RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to determine the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in patients with refractory epilepsy. Serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were determined using the spectrophotometer method. Refractory epilepsy patients' serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were statistically significant compared to the healthy control group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels may play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of refractory epilepsy. This study was the first to investigate some parameters in refractory epilepsy disease.

BACKGROUND: Complex underlying mechanisms consisting of cytotoxic, excitotoxic, and inflammatory effects of intraparenchymal hemorrhage (ICH) are responsible for the highly detrimental effects on brain tissue. Oxidative stress also plays a significant role in brain damage after ICH; however, it is less important than other factors. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the oxidative stress parameters malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidant-reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CT) activities in operated and nonoperated patients with spontaneous ICH. METHODS: One hundred patients with spontaneous ICH and 100 healthy controls were included in this study. Within the indication, 50 of the 100 patients underwent decompressive surgery. MDA, GSH, SOD, and CT activities were measured in the serum obtained from the patients. RESULTS: SOD and CT levels were lower in the nonoperated group than in the operated and control groups. GSH was similar in the operated and nonoperated groups, but it was lower in the control group. However, MDA was higher in those who did not undergo surgery than in the other groups. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, MDA, an indicator of oxidative stress, was found to be lower, and CT and SOD activities were found to be higher in ICH patients who underwent decompression than in those who did not. This is the first study to present the correlations of MDA, SOD, CT, and GSH in operated and nonoperated patients with spontaneous ICH.

Background: The excessive accumulation of fat tissue in obesity is the source of chronic low-level inflammation and causes future dysmetabolic and cardiovascular disorders. Removal of this excessive fat tissue with the aid of bariatric surgery (BS) techniques, such as sleeve gastrectomy, may reverse adverse inflammatory outcomes. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of sleeve gastrectomy on inflammatory markers, specifically endocan, IL-6, and CRP, in individuals with obesity. Methods: Thirty-two patients with class 3 obesity and class 2 obesity + comorbidities were enrolled in the study. Clinical characteristics including age, comorbidity, body mass index (BMI), waist, and hip circumferences of the participants were noted before and 3 months after sleeve gastrectomy. Blood samples were collected during those periods to assess biochemical features such as serum endocan, interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive peptide, fasting insulin, glycosylated hemoglobin A1c levels, and lipid panel. A statistical package program was used for the analysis of those parameters, and p<0.05 was accepted as significant at a 95.0% confidence interval. Results: BMI reduced from 43.55±6.78 to 36.16±6.14 kg/m2 within 3 months following BS (p<0.001). Preoperative serum endocan, IL-6, and CRP levels were correlated with BMI, and in line with BMI reduction, their serum levels decreased after BS (p<0.05). HOMA-IR also reduced after BS, and both in the pre and post-BS periods correlated with BMI, IL-6, endocan, and CRP levels (p<0.05). The mean total body weight loss was 20.4% within 3 months post-BS. Conclusion: BS techniques are effective in weight loss and reversing the inflammatory processes caused by obesity. Serum endocan, IL-6, and CRP levels are promising markers for describing obesity-related inflammation and objectively checking the alleviation of inflammation following BS.

Background: The American Thoracic Society (ATS) Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical, and Operations Research (MECOR) Program aims to build research capacity in low and middle-income countries. MECOR has three levels, during which students learn to develop a research protocol and write a manuscript. MECOR Turkiye has been offered every year since 2008. Objective: The aim of this paper is to report the number and impact of published articles generated from research questions developed by students in levels 1, 2, and 3 of the ATS MECOR Program in Turkiye between 2008 and 2018. Methods: We collected the research questions developed in all levels of the ATS MECOR Program in Turkiye between 2008 and 2018. We searched Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and ResearchGate in April 2022 to see how many of these research questions were published as articles and, if published, in which journals. Results: Of the 176 research questions collected, 49 had been developed in level 1, 82 had been developed in level 2, and 45 had been developed in level 3. Of those 176 research questions, 55 (31.3%) generated articles that were accepted for publication. The frequency of published articles based on MECOR-developed research questions increased linearly as the course level in which they were developed increased (18.4% in level 1, 30% in level 2, 46.7% in level 3; P = 0.012; linear-by-linear association, P = 0.003). The median time from the development of the research question to publication was three years overall and did not differ significantly among the course levels (P = 0.36). Of the research questions developed, 43 were published in Science Citation Index or Science Citation Index Expanded-indexed journals. Conclusion: Acceptance of an article for publication is one way to measure the impact of the ATS MECOR Program. Our data describe significant research output among our participants, which increases with their length of participation in the program.

AIM: We aimed to compare 1-year postoperative results of patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with transit bipartition (LSG-TB) and transit loop bipartition (LSG-TLB) and mini gastric bypass (MGB). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective comparison of 2 novel bariatric surgery techniques with MGB. Primary outcome measure of the study was a rate of T2DM remission. Secondary outcomes included excess body mass index (BMI) loss, improvement in hepatosteatosis, and duration of operation. Revision surgery needs were also assessed. RESULTS: Overall, 32 patients underwent the LSG-TLB, 15 underwent LSG-TB, and 50 underwent MGB. Mean age and sex distribution were comparable for all groups. Presurgical BMI was similar in MGB and LSG + TB groups, whereas LSG + TLB group had significantly lower BMI values compared with the MGB group. In both groups, BMI values reduced significantly compared with respective baseline values. Excess BMI loss was significantly higher in patients who underwent LSG-TLB compared with patients treated with LSG-TB and MGB. Bariatric surgery procedures lasted shorter in LSG-TLB than in LSG-TB. However, the shortest of all was MGB. The remission of T2DM rates were 71% and 73.3% in LSG-TLB and LSG-TB groups, respectively ( P > 9.999). The rate of revision surgeries was comparable in both groups. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, LSG-TLB took less time and provided significantly higher excess BMI loss compared with LSG-TB. T2DM remission and improvement rates were similar in both groups. LSG-TLB seemed like a promising bariatric surgery technique in patients with obesity and T2DM.

CONTEXT: The aims of the study are to compare characteristics of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) related to different etiologies, and to identify predictors of recurrence of SAT and incident hypothyroidism. METHODS: This nationwide, multicenter, retrospective cohort study included 53 endocrinology centers in Turkey. The study participants were divided into either COVID-19-related SAT (Cov-SAT), SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-related SAT (Vac-SAT), or control SAT (Cont-SAT) groups. RESULTS: Of the 811 patients, 258 (31.8%) were included in the Vac-SAT group, 98 (12.1%) in the Cov-SAT group, and 455 (56.1%) in the Cont-SAT group. No difference was found between the groups with regard to laboratory and imaging findings. SAT etiology was not an independent predictor of recurrence or hypothyroidism. In the entire cohort, steroid therapy requirement and younger age were statistically significant predictors for SAT recurrence. C-reactive protein measured during SAT onset, female sex, absence of antithyroid peroxidase (TPO) positivity, and absence of steroid therapy were statistically significant predictors of incident (early) hypothyroidism, irrespective of SAT etiology. On the other hand, probable predictors of established hypothyroidism differed from that of incident hypothyroidism. CONCLUSION: Since there is no difference in terms of follow-up parameters and outcomes, COVID-19- and SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-related SAT can be treated and followed up like classic SATs. Recurrence was determined by younger age and steroid therapy requirement. Steroid therapy independently predicts incident hypothyroidism that may sometimes be transient in overall SAT and is also associated with a lower risk of established hypothyroidism.

INTRODUCTION: Patients in intensive care units (ICU) are 5-7 times more susceptible to infection than other groups, which increases the prevalence of hospital-acquired infections and associated sepsis accounting for 60% of deaths. Gram-negative bacteria are the most common source of urinary tract infections that cause morbidity, mortality, and sepsis in the ICU. The aim of this study is to detect the most commonly grown microorganisms and antibiotic resistance in urine cultures in the intensive care units of our tertiary city hospital, which has more than 20% of the ICU beds in Bursa By this way, we suppose that we will contribute to surveillance studies in our province, our country. METHODOLOGY: Patients who were admitted to Bursa City Hospital adult ICU for various reasons between 15.07.2019 and 31.01.2021 and had growth in urine cultures were retrospectively screened. The urine culture result, growing microorganism, antibiotic used, and resistance status were recorded and analyzes were performed according to hospital data. RESULTS: Gram-negative growth was observed in 85.6% (n = 7707), gram-positive growth in 11.6% (n = 1045), and candida fungus growth in 2.8% (n = 249). Resistance to at least one antibiotic in urine cultures was observed for Acinetobacter (71.8), Klebsiella (51%), Proteus (47.95%), Pseudomonas (33%), E. coli (31%) and Enterococci (26.75%), respectively. DISCUSSION: Developing a health system leads to longer life expectancy, longer intensive care treatment, and more frequent interventional procedures. In terms of being a resource for empirical treatments, early initiation of empirical treatments to control the urinary tract infection disrupts the patient's hemodynamics and increases mortality and morbidity.

AIM: To elucidate the association of serum irisin levels with bone mineral density (BMD) and calcium-phosphorus metabolism parameters in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients and renal transplant recipients (RTRs). METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study involving CKD patients and RTRs. Healthy volunteers served as controls. Age, gender, and dialysis vintage were recorded. Serum irisin, creatinine, glucose, calcium, albumin, 25(OH) vitamin D, ferritin, C-reactive protein, A1C, and lipid profile were studied in all participants. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), corrected calcium, and body mass index (BMI) were calculated. RESULTS: Overall, 49 patients (23 hemodialysis, 26 RTRs) and 25 control subjects were included. In hemodialysis (HD) group, 8 patients (34.8%) had osteoporosis, and 12 patients (52.2%) had osteopenia. In RTR group, 3 patients (11.5%) had osteoporosis, while 15 patients (57.7%) had osteopenia. Among controls, one had osteoporosis, and 7 had osteopenia. There was no significant difference between HD and RTRs; however, osteoporosis rate was significantly lower in control subjects. BMD measurements (femur and lumbar T- and Z-scores) were comparable between HD and RTR groups. Control group DEXA values were similar to RTRs; however, they were significantly higher compared to HD group. 25(OH) vitamin D levels were comparable between the HD and RTR groups, and these were significantly lower compared to values of the control group. Mean serum irisin level was 426.6 ± 191.2 pg/mL in hemodialysis group, 342.6 ± 174.8 in the RTR group, and 208.0 ± 186.1 in controls. Serum irisin levels were similar in RTR and HD groups, but their values were significantly higher compared to controls. When we compared serum irisin levels between patients with and without osteoporosis in the whole cohort and hemodialysis and RTR groups, there was no difference. Serum irisin was positively correlated with lumbar T-score both in hemodialysis and RTR groups. CONCLUSION: Our study is the first in the literature revealing the positive correlation of serum irisin level with femur T-score in RTRs. Serum irisin level was also positively correlated with femur T-scores in hemodialysis patients.

The goal of this study was to biomechanically and morphologically research both the impact of mobile phone like radiofrequency radiations (RFR) on the tibia and the effects on skeletal muscle through oxidative stress parameters. Fifty-six rats (200-250 g) were put into groups: healthy sham (n = 7), healthy RFR (900, 1800, 2100 MHz) (n = 21), diabetic sham (n = 7) and diabetic RFR (900, 1800, 2100 MHz) (n = 21). Over a month, each group spent two hours/day in a Plexiglas carousel. The rats in the experimental group were exposed to RFR, but the sham groups were not. At the end of the experiment, the right tibia bones and skeletal muscle tissue were removed. The three-point bending test and radiological evaluations were performed on the bones, and CAT, GSH, MDA, and IMA in muscles were measured. There were differences in biomechanics properties and radiological evaluations between the groups (p < .05). In the measurements in the muscle tissues, significant differences were statistically found (p < .05). The average whole-body SAR values for GSM 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz were 0.026, 0.164, and 0.173 W/kg. RFRs emitted from mobile phone may cause adverse effects on tibia and skeletal muscle health, though further studies are needed.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the post-COVID-19 symptoms, the severity of symptoms, and functional capacities seen in hospitalized and nonhospitalized COVID-19 survivors according to time periods (total 6, 1-3, and 3-6 months) by tele-assessment methods and to predict the need for periodic rehabilitation of COVID-19 survivors. Methods: Three hundred ninety-four COVID-19 survivors (50.18 ± 15.14 years) who were between 1 and 6 months after PCR(+) were included in the study, and their ongoing symptoms and the severity of these symptoms (0-10 points) were assessed with COVID-19 Yorkshire Rehabilitation Screening (C19-YRS) Tool, and the 30-s Chair Stand Test (CST) was applied by tele-assessment methods. Results: In hospitalized and nonhospitalized survivors of COVID-19, 87% experienced at least one symptom within the first 6 months. The most prevalent symptoms were anxiety (47.7%), fatigue (46.7%), and muscle pain (45.7%). The most common symptom in the nonhospitalized group was fatigue (52.6%), whereas anxiety was 46.8% in the hospitalized group. The 30-s CST score of the nonhospitalized group was significantly higher than the hospitalized group (p < 0.001). Conclusions: In the first 6 months post-COVID-19, musculoskeletal problems, anxiety, fatigue, and muscle pain were observed to be the most prevalent symptoms, regardless of time, in hospitalized and nonhospitalized survivors. There was a serious decrease in their functional capacity. Priority should be given to psychiatric, cardiopulmonary, and musculoskeletal rehabilitation in post-COVID-19. Inclusion of hospitalized/nonhospitalized COVID-19 survivors in a comprehensive rehabilitation program tailored to their needs by following a comprehensive tele-assessment by a multidisciplinary team will reduce the "long COVID-19 syndrome." OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the relationship between Ischemia Modified Albumin and Total-Sulphydryl levels with some subclinical inflammatory markers in patients with hyperemesis gravidarum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 258 pregnant women, 137 with hyperemesis gravidarum and 121 low-risk pregnancies, were included in this case-control study. The patients were divided into three groups according to the severity of hyperemesis gravidarum as mild (n = 53), moderate (n = 41) and severe (n = 43). RESULTS: Serum Ischemia Modified Albumin levels were statistically different from the control group (P < 0.001). Among the subgroups, the highest Ischemia Modified Albumin value was observed in the severe hyperemesis gravidarum group, and the highest Total-Sulphydryl level was observed in the mild hyperemesis gravidarum group (P < 0.001). Serum potassium levels were higher in the control group (P < 0.001). While a negative correlation was observed between Ischemia Modified Albumin and Total-Sulphydryl, a positive correlation was observed in Platelet crit, C-reactive protein, and ketonuria. As the severity of the disease increases, Ischemia Modified Albumin, which is an oxidative stress factor, increases, and Total-Sulphydryl levels decrease (p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that a one-unit increase in Ischemia Modified Albumin resulted in a statistically significant 1.9-fold increase in the risk of Severe hyperemesis gravidarum (OR 1.92, 95% CI 1.008-1.956; P = 0.01) CONCLUSION: This study shows that there is a condition in the pathophysiology of hyperemesis gravidarum, with an increase in Ischemia Modified Albumin and a decrease in Total-Sulphydryl levels, and oxidative stress occurs. It was important to detect increased Ischemia Modified Albumin and decreased antioxidant values in relation to the inflammatory factors that were effective in the severe hyperemesis gravidarum group.

Among biological applications, plant-mediated Pd NPs for multi-drug resistance (MDR) developed in pathogenic bacteria were synthesized with the help of biomass of lemon peel, a biological material, with a non-toxic, environmentally friendly, human-nature green synthesis method. Characterization of synthesized Pd NPs was carried out by UV-Vis spectrometry, Transmissive Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. According to TEM analysis, Pd NPs were confirmed to be in a spherical shape and the mean particle size was determined to be 4.11 nm. The crystal structure of Pd NPs was checked using XRD analysis and the mean particle size was observed to be 6.72 nm. Besides, the antibacterial activity of Pd NPs was determined against Escherichia coli (E. coli) (ATCC 8739), Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis ATCC 6633), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus ATCC 6538), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae ATCC 11296) and Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens ATCC) bacteria. Antibacterial activity was determined to be high in Pd NPs which is in conformance with the results acquired. The Pd NPs showed good photocatalytic activity, after 90 min illumination, about 81.55% and 68.45% of MB and MO respectively were catalysed by the Pd NPs catalyst, and 74.50% of RhB dyes were removed at 120 min of illumination. Within the scope of this project, it is recommended to use Pd NPs obtained by the green synthesis in the future as an antibacterial agent in biomedical use and for the cleaning of polluted waters.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the oxidant-antioxidant status, endothelial dysfunction, lipid metabolism, and metabolic syndrome risk in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Materials and Methods: Forty-five obese (BMI >30 kg/m2) woman diagnosed with PCOS in the study, forty-five nonobese (BMI <30 kg/m2) PCOS diagnosis working groups, and forty-nine healthy control groups were created with patients. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels with antioxidant activities, such as SOD, GSH, GPx, and CAT activities, were measured by spectrophotometry. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the mean serum MDA level in the obese PCOS group compared to the nonobese group and the control group (p < 0.001). When the antioxidant parameters, such as SOD, GPx, GSH, and CAT, were compared with the healthy control group, nonobese, and obese PCOS groups, the difference between the groups was statistically significant (p < 0.001). A positive correlation was observed between MDA and BMI, triglyceride, LDL, SBP, DBP, and HOMA-IR in the PCOS patient group. Conclusion: Oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant parameters in PCOS patients were correlated with hyperinsulinemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemia findings, and we think that this oxidative stress condition may contribute to metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases in PCOS patients.

Free radicals are chemical molecules that are more reactive and have an unpaired electron. Free radicals formed inside the cell oxidize biomolecules, leading to cell death and tissue damage. Antioxidants are molecules that can stabilize or inactivate free radicals before they damage the cell. In this study; the availability of Malondialdehyde, Superoxide dismutase, Catalase and Reduced glutathione levels as markers for related diseases was evaluated by examining whether and in what range they may vary in some diseases. In study, nine groups consist of prostate cancer, cirrhosis, liver transplantation, chronic kidney damage, acute kidney injury, X-ray exposure, CT exposure, MR exposure and Osteonecrosis. Analysis of means is a method developed to compare group means with the overall mean and presents the results graphically in an easy-to-understand manner without the required for any post hoc test. In addition, related characteristics were categorized as "low and high" and Nonlinear Principal Component Analysis was conducted to visually present their relationship with related disease types in two-dimensional space. The upper and lower decision lines were found 3.123 and 2.794 µmol/L, respectively for Malondialdehyde. Those with cirrhosis, chronic kidney disease, acute kidney disease and tomography exposure were included in the upper and lower decision lines. Those with prostate cancer, osteonecrosis, and X-ray exposure were above the upper decision line and are found higher than the overall mean. Those with lung transplantation and MR exposure appear to be below the lower decision line and lower than the overall mean. The present study provides the first comprehensive assessment of the availability of Malondialdehyde, Superoxide dismutase, Catalase and Reduced glutathione levels as markers for some related diseases. This study has shown that Analysis of means can be used as an alternative graphical procedure for multiple group comparisons with an overall mean in the studies regarding as biochemical characteristics and relating diseases. In addition, Nonlinear Principal Component Analysis can be useful aid for decision marker in some biochemical characteristics and related diseases.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a disease that affects many organs, especially the lung, and may lead to multiorgan failure. Studies describing neurological dysfunctions involving the central and peripheral nervous systems have emerged. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the neurological signs and symptoms in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. METHODS: The data of 290 patients admitted to our center (ward and intensive care unit) who received a diagnosis of COVID-19 were analyzed retrospectively. Patients' demographic, clinical and laboratory data, and their neurological diseases, symptoms, and complications were compared. RESULTS: Male sex, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and having a history of neurological disease were associated with increased mortality in patients with COVID-19. Seizures and altered consciousness were also found to be more common in patients who died. In addition, lower platelet counts (P=0.001), higher C-reactive protein levels (P<0.001) and higher D-dimer levels (P=0.003) were associated with increased risk of mortality. CONCLUSIONS: We believe that close monitoring of any possible neurological manifestations is mandatory in hospitalized patients at the onset of COVID-19 and during disease progression. Clinical findings such as neurological symptoms and acute phase reactants are important in the follow-up and treatment of the disease.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the levels of lipid peroxidation (MDA) and antioxidants such as reduced glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the blood serum of patients with cirrhosis and liver transplantation. METHODS: In this study, serum malondialdehyde acid (MDA) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH), and catalase (CAT) activities were measured spectrophotometrically and compared to the results of the healthy control group. RESULTS: SOD, CAT and GSH activities were significantly decreased in the patient groups compared to the healthy control group (p<0.05). MDA levels were significantly higher in the patient group compared to the healthy control group (p <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, this study demonstrated that oxidative stress may play an important role in the development of liver cirrhosis and in liver transplantation. This study is the first one to show how MDA, SOD, CAT and GSH levels change in liver cirrhosis and liver transplantation, while further studies are essential to investigate antioxidant enzymes and oxidative stress status in patients with cirrhosis and liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Osteomyelitis (OM) is a local or generalised infection of the bone and bone marrow which may be multifactorial in its causation. In this study, we aimed to determine oxidative DNA damage and antioxidant status of patients with chronic osteomyelitis. MATERIAL METHOD: In this study, patients with chronic osteomyelitis and healthy controls were compared for descriptive characteristics (age and gender) and serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-hydroxy-2-deoxy guanosine and antioxidant enzymes catalase, glutathione and superoxide dismutase. RESULTS: This was a case-control study. About 5 mL of venous blood was collected for the estimation of biochemical parameters. This study comprised of 36 OM patients diagnosed, and 41 healthy ages (25-55 years) and sex-matched individuals. Antioxidant enzyme levels were significantly lower in patients with OM, whereas MDA and oxidative DNA damage levels were significantly higher. CONCLUSION: The results obtained from this study have shown that the oxidant-antioxidant balance is impaired in patients with chronic osteomyelitis. It also supports that chronic osteomyelitis has associated with oxidative DNA damage.

BACKGROUND: Bevacizumab is a chemotherapeutic drug, which selectively binds to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and mainly inhibits angiogenesis and neovascularization. We aimed to study the possible effects of bevacizumab on right ventricular pressure (RVP), right ventricular hypertrophy, and VEGF, in hypoxia - induced pulmonary hypertension (PH) rat model. METHODS: 24 adult Wistar Albino rats were randomly divided into four groups: control group - saline; Bevacizumab Group; PH Group; PH + Bevacizumab Group. In hypoxia - induced model, 10% oxygen and 90% nitrogen were applied in a plexiglas box for eight days to PH Group and PH + Bevacizumab Group. On day eight, RVPs were measured directly from the heart, and then animals were sacrificed. Heart and lung tissues were examined, and Fulton index was measured. RESULTS: RVP, Fulton index, and tissue VEGF scores were significantly lower in PH + Bevacizumab group than PH group: median (ranges), RVP, mmHg, 37.8 (33.0-39.0) and 32.3 (28.0-35.0), p: 0.01; Fulton index: 0.30 (0.29-0.33) and 0.25 (0.24-0.26), p: 0.003; tissue VEGF scores: 5.1 (4.8-5.3) and 4.0 (3.8 4.1), p: 0.004, respectively. DISCUSSION: Bevacizumab, which is indeed an antineoplastic agent, might have a favorable effect on hypoxia - induced pulmonary hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Coronary ischemia can lead to myocardial damage and necrosis. The pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases often includes increased oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant defense. The study aimed to assess levels of ischemia modified albumin (IMA), malondialdehyde acid (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase in individuals diagnosed with ST elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-STEMI. METHODS: The present study prospectively included 50 STEMI patients, 55 NSTEMI patients, and 55 healthy subjects. Only patients who were recently diagnosed with STEMI or NSTEMI were included in this study. IMA, MDA, SOD, and catalase activities were measured spectrophotometrically. Significant coronary artery lesions were determined by angiography. RESULTS: Patients with ACS had significantly greater IMA and MDA values than the healthy controls (p<0.001). Besides, patients with STEMI had IMA levels that were significantly greater than those of the patients with NSTEMI (p<0.001), while the reverse was true for MDA levels (p<0.001). The healthy controls had the highest levels of SOD and catalase levels, followed by patients with STEMI and patients with NSTEMI, respectively (p<0.001). There was a significant negative correlation among MDA and SOD with catalase levels (r = -0.771 p<0.001 MDA vs catalase; r = -0.821 p<0.001 SOD vs catalase). CONCLUSIONS: Data obtained in this study reveals that compared to healthy controls, STEMI and NSTEMI patients had increased levels of MDA and IMA and decreased levels of SOD and catalase.
