RESUMEN

The Standards for Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs: Practice Doctorate was adopted by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) in January 2015. Balancing academic and clinical preparation for doctoral students, preparation for the National Certification Examination, and requirements for scholarly work represents a major challenge for students, faculty, and programs. With most nurse anesthesia programs having transitioned to the practice doctorate, the COA was in a pivotal position to examine the current state of scholarly work and to produce a white paper to guide programs' development of criteria for scholarly work. To inform the guidance contained in the white paper, nurse anesthesia educators provided input via a survey, a focus group at the 2019 Assembly of Didactic and Clinical Educators meeting, and an active discussion and question-and-answer session during the Assembly. A call for comments was also sent to stakeholders for review and comment on the draft white paper. The guidance set forth in the white paper in no way supersedes institutional and/or other accreditor requirements. The aim of this guidance is to aid nurse anesthesia programs in successfully managing scholarly project curriculum. This article provides an overview of the project.

RESUMEN

Health information technology initiatives created the framework for a national health information infrastructure that concomitantly fostered a need to build intellectual capacity within our current and future health information management (HIM) work force. Results from the 2008 HIM Educator Survey are discussed. Developed for voluntary electronic participation, the survey comprised a series of questions about educators' professional interests and responsibilities. Summary data from the 402 respondents are provided and highlight areas such as academic rank, teaching status, salary range, levels of interest in various issues, and use of virtual learning tools. Data from this survey provide insights into the concerns and challenges many HIM educators face in today's training institutions and suggest implications for future directions in work force training and professional development within the HIM field.

RESUMEN

Recent reports, including several from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, emphasize an increased marketplace demand for health information management (HIM) professionals who can demonstrate competencies appropriate to an electronic information management environment. In support of this marketplace demand and increased technology development, several academic programs in HIM have developed masters level programs embracing and expanding on the discipline of applied health informatics, yet focused on the fundamental competencies of managing vast and complex health information resources. Individuals dedicated to the management of daily functions within an electronic healthcare environment can better assure the continued viability of the healthcare system through better management of health information, acting as the bridge between the technical development of the electronic health record and the clinicians who will rely on it-thus ultimately supporting better patient care.
