RESUMEN

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard in determining efficacy of cancer screening tests. Yet, systematic differences between RCT and the general populations eligible for screening raise concerns about the generalizability and relevance of RCT findings to guide the development and dissemination of cancer screening programs. Observational studies from clinical practice settings have documented selective uptake in screening - i.e., variation across subgroups regarding who is screened and not screened - as well as suboptimal adherence to screening recommendations, including follow-up of positive findings with subsequent imaging studies and diagnostic invasive procedures. When the effectiveness of a screening intervention varies across subgroups, and there is selective uptake and suboptimal adherence to screening in clinical practice relative to that in the RCT, the effects of screening reported in RCTs are not expected to generalize to clinical practice settings. Understanding the impacts of selective uptake and suboptimal adherence on estimates of the effectiveness of cancer screening in clinical practice will generate evidence that can be used to inform future screening recommendations and enhance shared decision-making tools.

OBJECTIVES: The antisaccades (AS) task is considered a reliable indicator of inhibitory control of eye movements in humans. Achieving good AS performance requires efficient cognitive processes that are sensitive to changes in brain structure. White matter hyperintensities (WMH) can cause subcortical-cortical dysconnectivity, affecting diverse cognitive domains. Thus, the AS task was investigated in patients with WMH in cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). METHODS: In this retrospective study, 75 participants with WMH, determined by neuroimaging standards for CSVD research, were admitted to the Department of Neurology of Beijing Luhe Hospital, Capital Medical University from January 2021 to December 2022. All subjects underwent the AS task, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and 3.0T brain MRI. Additionally, 61 healthy subjects were recruited to characterize WMH profiles. RESULTS: Compared to the control group, patients with WMH had a significantly increased AS error rate (49.81%, p = 0.001) and lower gain (76.00%, p = 0.042). The AS error rate was significantly higher in patients with WMH in the frontal lobe than in those without WMH (p = 0.004). After adjusting for confounders (age), a positive correlation was found between the AS error rate and MoCA scores for patients with WMH (coefficient = 0.262, p = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with WMH due to CSVD exhibited abnormal AS performances, particularly in the frontal lobe. The eye movement paradigms, the new diagnostic forms in neurology, can be utilized to investigate the distributed cortical and subcortical systems involved in cognitive control processes, offering simple, well-tolerated and highly sensitive advantages over traditional measures.

Photovoltaic (PV) heating is a promising technology for achieving fossil fuel-free heating and carbon neutrality in the building sector. Cost-effective energy storage plays a critical role in PV heating to solve the temporal mismatch between supply and demand. Herein, we propose the concept of using a building envelope as an active energy-storage device for a PV heating system, thus transforming the building envelope into a thermal battery. Experimental results show that the energy storage capacity of 142 kW h/m2, which is higher than that of conventional thermal storage systems. We developed a top-down macro performance assessment model to quantify the contribution of a PV heating system using a building envelope as energy storage. By our estimation, the envelope-embedded system can reduce heating-related CO2 emissions by 7435.7 tons annually in northern China. Our study provides insights into innovative energy-saving building energy storage systems that can help achieve global carbon neutrality and sustainability.

PURPOSE: Mortality data can complement primary end points from cancer clinical trials. Yet, identifying deaths after trial completion is challenging, as timely and comprehensive vital status data are unavailable in the United States. We developed and evaluated a multisource approach to capture death data after clinical trial completion. METHODS: Individuals age 70 years and older with incurable solid tumors or lymphoma and ≥1 aging-related condition were enrolled from October 2014 to March 2019 (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02107443 and NCT02054741). Participants provided consent to link trial information to external sources. We developed a stepped approach for extended death capture using (1) active trial follow-up up to 1 year, (2) linkage to the National Death Index (NDI), and (3) obituary searches, thus generating a 5-year survival curve. In a random sample of 50 participants who died during trial follow-up, we estimated sensitivity of death data using NDI and obituary sources and computed survival times by data source. RESULTS: The two trials enrolled 1,169 participants; mean age was 76 years; 46% were female; and gastrointestinal cancer (30%) and lung cancer (26%) were the most common cancer types. Across data sources, maximum follow-up was >7 years; 5-year survival was 18%. In total, there were 841 deaths: 603 identified during trial follow-up; 199 from the NDI; and 39 from obituary searches. The sensitivity for death capture was 92% for the NDI and 94% for the obituary searches compared with the trial data, and computed survival times were similar across data sources. CONCLUSION: Extending clinical trial mortality follow-up through linkage with external data sources was feasible and accurate. Future cancer clinical trials should collect necessary consent and patient identifiers for vital status linkages that can enhance understanding of longer-term outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia worldwide. Catheter ablation has become a crucial treatment for AF. However, there is a possibility of atrial fibrillation recurrence after catheter ablation. Our study sought to elucidate the role of lncRNA‒mRNA regulatory networks in late AF recurrence after catheter ablation. METHODS: We conducted RNA sequencing to profile the transcriptomes of 5 samples from the presence of recurrence after AF ablation (P-RAF) and 5 samples from the absence of recurrence after AF ablation (A-RAF). Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and long noncoding RNAs (DE-lncRNAs) were analyzed using the DESeq2 R package. The functional correlations of the DEGs were assessed through Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses. A protein‒protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed using STRING and Cytoscape. We also established a lncRNA‒mRNA regulatory network between DE-lncRNAs and DEGs using BEDTools v2.1.2 software and the Pearson correlation coefficient method. To validate the high-throughput sequencing results of the hub genes, we conducted quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT‒PCR) experiments. RESULTS: A total of 28,528 mRNAs and 42,333 lncRNAs were detected. A total of 96 DEGs and 203 DE-lncRNAs were identified between the two groups. GO analysis revealed that the DEGs were enriched in the biological processes (BPs) of "regulation of immune response" and "regulation of immune system process", the cellular components (CCs) of "extracellular matrix" and "cell‒cell junction", and the molecular functions (MFs) of "signaling adaptor activity" and "protein-macromolecule adaptor activity". According to the KEGG analysis, the DEGs were associated with the "PI3K-Akt signaling pathway" and "MAPK signaling pathway." Nine hub genes (MMP9, IGF2, FGFR1, HSPG2, GZMB, PEG10, GNLY, COL6A1, and KCNE3) were identified through the PPI network. lncRNA-TMEM51-AS1-201 was identified as a core regulator in the lncRNA‒mRNA regulatory network, suggesting its potential impact on the recurrence of AF after catheter ablation through the regulation of COL6A1, FGFR1, HSPG2, and IGF2. CONCLUSIONS: The recurrence of atrial fibrillation after catheter ablation may be associated with immune responses and fibrosis, with the extracellular matrix playing a crucial role. TMEM51-AS1-201 has been identified as a potential key target for AF recurrence after catheter ablation.

Introduction: Bacterial biofilm is a well-known characteristic that plays important roles in diverse physiological functions, whereas the current intrinsic regulatory mechanism of its formation is still largely unknown. Methods: In the present study, a label-free based quantitative proteomics technology was conducted to compare the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) between ΔuidR and the wild-type strain in the biofilm state. Results: The results showed that the deletion of gene uidR encoding a TetR transcriptional regulator significantly increased the biofilm formation in Aeromonas hydrophila. And there was a total of 220 DEPs, including 120 up-regulated proteins and 100 down-regulated proteins between ΔuidR and the wild-type strain based on the quantitative proteomics. Bioinformatics analysis suggested that uidR may affect bacterial biofilm formation by regulating some related proteins in glyoxylic acid and dicarboxylic acid pathway. The expressions of selected proteins involved in this pathway were further confirmed by q-PCR assay, and the results was in accordance with the quantitative proteomics data. Moreover, the deletion of four genes (AHA_3063, AHA_3062, AHA_4140 and aceB) related to the glyoxylic acid and dicarboxylic acid pathway lead to a significant decrease in the biofilm formation. Discussion: Thus, the results indicated that uidR involved in the regulatory of bacterial biofilm formation, and it may provide a potential target for the drug development and a new clue for the prevention of pathogenic A. hydrophila in the future.

The substantial release of NH3 during composting leads to nitrogen (N) losses and poses environmental hazards. Additives can mitigate nitrogen loss by adsorbing NH3/NH4, adjusting pH, and enhancing nitrification, thereby improving compost quality. Herein, we assessed the effects of combining bacterial inoculants (BI) (1.5%) with tricalcium phosphate (CA) (2.5%) on N retention, organic N conversion, bacterial biomass, functional genes, network patterns, and enzyme activity during kitchen waste (KW) composting. Results revealed that adding of 1.5%/2.5% (BI + CA) significantly (p < 0.05) improved ecological parameters, including pH (7.82), electrical conductivity (3.49 mS/cm), and N retention during composting. The bacterial network properties of CA (265 node) and BI + CA (341 node) exhibited a substantial niche overlap compared to CK (210 node). Additionally, treatments increased organic N and total N (TN) content while reducing NH4+-N by 65.42% (CA) and 77.56% (BI + CA) compared to the control (33%). The treatments, particularly BI + CA, significantly (p < 0.05) increased amino acid N, hydrolyzable unknown N (HUN), and amide N, while amino sugar N decreased due to bacterial consumption. Network analysis revealed that the combination expanded the core bacterial nodes and edges involved in organic N transformation. Key genes facilitating nitrogen mediation included nitrate reductase (nasC and nirA), nitrogenase (nifK and nifD), and hydroxylamine oxidase (hao). The structural equation model suggested that combined application (CA) and microbial inoculants enhance enzyme activity and bacterial interactions during composting, thereby improving nitrogen conversion and increasing the nutrient content of compost products.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is associated with poor outcomes in surgical patients including kidney transplant (KT) recipients. Transplant centers that measure frailty have better pre- and postoperative outcomes. However, clinical utility of existing tools is low due to time constraints. To address this major barrier to implementation in the preoperative evaluation of patients, we developed an abridged frailty phenotype. METHODS: The abridged frailty phenotype was developed by simplifying the 5 physical frailty phenotype (PFP) components in a two-center prospective cohort of 3 220 KT candidates and tested for efficiency (time to completion) in 20 candidates evaluation (January 2009 to March 2020). We examined area under curve (AUC) and Cohen's kappa agreement to compare the abridged assessment with the PFP. We compared waitlist mortality risk (competing risks models) by frailty using the PFP and abridged assessment, respectively. Model discrimination was assessed using Harrell's C-statistic. RESULTS: Of 3 220 candidates, the PFP and abridged assessment identified 23.8% and 27.4% candidates as frail, respectively. The abridged frailty phenotype had substantial agreement (kappa = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.66-0.71) and excellent discrimination (AUC = 0.861). Among 20 patients at evaluation, abridged assessment took 5-7 minutes to complete. The PFP and abridged assessment had similar associations with waitlist mortality (subdistribution hazard ratio [SHR] = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.26-2.08 vs SHR = 1.70, 95% CI: 1.33-2.16) and comparable mortality discrimination (p = .51). CONCLUSIONS: The abridged assessment is an efficient and valid way to identify frailty. It predicts waitlist mortality without sacrificing discrimination. Surgical departments should consider utilizing the abridged assessment to evaluate frailty in patients when time is limited.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Because of the high risk of waitlist mortality and posttransplant complications, kidney transplant (KT) patients may benefit from advance care planning (ACP) and palliative care consultation (PCC). We quantified the prevalence and racial disparities in ACP and PCC among KT candidates and recipients. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: 2,575 adult KT candidates and 1,233 adult recipients (2008-2020). EXPOSURE: Race and ethnicity. OUTCOMES: All reports of ACP and PCC were abstracted from chart review. ACP was defined as patient self-report of an advance directive, presence of an advance directive in the medical record, or a documented goals-of-care conversation with a provider. PCC was defined as an ordered referral or a documented palliative care note in the medical record. ANALYTICAL APPROACH: Racial/ethnic disparities in ACP/PCC were estimated using adjusted logistic regression. RESULTS: 21.4% of KT candidates and 34.9% of recipients engaged in ACP. There were racial/ethnic disparities in ACP among KT candidates (White, 24.4%; Black, 19.1%; Hispanic, 15%; other race and ethnicity, 21.1%; P=0.008) and recipients (White, 39.5%; Black, 31.2%; Hispanic, 26.3%; other race and ethnicity, 26.6%; P=0.007). After adjustment, Black KT recipients had a 29% lower likelihood of engaging in ACP (OR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.55-0.91) than White KT recipients. Among older (aged≥65 years) recipients, those who were Black had a lower likelihood of engaging in ACP, but there was no racial disparity among younger recipients (P=0.020 for interaction). 4.2% of KT candidates and 5.1% of KT recipients engaged in PCC; there were no racial disparities in PCC among KT candidates (White, 5.3%; Black, 3.6%; Hispanic, 2.5%; other race and ethnicity, 2.1%; P=0.13) or recipients (White, 5.5%; Black, 5.6%; Hispanic, 0.0%; other race and ethnicity, 1.3%; P = 0.21). LIMITATIONS: Generalizability may be limited to academic transplant centers. CONCLUSIONS: ACP is not common among KT patients, and minoritized transplant patients are least likely to engage in ACP; PCC is less common. Future efforts should aim to integrate ACP and PCC into the KT process. PLAIN-LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Kidney transplant (KT) candidates and recipients are at elevated risk of morbidity and mortality. They may benefit from completing a document or conversation with their palliative care provider that outlines their future health care wishes, known as advance care planning (ACP), which is a component of palliative care consultation (PCC). We wanted to determine how many KT candidates and recipients have engaged in ACP or PCC and identify potential racial disparities. We found that 21.4% of candidates and 34.9% of recipients engaged in ACP. After adjustment, Black recipients had a 29% lower likelihood of engaging in ACP. We found that 4.2% of KT candidates and 5.1% of KT recipients engaged in PCC, with no racial disparities found in PCC.

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: Fatigue is an established prognostic indicator of mortality risk. It remains unknown whether fatigability anchored to a physical task is a more sensitive prognostic indicator and whether sensitivity differs by prevalent chronic conditions. METHODS: A total of 1076 physically well-functioning participants 50 yr or older in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging self-reported fatigue (unusual tiredness or low energy) and had perceived fatigability assessed after a standardized treadmill walk. All-cause mortality was ascertained by proxy contact and National Death Index linkage. Cox proportional hazards models estimated associations of perceived fatigability and fatigue with all-cause mortality, adjusting for demographic and clinical covariates. Interactions by chronic conditions were also examined. RESULTS: Each 1 SD higher in perceived fatigability, unusual tiredness, or low energy was associated with a higher relative hazard of all-cause mortality after covariate adjustment (fatigability: hazard ratio (HR), 1.18 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.03-1.36); unusual tiredness: HR, 1.25 (95% CI, 1.08-1.44); low energy: HR, 1.27 (95% CI, 1.10-1.46)). Models had similar discrimination ( P > 0.14 for all). Perceived fatigability was associated with mortality risk among participants free of arthritis or osteoarthritis who otherwise appeared healthy (no arthritis: HR, 1.45 (95% CI, 1.15-1.84); arthritis: HR, 1.09 (95% CI, 0.92-1.30); P -interaction = 0.031). Unusual tiredness was associated with mortality among those with a history of diabetes (no diabetes: HR, 1.16 (95% CI, 0.97-1.38); diabetes: HR, 1.65 (95% CI, 1.22-2.23); P -interaction = 0.045) or pulmonary disease (no pulmonary disease: HR, 1.22 (95% CI, 1.05-1.43); pulmonary disease: HR, 2.15 (95% CI, 1.15-4.03); P -interaction = 0.034). CONCLUSIONS: Higher perceived fatigability and fatigue symptoms were similarly associated with higher all-cause mortality, but utility differed by chronic condition. Perceived fatigability might be useful for health screening and long-term mortality risk assessment for well-functioning adults. Alternatively, self-reported fatigue seems more disease-specific with regard to mortality risk.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common complication in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. However, the pathogenesis of postoperative AF (POAF) is elusive, and research related to this topic is sparse. Our study aimed to identify key gene modules and genes and to conduct a circular RNA (circRNA)-microRNA (miRNA)-messenger RNA (mRNA) regulatory network analysis of POAF on the basis of bioinformatic analysis. Methods: The GSE143924 and GSE97455 data sets from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database were analyzed. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was used to identify the key gene modules and genes related to POAF. A circRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory network was also built according to differential expression analysis. Functional enrichment analysis was further performed according to Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis. Results: WGCNA identified 2 key gene modules and 44 key genes that were significantly related to POAF. Functional enrichment analysis of these key genes implicated the following important biological processes (BPs): endosomal transport, protein kinase B signaling, and transcription regulation. The circRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory network suggested that KLF10 may take critical part in POAF. Moreover, 2 novel circRNAs, hsa_circRNA_001654 and hsa_circRNA_005899, and 2 miRNAs, hsa-miR-19b-3p and hsa-miR-30a-5p, which related with KLF10, were involved in the network. Conclusions: Our study provides foundational expression profiles following POAF based on WGCNA. The circRNA-miRNA-mRNA network offers insights into the BPs and underlying mechanisms of POAF.

The humic acid (HA) possesses a more recalcitrant structure, making it crucial carbon components that improve carbon sequestration. Moreover, ferrous ions could improve microbial activity and enhance compost humification, and their oxidation into iron oxides could adsorb carbon components for sequestration. Based on the advantages of low cost and easy availability of ferrous sulfate (FeSO4), this study investigated the effect of FeSO4 on carbon sequestration during composting. Chicken manure (CM) and food waste (FW) composting were carried out in four treatments, namely control (CM, FW) and 5% (w/w) FeSO4 treated groups (CM+, FW+). Results indicated that FeSO4 increased HA content, improved organic carbon stability. Carbon loss for CM, CM+, FW and FW + treatments were 48.5%, 46.2%, 45.0%, and 40.3%, respectively. Meanwhile, FeSO4 enhanced the function of bacterial taxa involved in HA synthesis in CM + treatment, and improved the number of core bacteria significantly associated with formation of HA and iron oxide. SEM analysis verified that role of FeSO4 was significant in promoting HA synthesis during CM + composting, while it was remarkably in enhancing HA sequestration during FW + composting. This article provided fundamental theoretical backing for enhancing HA production and improving carbon sequestration during different materials composting.

The application of straw biochar to chicken manure composting mitigated nitrogen loss. However, the impact of biochar derived from different types of straw on nitrogen fixation in chicken manure composting is discrepant, and the specific pathways remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the specific pathways of maize straw biochar (M) and rice straw biochar (R) to improve nitrogen fixation during chicken manure composting. The nitrogen losses in control (no addition, CK), M, and R composting were 51.84 %, 33.47 %, and 38.24 %, respectively, suggesting that adding straw biochar effectively improved nitrogen fixation. Microbial community analysis suggested that inhibiting denitrification and NH4+-N transformation by microorganisms was the primary means of improving nitrogen fixation. Meanwhile, biochar addition reduced the number of bacteria participating in nitrogen transformation and strengthened the NO3--N and total organic nitrogen transformation processes, among which the effect of M composting was stronger. The stronger effect was attributed to the significant role of the core microorganisms in M composting in shifting the transformation processes of the nitrogen components (P < 0.05). Therefore, the function of different straw biochar was determined by its different impacts on the microbial community, highlighting the important role of microbial community variability.

Co-composting is an excellent and effective technology for treating livestock manure in which microorganisms play a crucial function. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the changes of microbial interactions during co-composting. Six different addition ratios of chicken and pig manure were used in composting experiment. The results showed that the co-composting system using 60% chicken manure and 40% pig manure significantly altered the microbial diversity and community structure. In addition, the complexity and tightness of its microbial community network structure reached the maximum, as did the strength of its cooperative and competitive microbial interactions. The higher microbial abundance and microbial interaction have the potential to promote the decomposition and transformation of compost components. Therefore, this study preliminarily revealed the changes of microbial community in co-composting, which provided a theoretical basis for optimizing microbial community interaction in composting systems by mixing different ratios of materials in practice.

BACKGROUND: In collaboration with local partners, we reviewed 18 national policy documents across two sub-Saharan African countries identified as pre-dividend nations by the World Bank in 2017: Nigeria and Tanzania. Our aim was to assess national policies in pre-dividend countries and to determine whether national strategies were primed to capitalize on changing demographic structures, maximally attain the demographic dividend, and augment socio-economic growth. METHODS: We conducted policy reviews by focusing on five key sectors of the Gates Institute Demographic Dividend Framework: Family Planning, Maternal and Child Health, Education, Women's Empowerment, and Labor Market. This framework was developed as a tool for countries to apply targeted policies for accelerating the demographic dividend based on their demographic structure. For each component we used a comprehensive list of indicators, defined via a systematic literature review, through which we assessed national policies aimed at maximizing the demographic dividend. RESULTS: Between the two countries, we observed persistent gaps in policies targeting family planning. Although more comprehensive, policies addressing maternal and child health, education, women's empowerment, and labor market still lagged in their specificity and measurability. We identified specific policy amendments and alternatives that Nigeria and Tanzania could consider to mitigate these gaps. We also stress the importance of designing measurable policy initiatives across sectors. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these recommendations, as Nigeria, Tanzania, and other pre-dividend nations start experiencing rapid demographic changes, they may consider implementing routine policy reviews to strengthen policies across the five key sectors and harness the benefits of a demographic dividend.

The effect of different carbon sources on nitrogen (N) transformation and N loss through nitrogenous gas volatilization during composting of manure is not clear. Disaccharides had moderate degradation stability compared to monosaccharides and polysaccharides. Therefore, we investigated the effect of adding sucrose (nonreducing sugar) and maltose (reducing sugar) as carbon sources on volatile N loss and hydrolysable organic nitrogen (HON) transformation. HON is composed of bioavailable organic nitrogen (BON) and hydrolysable unknown nitrogen (HUN). Three laboratory-scale experimental groups were conducted with control (CK), 5 % sucrose (SS), and 5 % maltose (MS) addition. Our findings indicated that, while excluding leaching and surface runoff, adding sucrose and maltose decreased the N loss through gas volatilization by 15.78 % and 9.77 %, respectively. The addition of maltose significantly increased the BON content (P < 0.05), which was 6.35 % higher than in CK. The addition of sucrose led to an increase in HUN content (P < 0.05), which was 22.89 % higher than that in CK. In addition, the core microbial communities associated with HON changed after the addition of disaccharides. The transformation of the HON fractions was facilitated by the succession of microbial communities. Ultimately, variation partition analysis (VPA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) verified that the core microbial communities were the major contributors to promoting HON transformation. In summary, adding disaccharides could promote the different transformations of organic nitrogen (ON) and reduce the volatilization of nitrogenous gases by changing the succession of the core microbial communities during composting. This study provided theoretical and technical support for reducing volatile N loss and promoting ON fraction sequestration during composting. Furthermore, the effect of carbon source addition on the nitrogen cycle was also explored.

The sulfate reduction reaction releases malodorous gases (H2S) during composting, with potential pollution risks to the environment. In this study, chicken manure (CM) with high sulfur content and beef cattle manure (BM) with low sulfur content were used to investigate the effect of control (CK) and low moisture content (LW) on sulfur metabolism. The results showed that compared to CK composting, the cumulative H2S emission of CM and BM composting decreased by 27.27% and 21.08% under LW condition, respectively. Meanwhile, the abundance of core microorganisms related to sulfur components was reduced under LW condition. Furthermore, the KEGG sulfur pathway and network analysis suggested that LW composting weakened the sulfate reduction pathway, and reduced the number and abundance of functional microorganisms and genes. These results indicated that low moisture content had important effects on inhibiting the release of H2S during composting, which provided a scientific basis to control environmental pollution.

This study set out to explore the impact of lignite on preserving organic matter and promoting the formation of humic acid (HA) during chicken manure composting. Composting test was carried out for control (CK), 5 % lignite addition treatment (L1), 10 % addition treatment (L2) and 15 % addition treatment (L3). The results demonstrated that lignite addition effectively reduced the loss of organic matter. The HA content of all lignite-added groups was higher than that of CK, and the highest was 45.44 %. L1 and L2 increased the richness of bacterial community. Network analysis showed higher diversity of HA-associated bacteria in L2 and L3 treatments. Structural equation models revealed that reducing sugar and amino acid contributed to the formation of HA during CK and L1 composting, while polyphenol contributed more to the HA formation during L2 and L3 composting. Furthermore, lignite addition also could promote the direct effect of microorganisms on HA formation. Therefore, the addition of lignite had practical significance to enhance compost quality.
