RESUMEN

[reaction: see text] The in situ generation of a copper-poly(pyrazolyl)borate complex from copper chloride and a sodium poly(pyrazolyl)borate salt results in a catalyst that is effective for the aziridination of olefins. A significant influence of the combination of the starting copper oxidation state and the hapticity of the poly(pyrazolyl)borate ligand on the efficiency of the reaction has been observed.

RESUMEN

[figure: see text] The Stille coupling reaction has been performed in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIM BF4), a room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL). Use of this solvent system allows for facile recycling of the solvent and catalyst system, which can be used at least five times with little loss in activity. An interesting preference in starting catalyst oxidation state for use with aryl bromides and aryl iodides was observed.

RESUMEN

Accurate data are not available for the prevalence of eating disorders amongst the Asian population in Britain. Only a handful of cases have been reported in the literature [Bhadrinath (1990). British Journal of Psychiatry, 156, 565-568.] suggested that it is an uncommon phenomenon despite Dolan's recent finding [Dolan, Lacey, & Evans (1990). British Journal of Psychiatry, 157, 523-528.] that there were elevated Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) scores in a sample of young Asian adults compared with Caucasians. We report a case of an Asian girl with a rare inborn error of metabolism and an eating disorder.

RESUMEN

The mean annual rates of hospital admission for deliberate self-poisoning were calculated for Caucasian and Asian 12-15-year-olds between 1982 and 1990 as 2.31 and 2.47 per 1000 respectively. There was an excess of girls in each group.

RESUMEN

A study of self-poisoning in 25 Asian and 25 Caucasian adolescents is presented. Cultural conflicts were the most important factors in the parasuicidal behaviour of Asian children, whereas a variety of factors accounted for the parasuicidal behaviour of Caucasians with a predominance of a disrupted family background. There was little difference in the type of poisoning and the degree of pre-planning between the two groups.

RESUMEN

We report the colonic pathology of two surgical excisions and two autopsies from patients acutely infected by E. coli O157:H7. The right colon was most severely affected. Extreme edema, fibrin deposition, and hemorrhage in the submucosa was the most distinctive finding. All cases showed patchy mucosal ulceration, mucosal hemorrhage, neutrophil infiltration, and microvascular thrombi. Pseudomembranous lesions similar to those described in pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile were a minor feature. Advanced lesions displayed regenerative mucosal changes and heavy plasmacytic infiltration of submucosa. The colonic pathology may be due to bacterial verocytotoxin rather than to bacterial attachment-effacement or invasion.
