RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Three dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (3D STE) is a novel technique combining 3D echocardiography and speckle tracking analysis. 3D STE software dedicated to the left atrium (LA) was recently available. Our study aimed to assess (1) atrial fibrillation (AF) related LA morpho-functional remodeling using 3D STE and (2) value of LA function parameters in identifying paroxysmal AF (PAF). METHODS: One hundred thirty-nine PAF, 109 persistent AF (Per-AF) and 59 non-AF subjects underwent 3D STE. LA phasic volumes and total LA emptying fraction (LAEF) were obtained and used to calculate passive (pLAEF) and active LA emptying fraction (aLAEF) based on atrial contraction. LA longitudinal and circumferential strain representing reservoir (LASr/LASrc), conduit (LAScd/LAScdc) and pump (LASct/LASctc) function were also assessed. RESULTS: 3D STE was found to have good reproducibility. Increase of LA volumes and decrease of parameters representing LA reservoir and pump function were independently associated with AF as well as AF burden. The correlations between LA emptying fraction and LA circumferential strain representing the same function were always stronger than those with LA longitudinal strain (p < 0.001). Minimal LA volume, LAEF, aLAEF, LASrc and LASctc can be used to accurately differentiate PAF from non-AF subjects (AUC > 0.8) with great sensitivity and specificity. CONCLUSIONS: Assessing LA remodeling in AF using 3D STE was feasible. AF and AF burden were independently associated with LA enlargement and impairment of reservoir and pump function but not conduit function. LA function parameters can indicate underlying PAF and thus can guide AF screening strategy.

Sapindus mukorossi is an environmentally friendly plant and renewable energy source whose fruit has been widely used for biomedicine, biodiesel, and biological chemicals due to its richness in saponin and oil contents. Here, we report the first chromosome-scale genome assembly of S. mukorossi (covering ~391 Mb with a scaffold N50 of 24.66 Mb) and characterize its genetic architecture and evolution by resequencing 104 S. mukorossi accessions. Population genetic analyses showed that genetic diversity in the southwestern distribution area was relatively higher than that in the northeastern distribution area. Gene flow events indicated that southwest species may be the donor population for the distribution areas in China. Genome-wide selective sweep analysis showed that a large number of genes are involved in defense responses, growth and development, including SmRPS2, SmRPS4, SmRPS7, SmNAC2, SmNAC23, SmNAC102, SmWRKY6, SmWRKY26, and SmWRKY33. We also identified several candidate genes controlling six agronomic traits by genome-wide association studies, including SmPCBP2, SmbHLH1, SmCSLD1, SmPP2C, SmLRR-RKs, and SmAHP. Our study not only provides a rich genomic resource for further basic research on Sapindaceae woody trees but also identifies several economically significant genes for genomics-enabled improvements in molecular breeding.

Schima superba is the dominant species of subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest which has the characteristics of ecological fire prevention function. In this study, we report the complete chloroplast genome sequence of S. superba. The cp genome was 157,205 bp in length with a GC content of 37.40%, including a large single-copy (LSC 87,161 bp), a small single-copy (SSC 18,092 bp), and a pair of inverted repeats (IR 25,976 bp). The genome encoded 133 functional genes, including 88 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis showed that S. superba was closely related to Schima sinensis, Schima multibracteata, Schima crenata, and Schima remotisertata.

Semiliquidambar cathayensis is a semi-evergreen broad-leaved tree species distributed in southern China. In 1999, it was approved and published as a national secondary protected plant. We obtained the complete chloroplast genome sequence of S. cathayensis by Illumina sequencing data. The complete chloroplast sequence is 160,430 bp, include large single-copy (LSC) region of 88,991 bp, small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,917 bp, and a pair of invert repeats (IR) regions of 26,261 bp. Plastid genome contain 133 genes, 86 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that S. cathayensis is closely related to Liquidambar formosana.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility and efficacy on the outcome of patients with heart failure of integrated disease management program with heart failure clinic, patient education and telephone follow-up. METHODS: A total of 145 hospitalized patients with chronic heart failure and LVEF ≤ 45% or patients with LVEF > 45% and NT-proBNP > 1500 ng/L were divided into conventional group (n = 71) and interventional group (n = 74). Patients were followed for 10 to 12 months. RESULTS: Baseline clinical characteristics, LVEF and dose of evidence-based medicine were similar between the 2 groups. During follow-up, the NYHA functional class was higher in conventional group than interventional group (3.2 ± 0.5 vs 1.4 ± 0.5, P < 0.05), and the LVEF deteriorated in the conventional group and improved from 34% to 40%in the interventional group. The proportions of self-monitoring of weight, blood pressure and pulse rate in the interventional group were significantly higher than those of conventional group (P < 0.05). Among patients with systolic heart failure, 40% patients in the interventional group and 11% patients in the conventional group achieved the target doses of ß-blockers (P < 0.05). Cardiovascular event rate of conventional group and interventional group is 91.5% and 27.0% respectively (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Integrated disease management program with heart failure clinic, patient education and telephone follow-up can improve patient compliance to heart failure treatment, improve cardiac function and reduce cardiovascular event rate.

The difference in leaf stable carbon isotope discrimination (delta) of 18 representative Schima superba provenances was investigated based on three provenance trails located at Jian' ou of Fujian Province and Chun' an and Qingyuan of Zhejiang Province, and the geographic variation pattern and the effects of trial site and provenances growth rate were studied. Significant differences in leaf delta were observed among the provenaces, and the differences in leaf delta value between the highest and lowest provenances reached 6.9%, 3.0%, and 3.7% in 3 experimental sites, respectively. A classic latitudinal clinical variation pattern was found, because there were significant correlations between the leaf delta value and the latitude of seed sources in all the 3 sites while no significant correlations were observed between the leaf delta value and the longitude of the seed sources. The southern provenances showed higher leaf delta value than the northern provenances, indicating that the water use efficiency (WUE) was lower in southern provenances. The leaf delta value of different provenances was demonstrated to be greatly affected by the environment of trial sites. The leaf delta value increased significantly with the improvement of site environment and with the increase of annual rainfall. Significant positive correlations were observed between the leaf delta value and the growth traits including tree height, DBH, total number of lateral branches, and length of the strongest lateral branch, which indicated that the provenances with higher growth rate and denser crown had larger leaf delta value. Two and four superior provenances with high growth rate and low leaf delta value (or high WUE) were selected for Jian' ou of Fujian and Chun' an of Zhejiang, respectively.
