RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to describe population and morphological characteristics of preantral follicles of not pregnant cows, pregnant cows and fetus. Ten ovaries of non-pregnant Nelore cows, eighteen ovaries of pregnant cows and eighteen ovaries of fetus were used. For pregnant cows, six ovaries from each third (initial, middle and final) were evaluated, acquired from a slaughterhouse. For fetus, the same methodology and proportion of ovaries were used. Ovaries were washed, fixed and embedded in paraffin. They were then sectioned in longitudinal sections and stained by the Hematoxylin-Eosin method. Preantral follicles were classified according to morphology (primordial, primary and secondary) and degree of viability (intact and in initial, moderate and marked atresia). Descriptive and statistical analyzes were performed through KS300 image analysis program and Tukey's test. A greater proportion of primordial follicles were found in all categories. Secondary follicles were not observed in ovaries of fetus and cows in the initial third of pregnancy. All the ovary dimensions were higher in non-pregnant cows and in the final third of cows' pregnancy, and lower in final third of pregnancy fetus. It was concluded that follicle isolation was effective in describing population and morphological characteristics of preantral follicles of cows and fetus.(AU)

RESUMEN

In this study, we evaluated genetic factors related to the mineral density during post-menopause. We evaluated 110 women in the first 5 years post-menopause, without previous hormone replacement therapy. Cytochrome P450 17 (CYP17) (rs743572), catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) (rs4680), and estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) (rs9322331) were examined for the presence of polymorphisms. Clinical data were collected by anamnesis; all patients had the osseous densitometry examined using a lunar instrument to determine mineral osseous densitometry in the lumbar column (L2-L4). CYP17, COMT, and ESR1 genotyping was carried out by polymerase chain reaction with DNA collected from buccal swabs. The average age was 51.96 years. The average weights of the patients in control and osteopenia groups were 70.25 ± 12.00 and 62.45 ± 11.64, respectively (P = 0.001) and body mass index (P = 0.006; control: 29.43 ± 5.25; osteopenia: 26.72 ± 4.57). Related to CYP17 polymorphisms, 28.18% of women were TT (wild-type homozygous), 60% were TC (heterozygous), and 11.82% were CC (mutated homozygous). Related to COMT polymorphisms, 53.64% of women were GG (wild-type homozygous), 37.27% were GA (heterozygous), and 9.09% were AA (mutated homozygous). Related to ESR1, 53.64% of women were CC (wild-type homozygous), 40.91% were CT (heterozygous), and 5.45% were TT (mutated homozygous). The ESR1 variant allele was significantly higher in the osteopenia group when compared with women in the normal group (P = 0.02). ESR1 may be associated with low mineral osseous densitometry, while CYP17 and COMT gene polymorphisms were not associated with mineral osseous densitometry.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between smoking status and exercise capacity, physical activity in daily life and health-related quality of life in physically independent, elderly (≥60 years) individuals. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, observational study. SETTING: Community-dwelling, elderly individuals. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred and fifty-four elderly individuals were categorised into four groups according to their smoking status: never smokers (n=57), passive smokers (n=30), ex-smokers (n=45) and current smokers (n=22). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Exercise capacity [6-minute walk test (6MWT)], physical activity in daily life (step counting) and health-related quality of life [36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire] were assessed. RESULTS: Current and ex-smokers had lower mean exercise capacity compared with never smokers: 90 [standard deviation (SD) 10] % predicted, 91 (SD 12) % predicted and 100 (SD 13) % predicted distance on 6MWT, respectively [mean differences -9.8%, 95% confidence intervals (CI) -17.8 to -1.8 and -9.1%, 95% CI -15.4 to -2.7, respectively; P<0.05 for both]. The level of physical activity did not differ between the groups, but was found to correlate negatively with the level of nicotine dependence in current smokers (r=-0.47, P=0.03). The median score for the mental health dimension of SF-36 was worse in passive {72 [interquartile range (IQR) 56 to 96] points} and current [76 (IQR 55 to 80) points] smokers compared with ex-smokers [88 (IQR 70 to 100) points] (median differences -16 points, 95% CI -22.2 to -3.0 and -12 points, 95% CI -22.8 to -2.4, respectively; P<0.05 for both). CONCLUSIONS: Among elderly individuals, current smokers had lower exercise capacity than never smokers. Although the level of physical activity did not differ between the groups, an association was found with smoking. Tobacco exposure was associated with worse scores for the mental health dimension of SF-36 in physically independent, elderly individuals.

RESUMEN

The presence of magnetic material in tissues of lateral line and ocellar spot of tomtates Haemulon aurolineatum is shown using the ferromagnetic resonance technique. For the first time magnetic material is reported in the ocellar spot. The magnetic material detected in these structures of H. aurolineatum suggests that this species could use magnetic orientation during its nocturnal foraging, and the relevance and role of this material with respect to schooling movements is discussed.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of different centrifugation forces in bovine sperm separation by discontinuous Percoll gradients for in vitro fertilization IVF. The semen samples from each bull were pooled or each bull were centrifuged separately and centrifuged in discontinuous Percoll gradients (30, 60 and 90%) at different forces: F1 (9000×g), F2 (6500×g), F3 (4500×g) and F4 (2200×g), according experiment. The sperm samples were evaluated to determine the concentration, motility, vigor, morphology, reactive oxygen species (ROS), integrity of the plasma membrane, lipid peroxidation, antioxidants and embryo development were also evaluated. No difference was observed in the concentration of sperm submitted to different centrifugation forces. The total percentage of motile sperm was increased after centrifugation at F3 and F4, and the ROS production at F1 was greater than the other forces. When the bulls semen were processed individually, no significant differences were observed for the sperm quality parameters between F1 and F4, including lipid peroxidation, antioxidants, cleavage rate and average time to the first cleavage. This work demonstrated for the first time that centrifugation at 2200×g enhanced the sperm penetration and fertilization rates without reducing sperm recovery compared to the typical centrifugation force (9000×g) currently used by the commercial bovine IVF industry.

RESUMEN

Cleft lip and palate occurs in approximately 1 in every 750 live human births, making it one of the most common congenital malformations. Surgical closure of the palatal cleft does not always result in a velopharyngeal port capable of supporting normal speech. The University of Florida (UF), in collaboration with the University of São Paulo (USP), is engaging in a 5-year prospective, randomized controlled study to compare velopharyngeal function for speech outcomes between patients undergoing palatoplasty for complete unilateral cleft lip and palate performed using the von Langenbeck procedure with intravelar velarplasty and those receiving the Furlow double-reversing Z-plasty palatoplasty. The von Langenbeck procedure was selected as the time-tested standard against which the Furlow procedure could be judged. The Furlow procedure, a relatively new operation, has been reported to yield substantially higher rates of velopharyngeal competency for speech than have most other reported series and theoretically should result in less disturbance to midfacial growth. A total of 608 patients will be entered into one of two age categories. Inclusion of two age groups will allow a comparison of results between patients having surgery before 1 year of age (9-12 months) and patients undergoing surgery at approximately 1.5 years of age (15-18 months). Speech data will be collected and will be available for definitive analysis throughout the last 3 years of the study. Collection of preliminary growth data will require more than 5 years; growth analysis is anticipated to continue until all patients have reached maturity. The Hospital for Research and Rehabilitation of Patients with Cleft Lip and Palate at the University of São Paulo (USP-HPRLLP) in Bauru, Brazil, is uniquely situated for conducting this study. The well-equipped and modern facilities are staffed by well-trained specialists representing all disciplines in cleft-palate management. In addition, an already existing social services network throughout Brazil will ensure excellent follow-up of study cases. The clinical caseload at this institution currently exceeds 22,000, and more than 1200 new cases are added annually. This project represents a unique opportunity to obtain prospective data from a large number of subjects while controlling the variables that have traditionally plagued cleft-palate studies. This study is designed to determine which of the two proposed surgical procedures is superior in constructing a velum capable of affecting velopharyngeal competency for the development of normal speech.

RESUMEN

Different distances related to the nasal transphenoidal approach were measured on the hemiheads of eighteen cadavers in order to study its limits and advantages. The main mean measures obtained (mm) were: major diameter of the nostril 15.18: height of the nasal cavity 44.11, nostril-sella turcica distance 71.71. These results show that the nasal approach is wide and direct to the sella turcica. The present study demonstrate the possibility of preservation of the cartilaginous septum and other structures which are usually damaged when the sublabial approach is employed.
