RESUMEN

Common-path optical coherence tomography (CPOCT) is known to reduce group velocity dispersion and polarization mismatch between the reference and the sample arm as both arms share the same physical path. Existing implementations of CPOCT typically require one to incorporate an additional cover glass within the beam path of the sample arm to provide a reference signal. In this paper, we aim to further reduce this step by directly making use of the back-reflected signal, arising from a conical lens-tip fiber, as a reference signal. The conical lens, which is directly manufactured onto the optical fiber tip via a simple selective-chemical etching process, fulfils two functions acting as both the imaging lens and the self-aligning reference plane. We use a Fourier-domain OCT system to demonstrate the feasibility of this technique upon biological tissue. An in-fiber CPOCT technique may prove potentially useful in endoscopic OCT imaging.

To evaluate chewing gums as a vehicle to increase salivary mineral saturation levels and enhance salivation, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) and an equimolar mixture of tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) with dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA) were chosen as experimental chewing gum additives. Each of eight subjects chewed a commercial sugarless bubble gum (control) for 16 min or the same gum to which 5 wt% of MCPM or the TTCP-DCPM mixture had been added. The saliva samples collected every 2 min were analyzed for weight, pH, and total calcium (Ca) and phosphate (P) concentrations. Both experimental gums were found to increase significantly the Ca and P concentrations of saliva during the 16-minute period even more than with a previously evaluated gum that contained dicalcium phosphate dihydrate. The degree of saturation of tooth mineral was significantly increased by both experimental gums, with the greater increase being produced by the TTCP-DCPA gum. The MCPM gum produced a significantly greater saliva flow and a lower salivary pH than did the control and TTCP-DCPA gums. The results suggest that the experimental gums may be useful for promoting remineralization in general and for inducing salivation in xerostomic patients.

Multigene families are a ubiquitous feature of eukaryotes; however, their presence in Saccharomyces is more limited. The MAL multigene family is comprised of five unlinked loci, MAL1, MAL2, MAL3, MAL4 and MAL6, any one of which is sufficient for yeast to metabolize maltose. A cloned MAL6 locus was used as a probe to facilitate the cloning of the other four functional loci as well as two partially active alleles of MAL1. Each locus could be characterized as a cluster of three genes, MALR (regulatory), MALT (maltose transport or permease) and MALS (structural or maltase), encoded by a total of about 7 kb of DNA; however, homologous sequences at each locus extend beyond the coding regions. Our results indicate that there is extensive homology among the MAL loci, especially within their maltase genes. The greatest sequence diversity occurs in their regulatory gene regions. Southern cross analyses of the cloned MAL loci indicate a single duplication of the MAL6R-homologous sequences upstream of the MAL6R gene as well as an extensive duplication of more than 10 kb at the MAL3 locus. The large repeat at the MAL3 locus results in the presence of four copies of MAL3R-homologous sequences and two copies of MAL3T-homologous sequences at that locus. Two naturally occurring inactive alleles of MAL1 show a deletion or divergence of their MALR sequences. The significance of these repeats in the evolution of the MAL multigene family is discussed.
