RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To assess and compare the microtensile dentin bond strength (µTBS) and interfacial micromorphology of three universal adhesives. METHODS: 96 human molars were assigned to three universal adhesives: Single Bond Universal (SBU), CLEARFIL Universal Bond Quick (UBQ), and RE-GEN Universal Adhesive (REGEN). Adhesives were applied in self-etch mode. SBU and REGEN were applied following the manufacturers' instructions. UBQ was divided into two subgroups: one following the manufacturer's instructions (UBQ Short) and the other with an extended application time (UBQ Extended). Teeth were restored with nanohybrid resin composite. Specimens were divided into immediate and delayed subgroups. The delayed subgroups were stored for 6 months and subjected to 5000 thermocycles. µTBS was tested, and failure mode was analyzed. Interfacial micromorphology was assessed using a scanning electron microscope. The data were statistically analyzed (p⟨ 0.05). RESULTS: The adhesive choice, aging, and their interaction significantly affected µTBS. SBU exhibited the highest immediate µTBS, comparable to UBQ (Extended) and REGEN, and significantly higher than UBQ (Short). In delayed testing, SBU outperformed the other adhesives. CONCLUSIONS: Aging negatively affected the µTBS of UBQ and REGEN, while SBU wasn't affected. The quick application concept of UBQ deteriorated its µTBS compared to the extended application time.

The growing concern about the environmental consequences of anthropogenic CO2 emissions significantly stimulated the research of low-cost, efficient, and recyclable solid adsorbents for CO2 capture. In this work, a series of MgO-supported mesoporous carbon nitride adsorbents with different MgO contents (xMgO/MCN) was prepared using a facile process. The obtained materials were tested for CO2 capture from 10 vol% CO2 mixture gas with N2 using a fixed bed adsorber at atmospheric pressure. At 25 ºC, the bare MCN support and unsupported MgO samples demonstrated CO2 capture capacities of 0.99, and 0.74 mmol g-1, respectively, which were lower than those of the xMgO/MCN composites.The incorporation of MgO into the MCN improved the CO2 uptake, and the 20MgO/MCN exhibited the highest CO2 capture capacity of 1.15 mmol g-1 at 25 °C. The improved performance of the 20MgO/MCN nanohybrid can be possibly assigned to the presence of high content of highly dispersed MgO NPs along with its improved textural properties in terms of high specific surface area (215 m2g-1), large pore volume (0.22 cm3g-1), and abundant mesoporous structure. The efffects of temperature and CO2 flow rate were also investigated on the CO2 capture performance of 20MgO/MCN. Temperature was found to have a negative influence on the CO2 capture capacity of the 20MgO/MCN, which decreased from 1.15 to 0.65 mmol g-1with temperature rise from 25 C to 150º C, due to the endothermicity of the process. Similarly, the capture capacity decreased from 1.15 to 0.54 mmol g-1 with the increase of the flow rate from 50 to 200 ml minute-1 respectively. Importantly, 20MgO/MCN showed excellent reusability with consistent CO2 capture capacity over five sequential sorption-desorption cycles, suggesting its suitability for the practical capture of CO2.

The aim of the current study was to assess the structural centrality and microstructural integrity of the cortical hubs of the salience network, the anterior insular cortex (AIC) subregions and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and their relationship to cognitive and affective impairment in PD. MRI of 53 PD patients and 15 age-matched controls included 3D-T1 for anatomical registration, and diffusion tensor imaging for probabilistic tractography. Network topological measures of eigenvector and betweenness centrality were calculated for ventral (vAI) and dorsal (dAI) AIC. Microstructural tract integrity between vAI, dAI and the ACC was quantified with fractional anisotrophy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD). Structural integrity and connectivity were related to cognitive and affective scores. The dAI had significantly higher eigenvector centrality in PD than controls (p < 0.01), associated with higher depression scores (left dAI only, rs = 0.28, p < 0.05). Tracts between dAI and ACC showed lower FA and higher MD in PD (p < 0.05), and associated with lower semantic fluency, working memory and executive functioning, and higher anxiety scores (range 0.002 < p < 0.05). This study provides evidence for clinically relevant structural damage to the cortical hubs of the salience network in PD, possibly due to extensive local neuropathology and loss of interconnecting AIC-ACC tracts.

AIM: The insular cortex consists of a heterogenous cytoarchitecture and diverse connections and is thought to integrate autonomic, cognitive, emotional and interoceptive functions to guide behaviour. In Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), it reveals α-synuclein pathology in advanced stages. The aim of this study is to assess the insular cortex cellular and subregional vulnerability to α-synuclein pathology in well-characterized PD and DLB subjects. METHODS: We analysed postmortem insular tissue from 24 donors with incidental Lewy body disease, PD, PD with dementia (PDD), DLB and age-matched controls. The load and distribution of α-synuclein pathology and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) cells were studied throughout the insular subregions. The selective involvement of von Economo neurons (VENs) in the anterior insula and astroglia was assessed in all groups. RESULTS: A decreasing gradient of α-synuclein pathology load from the anterior periallocortical agranular towards the intermediate dysgranular and posterior isocortical granular insular subregions was found. Few VENs revealed α-synuclein inclusions while astroglial synucleinopathy was a predominant feature in PDD and DLB. TH neurons were predominant in the agranular and dysgranular subregions but did not reveal α-synuclein inclusions or significant reduction in density in patient groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights the vulnerability of the anterior agranular insula to α-synuclein pathology in PD, PDD and DLB. Whereas VENs and astrocytes were affected in advanced disease stages, insular TH neurons were spared. Owing to the anterior insula's affective, cognitive and autonomic functions, its greater vulnerability to pathology indicates a potential contribution to nonmotor deficits in PD and DLB.
