RESUMEN

Conductive metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs) manifest great potential in modern electrical devices due to their porous nature and the ability to conduct charges in a regular network. cMOFs applied in electrical devices normally hybridize with other materials, especially a substrate. Therefore, the precise control of the interface between cMOF and a substrate is particularly crucial. However, the unexplored interface chemistry of cMOFs makes the controlled synthesis and advanced characterization of high-quality thin films, particularly challenging. Herein, we report the development of a simplified synthesis method to grow "face-on" and "edge-on" cMOF nanofilms on substrates, and the establishment of operando characterization methodology using atomic force microscopy and X-ray, thereby demonstrating the relationship between the soft structure of surface-mounted oriented networks and their characteristic conductive functions. As a result, crystallinity of cMOF nanofilms with a thickness down to a few nanometers is obtained, the possible growth mechanisms are proposed, and the interesting anisotropic softness-dependent conducting properties (over 2 orders of magnitude change) of the cMOF are also illustrated.

A one-stone, two-bird method to integrate the soft porosity and electrical properties of distinct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into a single material involves the design of conductive-on-insulating MOF (cMOF-on-iMOF) heterostructures that allow for direct electrical control. Herein, we report the synthesis of cMOF-on-iMOF heterostructures using a seeded layer-by-layer method, in which the sorptive iMOF core is combined with chemiresistive cMOF shells. The resulting cMOF-on-iMOF heterostructures exhibit enhanced selective sorption of CO2 compared to the pristine iMOF (298 K, 1 bar, S CO 2 / H 2 ${{_{{\rm CO}{_{2}}/{\rm H}{_{2}}}}}$ from 15.4 of ZIF-7 to 43.2-152.8). This enhancement is attributed to the porous interface formed by the hybridization of both frameworks at the molecular level. Furthermore, owing to the flexible structure of the iMOF core, the cMOF-on-iMOF heterostructures with semiconductive soft porous interfaces demonstrated high flexibility in sensing and electrical "shape memory" toward acetone and CO2 . This behavior was observed through the guest-induced structural changes of the iMOF core, as revealed by the operando synchrotron grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements.

This study seeks cost-effective strategies for PM2.5 reduction to generate insights into minimizing pollution abatement costs subject to different scenarios. This study theorizes that the cooperation of PM2.5 abatement has potential gains for participants and develop an empirical way to compare the costs and efficiency of PM2.5 abatement involving the variation of environmental conditions. This study revises the cooperative game model in the context of threshold effects using data obtained from the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei metropolitan cluster in China. In general, the results support the key assertion that cooperation in the metropolitan cluster plays a vital role in optimizing the efficiency and costs of PM2.5 abatement. In addition to extending the application of the revised model, this study provides a way to estimate the costs and the mitigation benefits of meeting the pollution targets for each coparticipant and take the scenario of multiparty cooperation into account as well as the scenarios involving other types of pollutants. The empirical findings have important policy implications for regional shared governance, decentralization, and resource reallocation. Economic incentive-based shared governance and cost reallocation work better than traditional regulations.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and osteoarthritis is controversial in epidemiological studies. With the aim of better understanding the effect of HRT use, this first meta-analysis was implemented to explore the association of HRT and knee OA. METHODS: A series of data is retrieved from Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase databases to observe the association of HRT and knee osteoarthritis up to December 2021. Two separated reviewers chose the research, extracted the data, and evaluated the study quality. Pooled estimates of 95% CI and HRs were acquired through a random-effects model. RESULTS: Finally, there existed 13 pieces of research, containing one case-control research, four cross-sectional pieces of research, as well as eight cohort pieces of research, involving 2573,164 participants. The overall results showed that the use of HRT was related to a raised risk of knee OA (HR = 1.24, 95% CI 1.07-1.45). And the pooled analysis showed a statistically significant raised risk of knee joint replacement (HR = 1.30, 95% CI 1.09-1.54) when using HRT. In addition, the outcome exhibits the raised knee OA risk for the present users of HRT (HR = 1.40, 95% CI 1.16-1.68) according to HRT status. In the past users of HRT, the augment of knee OA risk was not statistically evident (HR = 1.16, 95% CI 0.94-1.42). CONCLUSION: We observed that HRT use was related to a raised knee OA risk. Furthermore, future studies might focus on relevant mechanistic to verify our observed associations.

Two-dimensional (2D) π-conjugated conductive metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs, 2DπcMOF) with modulated channel sizes and a broad conductivity range have been reported in the last decade. In contrast, the corresponding comparative studies on their effects on chemiresistive sensing performances, which measure the resistive response toward external chemical stimuli, have not yet been reported. In this work, we sought to explore the structure-performance relationships of honeycomb-like 2D π-conjugated cMOF chemiresistive gas sensors with channel sizes less than 2 nm (the mass transport issue) and broad conductivity in the range from ∼10-8 S cm-1 to 1 S cm-1 (the charge transport issue). As a result, we found that the cMOF with a lower conductivity facilitates the much more sensitive response toward the charge transfer of the adsorbed gases (relative increases in resistance: R = 63.5% toward 100 ppm of NH3 for the as prepared Cu-THQ sensor with the conductivity of ∼10-8 S cm-1). Interestingly, the cMOF with a medium channel size (Cu-THHP-THQ) exhibited the fastest response speed in sensing, although it contains H2en2+ as neutralizing counterions in the channels. From the evaluation of the pore size distribution, it is found that the overall porosity (meso- & micro-pores) of cMOFs, rather than the pore size of the honeycomb structure, would determine their sensing speed. When comparing the performance of two different morphologies of nanorods (NRs) and nanosheets (NSs), NRs showed a slower response and extended recovery time, which can be ascribed to the slower gas diffusion in the more extended 1D channel. Altogether, our results demonstrate the first systematic studies on the effect of various structural parameters on the chemiresistive sensor performance of cMOFs.

AIM: To investigate the depressive state among the patients with symptomatic vitreous floaters (SVF), as well as its change after SVF removal via vitrectomy surgery. METHODS: Twenty-eight eyes of 28 patients who underwent 27-gauge pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for SVF were included. Thirty-nine eyes of 39 age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers without SVF were also recruited as a healthy control. Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) was used to assess volunteers and patients' depression (before and 1wk after PPV). RESULTS: The CES-D score was 18.3±8.6 for patients, and was 12.4±6.0 for healthy control (P=0.003). Patients were significantly more likely to be in a depressive state (53.6%, defined as CES-D score ≥16) than the healthy control (20.5%, P=0.005). For patients with SVF, the CES-D score was negatively correlated with their age (r s=-0.42, P=0.025). After PPV, both the CES-D score (11.9±5.4 vs 18.3±8.6, P<0.001) and proportion of depressive state (18.5% vs 53.6%, P=0.005) were significantly decreased. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that symptoms of vitreous floaters have an apparently negative impact on patients' psychological state. The PPV can effectively relieve the depressive state for patients with SVF.

Electrophoretic display encountered several challenges towards high frame rate applications, such as long response time and high driving voltage. In this study, liquid crystal additive doping can simultaneously increase the response speed by 2.8 times and reduce the driving voltage to half of the initial value of electrophoretic dispersion. The backflow effect of liquid crystal, which induces an inversely electrorheological effect and facilitates the reverse micelles' dielectrophoretic separation, was suggested to be the main reason for the performance improvement. The proposed method is facile and effective which shows promising potential for fast response and low power consumption e-paper applications.

BACKGROUND: Frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) has become a routine procedure in assisted reproductive technology (ART). In FET, although blastocysts cultured from thawed cleavage-stage embryos are associated with better perinatal outcomes. it may increase cycle cancellation due to no suitable embryo to transfer. The overall clinical outcomes following transfer of thawed cleavage-stage FET and blastocysts cultured from thawed cleavage-stage embryos in young and advanced age patients remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to identify the optimal FET strategy in young and advanced age women who undergo FET. METHODS: This retrospective study included 16,387 thaw cycles. We retrospectively analyzed data of couples who had completed the first FET cycle. Two FET strategies were studied: transfer of thawed cleavage-stage embryos (strategy A) or blastocysts cultured from thawed cleavage-stage embryos (strategy B). The clinical and neonatal outcomes of two FET strategies were compared in young (<35 years) and advanced (≥35 years) age women. RESULTS: In young women, the clinical outcomes per transfer cycle were better in strategy B than strategy A. While the clinical pregnancy (59.29%, 52.60%) and live birth rates (49.37%, 43.88%) per thaw cycle were significantly higher in strategy A than in B. In women of advanced age, the clinical outcomes per transfer cycle were still better in strategy B than in A, and the clinical pregnancy (36.44%, 39.66%) and live birth rates (25.70%, 30.00%) per thaw cycle were significantly higher in strategy B than in A. CONCLUSIONS: FET of blastocysts cultured from cleavage-stage embryos showed higher efficiency for per transfer cycle whether in younger or advanced age women. Whereas, when cycle cancellations due to no suitable embryo to transfer were considered, cleavage-stage FET was found to be more suitable for younger women, while FET of blastocysts cultured from cleavage-stage embryos was better suited for women of advanced age.

OBJECTIVE: To select normal fertilized diploid blastocysts in patients who had only monopronucleated (1PN) embryos for transfer. DESIGN: Experimental study. SETTING: University-affiliated center. PATIENT(S): Couples who were undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection treatment and had 1PN blastocysts. INTERVENTION(S): In a preliminary test, limited cells of parthenogenetic human embryonic stem cells (phESCs) and normal fertilized blastocysts were analyzed with the use of a low-density single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array to identify the distribution pattern and rate of heterozygosity. In the clinical application, 1PN blastocysts were analyzed with the use of the SNP array. Only diagnosed normal blastocysts were transferred. The diagnosed uniparental blastocysts were validated by imprinted gene expression. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Distribution pattern and rate of heterozygosity between parthenogenesis and normal fertilization. RESULT(S): In the pretest, phESCs exhibited distinct distribution pattern and lower rate of heterozygosity, compared with normal fertilized blastocysts after SNP analysis. In particular, homozygous hESCs showed a panhomozygosity distribution pattern, hybrid phESCs showed a partial homozygosity distribution pattern, and normal fertilized blastocysts exhibited a panheterozygosity distribution pattern with an average of 20.21% heterozygosity rate; 13.6% was found to be the minimum cutoff to predict normal fertilized samples. In the clinical application, 24 1PN blastocysts were analyzed; 10/24 showed chromosomal abnormalities, 3/24 showed panhomozygosity with 0.45%-0.8% heterozygosity, and 1/24 showed partial homozygosity with 6.54% heterozygosity. The remaining 10 blastocysts, with a panheterozygosity distribution pattern and higher genomic heterozygosity rate, were diagnosed as normal-fertilization diploid embryos; three were transferred and resulted in two healthy newborns. CONCLUSION(S): The low-density SNP array might serve as a cost-effective method to identify biparental origin and diploid 1PN blastocysts for transfer.

To evaluate the efficiency and safety of SperMagic medium on stimulating the immotile spermatozoa in testicular sperm extraction (TESE) and absolute asthenozoospermia, 96 patients with TESE and 106 patients with absolute asthenozoospermia were enrolled in this study. The motile spermatozoa were detected in 47 TESE patients and 68 absolute asthenozoospermia and these patients were assigned to control group. The immotile spermatozoa in 49 TESE patients and 34 absolute asthenozoospermia were stimulated with SperMagic medium. Patients were treated by standard intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). There were no significant differences in fertilisation, cleavage, implantation, pregnancy, live birth and neonatal outcomes. SperMagic medium does not increase incidence of adverse neonatal outcomes and is a reliable tool for selection of viable spermatozoa in ICSI.

BACKGROUND: The use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) has been reported to increase the incidence of monozygotic twinning (MZT) compared with the incidence following natural conception. It has been hypothesized that splitting of the inner cell mass (ICM) through a small zona hole may result in MZT. In this study, using a cohort of patients undergoing preimplantation genetic diagnosis/screening (PGD/PGS), we compared the clinical and neonatal outcomes of human 8-shaped blastocysts hatching with ICM incarceration with partially or fully hatched blastocysts, and attempted to verify whether this phenomenon increases the incidence of MZT pregnancy or negatively impact newborns. METHODS: This retrospective study included 2059 patients undergoing PGD/PGS between March 1, 2013, and December 31, 2015. Clinical and neonatal outcomes were only collected from patients who received a single blastocyst transfer after PGD/PGS (n = 992). A 25- to 30-µm hole was made in the zona of day 3 embryos by laser. The blastocysts were biopsied and vitrified on day 6. The biopsied trophectoderm (TE) cells were analyzed using different genetic methods. One tested blastocyst was thawed and transferred to each patient in the subsequent frozen embryo transfer cycle. All the biopsied blastocysts were divided into three types: 8-shaped with ICM incarceration (type I), partially hatched without ICM incarceration (type II), and fully hatched (type III). ICM/TE grading, clinical and neonatal outcomes were compared between the groups. RESULTS: The percentage of grade A ICMs in type I blastocysts (22.2%) was comparable to that in type III blastocysts (20.1%) but higher than that in type II blastocysts (4.5%). The percentage of grade A TEs in type I blastocysts (4.2%) was comparable to that in type II (3.6%) but lower than that in type III (13.5%). There were no significant differences in clinical pregnancy, MZT pregnancy, miscarriage, live birth, MZT births, and neonatal outcomes between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to partially and fully hatched blastocysts, 8-shaped blastocysts with ICM incarceration showed relatively higher ICM and lower TE grades. ICM incarceration in 8-shaped blastocysts does not increase the incidence of MZT and has no negative effects on newborns in PGD/PGS patients.

Chromosomal abnormalities are common in human embryos. Previous studies have suggested links between centrosome number and chromosome abnormalities, but information regarding abnormalities in centrosome number in human embryos is limited. We analyzed abnormalities in centrosome number in human embryos and embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Following normal fertilization, supernumerary centrosomes were present at rates of 7.3% in two-pronucleus (2PN)-stage zygotes and 6.5% in first-cleavage zygotes. Supernumerary centrosomes were also detected in 24.4% of blastomeres from 60% of embryos derived from 2PN zygotes. Conversely, in mono- (1PN) and tri-pronucleus (3PN) zygotes, the frequency of abnormal centrosome number increased substantially at first cleavage. Rates in blastomeres of Day-3 embryos, however, were about the same between embryos derived from 1PN and 2PN zygotes, whereas abnormalities in centrosome number were higher in those from 3PN zygotes. By comparison, the rate of abnormal centrosome numbers in hESCs was 1.5-11.2%. Thus, abnormalities in centrosome number existed in human zygotes and cleaved embryos-especially those resulting from aberrant fertilization-but the frequency of such abnormalities was lower in hESCs derived from these embryos. These findings identify a source of the chromosomal instability in human embryos and hESCs, and highlight new safety issues for human assisted reproductive technology. Mol. Reprod. This paper presents an intuitive yet effective in-situ thermal diffusivity testing structure and testing method. The structure consists of two doubly clamped beams with the same width and thickness but different lengths. When the electric current is applied through two terminals of one beam, the beam serves as thermal resistor and the resistance R(t) varies as temperature rises. A delicate thermodynamic model considering thermal convection, thermal radiation, and film-to-substrate heat conduction was established for the testing structure. The presented in-situ thermal diffusivity testing structure can be fabricated by various commonly used micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) fabrication methods, i.e., it requires no extra customized processes yet provides electrical input and output interfaces for in-situ testing. Meanwhile, the testing environment and equipment had no stringent restriction, measurements were carried out at normal temperatures and pressures, and the results are relatively accurate.

The cell division cycle associated 8 (CDCA8) gene plays an important role in mitosis. Overexpression of CDCA8 was reported in some human cancers and is required for cancer growth and progression. We found CDCA8 expression was also high in human ES cells (hESCs) but dropped significantly upon hESC differentiation. However, the regulation of CDCA8 expression has not yet been studied. Here, we characterized the CDCA8 promoter and identified its cis-elements and transcription factors. Three transcription start sites were identified. Reporter gene assays revealed that the CDCA8 promoter was activated in hESCs and cancer cell lines. The promoter drove the reporter expression specifically to pluripotent cells during early mouse embryo development and to tumor tissues in tumor-bearing mice. These results indicate that CDCA8 is transcriptionally activated in hESCs and cancer cells. Mechanistically, two key activation elements, bound by transcription factor NF-Y and CREB1, respectively, were identified in the CDCA8 basic promoter by mutation analyses and electrophoretic motility shift assays. NF-Y binding is positively correlated with promoter activities in different cell types. Interestingly, the NF-YA subunit, binding to the promoter, is primarily a short isoform in hESCs and a long isoform in cancer cells, indicating a different activation mechanism of the CDCA8 transcription between hESCs and cancer cells. Finally, enhanced CDCA8 promoter activities by NF-Y overexpression and reduced CDCA8 transcription by NF-Y knockdown further verified that NF-Y is a positive regulator of CDCA8 transcription. Our study unearths the molecular mechanisms underlying the activation of CDCA8 expression in hESCs and cancer cells, which provides a better understanding of its biological functions.

The cryopreservation of human embryos is thought to induce alteration in the glycoprotein matrix and lead to zona change. However, this assumption has been full of controversies till now. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cryopreservation on zona pellucida of human embryos. Fresh (n=106, from 40 patients) and frozen-thawed embryos (n=123, from 40 patients) were obtained from consenting patients who received conventional IVF and ICSI treatment. The birefringence of zona pellucida in human fresh and frozen-thawed embryos was imaged and quantitatively analyzed using polarized light microscopy before embryo transfer. There was no significant difference in retardance and thickness of the zona pellucida multilaminar structure between the two groups. Pregnancy and implantation rates of transferred fresh and frozen-thawed embryos were also compared. No significant difference was found in the rates of clinical pregnancy (47.5 vs 37.5%) and implantation (24.5 vs 23.2%) between the two groups. This study suggests that there is no significant change in the zona pellucida birefringence of human embryos before and after cryopreservation.

Tripronuclear zygotes (3PN) occur in about 5% of cases in human IVF programmes. Human 3PN zygotes derived from a conventional IVF programme may contain not only the extra male pronucleus but also a supplementary centriole. Researchers have tried to restore diploidy by removing the extra male pronucleus of the tripronuclear zygote. However, it is still unknown whether the procedure can remove the supernumerary centriole. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety of this manipulation by analysing the first mitotic spindles of 3PN zygotes that have undergone extra pronuclear removal. A controlled trial was conducted using human 3PN zygotes from conventional IVF treatment. In the experimental group, the assumed extra male pronuclei in the 3PN zygotes were removed. The first cleavage patterns and in vitro development were observed in both groups; polarized light microscopy and immunocytochemistry were used to analyse the first mitotic spindles. The blastocyst formation rate was significantly higher (P = 0.007) in the pronuclear-removed group (16.0%) than in the control group (4.5%). No significant differences were found between the groups in the first cleavage patterns and the distributions of the first mitotic spindle structure. This study suggests that, after extra pronuclei are removed, the developmental potential of human 3PN zygotes is improved. However, the abnormal patterns in the first mitosis are not corrected by this removal.
