BACKGROUND: With the rapid progress of systematic therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), therapeutic strategies combining hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) with systematic therapy arised increasing concentrations. However, there have been no systematic review comparing HAIC and its combination strategies in the first-line treatment for advanced HCC. AIM: To investigate the efficacy and safety of HAIC and its combination therapies for advanced HCC. METHODS: A network meta-analysis was performed by including 9 randomized controlled trails and 35 cohort studies to carry out our study. The outcomes of interest comprised overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), tumor response and adverse events. Hazard ratios (HR) and odds ratios (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated and agents were ranked based on their ranking probability. RESULTS: HAIC outperformed Sorafenib (HR = 0.55, 95%CI: 0.42-0.72; HR = 0.51, 95%CI: 0.33-0.78; OR = 2.86, 95%CI: 1.37-5.98; OR = 5.45, 95%CI: 3.57-8.30; OR = 7.15, 95%CI: 4.06-12.58; OR = 2.89, 95%CI: 1.99-4.19; OR = 0.48, 95%CI: 0.25-0.92, respectively) and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) (HR = 0.50, 95%CI: 0.33-0.75; HR = 0.62, 95%CI: 0.39-0.98; OR = 3.08, 95%CI: 1.36-6.98; OR = 2.07, 95%CI: 1.54-2.80; OR = 3.16, 95%CI: 1.71-5.85; OR = 2.67, 95%CI: 1.59-4.50; OR = 0.16, 95%CI: 0.05-0.54, respectively) in terms of efficacy and safety. HAIC + lenvatinib + ablation, HAIC + ablation, HAIC + anti- programmed cell death 1 (PD-1), and HAIC + radiotherapy had the higher likelihood of providing better OS and PFS outcomes compared to HAIC alone. HAIC + TACE + S-1, HAIC + lenvatinib, HAIC + PD-1, HAIC + TACE, and HAIC + sorafenib had the higher likelihood of providing better partial response and objective response rate outcomes compared to HAIC. HAIC + PD-1, HAIC + TACE + S-1 and HAIC + TACE had the higher likelihood of providing better complete response and disease control rate outcomes compared to HAIC alone. CONCLUSION: HAIC proved more effective and safer than sorafenib and TACE. Furthermore, combined with other interventions, HAIC showed improved efficacy over HAIC monotherapy according to the treatment ranking analysis.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a complication of diabetes mellitus characterized by heart failure and cardiac remodeling. Previous studies show that tetrahydroberberrubine (THBru) retrogrades cardiac aging by promoting PHB2-mediated mitochondrial autophagy and prevents peritoneal adhesion by suppressing inflammation. In this study we investigated whether THBru exerted protective effect against DCM in db/db mice and potential mechanisms. Eight-week-old male db/db mice were administered THBru (25, 50 mg·kg-1·d-1, i.g.) for 12 weeks. Cardiac function was assessed using echocardiography. We showed that THBru administration significantly improved both cardiac systolic and diastolic function, as well as attenuated cardiac remodeling in db/db mice. In primary neonatal mouse cardiomyocytes (NMCMs), THBru (20, 40 µM) dose-dependently ameliorated high glucose (HG)-induced cell damage, hypertrophy, inflammatory cytokines release, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Using Autodock, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and DARTS analyses, we revealed that THBru bound to the domain of the receptor for advanced glycosylation end products (RAGE), subsequently leading to inactivation of the PI3K/AKT/NF-κB pathway. Importantly, overexpression of RAGE in NMCMs reversed HG-induced inactivation of the PI3K/AKT/NF-κB pathway and subsequently counteracted the beneficial effects mediated by THBru. We conclude that THBru acts as an inhibitor of RAGE, leading to inactivation of the PI3K/AKT/NF-κB pathway. This action effectively alleviates the inflammatory responses and oxidative stress in cardiomyocytes, ultimately leading to ameliorated DCM.

We conducted a systematic review of the literature to assess the potential prognostic utility of geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) for head and neck cancer (HNC). We selected studies and extracted data after searching the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and PubMed databases. The associations between GNRI and survival outcomes were explored by calculating hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) through a random-effects meta-analysis. We included 11 studies that involved 2887 patients with HNC. The combined HR demonstrated significant associations of low GNRI with unfavorable progression-free survival (HR = 1.87, 95% CI = 1.32-2.65, p < 0.001) and overall survival (HR = 3.04, 95% CI = 2.30-4.03, p < 0.001). The association between the GNRI and overall survival persisted across various subgroups. The GNRI could serve as a valuable prognostic biomarker for patients with HNC. Low GNRI scores are significantly associated with unfavorable survival outcomes.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have recently been demonstrated to be promising renewable harvesters because of their prominent photovoltaic power conversion efficiency (PCE), although their stability and efficiency still have not reached commercial criteria. Trouble-oriented analyses showcase that defect reduction among the grain boundaries and interfaces in the prepared perovskite polycrystalline films is a practical strategy, which has prompted researchers to develop functional molecules for interface passivation. Herein, the pyridine-based bifunctional molecule dimethylpyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate (DPDC) was employed as the interface between the electron-transport layer and perovskite layer, which achieved a champion PCE of 21.37% for an inverted MAPbI3-based PSC, which was greater than 18.64% for the control device. The mechanistic studies indicated that the significantly improved performance was mainly attributed to the remarkably enhanced fill factor with a value greater than 83%, which was primarily due to the nonradiative recombination suppression offered by the passivation effect of DPDC. Moreover, the promoted carrier mobility together with the enlarged crystal size contributed to a higher short-circuit current density. In addition, an increase in the open-circuit voltage was also observed in the DPDC-treated PSC, which benefited from the improved work function for reducing the energy loss during carrier transport. Furthermore, the DPDC-treated PSC showed substantially enhanced stability, with an over 80% retention rate of its initial PCE value over 300 h even at a 60% relative humidity level, which was attributed to the hydrophobic nature of the DPDC molecule and effective defect passivation. This work is expected not only to serve as an effective strategy for using a pyridine-based bifunctional molecule to passivate perovskite interfaces to enhance photovoltaic performance but also to shed light on the interface passivation mechanism.

Objectives: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disease that is one of the most common in childhood neuromuscular disorders. Our screenings are more meaningful programs in preventing birth defects, providing a significant resource for healthcare professionals, genetic counselors, and policymakers involved in designing strategies to prevent and manage SMA. Method: We screened 39,647 participants from 2020 to the present by quantitative real-time PCR, including 7,231 pre-pregnancy participants and 32,416 pregnancy participants, to detect the presence of SMN1 gene EX7 and EX8 deletion in the DNA samples provided by the subjects. To validate the accuracy of our findings, we also utilized the Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification (MLPA) to confirm the reliability of screening results obtained by quantitative real-time PCR. Result: Among the 39,647 participants who were screened, 726 participants were the carriers of SMN1. The overall carrier rate was calculated to be 1.83% (95% confidence interval: 0.86-2.8%). After undergoing screening, a total of 592 pregnancy carriers were provided with genetic counseling and only 503 of their spouses (84.97, 95% confidence interval: 82.09-87.85%) voluntarily underwent SMA screening. Conclusion: This study provides crucial insights into the prevalence and distribution of SMA carriers among the female population. The identification of 726 asymptomatic carriers highlights the necessity of comprehensive screening programs to identify at-risk individuals and ensure appropriate interventions are in place to minimize the impact of SMA-related conditions.

Introduction: Elective surgeries were postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic to alleviate healthcare strains, affecting majority of elective orthopaedic surgeries such as total knee arthroplasties (TKAs). The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact on knee function and quality of life of patients who had their planned TKA postponed due to the pandemic. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of data collected in a tertiary hospital. Patients included were diagnosed with primary knee osteoarthritis and they were initially scheduled for primary TKA between January to April 2020 but surgery was postponed by at least 6 months from the initial operative date. 160 patients were included in this study (53 males and 107 females, mean age 68.0 ± 8.1). Patients were assessed prior to initial surgery date and assessed again, prior to the postponed surgery date. Clinical scores included Knee Society Function Score (KSFS), Knee Society Knee Score (KSKS), Oxford Knee scores (OKS) and Short-Form 36 Physical and Mental Component Scores. (SF36 PCS and MCS). Paired T-test was performed for parametric data whereas Wilcoxon signed-rank analysis was performed for non-parametric data. Results: Comparing initial preoperative versus postponement preoperative scores, the cohort had significantly poorer KSKS (38.4 ± 15.4 and 36.5 ± 15.4, p = 0.034), SF36 PCS (34.3 ± 9.2 and 32.7 ± 8.6, p = 0.02) and OKS (34.9 ± 0.77 and 35.8 ± 8.6, p = 0.02) scores respectively. Conclusion: The postponement of elective TKAs has resulted in a significant deterioration of knee scores and physical quality of live scores of patients in a short span of 6 months. Further studies can evaluate if there are repercussions on long term TKAs outcomes. Level of evidence: Retrospective study, Level III.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of high mortality and disability worldwide. Overactivation of astrocytes and overexpression of inflammatory responses in the injured brain are characteristic pathological features of TBI. Rosiglitazone (ROS) is a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) agonist known for its anti-inflammatory activity. However, the relationship between the inflammatory response involved in ROS treatment and astrocyte A1 polarization remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether ROS treatment improves dysfunction and astrocyte A1 polarization induced after TBI and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of these functions. METHODS: SD rats were randomly divided into sham operation group, TBI group, TBI+ROS group, and TBI+ PPAR-γ antagonist group (GW9662 + TBI). The rat TBI injury model was prepared by the CCI method; brain water content test and wire grip test scores suggested the prognosis; FJB staining showed the changes of ROS on the morphology and number of neurons in the peripheral area of cortical injury; ELISA, immunofluorescence staining, and western blotting analysis revealed the effects of ROS on inflammatory response and astrocyte activation with the degree of A1 polarization after TBI. RESULTS: Brain water content, inflammatory factor expression, and astrocyte activation in the TBI group were higher than those in the sham-operated group (P < 0.05); compared with the TBI group, the expression of the above indexes in the ROS group was significantly lower (P < 0.05). Compared with the TBI group, PPAR-γ content was significantly higher and C3 content was considerably lower in the ROS group (P < 0.05); compared with the TBI group, PPAR-γ content was significantly lower and C3 content was substantially higher in the inhibitor group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: ROS can exert neuroprotective effects by inhibiting astrocyte A1 polarization through the PPAR-γ pathway based on the reduction of inflammatory factors and astrocyte activation in the brain after TBI.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the disease spectrum and pathogenic genes of inherited metabolic disorder (IMD) among neonates in Gansu Province of China. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the tandem mass spectrometry data of 286 682 neonates who received IMD screening in Gansu Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital from January 2018 to December 2021. A genetic analysis was conducted on the neonates with positive results in tandem mass spectrometry during primary screening and reexamination. RESULTS: A total of 23 types of IMD caused by 28 pathogenic genes were found in the 286 682 neonates, and the overall prevalence rate of IMD was 0.63 (1/1 593), among which phenylketonuria showed the highest prevalence rate of 0.32 (1/3 083), followed by methylmalonic acidemia (0.11, 1/8 959) and tetrahydrobiopterin deficiency (0.06, 1/15 927). In this study, 166 variants were identified in the 28 pathogenic genes, with 13 novel variants found in 9 genes. According to American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics guidelines, 5 novel variants were classified as pathogenic variants, 7 were classified as likely pathogenic variants, and 1 was classified as the variant of uncertain significance. CONCLUSIONS: This study enriches the database of pathogenic gene variants for IMD and provides basic data for establishing an accurate screening and diagnosis system for IMD in this region.

RESUMEN

This report presents the case of an 11-year-old girl with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), anti-MDA5 antibodies and multiple skin ulcers. Treatment with traditional immunomodulators and tofacitinib resulted in healing of the skin ulcers and normalization of muscle enzyme markers. This case highlights the significance of recognizing the association between anti-MDA5 antibodies and cutaneous ulceration in JDM and supports the use of Janus kinase inhibitors as a management option.

Fullerenes are among the most commonly used electron-transporting materials (ETMs) in inverted perovskite solar cells (IPSCs). Although versatile functionalized fullerene derivatives have shown excellent performance in IPSCs, pristine [60]fullerene (C60) is still the most widely used in devices mainly because of its uniform morphology by thermal deposition. However, thermally evaporable fullerene derivatives have not yet been achieved. Herein, we developed a series of evaporable fullerene derivatives, referred to as fullerene indanones (FIDOs), affording IPSCs with high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long-term storage stability. The FIDOs were designed with a unique architecture in which the fullerene moiety and a benzene ring moiety are linked via a five-membered carbon ring in benzene ring plane. This molecular arrangement affords exceptional thermal stability, allowing the FIDOs to withstand harsh thermal deposition conditions. Moreover, by manipulating the steric bulk of the functional groups, we could control the state of the organic film from crystalline to amorphous. Subsequently, we used FIDOs as an electron transport layer (ETL) in IPSCs. Thanks to the suitable energy level and dual-passivation effect of FIDOs compared with a reference ETL using C60, the device using FIDOs achieved an open-circuit voltage of 1.16 V and a fill factor of 0.77. As a result, the PCE reached 22.11%, which is superior to 20.45% of the best-performing reference device. Most importantly, the FIDO-based IPSC devices exhibited exceptional stability in comparison to the reference device due to the stability of the amorphous ETL films.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer remains a common gynecological tumor and the fifth leading cause of death worldwide. Taxol-based chemotherapy is a standard approach to the treatment of ovarian cancer. Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) is the key regulator of ferroptosis, which is an important form of cell death. Here, we investigate the effect of GPX4 inhibition-mediated ferroptosis on the sensitivity of ovarian cancer cells to Taxol. METHODS AND RESULTS: A2780/PTX and OVCAR-3/PTX Taxol-resistant ovarian cancer cells were established, and stable GPX4 knockout cell lines were generated via lentivirus GPX4-sgRNA. The GPX4 expression level, the apoptosis rate and cell viability were analyzed. The levels of ferroptosis-related factor indicators such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were measured. The results showed that the GPX4 protein and mRNA levels were increased in the Taxol-resistant cells. Moreover, GPX4 knockout reduced cell viability and inhibited the colony formation rate. In addition, we found that GPX4 inhibition increased Taxol sensitivity by inducing ferroptosis. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, our studies reveal that GPX4 inhibition promotes ferroptosis and increases the sensitivity of ovarian cancer cells to Taxol in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence played an important role in tumor localization and margin delineation in hepatobiliary surgery. However, the preoperative regimen of ICG administration was still controversial. Factors associated with tumor fluorescence staining effect were unclear. AIM: To investigate the preoperative laboratory indexes corelated with ICG fluorescence staining effect and establish a novel laboratory scoring system to screen specifical patients who need ICG dose adjustment. METHODS: To investigate the predictive indicators of ICG fluorescence characteristics in patients undergoing laparoscopic hepatectomy from January 2018 to January 2021 were included. Blood laboratory tests were completed within 1 wk before surgery. All patients received 5 mg ICG injection 24 h before surgery for preliminary tumor imaging. ImageJ software was used to measure the fluorescence intensity values of regions of interest. Correlation analysis was used to identify risk factors. A laboratory risk model was established to identify individuals at high risk for high liver background fluorescence. RESULTS: There were 110 patients who were enrolled in this study from January 2019 to January 2021. The mean values of fluorescence intensity of liver background (FI-LB), fluorescence intensity of gallbladder, and fluorescence intensity of target area were 18.87 ± 17.06, 54.84 ± 33.29, and 68.56 ± 36.11, respectively. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed that FI-LB was a good indicator for liver clearance ability [area under the ROC curve (AUC) = 0.984]. Correlation analysis found pre-operative aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, adenosine deaminase, and lactate dehydrogenase were positively associated with FI-LB and red blood cell, cholinesterase, and were negatively associated with FI-LB. Total laboratory risk score (TLRS) was calculated according to ROC curve (AUC = 0.848, sensitivity = 0.773, specificity = 0.885). When TLRS was greater than 6.5, the liver clearance ability of ICG was considered as poor. CONCLUSION: Preoperative laboratory blood indicators can predict hepatic ICG clearance ability. Surgeons can adjust the dose and timing of ICG preoperatively to achieve better liver fluorescent staining.

The paper summarizes the definition, location and main indication of qicimai points recorded in Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor 's Inner Classic). It is found that qicimai points are the "upward moving points" in reference to the meridian distribution rule of "rooting, running, infusing and moving"; and corresponding to the sites of "running outwards and inwards" of the meridians' "separating, meeting and running outwards and inwards". It also includes the infusing points for the sea of qi and marrow. The new idea, "selecting qicimai points for the treatment of qi obstruction in the neck gate", is proposed. Based on the systematic application of the acupoints on the nape region, it is anticipated that a new approach will be provided to the treatment of the diseases in the neck, shoulder, head, face, the five sensory organs, mental disorders and zangfu qi dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Conventional total knee arthroplasty (C-TKA) implants have well-established mid- and long-term outcomes. The novel TKA (N-TKA) implants provide morphogenic implant components with smaller size increments to facilitate anatomical replication. The aim of the study is to evaluate if these advantages provides better clinical outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Registry data prospectively collected within a single institution from 2014 to 2018 was reviewed and propensity score matching was performed to match C-TKA to N-TKA. 70 pairs of cruciate retaining (CR) TKA and 116 pairs of posterior stabilized (PS) TKA were identified. Range of motion, SF-36, Knee Society Knee Score (KSKS), Knee Society Function Score (KSFS) and Oxford Knee Score (OKS) were assessed preoperatively, 6 and 24 months postoperatively. Satisfaction was assessed 6 and 24 months postoperatively. Independent T test was performed for parametric data, whereas Wilcoxon rank-sum analysis was performed for non-parametric data. RESULTS: Both C-TKA and N-TKA cohorts demonstrated statistically significant improvement for KSKS, KSFS, OKS and SF-36 at 6 and 24 months postoperatively. C-TKA CR patients had better flexion at 6 months as compared to N-TKA CR (108.7° versus 98.3°, respectively, p = 0.046). At 24 months, there was no difference between C-TKA and N-TKA for range of motion, KSKS, KSFS, OKS and SF-36 PCS, regardless of insert type (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both models showed great postoperative improvements in KSFS, KSKS, OKS and SF-36 and have comparable early and mid-term outcomes, suggesting that N-TKAs are suitable substitutes for C-TKA. Importance: A core component of delivering care of head and neck diseases is an adequate workforce. The World Health Organization report, Multi-Country Assessment of National Capacity to Provide Hearing Care, captured primary workforce estimates from 68 member states in 2012, noting that response rates were a limitation and that updated more comprehensive data are needed. Objective: To establish comprehensive workforce metrics for global otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) with updated data from more countries/territories. Design, Setting, and Participants: A cross-sectional electronic survey characterizing the OHNS workforce was disseminated from February 10 to June 22, 2022, to professional society leaders, medical licensing boards, public health officials, and practicing OHNS clinicians. Main Outcome: The OHNS workforce per capita, stratified by income and region. Results: Responses were collected from 121 of 195 countries/territories (62%). Survey responses specifically reported on OHNS workforce from 114 countries/territories representing 84% of the world's population. The global OHNS clinician density was 2.19 (range, 0-61.7) OHNS clinicians per 100 000 population. The OHNS clinician density varied by World Bank income group with higher-income countries associated with a higher density of clinicians. Regionally, Europe had the highest clinician density (5.70 clinicians per 100 000 population) whereas Africa (0.18 clinicians per 100 000 population) and Southeast Asia (1.12 clinicians per 100 000 population) had the lowest. The OHNS clinicians deliver most of the surgical management of ear diseases and hearing care, rhinologic and sinus diseases, laryngeal disorders, and upper aerodigestive mucosal cancer globally. Conclusion and Relevance: This cross-sectional survey study provides a comprehensive assessment of the global OHNS workforce. These results can guide focused investment in training and policy development to address disparities in the availability of OHNS clinicians.

Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can be more severe than adult patients. Early diagnosis and accurate evaluation of the disease are very important for the patients. Response gene to complement-32 (RGC-32) protein is the downstream regulator of C5b-9 complex which is the terminal pathway of complement activation. Complement system plays a very important role in the pathogenesis of SLE. RGC-32 in patients with SLE has not been reported yet. We aimed to examine the clinical value of RGC-32 in children with SLE. A total of 40 children with SLE and another 40 healthy children were enrolled for this study. Clinical data were obtained prospectively. Serum RGC-32 was determined by ELISA. We found that serum RGC-32 was significantly elevated in children with SLE than that in the healthy group. Serum RGC-32 was significantly higher in the children with moderately/severely active SLE than that in the children with no/mildly active SLE. Furthermore, serum RGC-32 level correlated positively with C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and ferritin and correlated negatively with white blood cell counts and C3. RGC-32 may be involved in the pathogenesis of SLE. RGC-32 might become a good biomarker in the diagnosis and evaluation of SLE.

Objective To explore the effects and mechanisms of a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescription, "Fang-gan Decoction" (FGD), in protecting against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-induced lung and intestinal injuries in vitro and in vivo.Methods Female BALB/c mice and three cell lines pretreated with FGD were stimulated with recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (spike protein). Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and pathologic scoring of tissues, cell permeability and viability, and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression in the lung and colon were detected. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed to detect the levels of inflammatory factors in serum and cell supernatant. The expression of NF-κB p65, p-NF-κB p65, p-IκBα, p-Smad2/3, TGF-ß1, Caspase3, and Bcl-2 was evaluated by Western blotting.Results FGD protected against the damage to the lung and colon caused by the spike protein in vivo and in vitro according to the pathologic score and cell permeability and viability (P<0.05). FGD up-regulated ACE2 expression, which was reduced by the spike protein in the lung and colon, significantly improved the deregulation of inflammatory markers caused by the spike protein, and regulated the activity of TGF-ß/Smads and NF-κB signaling.Conclusion Traditional Chinese medicine has a protective effect on lung and intestinal tissue injury stimulated by the spike protein through possible regulatory functions of the NF-κB and TGF-ß1/Smad pathways with tissue type specificity.

BACKGROUND: This study presents a single surgeon's experience comparing 1-year outcomes of endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (E-TLIF) vs minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) in an Asian population. METHODS: Retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent single-level E-TLIF or MIS-TLIF by a single surgeon in a tertiary spine institution from 2018 to 2021 with 1-year follow-up. Inclusion criteria for both procedures were degenerative disc disease with grade I or II spondylolisthesis and mild to moderate central canal stenosis. Clinical outcomes assessed included surgery duration, blood loss, and length of stay. Patient-reported outcomes assessed included the visual analog score for back pain and lower limb pain, Oswestry Disability Index, and North American Spine Society Neurogenic Symptom Score. Radiographic parameters assessed included segmental lordosis, posterior disc height, listhesis, and the presence of cage migration or subsidence. RESULTS: Twelve E-TLIF and 34 MIS-TLIF patients were identified. E-TLIF had shorter surgery duration (165 ± 15 vs 259 ± 43 min for E-TLIF and MIS-TLIF groups, respectively; P < 0.001), reduced blood loss (83 ± 75 vs 181 ± 225 mL; P = 0.033), and decreased length of stay (1.8 ± 0.9 vs 4.7 ± 2.9 days; P < 0.001) compared with MIS-TLIF. E-TLIF and MIS-TLIF patients had significant improvements (P < 0.05) at 1 year in all patient-reported outcomes scores and radiographic parameters assessed. Both E-TLIF and MIS-TLIF patient groups also had similar postoperative patient-reported outcomes scores and radiographic parameters. No complications were recorded for E-TLIF, while MIS-TLIF had a case of dura tear and another case of meralgia paresthetica. There were no instances of cage subsidence, cage migration, or implant loosening in either group at 1 year. CONCLUSIONS: Although the study size was limited because E-TLIF is a relatively new technique in our institution, 1-year results demonstrate that E-TLIF can be a safe and efficacious option that achieves clinical and radiological results similar to MIS-TLIF with the additional benefits of decreased surgical duration, blood loss, and length of hospital stay. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The results of this study support the effectiveness and potential advantages of endoscopic TLIF compared with MIS-TLIF.
