RESUMEN

Insomnia is increasingly prevalent with significant associations with depression. Delineating specific neural circuits for chronic insomnia disorder (CID) with and without depressive symptoms is fundamental to develop precision diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we examine static, dynamic and network topology changes of individual large-scale functional network for CID with (CID-D) and without depression to reveal their specific neural underpinnings. Seventeen individual-specific functional brain networks are obtained using a regularized nonnegative matrix factorization technique. Disorders-shared and -specific differences in static and dynamic large-scale functional network connectivities within or between the cognitive control network, dorsal attention network, visual network, limbic network, and default mode network are found for CID and CID-D. Additionally, CID and CID-D groups showed compromised network topological architecture including reduced small-world properties, clustering coefficients and modularity indicating decreased network efficiency and impaired functional segregation. Moreover, the altered neuroimaging indices show significant associations with clinical manifestations and could serve as effective neuromarkers to distinguish among healthy controls, CID and CID-D. Taken together, these findings provide novel insights into the neural basis of CID and CID-D, which may facilitate developing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Monitoring food freshness is considerably important for food safety. In this study, a smart pH-responsive fluorescence hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose-κ-carrageenan-fluorescein isothiocyanate-NH2-CaAl2O4 (H-K-F-N) film was prepared. Taking synergetic advantage of the pH-dependent behavior of fluorescein isothiocyanate dye and the luminescence characteristics of calcium aluminate phosphor, the film exhibited a unique strong pH-responsive fluorescence with an exceptional linear relationship (correlation coefficient, R2 = 0.9993) across a wide pH rang of 2.0-12.0. Moreover, the H-K-F-N film, as a smart sensor, could be used to estimate the total volatile basic nitrogen and total viable count through fluorescence intensity based on the partial least squares regression model and support vector machine regression, respectively. Leveraging the relationship between the fluorescent image's digital signals and food freshness indicators, a smartphone-assisted system was developed. These results demonstrated that H-K-F-N film is promising for applications in intelligent food packaging and food safety monitoring.

Oesophagomediastinal fistula is uncommon. Oesophageal fistulas, may manifest as recurrent pneumonias. While pulmonary infections can lead to pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysms (PAPs), particularly in fungal infections. PAPs pose a rupture risk, potentially causing life-threatening hemoptysis. We report a unique case of a 45-year-old male who presented with sudden cough, dyspnea, and hemoptysis. Bronchoscopy triggered massive hemoptysis, necessitating emergency embolization. Persistent hemoptysis prompted further imaging, revealing an aneurysmal dilation located next to the spine and infectious lesions, suggesting an oesophagomediastinal fistula. After initiating therapy with Amphotericin B Cholesterol Sulfate Complex and fistula closure, the patient's hemoptysis resolved, with imaging resolution of the PAP. Long-term Voriconazole therapy ensured continued improvement. This case highlights the rarity and severity of such fistulas may be associated with fungal infections and PAPs, emphasizing the importance of prompt recognition, aggressive treatment for favourable outcomes.

Nanoporous membranes offer significant advantages in direct contact membrane distillation applications due to their high flux and strong resistance to wetting. This study employs molecular dynamics simulations to explore the performance of membrane distillation in a single nanopore, mainly focusing on wetting behavior, liquid entry pressure, and membrane flux variations across different concentrations and types of salt solutions. The findings indicate that increasing the NaCl concentration enhances the wetting of membrane pores, thereby decreasing the entry pressure of the solution. However, at the same salt concentration, the differences in wetting and liquid entry pressure among various salts, including CaCl2, KCl, NaCl, and LiCl, are minimal. The presence of hydrated ions significantly reduces membrane flux. As the concentration of NaCl solutions increases, the number of hydrated ions rises, thereby lowering the membrane flux of the salt solution. Furthermore, the type of salt has a pronounced effect on the structure of hydrated ions. Solutions with Ca2+ and Li+ exhibit the smallest first-layer radius of hydrated ions. Under the same salt concentration, KCl solutions demonstrate the highest membrane distillation flux, while CaCl2 solutions show the lowest flux.

BACKGROUND: Migraine and insomnia are prevalent conditions that often co-occur, each exacerbating the other and substantially impacting the quality of life. The locus coeruleus (LC), a brainstem region responsible for norepinephrine synthesis, participates in pain modulation, sleep/wake cycles, and emotional regulation, rendering it a potential nexus in the comorbidity of migraine and insomnia. Disruptions in the LC-noradrenergic system have been hypothesized to contribute to the comorbidities of migraine and insomnia, although neuroimaging evidence in humans remains scarce. In this study, we aimed to investigate the intrinsic functional connectivity (FC) network of the LC in patients with comorbid migraine and subjective chronic insomnia and patients with migraine with no insomnia (MnI) using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and seed-based FC analyses. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 30 patients with comorbid migraine and chronic insomnia (MI), 30 patients with MnI, and 30 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. Participants underwent neuropsychological testing and rs-fMRI. The LC-FC network was constructed using seed-based voxel-wise FC analysis. To identify group differences in LC-FC networks, voxel-wise covariance analysis was conducted with sex and age as covariates. Subsequently, a partial correlation analysis was conducted to probe the clinical relevance of aberrant LC-FC in patients with MI and MnI. RESULTS: Except for the insomnia score, no other significant difference was detected in demographic characteristics and behavioral performance between the MI and MnI groups. Compared with HCs, patients with MI exhibited altered LC-FC in several brain regions, including the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC), anterior cerebellum, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), thalamus, and parahippocampal gyrus (PHG). Lower FC between the LC and DLPFC was associated with greater insomnia severity, whereas higher FC between the LC and DMPFC was linked to longer migraine attack duration in the MI group. CONCLUSION: Our findings reveal the presence of aberrant LC-FC networks in patients with MI, providing neuroimaging evidence of the interplay between these conditions. The identified LC-FC alterations may serve as potential targets for therapeutic interventions and highlight the importance of considering the LC-noradrenergic system in the management of MI.

BACKGROUND: Chronic insomnia disorder (CID) is commonly associated with mood disorders. The cingulate gyrus (CG) plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of CID and anxiety. However, the specific characteristics of altered brain networks in the CG in CID with anxiety remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of CG functional connectivity (FC) in CID with and without anxiety. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was conducted on 92 CID and 36 healthy controls (HC). CID was divided into CID with anxiety (CID-A, N = 37) and CID without anxiety (CID-NA, N = 55) groups based on anxiety scores. Using the Human Brainnetome Atlas, the subregion CG FC network was constructed. RESULTS: Compared with HC, CID showed significantly decreased CG FC with the precuneus, middle frontal gyrus (MFG), and hippocampus, while showing significantly increased CG FC with the middle temporal gyrus (MTG)/superior temporal gyrus (STG). In contrast, CID-A showed significantly decreased CG FC with the salience network (insular, putamen) and default mode network (MTG/STG and inferior parietal lobule), while showing significantly increased CG FC with the thalamus and MFG compared to CID-NA. Further, CID-A and CID-NA could be classified with 84.21 % accuracy by using the CG FCs as features. Among these features, the CG FC with MFG, thalamus, and putamen had the highest contribution weights. CONCLUSION: This study revealed specific changes in the brain network of the CG subregion in CID-A. Understanding these CG FC alterations can help identify potential biomarkers specific to CID-A, which may be valuable for early detection and differentiation from other CID subtypes.

Rationale: Reconstruction of hair follicles (HFs) and eccrine sweat glands (ESGs) is essential for functional skin regeneration. In skin reconstruction research, we found that foreskin-derived epidermal cells reconstructed HF organoids unidirectionally, but not ESG organoids. Methods: To investigate key genes and pathways influencing the fate of ESG and HF, a transcriptome profiling of ESG placode-containing skin and HF placode-containing skin was employed, and key DEGs were identified and validated by RT-qPCR and immunofluorescence staining in mice and rats. Subsequently, adult human epidermal cell-derived organoids were reconstructed to probe functional roles and mechanisms of FGF7 and FGF10 by series of approaches integrating RT-qPCR, immunofluorescence-staining, WB, apoptosis assay, and pathway interference assay. Results: All members of FGF7 subfamily were among the key DEGs screened, the differential expression of FGF7 and FGF10 and their receptors FGFR1/FGFR2 was verified between ESG placode-containing skin and HF placode-containing skin. In vivo and in vitro Matrigel plug models showed that both FGF7 and FGF10 promoted fate transition of human epidermal cell-derived organoids to ESG phenotype organoids, FGF7 and FGF10 had a synergistic effect, and mainly function through the FGFR1/2-MEK1/2-ERK1/2 pathway. Conclusions: Adult epidermal cells can be manipulated to reconstruct personalized HF and ESG to meet different needs.

Trauma is an important cause of death in young- and middle-aged people. Trauma is comprehensive and includes many surgical specialties, and the surgical techniques of these specialties have long been mature. To reduce the mortality and disability rate of trauma patients, it is necessary to improve trauma management. Trauma has attracted attention in China and trauma treatment and care developed rapidly in recent years. To decrease traumatic mortality and disability rates, our team is committed to building an efficient trauma system in Shaanxi province and has successfully developed a trauma limb salvage map to address the high rates of amputation and disability in patients with limb injuries. This article elaborates on the construction experience of a trauma limb salvage map and its application details in Shaanxi province of China.

Early screening for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is crucial in delaying cognitive deterioration and treating dementia. Conventional neuropsychological tests, commonly used for MCI detection, often lack ecological validity due to their simplistic and quiet testing environments. To address this gap, our study developed an immersive VR supermarket cognitive assessment program (IVRSCAP), simulating daily cognitive activities to enhance the ecological validity of MCI detection. This program involved elderly participants from Chengdu Second People's Hospital and various communities, comprising both MCI patients (N=301) and healthy elderly individuals (N=1027). They engaged in the VR supermarket cognitive test, generating complex datasets including User Behavior Data, Tested Cognitive Dimension Game Data, Trajectory Data, and Regional Data. To analyze this data, we introduced an adaptive ensemble learning method for imbalanced samples. Our study's primary contribution is demonstrating the superior performance of this algorithm in classifying MCI and healthy groups based on their performance in IVRSCAP. Comparative analysis confirmed its efficacy over traditional imbalanced sample processing methods and classic ensemble learning voting algorithms, significantly outperforming in metrics such as recall, F1-score, AUC, and G-mean. Our findings advocate the combined use of IVRSCAP and our algorithm as a technologically advanced, ecologically valid approach for enhancing early MCI detection strategies. This aligns with our broader aim of integrating realistic simulations with advanced computational techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficacy in cognitive health assessments.

Insomnia is the second most prevalent psychiatric disorder worldwide, but the understanding of the pathophysiology of insomnia remains fragmented. In this study, we calculated the connectome gradient in 50 chronic insomnia disorder (CID) patients and 38 healthy controls (HC) to assess changes due to insomnia and utilized these gradients in a connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) to predict clinical symptoms associated with insomnia. The results suggested that insomnia led to significant alterations in the functional gradients of some brain areas. Specifically, the gradient scores in the middle frontal gyrus, superior anterior cingulate gyrus, and right nucleus accumbens were significantly higher in the CID patients than in the HC group, whereas the scores in the middle occipital gyrus, right fusiform gyrus, and right postcentral gyrus were significantly lower than in the HC group. Further correlation analysis revealed that the right middle frontal gyrus is positively correlated with the self-rating anxiety scale (r=0.3702). Additionally, the prediction model built with functional gradients could well predict the sleep quality (r=0.5858), anxiety (r=0.6150), and depression (r=0.4022) levels of insomnia patients. This offers an objective depiction of the clinical diagnosis of insomnia, yielding a beneficial impact on the identification of effective biomarkers and the comprehension of insomnia.

In this study, the active food packaging film were prepared using hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan with different substitution sites (O-HACC & N-HACC) and dialdehyde chitosan (DCS) grafted with protocatechuic acid (PA). To explore the effect of chitosan quaternization positions and crosslinking approaches on the slow-release and antibacterial properties, the double-crosslinked film were fabricated through the self-coupling reaction of PA and Schiff base reaction between amino groups on HACC and aldehyde groups on DCS. The HACC/DCS-based film exhibited stable porous three-dimensional networks with high nisin loading ratios (>90 %). With the participation of the catechol-catechol structure, the dense double-crosslinked film effectively restricted the diffusion of the water molecules, resulting in excellent slow-release properties fitting with the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model. Especially, O-HACC/PA-g-DCS film, which had more reaction sites for Schiff base crosslinking than N-HACC, exhibited the equilibrium swelling ratio of 800 % at 60 h and could sustainably release nisin via non-Fickian diffusion behavior until 48 h. Moreover, the HACC/DCS-based double-crosslinked film performed good long-time antibacterial activity and preservation effects on salmon. On the 10th day of storage, the TVBN of N-HACC/PA-g-DCS and O-HACC/PA-g-DCS groups were only 28.26 ± 1.93 and 29.06 ± 1.68 mg/100 g and still lower than the thresholds.

Background: Many studies define obesity based on body mass index (BMI) and explore its relationship with adult asthma. However, BMI only considers height and weight, ignoring other factors such as body fat, which may have a greater impact on health. We investigated the relationship between body fat distribution and adult asthma using both a cross-sectional study and bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods: Weighted logistic regression models were used to examine the relationship between body fat distribution measurements and adult asthma in the cross-sectional study from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves were employed to explore the dose-response relationship between them. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the main method of MR analysis to explore the causal effect of exposure on outcome. Results: After adjusting for all covariates, weighted logistic regression analysis indicated that fat mass in the left arm, left leg, right arm, right leg, trunk, and total body is associated with an increased risk of developing adult asthma (p < 0.05). RCS curves showed that all six fat mass indicators exhibit a J-shaped relationship with adult asthma. Forward MR analysis found a causal effect of six fat mass indicators on the increased risk of adult asthma (p < 0.05). However, reverse MR did not reveal any causal effect of adult asthma on these six fat mass indicators (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Our study supports a positive correlation and a unidirectional causality between body fat distribution measurements and the risk of adult asthma. Further studies are needed to validate our findings.

There has been enduring debate on how attention alters contrast appearance. Recent research indicates that exogenous attention enhances contrast appearance for low-contrast stimuli but attenuates it for high-contrast stimuli. Similarly, one study has demonstrated that endogenous attention heightens perceived contrast for low-contrast stimuli, yet none have explored its impact on high-contrast stimuli. In this study, we investigated how endogenous attention alters contrast appearance, with a specific focus on high-contrast stimuli. In Experiment 1, we utilized the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) paradigm to direct endogenous attention, revealing that contrast appearance was enhanced for both low- and high-contrast stimuli. To eliminate potential influences from the confined attention field in the RSVP paradigm, Experiment 2 adopted the letter identification paradigm, deploying attention across a broader visual field. Results consistently indicated that endogenous attention increased perceived contrast for high-contrast stimuli. Experiment 3 employed equiluminant chromatic letters as stimuli in the letter identification task to eliminate potential interference from contrast adaption, which might have occurred in Experiment 2. Remarkably, the boosting effect of endogenous attention persisted. Combining the results from these experiments, we propose that endogenous attention consistently enhances contrast appearance, irrespective of stimulus contrast levels. This stands in contrast to the effects of exogenous attention, suggesting that mechanisms through which endogenous attention alters contrast appearance may differ from those of exogenous attention.

Benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) is a naturally active bacteriostatic substance and κ-carrageenan (KC) is a good film-forming substrate. In the present study, a nanoemulsion incorporating BITC was fabricated with a particle size of 224.1 nm and an encapsulation efficiency of 69.2 %. Subsequently, the acquired BITC nanoemulsion (BITC-NE) was incorporated into the KC-based film, and the light transmittance of the prepared composite films was lower than that of the pure KC film. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that BITC-NE was compatible with the KC matrix. BITC-NE incorporation enhanced the tensile strength of the KC-based films by 33.7 %, decreased the elongation at break by 33.8 %, decreased the water vapor permeability by 60.1 %, increased the maximum thermal degradation temperature by 48.8 %, and decreased the oxygen permeability by 42 % (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the composite films showed enhanced antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, and Pseudomonas fluorescens. The developed KC-based composite films were applied to wrap raw beef, which significantly delayed the increase in total viable count, total volatile base nitrogen content, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, and prolonged the shelf-life of the raw beef by up to 10 days. These results indicated that the composite films prepared by incorporating BITC nanoemulsions into KC matrices have great antimicrobial application potential.

Introduction: Affective decision-making is a prominent topic in consumer psychology research, with its core assumption being that consumers tend to purchase brands and commodities they like. However, the reasons behind why we develop emotional responses of liking or disliking toward certain commodities, as well as what the underlying neural mechanisms are, remain largely unknown. Methods: This study utilized the S1-S2 paradigm in an experiment wherein S1 presented 12 types of commodities and S2 displayed 48 distinct colored squares. Participants were instructed to assess whether they "Like" or "Dislike" the commodity in S1, which was colored with the S2 color. Electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings were obtained during the reaction process and subsequently analyzed to examine the components of S2-induced event-related potentials (ERPs). Results: The analysis revealed that S2 elicited a significant N270 in the prefrontal scalp area under both the "Like" and "Dislike" conditions. Interestingly, the amplitude of the N270 was significantly higher during the "Dislike" condition compared to the "Like" condition. Discussion: The N270 component was shown to reflect the conflict in physical attributes between S1 and S2, as well as the conflict between commodity and color. This highlights the potential utility of this component as an objective EEG indicator of consumer commodity color preferences in future marketing research.

Pectin (PEC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), plasticizers, and polyaminopropyl biguanide (Pb) (0.125%-1%) were used to prepare the film solution. The results demonstrated significantly enhanced tensile strength and elongation at break of PEC/PVA/Pb 0.25% film than PEC/PVA film. Scanning electron microscopy was carried out to investigate the continuous and dense structure of the PEC/PVA/ Pb0.25% film. FTIR, XPS, and XRD revealed that Pb addition to the PEC/PVA film matrix changed its physicochemical properties by forming new hydrogen and CN bonds. Moreover, the composite films exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against food-borne microorganisms (E. coli and S. aureus), and post-harvest pathogens (P. italicum and F. proliferatum) in vitro. The composite film effectively inhibited P. italicum growth during citrus experiments, while maintaining nutritional components (vitamin C, total flavonoid, and total polyphenol content). Overall, the antimicrobial composite film presented promising applicability in food packaging.

Sex and apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype have been shown to influence the risk and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the impact of these factors on the functional connectivity of the entorhinal cortex (ERC) in clinically unpaired older adults (CUOA) with amyloid-ß (Aß +) pathology remains unclear. A total of 1022 cognitively normal older adults with Aß + (603 females and 586 APOE ε4 +) from the Anti-Amyloid Treatment in Asymptomatic Alzheimer's (A4) study were included in this study. The 2 × 2 (gender, 2 APOE genotypes) analysis of covariance was performed to compare the demographic information, cognitive performance, and volumetric MRI data among these groups. Voxel-wise comparisons of bilateral ERC functional connectivity (FC) were conducted, and partial correlation analyses were used to explore the associations between cognitive performance and ERC-FC strength. We found that the APOE genotype influenced ERC functional connectivity mainly in the sensorimotor network (SMN). Males exhibited higher ERC-FC in the salience network (SN), while females displayed higher ERC-FC in the default mode network (DMN), executive control network (ECN), and reward network. The interplay of sex and APOE genotype on ERC-FC was observed in the SMN and cerebellar lobe. The ERC-FC was associated with executive function and memory performance in individuals with CUOA-Aß + . Our findings provide evidence of sex-specific ERC functional connectivity compensation mechanism in cognitively normal older adults with Aß + pathology. This study may contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the early stages of AD and may help develop personalized interventions in preclinical AD.

The precise and controllable preparation of carbon nanomaterials under mild conditions poses a great challenge, especially for metal-catalysed multiphase preparation. This work proposes an efficient method that utilizing high-density ultrasound to enhance the liquid-liquid interfacial reaction system. Iron-doped carbon dots (Fe-CDs) are successfully synthesized in such a normal temperature and atmospheric-pressure reaction condition. It is shown that transient cavitation provides a high-temperature and high-pressure microenvironment for the preparation of Fe-CDs. Moreover, the size of the reactant droplets is reduced from 200.0 ± 17.3 µm to 8.1 ± 2.9 µm owing to the acoustic flow and cavitation effects, which increases the specific surface area of the two reacting phases and improves the mass transfer coefficient by more than 252.0 %. As a result, the yield increases by more than an order of magnitude (from 0.7 ± 0.1 % to 11.9 ± 0.2 %) and the Fe doping rate reaches 20.9 %. The photocatalytic oxidation conversion of 1,4-Dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) using the obtained Fe-CDs is as high as 98.2 %. This research gives a new approach for the efficient and safe production of Fe-CDs, which is promising for industrial applications.

Microbial nitrogen fixation presents a viable alternative to chemical fertilizers, yet the limited colonization and specificity of naturally occurring nitrogen-fixing microorganisms present significant challenges to their widespread application. In this study, we identified a nitrogen fixation gene cluster (VNnif) in Vibrio natriegens (VN) and tested its nitrogenase activity through the acetylene reduction assay. We investigated the potential utilization of nitrogenase by incorporating the nitrogenase gene cluster from VN into plant growth-promoting rhizosphere bacteria Pseudomonas protegens CHA0 and enhancing its activity to 48.16 nmol C2H2/mg/h through promoter replacement and cluster rearrangement. The engineered strain CHA0-PVNnif was found to positively impact the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana col-0 and Triticum aestivum L. (wheat). This study expanded the role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and provided a research foundation for enhancing nitrogenase activity.
