RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 4 (ITIH4) regulates immunity and inflammation, but its clinical role in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients remains unclear. Hence, this study was conducted to explore the association of circulating ITIH4 with disease risk, clinical features, inflammatory cytokines, and treatment outcomes of RA. METHODS: After the enrollment of 93 active RA patients and 50 health controls (HCs), their serum ITIH4 level was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). For RA patients only, serum ITIH4 level at week (W) 6 and W12 after treatment was also analyzed. Besides, serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, and IL-17A at baseline of RA patients were also detected by ELISA. RESULTS: ITIH4 was downregulated in RA patients (151.1 (interquartile range (IQR): 106.2-213.5) ng/mL) than in HCs (306.8 (IQR: 238.9-435.1) ng/mL) (p < 0.001). Furthermore, ITIH4 was negatively related to C-reactive protein (CRP) (rs  = -0.358, p < 0.001) and 28-joint disease activity score using erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS28-ESR) (rs  = -0.253, p = 0.014) in RA patients, but not correlated with other clinical features (all p > 0.05). Besides, ITIH4 was negatively linked with TNF-α (rs  = -0.337, p = 0.001), IL-6 (rs  = -0.221, p = 0.033), and IL-17A (rs  = -0.368, p < 0.001) in RA patients, but not correlated with IL-1ß (rs  = -0.195, p = 0.061). Moreover, ITIH4 was gradually elevated in RA patients from baseline to W12 after treatment (p < 0.001). Additionally, the increment of ITIH4 at W6 and W12 was linked with treatment response and remission in RA patients (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Circulating ITIH4 possesses clinical utility in monitoring disease risk, inflammation, disease activity, and treatment outcomes of RA.

RESUMEN

Nitrogen (N) deposition and fertilization, which represent key sources of N input in many terrestrial ecosystems, influence all levels of the ecosystem and involve complex mechanisms. Quantitative and modelling approaches can be used to understand this complexity. In this study, we carried out in situ N addition experiments in a Stipa krylovii steppe in northern China. We evaluated the effects of N addition on plant diversity and productivity under two scenarios (fertilization and simulated increased N deposition) using a structural equation model (SEM). N addition had direct effects on community weighted means (CWM) of plant functional traits and soil properties but had indirect effects on community structure. The changes in community structure and soil properties caused by N addition decreased plant diversity, whereas productivity remained relatively stable and was mainly controlled by changes in community structure. The changes in soil properties and plant diversity caused by N addition had little effect on productivity or soil pH. We conclude that the changes in plant diversity and productivity with increased N input in the S. krylovii steppe were mainly due to differences in growth responses of different species to increased N and the resulting community responses, such as changes in community structure. The results of the present study provide a theoretical basis for grassland management and conservation in the wake of global environmental change.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to explore the mediating role of emotional regulation strategies in the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and subjective well-being (SWB) among Chinese university teachers, and evaluate whether effort-reward imbalance moderated the mediating effect of emotional regulation strategies. A total of 308 Chinese university teachers were recruited for this study. The results showed that emotional regulation strategies played a partial mediating role in the relationship between EI and SWB. Moreover, an effort-reward imbalance moderated the relationship between emotional regulation strategies and SWB. For individuals with more balanced perceptions, EI had a significant effect on SWB via cognitive reappraisal, while for individuals with more imbalanced perceptions, EI did not have a significant effect on SWB via cognitive reappraisal. These findings provide a better understanding of the effects of EI and emotional regulation strategies on SWB, which could provide interventions for promoting SWB among teachers.

RESUMEN

Although the spontaneous vapor-solid growth of SiC nanowires is a well-established phenomenon, the exact mechanism by which nanowires grow on substrates is still poorly understood. Here, we studied the initial growth of SiC nanowires on carbon sources with different nanotextures via a catalyst-free vapor reaction between a polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fiber and a silicon powder. The results revealed that the SiC nanowires were preferentially formed on the carbon fiber with a higher degree of graphitization. Detailed analyses suggested that the growth behavior of the underlying SiC film formed on the carbon fibers, which is strongly affected by the microstructures of the carbon fibers, plays an important role in the formation of nanowires. In addition, the photoluminescence spectrum of SiC nanowires showed strong ultraviolet-visible emission peaks at an excitation wavelength of 250 nm, which may provide potential applications in the field of optoelectronic devices.

RESUMEN

Interannual climate variation alters functional diversity through intraspecific trait variability and species turnover. We examined these diversity elements in three types of grasslands in northern China, including two temperate steppes and an alpine meadow. We evaluated the differences in community-weighted means (CWM) of plant traits and functional dispersion (FDis) between 2 years with contrasting aridity in the growing season. Four traits were measured: specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC), and the maximum plant height (H). CWM for SLA of the alpine meadow increased in the dry year while that of the temperate steppe in Qinghai showed opposing trends. CWM of LDMC in two temperate steppes became higher and CWM of LNC in all grasslands became lower in the dry year. Compared with the wet year, FDis of LDMC in the alpine meadow and FDis of LNC in the temperate steppe in Qinghai decreased in the dry year. FDis of H was higher in the dry year for two temperate steppes. Only in the temperate steppe in Qinghai did the multi-FDis of all traits experience a significant increase in the dry year. Most of the changes in CWM and FDis between 2 years were explained by intraspecific trait variation rather than shifts in species composition. This study highlights that temporal intraspecific trait variation contributes to functional responses to environmental changes. Our results also suggest it would be necessary to consider habitat types when modeling ecosystem responses to climate changes, as different grasslands showed different response patterns.

RESUMEN

Understanding the response of the plant community to increasing nitrogen (N) deposition is helpful for improving pasture management in semi-arid areas. We implemented a 5-year N addition experiment in a Stipa krylovii steppe of Inner Mongolia, northern China. The aboveground biomass (AGB) and species richness were measured annually. Along with the N addition levels, the species richness declined significantly, and the species composition changed noticeably. However, the total AGB did not exhibit a noticeable increase. We found that compensatory effects of the AGB occurred not only between the grasses and the forbs but also among Gramineae species. The plant responses to N addition, from the community to species level, lessened in dry years compared to wet or normal years. The N addition intensified the reduction of community productivity in dry years. Our study indicated that the compensatory effects of the AGB among the species sustained the stability of grassland productivity. However, biodiversity loss resulting from increasing N deposition might lead the semi-arid grassland ecosystem to be unsustainable, especially in dry years.

RESUMEN

The instability of anode materials during cycling has been greatly limiting the lifetime of aqueous rechargeable lithium batteries (ARLBs). Here, to tackle this issue, mesoporous LiTi2(PO4)3@C composites with a pore size of 4 nm and a large BET surface area of 165 m(2) g(-1) have been synthesized by a novel two-step approach. The ARLB with this type of LiTi2(PO4)3@C anode, commercial LiMn2O4 cathode and 2 M Li2(SO4) aqueous solution (oxygen was removed) exhibited superior cycling stability (a capacity retention of 88.9% after 1200 cycles at 150 mA g(-1) and 82.7% over 5500 cycles at 750 mA g(-1)) and excellent rate capability (discharge capacities of 121, 110, 90, and 80 mAh g(-1) based on the mass of LiTi2(PO4)3 at 30, 150, 1500, and 3000 mA g(-1), respectively). As verified, the mesoporous structure, large surface area and high-quality carbon coating layer of the LiTi2(PO4)3@C composite contribute to the breakthrough in achieving excellent electrochemical properties for ARLB.

RESUMEN

Poor cycling performance arising from the instability of anode is still a main challenge for aqueous rechargeable lithium batteries (ARLB). In the present work, a high performance LiTi2(PO4)3/C composite has been achieved by a novel and facile preparation method associated with an in-situ carbon coating approach. The LiTi2(PO4)3/C nanoparticles show high purity and the carbon layer is very uniform. When used as an anode material, the ARLB of LiTi2(PO4)3/C//LiMn2O4 delivered superior cycling stability with a capacity retention of 90% after 300 cycles at 30 mA g(-1) and 84% at 150 mA g(-1) over 1300 cycles. It also demonstrated excellent rate capability with reversible discharge capacities of 115 and 89 mAh g(-1) (based on the mass of anode) at 15 and 1500 mA g(-1), respectively. The superior electrochemical properties should be mainly ascribed to the high performance of LiTi2(PO4)3/C anode, benefiting from its nanostructure, high-quality carbon coating, appropriate crystal structure and excellent electrode surface stability as verified by Raman spectra, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements.
