BACKGROUND: Perceived weight stigma (PWS) and internalized weight stigma (IWS) are both associated with psychological distress and food addiction (FA). Using the previously proposed 'cyclic obesity/weight-based stigma' (COBWEBS) model, the present study extended the framework to investigate the mediating effects of IWS and psychological distress in the association between PWS and FA among young adults. Given that individuals who are overweight/have obesity have different vulnerabilities, this population was separately analyzed alongside the total study population. METHODS: An online survey comprising the Perceived Weight Stigma Scale, Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS), Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), and modified Yale Food Addiction Scale Version 2 was completed by 601 participants (59.6% females; mean age 29.3 years [SD = 6.07]). A total of 219 participants were categorized as being overweight/having obesity. RESULTS: A direct correlation was found between PWS and FA (standardized coefficient [ß] = 0.28, p < 0.001) among both populations, and was mediated by IWS and psychological distress (ß [95% CI] = 0.03 [0.01, 0.05] for WBIS score and 0.10 [0.06, 0.14] for DASS-21 score) among the total participants, but only mediated by psychological distress among participants who were overweight/had obesity (ß [95% CI] = 0.14 [0.06, 0.24]). CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrated novel perspectives by showing the direct association between PWS and FA and the mediating roles of IWS and psychological distress. Treatment strategies such as psychological acceptance and psychoeducation could be used to reduce weight stigma, which could have positive downstream benefits of ameliorating FA. Future research may seek to study strategies for reducing weight stigma and psychological distress, to investigate their efficacy in improving disordered eating.

5-fluorouracil (5-FU), a major anti-cancer therapeutic, is believed to function primarily by inhibiting thymidylate synthase, depleting deoxythymidine triphosphate (dTTP), and causing DNA damage. Here, we show that clinical combinations of 5-FU with oxaliplatin or irinotecan show no synergy in human colorectal cancer (CRC) trials and sub-additive killing in CRC cell lines. Using selective 5-FU metabolites, phospho- and ubiquitin proteomics, and primary human CRC organoids, we demonstrate that 5-FU-mediated CRC cell killing primarily involves an RNA damage response during ribosome biogenesis, causing lysosomal degradation of damaged rRNAs and proteasomal degradation of ubiquitinated ribosomal proteins. Tumor types clinically responsive to 5-FU treatment show upregulated rRNA biogenesis while 5-FU clinically non-responsive tumor types do not, instead showing greater sensitivity to 5-FU's DNA damage effects. Finally, we show that treatments upregulating ribosome biogenesis, including KDM2A inhibition, promote RNA-dependent cell killing by 5-FU, demonstrating the potential for combinatorial targeting of this ribosomal RNA damage response for improved cancer therapy.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID symptoms (i.e., experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 for 3 months post-COVID-19) affect individuals' health and their quality of life (QoL). However, the pathways through which it does so are not fully known. AIM: The present study examined the mediating roles of sleep quality, psychological distress, and self-stigma in the associations between long COVID symptoms and QoL among individuals with mental illness. METHOD: Individuals with mental illness (n = 333) were recruited from a psychiatric center in southern Taiwan to participate in the study. Data were collected regarding sleep quality, psychological distress, self-stigma, and QoL. Independent t-tests, Pearson correlations, and regression with Hayes' Process Macro were used to compare groups, examine relationships, and parallel mediation models, respectively. RESULTS: Participants with long COVID symptoms had significantly worse sleep quality, psychological distress, physical QoL, and psychological QoL compared to those without symptoms. There were significant relationships between sleep quality, psychological distress, self-stigma, and QoL. Sleep quality significantly mediated the associations between long COVID symptoms and physical and social QoL. Psychological distress significantly mediated the associations between long COVID symptoms and all domains of QoL, but not self-stigma. CONCLUSION: There are alternative pathways (e.g., sleep quality and psychological distress) through which long COVID symptoms may affect the QoL of individuals with mental illness. The findings suggest that individuals with long COVID symptoms have a higher chance of having poor QoL. Therefore, there may be the need for counseling and possible therapy for those who contract COVID-19, especially among individuals who already have mental illness.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the present study were to (i) re-evaluate and expand the psychometric properties of two weight stigma instruments-the Perceived Weight Stigma Scale (PWSS) and the Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire (WSSQ) among a large sample of adolescents using advanced psychometric methods and (ii) examine how the different types of weight stigma (i.e., PWSS and WSSQ) are associated with psychological distress. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: In September 2023, a cross-sectional survey utilising convenience sampling was used to recruit 9995 adolescents (mean age = 16.36 years [standard deviation = 0.78]; 57.8% males). They completed the PWSS, WSSQ, and a measure on psychological distress. The data were analysed using Rasch analysis, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), structural equation modelling (SEM), and network analysis. RESULTS: The CFA and Rasch model results showed acceptable psychometric properties regarding factor structure, factor loading, difficulty, and infit and outfit mean squares (except Items 4 and 7 of the PWSS). There was no substantial differential item functioning for any tested items across the sex and weight categories. The CFA and SEM results showed promising validity indices with significant associations between both weight stigma scales and psychological distress (i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress). Network analysis showed inter-variable connectivity between nodes PWSS3 ("People act as if they are afraid of you") and WSSQF7 ("I feel insecure about others' opinions of me"). CONCLUSIONS: Both weight stigma scales had acceptable psychometric properties and were significantly associated with psychological distress, although each assessed different types of weight stigma. This suggests that researchers and clinicians can use these scales to reliably and validly assess weight stigmas among adolescents.

Examining ways of reducing physical inactivity has been at the forefront of public health research. Moreover, valid and reliable scales are needed to objectively assess physical activity (PA) avoidance. Previous research has shown that experiencing weight stigma and physical appearance-related concerns are associated with physical inactivity. However, there is currently no Thai instrument that assesses physical inactivity in relation to weight stigma. Therefore, the present study examined the psychometric properties of the Thai version of the Tendency to Avoid Physical Activity and Sport Scale (TAPAS). Thai university students (N = 612) recruited via convenience sampling completed an online survey using SurveyMonkey between September 2022 and January 2023. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), multigroup CFA, and Pearson correlations (between TAPAS scores, age, body mass index, and time spent exercising) were used to analyze the data. The CFA showed robust psychometric properties for the Thai version of TAPAS regarding its unidimensional structure. The TAPAS was measurement invariant across sex, weight status, and daily hours of exercise. However, no significant Pearson correlations were found. In general, the results showed that the TAPAS is a good scale for assessing PA avoidance among Thai young adults across different sexes, weight status, and daily hours of exercise.

The critical role of the human gut microbiota in kidney stone formation remains largely unknown, due to the low taxonomic resolution of previous sequencing technologies. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the gut microbiota using high-throughput sequencing to provide valuable insights and identify potential bacterial species and metabolite roles involved in kidney stone formation. The overall gut bacterial community and its potential functions in healthy participants and patients were examined using PacBio sequencing targeting the full-length 16S rRNA gene, coupled with stone and statistical analyses. Most kidney stones comprised calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate (75%), pure calcium oxalate (20%), and calcium phosphate and magnesium phosphate (5%), with higher content of Ca (130,510.5 ± 108,362.7 ppm) followed by P (18,746.4 ± 23,341.2 ppm). The microbial community structure was found to be weaker in patients' kidney stone samples, followed by patients' stool samples, than in healthy participants' stool samples. The most abundant bacterial species in kidney stone samples was uncultured Morganella, whereas that in patient and healthy participant stool samples was Bacteroides vulgatus. Similarly, Akkermansia muciniphila was significantly enriched in patient stool samples at the species level, whereas Bacteroides plebeius was significantly enriched in kidney stone samples than that in healthy participant stool samples. Three microbial metabolic pathways, TCA cycle, fatty acid oxidation, and urea cycle, were significantly enriched in kidney stone patients compared to healthy participants. Inferring bacteria at the species level revealed key players in kidney stone formation, enhancing the clinical relevance of gut microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Problematic use of the internet (PUI) is prevalent, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Given the limited measures to assess specific types of PUI, which encompasses a broad spectrum of activities such as online gaming, social media use, pornography use, shopping, gambling, and web-streaming, Muller et al. (2022) developed the Assessment of Criteria for Specific Internet-use Disorders (ACSID-11) to comprehensively assess different types of PUI (i.e., gaming, shopping, social media use, gambling, and pornography use). The present study aimed to validate the Chinese ACSID-11 among adolescents incorporating cross-cultural adaptations. METHODS: Using forward-backward translation method, a culturally adapted version of the ACSID-11 was prepared. Then, a cross-sectional online survey was administered between September 8 and September 26, 2023. Adolescents, using a convenience sample (N = 11,492; mean age = 16.42 years [SD ± 0.91]; 59.1% male), were recruited from six schools to complete the translated ACSID-11, Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form (IGDS9-SF), Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS), and Smartphone Application Based Addiction Scale (SABAS) via an online platform. Pearson correlation coefficients assessed convergent/discriminant validity. Factor structure and measurement invariance were examined through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and multi-group CFA. Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega tested internal consistency. RESULTS: Associations between the ACSID-11 components and other scales supported convergent validity (i.e., ACSID-11 gaming scale with IGDS9-SF [0.37 ≤ r ≤ 0.41]; social networks use scale with BSMAS [0.24 ≤ r ≤ 0.31]) and discriminant validity (i.e., online gambling scale with BSMAS [0.16 ≤ r ≤ 0.19] and with SABAS [0.11 ≤ r ≤ 0.13]). A four-factor solution indicated good fit with comparative fit index (CFI) ranging from 0.982 to 0.958. The ACSID-11 was measurement invariant across sexes (∆CFI = -0.001 to 0.000) and different levels of related addictive behaviors (∆CFI = -0.001 to 0.000). Both Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega (0.63 to 0.97) were acceptable for both frequency and intensity of responses. CONCLUSIONS: The ACSID-11 is an appropriate scale to assess different kinds of PUI among Chinese adolescents and students. Psychometric assessment of the measure in other cultures and among clinical samples is recommended.

Heavy metals (HMs) contained terrestrial ecosystems are often significantly display the antibiotic resistome in the pristine area due to increasing pressure from anthropogenic activity, is complex and emerging research interest. This study investigated that impact of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co) concentrations in serpentine soil on the induction of antibiotic resistance genes and antimicrobial resistance within the native bacterial community as well as demonstrated their metabolic fingerprint. The full-length 16S-rRNA amplicon sequencing observed an increased abundance of Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota, and Acidobacteriota in serpentine soil. The microbial community in serpentine soil displayed varying preferences for different carbon sources, with some, such as carbohydrates and carboxylic acids, being consistently favored. Notably, 27 potential antibiotic resistance opportunistic bacterial genera have been identified in different serpentine soils. Among these, Lapillicoccus, Rubrobacter, Lacibacter, Chloroplast, Nitrospira, Rokubacteriales, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas were significantly enriched in high and medium HMs concentrated serpentine soil samples. Functional profiling results illustrated that vancomycin resistance pathways were prevalent across all groups. Additionally, beta-lactamase, aminoglycoside, tetracycline, and vancomycin resistance involving specific bio-maker genes (ampC, penP, OXA, aacA, strB, hyg, aph, tet(A/B), otr(C), tet(M/O/Q), van(A/B/D), and vanJ) were the most abundant and enriched in the HMs-contaminated serpentine soil. Overall, this study highlighted that heavy-metal enriched serpentine soil is potential to support the proliferation of bacterial antibiotic resistance in native microbiome, and might able to spread antibiotic resistance to surrounding environment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Psychosocial factors affect individuals' desire for physical activity. A newly developed instrument (Tendency to Avoid Physical Activity and Sport; TAPAS) has been designed to assess the avoidance of physical activity. Considering cultural differences could be decisive factors, the present study aimed to translate and validate the TAPAS into Chinese (Mandarin) for Taiwanese youths, and further cultural comparisons are expected. METHODS: Standard translation procedure (i.e., forward translation, back translation, and reconciliation) was used to translate the English TAPAS into the Chinese TAPAS. Following translation, 608 youths (mean [SD] age 29.10 [6.36] years; 333 [54.8%] women) participated in the study via a snowballing sampling method with an online survey. All participants completed the Chinese TAPAS and additional instruments assessing weight stigma and psychological distress. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to examine the factor structure of the Chinese TAPAS and multigroup CFA to examine measurement invariance across gender (men vs. women) and weight status (overweight vs. non-overweight). Pearson correlations were used to examine the concurrent validity; independent t-tests between gender groups and weight status groups were used to examine the known-group validity. RESULTS: Consistent with the English version, the Chinese TAPAS was found to have a one-factor structure evidenced by CFA results. The structure was invariant across gender and weight status groups evidenced by multigroup CFA results. Concurrent validity was supported by significant associations with the related constructs assessed (r = 0.326 to 0.676; p < 0.001). Known-group validity was supported by the significant differences in TAPAS total scores between gender and weight status groups (p = 0.004 and < 0.001; Cohen's d = 0.24 and 0.48). CONCLUSION: The Chinese version of the TAPAS is a valid and reliable instrument assessing individuals' avoidance of physical activity and sports due to underlying psychosocial issues among Taiwanese youths. It is anticipated to be applied within a large Asian population, as well as cross-cultural comparisons, for further explorations in health, behavioral and epidemiological research and practice.

Introduction: Degenerative lumbar disease (DLD) is a prevalent disorder that predominantly affects the elderly population, especially female. Extensive research has demonstrated that overweight individuals (categorized by body fat distribution) have a higher susceptibility to developing DLD and an increased risk of falling. However, there is limited research available on the standing balance and functional performance of overweight females with DLD. Aims: To determine the impact of body fat distribution on standing balance and functional performance in overweight females with DLD. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated thirty females with DLD were categorized into three types of body fat distribution based on body mass index (BMI) and waist-hip ratio, specifically as android-type, gynoid-type, and normal weight groups. In addition, a control group of ten age-matched females with normal weight was recruited. The Visual Analogue Scale, Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire, Cobb angle (Determined using x-ray), and body composition (Determined using the InBody S10), were conducted only on the DLD groups. All participants were assessed standing balance in the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions. The functional assessments included timed-up-and-go and 5-times-sit-to-stand tests. Results: There were 10 people in each group. Android-type (Age = 65.00 ± 6.34 years; BMI = 26.87 ± 2.05 kg/m2), Gynoid-type (Age = 65.60 ± 4.99 years; BMI = 26.60 ± 1.75 kg/m2), Normal weight (Age = 65.70 ± 5.92 years; BMI = 22.35 ± 1.26 kg/m2), and Control (Age = 65.00 ± 5.23 years; BMI = 22.60 ± 1.12 kg/m2). The android-type group had higher body fat, visceral fat, and lower muscle mass (p < 0.05), along with an increased Cobb angle (p < 0.05). They showed greater ellipse area, total excursion, and mean distance in the anteroposterior direction (p < 0.05). During the functional performance assessments, the android-type group had longer durations in both the 5-times-sit-to-stand and timed-up-and-go tasks (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our study found that android-type overweight individuals showed postural instability, reduced functional performance, and insufficient lower limb muscle strength and mass. These findings might help physical therapists in planning interventions, as they imply that patients with DLD may require specific types of standing balance training and lower extremities muscle-strengthening based on their body fat distribution. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we evaluated the role of prolonged progestin treatment on atypical endometrial hyperplasia (AEH) patients who did not achieve complete regression (CR) after at least 3 months of progestin treatment. Possible prognostic factors predicting disease regression and recurrence were also assessed. METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients who had histologically confirmed persistent disease after at least 3 months of progestin treatment at two tertiary centers in Korea and Taiwan. Clinicopathologic factors and clinical outcomes were obtained from medical records. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between covariates and the probability of CR and relapse. RESULTS: Fifty-two patients were included. Thirty-seven of 52 patients (71.2%) achieved CR after prolonged progestin treatment. Median time from starting progestin treatment to CR was 12.0 months. Daily administration of medroxyprogesterone acetate ≥200 mg or megestrol acetate ≥80 mg was associated with higher probability of regression. Nineteen of 37 patients (51.4%) experienced recurrence, with median time from CR to relapse of 15.0 months. Body mass index ≥27 was associated with higher relapse probability. Twelve of 16 patients with disease progression to endometrial carcinoma underwent surgery. The 12 cases had stage I tumors and lived without disease. CONCLUSION: Extension of progestin treatment course is feasible for AEH patients without an initial response to progestin. Higher daily progestin dosage was associated with higher probability of CR, and obesity was associated with higher risk of relapse. The patients without an initial response to progestins and whose AEH progressed to endometrial carcinoma had good prognoses.

BACKGROUND Clinical training for allied health trainees (AHTs) and postgraduate-year (PGY) doctors needed to go online during the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which may have caused academic stress and consequent outcomes among this cohort. MATERIAL AND METHODS To evaluate academic-related stress, clinical confidence, psychological distress, and insomnia, an online survey-based study was conducted among Taiwanese AHTs and PGY doctors between July and December, 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey included the 21-item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and self-designed questions. It was distributed using convenience sampling and snowball sampling and was completed by 522 participants. RESULTS Structural equational modelling showed that academic stress was negatively associated with clinical confidence (standardized coefficient [ß]=-0.382, p<0.001). Clinical confidence was negatively associated with psychological distress (ß=-0.397, p<0.001), which was associated with insomnia (ß=0.648, p<0.001). Additionally, clinical confidence and psychological distress were the significant mediators. Results indicated that higher academic stress was associated with higher level of insomnia via the mediation of clinical confidence and psychological distress. CONCLUSIONS Academic stress related to changes in clinical training may have led to insomnia among AHTs and PGY doctors during the pandemic. Factors to reduce academic stress should be investigated to promote good mental health while providing sufficient clinical training, especially during events that can cause increased stress (eg, epidemics, pandemics).

Mud volcanoes are dynamic geological features releasing methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and hydrocarbons, harboring diverse methane and hydrocarbon-degrading microbes. However, the potential application of these microbial communities in chlorinated hydrocarbons bioremediation purposes such as trichloroethylene (TCE) has not yet been explored. Hence, this study investigated the mud volcano's microbial diversity functional potentiality in TCE degradation as well as their eco-physiological profiling using metabolic activity. Geochemical analysis of the mud volcano samples revealed variations in pH, temperature, and oxidation-reduction potential, indicating diverse environmental conditions. The Biolog Ecoplate™ carbon substrates utilization pattern showed that the Tween 80 was highly consumed by mud volcanic microbial community. Similarly, MicroResp® analysis results demonstrated that presence of additive C-substrates condition might enhanced the cellular respiration process within mud-volcanic microbial community. Full-length 16 S rRNA sequencing identified Proteobacteria as the dominant phylum, with genera like Pseudomonas and Hydrogenophaga associated with chloroalkane degradation, and methanotrophic bacteria such as Methylomicrobium and Methylophaga linked to methane oxidation. Functional analysis uncovered diverse metabolic functions, including sulfur and methane metabolism and hydrocarbon degradation, with specific genes involved in methane oxidation and sulfur metabolism. These findings provide insights into the microbial diversity and metabolic capabilities of mud volcano ecosystems, which could facilitate their effective application in the bioremediation of chlorinated compounds.

Growing evidence suggests that the hydrochemical properties of geothermal fumaroles may play a crucial role in shaping the diversity and functions of microbial communities in various environments. In the present study, the impact of geothermal furaneols on the microbial communities and their metabolic functions across the rock-soil-plant continuum was explored considering varying distances from the fumarole source. The results revealed that bacterial phylum Proteobacteria was predominant in all sample types, except in the 10 m rock sample, irrespective of the sampling distance. Archaeal phyla, such as Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota, were more prevalent in rock and soil samples, whereas bacterial phyla were more prevalent in plant samples. Thermoacidophilic archaeons, including Picrophilus, Ferroplasma, and Thermogymnomonas were dominant in rocks and soil samples of 1 and 5 m distances; acidophilic mesophiles, including Ferrimicrobium and Granulicella were abundant in the rhizoplane samples, whereas rhizosphere-associated microbes including Pseudomonas, Pedobacter, Rhizobium, and Novosphingobium were found dominant in the rhizosphere samples. The functional analysis highlighted the higher expression of sulfur oxidative pathways in the rock and soil samples; dark iron oxidation and nitrate/nitrogen respiratory functions in the rhizosphere samples. The findings underscore microbial adaptations across the rock-soil-plant continuum, emphasizing the intricate relationship between geothermal fumaroles and microbial communities in adjacent ecosystems. These insights offer a crucial understanding of the evolution of microbial life and highlight their pivotal roles in shaping ecosystem dynamics and functions.

Anthropogenic activities and climate change profoundly impact water quality, leading to a concerning increase in the prevalence and abundance of bacterial pathogens across diverse aquatic environments. This rise has resulted in a growing challenge concerning the safety of water sources, particularly surface waters and marine environments. This comprehensive review delves into the multifaceted challenges presented by bacterial pathogens, emphasizing threads to human health within ground and surface waters, including marine ecosystems. The exploration encompasses the intricate survival mechanisms employed by bacterial pathogens and the proliferation of antimicrobial resistance, largely driven by human-generated antibiotic contamination in aquatic systems. The review further addresses prevalent pathogenic bacteria, elucidating associated risk factors, exploring their eco-physiology, and discussing the production of potent toxins. The spectrum of detection techniques, ranging from conventional to cutting-edge molecular approaches, is thoroughly examined to underscore their significance in identifying and understanding waterborne bacterial pathogens. A critical aspect highlighted in this review is the imperative for real-time monitoring of biomarkers associated with waterborne bacterial pathogens. This monitoring serves as an early warning system, facilitating the swift implementation of action plans to preserve and protect global water resources. In conclusion, this comprehensive review provides fresh insights and perspectives, emphasizing the paramount importance of preserving the quality of aquatic resources to safeguard human health on a global scale.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19-related stigmatization refers to COVID-19-related judgements by others that devalue the individual. Such stigmatization towards healthcare workers may cause psychological burden and negative consequences. Such stigmatization may have particularly overwhelmed allied health trainees (AHTs) and post-graduate year doctors (PGYDs) because they just started their medical career. Social support and resource support have been reported to benefit psychological health and reduce stigmatization. Therefore, the present study used a cross-sectional study design to investigate the association between perceived stigma, self-stigma, psychological distress, and negative outcomes (including emotional exhaustion, insomnia and suicidal ideation) among AHTs and PGYDs in Taiwan. METHODS: An online survey distributed between July and December, 2022 received 522 responses. Variables were assessed using the 21-item Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, Insomnia Severity Index and a series of self-designed questions to assess social support, resource support, perceived stigma, self-stigma, emotional exhaustion, and suicidal ideation. RESULTS: Structural equation modeling showed that perceived stigma was associated with self-stigma (standardized coefficient [ß] = 0.428, p < 0.001), and self-stigma was associated with psychological distress (ß = 0.197, p < 0.001), as well as being associated with emotional exhaustion, insomnia, and suicidal ideation (ß = 0.349, 0.556 and 0.212, all p-values < 0.001). While social support and resource support were negatively associated with perceived stigma (ß= - 0.175 and - 0.152, p < 0.01), additional associations were found between social support and emotional exhaustion (ß= - 0.093, p < 0.001), as well as between resource support and insomnia (ß= - 0.120, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that COVID-19 related stigmatization was correlated to the detrimental consequences of emotional exhaustion, insomnia and suicidal ideation. Clear paths regarding the associations of social support and resource support with the three negative associations were found as the possible solutions. Strategies to reduce the stigmatization and these negative outcomes, or improve the psychological health will benefit AHTs and PGYDs in maintaining a healthy mental status.

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effect of silver diammine fluoride (SDF) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of pink opaquer (PO) compared to resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) and conventional composite (COMP) on demineralized dentin, and also to investigate the mode of failure (MOF). Methods: Sixty extracted third molars were prepared, demineralized for 14 days, and divided into four groups: (1) COMP; (2) SDF+PO; (3) SDF+RMGI; and (4) SDF+COMP (restoration size: two by two mm). SBS, MOF, modified adhesive remnant index (MARI), and remnant adhesive volume (RAV) were evaluated using an Instron® machine, light microscopy, 3D digital scanner ( 3Shape©), and GeoMagic Wrap© software. Results: There was no significant difference in SBS (MPa) among the COMP mean??standard deviation (2.5±1.59), SDF+COMP (2.28±1.05), SDF+PO (3.31±2.63), and SDF+RMGI groups (3.74±2.34). There was no significant difference in MOF and MARI among the four groups (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in RAV (mm3) among the COMP (0.5±0.33), SDF+COMP (0.39±0.44), SDF+PO (0.42±0.38), and SDF+RMGI groups (0.42±0.38; P>0.05). A significant correlation existed between MOF and RAV (R equals 0.721; P<0.001). MOF, MARI, and RAV did not show any correlations with SBS (P>0.05). Conclusions: Silver diammine fluoride does not affect shear bond strength between carious dentinal surface and tooth color restorative materials. The amount of material left on the interface is not related to the amount of shear force needed to break the restoration.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) D) levels with bone mineral density (BMD), fracture risk, and bone metabolism. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study recruited menopausal females and males greater than or equal to 50 year old with osteoporosis/fractures between September 2016 and September 2021. Assessment included clinical data, 25(OH)D, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), procollagen type 1 amino-terminal propeptide (P1NP), carboxy-terminal collagen crosslinks (CTX), lateral thoracolumbar spine x-rays, and BMD. RESULTS: A total of 3003 individuals were stratified by 25(OH) D levels: 720 individuals (24%) <20 ng/mL, 1338 individuals (44.5%) 20 to 29 ng/mL, and 945 individuals (31.5%) ≥30 ng/mL. In unadjusted and multivariable models, BMD T-score, except spine, was significantly and positively associated with 25(OH)D levels. 25(OH) D levels were inversely associated with Fracture Risk Assessment Tool scores. Patients with 25(OH)D <20 ng/mL had significantly higher iPTH and bone turnover markers (P1NP and CTX) than patients with 25(OH)D â‰§20 ng/mL in all models. When analyzing bone-related markers and BMD, total hip and femoral neck BMD T-scores were positively correlated with 25(OH)D concentrations and BMI but negatively correlated with iPTH, P1NP, CTX, and age. In multivariate models with all bone-related markers, only 25(OH)D levels were significantly associated with total hip and femoral neck BMD. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D deficiency is significantly associated with decreased total hip and femoral neck BMD and increased fracture risk as assessed by Fracture Risk Assessment Tool. In those with osteoporosis/fractures, vitamin D is implicated in the causal relationship between bone remodeling and BMD. Assessing vitamin D status is imperative for those at risk for osteoporosis/fractures.
