Microsatellite instability (MSI) status is a prognostic biomarker for immunotherapy in certain types of cancers, such as colorectal cancers (CRCs) and endometrial cancers (ECs). Tumors that are categorized as having high MSI (MSI-H) express high levels of neoantigens for immune recognition. The typical MSI test measures the length of short mononucleotide repeats (SMR) poly(A) 21-27; however, a limitation of this test is the difficulty in determining the shift size, particularly in endometrial cancer. To investigate an MSI detection assay with improved performance, the present study analyzed the use of poly(A) 40-44 mononucleotide repeats to detect the MSI status of 100 patients with either CRC (n=50) or EC (n=50). Capillary electrophoresis was used to evaluate five long mononucleotide repeat (LMR) markers, including poly(A) 40-A, 40-B, 40-C, 40-D and 44. The concordance rate of the LMR-MSI assay compared with an immunohistochemistry MSI detection assay was 96.0 and 95.1% for CRCs and ECs respectively, with the detection limit of the LMR-MSI assay demonstrated to be 2.5% MSI-H in HCT116 colorectal carcinoma cell lines. The LMR-MSI assay yielded a 95.1% concordance rate in ECs compared with that in the SMR-MSI test (87.8%). The LMR-MSI test identified a significantly higher mean shift size (13 bp) in MSI-H tumors compared with the SMR-MSI test (10 bp), in both EC and CRC tissue samples. Together, the present study suggested that the LMR-MSI test could potentially be a sensitive and practical technology for molecular laboratory testing, particularly in the use of immunotherapy for patients with CRCs and ECs.

To investigate the status quo and influencing factors of general postpartum well-being in primiparas, analyze its correlation with postpartum depression, and provide a theoretical foundation for enhancing the postpartum well-being of primiparas. From the start of November 2021 to the end of December 2021, the General Information Questionnaire, General Well-Being Scale, and the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale were used to survey primiparas in a tertiary hospital, and the correlation between general well-being and postpartum depression was analyzed. We surveyed a total of 225 primiparas. The average score for general well-being in primiparas was 77.84 ±â€…6.83, and the total score for postpartum depression was 9.11 ±â€…2.51. Confinement location, planned pregnancy, pregnancy complications, neonatal sex, medical expenses, etc, had statistically significant effects on the general well-being scores (P < .05), whereas per capita monthly income, pregnancy complications, maternal and infant care skills, and medical expenses had statistically significant effects on postpartum depression scores (P < .05). Postpartum depression scores were negatively correlated with general well-being, health anxiety, energy, sad or happy mood, relaxation, and tension. There is a negative correlation between the general well-being of primiparas and postpartum depression, suggesting that in clinical care, the focus should be on primiparas with pregnancy complications, and psychological counseling should be provided in advance to prevent postpartum depression and the resulting decrease in well-being.

Various types of human cancer may develop aberrant trophoblastic differentiation, including histological changes and altered expression of ß­human chorionic gonadotropin (ß­hCG). Aberrant trophoblastic differentiation in epithelial cancer is usually associated with poor differentiation, tumor metastasis, unfavorable prognosis and treatment resistance. Since ß­hCG­targeting vaccines have failed in an early phase II trial, it is crucial to obtain a better understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of trophoblastic differentiation in human cancer. The present review summarizes the clinical and translational research on this topic with the aim of accelerating the development of an effective targeted therapy. Ectopic expression of ß­hCG promotes proliferation, migration, invasion, vasculogenesis and epithelial­mesenchymal transition (EMT) in vitro, and enhances metastatic and tumorigenic capabilities in vivo. Signaling cascades modulated by ß­hCG include the TGF­ß receptor pathway, EMT­related pathways, the c­MET receptor tyrosine kinase and mitogen­activated protein kinase/ERK pathways, and the SMAD2/4 pathway. Taken together, these findings indicated that TGF­ß receptors, c­MET and ERK1/2 are potential therapeutic targets. Nevertheless, further investigation on the molecular basis of aberrant trophoblastic differentiation is mandatory to improve the design of precision therapy for this aggressive type of human cancer.

Epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) are the first-line regimen for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with EGFR mutations. However, false-negative results are occasionally observed, even with FDA-approved molecular tests. Such examples in have been reported in our pilot study showing a slightly upward-shifted amplification curve using commercial reverse transcription-quantitative (RT-q)PCR. Verification using peptide nucleic acid (PNA) clamping-sequencing, which has a sensitivity of ~0.1%, may allow better prediction of which patients will benefit from EGFR-TKI therapy. To confirm this hypothesis, samples were prospectively collected from 1,783 lung cancer cases diagnosed in National Cheng Kung University Hospital between 2012-2018. An independent lung cancer cohort of 1,944 cases was also recruited from other hospitals. The clinical significance of mutant-enriched PCR with PNA-sequencing was analyzed and patient outcomes were followed. A total of 17 of 34 cases (50%) were found to harbor EGFR mutations by PNA-sequencing. A total of 22 cases were discovered in the independent lung cancer cohort, and 14 of these (63.6%) cases had EGFR mutations. TKIs were administered to 14 of the 17 mutation-positive patients, and a partial response was observed in 4 cases and stable disease in 10 cases. Patients with EGFR mutations receiving a TKI regimen had a longer overall survival (OS) (median: 40.0 vs. 10.0 months) compared with those without treatment. The difference in OS was not significant. Based on the results of the present study, combining RT-qPCR with PNA-sequencing may be a practical supplementary technology in a clinical molecular laboratory for a subset of lung cancer patients in selection of EGFR TKI therapy.

Induction of DNA damage response (DDR) to ensure accurate duplication of genetic information is crucial for maintaining genome integrity during DNA replication. Cellular senescence is a DDR mechanism that prevents the proliferation of cells with damaged DNA to avoid mitotic anomalies and inheritance of the damage over cell generations. Human WWOX gene resides within a common fragile site FRA16D that is preferentially prone to form breaks on metaphase chromosome upon replication stress. We report here that primary Wwox knockout (Wwox-/-) mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) and WWOX-knockdown human dermal fibroblasts failed to undergo replication-induced cellular senescence after multiple passages in vitro. Strikingly, by greater than 20 passages, accelerated cell cycle progression and increased apoptosis occurred in these late-passage Wwox-/- MEFs. These cells exhibited γH2AX upregulation and microsatellite instability, indicating massive accumulation of nuclear DNA lesions. Ultraviolet radiation-induced premature senescence was also blocked by WWOX knockdown in human HEK293T cells. Mechanistically, overproduction of cytosolic reactive oxygen species caused p16Ink4a promoter hypermethylation, aberrant p53/p21Cip1/Waf1 signaling axis and accelerated p27Kip1 protein degradation, thereby leading to the failure of senescence induction in Wwox-deficient cells after serial passage in culture. We determined that significantly reduced protein stability or loss-of-function A135P/V213G mutations in the DNA-binding domain of p53 caused defective induction of p21Cip1/Waf1 in late-passage Wwox-/- MEFs. Treatment of N-acetyl-L-cysteine prevented downregulation of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors and induced senescence in Wwox-/- MEFs. Our findings support an important role for fragile WWOX gene in inducing cellular senescence for maintaining genome integrity during DDR through alleviating oxidative stress.

Microsatellite instability (MSI) is the primary predictive biomarker for therapeutic efficacies of cancer immunotherapies. Establishment of the MSI detection methods with high sensitivity and accessibility is important. Because MSI is mainly caused by defects in DNA mismatch repair (MMR), immunohistochemical (IHC) staining for the MMR proteins has been widely employed to predict the responses to immunotherapies. Thus, due to the high sensitivity of PCR, the MSI-PCR analysis has also been recommended as the primary approach as MMR IHC. This study aimed to develop a sensitive and convenient platform for daily MSI-PCR services. The routine workflow used a non-labeling QIAxcel capillary electrophoresis system which did not need the fluorescence labeling of the DNA products or usage of a multi-color fluorescence reader. Furthermore, the 15 and 1000 bp size alignment markers were used to precisely detect the size of the DNA product. A cohort of 336 CRC cases was examined by MSI-PCR on the five mononucleotide MSI markers recommended by ESMO. The PCR products were analyzed in the screening gels, followed by high-resolution gel electrophoresis for confirmation if needed. In the MSI-PCR tests, 90.1% (303/336) cases showed clear major shift patterns in the screening gels, and only 33 cases had to be re-examined using the high-resolution gels. The cohort was also analyzed by MMR IHC is, which revealed 98.5% (331/336) concordance with MSI-PCR. In the five discordant cases, 4 (3 MSI-L and 1 MSS) showed MSH6 loss. Besides, one case exhibited MSI-H but no loss in the MMR IHC. Further NGS analysis, in this case, found that missense and frameshift mutations in the PMS2 and MSH6 genes occurred, respectively. In conclusion, the non-labeling MSI-PCR capillary electrophoresis revealed high concordance with the MMR IHC analysis and is cost- and time-effective. Therefore, it shall be highly applicable in clinical laboratories.

Clonality assessment, which can detect neoplastic T cells by identifying the uniquely recombined T-cell receptor (TCR) genes, provides important support in the diagnosis of T-cell lymphoma (TCL). BIOMED-2 is the gold standard clonality assay and has proven to be effective in European TCL patients. However, we failed to prove its sensitivity in Taiwanese TCL patients, especially based on the TCRß gene. To explore potential impact of genetic background in the BIOMED-2 test, we analyzed TCRß sequences of 21 healthy individuals and two TCL patients. This analysis suggests that genetic variations in the BIOMED-2 primer sites could not explain the difference in sensitivity. The BIOMED-2 test results of the two TCL patients were positive and negative, respectively. Interestingly, a higher percentage (>81%) of non-recombined TCRß sequences was observed in the test-negative patient than those of the test-positive patient and all healthy individuals (13~66%). The result suggests a new TCR target for enhancing TCL diagnosis. To further explore the hypothesis, we proposed a cost-effective digital PCR assay that quantifies the relative abundance of non-recombined TCRß sequences containing a J2-2P~J2-3 segment. With the digital PCR assay, bone marrow specimens from TCL patients (n=9) showed a positive outcome (i.e., the relative abundance of the J2-2P~J2-3 sequences ≧5%), whereas non-TCL patients (n=6) gave a negative result. As five of nine TCL patients had a negative BIOMED-2 test result, the J2-2P~J2-3 sequences may improve TCL detection. This is the first report showing the capability of characterizing non-recombined TCR sequences as a supplementary strategy for the BIOMED-2 clonality test.

Neoadjuvant immunotherapy and chemotherapy have improved the major pathological response (MPR) in patients with early-stage operable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study aimed to assess whether the presence of targetable driver mutations affects the efficacy of the combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy. We enrolled patients with early-stage operable NSCLC who received preoperative neoadjuvant therapy between January 1, 2017, and December 30, 2020. Neoadjuvant therapy was delivered with platinum-doublet chemotherapy; moreover, pembrolizumab was added at the attending physician's discretion based on patient's request. Pathological responses were assessed; moreover, disease-free survival was estimated. Next-generation sequencing was performed in case sufficient preoperative biopsy specimens were obtained. We included 23 patients; among them, 11 received a combination of neoadjuvant immunotherapy and chemotherapy while 12 received neoadjuvant chemotherapy alone. The MPR and pathological complete response rates were 54.5% and 27.3%, respectively, in patients who received a combination of neoadjuvant immunotherapy and chemotherapy. These rates were significantly higher than those in patients who only received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Three patients in the combination group experienced disease recurrence during the follow-up period even though two of them showed an MPR. These three patients had targetable driver mutations, including an EGFR exon 20 insertion, EGFR exon 21 L858R substitution, and MET exon 14 skipping. Only one patient who remained disease-free had a targetable driver mutation. Among patients with early-stage operable NSCLC requiring neoadjuvant therapy, comprehensive genomic profiling is crucial before the administration of the combination of neoadjuvant immunotherapy and chemotherapy.

This study aimed to explore which age group out of the patients in quarantine wards with novel coronavirus pneumonia is the most susceptible to anxiety. The data of 32 Covid-19 patients isolated in the quarantine wards of the second Infectious Diseases Department of Baoding Hospital and 71 Covid-19 patients in Tangshan City Infectious Disease Hospital from January 24th to March 5th, 2020, a total of 103 patients, were analyzed. Among these patients, 97 isolated patients were scored with a self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) score seven days after quarantine, and the correlation between age and score was analyzed. These 97 isolated patients were then divided into three groups according to age: group A (up to 35 years old), group B (36-60 years), and group C (over 60 years). One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the scores among groups. The Q-test was used for pairwise comparison.P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.There was a negative correlation between age and SAS score in isolated Covid-19 patients, and the differences in the score among groups were statistically significant. Patients under 35 years old were more prone to anxiety when they were isolated for seven days. Isolated patients aged up to 35 years old need more attention from quarantine medical staff, communication should be strengthened, and psychological intervention from psychotherapists should be given if necessary.

Approximately 5-7% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cases harbor an anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion gene and may benefit from ALK inhibitor therapy. To detect ALK fusion genes, we developed a novel test using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the ALK kinase domain (KD). Since ALK expression is mostly silenced in the adult with the exception of neuronal tissue, the normal lung tissue, mesothelial lining, and inflammatory cells are devoid of ALK transcript, making ALK KD RT-PCR an ideal surrogate test for ALK fusion transcripts in lung or pleural effusion. The test was designed with a short PCR product (197 bp) to work for both malignant pleural effusion (MPE) and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) NSCLC samples. Using ALK IHC as a reference, the sensitivity of the test was 100% for both MPE and FFPE. The specificity was 97.6% for MPE and 97.4% for FFPE. Two false positive cases were found. One was a metastatic brain lesion which should be avoided in the future due to intrinsic ALK expression in the neuronal tissue. The other one resulted from ALK gene amplification. Due to potential false positivity, subsequent confirmation tests such as fluorescence in situ hybridization or multiplex PCR would be preferable. Nevertheless, the test is simple and inexpensive with no false negativity, making it a desirable screening test. It also offers an advantage over multiplex RT-PCR with the capability to detect novel ALK fusions. Indeed through the screening test, we found a novel ALK fusion partner (sperm antigen with calponin homology and coiled-coil domains 1 like gene, SPECC1L) with increased sensitivity to crizotinib in vitro. In summary, a novel RNA-based ALK KD analysis was developed for ALK rearrangement screening in MPE and FFPE specimens of NSCLC. This simple inexpensive test can be implemented as routine diagnostics.

Targeted therapy with combined dabrafenib and trametinib has been proven to provide clinical benefits in patients with NSCLC with a BRAF V600E mutation. Nevertheless, the treatment strategy for patients with NSCLC with BRAF non-V600E mutations remains limited. Here, we present a patient with NSCLC with a BRAF K601E mutation, a class II BRAF mutation, who had a durable response to targeted therapy with combined dabrafenib and trametinib.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a common tumor in China and has become a public health problem in modern society. Stress plays an important role in the occurrence and progression of cancer. At present, the current situation of stress on breast cancer survivors (BCSs) in China has not been fully understood. This study aims to explore the stress and coping strategies of Chinese BCSs, which provide suggestions to help BCSs reduce stress. METHODS: Sixty-three BCSs from the Shanghai Cancer Rehabilitation Club in China were included in this study and were divided into eight focus groups. These were transcribed verbatim, coded using thematic analysis and analyzed using NVivo 11. RESULTS: Three themes were extracted from the data to address our research objectives: stress, coping strategies and expectations. The stress of BCSs included psychological stress, stress caused by physical pain, economic stress, stress caused by the change of life status, and stress caused by information overload; the coping strategies included self-strategies and help from others; from the perspective of the survivors, they put forward their expectations for both the society and themselves. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that BCSs face a variety of stress. In the face of stress, BCSs need comprehensive support, including social and family support to cope with stressors. The findings from this study provide evidence for improving the quality of life among BCSs.

This study aims to investigate the serial multiple mediation of physical activity and perceived stress in the relationship between individual social capital and quality of life (QOL) in breast cancer survivors (BCSs). This study was conducted among 520 BCSs between March and April 2017 in Shanghai, China. Data were collected using the Individual Social Capital Scale, the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II, the Perceived Stress Scale-14 and the EORTC QLQ-C30. Ordinary least-squares regression and the bootstrap method was used to test the significance of the serial multiple mediation model. The serial-multiple mediations of physical activity and perceived stress were found significant in the relationship of QOL with all five dimensions of individual social capital. The separate mediations of two single mediating variables were found significant in the relationship of QOL with control over life and feeling about the community. In the relationship of QOL with social participation, social network and social support, the separate mediation of physical activity was significant, while the separate mediation of perceived stress was not significant. A multidisciplinary team approach and a variety of delivery systems are needed to address the social, physical and psychological issues for improving QOL among BCSs.

Electric field-induced release and measurement (EFIRM) is a novel, plate-based, liquid biopsy platform capable of detecting circulating tumor DNA containing EGFR mutations directly from saliva and plasma in both early- and late-stage patients with non-small-cell lung cancer. We investigated the properties of the target molecule for EFIRM and determined that the platform preferentially detects single-stranded DNA molecules. We then investigated the properties of the EFIRM assay and determined the linearity, linear range, precision, and limit of detection for six different EGFR variants (the four most common g.Exon19del variants), p.T790M, and p.L858R). The limit of detection was in single-digit copy number for the latter two mutations, and the limit of detection for Exon19del was 5000 copies. Following these investigations, technical validations were performed for four separate EFIRM liquid biopsy assays, qualitative and quantitative assays for both saliva and plasma. We conclude that EFIRM liquid biopsy is an assay platform that interrogates a biomarker not targeted by any other extant platform (namely, circulating single-stranded DNA molecules). The assay has acceptable performance characteristics in both quantitative and qualitative assays on both saliva and plasma.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity and good nutrition are important behavioral factors in promoting health and preventing disease. It is important to understand the factors affecting physical activity and nutrition. The purpose of this study was to explore whether social capital has an effect on physical activity and nutrition, and whether health literacy plays a mediating role between social capital and physical activity as well as nutrition. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed in a certain district of Shanghai in March and April 2017. Data was collected using a self-reported questionnaire, which included questions on sociodemographic characteristics, social capital, health literacy and health-promoting lifestyle profile-II. Health-promoting lifestyle profile-II measures the behaviours or habits of physical activity and healthy nutrition. An explore factor analysis of the principal components with varimax rotation was carried out on the social capital scale. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize the sociodemographic of participants. Mediation analysis was performed using the bootstrapping tests to examine whether health literacy mediate the relationship between social capital and physical activity as well as nutrition. RESULTS: The explore factor analysis results showed that social capital has five dimensions, namely social participation, social support, social network, control over life and feelings about the community. There is a positive correlation between social capital, health literacy, physical activity and nutrition. The correlation coefficient varied from 0.135 to 0.594. Mediation analysis demonstrated health literacy played a partial mediating effect between social capital and physical activity as well as nutrition. In the relationship between physical activity and social capital, the indirect effect of health literacy accounted for 8.20 to 12.65% of the total effect. In the relationship between nutrition and social capital, the mediation effect of health literacy accounted for 4.93 to 12.71% of the total effect. CONCLUSION: Social capital can promote physical activity and nutrition by disseminating health information. Enhancing the social capital of residents will help increase physical activity and develop healthy eating habits. Attention should also be paid to the improvement of residents' health literacy.

Third-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) were developed to overcome T790M-mediated resistance to earlier generations of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-targeted TKIs. We compared four well-established and one in-house method for the analysis of the EGFR T790M mutation in plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA), in hope to find a better way to select non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients appropriate for 3rd-generation TKI therapy. For sensitivity levels of each method, plasmid DNA with EGFR T790M mutations was serially diluted with cfDNA from healthy controls with wild type EGFR. The clinical performance was analyzed in a clinical cohort of EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC patients with acquired EGFR TKI resistance (n = 40). All methods except the therascreen kit (Qiagen) had a sensitivity level of 10 copies of T790M plasmid DNA in the spiked specimen. The detection rates of the EGFR T790M mutation in plasma cfDNA from the clinical cohort were 42.5, 35, 32.5, 22.5, and 17.5% for the in-house ARMS method, Bio-Rad droplet digital PCR, PANAMutyper, Therascreen EGFR Plasma RGQ PCR Kit and Cobas EGFR Mutation kit (with suboptimal template amounts), respectively. Osimertinib was given to 17 of 20 patients with EGFR T790M mutations. The best treatment responses, based on the RECIST criteria, included 6 partial responses (PR) and 7 stable diseases (SD). The PANAMutyper and the Bio-Rad droplet digital PCR were comparable, the Cobas EGFR Mutation kit required significantly more template for testing. The best combination would be the in-house ARMS method plus the PANAMutyper or Bio-Rad droplet digital PCR, which would have a detection rate of 50% (20/40) and a disease control rate of 76% (13/17).

BACKGROUND: To establish a novel rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) complicated with prior venous stagnation, and to investigate the role of cerebral venous drainage in neural injury after acute cerebral infarction. NEW METHOD: Eighteen SD rats were randomly divided into two groups: control group and jugular vein ligation group. The left jugular vein ligation was performed to produce the jugular venous stagnation. In the control group, the jugular vein was exposed but not ligated. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured through laser speckle imaging before and after the surgery. At 1 week after the surgery, CBF was again measured and then a left MCAO was performed in both groups. At 24 h after MCAO, neurological deficit scoring was performed and the infarct volume was measured by 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, a significant decrease in the CBF level was observed immediately after the ligation. A moderate recovery in CBF level was observed at 1 week after the ligation. The neurological deficit scores were significantly higher in the ligation group than in the control group at 24 h after the MCAO. Additionally, the volume of cerebral infarction increased significantly in the ligation group compared with that in the control group at the 24 h after MCAO. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S) AND CONCLUSIONS: The novel rat model of cerebral artery occlusion complicated with long-term unilateral venous stagnation indicates cerebral venous drainage impairment may aggravate behavioral impairment and increase infarct volume after cerebral infarction.

Human tongue cancer (TC) is an aggressive malignancy with a very poor prognosis. There is an urgent need to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in TC progression. mRNA expression profiles play a vital role in the exploration of cancer-related genes. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to identify the progression associated candidate genes of TC by bioinformatics analysis. Five microarray datasets of TC samples were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and the data of 133 TC patients were screened from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) database. The integrated analysis of five microarray datasets and the RNA sequencing data of TC samples in TCGA-HNSC was performed to obtain 1023 overlapping differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in TC and adjacent normal tissue (ANT) samples. Next, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis was conducted to enrich the significant pathways of the 1023 DEGs and PI3KAkt signaling pathway (P=0.011) was selected to be the candidate pathway. A total of 23 DEGs with |log2 fold change (FC)| ≥1.0 in phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-serine/threonine kinase (PI3K-Akt) signaling pathway were subjected to survival analysis of 125 eligible TC samples in TCGA database, indicating increased integrin-α3 gene (ITGA3) expression was significantly associated with poorer prognosis. Taken together, our study suggested ITGA3 may facilitate the development of TC via activating PI3K-Akt signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Stomach cancer survivors (SCS) often carry the dual burden of the cancer itself and other comorbidities; meanwhile, they are highly motivated to seek health advice about lifestyles to improve their health and quality of life (QOL). The associations of the comorbidity and the consumption of vegetable and fruit with QOL remain even less clear among the SCS. This study aimed to investigate the associations of comorbidities and consumption of fruit and vegetable with QOL among SCS. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 969 SCS between April and July 2015 in Shanghai, People's Republic of China. Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire, which included questions on sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidities and fruit and vegetable consumption, and a simplified Chinese version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment quality of life version 3 (EORTC QLQ-C30) questionnaire. In order to mitigate the bias caused by confounding factors, multiple linear regression models were employed to calculate the adjusted means of QOL scores. RESULTS: The proportion of participants without any comorbidity was only 23.3%, and the most common comorbidity among SCS was digestive diseases (49.8%). Participants with comorbidity generally reported lower scores for global health and functioning subscales and higher scores for symptom in EORTC QLQ-C30 compared to participants without comorbidity, indicating poorer QOL. Higher scores in most functioning subscales and lower scores in some symptoms subscales were found in participants (38.7%) who ate more than 250 g vegetables every day, compared to participants with less vegetable consumption, and in participants (58.1%) who ate fruit every day, compared to participants who didn't eat fruit every day indicating better QOL. CONCLUSIONS: The comorbidities are common health problems among SCS and have significantly negative influence on QOL, and participants with comorbidities generally reported lower QOL scores. The enough vegetables and fruit consumption are positively associated with QOL of SCS. These findings suggested that a multidisciplinary team approach and a variety of delivery systems are needed to address the medical, psychosocial, and lifestyle components for enriching patient-centered care among SCS.
