ions, and real-world water matrices. Unlike conventional catalytic oxidative methods, the BiOI/PAA system degrades sulfonamides without producing any toxic by-products. Our findings demonstrate the advantages of CH3C(O)O• in water decontamination and pave the way for the development of eco-friendly water decontaminations based on organic peroxides.
