RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Bronchial stenosis associated with bronchial anastomosis dehiscence after lung transplantation is a catastrophic complication following lung transplantation with a paucity of therapeutic solutions. PURPOSE: To describe an adaptation of the parallel stent grafting technique in the pulmonary arterial territory to treat this challenging situation. RESEARCH DESIGN: This is a case report of a 52-year-old patient who presented bronchus stenosis and bronchial anastomosis dehiscence after lung transplantion. Bronchial stenting and lung retransplantation were contraindicated. Therefore, an endovascular approach using pulmonary artery endograft placement to prevent bleeding during repeated right bronchial balloon dilation was propposed. The technique consists of the deployment of an aortic extender endoprosthesis in the right main pulmonary artery and a balloon expandable stent in the upper lobe pulmonary artery (using a parallel graft configuration) through the common femoral and right internal jugular veins, respectively. Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiogram and one-lung ventilatory ventilation are needed. RESULTS: The patient underwent a new bronchoscopy 16 days after the procedure, that showed epithelization at the previous eroded zone, enabling bronchocopic balloon dialtion to be safely performed. A post-operative contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed an adequate positioning of the stent grafts. Despite all eforts, the patient succumbed to ventilator associated pneumonia on postoperative day 108. DATA ANALYSIS: The technique's advantages include its feasibility even in situations in which other techniques may be contraindicated and its potential use in emergencies. Its limitations include the need for experienced interventionists to perform it, and the potential risk of acute tricuspid regurgitation. CONCLUSION: This study illustrates the early feasibility of the parallel stent grafting technique applied to the pulmonary artery territory. However, it's safety profile regarding infectious risk was not demontrated.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Heart transplantation (HTx) has emerged as a pivotal intervention for end-stage heart failure, offering significant improvements in survival and quality of life. This manuscript elucidates the landscape of HTx across Latin America (LATAM) from its advent in 1968 through December 2022, shedding light on its evolution, current practices, and regional disparities. METHODS: We distributed a structured questionnaire to the national coordinators or representatives of the Interamerican Council of Heart Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension, collating responses from 20 LATAM nations. This approach facilitated a comprehensive aggregation of regional HTx data. RESULTS: A total of 12,374 HTx were performed in 166 centers across 16 LATAM countries, with Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia accounting for the majority of procedures. Pediatric transplants represented 9% of the total caseload, and combined organ transplants were reported in 62.5% of the participating countries, underscoring the complexity and breadth of transplant services in the region. CONCLUSION: Despite facing infrastructural and logistical challenges, LATAM has demonstrated a robust capacity to conduct high-complexity transplant procedures. The establishment of a structured, regional HTx registry is imperative to enhance data collection and analysis, which in turn can inform clinical decision-making and policy development, ultimately improving patient outcomes across the continent.

RESUMEN

Under two detection schemes, this study analyzes one of the most destructive weather systems - the explosive cyclones - in the South Atlantic, from 2010 to 2020. Then, two methods are presented to study these systems: the Observational Method (OBSM) and the Automated Method (AUTM). The first uses visual analysis of the mean sea level pressure (mslp) fields and functions to identify the local minimums using the Grid Analysis and Display (GrADS) software. The second utilizes a function from OpenGrADS called mfhilo. It shows the local minimum in the grid using laplacian, magnitude, and percentile. Two shell algorithms for data manipulation are used for the AUTM: one to trace the cyclones' trajectories according to a previously defined fixed area and the other to separate them into explosives. The OBSM methodology showed 271 cases averaging 25 yearly and revealed important characteristics regarding the intensities. According to AUTM's methodology, from the 2705 ordinary cyclone cases identified, 299 are explosives. There is a clear seasonality pattern in the systems' distribution along South America, similar to OBSM, but more highlighted. In summer, they concentrate at high latitudes, while in winter and spring, they are assembled near southern Brazilian and Uruguayan coasts.

RESUMEN

Eye tracking technology is a high-potential tool for different mathematic cognition research areas. Moreover, there is a dire need for more studies that provide detailed information on the quality of registered eye data. This study aimed to illustrate the applicability of eye tracking in the examination of mathematical cognition, focusing specifically on primary school students completing a computerized mental arithmetic task. Results suggested that the eye tracking device effectively captured high-quality eye movement data when primary school children engaged in this specific task. Furthermore, significant negative correlations have been found between task performance and number of eye fixations. Finally, eye movements distinctions between "Areas of Interest" have been found, indicating different visual tracking associated with different components of arithmetic calculations. This study underscores the extensive possibilities for future research employing eye tracking devices during computerized calculation tasks as assessment tools to explore the complex visual and cognitive processes.

RESUMEN

Objective: Characterize the neurophysiological effects of mild hypothermia on stroke and spreading depolarizations (SDs) in gyrencephalic brains. Methods: Left middle cerebral arteries (MCAs) of six hypothermic and six normothermic pigs were permanently occluded (MCAo). Hypothermia began 1 h after MCAo and continued throughout the experiment. ECoG signals from both frontoparietal cortices were recorded. Five-minute ECoG epochs were collected 5 min before, at 5 min, 4, 8, 12, and 16 h after MCAo, and before, during, and after SDs. Power spectra were decomposed into fast (alpha, beta, and gamma) and slow (delta and theta) frequency bands. Results: In the vascular insulted hemisphere under normothermia, electrodes near the ischemic core exhibited power decay across all frequency bands at 5 min and the 4th hour after MCAo. The same pattern was registered in the two furthest electrodes at the 12th and 16th hour. When mild hypothermia was applied in the vascular insulted hemispheres, the power decay was generalized and seen even in electrodes with uncompromised blood flow. During SD analysis, hypothermia maintained increased delta and beta power during the three phases of SDs in the furthest electrode from the ischemic core, followed by the second furthest and third electrode in the beta band during preSD and postSD segments. However, in hypothermic conditions, the third electrode showed lower delta, theta, and alpha power. Conclusion: Mild hypothermia attenuates all frequency bands in the vascularly compromised hemisphere, irrespective of the cortical location. During SD formation, it preserves power spectra more significantly in electrodes further from the ischemic core.

RESUMEN

The contents of 24 elements were determined in seven species of macroalgae collected in Ceara-Brazil, in the rainy and dry seasons of 2022. The samples were digested, and the analytes were quantified by ICP-OES and Hg by direct analyzer. The CRM CD-200 was analyzed for accuracy and obtained recoveries were higher than 95 %. The seaweed species have different inorganic element profiles with predominant elements being: Ca, K, Na, Mg and P. The Sargassum vulgare species stood out for its Hg and As contents (1.479 ± 0.005 mg kg-1 and 172 ± 6 mg kg-1, both in the rainy seasons). Ulva lactuca attracted attention for its high concentration of V (46.4 ± 3.4 mg kg-1, rainy season). In general, the elemental content levels in the macroalgae samples were higher in the rainy season. Long-term studies to comprehend the effect of seasonality on the elemental composition of seaweed must be carried out.

RESUMEN

This study aims to investigate the effects of melatonin on follicular growth, viability and ultrastructure, as well as on the levels of mRNA for antioxidant enzymes, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and meiotic progression in oocytes from in vitro cultured bovine early antral follicles. To this end, isolated early antral follicles (500-600 µm) were cultured in TCM-199+ alone or supplemented with 10-6 , 10-7 or 10-8 M melatonin at 38.5°C with 5% CO2 for 8 days. Follicle diameters were evaluated at days 0, 4 and 8 of culture. At the end of culture, ultrastructure, chromatin configuration, viability (calcein-AM and ethidium homodimer-1 staining), and the levels of ROS and mRNA for catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were investigated in oocyte-granulosa cell complexes (OGCs). The results showed that early antral follicles cultured with 10-6 and 10-8 M melatonin had a progressive and significant increase in their diameters throughout the culture period (p < .05). Additionally, oocytes from follicles cultured with 10-7 or 10-8 M melatonin had increased fluorescence for calcein-AM, while those cultured with 10-6 or 10-7 M had reduced fluorescence for ethidium homodimer-1. Different from follicles cultured in other treatments, those cultured with 10-8 M melatonin had well-preserved ultrastructure of oocyte and granulosa cells. Melatonin, however, did not influence the levels of ROS, the mitochondrial activity, oocyte meiotic resumption and expression mRNA for SOD, CAT, GPX1 and PRDX6. In conclusion, the presence of 10-8 M melatonin in culture medium improves viability and preserves the ultrastructure of oocyte and granulosa cells of early antral follicles cultured in vitro.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Biopsies of peripheral nerve tumors (PNTs) are often used to plan an efficient treatment strategy. However, performing a biopsy is controversial when the mass is likely to be a benign PNT (BPNT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the side effects of biopsies in patients with potential PNTs. METHODS: A retrospective and cross-sectional study was conducted on 24 patients who underwent biopsy of a mass of unknown origin potentially originating from a peripheral nerve (MUOPON), performed in nonspecialty services, and who were later referred to the authors' service for resection of their lesion between January 2005 and December 2022. The patients were evaluated for pain score, presence of a motor or sensory deficit, biopsy diagnosis, and definitive histopathological postsurgical diagnosis. RESULTS: The location of the tumor was supraclavicular in 7 (29.2%) patients, in the axillary region in 3 (12.5%), in the upper limb in 7 (29.2%), and in the lower limb in 7 (29.2%). Twenty-one (87.5%) patients were evaluated by MRI before biopsy, and 3 (12.5%) underwent ultrasound. One patient did not have an examination before the procedure. Based on the biopsy findings, 12 (50%) analyses had an inconclusive histopathological result. The preexisting pain worsened, as measured 1 week after biopsy, in all patients and had remained unchanged at the first evaluation by the authors (median 3 months, range 2-4 months). In 1 case, the open biopsy had to be interrupted because the patient experienced excruciating pain. Four (16.7%) patients developed motor deficits. Subsequent surgery was hampered by scar formation and intratumoral hemorrhage in 5 (20.8%) patients. The initial diagnosis obtained by biopsy differed from the final histopathological diagnosis in all patients, of whom 21 (87.5%) had BPNTs, 2 (8.3%) malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, and 1 (4.2%) an ancient schwannoma. CONCLUSIONS: Biopsies of PNTs are controversial and may result in misdiagnosis, neuropathic pain, or neurological deficit due to axonal damage, and they may also hinder microsurgical resection when if performed when not indicated. Indications for biopsy of an MUOPON must be carefully considered, especially if BPNT is a possible diagnosis.

RESUMEN

The most adequate fixative solution for equine ovarian tissue is still to be determined as a tool to evaluate the improvement of methodological studies in assisted reproductive techniques and fertility preservation. This study aimed to evaluate a short-time ethanol 70% (ST-EtOH, 45 min) exposure as an alternative fixative compared with two classically fixatives [Carnoy's (CAR) solution and paraformaldehyde 4% (PFA)] at different fixation times (6 h, 12 h). The end points evaluated were morphology and classes of preantral follicles, follicular and stromal cell densities, and follicular and oocyte nuclear diameters in equine ovarian tissue. Ovaries (n = 6) from ovariectomized young mares were fragmented (3 × 3 × 1 mm; 20 fragments/ovary) and fixed in the tested treatments. Overall, a total of 11,661 preantral follicles were evaluated in 1444 histological slides. The ST-EtOH similarly preserved the preantral follicle morphometry and stromal cell density compared to the PFA fixative, regardless of the exposure time. Nonetheless, the CAR fixative solution had the greatest percentage of normal preantral follicles and the highest stromal cell density among all treatments. In conclusion, Carnoy's solution must be preferred compared with ST-EtOH and PFA fixatives for studies concerning the cellular morphology of equine ovarian tissue. Moreover, ST-EtOH fixative is a good alternative for equine ovarian tissue when a quick histological evaluation is required instead of more time-consuming and expensive techniques. Additional studies concerning the impact of different fixatives on the ultrastructure of cellular populations and their compatibility with IHC and molecular techniques in equine ovarian tissue are warranted.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The green revolution model that is followed in the Brazilian Cerrado is dependent on mechanization, chemical fertilization for soil dressing and correction, and the use of herbicides. Paraquat is a methyl viologen herbicide marketed as bipyridylium dichloride salts and used (in low doses) to combat weeds in their post-emergence stage. It is a non-selective pesticide that causes the peroxidation of the lipids that make up the cell membrane, and when it comes into contact with foliage, it results in the death of the plant. Methods: The effect of water molecules co-crystallized in Paraquat salt structures was analyzed in anhydrous, dihydrate, and trihydrate forms to understand those physicochemical properties in its redox activity. The frontier molecular orbitals were also carried out using DFT to obtain the chemical reactivity of the bipyridylium cation. Finally, the supramolecular arrangements were evaluated to analyze the physicochemical stability and acquire insights on superoxide anions. Results and discussion: The electronic structure indicated that the BP cation presents an acidic character due to its low ELUMO value, while the salt has a more basic character due to its high EHOMO value. For this reason, the BP ion is more susceptible to reduction during the weeds' photosynthesis process. During the process of plant photosynthesis, PQ is reduced to form a stable radical cation. In the supramolecular arrangement, the presence of water molecules increases the number of strong H-bonds, while the weak/moderate H-bonds are stabilized. PQ's toxic effects are observed in wildlife, domesticated animals, human populations, and ecosystems. The influence of PQ on the terrestrial environment is limited because of the soil adsorption capacity associated with good agricultural practices. The current use of good agricultural practices in the Cerrado seems not to prevent the environmental impacts of herbicides like PQ because it aims for the expansion and profitability of large-scale farming based on input-intensive practices instead of sustainable agriculture processes.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the effects of cyclic adenosine monophosphate modulating during cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) pre-maturation and the role of melatonin on in vitro maturation (IVM) of bovine COCs. In experiment one, COCs were pre-matured for 8 h in control medium or with 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) and forskolin, IBMX and C-type natriuretic peptide, c-type natriuretic peptide and forskolin or IBMX, forskolin and c-type natriuretic peptide. Then, meiotic progression was evaluated. In experiment two, COCs were pre-matured, followed by IVM in control medium alone or with 10-6, 10-7 or 10-8 M melatonin. After IVM, chromatin configuration, transzonal projections (TZPs), reactive oxygen species, mitochondrial distribution, ultrastructure and mRNA expression for antioxidant enzymes were evaluated. In experiment 1, COCs pre-matured with both C-type natriuretic peptide and forskolin or C-type natriuretic peptide, forskolin and IBMX had lower meiotic resumption rate when compared to control. Considering that IBMX had not an additional effect to potentiate inhibition of meiotic resumption, a combination of C-type natriuretic peptide and forskolin was chosen. In experiment 2, COCs matured with 10-8 M melatonin had greater rates of meiotic resumption when compared to the other treatments (P < 0.05). The COCs matured with 10-7 or 10-8 M melatonin had greater mitochondrial activity (P < 0.05), while those matured with 10-6 or 10-8 M of melatonin had greater levels of TZPs. Ultrastructure of oocyte and cumulus cells after IVM with melatonin was relatively well preserved. COCs matured with 10-8 M melatonin increased mRNA expression for superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) (P < 0.05), when compared to non-cultured and pre-matured COCs, respectively. In conclusion, bovine COC pre-maturation with C-type natriuretic peptide and forskolin, followed by IVM with 10-8 M melatonin improves meiotic resumption rates, TZPs, mitochondrial distribution and mRNA expression for SOD and CAT.

RESUMEN

Three-dimensional reconstruction of the corneal surface provides a powerful tool for managing corneal diseases. This study proposes a novel method for reconstructing the corneal surface from elevation point clouds, using modal schemes capable of reproducing corneal shapes using surface polynomial functions. The multivariable polynomial fitting was performed using a non-dominated sorting multivariable genetic algorithm (NS-MVGA). Standard reconstruction methods using least-squares discrete fitting (LSQ) and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) were compared with the evolutionary algorithm-based approach. The study included 270 corneal surfaces of 135 eyes of 102 patients (ages 11-63) sorted in two groups: control (66 eyes of 33 patients) and keratoconus (KC) (69 eyes of 69 patients). Tomographic information (Sirius, Costruzione Strumenti Oftalmici, Italy) was processed using Matlab. The goodness of fit for each method was evaluated using mean squared error (MSE), measured at the same nodes where the elevation data were collected. Polynomial fitting based on NS-MVGA improves MSE values by 86% compared to LSQ-based methods in healthy patients. Moreover, this new method improves aberrated surface reconstruction by an average value of 56% if compared with LSQ-based methods in keratoconus patients. Finally, significant improvements were also found in morpho-geometric parameters, such as asphericity and corneal curvature radii.

RESUMEN

Due to the excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics in farming and clinic, pathogens developed resistance mechanisms to currently used drugs. Thus, because of this resistance, drugs become ineffective, leading to public health problems worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), microbial resistance to drugs is one of the most threats that humanity must face. Therefore, it is imperative to seek alternative methods to overcome microbial resistance. Here, the potential of natural or synthetic antimicrobial peptides to overcome microbial resistance will be discussed, and how peptides could be a source for new therapeutics molecules. In this context, antimicrobial peptides (natural or synthetic) are considered promising molecules based on their antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, making them eligible for developing new drugs. In addition, they can act synergistically with existing drugs on the market, revealing a broad spectrum of applications.

RESUMEN

Monitoring and observation over the surface of the Earth have been a matter of global interest. In this path, recent efforts aim to develop a spatial mission to perform remote sensing applications. Mainly, CubeSat nanosatellites have emerged as a standard for developing low-weight and small-sized instruments. In terms of payloads, state-of-the-art optical systems for CubeSats are expensive and designed to work in general use cases. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents a 1.4 U compact optical system to acquire spectral images from a CubeSat standard satellite at the height of 550 km. To validate the proposed architecture, optical simulations using ray tracing simulation software are presented. Because the performance of computer vision tasks is highly related to data quality, we compared the optical system in terms of the classification performance on a real remote sensing application. The performances of the optical characterization and land cover classification show that the proposed optical system achieves a compact instrument, operating at a spectral range from 450 nm to 900 nm discretized on 35 spectral bands. The optical system has an overall f-number of 3.41 with a ground sampling distance of 52.8 m and a swath of 40 km. Additionally, the design parameters for each optical element are publicly available for validation, repeatability, and reproducibility of the results.

RESUMEN

The goal of this study was to evaluate a sample of family members, among whom individuals were undergoing inpatient treatment for substance use disorder and identify predictors of engagement in a family support program. A total of 159 family nuclei were analyzed; 36 (22.6%) completed the program and 123 (77.4%) did not complete the program. Compared to nonparticipants, participants were majorly female (91.9%), younger (43.3 years old, SD = 16.5), unemployed, homemakers, and not financially independent (56.7%). The results showed the predominant participation of wives (29.7%) and offspring (mostly daughters, 27.0%). Participants also reported a higher rate of depressive symptoms (p = 0.003) and worse quality of life, primarily environmental. The frequency of domestic violence was higher among participants than among nonparticipants (27.9% vs. 9.0%, p = 0.005). Engagement in family support programs is the first challenge to overcome. The nonparticipants' profile shows the need to adopt engagement strategies that encompass males and facilitate the participation of breadwinning family members.

RESUMEN

For decades, lectins have been used as probes in glycobiology and this usage has gradually spread to other domains of Life Science. Nowadays, researchers investigate glycan recognition with lectins in diverse biotechnology and clinical applications, addressing key questions regarding binding specificity. The latter is documented in scattered and heterogeneous sources, and this situation calls for a centralized and easy-access reference. To address this need, an on-line solution called BiotechLec (https://www.unilectin.eu/biotechlec) is proposed in a new section of UniLectin, a platform dedicated to lectin molecular knowledge.

RESUMEN

Dittrichia plants were exposed to thallium (Tl) stress (10, 50, and 100 µM) for 7 days. The Tl toxicity altered the absorption and accumulation of other nutrients. In both the roots and the leaves, there was a decline in K, Mg, and Fe content, but an increase in Ca, Mn, and Zn. Chlorophylls decreased, as did the photosynthetic efficiency, while carotenoids increased. Oxidative stress in the roots was reflected in increased lipid peroxidation. There was more production of superoxide (O2.-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and nitric oxide (NO) in the roots than in the leaves, with increases in both organs in response to Tl toxicity, except for O2.- production in the roots, which fluctuated. There was increased hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production, especially in the leaves. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), and glutathione reductase (GR) showed increased activities, except for APX and MDHAR in the roots and GR in the leaves. The components of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle were affected. Thus, ascorbate (AsA) increased, while dehydroascorbate (DHA), reduced glutathione (GSH), and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) decreased, except for in the roots at 100 µM Tl, which showed increased GSH. These Tl toxicity-induced alterations modify the AsA/DHA and GSH/GSSG redox status. The NO and H2S interaction may act by activating the antioxidant system. The effects of Tl could be related to its strong affinity for binding with -SH groups, thus altering the functionality of proteins and the cellular redox state.
